Dembele: I Do Not Feel Pressure Of Price Tag

Featured Image

Barcelona new boy, Ousmane Dembele says his price tag of €105 million, does not put him under any pressure to perform.

The France international winger was brought in from Dortmund for a fee that could rise to €145 million, dwarfing the fee paid for Suarez.

Dembele completed his medical on Monday , and was presented at the Camp Nou, after he signed a five-year contract.

“I’m not under pressure,” he told a media conference. “The transfer market is a little crazy, but I’m here to do my job well on the pitch and I’m not thinking about this sort of thing.”

“I’m excited to play with the best. My goal is to learn from the best, from Messi, from Suarez, and to win as many trophies as possible,” he said.

“It’s an honour, a pleasure to be able to play on a team with Messi. I want to see what he’s doing, he’s the best in the world, the best in history.

“It’s not extra pressure [to replace Neymar]. Of course, he is an excellent player but I’m young, I’m coming from my second season as a professional and I’m trying to grow.

“Barca needed a player in this position and they called me. But I come here to learn.”

Guytalk Podcast: These 5 Casual/Innocent Habits Can Get You Fired From Your Job

Featured Image

This episode of Guytalk Podcast is focusing on the habits and characters that gets many young people fired from their job.

Many fired employees are quick to blame employers for getting them fired. In as much as many people tend to see the termination coming, others receive a rude awakening to reality when they get fired for something seemingly small.

The hosts of the Guytalk Podcast were able to analyze the behaviors that ultimately lead to loss of jobs by many young people and as much as we will like to blame employers for being insensitive and inconsiderate, truth is, many times we are responsible.

Below are some of the innocent habits that can get one fired from their jobs:

1. Flirting:

Flirting is basically something which naturally happens in an organization with male and female workers.
Sometimes, however, this comes off the wrong way to certain people (especially women) and can lead to a sexual assault accusation.

Heavy flirting also rubs off the wrong way to third parties as a person comes off as unprofessional and unserious. Sometimes the HR takes note and uses it as an excuse to let one go from their job.

Know who you flirt with.

2. Gossiping and snide comments:

The allure of juicy gossip is undeniably hard to resist. However, this sometimes can lead to feelings getting hurt and people seeking opportunity to get one kicked out of an organization.

Gossiping about a colleague especially at work, increases the chances of spreading wrong information about them. This can lead to defamation claims and can get you kicked out of the company if an investigation is done and you are pinpointed as the source of the rumor.

Snide comments also leads to termination if it repeatedly comes from you and people have laid complaints about it to the HR. This will translate to inability to work with a team and can get you kicked out of a company you love working with.

3. Spending time on social media:

This is a distraction. Distractions cost time. Time is money. Employers want to believe they have all your time during work hours and if you are one who is noticeably always chatting or Skyping at work, they will attribute any lapse in your duties to this.

The attention span of every person is short and spending time on social media makes it hard to concentrate and focus totally at work. Except you work in an organization where it makes your work better being on social media, try to spend less time on your phone during working hours.

JAMB Defends Low Cut-Off Marks

Featured Image

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has defended its decision to reduce the cut-off marks for 2017 admission exercise into tertiary institutions nationwide.

After its policy meeting, where several stakeholders in the education sector attended, the apex exam body agreed on 120 as minimum cut-off marks for admission into university, 100 for polytechnics and 110 for innovative enterprise institutions.

JAMB Releases 2017/2018 Cut-Off Marks For Universities, Polytechnics, Colleges Of Education

The decision, which was greeted with disapproval, also had the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) threatening that it will call for the scrapping of the exam body if it fails to reverse the low cut-off marks for admission into tertiary institutions.

However, the board said Nigerians should be concerned about how to address the flight of citizens in glorified secondary schools called foreign Universities in places like country Ghana, Uganda, Gambia and others.

“It is expedient to state here that the worst admitted cut-off mark in a Nigerian institution is far better than allowing them to fly out to some of the institution they are attending out there which we all know are nothing to be proud of”, JAMB said.

In a statement issued on Sunday by JAMB spokesman, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, the board said despite the criticisms, the organisation would not lose focus.

It however added that despite the reduction of the cut-off points from 180 for Universities and 165 Polytechnics, to now 120 and 100 respectively for the 2017 Unified Tertiary Matriculations Examination (UTME), institutions were not under compulsion to accept that as their benchmarks for admission.

Benjamin said heads of tertiary institutions were requested to submit their cut-off benchmark to the board which would be used for admissions ‘and these benchmarks once determined cannot be changed in the middle of admission exercise.’

His words: “The much trending controversy over the just released cut off marks for 2017 admission exercise by stakeholders at the policy meeting is quite unnecessary. Today, we are where we are because many are afraid to say the truth for fear of being condemned rather than being celebrated and set free as commanded by the Holy Books.

“This not withstanding, JAMB will not be deterred, we will continue to say the truth as it is and support policies that would bring our education system out of the woods. Today, it is a known fact that millions of Nigerians are out there schooling in mushroom institutions and they will at the end come back with all kinds of degrees and certificates that we cannot explain their content.

“Our Naira is continually devalued as a result of so many reasons, including the pressure to pay these school fees. Irrespective of this turn of events in our education history, our tertiary institutions hardly fill their available spaces otherwise known as carrying capacity.

“So, it is obvious that the quest to go abroad for foreign education is not as a result of shortage of spaces or standards given some of the institutions attended by these Nigerians but partly due to the fact that some of our policies and attitudes to national values and deep concern for realistic benchmarks for national development.

“It’s also a known fact that for you to study a course say Hausa in Nigerian universities, you will need a credit in Mathematics; however when you go outside like London, all you will need is a credit in Hausa and English, no Mathematics.

“Such and so many other poorly thoughtout policies have pushed our frustrated candidates out of Nigeria to developed and neighbouring African nations for education they could not get at home.

“The question we all should be concerned about is how to address the flight of Nigerians to glorified secondary schools called Universities in Ghana, Uganda and even Gambia and others.

“How do we ensure that whatever we do has positive multiplier effects on other sectors of the economy? If we deny our candidates the opportunity to school in Nigeria, they will find their way out and in doing that deplete our economic base.

“To provide answers to all these challenges, stakeholders decided that institutions should be allowed to determine their cut-off marks according to their peculiarities and the quality and standards they want to be known for.

“It is expedient to state here that the worst admitted cut-off mark in a Nigerian institution is far better than allowing them to fly out to some of the institution they are attending out there which we all know are nothing to be proud of.

“Besides, events have shown that many institutions do not comply with cut-off marks in the past; hence the flood of requests for regularisation. Now, the new management has resolved to stop it and ensure full compliance with resolutions on cut off-marks.

“JAMB will equally ensure that it correct all anomalies existing especially as regards the powers of institutions to make pronouncements on admissions and other related matters affecting the institutions.

“The public should not forget that JAMB is a creation of the demands of the then Vice Chancellors for a central institution that will streamline the process of admission and eliminate multiplicity of entrance examination and admissions.

“In view of this mandate, JAMB will confine itself to this provisions especially the conduct of examinations and release of results to the institutions. It is also very misleading to say that Vice-Chancellors reject the cut-off mark. This may be the editors’ power of caption, you can only reject an offer and not when the power to determine such privilege lays squarely on your hands.

“All Heads of tertiary institutions were requested to submit their cut off benchmark to the Board which will then be used for the admission. And these benchmarks once determined cannot be changed in the middle of admission exercise. Again, it is necessary to explain that the 120 mark does not in any way suggest that once you have 120 then admission is sure for you. Institutions will admit from the top to the least mark.

“We are now starting the actually monitoring of adherence to admissions guidelines, cut-off marks inclusive. The cut-off marks being branded by the public as previous cut-off mark were never strictly followed by most institutions. The institutions were going behind to admit candidates with far less with others admitting candidates who never sat for JAMB.

“This act to say the least is very distasteful and damaging to our national data and identity. Unfortunately, the public has been kept away from this fact for such a long time and now that we are saying it the way it is and working to address it, the public is criticising us using non-existing paremetres that were only announced and not followed.

“In years past, admissions were done with worst cut-off marks. We are determined and ready to correct all these with the 2017 exercise. JAMB has designed a Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS) to check back-door admission and other unwholesome practices associated with admission.

“We are sure that the system will bring out the good In us as it will also make provision for candidates to track their admission. This empowers them to raise queries if a candidate they have better scores over and other prerequisites are admitted which CAPS will not allow anyway. This is the inclusiveness and transparency that education needs.”

Corruption: Nigeria Immigration Service Bans Cash Payments At Passport Offices

Featured Image

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has placed a ban on cash payments for passport processing as part of measures to eradicate corruption at all passport offices nationwide.‎

This is contained in a statement issued on Monday by the NIS spokesperson, Sunday James, and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.

According to him, the Comptroller General of the NIS, Mr Muhammad Babandede, has directed that henceforth all payments for passport processing must be done online and through designated banks‎.‎

James also said that the NIS boss had, in a circular, directed‎ all passport control officers not to allow cash payments in any of the passport premises.

‎“All payments in respect to passport processing are to be done by applicants through banks to generate application ID and reference number on the NIS portal and not through an individual or touts,” he said.

‎He added that the NIS CG has also ordered an‎ investigation into allegations of passport racketeering at some passport offices in Lagos with a view to sanitising the system.‎

James, therefore, urged passport applicants to ensure that all categories of Nigerian passports fees were done online. ‎

“Passport applicants are therefore strongly advised to visit the NIS website to confirm the approved fees for all categories of Nigerian Passports and age groups before making payments,” he added.

He said that the management of all passport offices have been directed to paste all information required at the premises to guide applicants in line with the executive orders.

‎He urged Nigerians to direct any complaint or enquiries to 07080607900 and the email address

The spokesperson advised applicants against patronising touts or agents‎ in order to ensure efficient service delivery.

Naira Loses As Dollar Supply Declines

Featured Image

Nigeria’s currency naira plunged N3 to N370 against the United States dollar on Friday, August, 25, as dollar supply from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) continued to decline.

The local currency, which used to hover between 360 and 365 to the greenback, has been trading between 367/dollar and 370/dollar in recent weeks, due to the huge demand for the dollar.

It is also understood that the country’s apex bank has been slowing down in its weekly sale of foreign exchange.

The Association of Bureau De Change Operators has said the CBN needed to converge the exchange rate in order to stabilise the naira.

Economic and financial experts have also called for the convergence of the exchange rate.

Meanwhile, the naira is expected to appreciate marginally both on the investors’ foreign exchange window and on the black market this week as dollar liquidity is seen rising on the back of offshore inflows.

The naira was quoted at 366.79 per dollar for investors, and traded at around 305.90/dollar on the official market window.

The CBN has been injecting the US currency into the market even as dollar liquidity swelled with rising investor interest in Nigerian assets.

The country’s overnight lending rate dropped to 12 per cent on Friday after spiking to almost 100 per cent on Wednesday due to a liquidity squeeze as lenders paid for hard currency and treasury bills purchased from the CBN.

Money market rates had moderated on Thursday after the Federal Government disbursed N224.54bn ($715.10m) in budget allocations to the three tiers of government, boosting liquidity, Reuters reported.

ASUU Strike: Union To Discuss With Nigerian Govt This Week

Featured Image

Reports have emerged that the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) may meet with the Federal Government this week to discuss about the ongoing strike embarked upon by the union.

ASUU, an umbrella body of all university lecturers in the country, is currently on strike over the federal government’s failure to fulfil its 2009/2013 agreement with the union.

The union embarked on the strike on August 13 over issues of poor funding, welfare of its members and the failure of the federal government to honour aspects of past agreements it had with its members.

ASUU Strike Will Increase Prostitution Among Female Students | Sex Workers Tell FG

The leadership of the union met on Friday, August 25, at the National Executive Council meeting, with the aim to determine the direction of the ongoing national strike.

The meeting came on the back of an earlier meeting of the national branches held across the country on Wednesday to decide on whether the strike should continue or not.

In the meeting, all the branches were told to submit their respective reports to the national body who will take a final decision.

Specifically, the national branches were given three options by the national body to choose from at their deliberations, which are: to continue with the strike action, suspend the action or, ‘positively review the federal government proposal.’

The Punch is reporting that the union would present its position to the government on the offers made by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, during their meeting on August 17, 2017 in Abuja.

The FG had during the meeting with ASUU leadership in Abuja offered to pay N23bn and a monthly payment of  N1.5bn pending the outcome of the forensic audit being carried out by the Ministry of Finance.

It could not be immediately ascertained if the money had been paid as promised by the government.

At the meeting of the union, it was gathered that over 80 per cent of the union members across the country voted that the strike should continue until the government fulfilled its part of the bargain.

A source, who spoke on the development, said: “The ASUU meeting which held last Saturday at UniAbuja discussed the offers made by the government and whether the strike should be called off on the basis of the offers made by the government.

“It was decided that ASUU might seek an audience with the government this week to negotiate further concessions before the strike is called off.”

Meanwhile, the online newspaper also reported that findings on Sunday showed that university lecturers who were employed after 2010 would not benefit from the N23bn Earned Academic Allowances released by the Federal Government.

A source in ASUU in the South-West said, “There was an ASUU NEC meeting held on Friday in Abuja. Our zonal chairmen would be briefed on the outcome of deliberations on the NEC meeting particularly on the N23bn which was offered by the Federal Government.

“The about nine zones of ASUU will be meeting on Monday (today) to brief their members on the outcome of their deliberations concerning the ongoing strike over the 2009 agreement by the Federal Government.

“Top on the agenda to be discussed includes the N23bn which the government had recently agreed to pay. The N23bn is the arrears of 2009 and 2010. So, anybody that was employed after 2010 may not even benefit from it because that person did not earn it. The money is called Earned Academic Allowance, so you must have worked for the money and earned it.

“The money is just like overtime and it is paid for somebody that had done that work, not the normal working hours. It is earned and (exclusively) for 2009 and 2010. The Federal Government made an offer and collected views from all branches as to what they will do concerning the N23bn offer.”

Guardiola: Premier League Is Not The Toughest

Featured Image

Pep Guardiola believes the Premier League is not the toughest in the world, pointing to their failure in Europe as a factor.

The Spanish manager is in his second year at City , with no trophies so far, after winning trophies with Barcelona and Bayern Munich.

However, Guardiola believes the Premier League is not as tough as the fans think and they must triumph in Europe, before that can happen.

“I know you like to hear, ‘It is the toughest one, congratulations’. You are the most viewed,” Guardiola said, via the Mirror.

“Of course the Premier League is tough, so tough. But I would not say going to the [Santiago] Bernabeu, Camp Nou, [Athletic] Bilbao, Sevilla is easy.

“Because in the last decade all the Spanish teams arrive in the Champions League and Europa League. Winning the Europa League — like Sevilla did three times in a row.

“The Premier League will be tough when — this is going to happen — with five teams in the Champions League, they can achieve the last rounds.

“After we can say, ‘That is the toughest league’. We have to make that step.”

Zidane: Bale Is A Key Madrid Player

Featured Image

Gareth Bale was booed and jeered by the Real Madrid fans, but Zidane insists he still remains a key memeber of the squad.

Real Madrid played a 2-2 draw against Valencia at the Santiago Bernabeu and Bale was paid too much attention by the fans.

Marco Asensio was the hero for Madrid, as the Wales international played second fiddle to the Spain international who scored Madrid’s two goals.

“He’s a key player in the squad. Gareth is Gareth. We keep working hard and we rely on Gareth, just as is the case with the other players,” Zidane said.

“Gareth’s situation is good. He had scoring opportunities but did not convert them. We’re going to keep working on this.

“I can’t criticise my players, quite the contrary. I’m very happy with their work.”
