Fela And The ‘Spirit Of Lagos’ By Tayo Ogunbiyi

Though the 2017 edition of Felabration has come and gone, its memories linger on. This year’s edition ended with a special Lagos Jump event at the New Afrika Shrine in honour of the 79th posthumous birthday of the late Afro beat icon, Fela Anikulapo Kuti. Originated by Fela’s eldest child, Yeni, as a way of immortalizing the late Afro beat maestro, Felabration has since grown to become a huge entertainment and tourism event that attracts thousands of visitors annually into the country from all over the world. This year’s edition also marks the 20th anniversary of Fela’s death in 1997 and it incorporated assorted events such as musical performances, art competition, Afrobics Talent Hunt, Fela Debates, Symposium, Secondary Schools Debate and the Felabration Carnival.

This piece was written by Tayo Ogunbiyi. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

The involvement of the Lagos State Government in this year’s edition of Felabration is, no doubt, a concrete reflection of the current administration’s resolve to make Lagos the tourism and entertainment hub of Africa. Aside this, it is a further opportunity to celebrate the ‘Spirit of Lagos’ which the late music maestro, through his music, amply typified. The ‘Spirit of Lagos’ is a metaphor for the never say die instinct of a typical Lagosian who is rugged, determined and relentless. Even in the face of adversity, he stands strong and refuses to give in to defeat or failure. Fela surely represented this in his lifetime. He was bold, strong and unbowed.

Lagos is a land of freedom, a place where the struggle for the country’s political independence was conceived, fought and won. Lagos is a place where opposing voices against repressive government is often the loudest. Activists such as the late Chief Gani Fawehinmi, Beko Ransom Kuti, Ayodele Awojobi, Olisa Agbakoba, Femi Falana and a host of others found their voices against oppression in Lagos. Fela was a freedom fighter who used his entire lifetime, music career and resources to promote the liberation of the African people from both colonial and neo colonial tyranny. Not only this, Fela fought all manners of political tyranny from both military and political leaders in the country to a standstill. In the process, he sometimes lost his freedom, got bruised but was never cowed. This, of course, is the ‘Spirit of Lagos’.

Lagos is a land of confidence and opportunity. This is a great hallmark of Lagos. In Nigeria, Lagos remains a bastion of hope for thousands of people, especially youths, who aspire to fulfill their dreams in life. Lagos is a place where a ‘nobody’ could rise to become a noticeable figure in the society. Many have arrived the City-State without a clear-cut picture of what the future holds. But somehow, they eventually become a reference point in their chosen career.

And providentially, Lagos never disappoints! There is something for almost everyone in the city. No focused man stays in Lagos and wallows in hopelessness. Another popular cliché in the city goes this way: “it is only a lazy man that stays in Lagos and has nothing doing’. True! Lagos offers everyone something. From the art to entertainment and from sports to tourism and across every sector, Lagos gives something refreshing to everyone.

Like Lagos, Fela equally provided lots of opportunities for Nigerians from all walks of life. The brad of music he invented has become a source of livehood to thousands of Nigerians who are involved the genre, one way or the other. Fela gave Nigerians lots of confidence through his music, which he used as a weapon to fight against social injustice and oppression of the masses. He gave them the confidence to voice out against oppression and injustice. He sang: “If you no talk your own, one day of course you will die”. This spurred many Nigerians not to tolerate injustice and tyranny. This is the ‘Spirit of Lagos’.

Fela was a highly detribalized Nigerian who never fought a sectional course. His life transcends parochial interests. He was a national figure with the whole country as his constituency. He never dealt with people or issues on the basis of ethnic, tribal and other such primordial considerations. This, of course, is the Spirit of Lagos. This is what Lagos stands for: A land for all. Lagos is a multi-ethnic and multi cultural metropolis where everyone, irrespective of tribe, ethnic and religion affiliation has a voice.

Traditionally, the hospitable disposition of Lagosians is legendary. It is a global legend that Lagosians are hospitable people who go the extra mile to accommodate visitors. In Nigeria, Lagos remains a major melting point where all Nigerians could feel at home, irrespective of ethnic and religious differences. There is no other State that has opened its doors to accommodate Nigerians of various shades as Lagos does. Everyone who resides in Lagos is traditionally referred to as a Lagosian.

In Lagos State, excellence and competence remain major factors in the recruitment of its workforce. Apart from the Federal Civil Service, the Lagos State Public Service remains, perhaps, the only one in the country that employs its personnel without regards to ethnic and tribal factors. Today, the state public service has in its fold Nigerians that cut across the major ethnic/ tribal divides in the country. While some states in the country employ or even retrench based on ethnic considerations, Lagos state has simply continued its policy of absorbing qualified Nigerians into its public service.

Fela’s nationalistic outlook is, therefore, a true reflection of the nature of Lagos. Lagos is home to all. Subsequent administrations in the State, especially since the dawn of current political dispensation, have gone to limitless length to preserve the multi-ethnic status of Lagos. Indeed, the peace the State has enjoyed over the years is a manifestation of unrelenting efforts of the State government in accommodating various interest groups in the state.

Lagos is the home of rhythm. Indeed, it is from Lagos that the nation gets its groove. It is in Lagos that Fela invented the now famous Afro beat. That is Lagos for you. Many artistes have found in Lagos a place where the beats never die. In Lagos, the beat goes on. While other cities go to sleep, Lagos doesn’t because the beat must go on. For years, using Lagos as a springboard, Fela dazzled the world with his unique kind of beat. Though he died 20 years ago, the beat outlives him.

Lagos is truly the home of rhythmic splendor. The late Boby Benson, Victor Ola Iya, late Fatai Rolling Dollar, late Ayinla Omowura, Ebenezer Obey, King Sunny Ade, Onyeka Onwenu, Jide Obi, Chris Okotie, The Mandators, Daddy Showky, Sir Shina Peters and a host of other top artistes have discovered the nexus between Lagos and rhythm. It is in Lagos that they all had the opportunity to showcase their musical dexterity. Lagos gave them the platform. They enthusiastically grabbed it and in return, Lagos happily wriggles to their beats.

It is hoped that in years to come Lagos will help engender more beautiful rhythm. Meanwhile, for Fela and others, Lagos says: Let the music play on.

$12M Fraud: US Court Sentences Nigerian Sodipo Williams To More Than 6 Years In Jail

Featured Image

A US Federal judge on Friday sentenced a Nigerian, Kevin Kunle Sodipo Williams, to six and a half years in prison over a stolen identity fraud scheme that sought more than $12 million in tax refunds.

The judge also ordered him to pay roughly $900,000 in restitution to the IRS.

Williams, who lives in St. Louis, Missouri, was charged with mail fraud, aggravated identity theft, voter fraud and illegal re-entry to the US.

Williams and others used public school employees’ identifications stolen from a payroll company to file more than 2,000 fraudulent federal tax returns. Williams also used fraudulently obtained identification numbers to get refund checks.

Williams was deported in 1995 but returned in 1999. In July, Sodipo had pleaded guilty to the charge in an Alabama court.

Acting Deputy Assistant Attorney General Stuart M. Goldberg of the Justice Department’s Tax Division and Acting U.S. Attorney Carrie Costantin for the Eastern District of Missouri, said Sodipo entered the guilty plea in a Federal court in Alabama.

According to documents filed with the court, Kevin Kunlay (Kunle) Williams aka Kunlay Sodipo, 56, and others stole public school employees’ IDs from a payroll company and used them to electronically file more than 2,000 fraudulent federal income tax returns seeking more than $12 million in refunds.

He also stole several return preparer’s Electronic Filing Identification Numbers and used them to secure tax-related bank products and services that facilitated the issuance of tax refunds, to include blank check stock and debit cards. Williams used the blank stock to print checks funded by the fraudulent refunds and directed some of the refunds onto debit cards.

Williams now faces a period of supervised release, restitution, forfeiture and deportation.

How Buhari Lost Anti-graft, Economic and Political Battles

How Buhari Lost Anti-graft, Economic and Political Battles, By Odilim Enwegbara

CLICK here to read more opinion articles

Nigerians voted massively for President Muhammadu Buhari. They did so because they believed he was incorruptible. And so the international community believed. When Buhari announced that there wouldn’t be any hiding place for those who corruptly enriched themselves in Nigeria, the whole world quickly believed him.

This piece was written by Odilim Enwegbara. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

Unfortunately, he underestimated how powerfully organised those he wanted to fight have become over the years. So, these sworn enemies wasted no time in reorganising themselves in their fight to ensure he never succeeded.

Being helped to power by some corrupt politicians and business leaders is posing serious credibility questions.

In short, while his enemies were better armed and ready for the battle, Buhari’s foot soldiers seemed not only disorganized, they were truly not ready. Reason also was because most of these foot soldiers had participated in defrauding Nigeria at some point should be shooting themselves in the foot should they fight their former partners in crime.

Little wonder what his war against corruption pronouncement did was to quickly force these enemies of state to quickly go back to work and did so aggressively while Buhari and his foot soldiers seemed to be taking their time.

When these enemies of the state discovered that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC could not give them the needed quick free pass, they wasted no time in using the judicial system they have always controlled.

Aware that theirs were high profile cases, in such a highest bidder system, senior lawyers were brought together in their defense, whereas cheap and inexperienced lawyers were those government could afford.

Soon, their powerful lawyers who happen to be equally close friends of the country’s judiciary began to roll out technicalities to keep these cases prolonged for years enough for them to return to power possibly in 2019.

But, that is not all. They also came together to bring up how they will make Nigeria ungovernable and its unity threatened, so that when Buhari is so distracted, he will be forced to reach out to the same enemies of the state in his attempt to save the country from being dismembered.
That’s why, in these efforts to keep Nigeria one, the now desperate president has easily played into these criminals’ hands who he needed on his side in fighting insurgencies across the country and the increasing threats to the country’s unity.

This forced the president to quickly compromise, including soft peddling on prosecuting many of these high profile cases, as he has no option than to co-opt them into the fight to keeping Nigeria one and stable.

Discovering how the world is in disbelief of the kind of human rights abuses taking place in his administration, strategies to reach out and neutralise the possible oppositions to his government were rolled out.

One of the best and easiest ways to achieve that was using our oil card by handing international oil companies (IOCs) led ExxonMobil and Chevron owned by the ever powerful Rockefellers and Shell controlled by Queen Elizabeth lucrative oilfields.

The oil card achieved exactly that, to the extent that during the UN General Assembly meeting in New York in September 2017, rather than international community questioning Nigerian government’s human rights abuses, the US and EU went as far as praising his leadership.

Unaware of how Nigeria has recently used its oil card to neutralize the perceived undemocratic activities of this government, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Ibe Kachikwu, was crying foul of being excluded from important NNPC decisions, forgetting that being a mere minister of state, constitutionally, his office is nonexistent and that such important geopolitical decisions shouldn’t have to have him involved.

Leaving nothing to chance, the same powerful elite thieves who are behind the endless nationwide political and economic instability too have to be bribed with some marginal oil fields so that they should distance themselves from these so-called anti-government protests and separatist activities. The reason why as soon as they got these oil bribes they began to reverse their earlier positions.

From these, it is obvious that they are not only winners, but in fact they have won both the battle and the war. Buhari administration not only lost this war, but lost big. Having lost the fight against corruption, economy and possibly in politics, Buhari administration may not have what it takes to be reelected in 2019.

Already, unknown to Buhari a coup has been successfully staged against him within APC. That he will come to know in few months’ time when he will be presenting himself as his party’s candidate for the 2019 presidential election.

That day will be the day of payback, the day the president will come to discover how having distanced his government from most of those who worked hard to make sure he unseated incumbent president, they have come together and have agreed on how to deny him not even access to winning the national presidential election but access to winning the party’s candidacy.

When Akande spoke recently he was only letting the president know ahead of time the danger he should be expecting. The game plan so far is that Southern states along with Northcentral states — the now christened Middle Belt states — will overwhelmingly vote against Buhari’s candidature.
The southern states will be joined by northeastern states of Adamawa, Taraba and Bauchi. Even Northwestern states like Kano and Kaduna will slit their votes between Buhari and the candidate chosen by the Tinubu faction, which is expected to be behind the Atiku/Tinubu Presidency.

But should Buhari try to impose himself on the party, the powerful Atiku/Tinubu faction will pull out of APC to possibly join PDP, which powerful leaders of PDP are publicly welcoming, even though it would be difficult for PDP to allow southwest to produce both PDP national chairman and vice president at the same time.

Notwithstanding this, this Plan B has not only since been accepted by PDP in principle, but in fact, has also been overwhelmingly approved by the nation’s political class across board who are increasingly frightened by what they now call Buhari’s divisive presidency that even northern power brokers can no longer rally behind him at a time the whole south has unanimously agreed on no restructuring no 2019 elections.

Also the poorly managed military invasion of the Southeast to dislodge the Independent people of Biafra, IPOB protesters, which, rather than being settled through negotiations was done through a show of military force in the name Python Dance II, which further strained the fragile north-south relationship.

But what seem to recently confirm Buhari’s narrow chances in 2019 are the NNPC scandalous stories still rocking the presidency with conflicting stories about who really approved the so-called $25billion (N9 trillion) NNPC contracts and loans that exposed the massive corrupt in a government that came to power with the agenda to dismantle corruption in Nigeria. This has since forced most Nigerians to now wonder which of the two parties should be classified as more corrupt — PDP or APC!

Another is the bombshell by the President of the World Bank who just revealed that as part of his northernization agenda, the World Bank was directed by the president to focus all its projects in Nigeria on north. This has since forced southerners — including Middle Belters — to conclude that his government is exclusively for promoting the interest of the core north.

These allegations are so weighty for the president to come out unhurt. Making it difficult for him to exonerate himself was his infamous public announcement where he insisted that those who gave him 97% of votes and those who gave him 5% shouldn’t expect equal treatment from his administration.

A director in the Kogi State civil service, Edward Soje, has committed suicide by hanging himself on a tree, in the capital, Lokoja.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) gathered on Saturday in Lokoja that Soje’s lifeless body was found hanging on a tree behind the mammy market at the Maigumeri barracks.

It is understood that the 54-year-old civil servant took his life barely 10 days after his wife of 17 years gave birth to a set of male triplets in a private hospital in Abuja – with the couple reported to have been childless before then.

The Grade Level 16 Officer in the Kogi State Teaching Service Commission, who hails from Ogori town in Ogori -Magongo Local Government area of the state, was being owed 11 months’ salary arrears as at the time he took his life.

He had before killing himself travelled to Abuja and left a suicide note for the wife who also works in one of the federal ministries.

“Psalm 121:3 God will not suffer your foot to be moved: He that keepeth you will not slumber. Amen. You and the three boys, the God Almighty will keep you and prosper you, amen. I love you,” according to the suicide note.

Confirming the incident, the state police command Public Relations Officer, William Aya, said the dangling body of Mr. Soje was found on a tree behind the barracks at about 5:55 p.m on Oct. 16.

Mr. Aya said the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Area D Division received information about the incident from the military intelligence office in the barracks.

“Police moved to the scene, removed the corpse to the morgue of the Federal Medical Centre, Lokoja.

Investigation is still ongoing,” Mr. Aya said.

Family sources said that Mr. Soje had before the incident been going through a lot of financial difficulties due to non-payment of his salary for 11 months by the Kogi State Government.

He was among thousands of civil servants being owed between two and 21 months’ salary arrears by the state government.

Nigeria Pays N2 Billion For Commencement Of Work On 2nd Niger Bridge

Featured Image

The Federal government of Nigeria has paid the N2 billion mobilization fees to contractors for the commencement of work on the second Niger bridge in Onitsha, Anambra State.

The Vice President Yemi Osinbajo assured Nigerians that work on the project would be completed before the end of 2019.

Osinbajo, who was in Onitsha on Friday at the official flag-off campaign of Mr Tony Nwoye, the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Anambra State, said that all projects embarked on by the Federal Government would be completed without exception including rail and federal roads.

The Vice President said that Anambra was the first to start the Federal Government School Feeding programme, adding that the programme had successfully spread to many other states.

He called on the people in the state to support the APC candidate, whom he said would use his youthful ability to deliver on the party’s manifesto.

In his speech, the National Chairman of APC, Chief John Oyegun, said APC successfully removed a sitting president and would do same in the state come Nov. 18.

Oyegun added that there is no alternative than for the people in the state to join the mainstream of Nigerian politics by voting Nwoye.

Earlier, the Minister of Labour and Productivity and former governor of the state, Sen. Chris Ngige, urged the people of the state to identify with the aspiration of the APC for the state.

Ngige said that the controversial N7.5 billion issue between Gov. Willie Ibiano and the former governor of the state, Chief Peter Obi, was necessary for EFCC to wade into and inform Nigerians of the situation.

He said that APC was a united house and would present a united front at àll times.

West Ham Board Will Decide My Future – Slaven Bilic

Featured Image

Slaven Bilic has claimed that the West Ham United board “will do what they are going to do” following the club’s 3-0 defeat at the hands of Brighton & Hove Albion on Friday.

West Ham were thrashed on home turf as Glenn Murray’s brace, either side of Jose Izquierdo’s goal, saw the Seagulls leave the London Stadium with all three points.

Slaven Bilic has found himself under pressure to retain his job in recent months and the Hammers fans at the ground were loud in showing their discontent with the team’s performance.

“It’s very hard for me to say anything clever now. I take full responsibility for it. I don’t want to hide,” the 49-year-old told Sky Sports News.

“It is not a good situation and the board will do what they are going to do. It’s their decision.”

Real Madrid Showing Interest In Real Sociedad Defender Alvaro Odriozola

Featured Image

Real Madrid have contemplated making a move for Real Sociedad full-back Alvaro Odriozola for the past year, reports Marca.

Alvaro Odriozola, 21,- who recently made his senior debut for Spain – was considered by Los Blancos in the summer when Danilo was about to leave for Manchester City, but they opted to promote Achraf Hakimi from the club’s reserve team Castilla instead.

Whether or not they make a move for Odriozola next summer will depend heavily on how Hakimi performs from now until the end of the season, but should Madrid firm up their interest, Sociedad are likely to ask Madrid to activate Odrizola’s €40m buyout clause.

Marco Verratti Admits He Was Very Tempted To Join Barcelona

Featured Image

PSG midfielder Marco Verratti has admitted he was drawn towards a potential move to Barcelona in the summer, report L’Equipe.

The Italy international was already on the Catalan club’s radar and, after a lacklustre campaign in Ligue 1, considered cutting short his career at Parc des Princes.

“For the first time in five years I wondered if I should stay here,” he said. “People think that I play for PSG for the money, but I could get that elsewhere, too. If I had moved in the summer, there were clubs ready to pay €100m to sign me and I would have earned a lot more.

“Neymar, he could have earned as much with Manchester City or Chelsea. He didn’t sign here for the money but the project. It’s the same with me.”

Marco Verratti’s summer in limbo led to him replacing agent Donato Di Campli with Mino Raiola.

But the 24-year-old insisted that he has put all that behind him and has fully bought into Emery’s operation after some open and frank conversations with the club’s board.

‘It was really complicated,’ he added. ‘I didn’t expect a summer like that. A lot of things happened that I did not like, among them people from my side. They thought of themselves and not me. I never told PSG: “I want to leave.”

‘The only thing I did was explain to them some things I didn’t understand. We went through some complicated times last season. We didn’t live up to ourselves as a team that wants to win everything. We were asked to win everything and there were others a lot stronger than us.’

Valverde: Barcelona Could Not Sign Mbappe

Featured Image

Barcelona head coach Ernesto Valverde says there was no chance of Kylian Mbappe joining the club.

The young forward joined PSG from Monaco on loan, with the move expected to be made permanent next season.

Mbappe was linked with a number of clubs in the off-season and his manager said he wanted to join Barcelona when he heard Neymar was leaving.

But Valverde insists the club was not keen on bringing him to the club.

“I don’t know what to say to you. There’s always talk about a lot of players,” he told a news conference on Friday.

“To my knowledge, we couldn’t have signed him. But I don’t know, no idea. I guess not, because he’s not here.”
