Spain

Real Madrid may be operating slightly differently in the transfer market under Zinedine Zidane, but this doesn’t stop them pursuing the occasional Galactico signing. Having seen many of the recent marquee signings head to Paris Saint-Germain, the European champions are looking to reassert their authority in the transfer market by bringing Tottenham pair Harry Kane and Dele Alli to the Bernabeu. (Marca)

Manchester City are preparing a January bid of £359m on the off chance that Leo Messi wants out of Barcelona. While the likelihood of the Argentine leaving the club is slim, City are undeterred and sources within the club claim “serious conversations have been held” with Messi’s entourage around a possible move. (AS)

France

Marseille have completed the permanent signing of Aston Villa left-back Jordan Amavi following an initial loan deal. The 23-year-old is expected to make his international debut for France soon, and will play his football in the south of France for the foreseeable future. (L’Equipe)

There could be cause for concern for Real Madrid, with Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea emerging as a target for Paris Saint-Germain. The Ligue 1 side are not convinced current stoppers Kevin Trapp and Alphonse Areola are of the required standard and will make a move for De Gea, or Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak, next season. (Le10Sport)

Germany

England U17 star Jadon Sancho, who joined Borussia Dortmund in the summer, has been impressing the German media who are reporting on his exploits at the U17 World Cup in India. After scoring twice in a 4-0 England win over Chile, one report stated the young striker is “proving his talent” at the tournament in India.

The former Manchester City and Watford youngster moved to Dortmund in the summer, and the club’s faith in him is evident given they have requested the 17-year-old returns to Germany after the group stages regardless of whether England make the knockout rounds. (Kicker)

Italy

Japanese left back Yuto Nagatomo is on the radar of three Premier League clubs. The 31-year-old Inter Milan full-back is being eyed by Newcastle, Burnley and West Brom, although the Serie A club have also offered him an extension that would keep him at the San Siro until 2019. (Tuttomercato)

Zenit St Petersburg remain interested in Fiorentina winger Federico Chiesa, despite having bids turned down in the summer. Roberto Mancini’s side are looking to add the Italy U21 international winger to their ranks, while Bayern Munich and Napoli have also shown interest. (Tuttomercato)

Croatia international centre-back Tin Jedvaj is on the radar of Inter Milan. The 21-year-old previously spent time in Italy with Roma before moving to his current club Bayer Leverkusen. But Inter will attempt to bring the much-improved defender back to Serie A. (Tuttosport)

Jordan Amavi Completes Permanent Transfer To Marseille

Featured Image

Marseille have completed the permanent signing of Aston Villa left-back Jordan Amavi following an initial loan deal.

Jordan Amavi is expected to make his international debut for France soon, and will play his football in the south of France for the foreseeable future.

The 23-year-old has even been called up to the full France squad after Layvin Kurzawa dropped out because of an injury.

Amavi played 48 games in all competitions for Villa across two seasons, an impressive record considering the injury he suffered in his first campaign with the club, and arrival of Neil Taylor as fresh competition in January.

Arriving for just under £8m from Nice in the summer of 2015, it’s thought that the fee that Marseille have parted with for his services exceeds that.

Amavi has signed a four-year contract with the French giants.

Paco Alcacer And Gerard Deulofeu Considering Leaving Barcelona

Featured Image

Paco Alcacer and Gerard Deulofeu could leave Barcelona before the start of next season, reports Mundo Deportivo.

Paco Alcacer, who joined Barca from Valencia last year, has barely figured under Ernesto Valverde this term and is available for transfer.

Mundo Deportivo adds that Gerard Deulofeu, who re-joined Barca from Everton in July, could also depart the Camp Nou once again next year.

The winger, who is under contract until 2019, has a €20m (£17.8m) buyout clause.

According to another Spanish news outlet Marca, both Deulefeu and Alcacer are keeping one eye on being included in Spain’s 2018 World Cup squad.

They state that the Catalan club will not allow them to leave in January as they believe the two still have a vital role to play in the squad.

However Alcacer reportedly will make his mind up over the next month if he wants to stay at Barcelona after failing to hit the grade since his £26million move from Valencia in 2016.

The striker has only featured in three games in all competitions this campaign – his last start came against Real Betis in the middle of August.

And his last appearance for the Copa del Rey champions came against Alaves on August 26.

Deulofeu meanwhile has played seven times, though he has failed to get on the pitch in the last two matches.

Nick Pope Discusses Premier League Experience After Signing New Burnley Contract

Featured Image

Nick Pope has helped Burnley move up to sixth in the Premier League table, with the Clarets unbeaten since the second weekend of the Premier League season.

A clean sheet in his first PL game – a 1-0 win over Crystal Palace – was followed by a 1-1 draw at Liverpool, while he kept two more shut-outs against Huddersfield and Everton.

Nick Pope admits he is lucky to have been given the opportunity after Tom Heaton dislocated his shoulder.

“It’s been lucky on my part how it’s come about – a bit by default. But I’ve really enjoyed it since I’ve been in the team,” Pope told the Burnley website.

“The lads in front of me have been excellent and helped me a lot – especially the two centre-halves (James Tarkowski and Ben Mee).

“It’s been a good few weeks for me personally as well. Everyone at the club is happy we’ve made a good start and we’ve got to build on that now.”

Aisha Buhari Slams Nigeria’s Healthcare, Aso Rock Clinic

Featured Image

Nigeria’s First Lady, Aisha Buhari, on Monday publicly slammed the health care delivery system in the country, even has she reserved special criticism for the State House Clinic, which she said lacks basic equipment for medicare.

Aisha, the wife of President Muhammadu Buhari, also called for a probe of the budget utilisation at the clinic.

She made this known at the opening of a two-day stakeholders meeting on Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn Child, Adolescent Health and Nutrition (RMNCAH and N) held at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Her daughter Zahra Buhari had last week taken to her Instagram page to carpet the Permanent Secretary of the State House, Jalal Arabi, for his inability to provide even Paracetamol tablets to the clinic despite a budget of N3 billion for the provision of drugs to the hospital.

However, Mrs. Buhari said she recently fell ill and was advised to travel to London for treatment, but she refused.

Her words: “I would like to be realistic to say a few words concerning health delivery system in Nigeria. It is very poor, sorry to say that.

“I am happy that the MD of Aso Clinic is here. Dr Manir, I am happy that you are here.

“As you are aware for the past six months Nigeria was not stable because of my husband’s ill health.

“We thank God that he has fully recovered now.

“If somebody like Mr President can spend several months outside Nigeria, you wonder what will happen to a common man on the street in Nigeria.

“Few weeks ago I was sick as well; they advised me to take a first flight to London; I refused to go.

“I said I must be treated in Nigeria because there is a budget for an assigned clinic to take care of us.

“If the budget was N100 million, we need to know the way the budget is spent.

“And along the line I insisted; they called Aso clinic to find out if their X-ray machine was working, they said it was not working; they didn’t know that I was the person that was to be at that hospital at that very time.

“I had to go to a hospital that was established by foreigners in and out 100 per cent.

“What does that mean?’’

“I think it is high time for us to do the right thing.’’

BREAKING: 2 Cases Recorded As Monkeypox Spreads To Lagos

Featured Image

The Lagos State Government on Monday announced that two suspected cases of Monkeypox have been recorded in the state.

Speaking at a news conference earlier today, the State commissioner for Health, Dr. Jide Idris, said that the two suspected cases were currently under observation in health facilities in the state, The Punch reports.

He specifically said no confirmation has been made of the two cases but both are currently being investigated.

“Though no confirmed case has been recorded, there is need to sensitise members of the public and provide adequate information on measures for prevention and control of the disease in line with the policy of the State government,” he said.

Yesterday, the Federal Government described as fake and sinister a report that the outbreak of Monkeypox in Bayelsa State resulted from a free medical care exercise it allegedly administered in some parts of the Niger Delta.

Panic As Monkeypox Spreads To Akwa Ibom

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, in a statement in Abuja, said Nigerians should disregard the report which, the federal government said was apparently being spread by some unscrupulous persons to fit into a sinister agenda.

He had said: ”The Federal Government has not conducted any free medical service or care in either Bayelsa or Rivers state, as alleged in the fake report being circulated. So that could not have been the cause of the outbreak of Monkey Pox in both states.

“Monkey Pox is a virus found only in monkeys and it is rare in human beings. It belongs to the same family as Chicken Pox and Smallpox.

”It is suspected that someone may have contacted it by eating monkey meat, thus triggering the current outbreak.”

Issues Arising From Dr. Ibe Kachukwu’s Leaked Letter, By Femi Falana

CLICK here to read more opinion articles

The people of Nigeria were surprised last week to read the embarrassing petition of the minister of state in the Ministry of Petroleum Resources, Dr. Ibe Kachukwu, addressed to President Buhari pertaining to his inability to consult with the president and substantive minister of Petroleum Resources, and the unilateral award of $25 billion contracts by Mr. Maikanti Baru, the group managing director (GMD) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC). Although it was reported that Dr. Kachukwu has since been given access to the president, the details of the discussions between the duo have not been made public. However, apart from sanctioning the officers responsible for creating the wide gulf between Dr. Kachukwu and the president, the allegation of the unilateral award of contracts worth $25 billion by Dr. Baru ought to be investigated in line with the anti corruption policy of the Buhari administration.

Kachikwu Writes Buhari; Accuses NNPC GMD Baru Of Insubordination

In order to conduct a thorough investigation into the grave allegations of the reckless contravention of the provisions of the Public Procurement Act, Mr. Baru should be placed on indefinite suspension while the Presidency should refer the case to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. And once it is confirmed that the said $25 billion contracts were awarded without the approval of the NNPC Board they should be revoked while the recent appointment of the heads of the parastatals in the oil and gas industry should be reviewed in line with the Constitution and the Federal Character Commission Act.

Curiously, the Presidency has demanded for the minutes of the meetings of the NNPC Board. This demand has confirmed that the meetings of the Board, which are statutory required to be chaired by the minister of Petroleum Resources have not been held as and when due. More importantly, the demand has corroborated that aspect of Dr. Kachukwu’s petition alleging that the powers of the Board have been usurped by Dr. Baru. Therefore, the petition should provide an opportunity for the resident to reorganise the NNPC with a view to ensuring that it is publicly owned in a manner that the Board is constituted by accredited representatives of the oil producing commnunities and credible civil society groups, including the trade unions in the oil and gas industry.

Having regard to the enormous responsibilities of the office of the minister of Petroleum Resources and chairman of the NNPC Board, President Buhari is advised to relinquish the ministerial position in view of his busy schedule and appoint another Nigerian of proven integrity and competence to superintend the affairs of the Ministry. If this advice is accepted in good faith and acted upon without any delay, it would remove undue pressure on the health of the president and allow him to attend to other urgent matters of State.

Femi Falana, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), writes from Lagos.

Heynckes: I Am Updated On Modern Football

Featured Image

New, but familiar Bayern Munich coach, Jupp Heynckes says he has kept in touch with European football, despite being out for four years.

Heynckes has been picked to replace the sacked Carlo Ancelotti at Bayern Munich till the end of the season.

The veteran manager, was last in the dugout in the 2012-13 season with Bayern Munich, winning the treble of Bundesliga, DFB Pokal and Champions League.

“I’ve watched the most recent developments, be they in the top foreign leagues with Real Madrid, Barcelona, Juventus or the Premier League. I’ve also been very busy with the Bundesliga,” he told a news conference.

“There were several reasons [for my comeback]. There’s the friendship with [president] Uli Hoeness and the contact with [chairman] Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, which has never been broken down the years.

“I also have a lot to thank Bayern for. They were the springboard to an international career, which then continued in Spain.

“I thought 2013 was the end of my coaching career. I’ve had several offers from top European clubs since the treble but they were never an option for me.

“Critics say I’ve been out the game for four years but football’s not been re-invented. I’ve followed very closely.

“Age is a number and nothing more. Some feel old at 45. I’ve not changed. I feel young. I have the resting heart-rate of a 60-year-old!

“My job is to analyse the situation. Despite the difficult situation, I’m confident we will soon show a different face.”

How Police Foiled Evans Plot To Escape From Custody

Featured Image

A plot by Kidnap kingpin, Onwumadike Chukwudumeme, also known as Evans, to escape from his prison cell, before his arraignment in court, was thwarted by detectives of the Nigerian Police Force.

The Nation reports that the plot was aborted by police detectives, especially those in the Intelligence Unit, while the Nigerian Prison Service (NPS) has formed a heavy security ring around the suspect.

Evans: Notorious Kidnap Kingpin Leads Police To Detention Camps, “Where He Kept His Victims”

Evans, who is being held at Kirikiri prison, has pleaded guilty to the kidnapping charges leveled against him.

But while in custody in Abuja, the suspect had reportedly attempted escaping, before he was transferred to Lagos.

It was gathered that Evans allegedly attempted to give between $50,000 and $100,000 to one of the guards manning his cell to facilitate his escape.

A source privy to the development told the news outlet that Evans was allegedly coordinating his escape bid with some members of his gang by telephone which he obtained through “suspicious” means.

Kidnap Kingpin Evans May Get Death Penalty, Life Imprisonment As Ambode Signs Bill To Law

It was learnt that intelligence officers and IGP’s Special Tactical Squad detected his plot.

The source said: “When Evans was in our custody, he tried to escape but we were able to abort all his plans. We discovered that he had access to phones which were hidden in the middle of loaves of bread, eba, semovita and so on.

“He was making calls from these smuggled phones in the middle of the night, making arrangements with some yet to be identified members of his gang to arrange for his escape.

“We intercepted how he was luring one of the guards with about  $50,000 to $100,000. He wanted an insider to serve as informant to him and members of his gang.”

360nobs earlier gathered that Evans may be sentenced to death or get life imprisonment after the Lagos state Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode signed into law, the state kidnapping prohibition bill, 2016 which prescribes life imprisonment or death penalty for the offence of Kidnapping and forceful extortion in Lagos State.

Literally, the bill – which was passed by the Lagos State House of Assembly on January 5 – provides death penalty for kidnappers whose victims die in their custody, and life imprisonment for the act of kidnapping.

Open Drug Market To Be Shut Permanently By December 2018 – FG Insists

Featured Image

The federal government has insisted that all open drug markets in Nigeria will be permanently shut by December 31, 2018.

This is just as it said it will be introducing drug Coordinated Wholesale Centres nationwide to check the menace of falsified medical products in the country.

The Minister of Health, Professor Isaac Adewole, stated this in Lagos during a stakeholders’ workshop organised by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) in collaboration with the World Health Organisation  (WHO) on ‘The prevention, Detection and Response of Substandard and Falsified medical Products.’

In August, Adewole had first announced the decision when he visited the site for the construction of a Pharmaceutical Coordinated Wholesale Centre at Oba, near Onitsha in Anambra.

However, he said the new measures were designed to allow drugs to be sourced directly from importers or manufacturers down to the end users instead of buying drugs from the open drug markets.

According to him, the FMOH had developed the National Drug Distribution Guidelines, (NDDG) in 2012 to address the unsatisfactory chaotic drug distribution system of the country.

“Coordinated Wholesale Centres to accommodate open market medicines sellers have been approved and are being developed in Lagos, Onitsha, Aba and Kano and will commence operation by January 1, 2019.

“Medicine is an important component of healthcare delivery service and without the infusion of medicines; the health care service delivery system of a nation is sterile.

“A good-quality medicine supply system is essential for healthcare delivery. There is a special need to prevent therapeutic drug falsification in order to safeguard against health and maintain trust in healthcare system. The overall scale of trading in medicine and the resultant harm done to global health has not been adequately accessed,” he said.

Boko Haram: Military Reveals Why UNIMAID Lecturers, Others Are Yet To Be Rescued

Featured Image

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) on Sunday gave reasons why the military was yet to rescue the lecturers of the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID), oil workers and women abducted by Boko Haram terrorists.

According to the Director of Defence Information (DDI), Maj.- Gen. John Enenche, the sect was using the captives as a shield.

How 18 Soldiers, 5 UNIMAID Staff, 4 NNPC Workers, 21 Others Died During Boko Haram Attack

He noted that the military was applying lot of caution in the rescue operations as not to endanger the lives of the captives.

The defence spokesman, while rejecting calls from certain quarters asking for the wholesale bombing of the territories occupied by the terrorists, said that there will certainly be collateral damage should the troops decide to apply full force to rescue the captives.

He said: “So, that is why a lot of caution is being exercised even if you have a footage or real time evidence that these people are there. Once they are being used as human shield, then you need to be very careful on the rescue mission.

“I assure you that actions are on, intelligence is still being processed and strategies are being considered on how to ensure that the lovely citizens come out alive just like some of the Chibok girls.”

The two lecturers in the Geology Department of the university were identified as Yusuf Ibrahim and Dr. Solomon N. Yusuf. The third man identified self as Haruna.

Coleman: Wales Have Earned Golden Era Tag

Featured Image

Ahead of an important World Cup qualifying match with the Republic of Ireland, Chris Coleman says Wales have earned the right to be called the Golden Generation.

A win will secure a playoff spot for Wales and could earn them a spot in Russia if results between Serbia and Georgia go their way.

Wales have not qualified for the World Cup since 1958, but have made history in the last two years, qualifying for the Euro 2016 and making it to the semifinal, and Coleman says they have earned the tag bestowed on them.

“I fought against it when they were labelled the ‘golden bunch’ before we qualified for the Euros but now they’ve earned it. This is a golden era,” he said, as quoted by The Daily Telegraph.
“[This game] is as big as anything we’ve been involved in.

“Dare to dream? I meant every word of that. I say that because I’ve seen the other side. That’s why I don’t have any fear. We look forward to these games because I’ve been in positions where I didn’t know if I’d still be in a job if I’d lost that next game. To be sat here now is an absolute joy.

“If you could bottle the feeling for football the nation had three years ago and compare it to now, it is night and day. It’s an event now in Wales when the team plays. The excitement is incredible.

“Two years ago, a game like this would have been brand new. I don’t want to sound flippant but we’ve been sat here before with these big games and we’ve got that experience.”

2019 Presidency: Atiku And Jonathan Meet In Political Realignment

Featured Image

There are strong indications that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar may soon dump the All Progressives Congress (APC) and return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in a move aimed to strengthen the opposition party’s bid to return to power in 2019.

ThisDay reports that the move to get Atiku may have gained traction with a recent discrete meeting between him and former President Goodluck Jonathan.

Sources told the news outlet that the meeting was held at the instance of Atiku, who was said to be seriously considering offers made to him by a section of the leadership of the opposition party to return.

Indications had earlier emerged that there were concerted efforts by some PDP leaders to bring Atiku back to the party’s fold but that he gave conditions, including an assurance that he would be given its automatic ticket to contest the 2019 presidential election.

However, in the recent meeting he had with Jonathan, it is understood that the duo have looked into the possibility of this condition with both of them said to have agreed that all options should be kept open as the political dynamics of the country remained fluid, requiring a more pragmatic approach to the upsurge in politicking, which the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) warned against last week.

It was gathered that Jonathan also urged Atiku to consider returning to the PDP early enough to avoid being caught by certain provisions of the party’s constitution, which stipulate a period of time a member has to spend in the party before he could be eligible to contest for a political office.

This is coming at a time when the INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmud Yakubu, cautioned politicians against political campaigns for 2019, saying the ban on electioneering was yet to be lifted in accordance with Electoral Act 2010 as amended.

“Atiku was advised to return early to enable him to fulfil the eligibility condition in the party’s constitution and also have ample time to integrate his political structure into the PDP’s,” a source privy to the meeting said.

The source further stated that it was made clear to Atiku that he stood a better chance to realise his ambition in the PDP than the APC since President Muhammadu Buhari looked set to be given a right of first refusal by his party’s leadership.

The source continued: “He was told to note a recent comment by the APC National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, stating that as the incumbent, President Buhari had a right of first refusal even when the decision would have to be his.

“That has been buoyed by Kaduna State Governor Nasir el-Rufai who had practically launched Buhari’s re-election campaign.”

Pavlyuchenko: Russia Will Host The Best World Cup

Featured Image

Former Russia striker, Roman Pavlyuchenko has backed his country to host the best World Cup ever come 2018.

The showpiece event that happens every four years, is just eight months away, with 15 teams out of 32 already guaranteed a spot.

Racism, hooliganism and homophobia are problems fans are hoping not to face Russia and Pavlyuchenko does not expect it to happen.

“I’m absolutely sure that fans will like it and I’m sure that it will be the best World Cup in the history of the World Cup. All the fans will come here and enjoy it, I’m absolutely sure,” he told the Mirror .

“There is a misconception that going to Russia will see lots of people getting hurt, punched and attacked. Anyone who comes here can see that it’s not like that. I’m sure everything will be fine in that respect.

“There are security worries wherever you go in the world but I am sure that the organisation here will be excellent and will make it very safe for the fans.”

He added: “I think people who come here for the World Cup will stay here because they will never want to leave. It will be a World Cup to remember.”
