Chioma Afe, the Bank’s chief spokesperson stated that with a deposit balance of only N5,000 (five thousand naira) a customer is qualified to participate in the draw and multiples of that amount increases the customers chances of winning.

According to her, the Season 9 extraordinary edition has been very rewarding to the customers, noting that the draws scheduled for the this season reaffirms the Bank’s commitment to financially empower more Nigerians by spreading the draws across the six geopolitical zones.

The DiamodnXtra initiative was launched in July 2008 and has produced 5,600 winners with a cumulative cash reward of over N4 billion.

According to Afe, a customer stands a better chance of winning if he or she saves more as every N5,000.00 in the account of a customer represents one entry ticket into the draws.

She said: “Every DiamondXtra account customer has equal opportunity of winning in the daily transparent electronic draws. We would like to reassure all our loyal customers that Diamond Bank will constantly seek robust platforms like this not just to enrich them but to let them know that we care for their future economic wellbeing”.

Bonucci Aiming For UCL With Milan

Featured Image

Leonardo Bonucci has stated that he joined AC Milan to better his time at Juventus by winning the champions league.

The Italian defender joined Milan alongside Hakan Calhanoglu , Ricardo Rodriguez and Andre Silva, as the serie a club went into a buying frenzy.

Bonucci says the lofty dreams held at Milan is the reason he joined the club and he would like to forget the two UCL finals he lost at Juventus.

“I chose Milan because they had the most ambitious project,” he told La Gazzetta dello Sport. “I live with challenges.

“And [directors Marco] Fassone and [Massimo] Mirabelli made me feel very important and they really wanted me, otherwise the negotiation would not last for only 48 hours.

“They are either done immediately or never done – and it is certainly not a question of money. To those who call me a mercenary I say that I also had interest from abroad, where I would have earned more.

“I have chosen Milan because, in my head, there is the idea of repeating the course I had at Juventus, where we had started rebuilding, as in this case, and we came to the top.

“Here, I want to get even higher. Within four years, I hope to win the Champions League. I want to win all the titles.”

Clarke: Costa Could Be Out In The Cold For Two Years

Featured Image

Former Chelsea manager Steve Clarke says Chelsea can afford to keep Costa on the books for two years and not use him.

The Spain international was expected to be on his way out of the club in the summer, but a move to Atletico is impossible, due to a transfer ban.

Costa has refused to come back and train with the club and will rather stay in Brazil and Clarke warns he could spend the next two years there.

He told talkSPORT: “At the moment Costa is making it difficult for himself. He hasn’t gone back to the club, he’s not training, he’s not earning his money.

“I think Chelsea have got the financial power to make him see out the rest of his contract.

“If Costa doesn’t want to come back in and honour his deal, then Chelsea have got the financial power to say, ‘ok, you’ll sit for two years and not play’.

“But that’s not an ideal situation for anybody.

“I think they need to get all the parties together, sit them down and thrash out some kind of a solution that’s best for everybody – even if it’s a short-term one.

“I think they need somebody at the top, probably right at the top – it’s probably a job for Mr Abramovich to be honest.”

2,424 ‘Illegal’ Schools Shut Down In Benue State

Featured Image

No less than 2,424 schools operating without government’s approval have been shut down by the Benue State Government on Tuesday, August 15, 2017.

This is coming barely a week after the government of Rivers state took similar decision on illegal schools operating in the state.

The State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Professor Dennis Ityavyar, who announced the closure to newsmen, said the decision was reached after a stakeholders’ meeting today.

He said that the affected schools failed to meet the necessary requirements which include good environment, play-ground and good classrooms.

Ityavyar further gave the breakdown of schools to include: 1,977 primary, 433 secondary schools and 14 tertiary institutions cut across the three senatorial districts of the state.

He said that the proliferations of schools in the state are responsible for poor performances of students in both external and internal examinations.

According to him, production of half-baked graduates resulted to the establishment of so many miracle centers in the state.

He also revealed that Benue state ranked 14 out of 36 states in the 2017 West African Examination Council.

He said, “The decision to embark on the closure of illegal schools across the 23 local governments of the state is a deliberate step towards improving the standards of quality education in the state.”

The commissioner warned the authority of the schools to adhere to the closure order until all the criteria are met, adding that whoever floats the order will face prosecution.

Nigeria: First-Class Degrees From Third-Class Universities!

Nigeria: First-Class Degrees From Third-Class Universities! By Eugene Enahoro

CLICK here to read more opinion articles

Nowadays Nigerian Universities are renowned for their outdated syllabus, inadequate funding, epileptic power supply, poorly motivated staff and substandard facilities. This is reflected in the 2017 Times Higher Education World Ranking of University facilities, in which no Nigerian University is ranked in the top 500, and only one in the top 1,000! The best Nigerian University was ranked just 601st. This is 200 places lower than Makerere University Uganda, and 401 places lower than the University of Cape Town South Africa.

This piece was written by Eugene Enahoro. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

The best private university in Nigeria ranked a lowly 1,110th. Even in the African continent the best Nigerian University ranked only 44th. The most reliable and respected independent global ranking for purely academic activities in universities is Webometrics. They recently released their 2017 ranking of academic standards where they placed the best Nigerian university 1,433rd and the top private university in Nigeria 2,114th! In their 2017 ranking of Nigerian Universities the National Universities Commission (NUC) placed just one private university in the top ten, and only three in the top thirty.

This poor international and local rating of Nigerian private universities is particularly worrisome in light of the NUC’s recent announcement that they are processing applications for 200 new ones! From just two in 1999 the nation now has over 70, none of which has attained any noteworthy ranking. Rather than considering this to be a wakeup call, those in charge seemingly prefer quantity over quality. The United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) prescribed that 26% of a nation’s budget should be invested in education. No Nigerian government has ever met this standard.

As a result, totally predictable population increases have caused the number of qualified school leavers to far exceed the available university places. The rationale behind the rapid expansion of private universities is the need to overcome problems of access to university education caused by government’s failure to plan for, and invest in, increased capacity. The irony is that in spite of all the ills associated with federal government universities, private universities have not managed to outstrip them in anything other than fees charged! Nigerian private universities suffer from low enrolment, staffing difficulties, precarious finances, and governance issues with interfering proprietors. The majority of them are owned by political and religious leaders whose predilection for dictatorial tendencies and prospering at the expense of the underprivileged is legendary. Instead of ensuring that they can meet the prerequisite benchmark minimum academic standards (BMAS) before approval, the NUC’s misguided policy is to facilitate establishment of substandard private universities and then work to develop BMAS afterwards.

The end result is a situation in which the mere construction of buildings qualifies for a private university. It comes as no surprise that academic standards in some of them are being called into question. Recently a private university awarded over 100 first-class degrees at a blow! In days gone by, the few universities which existed in Nigeria were acclaimed worldwide for both their facilities and the quality of their graduates. Back then first-class degrees were a rarity. Nowadays perhaps as a reflection of fallen standards first-class degrees are becoming commonplace. There is little doubt that securing a first-class degree from a private university is far easier than from a government one.

This has led to allegations that they are being sold. Cynics claim that the first-class fees charged in our private universities warrant the first-class degrees awarded! The real question is whether or not these first-class degrees are better than second-class degrees from world-ranked universities? The answer is an unequivocal no! This is why our political leaders and all those who can afford it (even university lecturers!) send their children to university overseas where they will most likely graduate with a second-class degree.

In Nigeria, an estimated 1.5 million qualified applicants apply annually for university admission into the approximately 400,000 available places in government universities. Despite this capacity shortfall, enrolment in private universities is less than 30,000. This is a direct result of their exorbitant fees. The existing under-enrolled private universities traditionally receive less than 3% of total applications which is well below their NUC approved carrying capacity. This gap between student enrolment and carrying capacity in private universities can only be expected to grow if more of them are licensed.

Although the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) isn’t supposed to be their recruiting agency, private universities desperate for students are unprofessionally and maybe even criminally conniving with them. Thousands of school-leavers who didn’t apply to any private university received unsolicited admission letters when without authorization their JAMB information was given out. In 2015 there were riots when JAMB unilaterally assigned applicants to private universities which they hadn’t applied to, and whose fees they couldn’t afford. In the current mess, it’s evident that what is required is not more sub-standard private universities, but rather an increase in government investment in tertiary education.

The way forward is to increase in the carrying capacity of existing universities, and redesign and upgrade technical and vocational colleges. If the standard of university education in Nigeria is to regain worldwide recognition, then the NUC must call a halt to the proliferation of third-class ranked institutions competing to award first-class degrees.

This piece was written by Eugene Enahoro. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

Malignaggi: Let Us Fight McGregor

Featured Image

Paulie Malignaggi says he wants to fight Conor McGregor, to settle the dispute between them, after a well documented sparring row.

Malignaggi says he is ready to fight the irishman next year, as long as he does not suffer a one sided defeat against Mayweather.

Paulie quit the UFC superstar’s training camp, after pictures of him hitting the canvas surfaced online.

“It’s picked up a ton of momentum, the bad blood is there so let’s fight,” he said during an in-depth interview on The MMA Hour.

“We’ll need to see how he looks against Mayweather. If he looks dog s***, no one will want to see us fight.

“As long as he doesn’t get the living s*** beaten out of him, I think the demand is there to make the fight.”

“I showed up with the best intentions in camp, but at a certain point you realise that you are being used as a pawn where somebody is trying to get ahead at your expense and not through your help,” said Malignaggi.

He added: “I had no choice but to leave.

“If I never see him or speak to him for the rest of my life, it’s cool.”

Roach: McGregor Is Fun To Watch

Featured Image

Freddie Roach says he is backing Conor McGregor, but believes the irishman can only last four rounds.

The boxing trainer said the mixed martial arts professional is exciting to watch ahead of his fight against Mayweather.

Roach says McGregor is more exciting to watch than his opponent, as they prepare for their Las Vegas fight.

“He’s [McGregor] fun to watch,” Roach told boxing.com.

“He’s a character. [But] he’s not that good of a fighter. He’ll let his hands go and so forth. He’s a little wild.

“He’s putting himself on a very high level. I think he’s more of a four-round fighter at this point.”

“He’s not a risk-taker anymore,” he said of Mayweather.

“He’s not the most exciting guy in the world. But, he’s still a great boxer. [McGregor] can’t beat guys like that, in my opinion.”

Henry: Arsenal Must Switch Style For Lacazette To Shine

Featured Image

Former Arsenal striker, Thierry Henry has said Arsenal must ditch their current style to bring the best out if Lacazette.

Arsenal acquired Lacazette from Lyon for a fee of £46 million, with Sanchez future surrounded by uncertainty.

Henry believes the midfielders must adapt their game to suit the France international, switching to direct football.

The club’s all-time leading goalscorer told Sky Sports: “Granit Xhaka has it in his locker to play that ball over the top.

“He has an amazing left foot. If he has time on the ball he does not need to play through the middle sometimes.

“Why do you want to play what I call ‘the Arsenal ball’ to the winger who comes in the pocket? Why don’t you play the other ball?
“That’s the best ball in the game because you go straight to goal. They don’t like it.

“Does he lose the ball? No, he doesn’t lose the ball. Does it look pretty? Yes, it looks pretty. But we want to go to goal.

“That’s where we want to go. Can he play that pass? It is not difficult for Xhaka. They are going to have to learn with Lacazette.”

He added on the 26-year-old: “Because he is so sound and good on the ball, he can play on the left or on the right, but for me he is a No.9.

“When the big man comes back and hopefully he is going to come back soon, Alexis Sanchez, he is going to play on the left.

“I think Lacazette is going to play in the centre. That is where I would like to see him play. [Olivier] Giroud can offer a lot and he showed that [against Leicester] but I would love to see the partnership that Sanchez and Lacazette can create.”

Mkhitaryan: Lindelof Will Shine For United

Featured Image

Henrikh Mkhitaryan has backed Lindelof to perform for Manchester United, believing he will impress Mourinho.

Lindelof joined United from Benfica for £30 million in the off-season, but was left out of the squad that played the opener.

Mourinho has cited the reason for dropping the defender, saying he needs time to adapt to the Premier League.

“Lindelof is still going to have time to show himself,” Mkhitaryan said. “So I want to say all the players are good signings and they are going to help us a lot.

“As a player and for a club, you are always going to have ups and downs. I think the last few years was a little bit down for the club but since last year, and this year, I hope it is going be up for the club.

“We are going to try to do our best to bring the club on the level it was at before. It is always hard but we will try and do our best.”

Davinson Sanchez has informed Ajax he wants to join Tottenham, reports the Independent.

The Colombia international is understood have rejected a move to Barcelona last year due to fears of a lack of game time.

But with Mauricio Pochettino believe to be interested in the 21-year-old, the defender has now revealed his desire to leave the Eredivisie club.

Sanchez’s importance was evident as last season’s Europa League finalists lost against their Eredivisie rivals for the first time in 52 years.

Despite Ajax having sold their top talent throughout their illustrious history, it is understood they are holding out for upwards of £45million.

And that would make him the club’s highest-ever sale — and record purchase for Spurs.

Sanchez, 21, is one of a number of top, young talents at the Amsterdam Arena, and would find Jan Vertonghen, Toby Alderweireld and Christian Eriksen as former Ajax players in North London.

He joined from Atletico Nacional last summer, and his performances have seen Barcelona among the clubs interested in signing him.

Joey Barton Predicts Rafa Benitez Will Quit Newcastle Before Christmas

Featured Image

Former Newcastle United midfielder Joey Barton has predicted that Rafa Benitez will leave his job as manager before Christmas.

The Spaniard has admitted that he is unhappy with the club’s transfer activity this summer having seen the arrivals of five new players.

After the Magpies’ earned promotion to the Premier League from the Championship last season, owner Mike Ashley claimed that Benitez would have funds to recruit the players that he wants.

In a recent interview with Sky Sports News, the Sports Direct businessman revealed that he cannot compete financially with some of England’s elite, including Manchester City.

Barton, who played for Newcastle between 2007 and 2011, believes that it is only a matter of time before Benitez walks away over disputes with the hierarchy.

“Newcastle is a great club, but the owner causes a lot of problems. It’s his way or the highway. I can’t see Benitez staying there until Christmas,” the midfielder told talkSPORT.

“Ashley’s interview on TV was silly because it draws everybody in and makes it a soap opera because Rafa has to responded and has to take a side.

“I believe Benitez wants to go. His body language says Ashley has not come through with what he wanted this summer, and that means he feels he won’t have the opportunity to establish Newcastle in the top half of the Premier League.

“It ends one of two ways – either the owner leaves and gets the money he wants for the club, or the manager will go because he won’t give him the finances he feels is necessary to compete in the Premier League.”

Tottenham £25m Bid For Fulham’s 17-year-old Wonderkid Ryan Sessegnon Rejected

Featured Image

Tottenham have had a bid worth up to £25m rejected for Fulham youngster Ryan Sessegnon, according to the Daily Telegraph.

The 17-year-old, England U19 international has emerged as on the country’s football’s most-promising talents having worked his way through the ranks at Craven Cottage.

Spurs’ fee would go close to matching the £25.5m Manchester United paid to sign 18-year-old Wayne Rooney in 2004, still the highest fee paid for an English teenager.

The Telegraph, however, claim Sessegnon is happy at Fulham and will put no pressure on the club to sell.

Spurs are also understood to be interest in Ryan’s twin brother, Steven.

Philippe Coutinho Leaving Liverpool Would Be Awful -Roberto Firmino

Featured Image

Roberto Firmino has reportedly admitted that it would be “awful” to see Philippe Coutinho leave the club.

Philippe Coutinho is believed to have submitted a transfer request via email after learning of Barcelona‘s interest.

The Catalan giants, who recently sold Neymar for a fee thought to be around £196m, have reportedly had a £72m bid for Coutinho and an offer in the region of £80m rejected by the Reds.

The 25-year-old missed Saturday’s Premier League opening 3-3 draw with Watford due to a back injury, and he has not travelled with the squad for tonight’s Champions League first leg qualifier against Hoffenheim.

Twitter account @BrazilStat has quoted Firmino as saying: “I prefer to not think of [Coutinho leaving] because it’d be awful. He’s a great player but also a great friend to me.”

$90bn Loot: Ex-Minister Diezani Finally Breaks Silence, “I Didn’t Steal Nigeria’s Money”

Featured Image

Former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Allison Madueke has finally broken her long silence on the several allegations of financial impropriety levelled against her by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

In a statement issued on Monday, the embattled former minister said she never stole Nigeria’s money, adding that the anti-graft agency was taking advantage of her silence to try and convict her in the media hence her response.

Court Orders Permanent Forfeiture Of Diezani’s $37.5m Banana Island Mansion To FG

EFCC Traces N47.2bn, $487.5m In Cash, Properties To Former Oil Minister Diezani

Recall that the EFCC had alleged that Diezani, a former minister of Petroleum Resources, by an order of a Federal High Court has forfeited $153.3 million to the Federal Government.

However, she said “I wish to state I cannot forfeit what was never mine.

She wrote: “I am deeply disturbed and bewildered by recent media reports claiming that by virtue of an order of the federal high court, I have forfeited to the federal government the sum of $153.3m, which I purportedly stole from the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).

“Whilst the reasons for my being out of the country are public knowledge, the principle of fair hearing demands that I should have been notified of formal charges if truly there was a prima facie evidence or indictment against my person linking me with the said issue, so as to ensure that I had adequate legal representation.

“This was never done. I wish to state that I cannot forfeit what was never mine. I do not know the basis on which the EFCC has chosen to say that I am the owner of these funds as no evidence was provided to me before the order was obtained and they have not in fact served me with the order or, any evidence since they obtained it. As of the time of my writing this rebuttal, the EFCC has still not furnished me or my lawyers with a copy of the order.

“I am also informed by my lawyers that the legislation under which the EFCC obtained this order is for situations where the funds are believed to be the proceeds of crime and the owner is not known. I do not therefore; understand how the EFCC can in the same breath say that the monies in question are mine.

“If they had evidence that the monies were mine then they would not/should not have used the procedure which applies only to funds of unknown ownership. If indeed they used this particular legal procedure because they did not know who owned the monies, then how can they now be falsely attributing the ownership to me?”

On the Malabu oil deal, Diezani said at the time she was a minister, the matter was not under the direct purview of the petroleum ministry but was centred around the law.

She continued: “As minister of petroleum Resources, I did not participate in any activity relating to financial payments on the Malabu matter, other than those statutorily mandated to the minister of petroleum resources by the petroleum act,” she said.

“My role in this matter was a purely statutory one as required by law in the petroleum act 3.”

While dismissing claims that the EFCC found $700 million in her home in Abuja, she said:

“Would the videos of this $700 million cash discovery not have made good viewing? Or should those who recovered this money not tell the public where exactly the money has been kept.”

“Perhaps the central bank should corroborate that it is in custody of these monies allegedly found in my house? But then, it is now patently apparent that Nigerians are no longer easily led to believe fables and sensational untruths.”

The former minister claimed that although she cut the subsidy bill of the country by almost 50 percent and put her life under immediate threat, she was still accused of taking bribes.

“At end December 2011, I directed PPPRA to move for complete deregulation, to rid the oil and gas sector of the speculators, the bloated middlemen and the parasitic influence of God-fatherism,” Diezani said.

“This was in an attempt to create a far less corruptible system as it was quite clear that the intended benefits of the Subsidy system were not reaching the masses but were being hijacked by unscrupulous middlemen cabals.”
