Arsene Wenger To Decide Jack Wilshere’s Arsenal Future In December

Featured Image

Arsene Wenger will decide next month whether Jack Wilshere has earned a new Arsenal contract, giving the club the chance to sell him in January if he has not.

“I said many times that [Wilshere’s future] would be decided in December,” the Gunners boss said. “I wanted to give him six months not to think about that and see where we go.

“I see him more as a player who can affect the game in the final third than a box to box player. I see him more as somebody who has a quick response, quick reactions in the final third and the quality of the pass in the final third.

“He turns well the game forward, he can chip a little ball, he can pass people on the short space. That’s why I think the system suits him well.”

I’m Not Interested In Everton Job – Nuno Espirito

Featured Image

Wolverhampton manager Nuno Espirito Santo has revealed that he will “respect” his contract at the club amid reports linking him with a switch to Everton.

Since arriving at the Wolves in May, Nuno Espirito has won 13 of his 19 games in charge, with Wolves sitting at the top of the standings in the Championship

That record had led to interest from the Toffees, but the Portuguese has indicated that he has no interest in moving to Goodison Park.

The 43-year-old told BBC WM: “When you sign a contract, you must respect that. It’s a project that requires commitment.

“The only focus in my mind is the game on Friday. Nothing else can distract us. We are on the way to something important. We are doing things well.”

Chelsea Couldn’t Stop Nemanja Matic’s Move To Manchester United

Featured Image

Thibaut Courtois says that Nemanja Matic was so determined to join Manchester United in the summer that it would have been too difficult for Chelsea to keep himl.

“If a player nowadays wants to go to a team, then he has – I don’t want to say the power – but if he has a strong will to leave and join another team then it is hard for the club,” he said in quotes carried by The Independent.

“You cannot just ignore him and say ‘you cannot leave’ because then you have a disappointed player who won’t play at his best. So obviously for us you give a player to another big team, but they are choices that are made in football and we have some quality midfielder, so I hope we can show on Sunday that we are better.”

Partey: Atletico Can Still Progress In UCL

Featured Image

Atletico Madrid midfielder, Thomas Partey believes his side can still qualify for the knockout stage of the UCL.

The Ghana international scored the goal that helped Atletico Madrid claim a 1-1 draw against Qarabag.

The Rojiblancos currently sit third on the table in their group and have a slim chance of qualifying, but Partey believes it possible.

“We lacked a bit of luck to score the second goal. We played a great game and now we cannot lower our arms,” Partey said.

“We created many occasions. We have to keep fighting as a team.

“We all work to score goals every weekend. We have to continue without lowering our arms and fighting until the end,” he added.

Southgate: Wilshere Must Play For Arsenal, To Play For England

Featured Image

Gareth Southgate has stated that the only way Jack Wilshere will return to the England squad is if he plays more matches for Arsenal.

The England international midfielder was tipped to enter the England squad after impressing in the Europa, by Wenger.

However, Wilshere has missed out of the November friendlies and Southgate says he will speak to Wenger, but says the midfielder must play.

“I don’t know how you get in an England squad without getting in the Arsenal team,” he told a news conference when asked about Wilshere, who has only made one appearance as a second-half substitute in the Premier League this season.

“There is no question about his ability, his football brain or personality, we just need to see him playing before he comes back in because unfortunately there has been a history of injuries.

“I’ll be having discussions with Arsene about him, we think he is a top player so for him it’s about game time.”

Osinbajo: The ‘Outsider-Insider’ In Buhari’s Govt

Featured Image

Osinbajo: The ‘Outsider-Insider’ In Buhari’s Govt – Abimbola Adelakun

CLICK here to read more opinion articles

Somebody should advise the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, to please give up his ostentatious performance of moral propriety; his Mr. Goody Two-Shoes acts are irritating.

This piece was written by Abimbola Adelakun. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

Last Friday, at the Greater Nigeria Pastors Conference, Osinbajo, in a smugly virtuous umbrage, criticised the socio-cultural penchant for elevating “quota” system over merit in Nigeria. He argued that for Nigeria to be a better country, appointments should be based on individual suitability for the position, not ethnic identity. The delicious irony of his magisterial solipsism is that this was not the first time he would make such an observation. In December 2016, he made a similar remark in Abuja at the conferment of the Nigerian National Order of Merit where he argued that placing quota over merit does not work in our collective interest. Osinbajo was responding to allegations that Buhari’s appointments have been, so far, tribalistic in outlook but he could have done us favour why the preponderance of those who have qualified for positions under Buhari have been members of his tribe.

Ordinarily, it should not be hard for one to agree with Osinbajo except coming from a high-ranking official whose administration closed its eyes to the “clandestine” recruitments of their cronies to the so-called juicy offices in Nigeria, his admonition rings hollow. A year ago, the scandal broke that the Nigerian apex bank, the Central Bank of Nigeria, secretly recruited relatives of President Muhammadu Buhari, his ministers’ children and relatives, and other high-ranking All Progressives Congress members to the bank. The Vice President now wants to pontificate on “merit” or speak against “quota.” Unless, of course, he clarifies what he means by merit, and how and why the children of his political associates qualify for “juicy” government positions more than the children of millions of Nigeria on whose back they rode to power.

Osinbajo should explain what “merit” may mean in the Nigerian context when President Buhari has the nerve to ask the World Bank to concentrate developmental projects in the “Northern Region” of the country. Where is the equity herein? Yes, indeed there is a case to be made about rebuilding the parts of the northern region that had been ravaged by Boko Haram. But when such an initiative comes from a President who has been more provincial than national – especially from his world view to his political appointments – his self-justifications pass the smell test. For whose benefit was Osinbajo pontificating when the political elite he works with, especially the ones who valourise poverty to bamboozle their simple-minded followers are the ones who abridge merit to favour their own scion? If they genuinely believed in merit, they would throw the recruitment process open and not pass their entitled kids through a back-door waiver.

Osinbajo must surely know all these and jumping over them to make some sanctimonious statements about “merit” vs. “quota” is a waste of our time. He should save the sermon for his associates at the next APC rally where everyone will pat one another’s back to salute their mediocre achievements.

Osinbajo, last month in Lagos, also spoke against Nigerians and their habituation to corruption. He claimed he found it disheartening that Nigerians have accepted corruption as a way of life and they even celebrate corrupt officials. Osinbajo decried such attitudes. Again, one is inclined to agree with Osinbajo, at least, theoretically. Several instances support his assertion: from the scandalous amounts that are regularly expropriated in Nigeria, to the obscene waste of public funds on white elephants, Nigeria is being bled by her carers. An instance where one of the poorest and unproductive states in Nigeria has a governor who rides an SUV worth a reported N44m (and which, recently, got burnt in Lagos) should ordinarily be deemed unacceptable. However, some of the most corrupt public officials in Nigeria today are in Osinbajo’s party, and several brazen acts of corruption have been carried out under their watch. Osinbajo still has the gumption to publicly sermonise against corruption?

Osinbajo’s new-found advocacy, coming from a man who serves in a government that has been accommodating of corruption, as recent events show, and which has managed its relations with the public on with an admixture of arrogance and profound ignorance, is at best, laughable. If Osinbajo wants to condemn corruption in Nigeria, he does not need to go to Lagos to make empty speeches. Right there in the Federal Capital Territory, where he lives in government quarters, are the faces of official corruption in Nigeria.

There is little need to criticise poor and longsuffering Nigerians groaning under their jackboots for their lack of inspiring following, he should start his preaching with his associates who pad the annual nation budgets to scandalous heights.

The APC, drowning under the weight of their own quackery and self-imposed bondage of heightened expectations and over-promise, should not turn around to blame Nigerians for not being the change they want to see in the world. It is not the fault of Nigerians that Buhari’s government is embroiled in the scandal of the former Chairman of the Pension Reform Task Team, Abdulrasheed Maina. It is also not the fault of Nigerians that Osinbajo chose to play a rather pusillanimous role that belied his activist stance when he was questioned on the foggy role he played in the NNPC- Maikanti Baru issue.

Meanwhile, in August, shortly after Buhari returned from his extended medical leave in the UK, Osinbajo was quoted as saying in a speech that medical tourism was draining Nigeria’s reserves and needed to be checked. As it turned out, the remarks were made by the D.G. of Voice of Nigeria, Osita Okechukwu, who represented Osinbajo at the event. When the irony in his reported statement hit him, Okechukwu claimed to be acting on his own behalf and not the VP’s. Despite Okechukwu’s attempt to refute the damage by owning the statement he made on behalf of the man he represented, the point was clear enough: these people are double-dealers. Their virtues are a put-on, and not ingrained; their moral and ethical acts are pre-written and pre-rehearsed, not spontaneous. Okechukwu’s statement was spot on but he had to retract it for the sake of the President who would not live up to his own promises to stop medical tourism.

Finally – and this last point does not exhaust the catalogue of Osinbajo’s double-dealing –  he criticised the church for not speaking out enough against corruption. Two weeks ago, while speaking in Lagos, he remarked that corruption exists in Nigeria because the church is in cahoots with corrupt politicians. As usual, Osinbajo’s remark was “on point” although I only partially agree with him on the issue of persistence of corruption in Nigeria.

Corruption in Nigeria is systemic, and whether religious leaders shout themselves hoarse or not, it will continue. No society has ever alleviated corruption by merely ramping up the society’s moral consciousness. If they did just that, people will still pillage and plunder public wealth if they get the means. Countries that are relatively free from corruption are that way, not because their religious leaders work overtime, but because they developed modern and sophisticated means of stopping itchy fingers from accessing the public resources. Osinbajo, as a professor and lawyer, should know this.

Osinbajo says the right things but to the wrong audience and at the wrong time too. The very things he publicly condemns are what the constitution empowers his government to redress. If, for instance, anyone wants to speak of appointing people into public offices in Nigeria based on merit and not on some nepotistic formula, it should not come from Osinbajo who is Buhari’s wingman and is therefore implicated in the lopsidedness he condemns. The same goes for his other criticisms. If he is disturbed by his conscience and wants to turn things around, he should turn to the President and have a critical conversation about the shortcomings of their government and their aborted manifesto. The change they once promised us does not begin with Nigerians who are suffering from their lack of effectiveness; it begins with those like Osinbajo himself who have executive powers.

#AFRIFF2017 Day 3: Connecting Africa Through Film

Featured Image

The excitement continued Tuesday, as the Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF) entered its third day, opening with a lighting design masterclass facilitated by the Embassy of The United States.

The six-hour long session which was held at the Ultima Studios, Lekki, Lagos, had interested delegates converge under the mentorship of veteran, Christian Epps.

Delegates, following the money trail, gathered at the Eko Hotels and Suites for a high powered business clinic on co-financing and co-production opportunities with South Africa, facilitated by ‘Tango with Me’ director, Mahmood Ali-Balogun. Presentations were made by Zama Mkosi, Chief Executive Officer of South Africa’s National Film and Video Foundation, as well as representatives from the KwaZulu Natal Film Commission as both countries explored avenues for smoother collaborations.

It was a British takeover at the Genesis Deluxe Cinemas, as the British Council presented the Film Connections, a project that seeks to increase partnerships between Nigeria and the UK. Nadia Denton, who curated the films selected for the showcase, had the audience spellbound as she presented useful tips for filmmakers, preparing their strategies for hitting the international festivals circuit.

Victoria Thomas facilitated an interesting clinic on packaging and pitching African stories to the global film market, a topic no doubt close to the heart of many attendees, considering the recent strides Nollywood has been making. There was also a session by academics from the Universities of Portsmouth and Greenwich on recording sound and producing for television.

The British Council Film Connections was headlined by the documentary, WHITNEY, can I be me, the latest from acclaimed British director, Nick Broomfield. A tour de force on the life of beloved singer/superstar Whitney Houston who passed away under tragic circumstances in 2012, the documentary was warmly received in its first Nigerian screening. Other films in the Film Connections selection include BAFTA winner, ‘Under the Shadow’, ‘The Hard Stop’, ‘A Moving Image’, ‘Robot & Scarecrow’, ‘Tower XYZ’ and ‘Mrs Bolanle Benson’.

Over at the Afrinolly studios in Oregun, the acting, screenwriting and Canon DSLR classes continued with mentors; Hilda Dokubo, Victor Sanchez Aghahowa and Leke Alabi-Isama.

At Genesis Deluxe Cinemas, the ultraviolent Haitian short film, ‘Kafou’, a bloody, depiction of gang life and jungle justice in inner city streets got positive responses. So did the Moses Inwang directed Omotola Jalade Ekeinde star vehicle, ‘Alter Ego’. ‘The Whale Caller’ (South Africa), the big screen film adaptation of Zakes Mda’s fantastical novel also screened.

The cautionary tale, ‘Las Gidi Vice’, about a lady sexually molested by an acquaintance and feel good drama, ‘Armstrong, hoisted Nigeria’s flag in the shorts category at the Silverbird Cinemas, Victoria Island. Mozambique’s Oscar hopeful, ‘The Train of Salt and Water’ was screened alongside the France/Mali collaboration, ‘Wulu’, both films sharing a survival-in-spite-of-dismal-ci rcumstances theme running through them.

Mildred Okwo, Funlola Aofiyebi Raimi, Lala Akindoju, Omoye Uzamere Abba T. Makama and C.J Obasi are some of the famous faces who participated.

AFRIFF is an annual weeklong, all-encompassing world class showcase running from 29, October to 4, November 2017.

About 200 carefully curated feature lengths, shorts, documentaries and student films will be screened this year. The festival also encompasses talent development classes, industry workshops and inspiring creative discussions.

“I Will Contest In 2019 But Definitely Not For President” – Orji Kalu Declares

Featured Image

The former Governor of Abia State, Dr Orji Kalu, has distanced himself from campaign posters pasted along Airport Road, Abuja, with the inscription: “Vote Orji Kalu for President on the platform of the APC.’’

Kalu, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and a staunch supporter of President Muhammadu Buhari, disclosed that the posters were the handiwork of political jobbers and speculators, who are afraid of his unstoppable political feat.‎

In a statement issued in Abuja on Wednesday and signed by his Special Adviser, Kunle Oyewumi, Kalu insists that he is solidly behind the candidature of President Muhammadu Buhari if he so desires to run in 2019, adding that the North should be allowed to complete their eight years tenure.

He said, “after a two-week business trip to China, to my surprise on my way from Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport, Abuja, this morning, I sighted the malicious posters in my name with the caption: ‘Kalu for President.

“It is definitely the handiwork of some politicians who are either afraid of my political capacity or enemies of the present administration as I have continually maintained my support for Mr President.

“The action of these jobless politicians is a ploy to damage the robust relationship I have with President Buhari and the top hierarchy of the APC.‎

“Such political blackmail is not only disheartening but unhealthy for Nigeria’s growing democracy.

“While I call on the unsuspecting public, especially members of the APC, to disregard the vicious posters, I am also reaffirming my unflinching and unaltered support for Mr President.

“I will contest in 2019 by the grace of God but definitely not for President”, Kalu declared.

EFCC Resolves To Go After Human Traffickers

Featured Image

The acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu, has expressed the commission’s resolve to go after human traffickers.

Mr. Magu said this when a delegation from the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) visited him in Abuja.

The spokesman of the commission, Wilson Uwujaren, who reported the visit in a statement, said the NAPTIP delegation was led by its Director-General, Julie Okah-Donli.

Mr. Magu said the anti-graft agency had jurisdiction over human trafficking, which he said, was an offshoot of corruption.

“We are prepared to go after human traffickers, because we strongly believe that it is an aspect of corruption, and corruption is the greatest enemy of Nigeria.

“Corruption is the reason why young Nigerians are risking their lives walking through the Mediterranean up to Spain and other European countries in search of greener pasture.

“It is a very sad situation, and we must change the trend by ensuring that we join hands to fight corruption, as this is the only solution to the ills militating against our country’s development,” he said.

While calling for NAPTIP’s partnership in the fight against corruption, Mr. Magu assured Mrs. Okah-Donli of the EFCC’s support in combating the increasing cases of “organ harvesting” involving Nigerians.

“EFCC has an enormous task in the fight against corruption, and NAPTIP is also a stakeholder in the fight, so we also need your assistance and collaboration,” he said.

Mrs. Okah-Donli, who said the visit was part of the agency’s familiarisation efforts, used the opportunity to highlight NAPTIP’s strides in combating human trafficking in the country.

According to her, the agency has busted a number of criminal activities, recorded 331 convictions since 2004, with various other ongoing cases at advance stages in courts.

She added that NAPTIP had rescued many trafficked youths who were being rehabilitated and given a new lease of life.

Mrs. Okah-Donli said: “organ trafficking, which is now becoming a big business, is another form of human trafficking”.

She said many youth were being lured into it and they become afraid to come out to tell their stories.

The DG requested for assistance of the EFCC in confiscating assets of traffickers, and also in the area of training and developing its own academy.

Buhari Writes National Assembly, Reveals When He Would Present 2018 Budget

Featured Image

President Muhammadu Buhari has written the House of Representatives seeking to present the estimates of the 2018 budget to a joint session of the National Assembly on Tuesday, November 7.

Yesterday, a report had emerged that the president will present the 2018 budget estimates to a joint session of the National Assembly on Thursday, November 2.

Daily Trust quoted multiple sources at the presidency as saying that the Executive had completed arrangements for the presentation of the fiscal document to the National Assembly tomorrow.

However, in a letter read on the floor of the House by the Speaker, Yakubu Dogara, on Thursday, the president said he will present the budget at a joint session by 2 p.m on November 7.

Shouts Of ‘No! No!! No!!!’ rented the air after Dogara read the President’s letter.

The Speaker, however, reminded the lawmakers that they do not have constitutional powers to reject the presentation of the budget proposal by the President.

Last week Thursday, the Federal Executive Council (FEC) had, at its meeting presided over by President Buhari, approved the draft budget proposal.

The budget was supposed to have been presented to the National Assembly on Tuesday, October 31, according to the timetable given by the Minister for Budget and National Planning.

Klopp: Salah Has A Eye For Goal

Featured Image

Jurgen Klopp has hailed the goalscoring ability possessed by Liverpool attacking midfielder, Mohammed Salah.

Liverpool thrashed Maribor 7-0 in the reverse fixture and the minnows came into the math to defend.

The Reds had to wait till the second half to breakdown Maribor, with Salah opening the scoring.

“He is a very offensive midfielder, if not a striker,” Klopp said after the game.

“He likes these situations. He used his speed even in the small space, coming in behind. That was the problem in the first half, that we prepared the direction but we didn’t use the runs often enough.

“Roberto [Firmino] is clear that he needs to be there for the one-twos, for keeping the ball so we can push up.

“Ox [Chamberlain] and Mo offered these ways very often but then we didn’t play the ball. It’s about patience, but it’s as well about doing the right things with perfect timing because it’s easy to lose patience in a game like this.

“The end of the first half looked a little bit like this; second half, we were again there and decided the game pretty early.

“Second half, a fantastic goal; good timing, a good cross but good timing of Mo as well, coming into the box and being in the centre,” he added.
