Italy

AC Milan are hoping to appoint Antonio Conte as their new manager in June. The Chelsea boss recently admitted to the Italian media that he would return to his home country at some point in the future, but the Rossoneri want him to replace Vincenzo Montella at the end of the season. Montella is coming under increasing pressure after a dip in form and is widely expected to be removed from his post if Milan fail to qualify for next season’s Champions League. (Corriere dello Sport)

Juventus defender Giorgio Chiellini is set to sign a new contract at the club. The 33-year-old Chelsea transfer target has been the subject of speculation with many tipping him to reunite with Conte at Stamford Bridge. Chiellini’s current deal runs out at the end of the season and Chelsea had been eyeing a potential free transfer, but the veteran centre-half will put pen to paper on an extension of one or two years. (Calciomercato)

Carlo Ancelotti says he will take a 10-month break from football before considering a return to management. The Italian tactician was sacked by Bayern Munich last week following a humbling 3-0 Champions League defeat to Paris Saint-Germain, and had been tipped to return to AC Milan, where he won that competition twice in 2003 and 2007. (Gazzetta dello Sport)

Germany

Several senior Bayern Munich players took part in secret training sessions behind Ancelotti’s back. After the intense style of training under Pep Guardiola, many players felt as though the Italian’s approach was too laid back, with Arjen Robben offering a withering assessment this week in saying his son could organise a better training session. Bayern’s dissenting players went to Karl-Heinz Rummenigge in order to complain about the training but, even when the coach was informed, he did not change his approach. (Kicker)

Meanwhile, Mats Hummels, a one-time Liverpool transfer target, has hit back at reports naming him as one of the players who took issue with Ancelotti’s methods, saying that he had never voiced any concern or unhappiness. Hummels had been labelled a ‘king slayer’ in some reports. (Sport Bild)

Spain

Gerard Pique was targeted by Spain fans on Monday at a Spain training session after the centre-back voted in the Catalonia independence referendum. Spain supporters whistled and jeered in the Barcelona defender’s direction, while police confiscated banners which described Pique as ‘sickening.’ The 30-year-old defender said he would leave the Spain team if asked by the Spanish FA. (Marca)

Alvaro Morata, Chelsea’s marquee summer signing, faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines after it was revealed he suffered a grade two hamstring tear against Manchester City. Morata was subbed off after 35 minutes during the game and Spain’s football federation later confirmed the results of his MRI scan. Morata, who has made an excellent start to his career in the Premier League, is likely to be out until mid-November. (Marca)

France

Neymar’s father has said that his son’s decision to join Paris Saint-Germain for £200m in the summer took him by surprise. The Brazilian has got his career in France off to a flyer, with eight goals and seven assists in his first eight matches for the club, and the player’s father revealed that the idea of winning of the Champions League with the Ligue 1 giants was a factor in his decision to quit Barcelona. Neymar Sr also added that the recent penalty controversy with Edinson Cavani had been exaggerated. (Telefoot)

Burns: Losing To Crolla Not An Option

Featured Image

Ricky Burns has stated he is not planning to lose to Anthony Crolla ahead of their bout on Saturday.

Both lightweights are the cream of the crop at the Manchester Arena and the former three-weight champion expects an exciting bout.

Burns and Crolla’s future will be determined by the crucial all-Britain bout, with the lose having to rebuild his career to become a title contender again.

Asked what he would need to do to get another title shot if he is beaten by Crolla, Burns told Sky Sports: “I’m not losing on Saturday, so I am not even going to answer that!

“In my eyes, this is going to be my hardest fight and I need to make sure I go out and win it.

“Anthony is a great guy. I get on well with him, we have sparred before, both of us like to keep ourselves to ourselves and do our talking in the ring.

“Once the first bell goes, that is when it comes down to business, and you’re not wanting to lose so the fans can expect a great fight.”

“Every fight is different,” said the 34-year-old.

“Both of our last fights, we lost at a higher level, but we are expecting a tough fight, we have trained for a hard fight, and the best man will win.”

Giggs Pleased With Rashford-Martial Battle

Featured Image

Manchester United legend, Ryan Giggs is quite pleased with the fight between Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial for a spot in the starting XI.

Rashford has started six league matches this season, however, five goals from Martial in all competitions has seen him play both UCL games.

The young England international has stated his battle for a spot in the team with his France counterpart has helped him improve his game.

And Giggs is of a mind that both players can feature in the same team, with Rashford playing a central role , but will like to see them become prolific before that happens.

“The battle between Marcus Rashford and Antony Martial has been great to follow,” Giggs said to Sky Sports.

“I could definitely see them in the same team, with Marcus being more of a natural centre-forward whereas Martial is more of a left-sided forward but can also play centrally.

“They have got incredible pace so they are extremely dangerous, although to be considered top players they need to be scoring 20 goals a season.”

Arrested Suspect In Killing Of GUS Winner, Hector Jobarteh Says He Was Killed By Mistake

Featured Image

The main suspect in the murder of Gulder Ultimate Search 2006 winner, Hector Jobarteh, 39-year-old Ismaila Adeyemi said yesterday that the deceased was killed by mistake.

The suspect disclosed that the late Hector’s brother, who was just returning to the country was the gang’s main target. The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Imohimi Edgal, said Adeyemi was arrested after an extensive manhunt.

According to him, “Ismail Adeyemi, who pulled the trigger that killed the 2006 GUS winner has confessed to the crime and admitted to other various criminal activities within the state. The suspect led operatives to Sango Gasoline, Ijoko, where his operational revolver pistol with nine rounds of live ammunition was recovered. The suspect and others earlier arrested will soon be charged to court.”

While speaking with Vanguard, the suspect disclosed that a member of his robbery gang in Ibadan had introduced him to the leader of the gang that stormed late Hector’s house.

He said “We were four that carried out the operation. KK led the gang. He did not tell me where we were going. He only spoke with Nonso a member of my gang in Ibadan, who introduced me to him. I was the only Yoruba man among them. Others were Igbo. We parked our operational vehicle at a filling station close to the street where we were going to operate. Later, a black-complexioned lady came and spoke with KK in Igbo Language. She stayed with us for a while before leaving. Few minutes later, she called KK on the phone to inform him that the vehicle in which our target was, was approaching. After the call the car drove past us into the street. But we lost sight of it before we could turn. KK approached a woman on the street and demanded to know the exact compound the car drove into. He lied to the woman that the vehicle in question broke our side mirror and drove off. The woman pointed down the street. KK took time to check each compound until he saw the vehicle inside one of the compounds. He approached a lady in the compound and requested for the exact apartment of owner of the vehicle. The lady only pointed upstairs, but refused to go with KK. At that point, KK pointed a gun at her and ordered her to lead him upstairs. When he got there, he called two of us to join him. But when I went upstairs, I discovered he had shot an old man for refusing to cooperate with him.”

“At that point, a young man rushed out of the room. He was coming towards his father, but KK thought he was approaching him and, in defence, shot him ( Hector Jobarteh). Thereafter, we went inside and collected the bags that the returnee came with and left the scene. We drove to a hideout in Ijaye, where we opened the bag and discovered it contained just children canvass, flowers, boxers and personal effects. I only got a white phone from the items, which I gave to my brother to sell. He sold it for N7,000, out of which I gave him N2,000. So, I got only N5,000 from that operation. The intention was never to kill the wrong man. He was mistaken for the real target. The plan was to attack the man that was returning from abroad and shoot him if he puts up any resistance. Even when KK shot the old man, I was quarreling with him and he almost shot me in the process.”

“I am a member of a robbery gang. We operate sometimes in Lagos, but mainly in Ibadan. I brought two guns from Ibadan for this operation. We were all armed on that day, but I never fired a shot.”

According to reports, the suspect’s apartment was searched and the exact outfit that he was described to have worn on the day of the shooting was found. However, Adeyemi said the outfit described wasn’t worn by him but by KK, who he claimed pulled the trigger on late Hector.

“KK wore brown guinea brocade on a pair of jean trousers, while I wore a native also. But I was not the one that fired the shot. I was arrested through the phone I took. I don’t know how the Police traced the phone to the buyer, who in turn mentioned my brother as the person that sold it to him.” He explained.

Crolla: Fighting Linares Has Made Me Better

Featured Image

Anthony Crolla says after two defeats to Jorge Linares, that he will be a much better fighter when he faces Ricky Burns in an important lightweight clash.

The Mancunian boxer suffered back-to-back points defeat at the hands of Linares and needs a win against Burns at the Manchester Arena to project him back to lofty heights.

Crolla who failed to win back the WBA lightweight belt from Linares in March, says he is a better fighter ahead of his Saturday clash against Burns.

“I believe definitely I’m a better fighter through them fights and on Saturday night I know I’ve got to be at my very best,” Crolla told Sky Sports News.

“I’m fighting a three-weight world champion, Ricky Burns, a fantastic fighter and I think our styles cannot help but gel to be a fantastic fight. I’m really excited for it. I think the fans will be the winner.”

Both boxers are aware of how important the fight is, with the winner becoming a contender for a world title and the loser dropping down the pecking order.

“That’s what neither of us want to do,” said Crolla. “Neither one of us want to be dropping down a level, working our way back up, but that’s probably what the loser will have to do.

“There’s an awful lot at stake. The winner almost guaranteed another world title shot.

“It’s a proper fight, with two lads, me and Ricky we don’t talk nonsense, we won’t be throwing punches or tables at press conferences, but we have both prepared to dig so deep, and that’s what I think it will come down to Saturday night as well.”

Oscar-winning actor, Jared Leto has taken on the role of the late playboy mogul, Hugh Hefner in an upcoming biopic.

Director of the biopic, Brett Ratner spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about Jared Leto and the upcoming film. “Jared is an old friend,” he said. “When he heard I got the rights to Hef’s story, he told me, ‘I want to play him. I want to understand him.’ And I really believe Jared can do it. He’s one of the great actors of today.”

Hugh Hefner passed away at the age of 91 on September, 27, 2017.

Back in April, Ratner invited Leto to the Playboy Mansion for the premiere of Amazon’s docuseries American Playboy: The Hugh Hefner Story, an occasion which also marked Hugh Hefner’s 91st birthday. The director had hoped to introduce the 45-year-old Leto to Hefner that evening, knowing that he would play him in the film, but due to Hefner’s health he wasn’t greeting guests.

However, the producer doesn’t seem to be worried, “There’s enough footage on Hef out there that Jared will be able to get as much information as he wants,” Ratner said.

Rohr: We Will Not Underestimate Zambia

Featured Image

Super Eagles head coach, Gernot Rohr has stated that the Chipolopolo of Zambia will not be underestimated ahead of their World Cup qualifying match in Uyo.

Nigeria are the group leaders of Group B, topping with 10 points from four games, having not lost any.

And Rohr says second on the table, Zambia will be given the respect they deserve, as a win will secure Nigeria’s spot in the 2018 World Cup.

“I can’t predict the score line against Zambia because it would not be an easy match,” Rohr told CAFonline.

“Zambia can be dangerous because they also have a good team; I don’t think it would be a 4-0 win for us but the most important thing for us is to win even if it’s by one or two goal difference.

“I have seen a lot of videos of the Zambian team and I must confess they are a very good side much better than the team we played last October but we are not afraid.

“We only have to give them respect but we won’t make the mistake Algeria made by underrating Zambia; they have quick strikers but we shall be ready for them,” he concluded.

Steven Gerrard Speaks About What He Still Believes In Jurgen Klopp

Featured Image

Steven Gerrard has given his backing to Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

Liverpool have picked up just one win in their last seven matches in all competitions, with the team’s defensive frailties being highlighted.

Liverpool at the moment sit seventh in the Premier League table, seven points adrift of leaders Manchester City.

The team have kept just two clean sheets in 12 fixtures in all competitions, but Gerrard, who spent 17 years at Liverpool, remains optimistic about the club securing success this season.

“The league doesn’t lie – Liverpool are where they are, but what I would say is I am really enjoying watching the team at the moment,” Gerrard told Sky Sports News. “I love the manager. I think he has taken this team and the club forward. There is a lot of excitement about.

“I can see Jurgen is a little bit frustrated at the moment but so are we all. We are all fans. Of course, it could have been a little bit better if chances had gone in or individual errors could have been avoided, but we are seven games in and Liverpool are capable of going on a long run of winning games.

“I am very, very confident that this season can be a success, whether that be in the league or in Europe or the FA Cup. I am a big, big believer in this manager.”

Carlo Ancelotti Plans 10-month Break After Getting Sacked By Bayern Munich

Featured Image

Carlo Ancelotti will not coach again this season as he intends to take a 10-month break from football following his departure from Bayern Munich.

The 58-year-old Italian left Bundesliga champions Bayern last week, following a heavy Champions League defeat to Paris St Germain, and has since been linked with a return to Milan.

The Rossoneri, who Ancelotti twice led to the Champions League trophy, have made a disappointing start to the Serie A campaign, sparking rumours that boss Vincenzo Montella could be on his way out.

Milan director Massimiliano Mirabelli has insisted Montella is safe for the time being, although Ancelotti would represent a viable option should the San Siro club’s board choose to make a change.

Vincenzo Montella is reportedly under pressure at Milan
But the former Chelsea and Real Madrid coach has no plans to take another job in the current campaign.

“For the next 10 months I will relax, I will not coach another team,” he told Sky Sport Italia. On his sacking at Bayern, he added: “It’s better to stay quiet on that.”

INEC Warns Politicians Against “Illegal” Campaigning Ahead Of 2019 Election

Featured Image

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Tuesday cautioned politicians and political parties against “inappropriate” campaigning for electoral support ahead of the 2019 general elections.

The electoral body further described such action as illegal, says Vanguard Newspaper.

INEC To Release Timetable For Ekiti, Osun Governorship Elections On Thursday

The INEC chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, made this known during a quarterly consultative meeting with the media held at the commission’s secretariat in Abuja.

“Let me warn political parties and aspirants. We have not released the schedule of activities for the elections. Anything that anybody does is illegal before the law. They should wait for the time table of the elections”, he cautioned.

Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State had last Thursday declared his intention to run for the nation’s presidency in 2019 – an action some INEC officials said was not in contravention of any known law.

Section 99 of the Electoral Act 201 (as amended), states that, “For the purpose of this Act, the period of campaigning in public by every political party shall commence 90 days before polling day and end 24 hours prior to that day”.

Such a person is liable, upon conviction to a maximum fine of N500, 000.

Speaking on the budget for the 2019 general elections, the INEC chairman said though the commission could not immediately place a figure on the budget, but it was already working on it.

“As you are aware, we have concluded the strategic plan. We are now working on the Election Project Plan. Once we conclude the Election Project Plan, a number of things would follow among which is the election budget for the 2019 general elections which would be released next week. We are unable to give you a figure for now”, he said.

Resident Doctors Begin Indefinite Strike In Kaduna

Resident doctors in Kaduna State have embarked on an indefinite strike on Tuesday over the deplorable state of health-care facilities in state government hospitals.

Speaking during a press briefing Monday night in Kaduna, Dr. Joseph Jokshan, President, Association of Resident Doctors in the state, said that the state government had not responded to any of the doctors’ demands issued 21 days ago.

He said that the doctors were pained to begin the strike, but “unfortunately, we cannot effectively carry out these tasks in the current sorry state of our healthcare facilities.”

Jokshan listed issues that prompted the strike to include poor funding, equipping and staffing of hospitals and non provision of living environment for medical, health workers and patients.

He said that members of the association were also demanding for payment of House Officers salaries and arrears and immediate and full implementation of “corrected” CONMESS.

“Immediate implementation of already approved funding for residency training of Kaduna state doctors in their chosen fields, as well as promotion of our doctors that are due.”

He urged the general public to “join us in this struggle and push the government to do the needful.

“This is the struggle we intend to see through to the end, not because we are unaware of the implication of this action but because we are left with no other option,” he added.

FIFA Fines Nigeria $31,000 For Pitch Invasion During World Cup Qualifier

Featured Image

World soccer ruling body FIFA has slammed a fine of 30,000 Swiss Francs (N11,049,557) on the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

The fine was for crowd disorder during a World Cup qualifying match, which the Super Eagles won 4-0 over Cameroon at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in September.

The world soccer body further warned against future occurrence.

According to a statement issued on the official website of FIFA, Nigeria violated article 65 and 67 of the FBC FIFA stadium safety and security regulations and as such was charged for improper conduct amongst spectators (pitch invasions by supporters and invasions of restricted areas by supporters other than the pitch).

Recall, a similar incident took place on March 29, 2016, when fans infiltrated the pitch during Nigeria’s game against Egypt at the Ahmadu Bello stadium, Kaduna.

Also, the German Football Federation was fined 32,000 Swiss francs ($33,000) because fans chanted Nazi slogans  at a World Cup qualifying game in the Czech Republic.

“The range of charges against Germany included fans encroaching on the field and setting off fireworks at the game in Prague,” FIFA said.

FIFA also fined the Czech federation 5,000 Swiss francs ($5,150) for crowd disorder.

FIFA’s attempts to crack down on fans chanting gay slurs saw seven national federations fined for incidents.

Argentina was ordered to pay 65,000 Swiss francs ($67,000), Panama 50,000 Swiss francs ($51,500), and Hungary 20,000 Swiss francs ($20,600).

Robben Rubbishes Talks He Turned On Ancelotti

Featured Image

Arjen Robben has denied talks that he criticised sacked Bayern manager, Carlo Ancelotti’s training methods.

A report in Kicker claimed Robben stated that his son’s youth team has better training standards than Bayern Munich.

The Netherlands international forward has distanced himself from the quote and rubbished it.

“All of a sudden there are things appearing in the media that I would like to distance myself from. These so-called quotes are nonsense,” Robben told NUsport .

“I hate it when things like this happen. I am the last person out there who would have a go at a coach, a fellow player or anyone else. You have to be a man when someone leaves and don’t hit out at anyone.”

Tianjin Deny They Want Ancelotti

Featured Image

Chinese Super League side, Tianjin Quanjian has denied rumours claiming they are interested in appointing Carlo Ancelotti as manager.

The Italian manager was sacked by Bayern Munich in the wake of their 3-0 UCL loss to Paris Saint-Germain.

Back in September former Bayern man, Besler claimed Ancelotti had a pre-contract agreement with a CSL club. The former Madrid coach denied such claims.

Rumours have now suggested Tianjin are keen on appointing him, but the club’s billionaire owner Shu Yuhui has rubbished it.

When asked about Ancelotti, he told Tianjin TV: “I haven’t considered changing our coach, at least for now. [Cannavaro and I] have a good partnership and there is a chemistry between us.

“We didn’t play well enough in the last two games and I know how gutted Cannavaro must feel. He even said to his players that a year-and-a-half’s effort has been ruined by their weak mentality.

“Cannavaro is working very hard and he really wants the team to get good results so as to bring happiness to our fans.

“I like him very much and I hope with the experience gained at Quanjian, he can continue to improve himself and in the future grow into the best coach in the world.”

Patience Jonathan Cries Out “I’m Being Probed By Buhari For Supporting My Husband”

Featured Image

The immediate past First Lady of Nigeria, Patience Jonathan, has claimed that she is being probed by the President Muhammadu Buhari led government because of the role she played in the build-up to the 2015 elections.

Mrs. Patience, who is under investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), said this in a statement by her Chief Press Secretary, Belema Meshack-Hart, on Monday.

The former First Lady, who is claiming ownership of $15.5 million frozen by a court at the request of the anti-graft agency, has asked President Buhari to treat her the way her husband, former President Goodluck Jonathan, treated Aisha Buhari when he (President Buhari) lost the 2011 presidential election.

The statement read in part, “We believe that she is being systematically persecuted and punished because of her unflinching support for her husband during the 2015 elections.

“President Buhari should be reminded that his wife also supported him in all the elections he contested against her husband, former President Jonathan, but Dr. Jonathan did not at any point in time, carry out personal vendetta or go after Buhari’s wife.

“That is the standard practice in all democracies around the world. For instance, Michelle Obama campaigned vigorously for her husband’s party during their last presidential election, but we have yet to see President Donald Trump move against her. One thing is clear: No matter what they do to Mrs. Jonathan, she will continue to stand by her husband, the father of her children, even if it means paying the supreme price with her life.”

Recall that Patience had described Buhari who was the then presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress as a brain-dead man.
