The 2017 edition of the week-long Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF) ended in a spectacular way on Saturday, November 4, with the presentation of the Globe Awards at the Eko Hotel Convention Center, Lagos.

Unlike in 2016, when Nigerian films dominated most of the awards – with Izu Ojukuw’s ’76 dominating – this year saw the love shared around a bit more evenly.

Senegal’s Oscar hopeful Felicité, Mali’s Wulu and Zambia’s I Am Not a Witch were some of the biggest winners of the night.

It was a show of stars as Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, Kate Henshaw, Ramsey Nouah, Kunle Afolayan, Chioma Chukwuka-Akpotha, Kunle Idowu, Olu Jacobs, Bolanle Austen-Peters, Ini Dima Okojie, Linda Ejiofor, Omoye Uzamere, Nonso Bassey, Fred Amata among others all walked the red carpet.

The hosts for the night were Lala Akindoju and Serge Noukoue, founder of Nollywood Week Paris.

There were over three thousand entries which produced a thousand five hundred selections, the festival, a series of screenings, panel discussions, trainings and sessions for school kids.

(WATCH): Lamar Odom Collapses At Los Angeles Night Club

Featured Image

Former NBA player, Lamar Odom, is reportedly doing well after he had collapsed in the early hours of Sunday morning at a club in Los Angeles.

A video obtained by TMZ shows Odom slumped over and was being helped by security personnel at a club in West Hollywood.

It was learnt that Khloe Kardashian’s ex-husband, who is presently battling with substance abuse and alcohol, collapsed due to dehydration.

The person who shot the video told the online outfit that he saw Odom drinking for several hours before the incident.

In the video, the former LA Laker can be seen slumping to the floor in a V.I.P. booth as security guards rush to his side.

It was gathered that the incident was recorded around 2am at the club bootsy bellows.

His spokesperson, however, told E! News that the star is doing great and recovering from the incident.

“Lamar is doing well.”

“He was dehydrated and had been in an intense workout earlier in the day. It was also very hot in the club and he has seen his doctors and is doing great.”

Odom had suffered a near-death experience in 2015 when he was found unconscious at a Las Vegas brothel. He had two heart attacks and 12 strokes from that incident.

FG Reacts As Soldier Writes Buhari On Alleged Double Dealing In Battle Against Boko Haram

Featured Image

On behalf of the federal government, the Ministry of Defence, has finally released funds for the payment of operational allowances of thousands of Nigerian soldiers fighting insurgency across the country.

It includes several theaters of operation from Operations Lafiya Dole to Sharan Daji, Harbin Kunama and the recently concluded special security operations in the South-South and South West.

The disbursement comes at a time when an unknown soldier penned a letter to President Muhammadu Buhari lamenting the alleged corruption in the army and adding that “this is the third month in a row that they have been denied operations allowance.”

The letter, which is believed to have been written by a soldier currently attached to the Operation Lafiya Dole – the military anti-insurgency operation in the North-East – has gone viral on the social media.

The anonymous soldier, who claimed to be a private writing from Damaturu, Yobe State, alleged that the soldiers in the frontline were being poorly treated as a result of massive corruption in the army.

He lamented that they ‘rely on meagre salary for everything and that from battalion commanders, to Company and Sectors leaders, they are all in debt, because the salaries are not enough to sustain them at the battlefront and feeding thier families back at home.

‘It is a big shame that we have joined the Army to defend the civilians, yet we have to go to the civilians in town to borrow money to fend for ourselves at the battlefront.’ he said.

The soldier said he wrote the letter as a result of one Abdulrauf Aliyu, a private too, who was said to have deserted his base, when he sustained an injury.

The soldier noted that Aliyu did not desert the army, adding that the case of the injured soldier was one among many others who were injured at the battlefield and given little or no attention.

The letter reads: “Your Excellency, corruption in the army is real and it is killing us. While we expect to die in the hands of the enemy, we don’t expect to die in the hands of the army, due to corruption and criminal negligence.

“Just the other week, about 14 (I am not sure of the exact number) of our colleagues died in the hands of Boko Harram, who attacked the army camp. The circumstances surrounding their unnecessary death warrant a full investigation by his Excellency. Sir, you will be shocked of the outcome. The bodies of the slain heroes are still lying here in Damaturu.

“Your Excellency, this is the third month in a row that we have been denied of our operational allowance. We have to rely only on our meagre salary for everything. From battalion commanders to company and sector leaders, we are all in debt, because our salaries are not enough to sustain us at the battlefield let alone feeding our families back at home.

“It is a big shame that we have joined the army to defend the civilians, yet we have to go to the civilians in town to borrow money to fend for ourselves at the battlefield.

“It is said that the Federal Government spends about N14, 000 on each prisoner in Nigeria. Here, at the battlefront in Operation Lafiya Dole, the army spends about N600 per day on a soldier’s feeding, while in reality billions of naira is appropriated per year for this purpose. Your Excellency, we are treated like animals. Most of us are afraid to talk because of the dire consequence.

“As the Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces, your Excellency, kindly investigate. There is corruption in the army. Soldiers are needlessly dying.”

Meanwhile, the Director, Army Public Relations, Brig. Gen. Sani Usman, on Sunday, said that the army would issue a statement on the allegations, but the statement had yet to come as of press time.

“I will react,” he simply said.

Claude Makelele Leaves Role At Swansea To Become K.A.S Eupen Manager

Featured Image

Claude Makelele has left his role as assistant coach at Swansea to become head coach of Belgian side K.A.S Eupen.

Claude Makele joined Paul Clement’s coaching staff in January with the pair reuniting after they had worked alongside each other under Carol Ancelotti at Paris Saint-German.

He now takes over an Eupen side which is currently bottom of Belgian’s top flight, having won two of their opening 14 games. It will be the 44-year-old’s second stint as a manager following a five-and-a-half month spell in charge of French club Bastia in 2014.

The former midfield enforcer, who was so successful in his duties that the defensive midfield role was regularly named after him, had been a popular figure among the Swansea squad, who had appreciated his man-management qualities and the wealth of knowledge from an illustrious playing career.

A Swansea City statement read: “Claude Makelele has left his role as assistant coach at Swansea City to become head coach of Belgian top-flight club K.A.S Eupen.

“The Frenchman joined Paul Clement’s coaching staff in January with the pair reuniting after they had worked alongside each other under Carol Ancelotti at Paris Saint-German.

“Makelele played a part in the Swans’ great escape from relegation last season, with Clement’s side picking up 28 points from their remaining 19 games to eventually finish 15th in the Premier League.

“He takes over an Eupen side which is currently bottom of Belgian’s top flight, having won two of their opening 14 games. Last weekend, they drew 4-4 at fourth-placed Sint-Truiden thanks to two last-gasp goals.

“It will be the 44-year-old’s second stint as a manager following a five-and-a-half month spell in charge of French club Bastia in 2014.

“Everyone at Swansea City would like to thank Claude for his contribution to the club, and wish him well in his career.”

Oxlade-Chamberlain: Salah Is In Form

Featured Image

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has hailed Mohamed Salah’s outstanding form and impeccable goalscoring run.

The Egypt international scored a brace in the 4-1 win over West Ham, taking his tally to seven in the EPL.

Oxlade-Chamberlain is quite impressed with Salah’s output in front of goal, hailing his 12 goals across all competitions.

“But if you speak to Mo, he’s not carried away, he doesn’t get too excited and he wants to keep doing it. It is credit to him, that’s the kind of guy he is – he wants to always achieve more.

“We need that in the team. So hopefully he can keep doing what he’s been doing and adding the goals.

“But it’s important that all of us around him support with goals as well because there might be a time when he has a few games where he doesn’t score, and we’ve all got to be able to chip in. Mo has been on fire and I hope he can continue that way.”

There Was Never A Doubt About Signing Mohamed Salah – Jurgen Klopp

Featured Image

Jurgen Klopp has claimed that Liverpool decided to sign Mohamed Salah from a selection of 20 players during the summer transfer window.

Liverpool paid £34m to sign Mohamed Salah from Roma and he has gone on to score 12 goals in 17 appearances in all competitions.

However, Klopp has insisted that no-one at the club ever had any doubts about the 25-year-old, who has helped Liverpool reach fifth place in the standings this season.

The 50-year-old told the club’s official website: “We were sure he can help us. Michael Edwards, Dave Fallows and Barry [Hunter], they were really in my ear and were on it: ‘Come on, come on, Mo Salah, he’s the solution’.

“When you have 20 players on the table, different players, it’s difficult to make an early decision, but we all were convinced about it so could make the early decision so we could really get him. He’s a fantastic person, a nice lad and a really good football player.

“I didn’t think if he can score 12 goals or whatever in 17 games [but] I hope he’s not finished now. That would be nice, if we talk after the season about different numbers – and both numbers should be much higher.”

West Ham Sack Manager Slaven Bilic, Set To Appoint David Moyes

Featured Image

West Ham have sacked Slaven Bilic as manager

West Ham have found themselves in the relegation zone following Saturday’s 4-1 defeat by Liverpool and according to reports barring a breakdown in negotiations, David Moyes will take over.

West Ham are offering him a deal until the end of the season, at which point Moyes’s future would be reviewed.

West Ham said in a statement: “West Ham United can confirm that Slaven Bilic has today left his position with the Club.

“The chairmen and board of West Ham United would like to place on record their thanks and gratitude to Slaven and his team for their services over the past two and a half years, but believe a change is now necessary in order for the club to move forward positively and in line with their ambition.

“West Ham United can confirm that Bilic’s coaching assistants Nikola Jurcevic, Edin Terzic, Julian Dicks and Miljenko Rak have also left the club with immediate effect.

“The club’s search for a new manager to take West Ham United forward is underway and an announcement regarding Bilic’s successor is expected to be made over the coming days.”

Slaven Bilic took over as West Ham manager in 2015 and finished seventh in his first campaign, then 11th last season. His team have managed only two wins from their first 11 league games this season and the heavy defeat by Liverpool followed a 3-0 reverse against Brighton in their previous home match.

Dele Alli Will Be Fit For North London Derby – Mauricio Pochettino

Featured Image

Mauricio Pochettino has confirmed that Dele Alli will be fit for the North London derby against Arsenal after the international break.

Dele Alli missed Sunday’s 1-0 win over Crystal Palace at Wembley due to a hamstring injury.

Pochettino has insisted that it is not a serious injury, though, and expects the 21-year-old to be fully fit in time for Tottenham’s trip to the Emirates Stadium on November 18.

“Dele Alli against Manchester United finished the game feeling his posterior tendon, close to the hamstring, and then played 90 minutes against Real Madrid,” he told reporters.

“It’s a very, very, very small thing. It was a massive risk (to play him) again. We’re sure he’ll be ready for Arsenal (after the international break). We hope he’s going well in the next few weeks and will be available.”

I’m Not Interested In The AC Milan Job – Antonio Conte

Antonio Conte has played down speculation that he could take over AC Milan next season

Antonio Conte was linked with a move to Milan in the summer, when he spoke openly about how he had missed his family and struggled to settle in his first season in London.

Those rumours have flared up again recently with current Milan coach Vincenzo Montella under pressure due to unsatisfactory results

When asked to comment on the rumours by Sky Sport Italia following Chelsea’s 1-0 win over Manchester United on Sunday, Conte stated he did not want to think about such speculation.

“Oh come on, forget it,” he said. “Let’s try to remain focused because, as I’ve said, between now and the end of the year, it’s going to be a difficult path to follow in every sense because, look, every single day another story and another thing comes out, and they like this kind of situation here.

“I’m so focused on Chelsea — I’ve got to do the best I can for Chelsea. I know we’ve got a very hard, intense season ahead, but if we have the spirit and the enthusiasm that we’ve seen today, we’ll try to fight against everything and against everybody.”p

Getting Buhari Out In 2019 Is Not Enough

Getting Buhari Out In 2019 Is Not Enough – Fisayo Soyombo

CLICK here to read more opinion articles

There are numerous disgruntled Muhammadu Buhari supporters straddling the social media space. Worried by a series of controversies in a government they placed high hopes in, many of Buhari’s supporters are penitent.

This piece was written by Fisayo Soyombo. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

“Throwback to when I used my bike to campaign for Buhari preaching change. God forgive me,” one named ‘Hur’ recently wrote on social networking site Twitter, accompanied by teary emoticons.

Did people like Hur really have a choice in 2015?

The Jonathan years

It was always clear to the neutrals that Buhari was not Nigeria’s best-possible presidential proposition in 2015. But weighing him against Goodluck Jonathan, he was the perceptibly better choice. Two disappointing Buhari years are not enough to exorcise the ghost of the Jonathan years. A quick rundown, for those who have forgotten.

What collective progress would Nigeria have made under a man who personalized and institutionalized corruption? This was a man, who, speaking of his aversion to assets declaration for public officials, as mandated by the Code of Conduct Bureau, said: “The issue of public asset declaration is a matter of personal principle. That is the way I see it, and I don’t give a damn about it, even if you criticise me from heaven.” That was in 2012.

Two years late, at a presidential media chat, he made a woeful attempt to separate corruption from stealing, saying: “Over 70 percent of what is called corruption, even by EFCC and other anti-corruption agencies, is not corruption but common stealing.”

Under Jonathan, common stealing was the norm — left, right and centre. It was so bad that a returning minister, seeing the scale of looting all over the place, would say in private circles: “I have come not come to Abuja this time around to count the bridges; I must get my share.”

Of the numerous corruption cases under his watch, one was particularly problematic for Jonathan. Stella Oduah, his Aviation Minister, was found guilty of procedural breaches in the purchase of two bulletproof cars for $1.6m — about $1.2m more than the market price. Still, Oduah prospered under Jonathan and in fact played a big role in his 2015 campaign; he only dispensed with her when he sensed her baggage could hurt his reelection bid.

Let’s not even talk about Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, the Bayelsa ex-governor convicted for multi-million-pound corruption who disguised as a woman to jump bail in the UK but was eventually granted state pardon by Jonathan. In that administration, the nation’s treasury was national cake and anyone bold enough to approach it with a knife was free to have his cut! That is why there is nothing to show for the periods in his reign when crude oil prices were favourable; Buhari nevertheless ended up inheriting an economy in tatters, many states unable to pay workers’ salary.

How can we forget Jonathan’s handling of the Boko Haram insurgency? For so long, he viewed it as a plot of the opposition to hunt him down. And the Chibok girls’ abduction? As former President Olusegun Obasanjo would eventually reveal, Jonathan, for 18 days after the kidnap, insisted that no abduction took place. By the time he finally accepted he had the largest-scale abduction since the start of the insurgency on his hands, the girls’ captors were well and truly beyond overhauling.

That wasn’t just an odd error of judgement; it was the archetypal Jonathan. Remember when more than 80 people were bombed to death in Nyanya, Abuja, in April 2014? Two days later, the President was dancing away at a PDP rally in Kano. And only a day after at least 48 were killed in a blast in Potiskum in November 2014, Jonathan organised a colourful ceremony to announce his reelection ambition. What about parents of the abducted Chibok girls? The President refused to meet with them — until Malala Yousafzai, a 17-year-old, came here to beg him. Security of lives is one the simplest responsibilities of a government. And when a government cannot guarantee this (and its head literally rubs it in), thereby leaving the people in a perpetual state of panic, such President deserves to be shown the exit door.

It will be déjà vu in 2019

Why is it so important to harp on the talking points of an election that was staged two years ago? Because we’re inevitably going to find ourselves in a similar situation in 2019.

Like the litany of unfulfilled promises under Jonathan, Buhari has underwhelmed in that office. He promised to fight corruption but he didn’t tell us he would only fight it in the camp of his personal and political enemies; he didn’t tell us his cabinet members were immune from the much-vaunted anti-corruption campaign, that the war would be restricted to the PDP and the Jonathan regime. We didn’t expect that the economy would regress under his watch or that the administration would be so disjointed that government agencies would overtly and covertly antagonise one another. We didn’t expect that the regime of Buhari, a former military strongman, would be hijacked by a cabal.

Buhari has brought a new dimension to the people’s dissatisfaction with governance. To his credit, Jonathan assembled a fairly technocratic cabinet but Buhari’s is inferior by a distance. Buhari made enormous progress with limiting the Boko Haram damage but cronyism and ethnocentrism are some of the hallmarks of his reign. We chased Jonathan away and got rid of his problems; with Buhari, it’s fresh man, fresh problems.

The rising disillusionment with the current administration means Buhari’s long-time and newfound haters will likely be fixated on getting rid of him in 2019 — not necessarily finding the best possible replacement. That would mean we haven’t learnt a thing from the desperation to eject Jonathan and the disappointment of electing Buhari. It would also mean that rather than upgrade our political leadership from one election cycle to another, we’re only stuck in the vicious cycle of unseating one underwhelming government to make room for another.

Looking ahead to 2023

For all the attention that the 2019 election has been recently generating, I’m struggling to see how it can become a watershed in Nigeria’s political history. Any serious challenge to Buhari’s reign will likely come from the PDP — a party still in tatters more than two years after losing power.

All those who have so far shown interest in the PDP ticket are the usual suspects — regular faces that have graced the political scene for years or sometimes decade; same old, same old! As it stands, none of the other registered parties is strong enough to gatecrash the PDP-APC hegemony. In 2019, the options will be either returning to a messy way of old or sticking with the sticky patch of now. Neither is an attractive prospect. We’ll be torn between the devil and the deep blue sea, like we were in 2015.

This is why, ahead of 2023, the electorate need to gravitate towards selection rather than election. There is an urgent need for a non-partisan movement to identify a genuine presidential material among us, and subsequently raise a partisan platform with which the selected material can challenge the PDP or APC. It is a long-term project, and it is far more difficult to achieve in reality than it looks on paper. But something is no longer difficult to see: we can no longer be satisfied with picking one of the two candidates thrown at us by the APC and PDP. It’s time we picked our candidate and threw it at them!

PSG defender Thomas Meunier says he turned down a deadline day move to Chelsea.

Thomas Meunier was given the chance to link up with international team-mates Thibaut Courtois, Eden Hazard and Michy Batshuayi but chose to stay in Paris.

He told Belgian TV: “I was expecting PSG to sign another right-back, but didn’t foresee them getting Dani Alves. I didn’t know what to think. Was I going to remain on the subs’ bench all the time?

“I could have left for Chelsea on the final day of the transfer window. But I didn’t want to join them. I am happy at PSG and I don’t want to leave.”

Sean “Diddy” Combs Changes His Name Yet Again To “Love”

Featured Image

Popular US artist Sean Combs — or, the artist formerly known as Diddy, Puffy, Puff Daddy, etc. — on Saturday announced that he he’s changing his name yet again; that he’ll be using exclusively from here on out: Love, a.k.a. Brother Love.

‘I decided to change my name again!’ he told his fans social media on Saturday, which turned out to be his 48th birthday.

“I know it’s risky because it could come off as corny to some people,” he said. “So my new name is Love, aka Brother Love. I will not be answering to Puffy, Diddy, Puff Daddy, or any of my other monikers.” He explained that he’s Love now because “I’m just not who I am before. I’m something different.” He tagged his excited post: ‘Takedat’.

Born in 1969, the son of a teaching assistant and murdered father was at birth named the unremarkable Sean John Combs.

But in 1997 he grew tired of being plain old Sean – opting instead for the name by which the then record producer first found fame – Puff Daddy.

Then he was P. Diddy, only to drop the P five years later to become “Diddy,” which was later expanded to encompass group Diddy — Dirty Money. And in 2014, he said he wanted to be known as Puff Daddy again.

The media mogul, 48, said the name change was inspired by his evolving persona.

Police Chief Files N5bn Libel Suit Against Senator Misau

Featured Image

Nigeria’s Inspector General of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Idris, has filed a libel suit against the Senator representing Bauchi Central Senatorial District, Hamman Misau, demanding N5bn as compensation for alleged defamation, The Punch reports.

The suit is coming on the back of an earlier preferred criminal charges slammed on the senator by the Federal Government, through the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation, for allegedly spreading “injurious falsehood” against the IGP and the Nigeria Police Force.

Both the civil case filed by the IGP himself and the criminal charges instituted by the AGF office stemmed from allegations of corruption and unethical practices leveled by Misau against the IGP in the electronic and print media.

While the civil case has been assigned to Justice Jude Okeke of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, the criminal case is before the Chief Judge of the court, Justice Ishaq Bello.

In the suit filed by his counsel, Marcel Oru, the IGP prayed the court to award cumulative aggravated and exemplary damages of N5bn against the lawmaker.

Meanwhile, Justice Okeke has fixed for November 13, 2017 for hearing in the case.

The police chief had on Friday confirmed his readiness to appear before the Senate ad-hoc committee investigating him over allegations of corruption.

Speaking with State House Correspondents after a closed-door meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, Idris said his appearance at the National Assembly on Tuesday would be subjected to approval from his legal team.

“These are legal issues, we are discussing with our legal team, obviously if there is need we are going to appear. For the sake of having respect for the Senate, I will appear before them,” he had said.

This is after Misau had recently accused him of misappropriating the sum of N7.2bn in the 2016 budget, nepotism and sexual alliances with female officers.

Against this backdrop, he was invited by the senate ad-hoc committee but he failed to honour the summon.

Leicester City Turned Down Barcelona’s Approach For Riyad Mahrez

Featured Image

Barcelona attempted to sign Riyad Mahrez from Leicester City over the summer, Roma’s director of football has revealed.

Roma chief Monchi said that the Spanish giants rivalled his side for the Algeria international’s signature during the last transfer window.

“We wanted a left-footed winger to replace Mohamed Salah and put it all on Mahrez, but the only reason he didn’t come was because the club wouldn’t sell,” The Mirror quotes the Roma chief as saying.

“It’s not an excuse, they said no to Barcelona too.”

Leicester were able to retain Mahrez’s services as none of his suitors were able to match the Foxes’ £50m valuation.
