Salah Beats Moses, Mane, Others To Win BBC African Footballer Of The Year Award

Egypt and Liverpool forward, Mohamed Salah, has won the prestigious BBC African Player of the Year award for 2017 on Monday, December 11.

The in-form striker defeated the likes of Super Eagles star, Victor Moses, Gabon’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Guinea’s Naby Keita, and Sadio Mane of Senegal to win the award.

The Egypt international, who has racked up a double figure goal tally since moving to the Premier League from Roma, was presented with his award by Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp at the club’s Melwood training ground.

“It’s always a special feeling when you win something,” Salah told BBC Sport, following the announcement by television presenter Mimi Fawaz. “You feel like you did a great year, so I am very happy.”

And Klopp added: “It’s well deserved. The good thing is that he is still young, there is a lot of space for improvement, a lot of potential still that we can work on, but that’s how it should be.”

Salah’s form at club level as been every bit as impressive as it has in internationals.

In Italy, he scored 15 goals and made 11 others as he helped Roma finish second in Serie A, their best league placing in seven years, prior to joining Liverpool and scoring 13 times in his first 16 league games.

“I would like to thank my Liverpool team-mates and I also had a good season with Roma so I have to thank my team-mates there and my team-mates in the national team,” said Salah.

Previous winners of the award include Didier Drogba, George Weah and Yaya Toure.

#EndSARS Is Inadequate: The Entire Nigeria Police Force Is Rotten By Churchill Okonkwo

CLICK here to read more opinion articles

The rot in the entire Nigeria Police Force (NPF) is terrifying. The current agitation for the scrapping of SARS is like cutting off one wild branch of an evil tree and expecting the new sprout to be different or the evil tree to die. Without necessarily downplaying the importance of the current protest and agitations, I dare say that #EndSARS is too narrow and any outcome will be inconsequential in changing the character of NPF. What the hawk gives birth to will not fail to carry chickens.

This piece was written by Churchill Okonkwo. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

With that preamble, it is obvious that only radical and sweeping changes will transform the Nigerian Police. The fact is that the Nigeria Police Force, as a whole, is murderous, corrupt, ineffective, lazy, criminally-minded and worst of all, not ready for reform. The present NPF denotes guttering that had corroded, vibrated in the wind, half held by the brackets but not willing to fall. For a new Nigeria Police Force to rise, this present disgrace must fall. Unfortunately, #EndSARS will have an insignificant effect on a Police Force that was recently rated the worst in the world.

#EndSARS: Drama As Police Fight Back With #SupportSARS – And It’s Trending

The worst of the NPF is the culture of see-no-evil, hear-no-evil and cover-ups. Nobody is policing the police in Nigeria. That’s why they can beat up and kill suspects at will and are not afraid of being arrested. In their twisted minds, they are challenging, “who is going to tame us? We are the Nigerian police and we are in charge.” Unfortunately for Nigerians, the legislature that should be checking the excesses of NPF keep mum because they are the major beneficiary.

Refusing to acknowledge that the degree of rottenness in the Nigeria Police Force is beyond scrapping of SARS certainly means that the current protests and rallies will come to nothing. Before this momentum fizzles out, therefore, Nigerians should define clear goals and sweeping demands that will have a lasting impact on the overall operations of the Nigeria Police Force.

The convener #EndSARS, Mr. Segun Awosanya, said that SARS has “outlived its usefulness and now constitutes a clear and present threat to the safety, well-being, and welfare of most Nigerians.” The truth; the entire NPF notorious for extrajudicial murder (e.g., APO Six), wrongful search and arrest, registration of false cases, conducting illegal operations and worst, disregarding the directive of the IG of police to dismantle illegal roadblocks has outlived its usefulness.

Disbandment of SARS may be soothing to their victim for a night, but thousands of Nigerians will suffer the same or worse abuse under the operation of NPF. It is encouraging, though, to see Nigerians are getting involved and flooding social media with tales of extrajudicial killings, torture, wanton arrests for bribes and other menacing conducts. But, it is not by staring hard that one sees the road. We have been through this circus before.

In January 2005, Tafa Balogun was forced to resign and was replaced by Sunday Ehindero, who scrapped the notorious “Operation Fire-for-Fire,” stressing the need to move away from “authoritarian and symbolic justice” to a more accountable and responsive force. A new slogan, “To serve and protect with integrity,” was chosen to reflect that shift.

That cosmetic approach did not give Nigerians a police force that served or protected the citizen with integrity. If it did, we would not be talking about ending SARS, which is no different than “Operation Fire-for-Fire.” Another bitter truth; the Nigerian Police cannot give us what they don’t have. The rank and file of Nigerian Police have brutality and abuse of power in their DNA. So, how is anything going to change? The madmen of SARS are dancing to the sound of the drums beaten for them by the leadership as of the Nigeria Police Force. To stop the dance, we have to stop those beating the drums.

Police Vows To Punish Erring Personnel As Nigerians Protest, Give FG 21 Days To #EndSARS

Calling for the immediate dissolution of SARS will get a boost from the likes Atiku seeking cheap political attention. However, it will be more helpful if serving and former public office holders like the governors, ministers and senators will allow the Nigerian Police to serve and protect the public. When the instrument of law protection turns into an instrument of lawlessness and protecting big men and the wealthy, you begin to wonder what #EndSARS will achieve.

Instead of being an instrument to enforce the rule of law, the Nigerian Police is increasingly seen as a pliable tool in the hands of unscrupulous politicians, business moguls and many unpatriotic Nigerians. You only need to observe the number of policemen attached to politicians and these business moguls to realize that we are a long way off.

This troubling departure from what a law enforcement agency should be is all very self-evident to anyone that has used the hashtag #EndSARS. It is not the weaker sections, which includes women, children, old people, the poor and handicapped – the law abiding citizens – that need the police more than other sections of the society? The present energy we are spending in #EndSARS at a time when progress is urgently needed in transforming the entire police should be redirected.

My point, therefore, is that we should not limit our protest to the narrow and insignificant demand for the scrapping of SARS or for the name of the operation to be changed. It’s a waste of time and resources. The scrapping of SARS will, if anything, have a marginal impact. Is there anyone out there who believes that our police force is not in need of deep-seated repair?

The only thing that will change the impunity and rot in the NPF is a radical shift from the status quo.  To change the rot in the NPF, we need radical measures from within the force starting with overhauling the leadership. We need a radical leadership shakeup to be spearheaded by a special crack team, trained abroad and brought back with the singular purpose of overhauling the NPF.  It will need the support of the executive and legislative arms of government.

Maybe it’s time to think of Police Crime and Corruption Commission (PCCC). We need a strong and well-financed Special Prosecutor who is appointed and reports to the Police Service Commission and the not the Police Inspector-General. Until we get an independent and fearless prosecutor working with a crack team at the top to clear the rot in the leadership as well as the rank and file of the Nigerian Police, #EndSARS will fizzle out like the rest of online driven protests in Nigeria with fuzzy goals.

#EndSARS: Police Defends SARS – Those Who Want It Scrapped “May Likely Be Armed Robbers”

#EndSARS Campaign: Simi, Adekunle Gold, Reekado Banks Share Bitter Stories Of Their Encounter With SARS

The activities of the entire NPF are stinking like a decaying corpse buried in a shallow grave. The Nigerian Police is the head of the corpse, while SARS is just the feet. To be effective in stopping the stench; we have to dig from the head and not the feet. Changing the Nigerian police culture of brutality, indiscipline, non-professionalism, corruption, etc. will not emerge from the narrow cause of campaigning for scrapping of SARS.

In the final analysis, the Nigerian Police is rotten, #EndSARS is too narrow to be effective. Overhauling the entire Nigeria Police Force, #OverhaulNPF should be the reasonable goal.

Manchester United Invite Vancouver Whitecaps Wonderkid Alphonso Davies For A Trial

Featured Image

Manchester United have reportedly invited highly-rated Vancouver Whitecaps youngster Alphonso Davies for a trial with the club.

Alphonso Davies is said to be interesting a number of Europe’s top clubs but Adam Cook of CTV Edmonton claims that the Whitecaps are yet to give their approval to the move.

Davies made his debut for Vancouver Whitecaps in MLS at the age of 15 and is regarded as one of the brightest young talents in North America.

And he has already made his mark on the international stage with a series of impressive displays for the Canada senior team in last summer’s CONCACAF Gold Cup.

He has scored three goals in six games for his country, finishing the tournament as joint-leading scorer and being named in the competition’s best XI.

Davies’ road to the MLS has been a difficult one, as explained by The Sun’s Duncan Wright: “He was born in a refugee camp in Ghana after his parents fled the civil war in Liberia.”

Police Vows To Punish Erring Personnel As Nigerians Protest, Give FG 21 Days To #EndSARS

Featured Image

The police high command has vowed to investigate all complaints and allegations against the operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS); with the assurance that the big stick will be wielded on those found guilty of professional misconduct.

According to the Deputy Inspector-General of Police (Operations), Joshak Habila, any officer indicted for human rights abuses and professional misconduct would be sanctioned and eased out of the Police Force.

#EndSARS: Nigeria Police Launches #SupportSARS | Counters Allegations Of Brutality

He assured Nigerians that the complaints against SARS on the social media were being compiled by the Force Public Relations unit for further investigation and action.

Habila made this known while speaking with protesters led by Deputy National Chairman, Police Community Relations Committee, Sanusi Ajiya, who marched to the Force headquarters, Abuja, after a rally at the Eagle Square in support of the SARS on Monday.

He said: “All allegations against SARS will be investigated. They are being put together by the Force Public Relations Officer.

“The reason we are doing this is because we believe SARS has something to offer, but anyone found wanting will be taken out of the Force.

“The PCRC has been telling us some of the wrongs we did and today, they are saying they won’t want SARS to be thrown away.

“The IG is rebranding SARS; those that have violated people’s rights or killed won’t go unpunished.”

The assurance by the DIG is coming on a day Nigerians trooped out nationwide to protest the alleged brutality, intimidation, extortion and killings of innocent citizens by the police unit and called for its immediate scrapping.

The convener #EndSARS #ReformPoliceNG, Segun Awosanya, who spoke during the rally, disclosed that Nigerians have spent the last one week highlighting the travails many of them have suffered in the hands of SARS.

Allegations of brutality, extra-judicial killings, torture, wanton arrests for bribes and other menacing conducts have since flooded the internet, with scores of citizens calling the police department “a cluster of criminals in uniform.”

READ MORE HERE: #EndSARS: Nigerians Say ‘Enough Is Enough’

Awosanya further noted that the police unit has outlived its usefulness and now constitutes a clear and present threat to the safety, well-being and welfare of most Nigerians.

Consequently, the group is giving the authorities 21 days within which to meet these demands failing which they will be compelled to resort to other measures to embarrass them into taking action.

They listed their demands as follows during the lead rally at the Unity Fountain Abuja:

1. We demand for an outright scrapping of the entire SARS unit across the country. Its members have become engrossed in crime, murder, brutality, extortion and disrespect for the rule of law in a manner that makes any attempt at reform a waste of time.

2. We demand the constitution of a panel by the Police Services Commission to reform the Nigerian Police in its entirety. The agenda must include provisions for better training of police officers; provision of better equipment and firearms; better welfare including housing, insurance, prompt payment of salaries and pensions etc; establishment of a code of conduct and strict compliance thereto as well as strong disciplinary measures for any officer who violates the code of conduct.

3. We also demand a public hearing at the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to enable Nigerians to table their grievances before our elected representatives as well as the submission of memoranda on reforms of the Nigerian Police including recommendations on the amendment of laws to ensure a more efficient police force.

4. We demand thorough investigations into complaints filed against SARS officers. We demand that such officers be identified and immediately brought to justice. In some cases, we will provide video and pictorial evidence against officers who have been seen to be involved in such acts of brutality and extortion.

Antonio Conte believes that his team will “have to be at 120%” in order to stand a chance of overcoming Barcelona in the last-16 stage of the Champions League.

Chelsea were paired with Barcelona in Monday’s draw, with the first fixture to take place at Stamford Bridge on February 20.

Conte was keen to stress that his immediate focus was on the Premier League, but the Italian conceded that his team had been handed a very difficult draw against the La Liga leaders.

“We must be ready to play at home. Impossible to see an advantage of playing at home first. Against Barca you have to be at 120%,” Conte told reporters.

“Our priority is the league and to stay up and fight for the Champions League place – at this moment. When it is the moment to play Barcelona then we will start thinking about it.”

West Brom Manager Alan Pardew Hints At Spending In January

Featured Image

Alan Pardew has revealed he will look at striking options this January transfer window if West Brom’s problems in front of goal continue, with the Baggies having scored just 12 goals in 16 Premier League games this campaign.

“January is not far away and we are going to have to look at that area if we can’t increase our goalscoring ratio,” Pardew said, as quoted by the Telegraph.

“It’s not great and we need to improve on it. We have a difficult Christmas programme but if we can get a couple of wins it may look different.”

Pardew has quickly realised the attacking options are limited. “I’ve used every offensive player I’ve got pretty much, and I still haven’t found a moment,” Pardew said. “My teams have always managed to score. Sometimes you could question my defensive record, but my teams have always got goals.”

Thibaut Courtois Give Chelsea Contract Renewal Hope

Featured Image

Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois insists he wants an agreement over his future before the end of the season and admits he will “consider all options”.

Thibaut Courtois, whose contract is due to expire in 18 months, recently decided to postpone talks on an extension but confirms he is “happy” at the London club amid reports linking him with a move to Real Madrid.

The 25-year old says a decision on his future may be influenced by personal circumstances with his two children living in Spain with his former girlfriend.

I want to take my time,’ Courtois, 25, told Belgian TV show Stadion on VTM.

‘Of course there’s the situation with my children.

‘I love my children to death. When you miss them, you are sometimes wondering, “shouldn’t I play in Spain in the next few years?”

‘But I’m happy here. I don’t see a reason why I wouldn’t sign a new deal.

‘There’s no pressure. I want to have an agreement before the end of season.

‘It’s not the right moment to make decisions. Not for me, not for Chelsea. In a few months we’ll sit around the table again.’

We Can’t Always Rely On Vincent Kompany

Featured Image

Pep Guardiola has admitted that his team cannot count on Vincent Kompany for any lengthy period of time due to his injury problems.

Vincent Kompany was withdrawn at half time against Manchester United having picked up another injury during the first half

City still went on to register a record 14th consecutive Premier League win, but Guardiola suggested that he could be forced to do business in the January transfer window in order to cover for Kompany.

“Vinnie is always like this – unfortunately we can’t count on him for a long time,” he told Sky Sports News.

Guardiola also refuted suggestions from opposite number Jose Mourinho that his players went down easily during the derby, adding: “It’s not true that my players go down easily. That is not an argument I believe.”
