Nigeria Signs Financial Agreement For Lagos-Abidjan Highway

Featured Image

The Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, has disclosed that the federal government has signed a financial agreement for the execution of Lagos-Abidjan highway.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Olusegun Ogunkayode, a Senior Information Officer in the ministry, disclosed this in a statement in Abuja on Wednesday.

The statement quoted Mr. Fashola as making the disclosure at the ninth Steering Committee and Experts Meeting of the Lagos-Abidjan Corridor Highway Development Programme.

According to him, the signing of the financial agreement was a demonstration of the federal government’s commitment to the realisation of the project.

The minister said that road development was crucial to the economic growth of any nation, adding that the meeting was important considering the need for West African countries to join the league of developed nations.

According to him, West African countries must emulate South American and Asia countries, who have used road development to drive their economies.

Mr. Fashola said that the Lagos-Abidjan corridor would propel rapid integration of the region, boost commercial activities, improve social development, create employment windows and reduce social vices among the member states.

Nigeria Is The Federal Republic Of Rumour Mongering – Chude Jideonwo

CLICK here to read more opinion articles

It was my baptism of fire into the workings of Nigerian governance.

Our firm had just begun communication consulting for government departments and agencies about six years earlier, and this was a very important client. Where I thought my work would centre on strategic planning and execution, it turned out much of it would instead be focused on massaging egos, cooling passions and dismissing innuendo.

This piece was written by Chude Jideonwo. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

In a rapid-fire email thread, another innuendo landed one afternoon in 2012. A story by an investigative media outlet had unfairly attacked the client, even though its material facts were not exactly wrong. As I had come to expect, the thread collapsed into a session of finger pointing as to external enemies, paid by opponents, to discredit this government officer.

Because our work has cut across many intersections including media and civil society, I knew this was not the case, and I said so: this feature was the result of a multi-month partnership between various bodies for a different goal having nothing to do with the client.

I really should have kept my mouth shut, because within an hour, I was suddenly at the centre of the attack, accused of being part of this conspiracy and, it was implied, being a mole not fully committed to protecting my client.

This was surreal, but only at the time. The higher up I have worked with the Nigerian government and political circles over the past half-decade, the worse I have seen and heard.

Nigeria runs on rumours. It runs on suppositions, innuendos, assumptions and empty accusations. This is quite the epidemic. One so ingrained every president since democracy returned in 1999 has accused an inchoate “them” of sabotaging the efforts and successes of governments and individuals in government. All of this often flung at supposed opponents without fact, without the appearance of evidence, and without the pretense, even, of investigation.

I have sat in on complex meetings where we have wasted time identifying enemies who must have “planted” a story in the media, or disparaging an endless parade of figures for sponsoring critical social media commentary rather than focus on accepting responsibility for error, shoring up weaknesses and engaging strategically. In many of those cases, I knew for sure that the problem was nothing more than a badly trained journalist, a lazy editor or, actually, the absence of an editor entirely.

But in a country where everyone thinks everyone else is paying the media, or has been paid to speak, to criticize, to correct, to suggest, speaking this simple truth can become a hazard.

I am after all still traumatized by the fact that many insist, completely without evidence of any sort, because it does not exist, that a prominent south-west politician sponsored the historic Occupy Nigeria protests when I am aware, having sat in myriad planning meetings, that this was, in fact, a spontaneous gathering self-funded by several passionate groups, to revolt against an insensitive government. But the appearance of a handful of opposition politicians was enough to send the gossip mill buzzing.

Nigeria is a country that doesn’t respect data. We have scant regard for evidence, and actively enjoy the absence of rigour. We are very comfortable tossing off accusations, questioning motives, attacking intentions, and engaging in a merry go round of assumptions rather than doing the hard work of strategic thought and engagement.

This is surely why, in responding to baseless accusations that the Nigerian president asked the World Bank to focus solely on development in the North East of Nigeria, the presidential spokesman made a mountain of a molehill by attacking “ethnic champions” supposedly sponsored by enemies of the government, where it was simply a matter of idle Twitter hands searching for attention.

It is in this way that I have seen several players in Nigeria’s political establishment turn simple problems into major crises.

Often, when Nigerians suspect Machiavellian manipulation in the statements and actions of governments, there is often nothing but the most basic incompetence loudly beating its chest. In my country, one must resist often the temptation of attributing malice where simple stupidity will suffice.

This is a real cultural problem, and not just in government. Indeed, stories of corporate clients chasing shadows when confronting media will require another piece of its own.

How does the country solve a problem that eats so deep into our body politic that it affects the formulation of policy, the assessment of feedback, the building of coalitions, and the sustainability of visions?

The first part of the answer is simple: a cultural overhaul that begins to prize data over assumption, research over opinion, and rigour over instinct. This cultural overhaul should filter from top to bottom and should begin to overturn (and dis-incentivize) the foundations of secrecy, opacity and the disrespect for empiricism that defines the leadership of the country across sectors. We need to take seriously our responsibility to shine the light of knowledge and evidence across Nigerian institutions.

Now, how precisely will we be able to overhaul an entrenched 60-year culture that has hollowed out the soul of a nation, and eaten into its capacity for self-reflection?

Ah yes, you just arrived at the second part of the answer.

David Umahi: PDP Governor Endorses Buhari For Second Term In 2019

Featured Image

Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi State has declared that he wants President Muhammadu Buhari to seek re-election in 2019.

Governor Umahi, who is also a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), told State House Correspondents on Thursday after meeting with the President at the Presidential Villa that it is normal for an elected official to seek re-election.

This is just as he said he would also wish to go for a second term.

His words: “Any first term governor would want to go for a second term. And if what you wish yourself, you should be honest enough to wish another person the same.”

“Since Mr President is doing his first term and I am doing my first term, it’s my wish to re-contest and I will as well wish the president the same to re-contest.”

On the visit of Buhari to Ebonyi next week, Umahi said the people of the state are “fully prepared” to receive the president.

It is understood that the President would commission some projects carried out by his administration during the visit, including roads and flyovers.

The governor continued: “There are quite a lot of projects that we have executed within these past two and the half years. We have three numbers of twin flyovers that are built across the African Tran Sahara Road running from Enugu to Cameroon passing through Ebonyi state, so we have to build three twin flyovers to decongest traffic on that road, each of the twin flyovers is 700-metre length.

“We have completed two and the third one is 80 percent done, Mr President will commission the two. We also have a mall, what we call Ebonyi mall that is modelled after the famous Dubai mall.

“And we intend for the president to lay a foundation stone of that mall which we will like Mr President to commission within the next 12 months.”

Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State has imposed an emergency 24 hours curfew on five local government areas of the state.

The five affected LGAs are; Adavi, Ajaokuta, Okene, Okehi and Ogori/Magongo and are all in the central senatorial axis of the state.

There was not a specific reason for the urgent development.

The statement reads a part, “This is a notice of a 24-hour curfew imposed on residents of the 5 Local Government Areas of Central Senatorial District beginning from midnight (already commenced). This curfew will last for 24 hours and it is absolute. No movement whatsoever shall be allowed.

“All residents of Adavi, Ajaokuta, Okehi, Okene, Ogori/Magongo Local Government Areas are advised to comply by this directive as anyone who runs foul would have themselves to blame.

It is understood that in the recent one month, insecurity had been on the rise in the area; culminating in the burning of police station, killing of security men and last week Wednesday assassination of a labour leader, Abdulmumini Yakub.

Troost-Ekong: Playing For Eagles Has Changed My Life

Featured Image

Williams Troost-Ekong has revealed that playing for the Super Eagles team has changed his life.

The centre back has featured for Nigeria since 2015, and has not looked back since then, he played all the matches for the Super Eagles, as they secured World Cup qualification.

Troost-Ekong, 24, has revealed his excitement at the Super Eagle’s qualification and wants a win against Algeria in their upcoming friendlies.

“It is a big achievement for Nigeria and for me to qualify for the World Cup,” Troost-Ekong told NFF website.

“It has encouraged me to continue to step up my game in preparation for the World Cup, and of course, at the tournament itself.
“We should aim to finish our World Cup qualifying campaign unbeaten and again use this as a game to improve as a team.

“I am excited to be competing against the very best in the world and probably my generation is something to look forward to. But that level of respect is where the Super Eagles should be too, so this is a chance for us to test ourselves.

“The experience garnered playing for the Super Eagles has been life-changing for me. Facing some of the best forwards in Africa, whilst having to perform and deliver for such a football-loving nation like Nigeria is a pressure that improves you as a player.

“I enjoy being with the team, and working with quality players. Playing alongside someone like Leon Balogun with his quality has definitely helped, but I would feel just as comfortable playing next to anyone now.”

BankyW Successfully Completes 3rd Skin Cancer Tumors Surgery (Photos)

Featured Image

BankyW has revealed through his Instagram page how he survived 3rd surgery attempt to remove a rare strain of skin cancer tumours found in the shoulder area of his skin.

Sharing photos of the scars from the surgery and revealing that the cancer resurfaced after 10 years, the RnB singer who is now back on his feet after a successful operation wrote;

BankyW recovers from successful 3rd surgery he had on a rare strain of skin cancer tumors found in his shoulder (photos)

A wise man once said this: “Scars. A sign that you had been hurt. A sign that you had been healed.” Scroll through the pictures to see mine.

I’m sharing these because they’re proof of what God has brought me through. And because somewhere out there, I know there’s someone who needs to hear this.

For those who’ve been wondering why I’ve been away so long..I had my 3rd surgery on a rare strain of skin cancer tumours in my shoulder last month. The first 2 times were over 10 yrs ago, then it recently resurfaced. But this isn’t a sad story as much as it is a reminder, and a testimony.
A reminder that you should never take life for granted. You only get 1 shot. Some people went to sleep and never woke up. Many others have lost the battle to cancer and other illnesses. Many are still fighting. U never know when your time will be up so don’t waste another minute. It’s also a testimony about the goodness of God. I think I had to go through this again to remember how merciful God is to me; Lord knows I don’t deserve it but He saves me time and again anyway. I keep saying I need to write a book. I really, really do.

The past few weeks of recovery have been tough, but beautiful. I’m finally back on my feet, feeling stronger and ready to get back to life. I’m especially thankful to my Nurse Susu for loving me and being by my side every step of the way – I don’t deserve U ??, my parents & siblings, in-laws & close friends for the love, support and prayers, my Pastors – Pastor Tony Rapu & Pastor Del Balogun of TPH, Pastor Taiwo Odukoya and Pastor Bayo Adeyokunnu – for constantly praying with and for me. And of course to Dr Wodajo & Dr Miralli & their teams – who God used to operate on me successfully.

I’m thankful for life, provision and healing. Pls dont feel bad, or msg me with any worries.. God has done it, just thank Him for me.
The pain will eventually go away but the scar won’t – and I’m glad because it’s a reminder to me of what God has done, and evidence to you of what He CAN do. I’m not stronger or better than anyone. I’m just a living testimony that no matter what u face, U can survive & thrive, by God’s grace.

Jean Michael Seri Insists He’s Now Committed To Nice After Failed Move To Barcelona

Featured Image

Jean Michael Seri has reiterated his commitment to Nice after his summer move to Barcelona collapsed.

Jean Michael Seri blasted the Ligue 1 club when the deal collapsed but seems to have gained a different perspective in realising that he would not be guaranteed first-team football with Barca.

“At Nice I am loved, but in Barcelona, I might not have been guaranteed first-team football,” he said.

“This is the club I want to be at and not out of spite, I am very happy here.”

I don’t really want to remember everything that happened,” he told France Football. “There was a difficult period when I was with the national team. The market closed when I was in Gabon.

“I was focused on the games with my national team and when I returned to Nice I left it all to one side. For me, it’s all forgotten. I turned the page and thought about the game against Monaco.”

The Ivory Coast midfielder admitted that “it affected me, but now I look back with perspective. I focused on what I know, playing football. There was no other solution than to get back playing.

“Anything else wouldn’t have served for anything. I admit it wasn’t easy. But now there’s nothing in my head about all that. I think about the future — there are a lot of good things to do.”

Reps Pass Bill On Climate Change

Featured Image

The House of Representatives on Wednesday passed a bill to provide a legal framework for mainstreaming of climate change responses and actions into government policy formulation and implementation.

The bill also proposed the establishment of a council to coordinate climate change governance as well as support the adaptation and mitigation of the adverse effects of climate change in the country.

Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, the sponsor of the bill, Sam Onuigbo (Abia-PDP), said that the need for a strong national institution to address the effects of climate change compelled him to come up with the bill.

Onuigbo further added that the absence of a law on issues of climate change has scared investors from investing in the country.

He said: “Today, there is no law on climate change, all we have are policies and that has been a serious setback for the country as far as climate actions are concerned.

“Climate change is a global issue that cuts across the world and that is what informed the move of the United Nations’ convention on climate change.

“But back home, there is no law both at the national and sub-national levels and that has necessitated this bill.

“The early coming into force of the 2015 Paris Climate agreement reinforced the necessity of a climate change legislation.

“It will facilitate the domestication of the agreement and enable Nigeria to effectively implement its commitments, particularly the emission reductions target.’’

Mr. Onuigbo further said that absence of a law that prescribed legal obligation for compliance with elements of national climate policy and all other climate-related initiatives and programmes had also inhibited climate change management in the country.

“But this bill will provide a framework for a federal budget appropriation process that institutionalises transparency and accountability of climate related sources, including international climate finance,” he said.

The lawmaker added that the bill intended to balance institutions and approaches responsible in addressing climate challenges across economic sectors and through public and private participation.

Eden Hazard Speaks About The Possibility Of Working With Zinedine Zidane And Jose Mourinho

Featured Image

Eden Hazard has admitted that it would be “a dream” to play under Zinedine Zidane at Real Madrid.

Speaking to Belgian media this week, Eden Hazard revealed his admiration for Zidane and also downplayed reports that he had been snubbed by ex-Blues boss Jose Mourinho after his side beat Manchester United last weekend.

“Zidane would be a dream to have as a coach, he was my idol when I was little,” he told RTL TVI. “I have a lot of respect for him.

“And playing under Jose Mourinho [again] would not bother me.”

“At this time, though, I’m happy at Chelsea. I still have a lot of things to do at Chelsea, and I’m focused on Chelsea.”

Alexis Sanchez And Mesut Ozil Would Have Been Shown The Door During My Era At Arsenal – Lee Dixon

Featured Image

Arsenal legend Lee Dixon insists Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil would have been “shown the door” if they had played in the Arsenal teams of his era.

Both players’ deals expire in the summer, meaning they could leave Arsenal for free at the end of the season.

Sanchez’s Arsenal future has long been in doubt and the Chile international was part of a surprise attempt at a swap deal with Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling in the final week of the summer transfer window.

“We’d have just shown them the door,” said Lee Dixon. “If you don’t want to play, then go. That’s not changed.

“If a player doesn’t want to play for you: it happened with Michael Thomas 18 months after he scored [the title-winning goal against Liverpool] in ’89, he was in dispute with the club or George about money. He ended up going in similar circumstances and signing with Liverpool.”

‘It’s no different. If a player doesn’t want to stay somewhere, yes, agents and players manipulate situations – and clubs do, in order to get the best deal for the parties concerned – but in general, if you don’t want to go there, and you don’t want to stay, then you will be ousted from the environment and dressing room pretty quickly.

‘Players work out whether you want to be there or not, and certainly fans do when they see your performances on the pitch.’

Buhari Yet To Use Aso Rock Office 81 Days After | Aide Claims “He Was Bewitched”

Featured Image

It is now 81 days since Nigeria’s President, Muhammadu Buhari, returned to the country from the United Kingdom – where he went for medical vacation – and he is still yet to use his office in the Aso Rock Villa, Abuja.

But the Presidency had earlier said that the situation has not in any way hindered the President from performing his duties as the supreme leader of Africa’s most powerful nation.

Buhari, who had departed Nigeria on May 7 for another round of medical treatment in London for an undisclosed ailment, had arrived the country on August 19 to a wild jubilation from Nigerians after spending over 103 days in the UK.

The Rats Are Not To Blame

Upon arrival, the President, however, refused to commence official assignments on Monday, August 21, from his desk; preferring to use an auxiliary office attached to his residence.

The development generated worries and curiosity among Nigerians, with some expressing fear that the President had not recuperated enough to resume work.

In a bid to quell the curiosity, the Presidency later issued a statement explaining that Mr. Buhari was staying away from the office due to ongoing repair works.

Femi Adesina, the presidential spokesperson, at that time, said: “The regular office needs some renovation because the 103 days of absence” caused “some deterioration”.

Another of Mr. Buhari’s media aides, Garba Shehu, said the development became necessary due to the devastation done to the office by rodents during his long period of absence – an excuse Nigerians largely found amusing.

“Following the three months period of disuse, rodents have caused a lot of damage to the furniture and the air conditioning units,” Mr. Shehu had said.

Although he didn’t confirm when the renovation would be completed, the presidential spokesperson had stated that the maintenance company had been asked to speed up its pace of work.

However, it is now 81 days after the president resumed work but he is still said to be operating from outside of his official seat.

Speaking to Premium Times on the matter, sources in the presidency have blamed the development on spiritual reasons, adding that Buhari’s absence from his office can not be unconnected to his tortuous health challenges.

The insiders revealed that the spiritualists – who worked on the president’s condition – advised against his use of the office.

“You know the man was actually bewitched. All these rumours about this or that illness are just guess works. No one was sure, not even the doctors,” said a close aide of Mr. Buhari who preferred anonymity.

“The trip to London in May was unscheduled and all the checks done, including in Germany, revealed nothing. We had to resort to prayers,” he said.

The source further added that Mr. Buhari’s office and other parts of the villa are “undergoing spiritual cleansing to avert any recurrence in the future”.

Mikel Obi Reveals How He Turned Down A Briefcase Of $70,000 Before Signing For Chelsea

Featured Image

Super Eagles captain Mikel Obi has revealed an anonymous agent representing an unnamed club tried to steal a march on his rivals by persuading him to sign with a briefcase full of cash.

Mikel Obi was the subject of strong interest from a host of European powerhouses after impressing for Nigeria at the U17 World Cup, and Mikel has admitted he turned down $70,000 (£53,000).

Scouts from Arsenal, Real Madrid and Barcelona were all playing particular attention to the midfielder but Premier League sides Manchester United and Chelsea were his strongest admirers.

“I had agents promising me everything,” the 30-year-old has told The Sun. “One approached me in the hotel with a briefcase full of cash.

“I can’t remember what club he claimed to represent – but I do remember the briefcase. It was crammed with $70,000 and he offered me that to sign some contract before adding: ‘Sign here and you’ll get a lot more’.”

“I was tempted. I’d never seen so much money but I told the Nigerian FA secretary who was looking after me.

“He told me to ignore this agent but promised I would join the best club. After the tournament, I went home to my family and then saw the secretary again in Abuja.

“That’s when he told me: ‘You’re going to United. They want you and you’re leaving tomorrow’. My dad was so happy but mum was crying because I was moving abroad at such a young age.”

Mikel went on to make 374 appearances for Chelsea, winning two Premier League titles, four FA Cups, One Champions League trophy and one Europa League trophy.
