Klopp Asks Fans To Ignore £75 Million Van Dijk Price Tag

Featured Image

Jurgen Klopp has asked Liverpool fans not to pay attention to the £75 million fee for Virgil van Dijk, as he believes he  will justify the fee.

Liverpool paid a world record fee for the defender and he will link up with the squad come January.

There are concerns over the outrageous fee paid for Van Dijk, who is recovering from injury, but Klopp has faith in his abilities.

He told Sky Sports : “I can imagine that people will think ‘wow, what a number’, but for me it’s not really interesting. We don’t make the prices, the market makes the prices.

“The first thing that all Liverpool supporters should forget quite soon is the price. We only talk about the player and what he can bring in. The quality, the mentality, the character, all that stuff, and that’s why we’re really pleased with it.”

The German added: “It’s probably not been the best half season [for Van Dijk] at Southampton, he was a long time injured and we all know what happened last summer [Liverpool apologising after Southampton claimed they made an illegal approach for the player].

“He’s a tall player and they always need longer [to recover from injury] so he needs to get rhythm. But we have quality in that position so there’s no need to rush him.

“He needs to adapt to our style of play, it’s a different game but we are 100 per cent sure he will do it.”

Sevilla Appoint Vincenzo Montella As New Manager

Featured Image

Sevilla have appointed Vincenzo Montella as their new head coach.

Vincenzo Montella replaces Eduardo Berizzo who was sacked just a month after it was announced he was suffering from prostate cancer.

Montella was sacked by AC Milan in November after just 17 months in charge with the Italian giants marooned in mid-table.

“Sevilla and Italian coach Vincenzo Montella have reached an agreement in principle so that he will become coach of the Sevilla first team until June 2019,” the La Liga club announced on its website.

“The deal will be completed once Montella’s lawyers have reached an agreement with AC Milan for the terms of departure of the coach from the Rossoneri.

“Once his departure is finalised, Montella will travel to Seville on Friday night to sign his contract with the club. He will lead the team in training on Saturday morning before being formally presented.”

Sevilla’s next match is away to Cadiz in the Copa del Rey on 3 January, before a home La Liga fixture with city rivals Real Betis on 6 January.

They have won just once in their previous five games, trail league leaders Barcelona by 16 points and are two points behind Real Madrid in fourth.

Steven Caulker, 25, arrived at Loftus Road in 2014 but spent time on loan at Southampton and Liverpool in recent seasons.

The one-time England cap has not featured in QPR’s first team since September.

A statement on QPR’s official Twitter account said: “Steven Caulker has left #QPR by mutual consent with immediate effect. We wish him well for the future.”

Half Salary: Lecturers Declare Indefinite Strike In Osun State

Featured Image

Lecturers of the Osun State Polytechnics and the state’s Colleges of Education have declared their intention to embark on an indefinite strike to protest the payment of half salaries by Governor Rauf Aregbesola.

The strike notice is coming barely 24 hours after the start of an indefinite strike by the labour movement in the State.

The lecturers, operating under the aegis of the Council of Academic Staff Unions of Osun State Owned Tertiary Institutions, in a statement signed by its Chairman, Mr. Olusegun Lana and Secretary Sikiru Folorunso and made available to newsmen in Osogbo on Thursday, declared that the strike would start on January 15, 2018.

The lecturers said that apart from half salary which they had been receiving for the past 27 months, some other issues compelling them to go on strike are a very high tax; unfulfilled agreement on staffing of the schools; selective reinstatement of sacked workers and contributory pensions issues among others.

The affected institutions are the Osun State Polytechnic, Iree; the Osun State College of Technology, Esa Oke as well as the Colleges of Education in Ilesa and Ila Orangun.

They further disclosed that they had given the state governor a 21-day ultimatum on November 7 and more than a month after the expiration of the ultimatum, but still he is yet call them nor addressed the issues raised.

The statement read, “This is to inform all members of our great unions that consequent upon the concurrent resolutions of the respective Congresses of ASUP and COEASU across the four State-owned tertiary institutions, we have issued a notice of indefinite strike action with effect from 15th January 2018

“Government has not shown any seriousness towards addressing our painful plight as we have been subjected to untold hardship, frustrations and unprecedented levels of demoralization by the harsh effects of unaddressed festering issues including, but not limited to, perpetual half salaries (now up to 27 months) which our Unions were never in agreement to; unfulfilled collective agreements on staffing and proper composition of Governing Councils; selective justice in the reinstatement of disengaged members of staff.

“Others are: withdrawn statutory benefits, namely financial effects of 2014 promotions and migration of lower cadres; pay cut through arbitrary stoppage internally sourced portions of salary, namely peculiar earned academic, hazard and medical allowances; high tax; obnoxious rank redesignation and promotion criteria; stagnation in career progression through lack of promotion; and injuriously administered contributory pension scheme just to mention a few.

“We have shown a great sense of endurance and concern for our esteemed students in whose interest this notice of strike action is even made unnecessarily long with the hope that Government would do the needful without further delay. However, in the unexpected event that the issues remain unresolved till 15th January 2018 all members of academic staffs of the four State-owned tertiary institutions shall cease work to press home our demand for justice and fairness.”

FAAN Debunks Aircraft Burgling In Reaction To Wizkid, Tiwa Savage Robbery Claims

Featured Image

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has reacted with dismissal to the allegations of theft at the airport from two top Nigerian artistes, Wizkid and Tiwa Savage; saying the claims are baseless and impossible.

The reaction comes a few days after it was alleged that the private jet conveying the duo from Uyo, the capital of Akwa Ibom State, was allegedly attacked and robbed while taxiing on Lagos airport’s runway.

It was gathered that the Bombardier Challenger 605 jet with registration number T7-A00 arrived Lagos from Uyo at about 8:33 p.mm and was slowly taxiing to the arrival hangar when the cargo compartment was allegedly burgled.

#AFRIMA2017: Wizkid, Tiwa Savage Emerge Best In West Africa

Wizkid and Tiwa Savage

Reports have it that upon arrival at Quits Aviation Center, a private jet hangar, the pilot discovered that two bags belonging to Ms. Savage and Wizkid had allegedly been stolen.

While Wizkid has kept mum about the incident, Tiwa took to social media to vent her frustration.

However, the airport authorities, in its release, stated that it is not possible for anyone to burgle an aircraft in motion.

Henrietta Yakubu, FAAN spokesperson, said because aircraft are highly technical machines, it is practically impossible for anyone who does not have the requisite training and competence to operate or tamper with the baggage compartment.

She said preliminary findings from investigations conducted by an inter-agency committee set up to probe the allegations could not substantiate the claims.

Her words: “The purported victims in the said cases also did not make themselves available for questioning, in the quest to unravel the case.

“Although investigations are still on going, FAAN will like to reassure travellers and the general public that with the level of safety and security systems on ground at the airports, it is practically impossible for an aircraft to be burgled within our Runways and Aprons.”

Atletico Madrid CEO Reveals Antoine Griezmann’s Future Is Out Of Their Control

Featured Image

Atletico Madrid CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin has revealed that the future of striker Antoine Griezmann is out of their control.

Antoine Griezmann was the verge of leaving the club last summer before performing a U-turn once Atletico were hit with a transfer ban.

Barcelona are now considered to be the frontrunners for the 26-year-old’s signature next summer, and Marin admitted that the club are powerless to prevent Griezmann leaving should his release clause be met.

“Antoine’s future does not depend on us. I cannot stand here and comment for certain on what will happen as it is out of our control, but last summer we made every effort to ensure he remained at Atletico,” he told reporters.

“This summer, we will try to do the same again as it took us a lot of effort to get these two players (Griezmann and Diego Costa) to be together at the same club.

“We don’t want to sell him, whether that is now or in the summer, he is a very important player for us but I repeat, it is not in our hands.”

Antoine Griezmann’s release clause will revert to €100m (£88.9m) next summer after temporarily rising to €200m (£177.8m).

Sako Happy With Crystal Palace Striking Role

Featured Image

Bakary Sako is happy with his new striking role at Crystal Palace, afforded to him by Roy Hodgson.

The former Wolverhampton winger has scored two goals since Hodgson moved him from the flanks.

And Sako is quite happy with his new role at the club and is happy to work with the experienced manager.

“I was not used to playing as a striker but under Roy Hodgson, I have learned a lot and have been delighted to have the chance to play there,” Sako told club website.

“I am getting used to what is expected in that role, he has spoken to me about the importance of the movement, what is expected of me in different areas and I am learning all the time and obviously it has been good to have scored a couple of goals whilst playing there.

“The manager has got loads of experience and that is why it is so good to pick all that up from him when he puts across his instructions to you and he has helped me so much since he has come in.

“He is a manager who is really focussed on what he wants so on the training pitch as a squad we keep working on different methods until we get it right and that must continue for us to succeed.”

“I have been injured for a while since I have been here but obviously now I am back I am enjoying the game time and with the trust the manager is showing in me that is great,” he added.

“I am getting back to fitness as well as having some more minutes on the pitch and this means I get confidence and let’s hope that continues.”

West Ham Manager David Moyes Discusses Plans For January Transfer Window

Featured Image

West Ham boss David Moyes says he will be buying players in the January transfer window to strengthen his squad.

Moyes is looking to strengthen his squad by adding a central midfielder, and is also in the market for right-sided players as West Ham look to pull clear of the relegation places.

Speaking to the club’s website, he said: “I’ve given players opportunities. I’m in a hurry and I have to be in a hurry and because of that I cannot wait three or four months to see how you do.

“Ideally, I’d have had six or seven pre-season games to understand what they’re like and what they do, but I’ve not.

“I’ve got to say every player has shown great desire and is committed in training, but I think we’re short in some areas and overloaded in others. For example, we’ve got lots of forwards, but we’re really short of midfield players.”

West Ham have lost once in the last five league games, beating champions Chelsea 1-0 and holding Arsenal to a goalless draw in that run. The London side drew 3-3 with Bournemouth in their last outing on Tuesday.

Bike Accident: Presidency Denies Flying Yusuf Buhari To Germany For Treatment

Featured Image

The Presidency has described as ‘fake’ a news making the rounds online that the President’s son, Yusuf Buhari, was flown out of the country in the early hours of Thursday morning following his severe head injury in a bike accident.

An online media outfit, TheCable, on Thursday reported that Buhari junior had been flown to Germany over the head injury he sustained following a bike accident on Tuesday night.

The news outlet had earlier countered a statement issued on Wednesday by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, in which he had said Yusuf “is in a stable condition.”

Shehu had said: “Yusuf Buhari had a bike accident last night around Gwarimpa in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

“He broke a limb and had an injury to the head as a result. He has undergone surgery at a clinic in Abuja. He is in a stable condition.

“The President and his wife, Aisha Muhammadu Buhari, are thankful to Nigerians for the good wishes and prayers for their son. May God reward you all.”

Disputing this, the online newspaper, quoted a source as saying that the statement was not very accurate.

“The statement did not reflect the true situation of things. The boy is in a critical condition. He has been in the intensive care unit,” the source said.

“Some doctors in the hospital were even scared to attend to him just in case anything went wrong. Imagine doctors being scared to perform their duty. He is the only son of the president.”

The source added that the president’s family were making plans to get an air ambulance that would convey Yusuf to a German hospital which Cedacrest has an affiliation with.

However, NAN reports that Malam Shehu, in a text message on Thursday in Abuja, said Buhari was still being treated at a private hospital in Abuja.

Not every project that dropped this year was publicly considered great. Here we list my pick for the top 5 most disappointing albums of the year.

  1. Black Magic- Yemi Alade

albums

Yemi Alade must own the title of the most frustrating pop singer out there and Black Magic, her third studio album released in the twilight of 2017 is proof. She has inspired countless think pieces and ‘’haters’’ because her music is still stuck in 2014 Johnny mode but Alade has simply refused to grow as an artiste. She sticks to her Mama Africa image and badgers her audience to stuporous depths with titles like Knack Am, Bum bum and Talku Talku. Shame what happens to a talent left to embrace redundancy.

  1. King Don Come- D’Banj

albums

With King Don Come, D’Banj tried (yet again) to command the attention of the home fans he once took for granted, and (once again,) does not quite succeed. At this point, what is left of D’Banj’s pop career has almost become sad to watch and hints of a certain kind of desperation. He still fancies himself durable property overseas and accommodates American Trap music sounds and South African rhythms. King Don Come is too much, yet too little.

  1. Beloved- Korede Bello

albums

Adult audiences may find themselves unmoved by the childishness of the entire affair. When Bello wants to stray and branch out into more adult sounding fare, as he does on Do Like That, he does it so innocently that it is almost negligible. Production work is handled naturally by the trio of Don Jazzy, Baby Fresh and Altims. None of them is particularly inspired and can you blame them, a chapter of classic Russian literature is more exciting than the Korede Bello brand as currently marketed.

  1. Lagos Na Wa (Wobe Sound)- Olamide

albums

By now complaints about Olamide’s records are so routine- every end of the year- they are almost cliché. But they exist for a reason and Lagos Na Wa, Olamide’s seventh solo studio effort is proof. Powered by lead single Wo, which was somewhat of a return to chart topping form for the rapper, the disc had Olamide attempting to legitimize his new sound, a watery concoction that fails to be arresting enough to invite further contemplation.

  1. Believe- Sugarboy

albums

Sugarboy toes the label’s line of excluding external artistes from interfering with his sound. While this was a winning move for Kiss Daniel who came correct with the hits and with the easily marketable pop appeal, Sugarboy has proven a tougher nut to crack. Kiss Daniel returns the favor- Sugarboy was the sole guest on New Era– and while he gamely brightens up inferior material like Kilamity and Ekene, there is only so much that he can genuinely do.

Do you agree?

Marouane Fellaini Claims He’s Continously Being Vilified In England

Featured Image

Marouane Fellaini feels he has been unfairly treated during his time in English football and has become something of a marked man.

Despite his reputation as a physically-imposing midfielder, Fellaini has been sent off just three times during his time in England, although he was forced to serve a three-match ban for elbowing Robert Huth in 2016 after the Leicester defender pulled his hair.

His last red card came in the Manchester derby in April after referee Martin Atkinson penalised the Belgian midfielder for a headbutt on Sergio Aguero

In a wide-ranging interview with Belgian magazine Humo, Fellaini said he often feels like it is one rule for him and a different rule for other players.

“They have labelled me an aggressive player, a murderer,” the Manchester United midfielder said. “Look, I’m fanatical. The team that wants it the hardest wins but there have been times when I came out as the villain. What should I do if they pull me by the hair? It sounds like a joke, but it really hurts.

“Last season I was suspended after the derby against City for a headbutt against Aguero. He stepped towards me and then dropped dead. But, no, I get the red.
“Players often try to provoke me but do you know how many yellow cards I collected last season? Four, in 45 matches. I’ve never destroyed someone’s career
