NBS: Four Million Nigerians Became Jobless In 2017

Featured Image

An analysis of the unemployment report for the third quarter released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has revealed that between January and September this year, a total number of 4.07 million Nigerians became unemployed.

The NBS stated this in an “Unemployment and Under Employment Report from 1st quarter to third quarter 2017’’ released on Friday in Abuja.

In the report made available to pressmen, the bureau revealed that the number of Nigerians that became unemployed rose from 11.92 million in the first quarter of this year to 13.58 million and 15.99 million in the second and third quarters respectively.

The bureau added that between the second quarter and third quarter, the number of economically active or working age population (15 – 64 years of age) increased from 110.3 million to 111.1 million.

The NBS report said the increasing unemployment and underemployment rates imply that although Nigeria’s economy is officially out of recession, domestic labor market is still fragile and economic growths in the past two quarters in 2017 have not been strong enough to provide employment in Nigeria’s domestic labor market.

It reads in part, “The labor force population increased from 83.9 million in Q2 2017 to 85.1 million in Q3 2017. The total number of people in full-time employment (at least 40 hours a week) declined from 52.7 million in Q2 2017 to 51.1 million in Q3 2017.

“The unemployment rate increased from 14.2 per cent in Q4 2016 to 16.2 per cent in Q2 2017 and 18.8 per cent in Q3 2017.

“The number of people within the labor force who are unemployed or underemployed increased from 13.6 million and 17.7 million respectively in Q2 2017, to 15.9 million and 18.0 million in Q3 2017.

“Total unemployment and underemployment combined increased from 37.2 per cent in the previous quarter to 40 per  cent in Q3 2017.”

It said during the third quarter of this year, 21.2 per cent of women within the labor force that were between the ages of 15 years and 64 years and willing, able, and actively seeking work were unemployed, compared with 16.5 per cent of men within the same period.

The NBS noted in the report that in the third quarter of this year,16.4 per cent of rural and 23.4 per cent of urban dwellers within the labor force were unemployed. It added that the rate of unemployment is increasing at a slightly faster rate for urban dwellers than it was for their rural counterparts.

Buhari: I Saw Unbelievable Things When I Became Nigeria’s President

Featured Image

President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday said that some of the things he saw when he assumed office as Nigeria’s President in 2015 were unbelievable.

Buhari’s spokesman, Femi Adeshina, quoted his principal as saying this when he received the Governance Support Group at the Presidential Villa, Abuja on Friday.

He said, “Some of the things I saw here were unbelievable. I still shudder and wonder how a country can survive under such abuses. “It is only by an act of God that we survived.”

“I want you to maintain your steadfastness. We have gone through the worst of the times. We lost elections three times and I learnt a lot along the way.”

Buhari told his supporters that he was aware of the personal risks and investments that brought in the All Progressives Congress-led administration.

He added, “I can never forget your sacrifices and I am grateful for all. You never gave up when things were bleak, and we needed to survive. I can’t express my gratitude enough.”

“In spite of the environment you found yourself, you kept believing and pushing. Some of you were really exposed to risks. My consolation is that you voluntarily threw in your lot with me.”

“Some of you exposed yourself so much, and I knew it. I urge you to still stick to your principled ways of doing things and our country will be the better for it.”

#FuelScarcity: Fayose Calls For Buhari’s Resignation As Nigerians Cry Out

Featured Image

Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to resign over the “nonchalant attitude” of the Federal Government towards ending the fuel scarcity being experienced across the country.

The governor said it was unfortunate that the fuel scarcity was biting harder under the watch of the president as the Minister of Petroleum.

He maintained that the All Progressives Congress-led federal government was punishing Nigerians with fuel scarcity so as to achieve its planned raise of petrol pump price from N145 to not less than N185 per litre.

In a press release issued on Friday by his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, the governor said the only way to rescue Nigeria “from being brought down completely is to vote out Buhari and his APC in 2019”.

He said: “I warned Nigerians before President Buhari was elected and I am telling Nigerians now that the only option to rescue our country from being brought down completely is to vote out Buhari and his APC

“Already, fuel is being sold officially at between N180 and N200 at petrol stations across the country.

“It is sad that this Buhari’s APC government had to choose this Christmas and New Year period to ground Nigeria with the fuel scarcity that it deliberately orchestrated.

“It is obvious that the president has failed in all ramifications and he needs to do Nigerians a favour by relinquishing the portfolio of minister of petroleum.”

“Like I said a few days ago, what the federal government is doing is to create scarcity so that Nigerians will be willing to buy at any price, provided the product is made available.

“It was to achieve this planned increment of petrol pump price that they restricted supply of petrol to NNPC alone.”

Meanwhile, Nigerians have begun to take to social media to vent their chagrin on the ongoing fuel scarcity all over the country.

With the hashtag #FuelScarcity, Nigerians are presumably requesting for Buhari’s resignation, adding that he has failed the nation.

The police chief, who said this during a meeting with SARS commanders at the Force Headquarters, Abuja on Friday, added that the Nigeria Police Force under his leadership was worried by the clamour by some Nigerians that the unit be scrapped.

According to him, they are only allowed to conduct stop-and-search operation on roads when necessary.

He added that such operation must be with the permission of Commissioner of SARS or Deputy Commissioner and Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of operations in the commands they are answerable to.

Any operation conducted by the operatives, according to the police boss, must be in a “non-discriminatory, proportional, fair and accountable manner.”

The measures, he said, were as a result of the police administration’s response  to the yearnings and demands of modern policing.

“In demonstration of good faith to the aspiration of the Nigerian populace, I have given mandate to the IGP’s Monitoring Units and ‘X’ Squad and other oversight units of the Force to monitor the activities of the SARS operatives, while in the same vein, citizens are encouraged to avail the police ways to improve SARS operations across the nation,” he added.

Rafa Benitez Confident Newcastle Will Make Signings In January

Featured Image

Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez says he is confident club owner Mike Ashley will deliver on targets in the January transfer window…

“We have to do things as quick as possible. I have the belief and confidence that Mike Ashley, by January 15 to 20, will have everything done. I have confidence that he will do it.

“In terms of the transfer window we don’t have any agreement with anyone. At the moment we are progressing trying to be closer but I don’t know the budget that I have.

“In terms of names in the press, some of them are impossible for us, so the reality is that we have to understand that we have to keep focused on football.

“The scout’s department are working on names and I have had conversations with Lee [Charnley] and we know we are trying to do things, but it’s still nothing finished.”

Despite Newcastle’s run of form, Benitez is hopeful the team will soon turn their fortunes around but admits the results have been concerning.

“We were doing well, but maybe this was our problem that maybe we were doing so well that everybody was expecting that we could be at the top of the table, more or less,” Benitez said.

Last month Sevilla offered Eduardo Berizzo their “maximum support” in his battle against cancer.

They hope to name his replacement soon after the winter break.

A club statement read: “The Board of Directors has taken the decision to dismiss the coach of the first team, Eduardo Berizzo , due to the team’s bad run.

“Sevilla FC would like to express their gratitude to Eduardo Berizzo for his professionalism and dedication shown in the performance of his work, as well as for the good treatment given to all members of the club since his arrival.”

Wednesday’s 3-1 defeat at Real Sociedad was their fourth successive match without a win across all competitions leaving them fifth in the table.

Former Barcelona head coach Luis Enrique has been linked with the manager’s job in recent days

Allegri: Dybala Needed To Rest

Featured Image

Massimiliano Allegri has revealed that his decision to bench Paulo Dybala, is due to his need for rest.

The 24-year-old started the Serie A season with a bang, but has only scored two goals since September in the league.

Dybala started the Coppa Italia win over Genoa, scoring the first goal and assisting the second.

Allegri hinted Dybala could return to the bench despite impressing in midweek.

“I’m happy that Paulo Dybala was able to find the back of the net in the cup against Genoa,” Allegri told a pre-match news conference.

“Paulo has played in 38 matches this year, more than a lot of other players, so it’s not unusual if sometimes he has been on the bench.

“Federico Bernardeschi has grown a lot and has always been decisive when he’s played, against Genoa he had a good game, especially in the first half. The other lads who came in for the match also did well.

“Buffon, De Sciglio and Howedes are out for tomorrow’s game. [Mario] Mandzukic and [Juan] Cuadrado have worked with the team and could be available against Roma. I will decide today after the training session.

“Those that I have decided will play are Wojciech Szczesny, Medhi Benatia, Giorgio Chiellini, Alex Sandro and Gonzalo Higuain.”

Vertonghen: Spurs Can Bridge City Gap

Featured Image

Tottenham defender, Jan Vertonghen is quite confident they can close the gap to PL leaders, Manchester City.

Spurs are currently seventh on the standings, and are 21 points behind City, after their 4-1 loss to Guardiola’s side.

Even though Tottenham are closer in points to Crystal Palace, Vertonghen is confident of closing the gap to City.

“We could and should have been closer and I think we can reduce the gap definitely,” the 30-year-old defender told ESPN.

“There’s a bit of frustration. Not just for us – for other teams as well probably. The gap reflects the strength of City but I don’t think it reflects our strength.

“I still think we’re stronger than last year. We just have to get that run going, hopefully around Christmas.

“Obviously we lost 4-1 and City played very well but we can – and will – do a lot better in the next couple of games. We’ve got a lot of guys coming back from injuries – there’s still a couple out of course – but I think we’re looking very good at the moment.

“A bit of luck is missing this year, but only Kyle Walker left us from that team [last season] and I see no reason we can’t do the same again.”

Guardiola: Referees Must Protect Players

Featured Image

Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola believes a referee’s first job is to protect players, after teenager Phil Foden was ruled out for over a month with ligament damage.

City were on the end of harsh tackles against Tottenham, with Sterling and De Bruyne recipients of tackles from Kane and Alli.

In the EFL cup clash against Leicester, with Foden hobbling off in stoppage time.

Mourinho accused City players of simulation, but Guardiola feels protecting players is the first job of a referee.

“He’s injured, not good,” Guardiola said of Foden. “In the next fixtures he will not be able to play.

“We were lucky with Rash [Sterling] and Kevin De Bruyne in the last game against Tottenham. Really, really lucky.

“We were not lucky with Phil against Leicester. It’s a ligament. He will be out for a term.

“I accept the referees have to be careful about the diving players. Okay, keep going with that. But keep going as well and be careful to protect the players. The most important thing is protecting the players, that is the first target for the referees.”

Brighton Might Need To Break Transfer Record To Sign A Striker- Chris Hughton

Featured Image

Chris Hughton has hinted that Brighton may have to break their transfer record to sign a new striker in the January transfer window.

The club have only scored 14 Premier League goals this season, with only West Brom and Swansea having scored fewer, and Hughton admits the Seagulls may have to eclipse the club-record fee of £13.5m they paid for Jose Izquierdo in the summer to remedy their blues in front of goal.

“If we look at the value of players we saw a huge increase this summer”, the Brighton boss said. “I’m quite sure that the valuations won’t be going down in this period. Anybody that might move from one club to another, whether it’s from an English club to another English club or a foreign club to an English club, the values will be what they were in the summer if not more.”

Brighton have been linked with a move for Celtic’s Moussa Dembele, but Hughton refused to confirm if he was interested in trying to bring the player to the Amex Stadium.

“He’s a very good player and has had a very good season,” said the Brighton manager. “He’s just one of about a hundred names you could mention, but he’s not our player.”

Stoke City Manager Mark Hughes Doesn’t Believe He Will Be Sacked

Featured Image

Mark Hughes has rejected the suggestion that he is about to be sacked if his Stoke side lose to West Brom on Saturday.

Stoke have lost five of their last six Premier League games and sit just a point outside the relegation places going into the Christmas weekend, but the manager believes his side has the capabilities to get themselves out of trouble and says he is planning for the January transfer window in spite of the speculation about his future.

Hughes said: “I don’t think that is where we are at to be perfectly honest. The media will set time lines and time tables on it, but that is not what is happening within the corridors here in my view.

“We are not where we expected to be, that’s fair to say, and I think we all acknowledge that. But I would be more concerned if I felt the side didn’t have the capability of getting points on the board from this point on.”

‘A lot of comments come from people who are not even bothered to watch our games. It’s things they have heard and they have embellished things.

‘The longer it goes on, clearly the more difficult it gets, but I don’t sense any apprehension about where we are in terms of the players themselves.

‘I know this group better than anybody else and I know we have got the capability of picking up points. Before the West Ham game, like-for-like results we were ahead.

‘We are a good Premier League team and a great Premier League club, and have been for a long time, and that’s how we expect it to remain.’ Stoke are on a run of five defeats from six Premier League games to lie 17th in the table and one point above the relegation zone.

But Mark Hughes said Stoke’s local owners know the game and recognise the value of stability. ‘The owners have been in the game a long time and understand it’s not an easy role in terms of the managerial position,’ he said. ‘And they understand football is not a straight line.

Mauricio Pochettino Discusses His Plans For The January Transfer Window

Featured Image

Tottenham hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino has hinted that he will dip into the transfer market in January – with Ross Barkley’s name continuing to be linked with a move to north London.

Ross Barkley, who is on his way back from a hamstring injury, almost moved to Chelsea in the summer but opted against the switch at the last minute.

There have been suggestions that he favours a move to Tottenham and Pochettino is a long-term admirer of the England international, whose contract expires in the summer.

Chelsea are expected to return with another bid for Barkley in January and their interest could force Spurs into a rival offer – with Everton boss Sam Allardyce admitting the attacker could leave Goodison.

“If someone comes in during January and says: ‘Here you go’ [with an offer] and the club says: ‘Look, if he’s not going to sign for us this has to be the case,’ then I accept that,” said the Everton boss.

And speaking about his plans for the the transfer window, Pochettino admits that he could splash the cash if the right player comes onto the market.

Chelsea Ready To Make Thibaut Courtois Best Paid Goalkeeper In The World

Featured Image

Chelsea have tabled Thibaut Courtois an offer that will make him the highest-paid goalkeeper in world football, according to the Evening Standard.

Thibaut Courtois who has less than 18 months left to run on his current deal, had reportedly turned down Chelsea’s previous offer as it fell short of the £200,000 a week he had requested, but that figure has now been surpassed as the club look to tie their number one down to a long-term stay at Stamford Bridge.

There had been a suggestion that Atletico Madrid would make a move to bring Courtois back to the club where he won the La Liga title in 2014, with PSG potentially lining up a swoop to prise the Slovenia

Chelsea have made Courtois’ future their priority and have cooled interest in Stoke City shot-stopper Jack Butland.

Courtois has been a long-term target of Real Madrid but the Spaniards appear increasingly likely to sign Athletic Bilbao keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga in January

Crystal Palace And West Brom Showing Interest In Cameroon Striker Karl Toko Ekambi

Featured Image

Cameroon international Karl Toko Ekambi will be the subject of interest from both West Brom and Crystal Palace in the January transfer window, according to L’Equipe.

The striker has netted nine goals in 18 appearances in Ligue 1 for Angers this term and could be an attractive prospect for both sides going into the new year as they look to ease their relegation fears.

Karl Toko Ekambi, who previously played for Sochaux in the French top flight, has made 17 appearances for his country, scoring twice.

Toko Ekambi has already outstripped last season’s tally of seven and is enjoying the best season of his career, even if his team-mates are not performing to anywhere near the same level.

A tally and rangy striker who can also play on the left wing, the 25-year-old’s athleticism means he fits the bill for a West Brom or Palace side that seem well suited to playing on the counter attack.

Though Angers will surely do everything in their power to avoid their talisman’s departure. Their survival could depend on whether he stays or goes.

I Adviced Manchester United To Sign Gabriel Jesus And Kylian Mbappe- Ryan Giggs

Featured Image

Former Manchester United midfielder Ryan Giggs says he told the club to sign Kylian Mbappe and Gabriel Jesus years before they became breakout stars, according to an interview with the Times.

Giggs, who spent time as former United’s assistant manager alongside former boss Louis van Gaal between 2014-16, admits he clashed with the Dutch coach over the club’s transfer policy.

The Welshman said: “I watched Gabriel Jesus play three years ago. I watched Mbappe for a year. I was watching them with the scout and it was a no-brainer.

“It was just like ‘get them’. It would have been £5m or something – get them, loan them back – and that’s where the recruitment could have been better.”

United made a considerable move in the market with Van Gaal in charge, including the arrivals of Angel Di Maria, Memphis Depay, Anthony Martial, Morgan Schneiderlin and Radamel Falcao.

Despite the club’s spending, Giggs feels a number of arrivals did not possess the identity of a United player – a factor which led to just one piece of silverware in two years under the Dutchman.

“I know what a Manchester United player looks like,” added Giggs.

“There have been a lot who have come through that haven’t been United players and also players who were United players and shouldn’t have left.

“I’m talking about Rafael [Da Silva], Danny [Welbeck], and Jonny Evans – players who are United through and through.

“It was hard because Louis had his own ideas and you had to respect that, but, yes, we had a few arguments about a couple of them. He understood because I had played with those lads, but they just weren’t for him.

“Some of them, like Welbeck, wanted to play more regularly, and Jonny had a few injuries at the time, so you could understand it, but – and it’s not saying it in hindsight – recruitment hasn’t been great either.”

BREAKING: Workers Declare Strike Over Half Salary In Osun

Featured Image

Following the refusal of the Osun State Government to revert to paying their full salary and arrears despite the release of the receipt of the third tranche of N6.3 billion Paris Club loan refund, workers of the state have declared their intention to begin an indefinite strike.

The workers under the aegis of the Osun State Joint Public Service Negotiating Council (JPSNC) made the strike notice available in a statement issued on Friday following an emergency meeting of labour leaders on Thursday.

According to The Punch Newspaper, the notice of strike was signed by the Chairman JPSNC, Bayo Adejumo; Chairman, Nigeria Labour Congress, Tunde Adekomi and the Trade Union Congress Chairman, Bowale Adekola and leaders of various affiliate unions.

The notice read in part, “Consequent upon the refusal of the government of Osun State to accede to the demands of the workers and pensioners as contained in our letter of Tuesday, December 5, 2017, the workers of Osun State will be proceeding on an indefinite strike by 27th December , 2017.”

The workers were further urged to stay at home until they received another directive from the labour leaders concerning the strike.

On Tuesday, the labour leaders had disagreed with Governor Rauf Aregbesola over his insistence on paying November salary with the modulated scheme which makes workers from grade level 08 and above collect between 75 and 50 per cent of their salaries.

The workers had insisted that the state had the financial ability to pay them full salaries, saying  most of them  had been collecting half salaries since September 2015.

But the governor in a statement issued by his Commissioner for Information, Mr. Adelani Baderinwa, pleaded that they should exercise more patience till the state was able to revert to paying full salary.

Inter Milan Preparing To Offer Mauro Icardi New Contract

Featured Image

Inter Milan are preparing a new contract for Mauro Icardi in order to ward off interest in their captain from Real Madrid, reports AS.

Madrid have been linked with a big-money January move for Mauro Icardi, who has netted 17 league goals already this season, however Inter do not want to let him go and are preparing to go all out to ensure he stays put at the San Siro.

Inter president Erick Thohir is willing to offer the Argentina international a new deal worth €7m a season on a deal that would include a €130m buyout clause.

Icardi actually rejected Real Madrid as a kid to join Barcelona’s academy, but failed to make the grade and moved onto Sampdoria in 2011.

It was at the then Serie B side that he made his name.

After just one season in Italy’s top flight, he was snapped up by Inter where his career burst into life.

Inter currently stand third in the Serie A table, two points below league leaders Napoli as four heavyweights look close to challenge for the title this season. Defending champions Juventus and last season’s runners up, Roma are among the rest two sides battling for the supremacy in Italy.

Sambisa: Borno Shelves “Dec. 22” Holiday Over Workers’ Salaries

Featured Image

Borno State Government has shelved its plan to declare Friday, December 22, as a public holiday to mark its first ‘Sambisa Memorial Day’ – the capture of Sambisa Forest from the Boko Haram insurgents.

Earlier this year, it was announced that December 22 would be used to celebrate the success of Nigerian military and civilian volunteers in the fight against Boko Haram, in addition to remembering fallen heroes and victims of the crisis.

However, the state Commissioner for Home Affairs, Information and Culture, Mohammed Bulama, in a statement issued on Thursday in Maiduguri explained that the holiday was cancelled.

He said the holiday was shelved “on the grounds that since 22nd December of this year falls on a Friday which coincidentally dovetails into a four-day work-free period occasioned by the Christmas festivities, a declaration of the day as a public holiday will invariably deny Nigerian workers resident in Borno State, especially those who will observe and celebrate Christmas, the opportunity to withdraw their December salaries from the banks”.

Bulama further said that the holiday would be observed from 2018.

He continued: “The decision to reconsider the declaration of the public holiday this year is singularly dictated by the desire of the Borno State Government not to impose avoidable and unnecessary hardship on workers and considering the importance of workers’ salaries to the economy of the state, the general citizenry by extension.

“While the government sincerely regrets whatever inconvenience this decision might have caused members of the general public, it wishes to assure Bornolites that this public holiday will be strictly observed from next year, 2018 Insha Allah.”

The commissioner recalled that Governor Kashim Shettima had in March, 2017 declared December 22 every year as a public holiday.

He said: “The purpose of this declaration is not only to give us a special opportunity to remember the victims of the Boko Haram terrorism as well as the members of the Nigerian Armed Forces, members of other security agencies and volunteers who lost their lives in the fight against the insurgents, but also to celebrate the strength and the victory of our gallant Armed Forces.”

Man City goalkeeper Claudio Bravo has insisted he is happy at Manchester City, despite losing his place as the club’s number one to summer signing Ederson, report the Manchester Evening News.

The Chilean endured a torrid first season in the Etihad, receiving widespread criticism for a host of high-profile errors as City’s title challenge fell apart, but says he is content to play second fiddle to the Brazilian with his family settled and happy in England.

Claudio Bravo said: “I think life is not only about football, life involves a lot more, I have a family to consider, they are living in Manchester, we are thrilled that the kids are learning the language perfectly.

“These are things that we consider as a family, setting aside whether I’m playing or not. It’s all about being calm, to keep working, keep doing my job when I’m called upon, and being patient.”

Fernando Torres Wants Antoine Griezmann To Remain At Atletico Madrid

Fernando Torres has issued a plea for Antoine Griezmann to stay on at Atletico Madrid as speculation about his future intensifies, according to Marca.

Antoine Griezmann, who is the object of interest from Barcelona and Manchester United, is expected to leave Atleti next summer, when his buyout clause will drop to €100m.

Torres said: “Griezmann is with us and we have to enjoy him. Atletico can have and retain the best [players]. If I want him to stay? I would love it if Griezmann wanted to stay at Atletico. Does he want to stay? You have to ask him, but when he has decided to stay it will be because he wanted to.”

Griezmann’s current contract with Atletico runs up until June 2022 but the La Liga side will no doubt be bracing themselves for offers for the man who has seven goals in 19 games so far this season.

On his own future at the Wanda Metropolitano, Torres said: ‘I want to stay here forever, I have a half year on my contract, and it does not depend on me.’

Fernando Torres has contributed three goals and one assist in 18 appearances this term.
