Ryan Giggs Reveals Interest In Both Everton And Leicester City Jobs

Featured Image

Ryan Giggs has revealed that he is interested in the vacant managerial positions at Everton and Leicester City.

Ryan Giggs has been linked with numerous managerial jobs since retiring with the Welshman’s only dugout experience coming at Old Trafford in interim and assistant capacities.

However, Giggs has indicated that he is keen to hold discussions with both the Toffees and Foxes, who have recently parted company with Ronald Koeman and Craig Shakespeare respectively.

The 43-year-old told Sky Sports: “I think you look at those two teams, Leicester being champions two seasons ago, Everton being a fantastic club with a fantastic history, for me these are clubs I would be interested in. However, there are a lot of coaches out there who would be interested in those positions.

“I’ve said all along that I’d be open to clubs which share the ambitions of myself. I want to improve clubs and improve players, to enjoy working for them and for players to enjoy the challenge.

“There are clubs in the Premier League which would be good jobs but also in the Championship and League One. It’s more about the philosophy for me than the stature of the club.”

The Return of Abdulrasheed Maina

The Return of Abdulrasheed Maina, By ‘Fisayo Soyombo

CLICK here to read more opinion articles

Abdulrasheed Maina cannot hide forever. Neither he nor the people who helped him circumvent justice in 2013 gave this a thought when he escaped to Dubai. But as he must have found out already, retreating from justice is a big damage to the self rather than the law; and no matter the wealth of cash, power, connections and legal arsenal at anyone’s disposal, clean hands remain the only guarantee of freedom.

Maina — Once the Manna from Heaven

Although he was already director of the Customs, Immigration, Prisons Pension Office (CIPPO), Maina was in obscurity until he was plucked in 2010 by Steve Oronsaye, then head of Service of the Federation, to chair the Pension Reform Task Team (PRTT), after a verification exercise in June of the same year revealed the biggest fraud, till date, in the federal civil service. In that position, he helped uncover the looting of more than N100 billion pension funds at the pension offices of the Head of Service and the Police. From then on, Maina has gone against everything he seemed to have stood for.

Sani Teidi Shuaibu, former director, Pension Unit, Head of Service of the Federation (HOSF); Phina Ukamaka Chidi, his deputy; Aliyu Bello, personal assistant to Shuaibu; Abdul Mohammed, assistant cash pay officer, HOSF Pension Unit; and some 30 other civil servants worked in cahoots to loot more than N100 billion. To do this, they paid millions of naira to ghost pensioners by recalling the names of dead workers and opening fictitious accounts; recruited their friends, and friends of their friends as pensioners; conducted fictitious verification exercises for which N400 million was spent monthly; awarded multibillion-naira fictitious contracts to companies and individuals who took a cut and returned the rest; and registered fake companies of their own to which they paid billions for doing nothing.

In that moment, Maina was just like the Biblical manna from heaven. His team found the looters and handed them over to anti-corruption agents and government prosecutors. The success of the team, many people agree, was due largely to Maina’s brilliance. But brilliance was soon tinged with greed, and Maina became obsessed with enriching himself. For starters, he duplicated the thieving model of the looters he helped government to apprehend. It is still hard to imagine how he exposed others, yet thought he would never be.

Guilty In the Eyes of the Public

Till date, Maina is innocent in the eyes of the law. But that’s where it ends. In the court of the public, his guilt was a long-established fact — because of his public conduct in the aftermath of the allegations against him.

On numerous occasions at the peak of his probe by the legislature in 2012, Maina concocted all manners of excuses, including ill-health and tight schedule, to avoid appearing before the Senate Joint Committee on Establishment, Public Service and Local Government Administration, mandated by the upper chamber to investigate pension administration dating back to 1999. After reaching its wits end, the committee mandated Mohammed Abubakar, the then inspector-general of Police (IGP), to compel him to attend its next sitting. Not even the IGP could bring Maina to the Senate, leaving the Senate with no other option but to issue a warrant of arrest against him. Rather than defend himself, Maina travelled to Dubai the following year, never to make a return (although he has sneaked in and out of the country a few times). Since becoming the fugitive that he now is, Maina has been declared wanted by the EFCC and INTERPOL.

A Shocking Rehabilitation

Despite spending almost all of the last four years in Dubai, Maina, formerly an assistant director in the civil service, has managed to earn himself a recall — and unbelievably — a promotion — to the post of director at the Ministry of Interior. It was supposed to be a secret affair until PREMIUM TIMES found out. There is a plan to rehabilitate Maina; and those who should know have named Abdulrahman Dambazau, minister for Interior; Mamman Daura, President Muhammadu Buhari’s cousin and Abubakar Malami, attorney-general of the federation, as the protagonists. It is a shame that this is happening in an administration that sold the anti-corruption project to the electorate in 2015. How, then, is Buhari better than Goodluck Jonathan, who granted state pardon to convicted looter Diepreye Alamieyeseigha?

Buhari’s hard-line supporters have argued that the appointment must have happened without his knowledge, but even that is big indictment. If such controversial figure is made director and the president is unaware, then he is a spectator in his own government! Dambazau, the HoS and the Federal Civil Service Commission could only have colluded to sneak Maina into the Interior Ministry because they knew they could get away with it. And, if, two days after Maina’s promotion became a media item, the president is still unaware, or is aware but hasn’t taken action, Nigerians can count themselves victims of political fraud by President Buhari and the APC.

From Grace to Grass

Most corruption cases in public offices are black-and-white affairs. The culprits are usually people who deliberately set out to amass wealth for themselves at the expense of the people. If they enjoy some public goodwill, it is because of the extent to which they have used their ill-gotten wealth in ingratiating themselves with the people. It is usually the case of darkness embarking on an inordinate search for light. Rarely does it happen, as it has with Maina, that light drowns its own luminousness with darkness.

That Maina began so well as an anti-corruption crusader only to end up the way he has, should worry anyone genuinely interested in this country’s progress. If policemen are found engaging in armed robbery, it would be hard to sell the argument that we aren’t all thieves. The Maina example makes it more difficult for the few conscientious individuals in power to earn public trust. In fact, the incorruptible among us could start wondering if they would someday be consumed by the very ill they’re fighting. The peculiarity of this case to the mental setup of this government’s anti-corruption war is one reason the president must invalidate this promotion. Buhari cannot afford to handle Maina in the same manner he did Babachir Lawal. Nigerians are watching, and counting.

Courtois: We Will Fight For Conte, To Avoid A Mourinho Situation

Featured Image

Thibaut Courtois says the players are ready to fight for Conte and avoid the situation that led to Mourinho’s sacking.

Mourinho was sacked in the 2015-16 season, after Chelsea faltered in their title defence, with Conte appointed at the end of the season.

Conte went on to win the League in his first season, but Chelsea has had a tough start to their defence and Courtois says the players want to help the Italian keep his job.

“We are ready to fight for the coach,” Courtois told the London Evening Standard.

“I remember what happened two years ago under Jose Mourinho and things started to be said, there were stories about the dressing room without knowing what was happening.

“We are happy to show that we are ready to fight. We all know what would have happened [extra speculation about Conte’s future] if we had lost against Watford.

“There was a moment when we were 2-1 down, we were having difficulties and Watford could have made it 4-1. It was very important to come back to win.

“In 2015 [under Mourinho] we wanted to fight as well but the game didn’t turn out well for us, there was too much bad luck. Sometimes different things happened.

“But we are showing we want to fight again now, firstly as a group of players. We want to win games. We don’t want to lose and say we don’t care anymore. We want to fight for ourselves, too. It is important for us.

“Some of us remember what happened two years ago and we don’t want the same thing to happen.”

Osman: Moyes Will Have An Immediate Impact

Featured Image

Leon Osman, former Everton midfielder believes appointing David Moyes will have an immediate impact on the club.

Ronald Koeman has been fired from his job as Everton manager, after a poor run of games, ending with a 5-2 loss to Arsenal, that saw them drop to the relegation zone.

Osman who represented Everton for 16 years and is an icon at the club, believes an immediate effect will happen with Moyes, but fears the long-term effect.

“I think Moyes would be able to do a good job immediately – he knows the club inside and out,” Osman told Sky Sports.

“Whether he would be a long-term candidate, I don’t know what the chairman is looking at. Is he looking at immediate results or someone who has a real pedigree of winning trophies?

“Or are they looking at someone like David Unsworth from the academy, who really knows the club and can bring the young lads through and inspire an Everton core?

“It’s really interesting to see what [club owners] Farhad Moshiri and Bill Kenwright are thinking right now.”

BREAKING: Buhari Sacks Ex-Pension Boss Abdulrasheed Maina, Queries Head Of Service

Featured Image

President Muhammadu Buhari has directed the immediate disengagement from service of Mr Abdulrasheed Maina, former chairman of the Presidential Task Force on Pension Reforms.

Mr Femi Adesina, the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, in a statement issued in Abuja on Monday, said the President’s directive was contained in a memo to the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs Winifred Oyo-Ita

Adesina stated that the President equally demanded a full report of the circumstances of Maina’s recall and posting to the Ministry of Interior.

According to the presidential aide, the report is to be submitted to the office of the Chief of Staff to the President, Mallam Abba Kyari, before the end of work today.

The Minister of Interior, retired Lt.-Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazau, on Oct. 22, had confirmed the resumption of duty by Abdulrasheed Maina, as an Acting Director in his ministry.

The confirmation came in a statement issued by the Press Secretary to the minister, Mr Ehisienmen Osaigbovo.
Maina was appointed by former President Goodluck Jonathan as Chairman of the task force in 2010 to check the corruption in the country’s pension system.

In 2012, the Nigeria Police accused him of misappropriating N100 billion pension funds in connivance with others.

The Civil Service Commission reportedly dismissed him for “absconding from duty’’.
Maina was arraigned in absentia by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which declared him wanted in 2015.

Mr Wilson Uwujaren, the spokesman of the anti-graft agency in a statement at the weekend, said Maina remained on the commission’s wanted list.

Sunday’s confirmation by the minister followed reports in the online media that Maina had been secretly re-instated and promoted to the rank of director in the ministry.

Harry Kane Wants To Emulate Cristiano Ronaldo And Lionel Messi Goal Scoring Records

Featured Image

Harry Kane has set his sights on emulating the goalscoring achievements of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo during his career.

Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have set new standards during the near-decade in which they have dominated football, helping them to share the past nine Ballon d’Or crowns between them.

Harry Kane has emerged as one of the best goalscorers in world football in recent seasons, though, and with his brace in the 4-1 win over Liverpool on Sunday taking him to 45 goals for club and country in 2017, he is now bidding for a half-century in a single calendar year.

“I’ve told you before, at some stage I want to be the best player in the world and to do that you have to be up there with these players,” he told reporters.

“They set the standards, Ronaldo and Messi, so for the rest of us it’s about trying to catch them and get up there. The numbers are good but, for me, it’s more important to be winning these big games against big teams. It shows we are coming together as a team and getting better.

“Fifty would be nice. We will see. There are plenty of games to go, a lot of tough games coming up, so we will just see. I don’t like to think about it too much. I feel confident, scoring goals early in a game like that helps as well, so I just want to keep it going.”

Juan Mata Discusses Manchester United Loss To Huddersfield

Featured Image

Juan Mata has urged Manchester United to “stick together” following their shock 2-1 defeat at the hands of newly-promoted Huddersfield Town on Saturday.

Manchester United saw their unbeaten start to the season come to an unexpected end at the John Smith’s Stadium, leaving the Red Devils five points adrift of local rivals Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table.

Manager Jose Mourinho was left furious with his side’s attitude during the defeat, with Mata among those to bear the brunt when he was taken off at half time, but the Spaniard has called for fans to keep the result in perspective.

“We knew this moment would arrive sooner or later, although that’s something you never wish for, of course,” Juan Mata wrote in his blog on the club’s official website.

“Now, it’s time to learn from mistakes and keep going, as we always do, showing that the team sticks together when things don’t go so well, which is when we need it most.

“Since the European Super Cup defeat last summer, we’ve been performing really well against all kind of opponents. On Saturday, though, Huddersfield played their cards better than us and took all three points. All we can do now is congratulate them and move on. This is a not a sprint, but a marathon and there is still a long way to go.

“Let’s not forget that, before that game, we had got a good win in Lisbon. We beat a very good side in Benfica, a team with plenty of Champions League experience.”

Stoke City Manager Mark Hughes Doesn’t Believe The Club Is In Crisis

Featured Image

Stoke’s board are refusing to panic despite sitting just above the relegation zone, while manager Mark Hughes insists the club is not in “crisis”.

However, it is understood that the next four games could be crucial to manager Mark Hughes’ future at the club.

It promises to prove a pivotal sequence for Hughes, who can at least take solace in the fact that Peter Coates remains the most sensible chairman in the Premier League. Coates has only employed two managers since returning to the club in 2006.

The problems are piling up for Hughes, however, who has many players badly out of form and a team that cannot stop leaking soft goals.

“It’s not a crisis in my view. We are in a situation in terms of league position, but we do have good games coming up. We’ll be fine,” said Hughes.

“We are very rarely are in the bottom three when the season finishes and we always judge our season on what happens at the end of 38 games rather than eight or nine games.

“The fans have a management team that has been in these situations before and been successful so I don’t think they need to worry. It’s about letting good people get on with their jobs and coming through these periods.”

Glen Johnson was targeted by supporters for a lacklustre showing and boos greeted the final whistle even though Stoke’s performance had gone up several notches, Mame Biram Diouf had scored and the home side should have had a penalty.

‘Our crowd at times vent their frustrations. There were a couple of moments when Glen maybe didn’t pick the right option but it wasn’t for any lack of endeavour,’ Hughes added.

With reports that Philippe Coutinho is still Barcelona-bound, PSG’s Julian Draxler seems to be the man Klopp has identified as his replacement. The long-time Arsenal transfer target is settled in Paris, but Liverpool have been closely monitoring his progress. Draxler has struggled to break into the first team at the Parc des Princes this season, with Neymar, Mbappe and Edinson Cavani ahead of him in the pecking order. (TeleFoot)

Neymar has accepted responsibility for his actions after getting sent off in PSG’s thrilling 2-2 draw with Marseille on Sunday night. Liverpool transfer target Stefan De Vrij has put Premier League clubs on red alert after failing to promise that he will sign a new contract with Lazio. Juventus and AC Milan are also said to be interested in the defender, who would cost close to £30m if clubs tried to sign him in January. “I will meet with the club’s executives, I want to sign a new deal but I can make no promises,” De Vrij said. Juventus plan to activate Emre Can’s release clause in January. Leonardo Bonucci has offered the AC Milan captaincy to Riccardo Montolivo. The former Juventus centre-back joined the Rossoneri in the summer but has so far failed to recapture his best form and was sent off against Genoa, meaning he will miss Milan’s clash with his former side. “If I am the problem, this is the captain armband”, Bonucci reportedly told his team-mates. Real Madrid left-back Marcelo believes Karim Benzema is the “best No 9 in Europe.” Benzema started Sunday’s 3-0 win over Eibar on the bench but came on to assist the Brazilian, who sealed the points with the third goal as Madrid moved to third place in La Liga and to within five points of Barcelona at the top of the table. Borussia Dortmund playmaker Marco Reus has emerged as an Arsenal and Manchester United transfer target. BREAKING: Everton Wield Big Stick, Sack Manager Ronald Koeman

Featured Image

The authorities of Everton Football Club have wielded the big stick on manager Ronald Koeman; sacking him after Sunday’s 5-2 home defeat by Arsenal which left them in the Premier League relegation zone.

The club made their announcement shortly after 1.30pm on Monday, with Everton chairman Bill Kenwright and CEO Robert Elstone having earlier arrived at Finch Farm.

It is understood that Everton owner Farhad Moshiri had given Koeman his backing a fortnight ago after their 1-0 defeat by Burnley, but the Toffees then drew at Brighton and lost to Lyon, in the Europa League, before their Goodison Park humbling by Arsenal.

A statement said the club “would like to express their gratitude to Ronald for the service he has given to the club over the past 16 months”.

The Toffees have spent heavily in the summer on players like Michael Keane, Davy Klaassen, Jordan Pickford, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Wayne Rooney but now lie 18th in the table having made their third worst start to a Premier League campaign.

“I still believe I can change the whole situation,” Koeman had said on Sunday, “adding that he believes the players are behind him.

Koeman became the third Premier League managerial casualty of the season after Frank de Boer left Crystal Palace and Craig Shakespeare was sacked by Leicester.

Hip Hop, Afrobeats, yeah basically that’s what I listen to. I’m listening to a lot of these young guys out now, Odunsi, Fashina, Lady Donli.. Those guys are a whole different vibe o, it’s like a new genre man.. I don’t  know, but it’s mad. A lot of people need to start listening to these new generation cats because they’re the ones going to shape the whole sound of Nigerian music real soon.

Q: You signed with HF Music last year, how has that been?

BOJ: Well, HF Music has been great. I used to say before that I never wanted to sign with a record label but as we all know, na condition dey make crayfish bend so yeah I did it and I’ve been dropping music, I’ve been shooting videos which is basically the aim so yeah it’s been alright, I guess.

Q: About DRB Lasgidi, how’s the group doing? Are we gonna get a collective project from you guys anytime soon?

BOJ: Everyone is doing their thing right now, Fresh L is signed to Urban Vision, Teezee is the brand ambassador for Jameson so he’s ventured more into the alcohol brand thing at the moment and he’s done a very good job with them, all the young ones who are of age are drinking Jameson now.

Q: You seem to be cool with a lot of people in the industry, outside of DRB who’s your closest friend?

BOJ: My closest friend outside DRB in the industry is Ajebutter. I’m cool with a lot of people but it’s not like I hang out with them regularly. The only person I do hang out with a lot that’s actually my friend is Ajebutter and actually Olamide as well. Olamide is close too, he’s a correct guy but Ajebutter is my closest friend in the Industry.

IPOB Threatens Violence If FG, Igbo Leaders Fail To Produce Nnamdi Kanu

Featured Image

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has called on the Federal Government and Igbo leaders to produce its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, “dead or alive” or they “may get their wish in no distant time.”

The embattled IPOB leader has not been seen in public since troops of the Nigerian army invaded his Abia residence during the Operation Python Dance exercise.

The pro-Biafra group had accused the army of taking Kanu along with his parents during the raid, although the army denied having him in their custody.

However, in a statement issued on Sunday by its spokesman, Emma Powerful, IPOB maintained that the President Muhammadu Buhari’s government knew Kanu’s whereabouts.

The statement read: “We are asking Major General Muhammadu Buhari, Nnia Nwodo and South East governors to produce Nnamdi Kanu because they or their representatives all participated in countless meetings in Abuja and Enugu where modus operandi of the genocidal Operation Python Dance II was agreed and ratified.

“It was as a direct result of military invasion of the home of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and massacre of 28 innocent unarmed civilians with many missing that has led us to once again politely ask that our leader be presented to us dead or alive.

“It is becoming clear to everybody that Muhammadu Buhari, Nnia Nwodo and South East governors are desperately trying to draw IPOB into armed confrontation and militancy to justify their genocidal clampdown on innocent people of the South East and South South.

“Should they continue to defy the laws of natural justice and fair play by not releasing our leader, they may get their wish in no distant time.

“As the architects of Python Dance II, Nnia Nwodo and South East governors are under moral obligation to disclose to Igbo people in particular and Biafrans in general the whereabouts of IPOB leader or have themselves to blame.

“We are therefore advising all those culpable in the abduction of our leader, his parents and death of dozens of IPOB family members in Abia and Rivers State to please release our leader to us before things get out of hand.

“The struggle for Biafra independence is a task that must be accomplished whether the collaborators like it or not. No man born of a woman can stop it.”

(WATCH): Nigerian Singer Asa Speaks On Losing Virginity At 28

Featured Image

Nigerian singer, songwriter, and recording artist, Bukola Elemide, better known as Asa, has revealed that she lost her virginity at the age of 28 – but was quick to have added that she was not proud of it.

Speaking in a rare interview with media personality, Funmi Iyanda, the 35-year-old singer talked about battling with depression and waiting for many years before having sex.

Though granted in 2015, the interview was published on Saturday, October 21, 2017.

In the interview, she also talked about her preference in men and admitted that she compromised on them, as she got older.

She told her interviewer:

“I never wanted to date any artiste. On the day I lost my virginity, I called my manger, Janet to tell her and she was surprised that I was a very late starter. I also called my mum and she didn’t have any advice, she said, “it will be painful at first’, and I was there wondering what she was saying.

“I am ashamed to say I lost my virginity at 28, so don’t clap for me. Perhaps one of the reasons why I lost my virginity that late was because I was shy and somewhere else where I was too focused on my career that I didn’t even think about having sex.”

On allegations of lesbianism, she said:

“I sued someone for writing that I was a lesbian and I regret doing so. In hindsight I don’t think it was necessary but a lot of people nudged me to sue the writer.”

Consequently, Justice Mohammed Idris, in his judgment earlier today, demanded that the Nigeria Police Force release Evans’ brother-in-law unconditionally and award him N2m damages.

The judge declared Obiechina’s arrest and detention as constitutional, holding that the remand order which the police claimed to have obtained from a magistrates’ court was invalid.

Justice Idris further directed the police to tender a public apology to Obiechina to be published in two national dailies.

The judge had fixed today to deliver judgment in a fundamental rights enforcement suit filed by Obiechina.

Liberian Election: George Weah Storms Nigeria, Seeks God’s Face At TB Joshua’s Church

Featured Image

Retired footballer and leading presidential candidate in Liberia, George Weah, on Sunday, visited the Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN) in Ikotun, Lagos, Nigeria to seek the spiritual support of the founder of the church, TB Joshua.

It is understood that the prominent Liberian Senator attended the Church service in Lagos, yesterday to “seek God’s face” for his nation.

During his sermon which was broadcast live on popular Christian channel Emmanuel TV, Mr. Joshua warmly welcomed Mr. Weah and spoke directly to him.

“My brother is here today because he loves his country and wants God’s choice for his country,” Mr. Joshua said, adding that “He is not here to impose himself. What does God say about his country, Liberia? What is God’s opinion? That is why he is here.”

The cleric went further to reiterate that he was not favouring any particular side of the political spectrum but his own role was to pray for “the will of God” to be done in the nation of Liberia.

“We are not herbalists or witch-doctors; we are people of God. God’s choice is our choice. We cannot pray against God’s will,” Joshua stressed, while Weah nodding firmly in agreement.

The cleric continued: “Without God’s corresponding power, we cannot pray to Him. For every step we take – every movement and action – intimation comes first.”

“There must be a suggestion from the Spirit to move before we move. If truly I am a man of God, I must hear from God – move or don’t move.”

“God’s opinion is what we should seek in our country – simple! God is the Answer, the Final.”

The presidential run-off election between Weah and the country’s incumbent Vice President, Joseph Boakai, is scheduled to hold on November 7, 2017.

Philippe Coutinho Discusses Liverpool’s Defensive Failings Against Tottenham

Featured Image

Philippe Coutinho has told ESPN Brasil that the four goals his side conceded to Tottenham”could have been prevented.”

Harry Kane scored twice as Jurgen Klopp’s visitors suffered an afternoon to forget in defence, with Son Heung-Min and Dele Alli also on target amid further uncertainty at the back.

Philippe Coutinho said: “The goals were goals that could have been prevented.

“It started out wide and we end up conceding one of those goals the manager speaks about.

“He speaks a lot about this — we’ve conceded a lot of goals like this. And obviously in attack we were unable to score the goals necessary to draw or turn around the game.

“We were in the game during the first-half then the goal we conceded made everything worse.”

Liverpool have conceded 15 goals away from home, the most in the Premier League this season and three more than bottom club Crystal Palace.

But Coutinho said he believed the problem was “not just down to the defence, it’s the whole group.”

He added: “The first goal started in a wide position where everyone is involved in defending, not just the players right at the back.

“We have to improve this as quickly as possible in order to win games and fight more. With difficult games like this one, we know it’s these things that decide them.

“So we need to concentrate more to deal with balls like this.

“The first goal was scored after four minutes and the second one after 12 or 13. It’s difficult to play away from home against a strong team when you start like that.

“We have to work hard. Those passages of play, those set pieces from wide positions. We have to concentrate more to deal with them.”

Ronald Koeman Believes Everton Players Are Still Behind Him

Featured Image

Ronald Koeman feels the Everton players are behind him despite Sunday’s 5-2 defeat by Arsenal leaving them in the relegation zone.

Everton took the lead against the Gunners at Goodison Park, but succumbed after the break as Arsenal ran riot against a side lacking in confidence.

Everton have won just two of their first nine Premier League games, and despite questions surrounding the Dutchman’s future, Koeman says he feels the players believe in him.

He told Sky Sports: “That’s the feeling that I have [players back me] but I don’t know. With every manager working with 28-29 players you cannot work with all of them being happy but there’s still enough understanding. That’s my opinion but I don’t know.”

Everton withstood a huge amount of early Arsenal pressure before Wayne Rooney fired them ahead against the run of play in the 12th minute.

But Nacho Monreal and Mesut Ozil scored for the visitors either side of half-time and, after Idrissa Gueye was sent off for two yellow cards, Alexandre Lacazette and Aaron Ramsey also found the net.

Oumar Niasse took advantage of a defensive mix-up between Monreal and Petr Cech to grab a late consolation but there was still time for Alexis Sanchez to fire in a fifth for Arsenal.

Ronald Koeman felt Gueye’s 68th-minute sending-off proved to be the turning point in the game.

“The final result is really disappointing,” he added. “Until 1-2 we stayed in the game. I need to say that Arsenal were the better team with the better chances but still at 1-2 you can get one point out of it. The sending-off of Gueye made it really difficult.”
