Buhari Approves North-East Development Commission Bill

Featured Image

President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday assented to the North East Development Commission (Establishment) Bill, 2017.

This disclosure was made in a statement issued today by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters (Senate), Ita Enang.

The Act establishes the North-East Development Commission with the mandate to receive and manage funds allocated by the Federal Government and international donor agencies for the resettlement, rehabilitation, integration and reconstruction of roads, houses and business premises of victims of insurgency as well as tackling the menace of poverty and environmental challenges of the area.

“It provides for offices of Chairman, Managing Director, Executive Director (Administration and Finance), Executive Director (Humanitarian Affairs), Executive Director (Operations) and members representing the North East Zone to be rotated amongst member states of the commission,” he said.

“The commission will among other things coordinate projects and programmes within the Master Plan for the rehabilitation, resettlement, reconciliation, reconstruction and sustainable development of the North-East Zone.

“This will be done in the field of infrastructure, human and social services, including health and nutrition, education and water supply, agriculture, wealth creation and employment opportunities, urban and rural development and poverty alleviation.

“The commission will also liaise with federal ministries, departments, agencies, states and development partners on implementation of all measures approved in the Master Plan for stabilization and development of the North-East by the Federal Government.

“It will equally assess and report on any project being funded or carried out in the North-East by any federal ministry, department and agency or company that has an agreement with the Federal Government, and ensure that funds released for such projects are properly utilised.

“The commission will equally liaise with other stakeholders on tackling of humanitarian, ecological and environmental problems and degradation that arise from natural causes, insurgency and industrial activities in the North-East Zone.”

Mr. Enang further said the commission would seek humanitarian, human, material, technical and financial support from development partners, local or international, and Non-Governmental Organisations, with a view to developing the North-East region.

He pointed out that the commission was saddled with the responsibility of co-coordinating civil-military confidence building, stabilization measures and activities that lie within the civil-military interface especially before, during and after military and security operations.

He stressed that one other key role of the commission was to act as the focal point to coordinate and harmonise all other interventions programmes and initiatives that the federal government was involved with in the North-East.

The Senior Special Assistant said that the Act as assented to, had been communicated to appropriate authorities.

Former Borussia Dortmund coach Thomas Tuchel is now the favourite to become Bayern Munich’s new head coach when interim boss Jupp Heynckes steps down next summer. The 44-year-old, who has previously been touted as a replacement for Arsene Wenger at Arsenal, has been out of work since leaving Dortmund at the end of last season. Bayern are searching for a permanent successor after sacking Carlo Ancelotti earlier this month. (Sport Bild)

Schalke midfielder Amine Harit has revealed he turned down Bayern Munich to sign for the Gelsenkirchen-based side from Nantes in the summer. The 20-year-old said: “It is true that Bavaria wanted me. When big clubs call, you think ‘of course’. But you also ask yourself: ‘What is the best thing for my development?’ I came to the conclusion that Schalke and this project fit better with me.” (Sport Bild)

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has moved to quash rumours that Tottenham forward Harry Kane is on the club’s wanted list. The 24-year-old, who scored twice in Sunday’s 4-1 demolition of Liverpool, had been subject of Real Madrid transfer rumours following last week’s Champions League fixture at the Bernabeu. “I haven’t thought about signing Kane. We are happy with (Karim) Benzema and the rest of the team,” Perez said when asked about the prospect of a move for the England international. (Cadena COPE)

Former West Bromwich Albion coach Pepe Mel has been sacked by Deportivo La Coruna with the club floundering in 16th, two points above the relegation zone. B team coach Cristobal Parralo will oversee first-team affairs until a successor is found. (AS)

A debut goal from 22-year-old Jose Arnaiz helped Barcelona breeze past Real Murcia in the Copa del Rey on Tuesday night. Barca manager Ernesto Valverde was impressed with the winger’s contribution and hopes he will make an impact on the first team in the future. “I hope he will help us in the future,” Valverde said. “He is a savvy player, in the second half when the opponent opened up, he found his best positions. When he grabs the ball in front of goal, he knows what to do, I think this is his first step.” (Marca)

Internazionale centre-back Milan Skriniar only moved to San Siro in the summer after catching the eye at Sampdoria last term. But the 22-year-old has earned rave reviews in his first few months with the Nerazzurri and is now an Atletico Madrid transfer target. The Slovakia international has been identified by Atleti coach Diego Simeone as the man he needs to get back to the Atletico of old who were defensively resolute and incredibly hard to break down. Serie A has taken a bold step in fighting antisemitism by reading a passage from Anne Frank’s diary before fixtures this week following antisemitic acts from Lazio fans at last weekend’s fixture against Cagliari. Lazio supporters defaced the Stadio Olimpico with antisemitic graffiti and stickers of Frank wearing rivals Roma’s jersey. Lazio president Claudio Lotito visited a synagogue in Rome on Tuesday and 15 supporters have been identified as the culprits for the graffiti. (Il Giornale)

The future of Portuguese forward Andre Silva at Milan is in doubt. Signed from Porto for €38m (£34m) over the summer, the 21-year-old has yet to score in Serie A. He has, however, only made three league starts totalling 298 minutes for the Rossoneri. However, Milan are underwhelmed and with Arsenal transfer rumours on the back pages he could make a hasty exit. (Calciomercato)

Internazionale coach Luciano Spalletti was full of praise for his side after overcoming Sampdoria 3-2 on Tuesday evening to move top of Serie A. Speaking afterwards he said: “What effect does the top of the ranking stand for me? What excites me is the team’s behaviour. Tonight the team made a good performance and I’m happy, especially for them. They deserve this attention, because they are real professionals.” (Corriere dello Sport)

Juventus have scouts present at the U17 World Cup in India who have been impressed with Brazil forward Lincoln. The 16-year-old plays his club football for Flamengo and is also believed to be a Real Madrid and Manchester United transfer target. However, Juve are aware they could be priced out of a move for the forward – who has scored three times in five outings at the World Cup – after Vinicius Jnr. joined Real Madrid for €45m (£40m) at 17 despite making just a handful of appearances for Flamengo. After scoring a goal-of-the-season contender for Southampton to clinch a 1-0 win over West Brom at the weekend, Sofiane Boufal’s agent has revealed his client was a Fiorentina and Internazionale transfer target in the summer. “He feels good now, he’s just waiting to play more,” Yvan Le Mee said. “In August we had clubs like Inter, Fiorentina and Celta Vigo, who know what they’re doing when it comes to buying players, who all wanted to buy him at any cost.” (SFR Sport 1)

Sammer: Hasenhuttl Is Perfect For Bayern

Featured Image

Bayern Munich’s former sporting director, Matthias Sammer, believes that RB Leipzig manager Ralph Hasenhuttl has what it takes to lead Bayern Munich.

Hasenhuttl has emerged as one of the hottest talents to manage Bayern Munich and he has impressed with Ingolstadt and RB Leipzig.

The Austrian manager helped Ingolstadt get promoted to the Bundesliga and keep them there by finishing 11th.

Hasenhuttl then went on to manage RB Leipzig, securing promotion and helping them finish second behind Bayern.

RB Leipzig are impressing in Europe and are just two points behind the top of Bayern and Dortmund.

“Ralph has everything,” he told Eurosport . “He is collecting continental experience with Leipzig already, he and his team are in the top spots of Bundesliga, he integrated really well into the club and is making the next step.

“But give him time to improve and gather experience, so that we don’t put pressure on this great personality for something that might come too early [coaching Bayern Munich].

“His basic talent is extraordinary, and that is what makes him a perfect for Bayern, some time.

“I think that for Ralph, Leipzig will still be a great fit for many years to come. They have a clear idea and philosophy that work together with his thoughts. Plus, the experience that he gathers every year and in every single European game.

“That’s what makes him – and Leipzig might be angry about this – but that makes him a perfect fit to become Bayern coach or a coach of another great team. He’s got the potential, but he will need some time.”

Ben Woodburn Signs New Contract Extension With Liverpool

Featured Image

Ben Woodburn has committed his long-term future to Liverpool by signing a new contract.

Ben Woodburn signed the deal this afternoon after becoming the Reds’ youngest ever goalscorer when he netted in League Cup tie last year.

“It’s an unbelievable feeling to sign a new contract with Liverpool,” the 18-year-old told the club’s website.

“This is the club I want to stay at and be here as long as possible. When I was told, all I wanted to do was sign the contract.

“It feels good. Now I just want to carry on and hopefully show the manager what I can do.”

Jurgen Klopp believes Liverpool is the right place for Ben Woodburn to continue his development after the youngster signed a deserved contract extension at the club.

“This is brilliant news, although without sounding complacent about it, it is absolutely not a surprise,” the Liverpool boss said.

“Ben knows how committed we are to him and he and his family know this is the best environment for him to grow, learn more and become even better and better.

“What a talent this young man is. We don’t call him the Prince of Wales for nothing, although judging by his facial expression when we do he would probably be happy if we stopped with this!

“Ben is that perfect balance of talent and attitude. One of either is OK – to fulfil your potential at the very highest level you need to have the maximum of both.”

Kevin Gameiro Focused On Winning His Atletico Madrid Starting Place Back

Featured Image

Everton target Kevin Gameiro is prepared to fight for his place at Atletico Madrid.

Kevin Gameiro has fallen down the pecking order at the Spanish club and he has been linked with a move away in January.

“I am at a great club with lots of competition for places,” Gameiro told Diario AS.

“Everybody has to compete to earn a starting place at the club and I am not worried about that at this moment, I am not afraid.”

“Right now, I’m not at 100% and I need to work on this to make sure I am on top of my game, then I can think about myself and my importance.”

The striker is also quoted as saying that he won’t make any plans to leave unless Atletico spell it out for him.

“If they do not want me they have to say it clearly,” he said in what surely seems like a challenge to the club. So it’s now up to Diego Simeone and the powers that be at Atletico to let their player know whether he’s still wanted or not.

Leicester City Set To Name Claude Puel As New Manager

Featured Image

Claude Puel is in advanced negotiations to become the new manager of Leicester and could be appointed before Sunday’s game at home to Everton,

The former Southampton manager impressed vice-chairman Aiyawatt Shrivaddhanaprabha and Director of Football Jon Rudkin in a meeting away from the club on Monday, and another that took place yesterday.

We understand there is already broad agreement on the terms of his contract, but there are issues still to address in terms of legal matters and Puel’s backroom staff.
To that end, Leicester are determined to keep Michael Appleton as part of the new coaching staff – he’s impressed the hierarchy at the club since joining in June, and he’s re-inforced that with two wins from two games as caretaker manager.

We understand Claude Puel is prepared to work with Appleton going forward, so he is likely to stay on.

Claude Puel was let go by Southampton in June despite leading the club to an eighth-placed finish in the Premier League and the final of the Capital One Cup. Southampton flopped in the Europa League and decent domestic results were not deemed good enough to compensate for a style of play that many supporters decried as too defensive, and several players disliked his rotation policy.

Puel told French media he was let go “for a little bit more than sporting reasons”.

Manchester United Interested In Signing Valencia Midfielder Carlos Soler

Featured Image

Man Utd have opened talks with Valencia over the signing of £30m Carlos Soler, according to reports in the Sun.

The Spain U21 international midfielder, 20, is currently tied to the La Liga club until the summer of 2021.

Carlos Soler a £75m buy-out clause, though Los Che will likely negotiate for a lower fee.

Jose Mourinho is keen to add midfield cover after seeing his side deprived of their talisman Paul Pogba due to injury.

Soler has played a key role in Valencia’s red hot start to the season and featured in Saturday’s 4-0 win over Sevilla to keep them second, four points behind leaders Barcelona.

Speaking about his future earlier this year, Soler said: “That’s something that’s done by the club, by agents.

“When I go out on the pitch to play, I’m not thinking: ‘Wow, I’ve got a really high buy-out clause and I’ve got a lot of responsibility on my shoulders’.”

United are back in action on Saturday when Mourinho’s men host Tottenham in the Premier League.

Why Not Put Jonathan On The Ballot For 2019?

Why Not Put Jonathan On The Ballot For 2019? By Peter Claver Oparah

CLICK here to read more opinion articles

Since he was defeated in an epochal presidential election in March 2015, former President Goodluck Jonathan has refused to keep quiet. Known for his notorious flippancy and carefree tongue that has always been a source of embarrassment to himself, his party and his supporters, he has seized every opportunity to talk, even when such opportunities are better utilized keeping quiet. All his utterances since that defeat have been tailored towards telling us how good he was, how meritorious his regime was for us and how we ought to regret voting him out. Also, he had not wasted any time to tell of his graciousness in accepting defeat, though he does not tell us of any other option he would have taken in the light of the very many desperate but futile efforts he made to hang on to power. What else does a person defeated in an election do than hand over?

This piece was written by Peter Claver Oparah. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

Jonathan does not waste time in telling whoever takes his words serious how Nigerians should regret voting him out and how his regime outperformed the one that replaced him, headed by President Muhammadu Buhari. But in all his cheeky efforts, Jonathan betrays the mien of a man sorely pained and living in personal turmoil. Jonathan, in his several careless utterances shows he still bears the sores of his defeat and he believes that by talking often, he will live down that sore. He shows clearly a man that is so eager to write his report card and exonerate himself of the legions of unpardonable indiscretions, awful corruption, impunity, indescribable incompetence that all ganged up to see him off power. He emits clearly the symptoms of a troubled mind, not very comfortable with his deserved place in history but who neighs, one way or the other, to re-write history to give him a more favorable verdict than that which he rightly got for his six years in power. Is he not struggling in vain? Is he not indulging in the childish act of bolting the stable door after the horse has escaped? He clearly is and this is shown by the series of angry reactions Nigerians always give to his frequent efforts to bathe himself in adoring glee. With each effort to remake himself, Jonathan comes off worse which speaks of a clear personality deficit he has no inkling how to deal with. When golden silence would have done him tremendous good, Jonathan hurtles out with annoying outbursts full of gaffes, unfathomable errors and vacuous claims that fly in the face of the bumbling mediocrity he is largely perceived of by Nigerians.

Expectedly, Jonathan’s waning party, the PDP, faced with the massive uprising that threw it out of power, had tagged alongside him in this futile effort. As Jonathan’s gains were PDP’s gains, his travails are also theirs. His baggage is also theirs. So they are right to shore up his poor efforts at self-recreation. They are Siamese twins who complimented each other in the egregious misrule that hobbled this country and therefore should seek to strike a partnership with each other as they battle life outside power.

They have not stopped telling us of the glorious era of Jonathan, when life was so sweet, painless and easy. They have constantly jammed our eardrums with sonorous rendezvous of the garden of Eden which the last PDP government writ here for us, only to be rewarded with a shock rejection in 2015. They have not failed to tell us that we never had it so good and rosy as in the Jonathan era where everything was almost free, there was enough money for every Nigerian to the extent that there were tens of trillions of Naira to be stolen without any pain felt by the country, food was almost given out free to Nigerians, hunger and misery disappeared, jobs were everywhere for the picking, security of lives and properties were air tight, life was more abundant and the heavenly Jerusalem was brought down to Nigeria. If you listen to an average PDP and Jonathan apologist, you certainly will miss your way trying to figure out the Nigeria they talk about because the tragic Hobbesian empire they created still exerts unforgettable scars on the minds of Nigerians who are always hit with pangs of bitterness if they remember the horror PDP and Jonathan made here for the years they were in power.

But the subject of this discourse is not to excurse into Jonathan and PDP’s trajectory as Nigerians rightly did a referendum on that regime in March 2015. I am not writing this report to contest the fairy tales with which PDP and Jonathan want to distort the reality that saw them thrown down the dustbin just two years ago. I am not contesting PDP and Jonathan’s frequent efforts to mangle our sensibilities and loot our minds for another tortuous journey in self-dubiety. This report is not about joining issues with Jonathan and his PDP in their self-delusional hope that they will re-build a cracked egg shell. It is not an effort to pore into their cocoon of belief that Nigerians are dolts who can be easily swayed by the kind of puerile white washing and fantasy-tale they are doing today.

It is obvious even to PDP and Jonathan that they are lying to themselves and Nigerians when they ceaselessly tout their achievements in power.  It is obvious even as they mischievously believe it, that they are aware of the gash their steeling and looting of a huge oil boom inflicted on the country today. It is obvious even if they deny it, that these philistines know very well that President Buhari and his government are doing their utmost best to contain the negative fallout of the brigandage they unleashed here before they were booted out of power. They are aware that they are duping themselves (not Nigerians) by noisily singing their praises.

My concern is that a party that once governed Nigeria is still burying its head in the sand. My concern is that PDP and Jonathan are furiously romancing their thighs and believe they can get pregnant from that silly effort. You may wonder why I have these concerns? It is not for the interest of PDP which, each day, is hit by cases of desertion from its emptying core. If you doubt the sorry state of PDP, ask Doyin Okupe who wrote off his once-darling party as a tree than no longer bear fruits. Ask PDP former National Chairman, Ahmadu Ali, who had advised his party to stop hallucinating about 2019, as they can never win the presidency in 2019. Ask Governor Seriake Dickson of Jonathan’s Baylesa State who had told his party that it is impossible for PDP to win the 2019 presidential election. Ask Ibrahim Mantu who recently asked his party to go on its knees and tender unreserved apology to Nigerians for its sins as a way of seeking reinvention. Ask Ifeanyi Ubah who recently said that PDP is still digging its grave. Ask former Head of State Abdulsalami Abubakar who expressed the worry that PDP is not offering any meaningful opposition to the ruling APC.

But my point in proving the self-elected dubiety of the PDP on its achievements during its years in power, especially during the Jonathan years, is that presently, the rank and file of what remains in PDP, including Jonathan are crisscrossing the country, begging different people to fly its presidential ticket in 2019, the year they have noisily boasted they will take back power. They are now traversing the north and romancing several people to take their presidential ticket in 2019 with no luck. They even offered same to foremost businessman Aliko Dangote, who retorted that he is not a politician and even if he were, he can never ever seek to fly the presidential flag of the PDP against President Buhari. It is so bad for PDP! However, such public scorn has not deterred PDP and Jonathan from foraging for newer grounds in seeking someone that will take their presidential ticket in 2019 and you wonder what informed their vacuous boast of unseating Buhari when they are finding it hard to have a candidate to stand against Buhari?.

In the face of this public humiliation and given PDP’s insistence that the last regime turned Nigeria into an Eldorado under Jonathan, and that Nigerians have regretted replacing Jonathan with Buhari, why are they not tapping that golden opportunity by drafting Jonathan to contest against Buhari in 2019? Why have they turned nomads in the elusive search for a credible 2019 presidential candidate when they have a ready-made achiever in Jonathan? Why are they not putting Jonathan on the ballot so that Nigerian who have regretted voting for Buhari against Jonathan in 2015 can rectify their mistakes and bring Jonathan and PDP back to power? Why is the PDP wasting its efforts to search for an elusive candidate to beat Buhari in 2019 when they have a ready-made candidate in a Jonathan that was a super hero when he was here for nearly six years? Why is PDP not taking the Jonathan option but have been touting his regime as the best gift God deigned Nigeria after pure water?

Your wonder widens when you observe that Jonathan himself is also involved in this scavenging when he knows that nothing stops him from putting himself on the ballot for Nigerians to do a clear referendum on him against Buhari as he pretends not to know his rightful place in the history of the country. Jonathan contested as a sitting president and lost in 2015 so he is viable to stand for election again, so why is PDP not putting him up to snatch the seat from Buhari n 2019, knowing how well he performed before he was mistakenly voted out? Who is playing tricks on himself? Who wants to dupe himself?

However, PDP will prove those that posit that it plays pranks on itself right if they continue to market the horrendous travesty of Jonathan’s regime as a better option for Nigerians yet refuse to put Jonathan on its 2019 ticket. Nothing prevents Jonathan from contesting the 2019 election, so the best way for him and his sagging party to test their stand amongst Nigerians is to be put in the ballot in 2019 so that Nigerians will have that historical opportunity to rectify the mistake PDP and Jonathan said Nigerians did in rejecting them in 2015. PDP must quit its pranks. Jonathan must quit his well-known penchant to play the ostrich and enter the ring for the 2019 contest if they really believe in their jeremiad that Nigerians regret voting them out or that they performed creditably even to their own personal judgment. Nothing more than this is required if PDP and Jonathan are not conveniently lying to themselves to con Nigerians into embarking on another perilous journey we had when they were steering the Nigerian ship to perdition. So enough of this enfoolment. Let PDP re-present the Jonathan ticket for 2019, if they sincerely believe that they did well when he was here or keep quiet, apologize to Nigerians for the Jonathan/PDP tragedy and do large-scale reforms on the party before even presenting themselves as alternatives to what we have at present.

Fresh ASUU Strike Looms In Nigerian Universities As Oct. 31st Deadline Nears

Featured Image

There are very strong indications that the lecturers of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) are “warming up” for another round of industrial action as the countdown to the deadline for the implementation of agreements reached with the federal government – which led to the conditional suspension of its indefinite strike action in September – draws near.

In September, the federal government had signed an agreement with the leadership of the union, as a result of the strike action embarked upon by the union to press the implementation of the memorandum of understanding entered into between both parties in 2013 as well as the 2009 agreement.

During the signing of the agreement, a timeline of October 2017 was reached between both parties for the implementation of some components of the agreement, especially the payment of shortfall in salaries and Earned Academic Allowances.

However, with less than a week to the end of the October timeline, some lecturers have told The Nation that the government has not implemented any aspect of the agreement, even when they claimed during negotiation that implementation has commenced.

A lecturer said: “The government has not done anything. We have not heard from them and it is just one week to the end of the October deadline. I can assure you that we are warming up and there is the possibility that from November 1, we will resume the suspended action.”

“They (government) told our leaders during negotiations that they have prepared everything for the implementation. They were even brandishing some papers, especially on the earned Academic Allowance. But we have not seen anything nor heard from them.”

“They were also supposed to carry our verification because of those who employed workers without permission so that the issue of shortfall in salary can be addressed. Many of us have been verified, but nothing has happened. We have not been paid. They should not take us die a ride because when we resume the suspension action not are not going to listen to any discussion.”

On his part, ASUU President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, refused to divulge whether or not the union will call out its members at the end of October if they are not satisfied with the level of implementation of the agreement.

He told the news outlet that: “We are engaging them and we are making some few progress and we hope they will keep their promise. Otherwise, our members are ready to activate their action. We are still in October, but we are on our guard.

“We believe they will follow the process through and implement it fully. That is why we still engage them and we are talking. We are working with them and we hope they will continue to cooperate.”

Asked whether they will embark on any Industrial action at the end of October, he said:

“I cannot say whether there will be any action at the end of October or not. It is what our members say that we shall do. I hope I am very clear? Our members shall determine what we shall do at the end of the deadline based on the level, of implementation”.

Prisoners To Exercise Voting Right In 2019 Elections – INEC

Featured Image

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has disclosed that plans are already underway to ensure that prison inmates can start exercising their voting right in the forthcoming 2019 general elections.

As a result of this, the electoral body is making arrangements with prison authorities on the possibility of creating polling units in Nigerian prisons to allow some categories of inmates vote.

INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, made this known on Tuesday in Abuja at a dialogue session tagged Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room Dialogue.

He, however, maintained that only “certain categories of prisoners” would be given such an opportunity depending on the nature of the crimes committed.

His words: “We have already engaged the Comptroller-General of Prisons and we have statistics on the number of prisoners nationwide and the number of inmates registered.”

“We are looking at the possibility of creating polling units in the prisons and to enable some categories of prisoners to vote.

“Ghana does it but there are some categories of prisoners who by the nature of crimes committed lose the right to vote. Whatever we can do to open up the process to ensure that as much as possible Nigerians are given the opportunity to vote, will be done.”

The development is coming three years after a Federal High Court in Benin, Edo State, had held that prisoners in Nigeria have the right to vote in all elections conducted in the country.

President Muhamadu Buhari on Tuesday advised member countries of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to tread carefully in pushing for same currency for the sub-region by 2020.

Speaking at the fourth meeting of the presidential task force on the ECOWAS currency programme in Niamey, Niger Republic, Nigeria’s supreme leader cited the challenges faced by the European Union in realising the same goal to buttress his position.

He further said the necessary economic fundamentals among countries continue to differ over the years, making it more difficult to pull through with the project by 2020.

Buhari also urged that the ECOWAS should proceed cautiously with the integration agenda, taking into consideration the above concerns and the lessons currently unfolding in the European Union (EU).

A statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, read:

“Nigeria advises that we proceed cautiously with the integration agenda, taking into consideration the above concerns and the lessons currently unfolding in the European Union.

“To that end, Nigeria will caution against any position that pushes for a fast-track approach to a monetary union, while neglecting fundamentals and other pertinent issues,” the President was quoted as saying.

Buhari noted that some of the obstacles to realising the road map for the implementation of a single currency included diverse and uncertain macro-economic fundamentals of many countries; unrealistic inflation targeting based on flexible exchange rate regime; and inconsistency with the African Monetary Cooperation Programme.

The President said domestic issues in ECOWAS member countries relating to their constitutions and dependence on aids had continued to affect the framework for implementing the single currency in the sub-region

He said, “Although the ECOWAS Commission has anchored its pursuit of the new impetus to monetary integration on the information presented to the heads of state, which were the basis for their recommendations, we are concerned that we have not properly articulated and analysed a comprehensive picture of the state of preparedness of individual countries for monetary integration in ECOWAS by 2020.

“In previous meetings, we had specifically raised observations on the state of preparedness of the member states, the credibility of the union if anchored on watered down criteria, and the continuing disparities between macroeconomic conditions in ECOWAS countries, amongst others. And I would like to reiterate this concern.”

The President told the heads of state that the conditions that pushed Nigeria into withdrawing from the process in the past had not changed.

“Nigeria had earlier withdrawn from the process because its key questions and concerns were ignored and till date, none of the issues has come up as an agenda issue to be considered by the taskforce.

“Consequently, the road map which did not involve widespread consultation with national stakeholders is not sufficiently inclusive,” he added.

In his remarks, the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Marcel Alain de Souza, said the single currency for the West African sub-region was a laudable and historical project, but regretted that it had taken too long to be actualised.

Alain de Souza, who said the creation of a central bank for the West Coast would accelerate the process, noted that Nigeria constitutes more than 70 per cent of the GDP of the West African region, with a population of 180 million, and would play a significant role in facilitating the process of realising a single currency for the sub-region.

[BREAKING] Metuh’s Trial: Jonathan, Dasuki Fail To Appear In Court

Featured Image

A former President of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan, and his National Security Adviser (NSA), Sambo Dasuki, were on Tuesday ordered to appear before Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court, Abuja.

But as of the commencement of Wednesday hearing in the trial of a former National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, Olisa Metuh, reports reaching us indicated that the ex-president and the detained ex-NSA were not in court during hearing.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan Ordered To Appear In Court

It was gathered that Jonathan’s absence from court may not be unconnected to the inability of the court bailiff to serve him with the court’s subpoena on Tuesday.

This is just as the Department of State Service (DSS) in whose custody Dasuki is detained has yet to produce the ex-NSA in court.

The trial judge, Justice Abang had announced in court on Tuesday that he had, on Monday, issued a subpoena to be served on Jonathan.

This is after Metuh had on Monday sought that the court summon the former President as a witness to testify in the case filed against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over alleged N400 million fraud.

Justice Abang subsequently said: “Indeed, at the close of business, yesterday (Monday) being October 23, 2017, precisely at about 3.59 pm, the registrar forwarded to the court in chamber a subpoena to compel former President Goodluck Jonathan to appear in court to testify at the instance of the first defendant (Metuh).”

Guardiola Slams Carabao Cup Ball

Featured Image

Pep Guardiola has labelled the match ball used in the Carabao Cup as unacceptable, after his side needed penalties to overcome Wolves.

Manchester City, who are currently sweeping through the Premier League could not score a goal against Wolves, over 120 minutes, winning 4-1 on penalties.

However, Guardiola has slammed the ball used in the League Cup, taking concern with the Mitre ball used.

“It is not acceptable. The ball was unacceptable for a high-level competition,” the Spaniard said.

“It is too light, it moves all over the place, it is not a good ball. It is impossible to score with a ball like that and I can say that because we won, I’m not making excuses.

“All of my players said, ‘What is that?’ I’m sorry [but the] Carabao Cup is not a serious ball for a serious competition.

“It’s [for] marketing, money, OK but it’s not acceptable – [it has] no weight, nothing.”

Guardiola Lauds Bravo’s Heroics

Featured Image

Pep Guardiola has heaped praise on goalie, Claudio Bravo for his heroics against Wolves, as they made it to the quarterfinals.

Manchester City could not break down Wolves over 120 minutes, as the match ended goalless after extra time.

Bravo proved to be the hero on penalties, saving two spotkicks, as City won 4-1 after extra time.

“Claudio helped us to qualify for the next round,” Guardiola told Sky Sports.

“You analyse how many chances we had and how many they had and we had more, but in the special moments Claudio was outstanding.

“I don’t know [if it was his best game for City] but of course he was so determined in terms of their one against ones with the goalkeeper, and then to save two penalties – so he is the man of the match by far.

“It is good for us, it is important to continue in that competition. It is a special competition for many reasons. We played with determination.”

Guardiola added: “Claudio gave us the chance to go through, I’m so happy for him, the way he trains, he made a good performance.

“Last season was not easy for him, but he is a goalkeeper of a high level – he deserved that performance.”

Bosz Impressed With Isak

Featured Image

Dortmund manager, Peter Bosz says he is quite impressed with how Alexander Isak grabbed his chance in the DFB-Pokal thrashing of Magdeborg.

The 18-year-old Isak stepped up to the plate in the 5-0 thrashing of Magdeburg, scoring his first goal for the club and an assist.

And Bosz was quite impressed with the performance of the young forward and has urged him to take his chances whenever he is given.

“Alex works hard in training,” he told a news conference.

“He has Auba above him in the pecking order, so it’s not easy for him. When he gets the chance, he needs to take it. He did so today.”

“I’m very satisfied with the result. Winning 5-0 in Magdeburg is a good result,” Bosz said.

“We knew that it wouldn’t be easy, because Magdeburg attack with pace. Going 1-0 up before half-time and 2-0 up directly after the break helped us a lot.

“After that we played some good football.”
