Mugabe, The West, And A Coup

Mugabe, the West, and a Coup, By Pius Adesanmi

Military coup has never been a solution to anything. Tanks in the public sphere will always be a pox on civilisation. I condemn the coup-not-coup-apparent-coup in Zimbabwe.

This piece was written by Pius Adesanmi. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

Yes, Mugabe and Gucci Grace are an embarrassment to themselves, to Zimbabwe, and to Africa.

In Zimbabwe: Grace Is Mugabe’s Headache

However, we should watch the actions of those celebrating this military coup the loudest. The Western media has been behaving like a kid in a chocolate store today. The West has a pox on her civilisation who has done more damage to her democratic norms in less than a year than Mugabe has done to democracy in four decades. Yes, I know, I am being hyperbolic for effect.

I am talking about the neo-nazi racist buffoon in the White House. Go and read the New York Times‘s recent op-ed empirically cataloguing this lunatic’s assault on the constitution in just one year. The list includes actual assaults, putative assaults, and wish-list assaults.

Yet, none of them has proposed military coup as a solution to the West’s nightmare in Washington. Everyone just somehow believes in the ability of democracy to resolve its own contradictions in the West. In Africa, they need jackboots to resolve such contradictions.

Military Seizes Power In Zimbabwe – But Denies Coup Against Mugabe

Remember this also: if this coup had happened against an African good boy, these same folks jumping up and down in celebration in Washington and London would have been the loudest in condemning it and screaming about democracy. It would not have mattered if the good boy were a murderous dictator.

I would have preferred Mugabe’s inevitable march to self-destructive ignominy. I hope that democracy in Africa will find a way to consign Paul Biya, Yoweri Museveni, and Teodoro Obiang to the dustbin of history without the dirty hands of the military.

Nigeria Placed In Pot 4 As FIFA Announces Pots For 2018 World Cup Draw

Featured Image

The world football governing body, FIFA, announced the pots for the 2018 World Cup draw on its website on Thursday, November 16, 2017.

In the publication, Nigeria is placed in Pot 4, which means it will not play any of the countries in that pot.

Those countries are Serbia, Australia, Japan, Morocco, Panama, Korea Republic, Saudi Arabia.

Pot 1 has Russia, Germany, Brazil, Portugal, Argentina, Belgium, Poland, and France.

Pot 2 has Spain, Peru, Switzerland, England, Colombia. Mexico, Uruguay, and Croatia.

Pot 3 has Denmark, Iceland, Costa Rica, Sweden, Tunisia, Egypt, Senegal, and Iran.

It was confirmed in September, by the Organising Committee for FIFA Competitions, that all teams will be allocated to (eight-team) pots 1 to 4 based on sporting principles.

FIFA also said it used the October 2017 edition of the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking to allocate all qualified teams to the four pots after hosts Russia took the top seeding spot.

“It is worth remembering that the principle of drawing the teams into the groups will remain unchanged. This means that no teams from the same confederation, with the exception of UEFA, which could have up to two teams in the same group, will be drawn into the same group.”

“The Final Draw will take place on Friday 1 December at Moscow’s State Kremlin Palace, FIFA added.

Ibrahimovic Talks About No. 10 Role

Featured Image

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has hinted at playing a new role for Manchester United on his return, playing up the No. 10 role.

The former Sweden international played a number 9 role in his debut season at United, supported by attacking midfielders.

Ibrahimpvic sustained an ACL injury that has kept him out since April, but Mourinho believes he will be back before the end of the year.

“To me, the No.10 is the star,” he said in a promotional video for Volvo. “The one who makes the difference, gets noticed, wins the matches and is the leader. And I see myself in that position but it is not something that is given to you, it is just something you are, that’s just the way it is.

“To be honest, it is like a trigger for me coming back from that injury because I wore the No.10 in the Swedish national team and PSG. I would have worn it at Inter but I soon moved to Barcelona. I wanted it in Milan but took another number out of respect. In Ajax, I didn’t have it.

“I feel like a ten and I stand for No.10. It will go down in history that I always had No.10.”

Emery: Neymar’s Performance On The Pitch All That Matters

Featured Image

Paris Saint-Germain manager Unai Emery insists that speculation surrounding Neymar, should not distract from his exploits on the pitch.

The Brazil international has scored 11 goals in 12 matches for PSG and has been rumoured to have problems with Emery and has also been linked with a move to Madrid.

Emery admits Neymar is still adjusting to life in France and a new squad, but insists he will deliver for PSG on the pitch.

“It’s the same for all players who arrive in a new club, with a new staff, new players,” Emery said.

“It’s a process and everyone in the club has to make this process easier. With Neymar and the other players, we talk.

“It’s better and, for me, what happens on the field is the most important thing. We are happy, the team is better. All that goes on outside is not the most important. What is important is what happens on the pitch.

“He especially wants to be on the pitch. He’s happy when he plays, and I’m the same. We want him to be good with us, to play as he knows how to do, and we all go forward to achieve our goals with him.”

Google Honours Chinua Achebe With Its Doodle Today – And Here’s Why

Featured Image

The late Nigerian author Chinua Achebe was today, November 16, honoured in a Google Doodle, underscoring his status as a towering figure of 20th century literature.

Chinua Achebe: Why Google honours him todaySurrounded by symbols, donning his signature cap and spectacles, Achebe, who is widely considered as Africa’s greatest storyteller, can be pictured in front of a green banner decorated with icons of his most famous literary works in Thursday’s Google Doodle.

The illustration honors the legacy of the renowned Nigerian writer as the tech giant is celebrating the storyteller many consider to be father of modern African literature on what would be his 87th birthday.

The novelist was born on November 16, 1930. His first novel Things Fall Apart (1958), often considered his best, is one of the most widely read books in modern African literature.

His journey into the world of African literature began from the University of Ibadan where he studied English literature instead of medicine that was earlier intended.

Achebe rose to international prominence when he published Things Fall Apart at 28 years-old. Based on his own family heritage and upbringing, the story recounts the demise of an Ibo man in southeastern Nigeria under the oppression of 19th century British colonial rule.

The book is now a classic and required reading for students, selling more than 20 million copies and translated into 57 different languages.

Achebe went on to write No Longer at Ease (1960), Arrow of God (1964), A Man of the People (1966), and Anthills of the Savannah(1987).

Acknowledged as the father of modern African literature, Chinua was awarded 30 honorary degrees from universities around the world.

Achebe also won many literary awards, from the inaugural Nigerian National Merit Award in 1979 to the Man Booker International Prize for Fiction in 2007.

He won The Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize in 2010. The annual prize is given to “a man or woman who has made an outstanding contribution to the beauty of the world and to mankind’s enjoyment and understanding of life”.

South Africa’s anti-apartheid revolutionary leader Nelson Mandela called him a writer “in whose company the prison walls fell down”.

The current president of South Africa Jacob Zuma has described him as a “colossus of African writing”.

Literary critics have compared Achebe’s eminence worldwide to Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Toni Morrison and a handful of other writers.

Moses: Chelsea Are Not Scared Of City

Featured Image

Chelsea wingback, Victor Moses says the squad is a squad of brothers and they do not fear Manchester City.

The Nigeria international has been out injured and watched from the sidelines as City stormed to a nine-point lead.

Moses is certain Chelsea is the squad that can turn it all around, as they go into the busy winter.

“I think we have done well. We as a team, whatever happens, we stick together as a team and do the best we can,” Moses told Goal after being shortlisted for both the BBC’s African Footballer of the Year and the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) Player of the Year awards. “I think people have been a bit too harsh but we as players don’t need to think about that or concentrate on what people have been saying.

“These criticisms are the kinds of things that makes a player stronger. We know that we just need to believe in ourselves and prove them wrong then win as many games as I can. We are 100 per cent together. We are like brothers here and we are all sticking together and working hard together.

“Even after losing against Roma, we believe in ourselves collectively and individually. We have great players. We just take each game as it comes. We beat Manchester United, now everyone is saying that we’re the best. Football is like this. We believe in ourselves and work hard together as a team.

“Why can’t we compete with City, United or any other club? Our players are good enough to compete with anyone. We have a lot of games to go so you can’t tell who’s going to win the league. We are nine points from Man City but we believe in ourselves and we believe that something can happen further down the line and that we will find ourselves back at the top.

“We still believe in ourselves and in the manager we have got so we will keep working hard and see where it takes us. Yes, this season is going to be harder than last season now we’re in the Champions League as well. We are playing Tuesday, Saturday or Sunday on most weeks, but as players we are not looking at that.

“We are just trying to play as many games as possible and trying to win football matches. If we can win all the trophies then that would be a great bonus for us. We don’t need to compete with City alone.

“We beat them home and away last season and we are the champions of England so we can believe in ourselves and we all want to win every trophy this season. We are still in the Champions League, Premier League and Carabao Cup, then there’s the FA Cup as well.

“We want to try to win all trophies. We try to do that and then going into the World Cup, that would give you more confidence going into the World Cup to help your nation.”

Drake Threatens Fan Who Was Groping Women At Club

Featured Image

Popular rapper Drake has threatened to come into the audience and stop a fan who he said was groping women at a performance in Australia.

The Canadian rapper has been spending most of the month of November in Australia and New Zealand running through a bunch of stops on his Boy Meets World Tour.

The Australia/New Zealand leg of the tour kicked off on November 3, and will run through November 20.

While performing at one of his shows in Sydney, Australia, it appears as though Drake was involved in a tense standoff with a male fan at a nightclub.

It was learnt that the Canadian rapper, while performing, saw a fan in the audience apparently groping women in the crowd. He then interrupted his performance and threatened to personally intervene.

“If you don’t stop touching girls, I will come out there and f— you up,” Drake said in video from the incident at a Nov. 15 afterparty in Sydney, which has been posted to Instagram.

And the rapper didn’t stop there.

“I’m not playing,” Drake continued. “If you don’t stop putting your hands on girls, I’m going to come out there and f— your ass up.”

Fans, unsurprisingly, cheered him on and went wild.

“I got this close to Drake threatening to jump into the crowd to start a fight with a guy groping a woman in the audience,” a fan who posted the video online wrote.

Mourinho: UCL Is Harder For EPL Clubs

Featured Image

José Mourinho believes the Champions League becomes a tough competition for English teams, due to their winter schedule.

The five EPL teams in the UCL are in a good position to make it to the knockout stages, with Tottenham and City already securing spots.

However, Mourinho believes the heavy winter schedule in the EPL will prove detrimental to their chances in the UCL.

“I always say the Champions League only starts in February, and in February the English teams are [still playing] after December and January where we can play 20 matches over two months. The Germans, the French, the Spanish, the Italians, they all come from a winter break,” he told the Mirror.

“So I think they arrive in better condition than the English teams.”

“It’s also a fact that any match you play in this country, if you don’t go strong, you lose,” he continued.

“We go to Bristol (City of the Championship next Wednesday) in the (EFL Cup) quarter-final and if you don’t go with a strong team, you lose. That’s as simple as that.

“In other other countries, between the top teams and the others, there is huge difference and not just in terms of talent and potential but also in terms of mentality.”

“Here, the smaller teams want to win, want to compete, want to have the courage to try and get a result.”

Nigeria Suspends New Approvals For Tank Farms In Apapa, Reconstruction Begins Next Week

Featured Image

The federal government has announced the suspension of more approvals for tank farms in Apapa, Lagos, as part of plans to de-congest the axis.

The managing director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Hadiza Bala Usman, made this known on Tuesday after a government-private sector meeting on how to resolve the Apapa traffic gridlock.

Usman further disclosed that all empty containers will be taken to holding bay as part of the new measures.

Her words: “We have noted that there is a need to move empty containers out of that location.”

“So we have received clear directives that all empty containers need to be taken to holding bay. Shipping companies cannot have port locations within the ports any more, so that will free a lot of traffic within the area.

“We have also noted the need for all tank farm owners to comply with the utilisation of holding bays. No more approvals of tank farms will be permitted within the Apapa area any longer.

“There is also full commitment of Dangote to complete the reconstruction of Apapa Wharf Road by June 2018, but palliative works will commence within the  immediate period for Tin Can Island.

“There is a decisive effort by the vice-president giving clear directives on the need for us to conclude on reconstruction, the trailer park on Tin Can Island will also be reconstructed within three months, so that we can have access to holding bays and trailer parks.

“The NPA is also licensing access to the trailer parks and port allocations. We are issuing advertisements seeking for expression of interest of fro the private sector to operate some trailer parks and holding bays within the Tin Can Island area.

“We are embarking on that within the shortest period and we appeal to the exporters to work with us in traffic management, we are instituting strong task force that will manage the traffic inflow and outflow within the Apapa and Tin Can Island environ.

“This is an emergency for us and that is why we are here today to address these issues.  We have seen the commitment from the Ministry of Works and the NPA will give support in anyway we can.”

The Federal Government also said it is losing over N10 billion daily to the Apapa Wharf gridlock.

President of Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, disclosed this at the end of the same meeting, which was presided over by Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo.

Dangote also disclosed to State House Correspondents that reconstruction will start on the Apapa-Oworonshoki Expressway by next week.

“Apapa-Oworoshoki Way is going to start next week. Everything, including the design, have been handed over. We will start work next week.

“The bidding process is going to go on where four, five contractors will bid. Anyone who wins the contract, we will fund the project under the agreement that we have,” the business mogul said. Upon completion, Dangote said the federal government would save a lot of money as against the current loss of over N10 billion daily.

“You have to understand that Apapa and Tin Can Island Ports handle about 80 percent of cargoes that come  into Nigeria. As we speak, some of our ships are waiting to come in from Lome and discharge. It is not because we don’t have anywhere to berth the ship but because all our operations are choked up, because we have containers, general cargoes that have actually been there and we are not able to remove.

“But, I am more worried about the smaller operators because for those that have imported, the charges are accumulating everyday. Transport charge has almost doubled.”

Featured Image

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) on Wednesday said it had commenced plans for the 2018 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and Direct Entry (DE) due to take place from March 9 to 17.

Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, JAMB’s Registrar made this known at a Critical Stakeholders Meeting on Plans and Modalities for the Sale and Registration of 2018 UTME Application.

‎Oloyede said that the proposed sale of application would commence on Nov. 22 and end Jan. 22, 2018, spanning two months as against one month in 2017 for the exercise.

‎“In proposing these dates, management has taken into consideration the dates of other public examinations namely, WAEC, NECO.

‎“Having examined that all logistics are put in place for a smooth exercise, management would strictly adhere to the sale period.

“Therefore all critical stakeholders are advised to cooperate, collaborate, support and assist the board in this direction,’’ he said.

Oloyede said the application fees for the examination remained N5, 000, adding that this was inclusive of the N300 commission paid on each application to selling points.

Oloyede added that in the 2018 UTME, the board would introduce Electronic Jammers at all CBT centres ‎as part of measures to ensure that the integrity of the test was maintained.

Ojukwu’s Son Dumps APGA For APC Ahead Of Anambra Election

Featured Image

Mr Emeka Ojukwu jnr, son of the founder of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), late Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, has dumped the party for the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Ojukwu jnr made his declaration known yesterday in Awka, at the grand finale campaign of the APC candidate for the Anambra 2017 governorship election, Dr Tony Nwoye.

The event was witnessed by President Muhammadu Buhari, APC National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, 12 APC governors, National Assembly members in the party, among other party bigwigs.

Speaking at the event after defecting, Ojukwu jnr said his decision to join the party was to protect the interest of the Igbos.

Clad in a toga of his new party, he said it was time for the people of the South-East region to move from “the recession of the periphery to the centre.”

“It is time to leave the shadows for light. Every now and then, they come out with my father’s shadow to confuse the people,” he said.

According to him, APGA is a means to an end but not an end itself.

He said the reason why his father joined the National Party of Nigeria in the Second Republic was to ensure that Igbo people remained in the mainstream of Nigerian politics.

“Mr President, I am proud to stand here today in support of you and in solidarity with the APC and our candidate, Tony Nwoye,” he added.

The APC national chairman presented the party symbol to him and described the rally as “another historic campaign.”

NCC Set To Grant 14-Day Grace To Subscribers To Roll Over Unused Data

Featured Image

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has said that it is planning to issue a directive to telecommunications operators to give 14 days’ window to subscribers to enable them roll over their unused data.

This was contained in a statement issued by the Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, Umar Danbatta, while speaking at the NCC Special Day at the just concluded 2017 Lagos International Trade Fair on Wednesday, November 16, 2017.

The executive vice chairman said that subscribers would be given the 14 days grace, even if they do not renew on the date of expiration of their data.

He said that this would stop the present practice where subscribers would lose the entire unused data if they failed to renew on the date of the expiration of the present subscription.

According to him, NCC recognises that telecommunications services are very important to the nation’s development.

“NCC also recognises more importantly, that the consumers of telecommunications services deserve to get value for their money.

“NCC also recognises that consumer should be treated as a very important stakeholder in the scheme of things as far as service delivery is concerned.

No less than 18 persons were feared dead while 29 others injured on Wednesday evening as two suicide bombers attacked a crowded suburb of Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, police said.

It was gathered that powerful blasts were heard echoing over the Maiduguri metropolis late in the evening of Wednesday as the suspected Boko Haram attackers let go their explosives.

Confirming the development, the spokesperson of the Nigeria Police Force in Borno, Victor Isukwu, said the attacks were carried out by four suspected Boko Haram suicide bombers.

He said the suicide bombers – two male and two female – targeted some crowded locations of Muna Gari, a suburb of Maiduguri that falls under Konduga Local Government Area.

“Today 15/11/2017, at about 1813hrs, four suicide bombers, two males and two females, infiltrated Muna Gari community in Konduga LGA, and detonated IED strapped to their bodies at different location,” Mr. Isukwu, a deputy superintendent of police, said.

“The first explosion occurred at a prayer ground, while the other explosions occurred thereafter, all within the community.

“A total of eighteen persons including the four suicide bombers, died in the multiple explosions. While twenty nine others sustained various degrees of injuries and were rushed to university of Maiduguri teaching hospital/State Specialist Hospital for medical attention.”

He added that police patrol and explosive teams were promptly mobilised to the scene of the attacks to ensure the place was sanitised and rendered safe.

“Normalcy has been restored to the community”, he said.

The yearn for an Islamic Caliphate by Boko Haram terrorists in Northern Nigeria has caused about 100,000 deaths since 2009.
