The President also lamented Nigeria’s loss during the Civil War (1967-1970), saying such should never be allowed to happen again.

The Vice President

Distinguished Senate President

Honourable Speaker of the House of Representatives

Chief Justice of Nigeria

Members of the Federal Executive Council

Permanent Secretaries

Chief of Defence Staff

Service Chiefs and Inspector General of Police

Members of the Diplomatic Corps

Senior Officers

Distinguished Veterans

Ladies and Gentlemen, Members of the Press

I heartily welcome you all to the formal launching of the Armed Forces Remembrance Day Celebration 2018 Emblem and Appeal Fund. Our gathering here today is in continuation of a worthy tradition of recognizing and appreciating the sacrifices of our veterans in the First and Second World Wars, Nigerian Civil War, Peace Support Operations around the world, and Internal Security Operations particularly the ongoing war on insurgency in the North-eastern part of the country.

2. It is indeed worthwhile to honour the memory of our distinguished veterans who paid the supreme sacrifice to keep the country united. Some others have spent the best part of their lives in Service to keep our nation and the world in peace.

3. The resolve by our countrymen and women to remain in one indivisible and indissoluble nation, Nigeria is at the centre of this celebration. Indeed the Remembrance Day Celebration is being marked on the 15th of January instead of 11th of November as in other Commonwealth nations to commemorate the end of the Nigerian civil war – a war that was fought to keep Nigeria one.

4. We must therefore cast our minds back at the events that led to the civil war, the immense human capital loss of the tragic war, and resolve that never again shall we allow our dear nation by our actions or inactions to experience another war.

5. I want to salute the gallantry, courage and sacrifices of men and women of the Armed Forces as they grapple with diverse and contemporary security challenges plaguing the country.

6. I appreciate your display of unparalleled loyalty to the country and dedication to duty. Being one of you, I understand what you have to undergo. This administration will continue to do all within its power and resources to ensure that your welfare is adequately catered for.

7. The noble culture of appreciation and respect for veterans and servicemen and women experienced all over the world is very much part of us in Nigeria.

8. I therefore look forward to a time when business concerns and service providers in the country would give special recognition and consideration for these distinguished citizens and support the veterans’ cause in any way they can through voluntary donations, employment opportunities and welfare support.

9. As a government we desire to improve the capability of our Armed Forces. I am glad that our efforts are yielding positive results already in boosting the morale of men and women of the Armed Forces.

10. We will continue to engage them in training and retraining to improve on their capacity to discharge their constitutional roles.

11. As I launch the Emblem today, I call on all Nigerians, the Diaspora and our friends to donate generously to the cause of the Nigerian Legion and families of the Fallen Heroes.

12. I implore all to procure and wear the emblem with pride as a way of identifying with those that laid down their lives, the incapacitated and others still who are daily in harm’s way in order to guarantee our peace and security. We will always remember them and the respect we owe them.

13. I also hereby launch the Partnership Scheme for the Armed Forces in which all Nigerians, corporate organizations and government agencies should support and partner with the Nigerian Armed Forces in appreciation of the sacrifices of these honourable men and women.

14. May I use this medium to commend the Nigerian Legion of which I am the Grand Patron, for its effort in maintaining comradeship of the Servicemen and servicewomen after retirement.

15. Let me use this opportunity to thank the state Governors who are patrons of the Legion in their respective states for the support they have been rendering to the Legion. I urge them to continue and improve on this even in the face of dwindling resources.

16. Distinguished Veterans, Ladies and Gentlemen, it is my singular honour and privilege to launch the 2018 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Emblem and Appeal Fund.

17. Thank you all and God bless Nigeria.

Matic Has Nothing To Prove To Chelsea

Featured Image

Former Chelsea midfielder, Nemanja Matic, says he has nothing to prove to the club, as he prepares for a return to the Bridge with United.

The Serbia international midfielder was deemed surplus to requirements at Chelsea and sold to United for £40 million.

Matic has been impressive for Manchester United so far this season and will feature against Chelsea on Sunday.

Matic told reporters ahead of the heavyweight encounter: “When I played there I showed my quality. We won the title twice, we also won cups. So I don’t need to prove anything to them – I need to prove it to my new club.

“I spent a good time at Chelsea, three-and-a-half years is a long time, so, of course, it means a lot to me to go back. It’s going to be something special to play again in the stadium.

“But now I’m on the other side, I’m a Manchester United player. I’m a professional and I’m going to do my best against them to get three points for my team. We know how important this game is.”

Benzema Desperate To Play For France

Featured Image

Real Madrid star , Karim Benzema is hoping to end his two-year break from the France international team and get a World Cup call-up.

Benzema last featured for the national team in 2015, before he was ensnared in a blackmail case involving Valbuena and a sex tape.

The striker has been cleared, but Didier Deschamps has not seen it fit to call him up.

“You have to make the most of all opportunities,” he told Les Inrockuptibles.
“Of course I want to come back to the France team. Which footballer does not dream of playing a World Cup? I try to be the best in my club and we will see in the end.

“Talking is no longer useful and it can be misinterpreted. I don’t speak anymore; I do not say anything anymore. I try to have good performances and win titles.

“It’s difficult to understand the perception that people can have for me in France, but I don’t think I can change that.

“There is a small minority who enjoy saying anything every day, thinking that it can improve audience [figures] or sell papers.”

Lampard: Chelsea Miss Moses

Featured Image

Former Chelsea midfielder, Frank Lampard believes the absence of Victor Moses is having a major effect on the club, following their 3-0 loss to Roma in the UCL.

The Nigeria international forward has been out of action since October 14 and Zappacosta and Azpilicueta have not been able to cut it as his replacement.

And after the 3-0 trouncing at the ends of Roma in Italy, Lampard believes Moses is who Chelsea is missing.

“Moses is a miss,” Lampard told BT Sport.
“You wouldn’t have thought that 18 months ago with what he’s given them in the right-wing back position.

“[Conte] is covering it with Azpilicueta, he’s covering it with Zappacosta and it’s affecting the whole back five and I think he will want to get back to knowing what his three is and working on it through the week.

“The players are going to have to react because I don’t think Conte is a manager that will change his way. He might change players in the team but they’ll have to work.

“Hearing discontent about training, they better get used to it because he’ll want to work his way out of it.”

Animal Farm: President Buhari And His New Ministers – Mayowa Tijani

CLICK here to read more opinion articles

A lot of good news has been beaming out of the corridors of power in Nigeria over the past week. For me, the top on the list is the awesome state of health of President Muhammadu Buhari, who was too many times rumoured dead, due to his prolonged absence from the country.

This piece was written by Mayowa Tijani. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

Buhari is back!

It is a good time to be back in full throttle. Nigeria, for the first time in the 15-year history of the World Bank’s ease of doing business report, was part of the top 10 most-improved countries. To add icing to Jumoke Oduwole’s well-baked cake, the country outclassed Rwanda in its improvement, ranking as one of the top three most improved in sub-Saharan Africa.

Before this, Babachir Lawal, erstwhile secretary to the government of the federation, was told to go and chill at home. Before this Baba-chill drama, we saw the swift response of the president to Mainagate — a story still in the telling. Is the president part of the plan as the head of service’s memo suggests? Time will tell.

As the president got back on his feet, and began walking briskly to the end of his first term, he is stragtegically giving us the body language of a man that seems to be all set to run for a second term.

Understanding the relationship between President Buhari and Nasir el-Rufai, the governor of Kaduna state, I began to get the signals of Buhari’s thirst for a second term, when the governor came out to say the president has told him to run for a second term in Kaduna.

El-Rufai said Buhari gave him the nod to recontest as state governor in 2019, undoing all the 2019 presidency fireworks between the governor and former vice-president Atiku Abubakar, who seemed to have entered the bout earlier.

“It was after I finished briefing him that he (the president) gave me the nod to seek re-election together with my deputy,” el-Rufai said early october, rather confirming he was out of the 2019 presidency picture.

If Buhari runs and win in 2019, he would break a record as the first octogenerian to have led Nigeria, by the end of his second term.

In 2015, while at the Nigerian Institute of Journalism, I was told to review George Orwell’s classic, Animal Farm. At the time, I thought George Orwell wrote about Nigeria, 75 years too soon. This opinion has not changed.

In Orwell’s classic, animals had revolted against the rulership of man, and decided they were set to rule and lead by their own guiding principles. Just like the All Progressives Congress (APC) “revolted” against the rulership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Buhari and APC promised heaven on earth; they promised to run a lean government, be frugal, bolster the economy, reduce unemployment, battle inflation, fight corruption, among other things.

Upon assumption of office, APC began to blame PDP and former president Goodluck Jonathan for milking the country dry, for leaving a lean reserve, and “literally emptying the coffers”. They said Jonathan had oil above $100 and has nothing to show for it.

But latest languages from the President Muhammadu Buhari shows that we have not learnt much from the errors of the past.

Speaking to the APC national executive committee (NEC) on Tuesday, the president said: “By the Grace of God these (new) appointments will be announced soon. Especially now that the economy is improving, we will have the resources to cater for the appointees”.

“By the same token the compressed Federal Executive Council will be expanded to bring in more supporters at Federal Level, with fresh ideas to be injected into the government.”

This shows that the president thinks its alright to loosen our economic belt and have new public offices to channel our resources into, and score political points in the process. By every passing day, the standards are being edited to suit political purposes, just as the pigs did in Animal Farm.

The animals who saw the luxury of Mr Jones’ life, said “no animal shall wear clothes, no animal shall sleep in a bed, no animal shall drink alcohol, all animals are equal”.  They believed animals must be just and not be given to “undue comfort”.

With oil at $60 per barrel, and economic growth of less than one percent, I strongly suggest that our national lifestyle remain frugal. We cannot be funding new portfolios on record debts.

Mr President, the economy has not improved to the state of appointing new ministers to bring in more supporters, under the guise of fresh ideas. And to say you will attempt “to get the balance right” suggests that we are looking at a minimum of one minister from each geopolitical zone — that is a minimum of six new ministers in all!

Orwell ends animal farm with these lines: “Twelve voices were shouting in anger, and they were all alike. No question, now, what had happened to the faces of the pigs. The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which”.

This is my message to President Buhari and the preferred animals — or supporters in this case — in this animal farm: Soon, the life of this administration will come to an end, and if care is not taken, after four or eight years in office, we would look from man (PDP) to pig (APC), pig (APC) to man (PDP) and not know which is which.

Buhari To Present 2018 Budget To NASS On Thursday

Featured Image

Barring any unforeseen circumstances, President Muhammadu Buhari is expected to present the 2018 budget estimates to a joint session of the National Assembly on Thursday, November 2, a prominent media outfit said.

Daily Trust quoted multiple sources at the presidency as saying that the Executive had completed arrangements for the presentation of the fiscal document to the National Assembly tomorrow.

Last week Thursday, the Federal Executive Council (FEC) had, at its meeting presided over by President Buhari, approved the draft budget proposal.

Speaking on Tuesday, a source hinted that the president had gotten the approval of the National Assembly’s principal officers for the submission of the document.

“Yes, arrangements have been completed, the budget will be presented to the legislature this Thursday so that they can begin working on it in earnest,” said another source.

The Minister of Budget and National Planning, Senator Udoma Udo Udoma, had at the end of FEC meeting at the presidential villa, Abuja told State House correspondents that the Council will liaise with the National Assembly to determine when the president will submit the draft estimates for the consideration of the two chambers.

“We are liaising with the National Assembly because they have to approve the date for the president to come and address them to submit the budget. Before now, we used to submit in December, but now, the budget is ready in October. So, there is a very big difference,” he had said.

Meanwhile, President Buhari, last night, hosted principal officers of the National Assembly to a rescheduled dinner, at the new Banquet Hall of the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja.

The dinner could not hold last Thursday because the lawmakers refused to undergo personal security checks at the Pilot Gate of the Presidential Villa.

Buhari To “Soon” Appoint More Ministers

Featured Image

President Muhammadu Buhari has hinted that he will soon appoint more ministers into his cabinet.

The president, who gave hints of the new appointments in a speech delivered yesterday at the National Executive of the All Progressives Congress (APC), also said that he will make board appointments.

Full Text Of President Buhari’s Speech At The NEC Of APC

At the moment, the president has 36 ministers, with 14 of them being ministers of state while he doubles as the full minister of petroleum, having earlier said he preferred a trimmed cabinet to avoid waste.

But now faced with demands by his party for more inclusiveness and patronage, he said he would be shifting ground soon.

The “compressed Federal Executive Council”, he said, “will be expanded to bring in more supporters at Federal Level, with fresh ideas to be injected into the government”. He did not indicate whether he will do a cabinet reshuffle.

In the same vein, the President also hinted he will be appointing more people to the boards of government agencies and corporations.

“Last year I said we would re-constitute the Boards of Parastatals. I must regret the fact that we have not done so, for many reasons.

“Some of us in this meeting may know I had given instructions since October 2015 for this exercise to start. But there have been inordinate delays through several Committees in an attempt to get the balance right and to make sure all parts of the country are equitably represented.

“On the other hand, I am keenly aware that our supporters are very eager for these appointments to be announced. By the Grace of God, these appointments will be announced soon. Especially now that the economy is improving, we will have the resources to cater for the appointees.”, he said.

El Shaarawy: Chelsea Win Is Unforgettable

Featured Image

Stephan El Shaarawy has hailed the 3-0 win over Chelsea by AC Milan, after scoring a brace in a night that he will not forget.

Roma forced a 3-3 draw at the Stamford Bridge against Chelsea , but ran away with the game at home, winning 3-0.

And El Shaarawy opened the scoring from 25 yards after 39 seconds, before knocking in the second after a mistake from Rudiger.

“It’s the kind of night that you never forget, for the rest of your life,” he told Roma’s official website.

“This is a special night – it was my first brace in the Champions League, plus beating Chelsea 3-0 doesn’t happen every day. This win means a lot to us.

“It means a great deal [to go top of the group]. When the draw was made, there was some doubt surrounding us.

“But we went to London and played a really good game, at a tough ground. Now we have an important game before the international break [at Fiorentina in Serie A]. We’re purely focused on that.”

Metuh’s Trial: DSS Finally Obeys Court Order, Produces Dasuki

Featured Image

The Department of State Services (DSS) has finally obeyed the Federal High Court in Abuja order as it has produced the detained former National Security Adviser (NSA), Sambo Dasuki, to court.

The court had ordered that the ex-NSA should appear as a witness in the ongoing trial of a former Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, Mr. Olisa Metuh.

The Punch reports that Dasuki was produced by operatives of the DSS ahead of the Wednesday’s proceedings which commenced exactly 9 am.

It is understood that he was putting on a light blue attire with a cap to match.

Earlier, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had told the court that Dasuki has agreed to testify in the trial of the former PDP spokesman.

Metuh’s Trial: Jonathan, Dasuki Fail To Appear In Court

It was gathered that EFCC counsel, Sylvanus Tahir on Tuesday read out a text message from the Director of Legal in the DSS that Dasuki, who initially did not want to testify in the trial, has accepted to testify.

On Tuesday, despite the request by defence lawyers for an order of arrest to be issued against the Director-General of the DSS, Lawal Daura, for failing to produce the ex-NSA in court, the trial judge, Justice Okon Abang ruled that he could not yet conclude that the DSS top man deliberately flouted the court order.

Courtois: Chelsea Must Beat United

Featured Image

Thibaut Courtois feels that Chelsea needs to get all points on Sunday against Manchester United, if they plan on retaining their title.

Chelsea are fourth on the table and nine points behind table topping Manchester City and are four points behind United, who they play on Sunday.

Courtois conceded three goals in the UCL clash against Roma at the Stadio Olimpico and he thinks a win at the Bridge on Sunday will go a long way in their title defence.

“If we want to remain near the top of the Premier League then it is a must win game for us,” Courtois said at the Stadio Olympico. “I think City is at nine points [ahead of us], United is at four. Tottenham is just one in front but this game is a must win if you want to remain near the top and near the other teams.

“We will try to get three points and give our lives for it on Sunday.

Courtois was asked if the Blues were having trouble coping with the Champions League and the Premier League this season.
“I don’t think so,” the goalkeeper replied. “We try to do our best and we want to be in the Champions League. A few years ago, we won the league while playing in the Champions League.

“Obviously it is a change so it is harder. We are tired quicker than last year but I don’t think it affects us. I think we just need to keep training well and be ready for Sunday. I think after the Palace game and I think Roma after, we showed some good character against Watford and Bournemouth.

“We could have won 4-0 vs Bournemouth so I think we will have to meet tomorrow, see the images and see what we could have done better and then give 150 per cent of ourselves on Sunday.”

Toolz, Isaac Geralds, Chef Benedict & SA’s Miss Curvy Lala SLAY The Runway For About That Curvy Life At Heineken Lagos Fashion And Design Week

Featured Image

For the second time in a row at Heineken Lagos Fashion and Design Week, Latasha Ngwube’s About that Curvy Life Collective has pushed Fashion industry boundaries in Africa – defying the stereotypical belief that plus-size, curvy women can’t be fashionable.

Already garnering accolades from international platforms like CNN Africa and Essence this year, the ATCL Collective Showcase is a major hot topic, and for good reason.

ATCL brought a brand new vibe to the LFDW runway, by featuring two new designers in it’s lineup, Osuare and Nori Clothing, who wowed the audience with their avant-garde designs and eclectic outfits, beautifully modeled by plus-sized women who rocked the runway confidently.  In addition, contemporary menswear brand, Assian, which also showcased last year, did not disappoint, with bold, statement ensembles especially made for men of all sizes who aren’t afraid to take chances with their style.

There were lots of memorable moments during the show. The presentation began with songbird, Isaac Geralds, looking dapper in an Assian outfit, as he serenaded the audience with a few lines from Christiana Aguilera’s ‘Beautiful.’

Nigerian Italian Chef, Benedict also hit the runway as a celebrity for Assian, as did Oluwatosin Ogundadegbe (Thestyleinfidel), who also walked the runway in an ensemble by Assian. Style Connoisseur, Korede Roberts, worked behind the scenes with the brand to ensure that the collection was fashion-forward, with a distinct wearable appeal.

Another glorious moment was when media personality, Tolu Oniru-Demuren (Toolz), strutted down the runway, flaunting her beautiful curves in an outfit by Osuare. Also, South African plus-size model and body positivity activist Lala Tshabalala, smouldered in a black laceup dress by Nori’s Clothings.

Yet another notable highlight of the show was seeing the beautiful models incorporate elements of pink in their individual looks, in honour of Breast Cancer Awareness month. Each donned either a thick pink braid or a pink wig and they looked totally fabulous. Presenting a properly thought-out collection was of utmost importance to the creator of #AboutthatcurvylifeCollective, Latasha Ngwube.

Speaking on the success of the ATCL Showcase, Ngwube notes that she is thankful to Intel for returning yet again this year to support ATCL at what is undoubtedly one of the foremost Fashion Week events in Africa. She also thanks Heineken LFDW for the opportunity to include diversity in this year’s showcase once again.
