Riyad Mahrez Not Thinking About Leaving Leicester City In January

Featured Image

Riyad Mahrez insists he is happy at Leicester City and is refusing to think about what might happen in the January transfer window.

Riyad Mahrez was heavily linked with a move to Roma during the summer, but stayed at the King Power Stadium and has found form in recent weeks, scoring three goals in his last five club matches.

“I don’t want to think about [January],” he told Sky Sports. “We still have 12 games to go until January, so if I think about January now I’m not going to play football.

“I need to play and concentrate on football and the team and we will see.”

“I am settled, I’ve always been settled,” insisted Leicester’s in-form frontman. “Of course I wanted a new challenge, but it didn’t happen and that’s okay.

“I wasn’t disappointed for myself because I love this club and I have been through everything with this club.

We won the League, we were in the Champions’ League and we got safety in the last two games in our first year in the Premier League.

“I went from the Championship to the Premier League and Champions’ League with this club – everything with this club! I am very confident here and I feel good.”

Mathieu Flamini Set To Undergo Trials At Rayo Vallecano

Former Arsenal midfielder Mathieu Flamini will undergo a trial at Rayo Vallecano

Mathieu Flamini, 33, is currently without a club after being released by Crystal Palace at the end of last season.

He will look to resume his career in Spain, though, with Radio MARCA reporting that he will arrive in Madrid in the next few days after being offered a trial by Spanish second-tier side Rayo Vallecano.

Flamini has recently revealed what life is like as a free agent

He said: “Every morning, I am still waking up and I am 100 per cent committed to football. But, at the moment, I am waiting for the right opportunity.

“I’ve been fortunate enough to have received many offers from this country and Europe but I want the right project.

The situation is straight- forward. It is not about just the club but a project, something that can stimulate me. To me, the project is more important.”

It seems that “project” could well be to help Rayo Vallecano rise into La Liga – they are currently in eighth spot in the Segunda Division.

Mariano Diaz Doesn’t Regret Leaving Real Madrid

Featured Image

Lyon striker Mariano Diaz has hinted that he doesn’t regret leaving Real Madrid earlier this year, although he refused to rule out a future move back to the Bernabeu.

Mariano Diaz , who came through the ranks at the Bernabeu, has shone in France since moving to Lyon in the summer, bagging nine goals in 12 Ligue 1 outings.

Madrid, meanwhile, have struggled in front of goal, with some suggesting they should have kept hold of the forward.

The player himself insists he is happy with the decision he made, although he says he would never dismiss a return to the European champions.

Speaking to Radio MARCA, he said: “People tell me that this year I could have been Madrid’s second striker, but I always respond in the same way – I am very happy where I am.

“[Real Madrid] is such a big club that I would never close [the door on a return], but I always say that I have a contract for five years with Lyon, I’ve just started [here] andI am very comfortable.”

Benatia: Morocco’s World Cup Qualification A Beautiful Moment

Featured Image

Juventus defender, Mehdi Benatia has revealed that being the man to lead Morocco to the World Cup is the most beautiful moment of his career.

Morocco has not featured in the World Cup for a long while, missing out of the showpiece since 1998.

The Atlas Lions ran out 2-0 winners over Ivory Coast, with Benatia, who has also lined up for Bayern scoring the second, as Morocco qualified.

“It was the most beautiful moment of my career,” Benatia told Sky Italia.

“I told the players that I’d been lucky enough to win titles with Bayern and Juve and this is what we play football for.

“But after so many years of doing this for our country, this qualification for the World Cup means so much. As captain, I feel it even more, and it was a wonderful moment.

“Every morning I get up and think about it and I’m happy because we didn’t really get to celebrate but in six months there will be an incredible party in Morocco because it’s a country that lives for football.

“Unfortunately we’ve had to watch the World Cup on TV for 20 years but now we’re going and it really is something to be proud of,” he concluded.

Give Us Electricity, And We’ll Build Africa – Olusegun Obasanjo And Greg Mills

CLICK here to read more opinion articles

‘Give us electricity,’ said Peter Owyia, a cobbler, and ‘I will double my daily production.’

Peter’s calculation was common among the estimated 50,000 shoe, belt, and bag makers in Ariaria market in the city of Aba in South-East Nigeria’s Abia State. With each cobbler producing an average of 50 shoes per day, it’s a hive of industrial activity in the most unlikely place. Abia’s shoes, boots and sandals are famous throughout Nigeria and, increasingly, as the French labels on some products hint, now in parts of West Africa.

Underfoot it’s a sludge of mud, plastic, and goodness knows only what. The road outside is a slippery track, temporarily worsened by a current project to install a parallel concrete drain. Just inside the entrance is a man focused on fixing a large pile of paraffin cookers. To the left are food vendors. To the right is a team of women manually weaving the leather straps for sandals, the hands a blur of twists, turns and flicks.

Industry is everywhere; the industriousness impressive.

Yet there is one thing mostly missing amidst the sights, smells and sounds of the market: The hypnotic Grrrrrr of small generators. The margin and money is so small that the shoes are manually cut out and sewn on foot-powered treadle sewing machines.

The cost of electricity supplied by Nigeria’s grid is less than half that from generators. But the problem is there is no grid supply. A failure of the consumer to pay has undermined the production of power, the investment in the equipment and systems required and, in a vicious cycle, the supply of reliable power for which consumers are willing to pay. On paper Nigeria should produce 7100 megawatts, but actually only generates 4600 MW.

But it does not have to be like this.

A stone’s throw away from Ariaria market is the Apia power generation plant, a privately funded $500 million 141 MW facility. Its brand, spanking new – and, so far, unused.

The power plant has its origins in a group of local entrepreneurs, led by Dr. Bart Nnaji, a US university professor and, later, minister of power in Nigeria, who wanted to create a replicable model for sustainable power development in the country. Having obtained the concession for Aba from the federal government in 2005, the consortium built a state-of-the-art plant, rehabilitated the entire local distribution network, put up nearly 150 kilometres of overhead lines within the Aba metropolis, completed or refurbished 12 sub-stations, and constructed a 27 kilometre gas pipeline from Imo River to supply the three General Electric turbines.

Then, with just 60 days work left on the project, the local Enugu Electricity Distribution Company was handed over to another party by the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) without excising Aba from the sale. As Professor Nnaji notes, “The BPE, in effect, double-sold Aba metropolis. This is in spite of the very fact that the agreement we had clearly states that whenever there is privatisation, our company has first right to purchase the facility in Aba.”

Thus Aba now sits with a world class electricity infrastructure which cannot be turned on to the cost of both the investors and local industry, which is bound to turn off other investors. In this way, Nigeria’s greatest high-energy development asset is also its greatest problem: Nigerians themselves.

Yet the country’s population will more than double to 415 million in the next generation. The five states of the South-East will increase to 45 million people over this time. To create the jobs their people crave, they will need an enabling environment for business and the infrastructure to power industry and get goods to market. The government should resolve the power impasse before it expects investors to follow.

Compare this to Costa Rica, which we visited this past week with a delegation from the Brenthurst Foundation. The results of the last 30 years show that governments have consistently taken a corporate view, looked after its investors, and got things done.

In 1980, Costa Rica’s exports comprised mainly coffee, fruit and beef. Today it exports 4300 products to 150 countries, and is home to 300 high-tech companies, including Intel and Amazon. Traditional exports have fallen from two-thirds of the total 30 years ago to under 15 percent by 2016. With just five million citizens, it has similarly revolutionised its tourism sector, with the numbers growing tenfold to three million visitors over the same period, and the average stay doubling to 12 days.

Investors speak warmly of the reasons for being in Costa Rica: the quality of the workforce, with free mandatory education since 1869; openness, with 14 free trade agreements in force to a market totalling 2.5 billion consumers; and political stability, given its 125 years of democracy. Its infrastructure is admittedly rickety in part and energy is not cheap, at US$0.17c kw/h, but like government policy, it’s wholly reliable.

The rule of law, effective government functioning and sound macro-economic fundamentals are, as they put it, ‘all taken as a given’. But they are bolstered by extremely focused and energetic export and trade promotion bodies, keen not just to attract investors, but on ‘after-care,’ says a director of their investment promotion board, CINDE, ‘given that two-thirds of investment is re-investment’.

The initial Intel investment 20 years ago, which was the catalyst for much that followed, was the result of a deliberate effort led by the president to attract the chip maker. Little wonder then that Costa Rica’s real per capita income has gone up five times in the last 35 years, to $15,000, and the country ranks #1 in education and health care in Latin America, and #2 in terms of ‘social progress’.

The elevator pitch, insists Costa Rica’s trade minister, should be all about ‘the people’. Yet it’s more than that. Skills may be critical but people also require a reliable facilitator in government, which Nigeria and much of Africa lacks.

A large sign above one of Ariaria market’s alleyways read: ‘This is Big Line, Where God Makes People Big’. Even so, government has a critical role to play in setting a competiveness vision, and acting on its promises by delivering the policies and hardware that enable business to compete. And that starts, in Abia’s case, with turning on the electricity.

Olusegun Obasanjo, the former president of Nigeria, chairs the Brenthurst Foundation; Greg Mills is its director. They are co-authors of the recent Making Africa Work: A Handbook for Economic Success.

Small Doctor Breaks Silence On “AFRIMA 2017” Nomination Snub

Featured Image

Popular Nigerian artist and street pop king, Small Doctor, has broken his silence after he was apparently snubbed during the recently held AFRIMA 2017 Awards.

Following the popularity, acceptance and rave that accompanied the release of his 2016 hit song “Penalty”, many would certainly have concluded that he would be a sure candidate for this year’s award nominations.

However, the singer was not nominated and it sparked a major conversation amongst fans.

Speaking during an exclusive chat with Showtime, the self-styled “king of the streets” said that being nominated or not at the awards is not a big deal as long as he is still making waves as a musician.

He said: “To be nominated and to be appreciated are two different things; for my picture to be on the banners and to have been invited for the awards is enough, because I appreciate every bit of my life. A fall never keeps me down, though this is not a fall; anything goes, nominated or not nominated I’m balling”.

In addition to that, Small Doctor said that he only has to work harder while keeping his eye on the prize.

“Don’t get it twisted, I don’t mean that being nominated and winning awards doesn’t translate to an achievement; but I won’t kill myself because they refused to nominate me. I just have to work harder while keeping my eye on the prize. There are songs that don’t get nominations but they shut down the show when they are performed at awards; and you will be wondering if the organisers were blind during nominations. Well, I can’t judge them and they can’t judge me as well”, he added.

“Arsenal have got much more history than Tottenham and that means they should be above them.

#AnambraDecides2017: 36 Political Parties, Over 2,158,171 Electorate To Vote Amidst Tight Security

Featured Image

At least 2,158,171 electorate would vote in today’s governorship election in Anambra, which will go down as one of the most anticipated governorship elections in the history of Nigeria.

Blaring siren and the sound of roving helicopters have become common in the state in the wake of the governorship polls as 36 political parties field candidates for the ultimate position – which is the seat of the state executive.

Apart from the stiff competition in the election, there have been security threats.

There was palpable fear yesterday that the election could be marred by violence amid rumours of bomb blast in Onitsha.

The tension in the state was further exacerbated by the secessionist Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), through its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, who had earlier said unless the Nigerian State calls for a referendum to determine the status of the country, there would be no election in Anambra State.

Despite being labelled a terrorist organisation, members of IPOB staged a demonstration in Onitsha, the Anambra State capital, threatening voters not to participate in today’s election.

In his reaction, the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Operations, Mr. Joshak Habila, dismissed the threat by IPOB, insisting that the voters should come out and exercise their franchise without fear.

Meanwhile, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has commenced the distribution of materials in the Registration Area Centres (RAC) across the 21 local government areas of the state.

The four major gladiators in the election are the All Progressive Grand Alliance’s Willie Obiano, who is the incumbent governors and the All Progressives Congress’s Tony Nwoye.

The others are the People’s Democratic Party’s Oseloka Obaze and United Progressive Party’s Osita Chidoka.

Anambra has 21 council areas, 326 registration areas, 4,608 polling units and 731 voting points.

Today’s election proceedings is keenly watched across the world as its outcome will further chart a new course for Nigeria’s sovereignty and determine the measures being taking to stop unrest.

While the police have deployed 26,000 personnel for the election, the Civil Defence have deployed 13,000 personnel, officials said.

The Army and Navy are also believed to have deployed hundreds of personnel to maintain peace for the elections.

The police deployment comprise police special forces, police mobile forces, Counter Terrorism Units and Bomb Protection Units.

Others are bomb disposal specialists, as well as sniffer and attack dogs. Surveillance helicopters will monitor proceedings from the air, while there will be gunboats on the river Niger, plus 15 armoured personnel carriers and 303 patrol vehicles.

These measures are put in place to ensure a seamless election and also ensure any threat by IPOB is not carried out.

Chris Coleman Set To Become New Manager Of Sunderland

Featured Image

Chris Coleman has agreed to become the new Sunderland manager. The 47-year-old is expected to be confirmed as Simon Grayson’s successor over the weekend, according to reports

On Thursday, it was revealed that Chris Coleman was the top candidate for the Sunderland job, and the Black Cats have now convinced him to take over at the Stadium of Light.

Coleman’s future as Wales manager has been in doubt following their failure to qualify for next summer’s World Cup finals in Russia, and he left his role on Friday after talks with the Welsh FA failed to come to a successful conclusion.

“We are extremely disappointed to see Chris’ tenure as Wales manager come to an end,” FA chief executive Jonathan Ford said. “The FAW and Wales as a nation will be eternally grateful for the job he has done over the last six years as national team manager, from travelling the length and breadth of Wales outside of the media spotlight to talk to players and supporters, to guiding us to the semi-finals of the European Championships.

“We wish Chris the very best of luck for the future as he returns to club management, a desire for which he has always been honest and open about.”

Coleman’s decision to take over at the Stadium of Light would appear to be something of a gamble on his part given Sunderland’s problems over the past few seasons but it is a club with huge potential and Coleman has the personality to make an instant impact.

Coleman’s decision to leave international football will come as a massive disappointment to the Wales players, who made their feelings known as to how desperate they were for him to continue in the job after his spectacular success.

Nigeria Handed Favourable Group In CHAN Draws

Nigeria have been handed a favourable draw for the 2018 African Nations Championship (CHAN) on Friday

The Home based eagles have been grouped alongside Libya, Equatorial Guinea and Rwanda.

The 16-team tournament, which takes place in Morocco between January 12 and February 4, 2018, is exclusively for players based in their domestic leagues.

Nigeria, whose best outing was a third-place finish in 2014, will be making their third appearance at the tournament

Libya, the 2014 champions, make a return to feature for a third time at the competition

Rwanda, on their part, are expected to provide the Super Eagles with a stern test.

Equatorial Guinea are tipped to be the underdogs in the group due to their inexperience at international level.

Juup Heynckes Confirms Bayern Munich’s Interest In Signing Sandro Wagner

Featured Image

Bayern Munich coach Jupp Heynckes has confirmed the club’s interest in signing Germany forward Sandro Wagner from Bundesliga rivals Hoffenheim in the winter break.

“When you have interest in a player who is under contract then you first have to go to the club. You speak with one another and that has happened,” said Heynckes.

Bayern sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic has spoken with Hoffenheim counterpart Alexander Rosen “to determine whether such a possibility exists at all. Because he’s an important player for Hoffenheim, a national team player.”

Wagner, who has four goals and two assists in the Bundesliga this season, would be signed as a backup for Robert Lewandowski, the league top scorer with 11 so far.

Heynckes added: “Normally such transfers are extremely difficult in winter.”

No Rift Between Cristiano Ronaldo And Sergio Ramos – Zinedine Zidane

Featured Image

Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane has played down a reported dressing-room disagreement between Cristiano Ronaldo and Sergio Ramos.

Sergio Ramos defended the strength of Real’s squad after cristu6Ronaldo appeared to suggest following their Champions League defeat to Tottenham that it had been weakened by the summer departures of Alvaro Morata, Danilo, Fabio Coentrao, Pepe and James Rodriguez.

Zidane was asked about the duo ahead of Saturday’s derby against Atletico Madrid

“One of them saying one thing, and the other, another, that’s for you to discuss.

“We’re relaxed on the inside and we’re only thinking about tomorrow’s game. Sergio is very smart and he can say whatever he likes. The same goes for Cristiano. They’re bright guys, they’ve been together a long time and have won a lot.”

These two players are part of the history of this club,” he said. “They respect each other a lot and are both intelligent people. They are together a long time, won a lot together, maybe sometimes if they disagree over something it is not important.

“Things are sorted inside, and there has been no problem between Cristiano and Sergio. It is good that players give their opinions, it shows they are alive.”

The poor goal-scoring form so far this La Liga season by Ronaldo and strike partner Karim Benzema was not something that had required his personal intervention, Zidane added.

“It is true that [their numbers] in La Liga are not normal, but they have been scoring in the Champions League,” he said. “There is no need to tell Karim and Cristiano they must train more, they do it naturally. And on the pitch they will have chances and in this moment they will score. I am sure.”

“My Father Gave Me A Condom At The Age Of 16” – Rapper CDQ Reveals

Featured Image

Popular indigenous rap artiste, CDQ, would never forget the year 2008 as it was the time he lost his father. Taking a trip down memory lane with Saturday Beats, the singer referred to his father as his best friend and confidant.

“I was very close to my father who died in 2008. I learnt that he was in his office when he suddenly slumped and he was rushed to the hospital. He was in the hospital for some time before he finally died. His death really affected the family financially. Also, my father was our guide and he advised us on every life situation.

“When I was 16, my father called me and said that he knew that at my age, I would be seeing girls. He gave me a condom and told me that if I must have sex, I should ensure I wear one. He made it known that he was against pre-marital sex but I should always protect myself if I must engage in the act. He also always advised that as a man, I should always ensure that I worked hard and earn money because by doing so, the ladies would chase me. I have really missed that intimacy and friendship I had with my dad.

Also, there was the financial aspect. My father was the one that took care of his extended family. My father taught me not to depend on anybody,” the Sai Baba singer said.

The banker-turned-singer told Saturday Beats that when he wanted to quit the banking hall for recording booths, he did not have the courage to tell his widowed mother being the first child of the family.

“There is no one that would leave a bank job for music that would not be scared of the career change but at that time, I had a lot of pressure on me. I lost my father when I was still in school back then in 2008. That period was when Lagos State was doing road expansion so they broke the two shops my mother had on Alaba Expressway. I am the first child of my family so I had to fend for my family.

I had a lot of people who depended on me, so it made the decision even tougher for me when Mastakraft advised me to leave the banking hall for the recording booth. I listened to his advice and took music seriously. He promised me that after six months, things would change in my life if I embraced music squarely and his prediction came to pass.

“I did not tell my mother when I quit my job, she did not even know about my decision. She thought I was working in the bank because I used to give her money from what I made at small shows I performed at. She did not know I was a musician till I started to prosper,” CDQ said.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek And Tammy Abraham Are Chelsea’s Future – Antonio Conte

Featured Image

Antonio Conte has again defended Chelsea’s loan policy by stressing that Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Tammy Abraham still have a future at the club

The pair are thriving away from West London in the opening months of the 2017-18 campaign, seeing their form rewarded with England caps against Germany and Brazil during the international break.

Loftus-Cheek has already played 500 minutes more for Crystal Palace in the Premier League this term than he did for Chelsea in the whole of last season, while Abraham has notched five goals in 14 appearances at Swansea City.

Conte insists that both players have a part to play at Chelsea in the long term, however, telling reporters: “I think we are talking about two really good young players. Ruben and Tammy will be the future for Chelsea.

“Now it’s right for them to play regularly. Ruben said that his path is perfect and to play regularly this season is very important for his development. Then he can come back and play for Chelsea with greater maturity.

“It’s the same path as [Andreas] Christensen. He played for two years on loan and now he’s playing regularly for Chelsea. He’s young but an important Chelsea player.”
