On Thursday, another batch of 150 Nigerians returned to the country from the crisis-ridden Libya after they had undergone severe torture in the North African country.

360nobs had earlier reported that 242 Nigerian migrants – who were stranded in Libya – landed at Lagos airport on a Libyan airline flight at around 9pm local time on Tuesday.

The migrants were given a stipend for transportation and taken to a hotel to spend the night before heading to their homes.

It was gathered that most of the returnees had planned to use Libya as a channel to cross to Europe through the Mediterranean Sea, but were caught in the web of crisis and could not go further with their plans.

Nigeria Appoints Dr Abdul Zubair As Acting D-G Of SEC

Featured Image

The Federal Government on Sunday announced the appointment of Dr Abdul Zubair as acting Director-General, Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

Mrs Efe Ebelo of the commission’s Corporate Communications Unit, said in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the appointment was with immediate effect.

Ebelo stated that the appointment followed the suspension of Mr Munir Gwarzo, the commission’s boss.

She assured the investing public and stakeholders, both local and international, of the commission’s commitment to ensuring uninterrupted and orderly operation of the market and regulation.

Until his appointment, Zubair was the Director in charge of External Relations in the commission.

Ebelo stated that the SEC would continue to ensure the stability of the Nigerian capital market and sustain the all-time high level of investors’ confidence.

She added that recent developments in the commission would not be allowed to disrupt its regulatory effectiveness and efficiency as statutory regulator of the capital market.

She assured that the market would run smoothly despite the development.

Ebelo said the commission patiently awaited the outcome of the assignment of the Administrative Panel of Inquiry set up by the Minister of Finance to investigate the allegations against the former boss.

She said that at no point would the management allow the operational independence of the commission to be compromised.

“This is strictly in line with the objectives and principles of securities regulations as set out by the International Organisation of Securities Commissions (IOSCO), to which Nigeria is a signatory,’’ she said.

Ebelo said that the commission would continue to be faithful to its developmental mandates as enunciated in the Investments and Securities Act (ISA).

She added that SEC would ensure market efficiency, accountability and transparency and would proceed with all regulatory matters currently before it with.

She said the commission would do that with all sense of objectivity and fairness and with the best interest of investors.

She added: “in this regard the commission will make public its decisions on matters before it as promptly as such decisions are being arrived at.

“The role of the capital market in economic stability and growth cannot be over-emphasised, hence the commission will not at any time permit the abandonment of its regulatory and developmental responsibilities.’’

It will be recalled that Mrs Kemi Adeosun, the Minister of Finance on Nov. 29 suspended Gwarzo over allegations of financial impropriety.

Adeosun immediately set up an administrative panel of inquiry to investigate the allegations.

She said that the suspension of Gwarzo was to allow for an unhindered investigation of several allegations of financial impropriety leveled against him.

She also suspended two other senior staff of the commission: Abdulsalam Naif Habu, Head of Media Division; and Anastasia Omozele Braimoh, Head of Legal Department.

The acting director-general is an alumnus of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, where he received B.Sc. Economics, MBA, M.Sc. and PhD Business Administration degrees.

Atiku Joins PDP – “I Will Defeat Buhari In 2019”

Featured Image

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has announced his defection to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Buhari Dismisses Atiku’s U.S Ban Claim

The former VP, who recently resigned as a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), said in a live video broadcast on Facebook, on Sunday, that he is rejoining the PDP.

His Facebook post reads: “Hello, my name is Atiku Abubakar. I am speaking to you today on Facebook Live as I want to reach as many of our young people as possible as I have an important announcement to make about the future of Nigeria.

“As it is you, our youths, who represent the future of our nation. I have found in my travels across the country that whenever I get into conversationswith young people their number one concern is whether they will be able to get a job for without a job they have no means of sustaining themselves or begin a family.

“And without the security of a job we cannot have security in our country. So without jobs there is no future for you or for Nigeria. And I also know as a parent that the older generation is also concerned about jobs for their children and, too often today, for themselves as well.

“Creating jobs is something I know about as I have created over 50,000 direct jobs and 250,000 indirectjobs in my own State of Adamawa. And I also know how the Government can help create the right environment for businesses to create jobs. When I was Vice President in 1999 I was responsible for liberalising the telecomms sector which enabled us to increase the number of people who could access a phone from less than 1 million then to over 100 million today.

“This transformation resulted in the creation of hundreds of thousands of new jobs from the top-up card vendors you see on every street corner to the many new businesses that fed off the mobile phone revolution. Some of you may know that I was elected Vice President under the banner of the PDP, which is the political party I had helped to found some ten years before.

“And some of you may also know that I left the PDP four years ago when I believed it was no longer aligned to the principles of equity, democracy and social justice upon which we had founded it.

“I joined the APC as I had hoped it would be the new force that would help improve life for our people and I was excited about the party’s manifesto to create 3 million new jobs a year. The result has not been the change people had been promised or voted for, as in the last two years almost 3 million Nigerians have lost their jobs.

“And today with a record 25% of people aged 18-25 unemployed I can see how difficult it is for our youths to find a job. The key to creating jobs is a strong economy and that is what we are currently lacking.

“So today I want to let you know that I am returning home to the PDP as the issues that led me to leave it have now been resolved and it is clear that the APC has let the Nigerian people, and especially our young people, down.”

Atiku was quoted to have earlier said he is sure of defeating President Muhammadu Buhari “this time”, in reference to the 2019 presidential election.

The former VP was quoted as saying this in an interview with Dele Momodu on The Boss newspaper.

He said: “I will definitely beat him this time. He has wasted a lot of his massive goodwill. A lot of people are disgruntled but they are keeping quiet and lying low. Our youths are suffering terribly. They are even now being sold into slavery.

“Everyone knows my track record of inviting and attracting a good team and giving them the opportunity to work professionally. Nigerians are tired of leaders who cannot think big and work big.”

The Libyan Slave Route And The Greed Factor

The Libyan Slave Route And The Greed Factor, By Kayode Ogundamisi

CLICK here to read more opinion articles

I just glanced through a list of over 2380 Nigerians who have returned from the notorious Libyan slave camps on failed and suicidal trips to Europe. Not ONE name from areas affected by the deadly Nigerian Boko Haram war was on the list. All the names there are from the fairly stable Southern Nigeria. Is the South also undergoing insurgency? Aside the general state of insecurity, and the economic crisis that is also applicable to most countries, do we really have a full-blown war in Southern Nigeria? Are people ducking from bombs and mass refugee camps?

This piece was written by Kayode Ogundamisi. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of

Even if we had war in Southern Nigeria, would it not make sense to see long lines of refugees heading towards the Seme Border in Ogun State or the border between Cross River and Cameroon or in the direction of any other bordering countries in the South? No, our compatriots head North, cross to Niger and then to Libya on the deadly journey to Europe.

African Slavery And The Constant Death Of Nigerians On The Mediterranean Sea

Our young girls now account for the largest number of prostitutes in Europe; our drug dealing compatriots now account for the greater number of undesirables on European streets; not once will you meet a Nigerian victim of Boko Haram crisis seeking international escape, but just that migrant who desires a ‘better life’. Yet, there is nothing wrong in that but for choosing a deadly route and expecting applause when it goes wrong.

One would have expected those facing the Boko Haram war in the Northern part of Nigeria to be the first to face North Africa, considering that they are also closer to Niger and the slave trade route, but no they have remained in IDP camps or only relocated to safe areas within Nigeria and Africa, in the hope that things will get better soon. They are now our ‘mai guards’ in Lagos, you find them pushing wheel barrows in Aba, working on farms in Ikare and doing all that it takes to survive.

As we cry against the Libyans, can we also call out GREED disguised as DESPERATION, the very factor influencing most of the travelers? We can all try being politically correct but we have to go into our Southern Nigerian communities and find out what is really happening there; who are the criminal gangs selling greed to our vulnerable citizens?

Video Of Migrants Sold In Apparent Slave Auction In Libya Provokes Global Outrage

It is natural for humans to seek opportunities but if you chose to pay thousands of dollars so you can have more than the basic needs of life, live in affluence or build mansions, the price you will ultimately pay could be disastrous.

It is understandable when refugees from war torn areas such as Syria, Iraq, South Sudan and even Boko Haram crisis infected areas, choose the Saharan route over gun and bomb blasts at home, but for an economic migrant to invest millions of naira into a journey of no return? It surely speaks volumes, and I shuddered in disbelief as one of the victims with a Yoruba sounding name on CNN claimed he would rather die than return to his home town in Ogun State. I try to imagine what could be going on in Ogun State that would inspire such desperation.

I acknowledge that Nigeria is not an outstanding place to be in, and a number of us migrated years back as a matter of choice, but that choice does not include subjecting oursleves to indignity in a slave camp. As I write this piece, another set of Nigerians are probably on their way to the land of no return; they may have watched the CNN expose but still decide to ignore the danger, as the only image they see is that of a neighbour who left a few years back who is now ‘doing well’ in Europe. They will never see the drowning families, the young girls raped to death, the viral video of the Edo lady made to swallow the urine of her Libyan slave master, the young Nigerian girls buried in Italy, abandoned by their own government, etc. The new set of victims are propelled by the Nigerian lingo that “it is not my portion”, and it is only when death comes staring at them during the journey that they know danger does not understand Nigerian lingos or our religious mumbo jumbo.

You have nothing but yourself to blame. Return back home, borrow yourself some brain, as there are better legitimate means of migration, and invest those millions on a small scale business. Otherwise, you will die hard trying to migrate to Europe. The choice is yours. Nigeria is facing multiple challenges, don’t add your own self-inflicted choices to it.

Kayode Ogundamisi, a public affairs analyst, writes from the U.K.

Burna Boy Will Honour Police Invite When He Returns To The Country – Management

Featured Image

There is still no end in sight in the case of robbery and assault involving controversial reggae-dancehall singer, Damini Ogulu, better known as ‘Burna Boy’, and Grafton Records music act, Abiye David Jumbo, aka ‘Mr. 2Kay.

After being declared wanted by the Police for masterminding robbery attack and physical assault on his fellow musician, Mr. 2Kay, in his room at Eko Hotel and Suites on October 22nd, Burna Boy has failed to turn himself in for questioning

Contrary to suspicions making the rounds that Burna Boy has intentionally refused to honour the invitation because he is guilty of the allegations levelled against him, Showtime’s investigation revealed that his absence has been as a result of his international engagement, but will return to Nigeria in December to honour police invitation.

According to a close source to Burna Boy’s management;

“Burna Boy is not in the country at the moment, but he’ll definitely be back in December because he has a show in Botswana on the 2nd of December, so he should be around after that date to honour the invitation.”

Meanwhile, Mr. 2Kay’s management has pleaded with his fans and the general public to allow the police continue their investigation because the case is a criminal one and they are confident of the police’s competency to make sure culprits of the incidents are brought to book.

The management further disclosed that taking legal actions is dependent on the outcome of the talks between their lawyers and Eko Hotel, assuring that the public would be informed as the matter unfolds.

Eddie Howe Unhappy With Referee Over Penalty Call Vs Southampton

Featured Image

Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe has hit out at referee Jonathan Moss for denying his side a penalty in their 1-1 draw with Southampton on Sunday.

Just after the half-hour mark of the Premier League encounter at the Vitality Stadium, Adam Smith went down in the Saints box under pressure from Sofiane Boufal.

Instead of awarding a spot kick to the Cherries, Moss instead booked Smith for simulation as the two sides went on to score a goal apiece in the encounter.

“It was a clear penalty. I felt it at the time,” Howe told BBC Sport. “I could not believe what the referee did and to see it again makes you feel even worse, it’s one of the most stonewall penalties you will see all season.

“We also lose (Smith) to suspension, so it’s a huge blow. All he (the ref) can do is look at it and learn from it. I can’t ask for more than that. Everyone wants to see diving taken out of the game but maybe he was looking for it where it hadn’t happened.

“It was much better from us today. Today we were good, Southampton were good too, there was no thought about settling for a point from either side. But we were disappointed, having taken the lead, not to hold on.”

Tottenham Willing To Sell Danny Rose For £45M

Featured Image

Tottenham are apparently prepared to sell Danny Rose to Manchester United in January for £45m.

The Daily Star say Mauricio Pochettino only wants players who are totally committed to the club and will sanction the sale of Rose, who criticised the club’s transfer policy in the summer.

It is reported that Tottenham are assessing other left-backs.

Ashley Young has thrived in the left-back position for United this season, but it is understood that head coach Jose Mourinho wants a specialist player in that area of the field, and Rose’s possible arrival would surely end Luke Shaw’s Old Trafford career.

Rose, who has only made two Premier League appearances this season, is contracted to Tottenham until June 2021.

We Dug Deep Against Arsenal – Jesse Lingard

Featured Image

Jesse Lingard has hailed “a great win” after Manchester United claimed a 3-1 win over top-four rivals Arsenal at the Emirates

Antonio Valencia had Jose Mourinho’s visitors in front with less than five minutes on the clock, Lingard then adding his first of the match just seven minutes later.

Alexandre Lacazette put the Gunners back in it early in the second half before Lingard restored his side’s two-goal advantage just after the hour mark.

United found themselves down to 10 men when Paul Pogba saw red for a studs-up challenge on Hector Bellerin, but the Red Devils held firm in the closing stages to see out the win and move five points behind league leaders Manchester City.

“It was a great win,” Lingard told Match of the Day. “I thought the lads dug deep, especially in the first half when we were under pressure. In the second half we had to regroup and reorganise.

“David de Gea kept us in it and he’s one of the best keepers in world. It’s great to have stable person behind us to keep that play up.”

On Pogba’s dismissal, which will see him miss the derby with their city rivals next weekend, he added: “It’s a blow but the team have the players to adapt to that. Everyone’s got to work hard to get in the starting XI.”

Ross Barkley, whose contract expires at the end of the season, almost left the club for Chelsea in the summer but he u-turned on the move despite the clubs agreeing a £35m fee.

And, speaking after his first win yesterday, Allardyce said: “I’d like to think we can keep Barkley, unless somebody’s already done a deal for him.

“I am not daft enough to know in this game that those words and phone calls might not have already gone on. If we could get Ross Barkley to stay then nobody would be more delighted than me. Whether that is a possibility I do not know.”

For me it’s about getting him back in the squad first and seeing where we are from there.”

Everton have previously offered Barkley a new contract to stay at the club, but it was widely reported he did not want to recommit.

Isco: Madrid Are As Strong As Last Season

Featured Image

Real Madrid attacking midfielder, Isco insists the squad is not weaker than it was last season and believes they are still as strong.

Madrid continued their poor title defence against Athletic Bilbao, failing to capitalise on Barcelona dropping points earlier in the day.

Ronaldo and Toni Kroos were wasteful in the goalless draw at San Mames, with Ramos getting another red card.

Ronaldo had previously suggested Madrid are not as strong in 2017-18 following the departures of Alvaro Morata and James Rodriguez, however, attacker Isco did not buy into the argument post-match.

“It’s taking advantage a bit, when the results aren’t coming, to say that the squad is weaker,” he said.

“Our squad is just as competitive as last year, and we haven’t had all of the squad available yet because of injuries and that’s important.”

Dalic: Nigeria Is An Unknown Threat

Croatia’s head coach, Zlatko Dalic has revealed that the Super Eagles of Nigeria, are an unknown, and will approach them with caution.

The Fiery Ones are making the trip to the World Cup for the fourth time and have been drawn in Group D, alongside Argentina, Nigeria and Iceland.

Dalic’s men will face Gernot Rohr’s men, three-time African champions, for the first time on June 16 and he will approach the match with caution.

“The Nigerians are an unknown team and we have to study them well,” Dalic told Croatian Football website.

“They are the first in their qualifying group without defeat, they are young, with the German leader at the helm. We have time to prepare everything, including the choice of camp.

“We are starting with the analysis to be ready for the World Cup, and the most important thing is for our players to be healthy and true, and we will be looking for friendly rivals outside Europe, from Africa, because we all know most about Europeans. Argentina, but our strategy has to come down to strong rivals and strong matches.”

Pastore Slams PSG’s Focus After Strasbourg Loss

Featured Image

Javier Pastore is unforgiving of his evaluation of Paris Saint-Germain, after their shock 2-1 loss to Strasbourg.

The loss to lowly Strasbourg is PSG’s first loss in all competitions, with Nuno and Bahoken scoring on either side of Mbappe’s equaliser.

PSG held 73 percent of possession and 29 chances, but could do little to win and Pastore believes it should serve as a wake up call.

“Strasbourg had two chances,” said the midfielder. “We weren’t at 100 per cent from the start. We tried but we weren’t able to score the second goal.

“It’s no accident; it’s because they were very good. They had a very good defence.

“The goal is to finish first at the end of the campaign. We’ve taken a knock that will help us for the future.

“Today, we paid dearly for two moments for which we weren’t focused.”

David De Gea’s top drawer performance against Arsenal has prompted, Jose Mourinho to hail him as the best goalkeeper in the world.

United traveled to the Emirates Stadium and emerged victorious, with a Lingard brace coming after an early Valencia opener. Lacazette found the net for Arsenal, with the Gunners losing 3-1.

Arsenal had over thirty attempts in the match and De Gea was more than up to the task and delivered a record-tying appearance.

“I told him after the match – what I saw today was the best goalkeeper in the world,” the Portuguese told BT Sport.

“In big matches you need goalkeepers to be there for you, but all the effort from the players was magnificent.

“It was phenomenal game. I loved the way my team played and fought. But I have to also say that Arsenal played, in some periods, amazing, attacking football, creating difficulties for us.

“The plan was when they have to the ball we all have to defend, starting with the attacking players. When we have the ball, however, we had to counter-attack fast to score goals.

“Of course, they can say they had chances, but we fought and had a great goalkeeper, too.”
