Joshua Plans To Dominate For A Decade

Featured Image

Anthony Joshua hopes to remain the face of heavyweight boxing for the next decade, as he prepares for his title fight against Takam.

The undefeated British boxer will face Takam in front of 78,000 fans at the Cardiff stadium on Saturday.

And Joshua believes that the key to staying at the top of heavyweight boxing, is by maintaining a dedicated approach.

“I can’t be perfect. I am who I am,” Joshua told Sky Sports News. “I have managed to become heavyweight champion of the world and who I am, I can present myself as the person I am today, with a project and vision of improving myself for the future.

“Providing I stay disciplined in my sport, you’ll hear of me for the next 10 years, and I’ll definitely progress as a person, and that’s what it’s about.

“This isn’t who I am today. I may make a mistake, but I’ll correct it in the future, and that’s what being a champion is about. If life was perfect and simple, people wouldn’t be able to relate to me.”

“With his style and his strength, I wish I came in heavier, so we could just stand there and slug it out with each other,” said Joshua.

“His punches are going to be ricocheting through my body, so the bigger you are, the stronger you are, but why I came in lighter, I thought I was fighting Pulev, a real amateur style boxer. Jab with him and match his speed.

“This is a completely different style of fighter, so maybe I might have come in a bit heavier if I knew I was fighting Takam. But nevertheless we are here, I’m looking at myself in the best condition I am, and I’ll put on the best performance in this condition I am.”

Buhari To Present 2018 Budget To NASS On Tuesday As FEC Approves Estimates

Featured Image

Reports have emerged that President Muhammadu Buhari will present the 2018 Appropriation Bill to the National Assembly on Tuesday, after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) approved the draft budget estimates today.

A source, who spoke authoritatively with ThisDay, said the bill is heading to the legislature early to give legislators ample time to deliberate on and pass in good time for its implementation to begin on January 1, 2018.

“Arrangements have been made for President Buhari to lay the budget on Tuesday,” the source said, adding: “It is our hope that the National Assembly would expedite action on it and get it ready for presidential assent by December 2017.”

The Minister of Budget and National Planning, Senator Udoma Udo Udoma, had at the end of FEC meeting at the presidential villa, Abuja told State House correspondents that the Council will liaise with the National Assembly to determine when the president will submit the draft estimates for the consideration of the two chambers.

Mr. Udoma, however, declined to comment on the details of the approved budget, saying the Nigerian constitution only allows the president to give out the details and he will do so when the National Assembly is ready to receive the draft.

The presidency had yesterday on its Twitter handle, @NGRPresident, tweeted the shift of the FEC meeting to today and explained that the sole agenda would be 2018 Budget.

“Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting will hold tomorrow (today), Thursday, October 26. Agenda is #Budget 2018, which is currently being finalised,” the tweet read.

From Maikanti To Maina: What Next?

From Maikanti To Maina: What Next?, By Azu Ishiekwene

CLICK here to read more opinion articles

It’s one of the ironies of the times that those getting the worst deal from retirement savings are the most vulnerable – the people that the scheme is supposed to help.

Stories about pensioners dying in long, waiting lines have moved from front pages to obscure spots, yet we’re often confronted with news of incredible stealing by public officials managing pension savings.

This piece was written by Azu Ishiekwene. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

After months in hiding, former chairman of the Presidential Pension Reform Task Force, Abdulrasheed Maina, returned to the crime scene, hoping that we would have moved on from the allegation that he pocketed N2 billion from the fund.

Maina was an assistant director, Works, Customs, Immigration and Prisons in the Pensions Office when former head of service, Stephen Oronsaye, recommended him to former President Goodluck Jonathan for a job.

ALSO READ: Buhari Sacks Ex-Pension Boss Abdulrasheed Maina, Queries Head Of Service

Highly connected, Maina is the grandson of Mai Ali Dogo, the Emir of Biu (1920-1935) and his late father, Abdullahi Aliyu Biu, was an ambassador to Mali. But these were not qualifications for the pension job, which was clearly beyond him.

Asking Maina to head an inter-agency team on pension reform, which comprised senior officials from at least five other agencies – and whose job was to straighten out the pension system – was like inviting a carpenter to perform tooth-extraction.

So, this carpenter came with his chisel and hammer to finish the bloody job that charlatans before him had started.

Maina had no business going near the pension fund and if his appointers had bothered to look, they would have found enough wreckage in his own life to warn them.

As an assistant director – the lowest rung in the directorate in the Federal Civil Service – he was heading a small unit, under the supervision of at least two other cadres of directors.

He was on a salary of between N150,000 and N200,000 monthly; and even if he added every naira from his side hustle, the best he would have hoped for was a small apartment in the suburbs of Abuja and a neat tokunbo car.

But that would have been another Maina. Abdulrasheed Maina still managed to live the life, apparently, from the sweat of pensioners pining away from unpaid entitlements.

This Maina, a third league director, paid $2 million cash to buy a house in Abuja. And it has now come to light that the $2 million property was only one in his collection of houses. As a fugitive, he escaped, not to his village in Biu, but to Dubai – that haven of princes – where he stayed for many months, plotting his triumphant return.

When he assumed office on a 30-month appointment to sort out the perennial pension mess, one of the major contracts awarded was for the emplacement of a biometrics system to cater for the estimated seven million plus registered pensioners, whose savings have been raided over the years in the name of “ghost workers”.

Maina actually claimed that he substantially cleaned up the system and exorcised the ghosts. He claimed that his committee recovered over N280 billion for the government, which was handed over to former finance minister, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, who in turn handed it over to former CBN governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi for the treasury.

He claimed that he blocked loopholes in police pension, which had allowed officers to cream off N1 billion monthly and he actually carries around a hefty cheque stub to prove his claim.

He insists that he is, alas, the innocent victim of vested interests, including politicians, led by former Senate president, David Mark, who waylaid him in the National Assembly, demanding his head on a saucer.

His story hardly passes the smell test, not because it may not contain grains of truth, but because his own lips are shimmering with oil from the spoils. The unnamed persons he is pointing at are not blameless; but while he is pointing one finger at them, four are pointing back at him. It’s a case of who got a bigger share of the pension pie.

I’m surprised that President Muhammadu Buhari’s special assistant on prosecution, Okoi Obono-Obla, an otherwise reasonable man, is talking as if Nigeria owes Maina an apology for the expose by PREMIUM TIMES that led to Maina’s removal this week.

If the government was not ashamed to reappoint a man on the EFCC’s wanted list, pay him salary arrears and move to promote him again, because he has not been convicted of any crime, we may as well ask Diezani Allison-Madueke to return and help tidy up the mess in the NNPC.

This is one shambles too many.

To be sure, pension asset have grown over the years, especially since the Pension Reform Act of 2004, which widened the pension net, expanded the market and established better regulation. Pension asset have also increased by over three-fold since 2009 to nearly N7 trillion, with over N480 billion invested by fund administrators.

But the gains have been in spite of multiple scandals in public sector pensions, and the growing misery among public sector pensioners at federal and state levels. Virtually all those who were supposed to ease their pain have ripped them off. A labour union president, one Ali Abatcha, even faced a trial over a N2.7 billion pension fraud.

In 2013, a former director of Pensions Account in the office of the Head of Service was accused of offering a Senate committee chairman at the time N1 billion to look the other way in a pension scandal being investigated by the EFCC.

The investigation followed reports that civil servants had, over the years, creamed off N159 billion from the pension fund.

That was not all. In a ruling that showed that forlorn pensioners were still on a long way to hope, an Abuja court sentenced one of six federal officials accused of making away with N33 billion of police pension fund to two years in prison, with the option of a N250,000 fine.

This scandalous ruling was, among other things, also a parable to Maina at the time of his appointment that he, too, could game the system and get away with a light touch. Yet, his restoration through the backdoor was more than he could have bargained for.

He’s been complaining since his removal, threatening to name names and to tell all. That is precisely what we need: to get Maina to tell us the full story about how an assignment to reform the administration of pension turned into a personal gold mine.

Buhari’s government of change cannot stop with removing Maina. With comparisons between Buhari and his predecessor, Jonathan, becoming worryingly shrill, failing to follow through quickly on the outcome of the presidential investigation into Maina’s second coming, can only further damage his government’s reputation.

It was, to say the least, shocking that the attorney general of the federation and minister of justice, Abubakar Malami, and the minister for interior, Abdulraham Dambazau, whose offices should have raised the flag, actually held the system at gunpoint to reinstate Maina, while the head of service and custodian of the rules, acted as a willing accomplice.

Coming one week after the face-off between the minister of state for petroleum resources, Ibe Kachikwu, and the GMD of NNPC, Maikanti Baru, on the ugly state of affairs at the NNPC, the Maina expose is another test of the vital signs of Buhari’s government.

Taking out Maina and letting the kingpins go unpunished will not only embolden others; it will give the dangerous impression that the anti-corruption war is finally on life-support.

And just after the head scratching on the Kachikwu-Baru saga, and lingering questions about Babachir Lawal and the delay in the release of the findings on the $43 million Ikoyi money, Buhari will struggle to convince the public that the heart of his anti-corruption war is still beating.

Speed kills but in the increasingly perilous highway of Buhari’s cabinet, delay kills even faster.

Theo Walcott Still Wanted At Arsenal – Arsene Wenger

Featured Image

Theo Walcott is still wanted at Arsenal and will get a chance in the Premier League, says Arsene Wenger.

Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright this week told The Debate he believes it is time for Walcott to leave the club after becoming marginalised from the first-team setup.

Walcott, 28, has played just 48 minutes of Premier League football so far this season, but the Arsenal boss insisted the England forward will be given more first-team opportunities.

“I do not want Theo to move on,” Wenger said, after revealing he has no fresh injury concerns ahead of facing Swansea this weekend. “When you look at the number of minutes these guys have played it’s quite a big number.

“His time in the Premier League will come. I’ve gone into a rotation policy because we play Thursday, Sunday most of the time so at the moment he has got less minutes in the Premier League than other competitions.”

FIFA Clear Juventus Of Wrongdoing Over Paul Pogba Transfer

Featured Image

Juventus have been cleared of any wrongdoing over Paul Pogba’s big-money transfer to Manchester United.

FIFA announced in May that it was investigating the then world-record £89.3m, plus add-ons, move that sealed the France international’s return to Old Trafford.

The world governing body cleared United in June but opened proceedings against Juventus, with claims the Serie A side’s arrangement with agent Mino Raiola could have breached third-party ownership rules.

However, FIFA has now confirmed no action will be taken

In an interview with Press Association Sport, a FIFA spokesman said: “The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has decided to dismiss all charges against the club Juventus FC for the apparent infringements of the Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players (RSTP) in the frame of the transfer of the player Paul Labile Pogba given that the evidence available was not sufficient to establish to the appropriate standard of proof, that art. 18ter of the RSTP had been breached.

“The Disciplinary Committee nevertheless underlined the importance of always preserving the independence of clubs and players in recruitment and transfer-related matters in order to ensure the integrity of matches and competitions.”

Ronald Koeman Speaks On The Effects Of Not Being Able To Sign Olivier Giroud At Everton

Featured Image

Recently sacked Everton manager Ronald Koeman says that the seeds for his departure were sown when Arsenal forward Olivier Giroud decided against a move to Goodison Park.

Olivier Giroud was seen as a player who could compensate for the loss of Romelu Lukaku and Koeman thinks the failure to adequately replace the Belgian forward, combined with a tough fixture list, sealed his fate.

“I had Olivier Giroud in the building,” Koeman told Dutch football magazine VI.

“He would have fitted perfectly but, at the very last moment, he decided that he’d rather live in London and stay at Arsenal.

“That was really hard to swallow. You tell me, where you can get a better striker?

Everton sold Romelu Lukaku, their leading scorer for the past four seasons, to Manchester United in July in a deal worth an initial £75m.

“Lukaku was important to us, not only because of his goals, but because of his way of playing – strong, quick, direct,” said Koeman.

“There was always the option of the long ball to him. Now we missed such a player, we had Nicola Vlasic and Wayne Rooney, players who want the ball in to feet.”

Despite spending around £140m in the summer, Everton won only two of their first eight Premier League games to sit in the relegation zone.

A tough run of fixtures to start the season didn’t help, with matches against five teams who finished above them in the 2016-17 season.

“I was on holiday when I received the Premier League fixture list by e-mail,” Koeman said.

“I looked at it and saw that five of our first nine games would be against clubs from last season’s top six: Chelsea, Tottenham, Man City, Man United and Arsenal.

“I looked at it again and I said to myself, ‘Phew! That is not going to be an easy run, in particular with a Europa League run at the same time’. And, most of all, because I had lost my striker Lukaku.”

Lukaku has netted seven Premier League goals for Manchester United this season, one behind top scorer, Harry Kane of Tottenham.

Real Madrid Came Close To Signing Edinson Cavani In 2007

Featured Image

Edinson Cavani came close to joining Real back in 2007, according to the player’s agent.

Cavani has been one of Europe’s top forwards over the past few seasons, having enjoyed prolific campaigns at Napoli and PSG.

However, he could have made his mark in Europe with Real Madrid, with his agent Alexis Papasan revealing that the Uruguay ace nearly joined the Spanish champions from Danubio back in January 2007.

“When I got off the plane, I received a call from Michel, the coach of [Real Madrid’s] reserve team Castilla at the time,” wrote Papasan in his soon-to-be-released biography.

“He said: ‘Do you think Cavani can start with Castilla and in six months fully integrate into Real Madrid? I love him so much’.”
In the end, Madrid opted against signing Cavani and snapped up Gonzalo Higuain instead.

The Ogun State Government, in partnership with the Federal Government, has unveiled plans to immortalise the prominent Afrobeat legend, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, as it has officially converted his ancestral home in Abeokuta, Ogun State capital into a museum.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, made this known on Wednesday when he visited the house located  on NEPA Road, Isabo, Abeokuta, in company with Governor Ibikunle Amosun.

Lai Mohammed said that the initiative will be known as the Heritage Museum, adding that it will be an inspiration to the youth.

He said, “It is laudable in the sense that this is one of the most positive steps to actually put our rhetorics into action.

“We have always said that one of the important assets we have is our cultural heritage, our history and this project, which is going to immortalise the Ransome-Kuti family, is laudable and admirable.

“The family, as you know, represent different things to different people, whether you talk about education, emancipation, music or entertainment.

“Therefore, this attempt by the government at immortalising the family by preserving and restoring the ancestral home is very commendable.

“This is the period we are celebrating the 20th anniversary of the death of the maestro himself and I am sure this is within time, as the museum will be inaugurated very soon, probably next year.

“The emphasis of this government, whether state or federal, is that the creative industry must be turned into creative economy and this Centre is going to be a good model to encourage and inspire the youth.”

The family house, which had been abandoned for long, was wearing a new look yesterday due to the commencement of the renovation on the dilapidated twin-building.

Shekarau Writes PDP, Declares Intention To Run For 2019 Presidential Election

Featured Image

An erstwhile Minister of Education, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, has written the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and various stakeholders, informing them of his intention to contest for the presidency in 2019.

His spokesperson, Malam Sule Ya’u Sule, who confirmed the development to newsmen on Wednesday, said Shekarau, who is also a former Governor of Kano State, had already sent notification letters to the PDP and all relevant stakeholders.

The party’s spokesperson Dayo Adeyeye, in a text message this morning confirmed that the party received Shekarau’s letter of interest.

Mr. Sule said Mr. Shekarau has also communicated his political ambition to various elders, community leaders, opinion leaders, political associates and religious leaders regardless of their ethnic and party affiliations.

“Malam Shekarau deliberately refused to make his ambition public because he does not want the relevant stakeholders to read it for the first time on the pages of newspapers. He first notified them before making it public. He is now making necessary consultations,” he said.

In a letter which he was said to have personally signed and sent to one of his political associates, Hassan Indabawa, dated August 22, 2017, Mr. Shekarau said after the 2015 general elections, there had been requests by individuals and groups from different quarters urging him to contest for the presidency in 2019.

Some days ago, a former Governor of Jigawa State, Alhaji Sule Lamido, also sent a letter of notification to PDP leaders and members on his readiness to run for presidency in 2019.

This is even as the Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, had last month publicly declared his ambition to seek the ticket, knowing well that the PDP has zoned its presidential ticket to the Northern region of Nigeria.

Senate Wants Some Federal Agencies Scrapped

Featured Image

The lawmakers of the senate on Wednesday advocated for the scrapping of some federal agencies over revenue leakages of over N2trillion between 2012 to 2016.

The suggestion was made during the consideration of the interim report of the Senate Ad-hoc committee on Alleged Misuse, under remittance, and other fraudulent activities in collection, accounting, remittance and expenditure of IGR by revenue generating agencies.

Senator Ben Murray-Bruce (PDP Bayelsa), who led the call, said some federal agencies should be scrapped to reduce the country’s expenditure.

Daily Trust quoted him as saying that the Voice of Nigeria (VON) – which was created during the era of cold war between the western and eastern blocs – has lost its relevance.

“The Federal Radio Corporation (FRCN) which made N1.2bn under remittance out of N7bn generated going by this report needs just about 2,000 efficient workforce as against the over bloated 8,000 workforce it presently parades,” he added.

Lending voice on the matter, Senator Tayo Alasoadura (APC, Ondo), said the country’s 601 Federal Government agencies were over bloated.

On his part, the Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu said: “We have too many agencies. Some of them are conflicting with each other while some are not doing anything.”

In his remark, Senate President Bukola Saraki urged the committee to look at all the issues raised.

It was learnt that the legislators at the upper chamber of the National Assembly had exposed the failure of Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to remit about 2 trillion naira into federal government coffers.

This revelation was brought to light by the Senate Committee on Public Accounts led by Senator Mathew Urhoghide (Edo South).

Speaking with National Assembly Reporters after Wednesday’s plenary session, Senator Urhoghide said, information from the Office of the Auditor-General of the Federation shows that all Federal Government Statutory Corporations, Commissions, Authorities and Agencies are not up to date with the submission of their annual accounts.

The Public Accounts Committee also threatened that it would soon commence the publication of defaulting agencies using the mass media.
