David Brooks Signs New Contract Extension With Sheffield United

Featured Image

Sheffield United midfielder David Brooks has committed his long-term future, signing an improved four-year contract at Bramall Lane.

David Brooks, 20, has put pen to paper with the Blades until the summer of 2021 after being linked with Chelsea and Everton, and manager Chris Wilder said: “I’m delighted that David has yet again extended his contract – he’s been rewarded for an excellent start to the season.

“David sees his future at Sheffield United and that’s what we want to hear because, without doubt, he is one of the hottest properties outside the top-flight.”

Brooks’ new deal will not kill the speculation altogether, of course, and an offer that cannot be refused may yet land in the Bramall Lane in-tray. But that’s for another day.

Today, United have strengthened their position and retained the services of one of their best young stars in years. Then came the media work, meeting the assembled press. The photos, the interviews. The contract, the future.

All part of the journey. But, for now, the lad just wants to play football.

Kevin De Bruyne’s Agent Speaks About New Manchester City Contract Plans

Featured Image

Kevin De Bruyne will discuss a new Manchester City contract in the coming months to extend his stay at the Etihad Stadium.

Kevin De Bruyne has four years left on his current deal, which is worth around £125,000 a week.

The player’s agent Patrick De Koster told Radio CRC: “We are discussing with City and in the coming months I’ll meet the club to see how to improve and extend his contract.

“De Bruyne has many options because we are discussing the contract with City. But if you see how much Mbappe and Neymar cost you will understand how much he may cost.”

Tuesday’s massive match against Napoli would be the perfect platform to further demonstrate his abilities. De Koster continued: “He can’t expect to win the Ballon d’Or at the moment, he’s still far from footballers like Messi and CR7.

“Everything will depend on how much he can achieve with City, there’s still a big difference now.

“It will be a great game this evening. Napoli are top of the league, but will face a team playing great football in City. It should be a spectacular match.”

WARIF Tackles GBV In Rural Areas With New ‘Gatekeepers Initiative’ In Partnership With ACT Foundation

Featured Image

Despite the modernization of health practices and facilities over the years, statistics show that the majority of children in Nigeria are born by traditional birth attendants (TBAs) especially in rural areas.

These birth attendants also provide care not only during the prenatal and postnatal period of the mothers they take care of, but are likely to be the first point of contact should a case of gender based violence arise in the communities they serve.

Gatekeepers Initiative

Gender Based Violence (GBV) includes physical assault, sexual assault, rape, psychological torture and domestic violence. Women and girls are blamed for provoking GBV and in turn are ashamed and afraid of reporting these incidents to the police or going to the hospital to get checked. As TBAs are trusted members of the community, they are likely to confide in TBAs hence the name ‘’Gatekeepers’’

The Women at Risk International Foundation (WARIF) with the support of the Aspire Coronation Trust Foundation is set to reduce the rate of GBV with their new Gatekeepers initiative and have recently commenced the baseline survey in selected Local Government Communities in Lagos State.

The foundation seeks to train TBA’s to recognize the signs of sexual abuse against expectant mothers and affected women. This training will equip them with the right skills to attend to these women immediately and also offer the option of a referral to the WARIF rape crisis centre.

Liverpool And Arsenal Among Several Premier League Clubs Interested In Signing Sheffield United Midfielder David Brooks

Featured Image

A host of Premier League sides are hoping to sign young midfielder David Brooks from Sheffield United, the Mirror reports.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has been monitoring the 20-year-old since the start of the season, while Arsenal, Newcastle and West Ham have also been tracking him.

However, Blades boss Chris Wilder is expected to put up a fight to keep Brooks at Bramall Lane.

David Brooks was called up to the senior Wales squad for the first time for the October international break, but failed to make it onto the field against either Georgia or the Republic of Ireland.

Chris Coleman described the 20-year-old as “a feather in the cap for our system,” following his switch of allegiance from England.

And he has certainly earned this recognition, impressing following United’s promotion to the Championship last summer, starring in the recent Steel City derby.

Brooks has assisted three goals in 12 appearances so far this season, and his performances have clearly piqued interest in the Premier League.

Harry Kane Is A “Complete Player” – Zinedine Zidane

Featured Image

Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane has described Harry Kane as a “complete player”

Harry Kane, 24, is set to face Real Madrid in the Santiago Bernabeu on Tuesday having scored five goals in two games so far in Group H, and his prolific form over recent seasons has prompted comparisons to Cristiano Ronaldo.

Zidane refused to discuss the prospect of his club pursuing Kane but said he has huge respect for the Tottenham forward.

“I don’t know what will happen in the future, but in the present, he [Kane] is a very important player and key player for Tottenham,” Zidane said.

“He is very good at everything, but what he does well is that he always goes towards the goal and his speed is very good.

“He is a complete player. He didn’t seem to be [when he was younger], but in the end, that is what he is. But Tottenham is not just Kane — it is a very good team and we are going to prepare very well.

“We are playing against a very good team and that is good for us, it encourages us to play a good match.

“Tottenham has always been a great club, but they are constantly improving and they have a great coach. It will be a good game between two strong teams. It will be the group final.”

Italy To Face Sweden, While Croatia Get Greece In World Cup Playoff

Featured Image

Italy will face Sweden in the European playoffs for the 2018 World Cup, while Republic of Ireland will meet Denmark.

Elsewhere in the same draws , Northern Ireland will face Switzerland and Croatia will play Greece.

Italy finished second in their qualifying group behind Spain to reach the playoffs, with their opponents Sweden narrowly beating Netherlands to a place in the draw, with France topping their pool.

Italy had been the seeded team going into the draw as the 15th-placed team in the FIFA World Ranking, with Sweden 25th.

“Italy was perhaps the toughest team, but that’s the way it is with a draw,” Sweden captain Andreas Granqvist is quoted as saying by Expressen.

“We got Portugal in the last World Cup playoff and now we have Italy. We’ve shown that we can beat nations like France, and they’re perhaps a bit better than Italy. We have to produce two top-level performances to threaten Italy.

“We really have to reach the same level we did when we played France. Above all we have to try and keep a clean sheet in the first game, because it can be decisive to get an away goal.

“I don’t want to put a percentage [on Italy’s chances]. They’re big favourites, but we’ve shown that we can cause upsets in these types of matches, so it will be exciting.”

Republic of Ireland, ranked 26th, claimed their place in the playoffs in dramatic fashion, beating Wales in their final group game to leapfrog them into second spot behind Serbia. Denmark, who sit 19th in the ranking, finished second in their group to Poland.

World Cup playoff draw:

Northern Ireland vs. Switzerland

Croatia vs. Greece

Denmark vs. Republic of Ireland

Sweden vs. Italy

“Naturally, we’re just pleased to be in the draw,” Ireland boss Martin O’Neill said. “Being unseeded means it was always going to be a difficult tie. We’re delighted to be in it.”

He added: “If you ask most coaches, you want the second game at home. But with the rules like extra time, it gives the away team that chance to score in 120 minutes.”

O’Neill, who played alongside Denmark boss Age Hareide at Manchester City and Norwich in the 1980s, said: “It will be an interesting confrontation.”

Switzerland were unlucky not to reach the finals as winners of their group, ending the campaign with nine wins from their 10 qualifiers, but lost to Portugal in the final game of the group to finish behind the European champions. They are the highest-ranked nation in the playoffs, sitting 11th in the ranking.

Northern Ireland, 23rd in the ranking, lost to Germany and Norway in their final two qualifiers but still finished four points clear of Czech Republic to seal their place in the playoffs.

Northern Ireland boss Michael O’Neill said: “It was going to be tough whoever we got but we’re capable of going through to the finals in Russia.

“The most important thing is not to concede in the first leg as away goals can prove to be vital.”

Meanwhile, 18th-ranked Croatia finished ahead of Ukraine for a spot in the draw and their opponents, 47th-ranked Greece, edged out Bosnia and Herzegovina in their group.

Croatia coach Zlatko Dalic said: “It will be a difficult job. I trust my team and I hope we do a good job.”

The first legs for each tie will take place from Nov. 9-11 with the second legs on Nov. 12-14.

Arsenal Now Looking To Offload Mesut Ozil In January

Featured Image

Arsenal are now actively looking for a buyer for Mesut Ozil after accepting that the midfielder will not sign a new contract.

Mesut Ozil will be free to leave the Emirates at the end of the season as that is when his current deal is due to expire.

According to The Mirror, the Gunners are looking for a club to take on Ozil, whose camp have been demanding £350,000-a-week wages from the North London club.

The report claims that club officials are growing frustrated with the player’s attitude and performances, which have come under scrutiny many times during his four-year career at Arsenal.

Arsene Wenger refused to criticise Ozil for his part in Watford’s winner against the Gunners on Sunday when his lame attempt to shield the ball eventually to Tom Cleverley’s stoppage time winner.

But behind-the-scenes, there was fury at the midfielder’s poor defensive work in the lead up to Watford’s goal.

It isn’t the first time Ozil’s desire has been questioned. Sources claim his effort in training has dropped significantly in recent months; the dip even been noticed by players.

AC Milan’s Andre Silva Lined Up As Potential Replacement For Alexis Sanchez

Bayern Munich Considering Making A Bid For Thomas Lemar

Bayern Munich are considering a move for Arsenal and Liverpool target Thomas Lemar, reports Kicker.

Liverpool and Arsenal were both keen on signing the Frenchman during the summer transfer window – Monaco’s vice-president Vadim Vasilyev recently said that the Gunners came closest to securing his signature – but he stayed put at the Ligue 1 club.

Both Premier League clubs are set to face further competition to land the winger in the future though, with Kicker reporting that Bayern Munich are considering making a move for him.

With Jupp Heynches replacing Carlo Ancelotti at the Allianz Arena, it’s claimed the new boss is ready to send summer loan signing James Rodriguez back to Real Madrid – and he already wants Thomas Lemar as his replacement.

Rodriguez joined Bayern on a two-year loan with a view to making the move permanent, but it’s claimed the deal could be brought to a quick end.

Cagliari Sack Manager Massimo Rastelli After Losing Six Out Of Eight Serie A Matches

Featured Image

Cagliari have sacked coach Massimo Rastelli.

The club is 13th in the Serie A table having managed just six points from eight league matches.

Massimo Rastelli sack comes two days after a 3-2 home loss to previously winless Genoa.

It was the Sardinian club’s sixth loss in eight matches, fourth straight defeat and third consecutive at home.

It is the longest the Italian league has gone without a firing since 1998, when Luigi Simoni was fired by Inter Milan after the 11th round.

In a statement, Cagliari thanked Rastelli for leading the club to the Serie B title in 2016 and an 11th place finish in the top division last season.

A replacement was not immediately named.

Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly has emerged as a Barcelona transfer target. The Senegalese centre-half, who was also linked with Chelsea in the summer, decided to stay with Napoli in order to help them challenge for the Serie A title.

Fast and technically gifted, Barcelona have identified him as a proficient ball-playing defender who could fit in well at the Nou Camp.

But it might take a bid of around £60m to lure the 26-year-old away from Naples. (Mundo Deportivo)

Napoli boss Maurizio Sarri was coy on whether he would rotate his players for Tuesday’s Champions League showdown with Manchester City.

It is believed that Sarri will rest some of his key players with one eye on Napoli’s top-of-the-table Serie A clash with Inter Milan this weekend. Sarri also criticised the scheduling of his side’s fixtures, with high-intensity games against Roma, City and Inter in the space of a week. (La Gazzetta dello Sport)

City boss Guardiola, meanwhile, has praised Napoli’s style of football and described Tuesday’s clash at the Etihad Stadium as a “big test” for his players.

“As both a spectator and a coach I like to watch Napoli, and when I’m at home I like to watch their matches. Moreover, I learn a lot. Napoli represent a big test for us, and this clash fascinates me.” (Corriere dello Sport)

Germany

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has hit back at critics ahead of his side’s Champions League clash with Slovenian side Maribor.

The Reds have won only one of their last eight games, but the former Borussia Dortmund boss took exception to a question from a reporter asking if he does not win enough crucial games.

“So, you are saying I am a charismatic, funny loser?” Klopp said. (Bild)

RB Leipzig would not have allowed Naby Keita to join Liverpool had there been no release clause in his contract, according to the German club’s CEO.

Oliver Mintzlaff said Leipzig were surprised that Keita managed to attract such a sizeable bid after the Reds triggered a £48m clause in his contract.

“We did not presume that only after a few months there’d be a club willing to pay significantly more,” Mintzlaff said. (Kicker)

Netherlands

Louis van Gaal is still unhappy about how he was sacked and replaced by Jose Mourinho at Manchester United.

The Dutchman was dismissed hours after leading United to FA Cup glory in May 2016 and replaced by Mourinho, and the pair were reunited at Anfield on Sunday with van Gaal working on the Liverpool v United game for Dutch television.

“The way his transfer as a manager to Manchester United went was not elegant at all. That resulted in my sacking,” he said.

“In principle, he is not a bad guy. He can be sympathetic and he was this way when he was my assistant in the past.” (Ziggo Sport)

Jardim: Monaco Lack Confidence

Featured Image

Leonardo Jardim has stated that Monaco are down on confidence, ahead of their must win match against Besiktas.

Monaco play host to Turkish side Besiktas, on the back of playing three games without a win, losing two.

Jardim’s men fell to a 3-2 loss against Lyon last week to fall six points behind PSG and have only picked up one point from their last two UCL games.

Monaco are trying to rebuild following the departures of stars Kylian Mbappe, Bernardo Silva, Benjamin Mendy, Tiemoue Bakayoko and Valere Germain, and head coach Jardim said: “Personally, I have gone through many difficult times.

“You cannot be champions of France every year. But for the players who arrive it is harder. When you arrive at the French champions, everyone has dreams.

“The problem is that they lack the confidence to do things well. We must remain at the level of champions of France. Sometimes you’re down, but you have to work to get back, that’s life.

“It will be a key game. We need to win to qualify. If we do not win, first place will be difficult to reach and we will probably have to aim for the second.

“The most difficult thing is juggling the league and the Champions League. There are only five or six clubs in Europe capable of performing in both competitions every season,” Jardim told UEFA.

“This is my fourth Champions League campaign. The team and I know very well that every match is tough. It’s a competition where you are punished straight away for the slightest mistake. So in the Champions League, you always need a team with a very good balance in the pitch.

“I’m a coach who likes to adapt to the players I have. Obviously, I always prefer attacking football. But depending on the players at your disposal, you decide whether you can be more aggressive going forward, more balanced, or more defensive. A good coach is able to get the best out of what he has available.

“Again, certain key players from last season have gone. But we have brought in some young talents. They still need to get their bearings at this level. That’s normal. Some seasons are better than others. But in the end, we have always achieved our objectives.”

CATCH.ER

“Walter has a way of capturing moments from intriguing angles, focusing on certain subjects and objects to drive home a point, something I also really enjoyed in Gbomo Gbomo Express.  Then there’s the transitioning as the tale unfolds; an area that needs so much work in Nollywood, but is executed really well with an underlying score that elevates the mood and flow of the film.”- TheMoviePencil.com

Buhari Reacts As 27 People Die In Fresh Plateau Attack

Featured Image

President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered the military and the police to do all it takes to put an instant end to the violence in Plateau state; ensuring no reprisal attacks.

It was gathered that no less than 27 people were killed during an attack in Nkiedonwhro village of Irigwe chiefdom in Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State in the wee hours of Monday.

Following the series of attacks said to be carried out by suspected Fulani herdsmen, the State Governor, Simon Lalong, had declared a dusk to dawn curfew in the local government area.

Despite the curfew declared last Friday, midnight attacks still persist in the Chiefdom with many residents already fleeing the troubled area.

However, in a statement on Monday, the senior special assistant to the president on media and publicity, Garba Shehu, quoted Buhari as saying the “madness has gone too far.”

According to Shehu, the president directed the security agencies to ensure that there are no further attacks or reprisal attacks.

The statement read: “President Muhammadu Buhari has received with deep sadness and regret, news of the recent killings of at least 20 people in Plateau state, during what has been described as a reprisal attack by some herdsmen.”

“President Buhari believes that this madness has gone too far. He has instructed the military and the police to not only bring the violence to an instant end, but to draw up a plan to ensure that there are no further attacks and reprisal attacks by one group against the other.

“President Buhari is devoted to the sanctity of Nigeria’s unity, and he encourages Nigerians of all groups to learn to live together in peace and harmony.

“He commiserates with the governor and people of Plateau State, and with those who lost their loved ones, friends and family: May God comfort them as only he can.”

Meanwhile, on Monday evening, the remains of the 27 victims of the attacks had been given a mass burial amidst wailing and outpouring of emotions in the village.
