Justice Ademola Sacked As NJC Shuns His Resignation Letter

Featured Image

The National Judicial Council (NJC) on Thursday said it had at the end of its 84th Meeting in Abuja, sacked Justices Adeniyi Ademola and Segun Tokode from the Federal High Court Bench over acts of misconduct.

This is coming barely a day after Justice Ademola had claimed to have voluntarily resigned.

Justices Adeniyi Ademola

Justices Adeniyi Ademola

He was accused of corrupt enrichment by the EFCC but was controversially discharged by the high court.

Justice Ademola, who was among eight superior court judges that were arrested after a “sting operation” the Department of State Service, DSS, conducted in October last year, had attempted to outsmart the NJC by voluntarily resigning from the bench late Wednesday night.

He swiftly leaked his resignation letter dated December 6 to the press around 12 midnight on Wednesday.

However, the NJC, in a statement that was signed by its Director of Information, Mr. Soji Oye, maintained that Justice Ademola’s action was belated.

Read the full NJC statement below.

The National Judicial Council, under the chairmanship of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, at its 84th Meeting which was held on December 6, 2017, recommended the compulsory retirement from office of Justice A. F. A. Ademola and Justice O. O. Tokode both of the Federal High Court for misconduct.

Mr. Ademola who had forwarded his notice of retirement on 10th October, 2017 to the Council against 9th April, 2018, when he will attain the mandatory retirement age of 65 years was recommended for compulsory retirement from office to President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, pursuant to the findings by the Council on the allegation contained in the petition written against His Lordship by a group of 8 persons under the name of Committee of Anambra State PDP House of Representatives Members-Elect alleging His Lordship of the following:-

· that His Lordship heard their Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/177/2015 which was adjourned for judgement on March 25, 2015;

· that on the adjourned date, His Lordship did not deliver the judgement but adjourned the case sine die, to await the decision of the Supreme Court on another matter on the same issue, on is the list of PDP candidates for Anambra State for the General Elections of 2015;

· that His Lordship speedily heard and delivered judgement in another case in Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/254/2015 filed later on the same issues, with intent to confer undue advantage on the Plaintiff who is from a family with which the Respondent has relationship;

· that the Certified True Copy (CTC) of the judgement ultimately given to the petitioners contained a paragraph that was not read in open Court by the Hon. Judge and that a phrase was altered, all to address an issue raised in the appeal that had already been filed by the Petitioner before the issuance of Certified True Copy (C T C);

· that some of the reasoning and conclusions of the Hon. Judge were summersaults;

· that the Respondent finally delivered judgement in the case on 8th July, 2016, five (5) months after the Supreme Court delivered the judgement he was awaiting contrary to the Constitutional provisions that judgements should be delivered within a period of 90 days.

· Though the Petitioners withdrew their petitions in accordance with to Regulation 16 of the National Judicial Council Judicial Discipline Regulations of 9th March, 2017, Council viewed His Lordship’s action of non-delivery of judgement within the stipulated time as misconduct contrary to Section 292 (1) (b) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, as amended and Rules 1.3 and 3.7 of the 2016 Revised Code of Conduct for Judicial Officers of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The public is hereby informed to disregard news circulating on some news media that Mr. Ademola has voluntarily retired. The purported voluntary retirement is clearly an afterthought as Council had taken action before his decision to forward any voluntary retirement letter.

Justice O. O. Tokode of the same Federal High Court was also recommended to President Muhammadu Buhari for compulsory retirement from office with immediate effect sequel to the findings of Council on the allegation contained in petitions forwarded by Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) and Abimbola Awogboro.

The Petitioners accused the Hon. Judge of misleading the Federal Judicial Service Commission and the National Judicial Council, by submitting six judgements he claimed to have personally conducted while practising as a lawyer; a pre-requisite for his application for appointment as a Judicial Officer, and was so appointed.

The Investigation Committee of Council however found that the Hon. Judge personally conducted only one of the six cases submitted. Therefore, Council decided to recommend his compulsory retirement and the refund of all salaries and allowances he earned since his purported appointment to the position of a Judge to the coffers of the Judiciary.

In the interim, the National Judicial Council in exercise of its power under paragraph 21 sub-paragraph (d) of the Third Schedule of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, as amended, has suspended Justices A. F. A. Ademola and O. O. Tokode from office with immediate effect.

The Council also issued serious warning letters to Justice A. N. Ubaka of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria for failure to deliver Ruling in Suit No. NICN/BEN/51/2014 within the time specified time by law.

The council did not accept the reasons given for failure to deliver the ruling within time.

The judge has also been placed on watch-list of the Council for the next one year.

Council also gave a warning letter to Justice Zainab Aliyu Sadat of the High Court of Niger State and placed her on the watch-list for three years for claiming that the Defendant in Suit No: NHSC/MN/46/2016 failed to make available authority cited by them after submission of the argument to her.

Council at the Meeting also decided to dismiss the petition written by Ali Modu Sheriff alleging that Justice A. Liman of the Federal High Court of corruption for his failure to honour the invitation of the Investigation Committee on the three occasions that he sat to investigate the matter.

Council exonerated Justice Simon Akpah Amogeda of the Federal High Court from corruption allegation by Ernest J. Henry, who could not substantiate his allegation.

The Council decided to write the Petitioner a warning letter for maligning the name of the Hon. Judge.

In addition, Council exonerated Justice F. I. Kola-Olalere of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria from any misconduct in the petition written against him by Samuel Atotuomah. Justice B. B. Kanyip of the same court was also exonerated of allegation of corruption written against him by Adebayo Jegede, who did not attend the Investigation Committee Panel to defend his allegation.

The Council decided to report him to the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee (LPDC) for the unfounded allegation of corruption and the use of crude and insultive language against the Hon. Judge in his petition.

The Petitions written against Justice Adama Iyayi-Laminkara, Chief Judge, Rivers State, Justice Maria Zukogi, Chief Judge, Niger State, Justice Eyo Effiom Ita, High Court, Cross River State, Justices S. A. Orugboyo and R. I. B. Adebiyi, High Court, Lagos State, were dismissed by the Council as all the petitioners withdrew them and Council found no serious issues for further consideration in the allegations.

Justice A. M. Lawal of Lagos State High Court was also issued a warning letter and placed on ‘watch-list’ for one year by the Council for unnecessary delay in delivering his ruling and giving his personal phone number to parties.

The petition written against Kadi Al-Hafis M. Abubakar of the Katsina State Sharia Court of Appeal by Ibrahim Mukhtar Mashi was dismissed by the Council for lack of merit.

Council also directed Justice Linda Amina Yarosi of the Customary Court of Appeal to resume duty from her sick leave immediately and placed her on ‘watch-list’ for 3 months.

All Judicial Officers placed on ‘watch-list’ of the Council will not be elevated or considered for special assignments during the period they are on the list.

Within that period, Council reserves the right to consider their suitability or otherwise to continue as Judicial Officers based on their performance.

Featured Image

Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo has won the Ballon d’Or 2017 award after beating the likes of Lionel Messi and Neymar to once again lift one of the biggest individual prizes in world football.

The Portuguese international was awarded the prestigious trophy in a ceremony in Paris on Thursday night, coming top of France Football’s 30-man shortlist which included Barcelona talisman Messi and PSG forward Neymar.

He led Real to glory in La Liga and the Champions League in 2017, as well as setting Champions League goal records with the most strikes in a calendar year (19) as well as becoming the first player to score in every group-stage game in a single season.

With two goals against Juventus in June’s 4-1 Champions League final win, Ronaldo also became the first player to score in three separate finals of the competition.

The former Manchester United star collected the Ballon d’Or for a fifth time – levelling Messi’s record – after also being named Fifa’s Mens World Player of the Year in a London ceremony in October.

The Fifa World Player of the Year award was merged in a partnership with France Football’s Ballon d’Or in 2010 and became known as the Fifa Ballon d’Or for the next six years, with the two awards having now split.

Ronaldo has won the Ballon d’Or on four other occasions – in 2008 with Manchester United, and in 2013, 2014 and 2016 with Real Madrid.

Ronaldo reacts to winning 2017 Ballon d’Or

“I feel very happy, it’s a fantastic moment in my career, I’ve been waiting for this for a long time.
“This year has been great, we won the Champions League and La Liga and, on a personal level, I was a top scorer in the Champions League.
“Trophies help win these awards and we have to thank my colleagues from Madrid and Portugal, it was very important for me.”

DSS Issues Important Statement On Recruitment Exercise

Featured Image

The Department of State Services (DSS) has cautioned Nigerians to be mindful of persons requesting money from them to get recruited into the Service.

The DSS said this while reacting to reports that some fraudulent Nigerians were extorting money from job seekers with the assurance of getting them enlisted into the Service.

DSS/SSS is Not Recruiting

The attention of the State Security Service (SSS) has once again been drawn to the illegal activities of some fraudulent persons and groups who extort money from unsuspecting members of the public with a promise to employ them into the Service.

The Service wishes to state for the umpteenth time that it is not currently employing or carrying out any form of exercise in that regard.

The public may note that in the event that the Service recruits, it does not charge money for that purpose.

The public is therefore, advised to be wary of these fraudulent persons and groups whose stock in trade has remained the spread of falsehood and engagement in impersonation.

The Service further warns that it will, in accordance with the law, not hesitate to deal decisively with anyone caught in the act of impersonating it.

While efforts have been sustained at uncovering the network of these fraudsters, the public is enjoined to pass relevant information relating to this to the nearest Service Command.

PENGASSAN Threatens Nationwide Strike, Issues 7-Day Ultimatum

Featured Image

The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) has issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Federal Government to address injustice and lawlessness in the oil and gas sector companies or face a nationwide strike from December 18.

The General Secretary of PENGASSAN, Mr Lumumba Okugbawa, issued the ultimatum in a statement on Thursday in Abuja.

According to him, this was imperative in order to address anti-labour issues and lawlessness by some indigenous oil and gas companies and marginal field operators by relevant agencies of government.

Okugnawa also said if this was not addressed properly, it would culminate in the shutting down of all oil and gas installations, including disruptions to fuel supply and distribution across the country.

The unionist said the anti-labour practice includes the termination of employment of any worker who indicated the willingness to belong to the union.

the statement read; “Those that are threatened and compelled to disown the union are then treated as slave workers within their own country.

“The case of Neconde Energy Ltd (of Nestoil Group of companies) is particularly worrisome as the issue of dignity in labour and infringement on workers’ rights to Freedom of Association is foreign to them.

“This has led to the mass sack of workers that joined the union and dehumanisation of some in total disregard to rule of engagement and the laws of the land.

“The actions of companies such as Neconde in the mass sack of Nigerian workers contribute in no small measure to the unending militancy in the Niger Delta.’’

NAN reports that he said Neconde had not only conducted itself as being above the provisions of extant laws and regulations guiding the operations of oil and gas companies in Nigeria, but also boasted that no government agency would call it to order.

“Having explored all options without getting the necessary understanding, and an apparent failure of relevant authorities of government to call to order these recalcitrant organisations especially Neconde, we are giving the Federal Government and its relevant agencies seven-days’ notice to embark on nationwide strike effective Dec. 18.

“If the government fails to direct the management of Neconde and other companies to recall our sacked members, as the only option to address this injustice and lawlessness.

“PENGASSAN appeals to all Nigerians to show understanding and to use this window to stockpile adequate quantity of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) and other petroleum products that will last them during the period as this strike will be indefinite.”

2018 UTME: JAMB Begins Candidates’ Registration In 700 Centres

Featured Image

The Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced the commencement of candidates’ registration for the 2018 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME).

The exam body also said the registration exercise – which will end in February 2018 – would take place in over 700 computer based test (CBT) centres in 36 states, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

2018 UTME: JAMB Announces New Date For Sale Of Application Forms

Fabian Benjamin, the spokesperson of JAMB, said this in a statement on Thursday evening, noting that candidates are advised to register on time before the available spaces in their towns of choice are exhausted.

The statement reads: “We will also want to state clearly that the board does not post candidates to any examination town other than the one chosen by the candidate at the point of registration.

“Candidates are, however, advised to register on time before the available spaces in their town of choice are exhausted.

“The registration exercise started on Wednesday 6th December, 2017 and as at today so many candidates have text their names using their phone numbers to 55019 and got their profile registered. After which they equally proceeded to the CBT centres for registration.

“The exercise from our tour of centres today clearly showed that this is one of the best registration regime of the board in recent time. It is easy, smooth and hitch free. This system is simple and convenient, candidates are requested to do it themselves to avoid being defrauded by anybody.

“Candidates can purchase the e -pins using their ATM or through Interswitch, Remita and other online platforms at the comfort of their homes.

“The Board offices are available for any challenge encountered by candidate while trying to obtain the e -pin to register for the 2018 exercise.

“Candidates who desire to register for the optional mock are also urged to do so as the platform will be withdrawn by the 30th of December, 2017 and only those who registered and indicated their interest on or before that time will be enlisted to participate.

“The board again reiterated its avowed commitment to conduct a hitch free examination and advance the cause of any Nigerian child desirous of qualitative tertiary education in the country. This is the beginning of the 2018 process.”

It would be recalled, JAMB had last month postponed the date for the sale of  2018 application forms due to the delay in meeting the agreed deadline by the publisher of the compulsory text meant for prospective candidates.

However, the board disclosed that the sale and registration for all candidates, including those from foreign countries, will now hold from December 6 to February 6, 2018.

Owen: Manchester Derby Will Not Decide Title

Featured Image

Manchester City could open an 11 point gap if they pick up a win against United this weekend, but Owen does not think it will decide the title race.

Guardiola’s men are flying high domestically, and are the only team without a loss and head to Old Trafford this weekend.

Last season saw the Etihad club surge to the top, but Chelsea pipped them to the title and Owen expects pressure on the Manchester outfit.

“I think City were quite a few points ahead last season and didn’t go on to win it and actually Chelsea went on to win it at an absolute breeze, so definitely nothing is going to be decided so soon,” Owen told Omnisport, speaking courtesy of Hublot.

“City at the moment look brilliant. They score a lot of goals and look sterner at the back. Manchester United [have made] a massive step forward from last season as well.

“I thought last season even though they had a couple of trophies in the bag and qualification for the Champions League, I still watched them thinking there was more in the tank and I think this season they’ve looked a lot better.

“Obviously, they’ve been strengthened mainly down the spine of the team – [Nemanja] Matic has been a brilliant signing.

“I think it will be a huge game but I don’t think it will be a decider so soon in the season.”

I’ve Got No Issues With Mauricio Pochettino – Danny Rose

Tottenham full-back Danny Rose says talk of bad blood between himself and manager Mauricio Pochettino is “getting silly”.

Rose admits he was disappointed to be substituted during Wednesday’s Champions League game against Apoel Nicosia but says there ‘”never will be an issue” between himself and Pochettino.

“This is getting silly now,” said Rose. “The manager said it was best I came off and I didn’t want to come off. That was it. I’ve seen already that people are saying we exchanged words. There is no issue between me and the manager, there has never been an issue.

“For the last three-and-a-half years, four years, the manager has been my biggest fan. He’s given me nothing but love and respect. There is no issue, there never will be an issue. People need to stop this, because it’s not welcomed.”

Slaves In Our Papa’s Land

Slaves In Our Papa’s Land, By Owei Lakemfa

Since 2011, the hoodlums, religious fanatics and terrorists coupled together in Libya by the ‘international community’ have subjected blacks, especially Nigerians, to torture, summary execution, rape and slavery. This has been an open secret which many Nigerian returnees from Libya have recounted countless times. The outcry today in our country and across the world is primarily because the CNN showed the actual auctioning of blacks for as little as $350 per person.

This piece was written by Owei Lakemfa. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

What is going on in Libya is doubtlessly horrendous, but not surprising, and is not new. I generally discountenance claims of outrage from Western countries and the United States who militarily and economically destroyed Libya and handed it to the current bandits running various sections of the country.

When I watched the United Nations (UN) Secretary General, Antonio Guterres wax lyrical about the slave trade and other criminal acts being perpetuated in Libya, as acts that “may amount to crimes against humanity”, I didn’t know whether to cry or laugh because the current situation in Libya was imposed through the instrumentality of the UN Resolution SC/10200 of March 17, 2011.

Civil war had broken out in Libya when in another attempt to remove President Moamar Ghadaffi, then President Barack Obama of the United States, and Prime Minister David Cameron of Britain, supported by France and the Arab League, had unleashed a well-trained and armed ‘opposition” on the country. At a time, these characters were termed the ‘democratic forces’ that will enthrone democracy, even when their major backers in the Gulf are dictators and monarchs who do not allow elections in their own countries.

Beyond claims of democracy and human rights, it was well known that America and its Western allies had their sights on Libya’s rich oil reserves. The war had begun as “protests”, especially in Benghazi. Arms had quickly appeared in the “protests”, and when in the course of the war the government had the upper hand, the sponsors of the violence decided to take direct action to give the ‘opposition’ victory over the government, and as it has turned out, to destroy Libya itself.

Under the UN, Ghadaffi was accused of bombing parts of Libya and a case was made to “protect civilians.” The UN then banned Libya from using its airforce, and authorised other countries to effect this ban. With this, the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) moved in to bomb the Libyan Armed Forces and allow the hoodlums to seize the country. It also bombed Ghadaffi’s convoy, injuring him and allowing him to be captured and summarily executed.

Apart from seizing Libyan asset across the world, imposing an arms embargo and completely isolating the Libyan government, the UN also played a very dangerous card, which is partly responsible for the criminal handling of blacks in Libya today, including selling them as slaves. The Libyan ‘opposition’ had claimed that Ghadaffi had over the years expended huge resources on Africa and encouraged blacks to work in Libya. It claimed that as a result, the blacks were fighting on the side of Ghadaffi and that many were racing across the continent to join Ghadaffi. The UN propagandists labelled these blacks as “mercenaries” and said it “Deplores the continuing flows of mercenaries into the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya and calls upon all Member States… to prevent the provision of armed mercenary personnel to the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya.” As a result, all blacks found in Libya were designated “mercenaries” and tortured, shot, raped, kidnapped and made to carry out forced labour. The slave trade is an extension of forced labour.

Tragically, Nigeria had supported the plot to destroy the legitimate Libyan government and backed all the UN resolutions, including the one that designated Ghadaffi supporters, especially blacks as ‘mercenaries’. Our then Nigerian permanent representative in the United Nations, Mrs. Joy Ugwu, in supporting the plot against Libya, had argued that “The current State of affairs (in Libya) leaves an indelible imprint on the conscience and compels us to act”. After the Resolution was passed with Nigeria hypocritically ‘abstaining’, Mrs. Ugwu declared: “Today, we have sent an unequivocal message to the Libyan people that the dignity and safety of every man, woman and child is paramount.”

So with our country’s active connivance, NATO moved in to destroy Libya and we are left with its aftermath, including trading Nigerians in that country as sex or economic slaves. Libya became a failed state with no security, armed force or government, food and fuel shortages, unpaid salaries, kidnapping, rape and slave trade.

Libya is a conflict economy in which everything including human beings are commodified; it is ruled by violence and the persons who can muster the most violence gets away with anything. The allocation of resources is by violence and appropriation is by seizing what others have produced and defending what you have produced.

I have read that the Nigeria Foreign Affairs Ministry says it is taking up slavery and related issues with the Libyan government, and I ask, which of the five governments – the Government of National Accord (GNA) or the Islamist National Salvation Government (the two in Tripoli), the one in Tobruk, the new one around Sirte or the one in Benghazi run by renegade General Khalifa Hafter? It depends on which government controls a particular slave market.

Generally as Nigerians, we have to re-examine ourselves, stop the propaganda, and ask how we have produced citizens who are so desperate that they embark on suicidal journeys. How did we produce fellow Nigerians who borrow money to pay traffickers and cross the desert, where some perish, cross into Libya where they are prostituted, tortured and enslaved and then get into leaky, unsafe boats in which many perish? All to get to Italy, which itself may be the beginning of a punishing journey to other European countries, where there are no shelter or jobs waiting for them and where they are treated at best, as second class citizens. Quite simply, the African ruling class has abdicated its responsibilities and failed the people. Africans are simply enslaved in their own land.

As solution, first, we have to do all that is possible to bring back all Nigerians in Libya, including those who cannot freely leave because they are the property of some Libyans; we have to devise means of freeing them to return home. We also need to make the bandits in Libya know that Nigeria will defend its citizens and that we will come after all those who kill or dehumanise Nigerians. We need to realise that no matter the rhetoric, the West will not put its citizens in danger in order to stop the slave trade. In the long term, Nigeria needs to lead an African force to retake Libya from the bandits to whom the Obama and Cameron governments gave Libya.

It has come has a good news that Nigeria’s most respected Awards for pop music and urbane culture, The Headies, will roll out the carpet in honour of musicians, performers, producers, writers, and other professionals who did well in year 2017 on March 24, 2018.

Since inception in 2006, The Headies was held annually in March for many years before the committee moved the event to the last quarter of every year.

Now, according to The Executive Producer Ayo Animashaun, Nigeria’s longest-running music honours event will return to Quarter 1, as well as add new categories to reflect the realities of today’s music and entertainment industry. This year, the year-in-review has also been reviewed to adequately accommodate more music materials released between July 2016 to December 2017. Subsequently, the year in review will be January to December of each year.

Based on the studied schedule of releases, and the availability of talents, the Committee has decided the best period to host our Awards is now March.

In his words;

‘We want our nominees, artistes, entertainment industry practitioners and enthusiasts’ to have an amazing time and music fans to have even more fun. This is why we have taken every decision; from the new date, choice of venue, categories, and so on’, said Animashaun, who is also the founder of Hip TV.

The four new categories are Headies Viewer’s Choice, Industry Brand Supporter, Best Performer, and Best Song Writer of the year. The Viewers’ choice prize will give full power to fans through a voting system that lets them decide absolutely; the Brand Supporter Award will recognize brands who are supporting the industry at a time when opportunities are scarce; the Best Performer will reward the Artistes whose stagecraft, showmanship and performance routines are exceptionally conceptualized and executed; while the Best Song Writer finally brings to the forefront the talents who compose the lyrics and melodies for the songs we celebrate.

The Headies will now have 24 categories of awards, with each winner receiving 21 carat gold-plated Plaque, and the stamp of excellence from one of Africa’s most respected music awards.

FG Will Not Increase Fuel Pump Price — Lai Mohammed

Featured Image

The Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, on Wednesday dispelled the rumour that the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) would be increased.

The minister made this known  while addressing state house correspondents at the end of the Federal Executive Council (FEC), which was presided over by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.

He said that the Minister of Petroleum (State), Dr Ibe Kachikwu, would have been at the briefing but had to go for an urgent meeting in order to resolve the petroleum scarcity in the country.

“Government has no intention at all to increase the pump price of PMS; the minister has assured the council that there is enough products for the next one month even to the end of January,’’ the minister stated.

According to him, there is usually more demand for petrol product during the yuletide which explains the scarcity of the product during the period.

Mohammed said that the council had given a marching order to the Petroleum Minister (State) that the fuel crisis in the country should not last beyond the weekend.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) had on Monday in Abuja reiterated that there was no plan to increase the prices of petroleum products.

In a statement, Ndu Ughamadu, the corporation’s Group General Manager, Public Affairs Division, said there was no plan to increase prices at the ex-depot level and pump price ahead of the forthcoming yuletide.

“The NNPC has the full commitment of all downstream stakeholders, including petroleum marketers and industry unions to cooperate in achieving zero fuel scarcity this season and beyond.

“We enjoin motorists not to engage in panic buying or indulge in the dangerous practice of stocking petroleum products in jerry cans at home.

“The Petroleum Products Marketing Company and NNPC Retail Limited are fully geared up to ensure that motorists enjoy uninterrupted access to petrol throughout the nation,’’ Ughamadu said.

NHIS: FG Approves Enrollment Of NYSC Corps Members In Health Insurance Scheme

Featured Image

The Federal Government has approved the enrollment of all members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

The announcement was made by the Director-General of the NYSC, Brig. Gen. Sule Kazaure, at the NYSC Orientation Camp in Ede, Osun State on Thursday during his visit to inspect the corps members and facilities at the camp.

He said this would afford corps members to visit hospitals for treatment anytime they were sick during their service year and to prevent avoidable deaths.

Kazaure said, “The Federal Government has approved that corps members should be enrolled for the NHIS. I received the call last night and it is a good thing.”

The DG had earlier inspected a laboratory built by a corps member, Kayode Agarawu, who is serving with Eyiowu-Awi Pharmaceuticals Limited. The owner of the pharmaceuticals company, Alhaji Atanda Babatunde, sponsored the project.

Kazaure also inspected the closed-circuit television cameras installed to monitor movements in and out of the camp in order to beef up security and ensure the safety of the corps members.

In his remarks, the Osun State Coordinator of the NYSC, Mr. Emmanuel Attah, also lauded the corps member and his employer for contributing their quotas to the development of humanity and the camp.

Ajax Announce Signing Of Perr Schuurs From Sunday Oliseh’s Club Fortuna Sittard

Featured Image

Perr Schuurs has agreed a deal to join Ajax from Fortuna Sittard on 1 January, signing a contract until 30 June 2022.

The centre-back had been of interest to Liverpool, and had a trial with the club in May.

Perr Schuurs has agreed a four-and-a-half-year contract at the Amsterdam ArenA, but will be loaned back to second-tier side Fortuna for the remainder of the season when the deal goes through on January 1.

The defender was named captain of Fortuna ahead of the 2017-18 season, at the time just 17 years old, having impressed in his debut campaign with the first team.

Schuurs had been touted as a candidate to strengthen Liverpool’s under-fire defence, but he felt Ajax was the right fit despite talking to other suitors.

“It is a dream to be able to play at a top club like Ajax,” he said in a statement on Fortuna’s official website.

“There were several clubs interested and I also spoke with other clubs, but my feeling at Ajax was immediately very good. I think that’s important.”

Ajax director of football Marc Overmars said: “He knows what is required of him to be able to reach the top. The fact that he is already captain at Fortuna Sittard at this young age also says something about his personality.

“We are pleased that we have been able to sign this great Dutch talent.”
