Nigerian ‘Underwear Suicide Bomber’ Abdulmutallab Sues US Over ‘Maltreatment In Prison’

Featured Image

Farouk Abdulmutallab, a Nigerian man, who is serving a life sentence for his failed attempt to blow up an international flight near Detroit on behalf of al Qaeda in 2009, is reportedly suing the government of the United States over the way he has been treated in prison.

Dubbed the “underwear bomber”, Abdulmutallab is said to be suing the U.S. Justice Department, Federal Bureau of Prisons and Attorney General Jeff Sessions for denying him free speech and religious rights.

It is understood that he is accusing the US of “infringing on his rights and maltreating him”.

He had on Christmas Day 2009 attempted to set-off a bomb hidden in his underwear during an Amsterdam to Detroit flight.

Abdulmutallab, who was then 22, was sentenced to life imprisonment and jailed at the United States Penitentiary-Administrative Maximum Facility in Florence, Colorado.

But in a suit filed on his behalf by Gail Johnson, his attorney, Abdulmutallab alleged that prison officials were violating his rights by holding him in solitary confinement.

Within the court filing, Abdulmutallab complains of being held in long-term solitary confinement under Special Administrative Measures (SAMs).

“The SAMs imposed on Mr. Abdulmutallab prohibit him from having any communication whatsoever with more than 7.5 billion people, the vast majority of people on the planet,” states the complaint, which was first reported in The Denver Post

He said his communication with relatives had been restricted and he was force-fed when he went on a hunger strike.

The 30-year-old also claimed that the guards allowed “white supremacists” to distract him during prayer times, desecrated his prayer cloth and books.

“Prisoners retain fundamental constitutional rights to communicate with others and have family relationships free from undue interference by the government,” Johnson said.

“The restrictions imposed on our client are excessive and unnecessary, and therefore we seek the intervention of the federal court.”

He prayed that he should be regularly provided with halal food in accordance with his held religious beliefs.

Gov Ambode Swears In Justice Oke As New Chief Justice Of Lagos State

Featured Image

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State on Friday swore-in Honourable Justice Olufunmilayo Opeyemi Oke as the Chief Judge of Lagos State, at the EXCO Chamber Lagos House in Ikeja.

“I congratulate Justice Olufunmilayo Opeyemi Oke on her confirmation and swearing in as the 16th substantive Chief Judge of Lagos State. I have absolute confidence in your intellectual capacity to steer the ship of the state judiciary on a smooth sail. One area of our judicial system which I consider as work in progress is the speed of justice delivery in the State. “

“We have made significant progress in this regard with the various reforms that have been initiated and implemented, however, I believe strongly that we can do more by stepping up our efforts. I do understand that our judges are currently facing enormous work load due to the fact that the Lagos judiciary is the busiest in the country and this will naturally affect the turnover of cases in our courts.”

“It is for this reason that I once again recommit our administration’s determination to seek a significant increase in the number of judges that we have on the Lagos bench,” Ambode said after the swearing-in exercise in Lagos.

Justice Oke was sworn-in as Acting Chief Judge in September 2017 to replace Olufunmilayo Atilade, who retired on September 24 at the statutory retirement age of 65.

N1.6bn Fraud: Court Sentences Kebbi Accountant-General Dakingari To 70 Years Imprisonment

Featured Image

The Court of Appeal sitting in Kebbi State on Friday sentenced the State’s Accountant-General, Mohammed Dakingari, to 70 years imprisonment for fraud.

Earlier today, the court found Dakingari guilty of N1.6bn fraud and overruled an earlier judgment of the state High Court which discharged and acquitted him on 20 counts of conspiracy and obtaining by false pretence preferred against him and one other by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

He was therefore sentenced to seven years imprisonment each on 10 of the counts preferred against him.

It was gathered that he, among other things, allegedly used his office as the Accountant-General of Kebbi State for personal enrichment to the tune of N1.6 billion.

Dakingari was charged alongside Musa Yusuf, Managing Director, Beal Construction Nigeria Limited; a company owned by Dakingari and used in awarding various contracts to himself. Dakingari’s stake in Beal Construction Limited is contrary to civil service regulation which forbids serving officers from owning businesses.

Findings by the EFCC at the Corporate Affairs Commission showed that Mohammed Bashir Mohammed, Anwal Sadat and Nasir Mohammed, all sons of the Accountant-General, and two of his brothers – Abdullah Mohammed and Habibu Mohammed – are directors of the company.

The construction company operates two accounts at EcoBank and Unity Bank with Dakingari and Yusuf as signatories to the accounts.

The EFCC discovered that Dakingari had two signatures, one in his official capacity as Accountant-General of the state and the other as the owner of Beal Construction Company Limited.

In a statement on its Facebook page, the EFCC said, “Analysis of the accounts revealed a total credit of N1.3bn between May 2012 and September 2013, with most of the receipts coming from the Office of the Accountant-General and the Kebbi State Ministry of Finance.

“Some of the contracts executed for the state for which Beal Construction Company received huge payments included the supply of furniture to 66 secondary schools in Kebbi State valued at N987m; the connection of water and drainage system at Kebbi Central Mosque valued at N110m and the building and partitioning of Mohammed Maira Secondary School valued at N247m.

“Upon the conclusion of the investigation, the EFCC filed a 20-count of conspiracy, obtaining by false pretence and abuse of office against Dakingari and Yusuf.

“The trial court in its determination of the case convicted and sentenced Yusuf to six months imprisonment while it discharged and acquitted Dakingari.

“Dissatisfied, the EFCC approached the Court of Appeal asking it to set aside the judgment of the lower court and convict Dakingari as charged.

The appellate court in its well-considered judgment allowed the appeal by the EFCC, convicted and sentenced Dakingari to seven years imprisonment each on 10 of the counts preferred against him by the anti-graft agency. The sentence is, however, to run concurrently.

Conte Rubbishes Reports Of Player’s Unrest

Featured Image

Antonio Conte has dismissed suggestions of player’s unrest at Chelsea, over his training methods.

Chelsea have lost three of eight Premier League games and played a 3-3 draw against Roma in the UCL.

There have been reports of dressing room unrest, with senior players unhappy with training methods, but Conte denies such.

“I don’t know about this,” said Conte when asked about the rumours.

“My method is the same, like last season,” he said. “Honestly, I think we are maybe working 70 per cent less this season, on the tactical aspect and the physical aspect, because we are playing every three days.

“When you play every three days, it’s impossible to work above all on the physical aspects. On the tactical aspects you have to work less and pay less attention on every detail. We are doing this.

“After two defeats and a draw… I’m happy for the effort and commitment of my players. If you ask me about the last results, I’m not happy. After two defeats and one draw, no coach can be happy.”

Conte: Fabregas Is The Only Fit Midfielder

Featured Image

Chelsea manager, Antonio Conte has stated that midfielder Cesc Fabregas is the only fit midfielder.

Bakayoko picked up a strain in the UCL match against Roma, and Kante remains injured with Drinkwater still sidelined.

And Conte admits the absence of midfielders will lead to a repeat of the Roma formation against Watford.

“At the moment, I can say nothing about the starting XI,” he told a news conference. “We have many doubts. I hope to try to recover some players in these 24 hours.”

Asked if Fabregas is their only fit senior midfield player, he replied: “Yeah, that could be the case.”

He added: “I’m not happy changing the role of my players. I think every player has his own role. But, sometimes, you have a situation where you have to adapt and you must be ready to pay for this. It’s normal.”

Heynckes: Muller Is Almost His Former Self

Featured Image

Bayern Munich coach, Jupp Heynckes says midfielder, Thomas Muller is almost his old self.

The Germany international struggled for form under Carlo Ancelotti and was not a fixed starter towards the end for the Italian manager.

Muller, 28 , got an assist in the 5-0 thrashing of Freiburg and delivered and scored in the 3-0 UCL win of Celtic.

“He’s close to finding his old form,” Heynckes told a news conference. “He started on Saturday and on Wednesday. He ran 13 kilometres against Celtic; of those 13, he ran one at a high intensity. This shows how important he was to us in that game and that he’ll soon be his old self again.

“We have huge challenges and a lot of travelling in the next few weeks. I saw how Thomas sprinted and worked defensively; he was great. He was an example as a captain.”

“I played in the worst Milan team in history.”

Arjen Robben Not Bothered About His Bayern Munich Contract Situation

Bayern Munich winger Arjen Robben isn’t thinking about his future despite his contract with the club expiring next summer.

The 33-year-old remains an important player at Bayern Munich, scoring two goals in seven Bundesliga matches this season, but he hasn’t yet discussed the possibility of extending his existing deal.

Kaduna Moves To Amend Law Prohibiting Alcohol Consumption

Featured Image

The authorities of Kaduna state have begun the process that will amend a section of the recently passed penal code that prohibits drinking of alcohol in the state.

In October 2015, the governors from the 19 northern states had set up a committee of state attorneys general to review the law to enable it meet with current realities across the region.

On May 29, 2017, the code was subsequently reviewed and enacted into the Kaduna State Penal Code Law, 2017 – making the state the first to pass the new code.

However, a section of the newly passed code, “section 383”, which appears to make “drinking” a crime in the state, has been met with dispute and outrage.

While speaking with Premium Times on Wednesday, a source at the Kaduna State Government House, disclosed that when the State Executive Council ratified the draft penal code and then forwarded it to the state house of assembly, “Section 383 retained the penalty in previous editions of the Penal Code against Muslims drinking.”

The source, who sought to speak on the condition of anonymity, however, admitted that what the lawmakers passed omitted the reference to “Muslims” and made it appear that there is a general restriction against drinking.

According to the source, Sections 381 and 382 of the Penal Code criminalise drunkenness, not drinking.

“These two sections show that there is no intent to criminalise or prohibit drinking, and that therefore Section 383 is an anomaly.”

The source also said the anomaly was brought to the attention of the state government in recently, adding that a letter has already been sent to the assembly asking the lawmakers to correct and amend the controversial section.

Jonathan Accuses Buhari’s Govt Of “Lies And Propaganda” | Presidency, APC Hit Back

Featured Image

The immediate past President of Nigeria, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, has dragged the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration to the mud on Thursday, as he said that the All Progressive Congress (APC)-led administration runs a government of lies and propaganda.

Speaking in Abuja yesterday while receiving one of the national chairmanship aspirants in his office, Professor Tunde Adeniran and members of his campaign team, Jonathan said the solidarity being shown to the party even though it lost election at the centre in 2015 is a pointer that “There is something in the PDP.”

He insisted that the PDP, which controlled government at the centre from 1999 to 2015, did well for the country but that the APC has failed the country and its people.

According to him, the APC administration has nothing to show in terms of achievement. Rather, the ruling party has been governing through lies and deployment of hi-tech propaganda to cover up its misrules.

While challenging the leadership of the party to the public debate over its performance, Jonathan said:

“The PDP administration for 16 years did well and will continue to do well. But this administration has done nothing, the administration is full lies and propaganda.”

“In the power sector, we did well to revive it.“A certain state governor criticised our government, saying that any serious government should be able to fix the power sector within six months. But today, the APC has been in power for how many years? Fortunately, the then governor is in the APC Government as a Minister,” he said, fighting a bout of laughter.

“With the rate at which people are coming around to associate with a party that lost elections, it shows that the people still believe in the PDP. With the number and calibre of the people coming out to vie for the seat of the national chairman and other offices of our party, it shows that our party still has another chance”, the ex-President added.

However, the Presidency, in a swift reply, dismissed Jonathan’s statement, saying it was an attempt to distract Nigerians from what it described as the multiple corruption allegations facing his wife, Mrs. Patience Jonathan.

A senior presidential aide, who spoke on Thursday on the condition of anonymity, to Vanguard Newspaper, said:

“Our view is that this was an attempt to divert attention from the multiple corruption scandals surrounding his wife, Patience Jonathan, who in September had USD 31.4 million frozen in a bank account linked to her, following an approval obtained by the EFCC from a judge.

“This came on the heels of an earlier USD 15 million allegedly kept for the medical treatment of her mother, as well as a forfeited amount of USD 5.9 million, following an order by Justice Mojisola Olatoregun of the Federal High Court in Lagos.

“The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has also laid its hand on no less than a dozen property in Abuja, Port Harcourt and Yenagoa, estimated to cost billions of Naira. “To cut a long story short, the story of Mrs. Jonathan’s (mis)fortune, from all indications, is just beginning.”

In his response, the APC spokesman, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, was surprised that President Jonathan uttered the words.

Abdullahi, who served in the Jonathan government until he was relieved in March 2014, said:

“I doubt that President Jonathan actually said these words you have reported because he would be exposing himself to reactions that would not be edifying of his status as a statesman by so doing. Secondly, I know the former President to be of even temperament.

“Only a few days ago, I read that he was counselling his party on the choice of Chairman and Publicity Secretary. Statements like these wouldn’t represent an example of the kind of attitude he was canvassing.

“But if he truly said that, I would say with due respect that he may need to commission a more dispassionate study of how and why APC won the 2015 Presidential election.

“To say that APC won the election simply by deceiving the people would be too simplistic and may even be interpreted as an insult to the millions of Nigerians that voted the APC into power.”

Hugo Lloris Happy To Have Stayed At Tottenham

Hugo Lloris believes Tottenham’s Champions League displays prove his decision to stay at the club was correct.

“From the first moment I believed in Pochettino, and that’s it. It was my feeling when I met him and I was right at the time. He is a great manager and the Real Madrid game proved it,” he told the London Evening Standard.

“Now I just enjoy the football we play. Sometimes in football you live great moments and you live some sad moments.

“But there is a great potential in the squad, a great project in our club, and I am looking forward to see this development. I try my best to help the team and the club to develop, too.”

Lloris made a point-blank save to deny compatriot Karim Benzema at 1-1, and said: “Everything came so quick. He was so close to the goal. I think he probably should have scored.

“I tried to get the most space as possible and then the ball hit me. It’s part of our job — sometimes you need luck.”

Liverpool Not Looking To Sell James Milner

Featured Image

Liverpool will resist offers for James Milner in January as Jurgen Klopp still sees him as a key member of the squad, report the Telegraph.

James Milner has been restricted to just two Premier League starts this season but he impressed during their 7-0 win over Maribor in the Champions League on Tuesday.

The 31-year-old is understandably frustrated about his lack of playing time recently and will be hoping he has done enough to keep his place against Tottenham Hotspur this weekend, and certainly start more frequently in the weeks and months ahead.

James Milner could have sought a move last summer as numerous clubs were interested in him but he remains committed to Anfield. Leicester City were the most active in trying to persuade the former Manchester City, Aston Villa, Newcastle and Leeds United man to leave Anfield.

Jurgen Klopp will need to be careful not to take Milner, who is tied to Liverpool to 2019, for granted or else risk him becoming dissatisfied with his role at Liverpool and looking to force a move away in search of more game time.

Aymeric Laporte Snubbed Manchester City And Chelsea In Order To Remain At Athletic Bilbao

Athletic Bilbao’s highly-rated defender Aymeric Laporte rejected offers to join Manchester City and Chelsea in the summer, according to L’Equipe.

The 23-year-old has spent his entire career to date with the Athletic Bilbao and turned down a move to the Premier League as he is happy at his current club.

Aymeric Laporte, 23, told L’Equipe: “I had the chance to leave but I did not feel it.

“Also because I was injured and did not want to leave.

“Chelsea’s interest? I can not say anything, it’s a personal thing.”

Laporte – who is yet to make his international debut – did open the door to a future move as he feels selectors do not value Athletic enough.

The 19-cap Under-21s star added: “Zouma is playing for Chelsea, Kimpembe is at PSG.

“I am in Bilbao, a club that may not be sufficiently valued in France. Here, it does not prevent some Spanish players to go to their selection.

Barcelona’s Sporting Director Scouting Anthony Martial

Barcelona are keeping tabs on Manchester United forward Anthony Martial according to Mundo Deportivo.

Robert Fernandez, Barcelona’s technical secretary, was reportedly in the stands to watch Anthony Martial during Manchester United’s 1-0 win over Benfica on Wednesday.

Barcelona signed Martial’s French international teammate Ousmane Dembele in the summer but could be keen to strengthen their attacking options further following Neymar’s world-record move to PSG.

The 21-year-old has had an exceptional start to the season, winning his club’s Player of the Month award in September, though that has largely been as an impact substitute off the bench.

That was the case again on Wednesday, with Fernandez travelling all the way to Lisbon only to witness a 15-minute cameo from Martial, who replaced Marcus Rashford late on
