Salford City Goalkeeper Max Crocombe Given A Red Card For Urinating On The Pitch

Featured Image

National League North side, Salford City registered a 2-1 away win over Bradford Park Avenue , but only did so after ending up with 10 men on the field.

Edging ever closer to victory as the game entered its final stages, Salford were rocked when goalkeeper Max Crocombe was shown a straight red card in the 88th minute.

The incident happened quickly and off the ball, leaving Salford’s puzzled Twitter correspondent unable to shed much light on the situation.

Fortunately, it soon emerged that Bradford Park Avenue’s social media representative had been afforded a much better view.

It would appear that Crocombe received his marching orders from the officials on duty after getting caught a little short in the closing stages.

We Must Remain Realistic About Our Chances Of Catching Manchester City – Antonio Conte

Featured Image

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte admitted that they must be “realistic” about their place in the Premier League title race after Eden Hazard’s goal secured a 1-0 win over Bournemouth at the Vitality stadium

Eden Hazard netted his first Premier League goal of the season in the 51st minute to give Chelsea a deserved win at the Vitality Stadium, ensuring they remain nine points behind rampant leaders Manchester City after 10 matches.

“At this moment we must be realistic by going game by game,” Conte said when asked if Chelsea are aiming for a top-four finish rather than retaining their title.

“We have 19 points and we deserve to have 19 points. We are first in our group in the Champions League. We went into the next round of the Carabao Cup after going out in the second round last season.

“This group [of players]… I’m very happy for this group. There are players who are very honest, players who want to fight until the end for something important. Are we able to do this? I don’t know. But we will try to stay there.

“I know very well that in England, in this league, there are six top teams. Four go into the Champions League. Two have to stay out and play Europa League. Last season we saw this. It was very, very, very difficult.”

Daniel Sturridge Happy To Reach Landmark Career Goals

Featured Image

Daniel Sturridge has revealed his delight after reaching 100 club career goals in Liverpool’s 3-0 win over Huddersfield.

Daniel Sturridge scored his team’s first of the match, before Roberto Firmino and Georginio Wijnaldum added to the tally

Sturridge has said that he is “grateful to God” for being allowed to reach the 100 mark, and the 28-year-old has vowed to continue finding the back of the net.

“I’m grateful to God for blessing me and allowing me to reach that amount of goals,” Sturridge told Liverpool’s official website.

“Hopefully there will be a lot more to come – there could’ve been a lot more but you can never look at the past, you look to the future and say hopefully I’ll be able to score another 100 before my career is over.”

Anthony Martial Could Be A World Top Player – Gary Neville

Featured Image

Gary Neville has claimed that Anthony Martial “could do anything” in the game if he showed “that extra 15%” during matches.

Anthony Martial was United’s hero as the Frenchman came off the bench to score the winner against Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford.

It was the 21-year-old’s fourth Premier League goal of the season, but he has struggled to hold down a regular starting role for Jose Mourinho this season – sharing the left flank with Marcus Rashford.

Neville has insisted that the Frenchman has the ability to become one of the best players in the world, but wants to see more from the former Monaco attacker on a consistent basis.

“It’s been a stop-start Manchester United career for Martial. For someone of his talent, he should be tearing this league apart with his ability. He’s lost his place in the France squad – there’s obviously something wrong with him,” Neville said on The Gary Neville Podcast.

“Mourinho and the French manager has turned off of him a little bit. You always get the feeling he’s playing at 85%. If he showed that extra 15%, then he could do anything. He’s got everything you’d want: composure in front of goal, great skill, pace, strength, but what is that little bit missing?

“The best players in the world don’t have ‘but’s’ – the likes of Luis Suarez, Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi – there are no buts. Martial is well off that category but that’s where he’s got to be looking.

“He’s worth £50m and with that talent, he’s got to step up. He scores in big games, he takes big moments on and obviously has the temperament to play in big games. But come on, let’s see it every single week. He could be a player that could score 20 goals in 20 games if he really wanted to and strived to be the best.”

Eden Hazard Not Giving Up On Premier League Title

Featured Image

Eden Hazard has refused to rule his side out of the Premier League title race following their 1-0 victory over Bournemouth.

Eden Hazard scored the only goal of the game as the defending champions climbed back into the top four of the table, although they remain nine points adrift of leaders Manchester City, who have dropped just two points from their opening 10 games.

Chelsea’s victory on the south coast also saw them record a first clean sheet in their last seven matches, and Hazard talked up the importance of their defensive performance for goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.

“[It was a] very good goal, important also. When you play this kind of game you just need to win. We created a lot of chances… we didn’t score, that’s the problem, but we have three points and we move on,” he told reporters.

“I think Thibaut needed this [result] for the confidence, but I think all the team deserve this, we did well defensively, offensively also.

“The season is long, you never know what can happen. They are top and play well with a lot of goals… but we have a lot of games to play, we will see at the end of the season.”

Guardiola Hails Sane As A Special Talent

Featured Image

Pep Guardiola has lauded Leroy Sane and called him a special talent, after he helped City to a 3-2 win against West Brom.

Sane played a crucial role for City opening the scoring and assisting a Fernandinho goal, after Rodriguez equalised for West From.

The Germany international has scored six goals and provided five assists in City’s last seven matches and Guardiola believes he can still improve.

“He’s a guy who has a special talent, who runs in behind,” he told BBC Sport. “It’s important for our midfield players to do that.

“He’s still young, there are many, many things he can improve.”

Matic: United Still In Title Fight

Featured Image

Nemanja Matic feels United can now challenge for the Premier League title , if they play the same way they did against Tottenham against other top six sides.

Manchester United won the Tottenham after a lone goal courtesy of Martial, ended the game 1-0.

Matic put on a sound display, playing in Lukaku and setting up plays and he believes they can win the title by doing it again.

“If we play like this and continue to play like this we can compete for the title,” Matic told Sky Sports.

“It was very important for us against a very good team – one of the best teams in the league.

“And thanks to Martial we managed to score and win a difficult game against opponents who were very good today.

“They had more of the ball in the first half but we had more clear chances than them. As I said they are great and play great football but the most important thing is the result and we managed to win.

“It’s important to continue to win these types of games. We dropped points in the last game and against Liverpool so it was very important to win at home especially.”

Machin: Barcelona Depend On Messi, Than Madrid Do On Ronaldo

Featured Image

Girona gaffer, Pablo Machin believes Barcelona are a side that depends on Messi, more than Madrid do on Ronaldo.

Messi has scored 11goals to help Barcelona to the top of the table, however, he struggled to make an impact against Girona and Barcelona had to depend on two own goals and a Suarez goal to win.

Machin believes Madrid will play a better game than Barcelona did, despite Ronaldo’s poor run of form.

“They are two very good footballers and two amazing teams. But there’s a greater dependency on Messi at Barcelona than Cristiano at Madrid,” Machin told a news conference.

“They’re numbers, when Messi doesn’t score he gives an assist or starts the play.

“We thought that cancelling out that source of football and goals would give us more chances of beating Barca. It started well because Messi didn’t intervene, but with the own goals and the fact they’re very good, they beat us well.

“Madrid have many more sources to create chances to score, they all do it. We’ll have to focus on trying to stop everyone in the best way possible.”

Zidane: Bale Could Be Fit For Tottenham

Zinedine Zidane has confirmed that Gareth Bale and Keylor Navas could be fit enough for the match against Tottenham next week.

Bale has had a calf injury since the win over Dortmund in September, while Navas has been out due to a thigh strain.

However, Zidane is confident of both footballers being fit enough for next week’s clash.

“They’re improving,” Zidane told reporters. “We’ll assess next week if they can play against Tottenham.

“They still haven’t trained with the team and I still can’t tell if you if they’ll be in London. It depends how their injuries progress.”

Report : Javier Mascherano Set To Quit Barcelona For MLS

Featured Image

Barcelona defender Javier Mascherano has told the club that he intends to leave at the end of this season, according to Sport.

The versatile Argentine, who joined from Liverpool, could move to the MLS for the next stage of his career.

Although Mascherano is still proving himself to be a valuable player for Barcelona, having made eight appearances across all competitions this season, it is understood that the club will be willing to let the former River Plate defender leave Catalonia if an American side meets their valuation of him.

Although money is playing a huge part in Mascherano’s decision to leave Barcelona, he has told the club that he will not be moving to China or Qatar.

Javier Mascherano has been with Barca since 2010 and won four La Liga titles and two Champions League crowns.

Jose Mourinho Hoping To Manage An International Side In The Future

Featured Image

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has told Soccer AM’s Tubes that he would like to manage on the international stage in the future.

He told Sky Sports: “There will be a moment in my career where I would prefer that nature of job, being more analytical and preparing a team inside doors but competes less.

“The experience of living a World Cup or European Championship from the inside is an experience I want to have after so many years I’ve had in football.”

Mourinho has guided United back into the Champions League this season after winning the Europa League in May.

He has won the competition twice during spells at Porto and Inter Milan, but he has hinted that, this season, winning the Premier League title is his priority.

He added: “For everyone, the Champions League is the ‘El Dorado’ — it is something that normally means more than championships.

“But I agree when people say that championships are the ones that make you feel that the season was really great.

“It’s a 10-month competition, it’s a marathon of matches where you have to deal with all the good and the bad things of such a long run.

“I have won all four championships in which I’ve been involved and that’s reason to be proud.”

Ciro Immobile Laughs Off Reports Linking Him To Chelsea Move

Featured Image

Ciro Immobile apparently laughed when he heard reports that Chelsea were interested in his services.

Ciro Immobile has been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge as well as to China.

“We had a good laugh together over that (Chinese bid), including the Chelsea rumour,” his agent Marco Sommella told TMW Radio.

“I want to take this opportunity to publicly thank the club for that renewal. The president and director Igli Tare rewarded the lad, who has become the highest-paid player in the Claudio Lotito era. Many great players have passed through and this deal proves the reciprocal bond between Immobile and Lazio.”

Sommella stressed that Lazio are a team competing with the best and have ambitions of qualifying for next season’s Champions League.

He added: ‘It went well last season, but this term the Biancocelesti have started even better. We are only at the beginning, it’ll be difficult, but it’s a great period of form.

‘Lazio have built a competitive squad, despite having inferior revenue streams compared to the others.

‘They will fight for a Champions League place and are proving they are no flash in the pan: you don’t defeat Juvents twice in such a short space of time as a fluke.

‘They had also played very well against Napoli, but were unlucky with injuries. The Rome Derby will be a bit of a crossroads for the campaign.’

Southampton Still Looking For An Identity – Mauricio Pellegrino

Featured Image

Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino has admitted his side are still searching for their “identity”.

“We have played nine games in the Premier League. It’s not too much when you think about the evolution of the team,” said the Argentinian, who was installed as Claude Puel’s replacement in June.

“In modern football, nine games, you can write a lot of history about that, but nine games in the history of the club is nothing.

“To build a connection between the players, this is nothing. We are changing in two or three different ways and we are changing players because we want to see how they feel in different situations.”

The Saints, who lost 3-0 on their last trip to the Amex Stadium at the start of 2012, will be without club-record signing Mario Lemina due to an ankle injury sustained in training.
The former Juventus midfielder has been in fine form for his new club and will take some replacing.

“He’s the type of player, and I’ve said this before, that we didn’t have in the squad and this is the reason we bought him,” Pellegrino said.

“But I think we’ve got players to replace him. Players with quality and most of them are ready to play, maybe in a different way because Mario is a guy that can cover a lot of distance.
“Our transition I think has improved a lot with Mario on the pitch, b ut every single player has different qualities.”
One player hoping to make a rare start in Lemina’s absence is Sofiane Boufal, whose stunning solo goal after stepping off the bench last week clinched his side a 1-0 home win against West Brom.
Pellegrino said his side will have to be at their best against Brighton, who have registered three Premier League wins since promotion in May.

“It will be a difficult game,” he added. “Really tough because they have been working for a long period of time with the same manager, the same ideas.

“They’ve got clear ideas and are really tough in set-plays. On the counter-attack they are dangerous and I think we need a really good performance to take something positive.
“For me, the three teams coming from the Championship, I’m really surprised.

Huddersfield, Newcastle and Brighton, they’re doing really well.

“I’ve never seen something like that from the beginning, all three (promoted) teams playing really well, winning games and being very competitive from the beginning.”

Osinbajo Lambasts Christian Leaders, Says “Nobody Can Islamise Nigeria”

Featured Image

The Vice-President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo has lambasted Christian leaders in the country for their failure to unite the Christendom as one body, even as he declared that it was impossible for anyone to Islamise Nigeria as claimed.

It is understood that the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has continuously accused the federal government of trying to Islamise Nigeria – with the recent accusation coming shortly after the federal government introduced Sukuk bond.

Here’s The Full List Of 25 Nigerian Roads The N100bn Sukuk Proceeds Will Fund

The Federal Government’s N100bn Sukuk (Islamic bond), which it plans to use for road construction, became a target of criticism by some Christian leaders in the country, who believed the government was committing the country to an Islamic financial hold.

Although the federal government clarified the policy and even explained that the bond would be used to construct 25 roads across the country, yet the development did not sit too well with some religious leaders.

However, Osinbajo, who spoke in Lagos on Friday during the Greater Nigeria Pastors Conference convened by Apostle Wale Adefarasin and Rev. Abayomi Kasali, explained that the recent uproar over the country’s subscription to Sukuk Bonds was not justified.

Osinbajo said, “Part of the problem is the failure of Christian leadership to take its rightful place. We focus our minds on something we call the Islamic agenda. We look for it everywhere as if we are looking for demons.

“But where is the Christian agenda. Are we not entitled to one? We are too divided as Christians to have an agenda. The key to the unity and progress of Nigeria is in the church.”

According to him, there were no plans to Islamise Nigeria through the Sukuk bond or the country’s membership of the Islamic Development Bank.

Nigeria Releases N100 Billion Sukuk Bond Proceeds For 25 Road Projects

The VP further said that apart from Nigeria, many nations of the world including the United States of America and the United Kingdom had also embraced the system as a result of its progressive nature.

He contiinued: “The Sukuk is an Islamic concept, which enables people to have access to credit. It is essentially like a bond. The US, UK, China, South Africa have all used the Sukuk. Once there is money in the market, let us not get sentimental. The most important thing is for us to use those monies well.

“Some people say there are some hidden things in this arrangement and that one day somebody is going to take us over. Where? How will that happen? These are straightforward financial systems used all over the world. I don’t think it presents any real problem. It is a very progressive financial system.

“Nigeria became a member of the Islamic Development Bank in 2005 and the first person to sit as director of the bank was Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala. The second person to sit as a director is the current Finance Minister, Kemi Adeosun, and both of them are Christians. So, when people talk about Islamic agenda, sometimes I am lost.

“The person who brought us into the bank is not a Fulani or Northerner, the person was a Christian, so why are we complaining? Nigeria is the fourth largest shareholder in the Islamic Bank. This wasn’t Buhari’s making. We must have facts before saying things. But above all, we must ask ourselves if being a member of the bank profits us or not.

“For me, I have no problem with this. We can use what we get there to develop our society. This is the most important for me.”

Nigeria’s Senate And Its Basket Of Empty Probes – Fredrick Nwabufo

CLICK here to read more opinion articles

The Nigeria senate is impotent. So impotent that it engages in theatrical probes to conceal the absence of a legislative manhood.

I have followed the senate closely. In fact, I covered that arm of the national assembly in the past. So, I can say with a verisimilitude of certainty that I have copious knowledge of the institution.

Its only approach to issues of volcanic magnitude is conducting ineffectual probes. Probe this, probe that. I have become weary of the countless insipid probes.

The nucleic problem is that the probes are not usually followed with pristine actions. Perhaps, the senate uses them as a spectre of distraction or as a means of “toasting” Nigerians  -“we are on top of the situation” – while its members gormandise the coveted national cake. I am sure every Nigerian knows the meaning of this abused and trite clause – “we are on top of the situation”.

On Tuesday, the upper legislative chamber embarked on a futile exercise of braggadocio –  to probe the circumstances of how Abdulrasheed Maina, alleged pension thief, who was on exile in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), breezed into the country; how he was reinstated into the civil service, and how he was promoted to director at the ministry of interior.

Despite, the wise counsel of Senator Tayo Alasodura that “we (senate) should not always duplicate the executive; if the executive has ordered an investigation we should not order another one”, the chest-thumping senate still resolved to ask its committees on interior and anti-corruption, public service and establishment to investigate the matter. And I ask, to what end?

It is clear that the senate’s answer to every problem is probe – often without result. The upper legislative chamber also appears to savour duplicating the executive. Let me explain.

A few days ago when Ibe Kachiwku’s jarring missive of allegations against Maikanti Baru, NNPC GMD, ticked off a public outcry, the presidency ordered an immediate investigation of the claims. The senate, perhaps, not to be outdone, also asked its committee on petroleum to investigate the allegations. And I ask again, to what end? What has come out of all the previous probes on education, NNPC and power?

Why is the senate in a frantic chase of a will-o-the-wisp? I remember in March when the upper legislative chamber took its battle with the executive to Hameed Ali, comptroller-general of the Nigeria Customs Service, the institution huffed and puffed like a wounded dragon, but to date there is no splinter of result from its investigation of the customs chief.

For the senate to be taken seriously, it must make resolutions from its investigations actionable. It must put gravitas to its functions. If it must probe, it should be ready to tell Nigerians the result and effect of the action.

It makes no sense the time and money spent investigating an issue, only for the findings to be tucked away in a webby shelf. Maybe, the senate is using “probes” to play to the gallery and to cloak its lazy schedule.

The upper legislative chamber must put oomph and gravitas to its probes.

The money was awarded as compensation for the unlawful arrest and detention of Maikori between February 17 and 18, 2017 and again March 10 and 13, 2017.

Delivering judgement in the fundamental human rights enforcement suit filed by Maikori on May 5, 2017, Justice John Tsoho ordered the four respondents including to pay the damages to the applicant.

The respondents to the suit are the Inspector-General of Police, the Commissioner of Police in Kaduna State, the Governor of Kaduna State and the Attorney-General of Kaduna State.

Nasir El-Rufai denies slapping his deputy governorReacting to this, on Friday evening, Mr. El-Rufai said the matter would be appealed in the Supreme Court, adding that neither him nor the Nigerian police had erred in the arrest and detention of the music entrepreneur.

In a statement issued through his spokesperson, Samuel Aruwan, the governor said the court judgment won’t truncate an ongoing criminal proceeding he earlier caused the police to file against Mr. Maikori.

“The judgment will not stop this criminal trial. There is no malicious prosecution going on.”

“The state government can file complaints, but it is the business of the police to make arrests following the normal procedures.

“Our lawyers will study the judgement and take the appropriate steps. We will appeal up to the Supreme Court if necessary,” he said.

Maikori was arrested in Lagos on February 17, on allegations of posting “inciting” tweets alleging the killing of some Southern Kaduna students by Fulani herdsmen.

He was later released on bail.
