As From January 1, Motorists Will Pay More At Lekki Toll Gate, Ikoyi Link Bridge – LCC

Featured Image

The Lekki Concession Company Limited (LCC) has announced that as from January 1, 2018, motorists using the toll gate at the Victoria Island end of the Lekki-Epe expressway and Lekki-Ikoyi link bridge would have to pay more money.

Presently, cars are charged N120, sport utility vehicles (SUVs) N150 and commercial buses N80 at the toll gate, while cars pay N250 and SUVs, N300 at the bridge.

Lagos Govt Orders LCC To Halt Proposed Toll-Gate Tariff Hike

However, while addressing a press conference in Lagos, LCC’s Managing Director, Mohammed Hassan, disclosed that the current charges were no longer sustainable as a result of the “current business realities and increasing cost of operation”.

He said: “Since the commencement of tolling in December 2011, the toll tariffs had remained the same despite the continuous increase in the cost of operations to ensure that the toll plazas and the road infrastructure are well maintained.”

“The toll review has also become necessary to enable the company meet its loan obligations to its local and foreign lenders, considering the fact that foreign exchange rates have continued to increase astronomically in the last couple of years.

“LCC cannot continue to operate or provide the services required from us if we do not review the toll tariffs”.

Speaking on the new toll review, Taofeek Oluwa, chairman, National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Eti-Osa local government, was quoted by TheCable as saying that members would support the arrangement provided the increase is not substantial.

“As long as LCC honours its agreement to peg commercial bus toll fare at N100 from the N80 we previously paid, we can confidently support LCC by assuring that our people will not suffer any increase in the fare paid to board commercial buses coming into or going out of the Lekki-Epe axis,” he said.

#FuelScarcity: DPR Shuts 52 Filling Stations As Fuel Price Hits N400 In Abuja

Featured Image

At least 52 filling stations have been shut down across Nigeria as the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) is getting tough with marketers found to be hoarding fuel as the current scarcity bites harder nationwide.

While The Nation reports that no fewer than 48 filling stations were shut down in Delta, Kwara and Ekiti states alone, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) says six petrol stations in Ogun state were sealed off by the DPR.

The DPR also made several arrests for fuel hoarding, under-dispensing, sabotage, obstruction of justice and installation of commercial gas cylinders without approval.

#FuelScarcity: Fayose Calls For Buhari’s Resignation As Nigerians Cry Out

In Ogun, it was learnt that all the affected petrol stations were found to have more than enough of the commodity but refused to sell it to the public.

Some buyers, who spoke with the NAN, accused the station owners of selling fuel at night above the pump price of N145.

“They only sell at night and they sell for N200 per litre,” one of the buyers in Ota, Ogun, who pleaded anonymity, said.

In Abuja, it was gathered that the price of petrol rose to N400 per litre on Friday as more citizens travelled out of their stations for the Christmas celebration.

Many motorists were said to have passed the night at filling stations in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in their desperation to buy fuel.

It was between N200 and N250 per litre in Lagos, Anambra, Ogun and Abia states.

Meanwhile, the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has declared that the scarcity is unacceptable, even as it charged President Muhammadu Buhari to rise up to the challenge.

“Nigerians must not be made to suffer, especially at this time of the year when we have the Yuletide and New Year festivities, which come with a lot of activities,” the party said in a statement in Abuja.

Iniesta: Madrid Can Still Do The Impossible

Featured Image

Barcelona captain, Andres Iniesta has warned the Catalans not to write off Real Madrid, after a 3-0 win at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Barcelona had to wait till the second half to bang in the goals, with Messi, Suarez and Vidal sealing all three points and going nine points clear.

The win also means Real Madrid are still fourth on the table, and are 14 points behind, but Iniesta is not writing them off.

“I do not think the distance in points shows the distance in quality between the two teams,” Iniesta told beIN SPORTS.

“We are very respectful of Madrid. We know they are one of the best clubs in the world, so we never rule them out for La Liga.

“There are still so many matches to play and Madrid, in their history have always proved they can pull off the impossible.”

“I want to congratulate the whole team on a great win,” he added.

“In the first half, Madrid had more chances than us. They were playing a more attacking style of football to us and were stronger than us.

“In the second half we turned the tables and were more comfortable

“In the first half they played us one-on-one but were not able to keep up that demanding style of play in the second half.”

El-Rufai Condemns ‘Christmas Carol Service’ Attack On Nindem Village That Left 4 Dead

Featured Image

The Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has condemned the attack on the Nindem village of Godogodo district in Jemaa Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

It was gathered that at least four persons were killed while many sustained injuries after a gunman invaded the venue of a Christmas carol service at Nindem village on Friday.

Confirming the incident in a statement, the spokesman for the Operation Safe Haven, Col. I.K. Ekpeyong, said the gunman invaded the village as the residents were holding a Christmas carol at the community square at about 9:00 p.m. and started shooting sporadically.

He said four persons were killed and eight others injured in the incident.

According to him, the bodies of the dead victims had been deposited in a mortuary while the wounded persons were taken to the Kafanchan general hospital for treatment.

He said: “Some people suspected to be masterminds of the attack have been arrested for further interrogation, while more troops have been deployed to the area to avert a fresh attack or reprisal.”

In his reaction to Friday’s attack, the state governor, in a statement issued by his spokesman, Samuel Aruwan, said the incident had eroded the “hard-won peace” in the area.

“Security forces have informed the Kaduna State government that there was an attack in Nimdem village on the night of Friday, 22nd December 2017. The government was further briefed, that arrests have been made and investigation is ongoing.”

“The government condemns this incident, and calls on all stakeholders to help uphold peace by working to avoid escalation and by supporting the security forces.

“Government commiserates with the families of the victims in this sad moment. The grief and pain these acts of violence leave in their wake can be devastating. It is important that all communities stand firm against any threat to peace, and reject those who might want to reprise the terrible events of December 2016.

“Government appeals for calm as security forces take action to restore peace and stability. Nobody should be allowed to truncate the right of citizens to live in peace and enjoy safety, or thwart their legitimate expectations of celebrating Christmas and the New Year in peace.”

We Found It Tough To Break Down Bournemouth- Pep Guardiola

Featured Image

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has claimed that they found it “tough” to break down Bournemouth en route to a 4-0 win this afternoon.

Bournemouth frustrated Manchester City until Asmir Begovic’s poor clearance in the 27th minute led to Fernandinho finding Sergio Aguero to head the hosts in front.

In the second half, the Citizens went on to claim another three goals through Raheem Sterling, Danilo and Aguero, making the scoreline more emphatic.

“It was so tough because they play five at the back and 10 players behind,” Guardiola told BBC Sport after the game.

“The space was almost impossible to find and we were lucky to score the first goal. The last 20 minutes they push up and after then we played a real good game. We were ready mentally. Again.

“In football always you can improve, individually or collectively, so it is not a target to be perfect – it does not exist in the world. Just now is a good Merry Christmas.”

Real Madrid Manager Zinedine Zidane Believes Nothing Needs Changing After El Clasico Defeat

Featured Image

Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane has stressed that Real Madrid “don’t need to change anything” despite falling to a 3-0 home defeat against Barcelona

Luis Suarez, Lionel Messi and Aleix Vidal all found the net in the second half of El Clasico at the Bernabeu to edge 14 points ahead of their bitter rivals in La Liga.

Zinedine Zidane , however, made it clear that the club was not “not going to go crazy”, even if the result was “very tough to take”.

“How we’re feeling after a 3-0 defeat? Bad,” Zidane told reporters after the game. “We started very well, the first half was even and it’s a defeat that hurts. It’s very tough for us to take, but it is what it is, it’s football.

“[Dani] Carvajal red? It happens from time to time. You think about making some changes but then you lose a player. It becomes a different game and it’s very difficult. Second half? We made a mistake, we defended badly, and at this level they’re differences between winning and losing.

“Still, we’re not going to go crazy. It’s a very difficult defeat to take, but we don’t need to change anything. We’ll never give up. Now we’ll go for our holidays and we won’t think about it. We’ll enjoy the time we have with our families and come back. It’s not over.”

We Deserved To Beat Everton- Antonio Conte

Featured Image

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte has described his side’s goalless draw at Everton as an “unfair result” and believes that they deserved to win the game.

Chelsea dominated proceedings at Goodison Park but could not break down a resilient Toffees back line, with goalkeeper Jordan Pickford and his defence putting in a dogged display.

“We had 26 shots, only eight on target,” the Italian told reporters. “I think we dominated the game and lots of chances to score. I think it is an unfair result. Everton deserve credit but we deserve to win.

“Maybe Jordan Pickford was the best player for them. We dominated the game and it is a pity to drop two points.

“It is normal to drop points with a poor performance but not today. It is not simple to dominate here, we needed a bit of luck.”

Isco Tells Spanish Media To Stop Spreading Sh*t After El Clasico Defeat

Featured Image

Isco has hit out at claims that he refused to warm up as a substitute during Real Madrid’s 3-0 humiliation at the hands of Barcelona.

Isco was left out of Real’s starting line-up for the clash at the Bernabeu and did not leave the bench as the La Liga champions were humbled in El Clasico.

Isco had been warming up with Marco Asensio and Gareth Bale after Barca took the lead early in the second half through Luis Suarez, but head coach Zinedine Zidane brought on Nacho Fernandez when Dani Carvajal was sent off for a deliberate handball and Lionel Messi gave Barca a two-goal lead from the penalty spot.

A report from Spanish outlet AS claimed that Isco stopped warming up and headed back to the bench after the decision to bring on Nacho, with Zidane later turning to Bale and Asensio in a bid to snatch a result before Aleix Vidal added a third goal for the visitors.

Isco, however, has taken exception to the suggestion, writing on Twitter after the match: “Stop spreading shit, my two teammates were about to come on… I didn’t know we could make four changes.”

Full Text Of President Buhari’s Christmas Message To Nigerians

Featured Image

President Muhammadu Buhari on Saturday felicitated with Nigerians, especially the Christians as they celebrate Christmas across the country, assuring that better days lie ahead of the nation despite its current challenges.

Buhari gave the assurance in a Christmas message he personally signed and was made available to journalists in Abuja.

Dear Compatriots,

I felicitate with all Nigerians, particularly our Christian brothers and sisters, on the occasion of this year’s Christmas day celebration.

The commemoration of the birth of Jesus Christ is an important opportunity for us to show love to one another and encourage unity by spending quality time with our friends, families and the less-privileged.

It is also an occasion to draw inspiration from the exemplary lifestyle and teachings of Jesus Christ, who constantly stood for what is right, true and honest.

The Holy Book describes Christmas as a festival of peace, joy, healing, hope and fulfilment. It kindles great expectations in the heart, irrespective of the challenges of the moment.

As we celebrate this Yuletide season, let us devote some time to pray and appreciate the sacrifices of members of our armed services to keep our nation safe and secure.

By the same token, and keeping with the spirit of the season, our gallant troops serving in the frontlines in the fight against insurgency; those wounded, lying in the hospital, as well as civilians who have suffered the brunt of evil and wicked elements these past years, deserve our fervent goodwill and sustained prayers.

The personal fortitude of these individuals will continue to inspire us to victory as we turn the tide against the enemy and annihilate those who work against the unity of our nation.

In this season of hope, let us remember to provide refuge to those who cannot enjoy Christmas at home with their families, or have been driven from their homes by insurgency or violence, particularly the Internally Displaced Persons.

Lately, we have witnessed an upsurge in the activities of trans-border syndicates who lure our youths to modern slavery through irregular migration. While we have stepped up our efforts to halt this wickedness against the upwardly mobile generation, and have evacuated some of our compatriots stranded abroad, we appeal to them to shun the allure of embarking on such perilous journeys.

I am deeply convinced that better days lie ahead for us as a nation as we make progress on all the major fronts where we have set our energies to surmount the challenges.

I wish you all Happy Christmas celebrations.

Muhammadu Buhari

Adekunle Gold Speaks On Relationship With Simi, Asking Adesua Out

Featured Image

Prominent Nigerian singer, Adekunle Gold, has opened up on once asking newly married Nollywood actress, Mrs. Adesua Wellington, to be his girlfriend.

During a chat with The Punch, the artiste also spoke about his relationship with fellow singer, Simi.

The singer had a few months ago tweeted that he had asked the then Adesua Etomi to be his girlfriend but the actress had told him she would only accept him if he was able to get 50,000 retweets. In the process of achieving the feat, Adesua announced her engagement to her sweetheart, Banky W.

However, while speaking with the news outlet recently, the singer claimed it was a joke and his tweets shouldn’t have been taken seriously.

He said, “People do not know if Adesua is just my friend. They wouldn’t know if my tweet was just banter or if it was real. I guess a lot of people thought it was real and I was asking Adesua out online. Why would I do that? We were just joking and she is my friend. I even tweeted when she got engaged that I’d not even got the 50, 000 retweets she asked for and she was already engaged. It was just banter but I guess people see what they want to see. Adesua and I never dated; we were/are just friends.

“If we had dated, I would have definitely worked towards marrying her. I mean, who would not want to marry Adesua? That is ‘if’ we had dated but that was never the case.”

On Simi, he said:

“I am also thinking of marriage because I am a family man. Already, I have a girlfriend but I would not tell you if she is in this industry. I don’t have to tell you if I am dating Simi or not. I cannot reveal my girlfriend’s identity because it could be that she does not want to be known. It could be that I want that aspect of my life to be a secret. People know and love me because of my music. I cannot be married for 10 years and people would not eventually find out. When the time is right, everyone would know who my love interest is. Let’s assume that I am dating Simi, what if it does not work out?  I’d love to keep that part of my life secret.”

Talking about his show, ‘One Night Stand with Adekunle Gold’, the singer hinted that girls would likely go haywire especially when he serenades them with his love songs.

“I tagged my show, One Night Stand with Adekunle Gold and the 79th Element.  I know that when a person hears ‘ one night stand’, the next thing that comes to mind is intimacy. The truth is that there would be so many girls at my show. I would be playing love songs that would put people in the mood and don’t be surprised when the ladies start removing their bras,” the singer said.

The 10 Biggest Songs Of The Year 2017

Featured Image

What makes a song a hit? Call and response hooks? Watery lyrics? Thunderous melodies? What then separates the mega hits from the regular ones? This list attempts to answer these two questions. The songs are arranged in ascending order.

  1. Come Closer- Wizkid ft. Drake

Songs

The third single from Wizkid’s mixtape, Sounds from the Other Side and second collaboration with Canadian superstar Drake was the first time Wizkid charted on the UK Singles Chart as a lead artiste. Apart from Nigeria where the single was a mega hit, Wizkid also charted in Canada, France, Netherlands and Scotland. Sarz is on the beat of this melodic fusion of afrobeat and Caribbean vibes.

  1. Living Things- 9ice

Songs

Nothing sells quite like controversy, and folk/pop singer 9ice took full advantage of some contentious lyrics from his crossover hit from late 2016 to dominate the conversation in the first half of the year, with celebrities and fans alike placing themselves firmly on various sides of the argument. For Living Things, Young John regurgitates a familiar beat and blends melodic elements of Fuji, Pop and Highlife. The result? One sick thrill.

  1. Maradona- Niniola

Songs

Niniola came into her own this year and Maradona, a groovy lamentation of a philandering partner set to beats lifted directly from South African house music. If she had been teasing all along, Maradona is Niniola announcing her readiness to play in the big leagues. While Yemi Alade has been hunting for another Johnny, Niniola pulls off something more interesting, using Alade’s tried and true formula, but giving it a side of spice.

  1. Yeba- Kiss Daniel

Songs

Kiss Daniel may be a cautionary tale these days, but this last gift to the fans as a full-fledged member of G-Worldwide was also one of his most rewarding efforts. Yeba builds to a slow burn, updating the seventies laid back tempo of Ebenezer Obey for a more restless audience. Yeba’s songwriting does not match up to the stellar production and instrumentation that Killertunes achieves on the record but Daniel’s smoky voice and precise delivery seals the deal every single time.

  1. All Over- Tiwa Savage

Songs

The lead single of pop queen Tiwa Savage’s surprise EP, Sugarcane is one of the most accessible pop hits of the year. Ms Savage layers her sultry vocals promising love and seduction atop a ridiculously generous beat provided by Mavins inhouse talent, Baby Fresh. All Over has one purpose only, besides serving as another glittering tone on Savage’s crown. It is an unmistakable call to the dance floor. The lyrics are on the watery side but this is pop music not rocket science.

  1. Iskaba- Wande Coal

Songs

For the past five years at least, Wande Coal, has been in perpetual comeback mode, each song and eventual album, bringing him just to the brink of that whitehot territory he occupied during his Mo’Hits heyday. Iskaba is the latest ready-but-not-quite effort to come out of Wande world. Iskaba is gibberish, but it is fascinating gibberish. The song nearly peaks at the very beginning when Wande screams, ‘’Oh my darling!’’ but the following three minutes sustain the excitement promised by those first three words.

  1. Mad Over You- Runtown

Songs

Mad Over You was released last year but its influence has loomed largest this year, both as a ready for play single, and as a precursor to countless imitators. Marrying Ghanaian highlife sounds with his afrobeats background, Mad Over You which peaked on the Billboard Twitter Top Tracks at number 38 is one of the songs that defined the year in music. It also sparked a mini battle for ownership of the Ghanaian sound between Runtown and Mr Eazi.

  1. Wo!- Olamide

Songs

After trying out some adult fare for his 2016 album, The Glory, Olamide, King of the streets and Mayor of the Mainland went back to his hood, Bariga to rediscover his hitmaking ways. The result was pure Olamide. Wo! Is that peerless ability to transform realities of mundane living into sing-along lyrics and an irresistible hook. Masterminded by the reliable Young John the Wicked producer, Wo! Is proof that Olamide is only as good- or as bad- as the fans want him to be.

  1. Penalty- Small Doctor

Songs

’If you no get money, hide your face’’ So began Penalty, the banging street anthem serviced to radio and to every club dj and street party by Small Doctor, the latest indigenous rapper to demolish language barriers on his way to mainstream ubiquity. Penalty is rough around the edges and depending on what side of the divide you are own, is representative of everything that is wrong with pop music but having tasted the dividends of dumbing down, it is hard to see Small Doctor going back.

  1. If- Davido/Fall- Davido/Mama- Mayorkun

Songs

The strain of starting over was present in some of the artistic success stories of 2017 and Davido was the poster boy. Having freed himself of a not entirely productive contract with Sony, Davido came back home, to the familiar embrace of serial hitmaker, Tekno and the result of this collaboration was a smash that was heard from Lagos to Durban. If with its drum kicks and leisure pacing, birthed follow ups like Fall and Mama from DWM signee, Mayorkun. They are all essentially the same song.

Featured Image

Kylian Mbappe has hailed Paris Saint-Germain teammates, Cavani as the best striker in the world and Neymar is close to being the best in the world.

Paris Saint-Germain have been impressive so far in the league, topping the table with nine points.

Mbappe, Cavani and Neymar have combined to score 38 goals out of 58 scored by PSG and the France youngster says he is learning from the pair.

“I am learning every day. I try to watch all the things they are doing in order to learn as quick as possible,” he said.

“When you have Cavani, who is for me the best striker in the world, and Neymar, who has everything to be the best player in the world very soon, you have a lot to learn.

“So it’s something I am watching closely and I am proud to play alongside them.”

Mbappe believes there is even more to come.

“I think we can do even better. It’s like five months we are playing together and we managed to do a lot of things. So imagine in one year, it could be even better,” he said.

“We know each other very well but we still need a couple of automatisms to know each other perfectly, with closed eyes as we say.

“But I think we would reach this very soon and we would do some great things very soon for PSG.”

Arsenal Need To Resolve Contract Situations Of Its Players – Patrick Vieira

Featured Image

Patrick Vieira says Arsenal must resolve the uncertainty surrounding a number of players’ futures at the club.

Mesut Ozil, Alexis Sanchez and Jack Wilshere are among the players whose contracts expire in the summer and Vieira says resolving the issue needs to be made a priority by the club.

Vieira, who is head coach at MLS side New York City, says contract situations are holding the club back.

“When you look at the Arsenal team in the last few years I think everybody expects more because of what this football club represents,” he said ahead of Arsenal’s match against Liverpool on Sky Sports. “The current years, of course, are not good enough; it’s not good for the club, for the fans.

When you win you want to keep winning and there are players who have to make a decision about what they want to do in the future – I think that is the first thing they need to resolve.

“And then, bring quality players to challenge Manchester City because I believe Manchester City will be the team to beat in the years to come. When you look at the way they play the game, you don’t have to especially be a City fan to enjoy it.”
