Workers Suspend 3-Day Old Strike In Osun

Featured Image

Workers under the aegis of the Joint Labour Unions in Osun have called off their three-day-old strike embarked upon on Wednesday after meeting with the State Government officials.

On Saturday, the labour unions, led by the state Chairman of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Mr Jacob Adekomi, agreed to call off the strike after the state government acceded to some of their demands and a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed.

Half Salary: Lecturers Declare Indefinite Strike In Osun State

Speaking with reporters after signing the MoU, Adekomi said the state government has agreed to pay workers full salary for the month of December from the N6.3 billion Paris Club Refund received from the federal government.

He also said Gov. Rauf Aregbesola has approved the release of N1 billion to cover bond certificate of civil servants that retired on contributory pension scheme, while pensioners would now be paid full pension henceforth.

The NLC state chairman also said that the government has equally lifted embargo on promotion, confirmation of appointments, advancement and inter-cadre conversions and yearly increment with immediate effect.

Adekomi however said the payment of full salaries and pension would commence by the second quarter of 2018.

He said that modalities for subsequent payment of salaries and pensions between January 2018 and second quarter of the year would be addressed by the standing committee on apportionment, payment of salaries and critical expenses.

While appreciating the governor for acceding to all their demands, the chairman promised that civil servants in the state would continue to discharge their duties effectively.

Adekomi therefore called on workers to resume work after the New Year celebration.

PDP Reacts To Buhari’s Controversial Board Appointments Which Include “Dead People”

Featured Image

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has described as an unpardonable national embarrassment, the appointment of deceased persons as members of various federal boards by the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration.

The Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) had announced the appointment of 209 board chairpersons and 1,258 board members.

It is understood that names of at least three deceased persons were included, others duplicated and a few non-members of the ruling APC included in the said appointments.

Buhari Appoints 209 Chairmen, 1,258 Board Members For Govt Agencies (See Full List)

While the presidency has since admitted to the anomalies in the list, adding that these will be corrected, the opposition party has lamented that the situation has further exposed why the nation’s economy has been in shambles under the APC.

In a statement issued on Saturday by PDP National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, the opposition party said the development confirmed PDP’s position that the APC administration is completely confused, disorganised and grossly incompetent.

The statement reads in part:

“The development has further confirmed PDP’s position that the APC administration is completely confused, disorganised and grossly incompetent. Nigerians can now see why the nation’s economy has been in shambles in the last two years. When we say that this government is completely inept, some Nigerians did not know to which level, but now they do.

“This inability to tidy up a simple issue of list of 209 appointees has completely exposed the extent the APC government is bereft of simple organisational skills to manage a country like Nigeria, which is in dire need of development.

“How on earth can a government that cannot compile a common list handle intricate issues of national planning and budgeting; issues of health, education, aviation, agriculture, infrastructure and management of the huge civil service?

“How can they possibly initiate and successfully implement national and international instruments for national development in today’s competetive world? This also explains why nothing has been working under the APC government. Furthermore, the mix up in the list also exposes the corruption in the APC government.”

“The fact is that the government of our dear country has been in wrong hands in the last two years and the situation will continue to worsen unless the nation is rescued from them in 2019.”

Drinkwater: Chelsea Still Hoping To Catch City

Featured Image

Chelsea midfielder, Danny Drinkwater insists that the blues have not given up hope of catching Manchester City.

Roman Army raced to a 3-0 win in the first half against Stoke City, with Rudiger, Pedro and Drinkwater getting the goals.

Resumption from break saw Willian and Zappacosta score two more goals, as Chelsea won 5-0 emphatically at home to climb up to second and within 13 points of City.

“We’re doing well. The more wins we pick up in a row, the better it is for us,” he told BBC’s Match of the Day.

“We managed the game well. We got off to a good start. We can take confidence from this into the Arsenal game – but it’s a totally different game.

“It [the title race] is not over until it’s over. So we have to keep on winning.”

Report: Gremio Tell Barcelona To Pay €30m For Arthur

Featured Image

Gremio want €30m for Barcelona target Arthur, reports Globoesporte.

Barca are keen on Arthur, who was photographed wearing their home shirt earlier this month.

According to Globoesporte, Gremio are seeking a €30m transfer fee for the youngster. The player’s registration rights are split – Gremio have 60%, while the remaining 40% is split between an external company and the player’s family.

Barca, meanwhile, are unwilling to pay more than €25m to land the playmaker.

It’s no surprise that Gremio want as much as they can get for Arthur, and it’s unclear if there is interest from other clubs, or if they are simply trying to drive up the price.

However, if Barca really do want to bring him in, it seems they may have to spend more than they thought.

Yannick Carrasco has had a mixed start to the season and has been linked with a move away from the Wanda Metropolitano, with Bayern Munich and several Premier League clubs touted as potential suitors.

However, Miguel Angel Gil Marin, Atleti’s CEO, says the Belgium international will be staying put.

Speaking on Spanish radio show El Transistor, he said: “The idea with [Yannick] Carrasco is that he stays and becomes one of our main winter reinforcements.

“People speak from ignorance because it is easy to do it, but he has had knee problems and that’s why he has not had a good first half [of the season].”

Klopp: There Is Interest In Liverpool Stars

Featured Image

Liverpool manager, Jurgen Klopp has admitted there is interest in the club’s stars.

The Reds have already moved to bolster their squad, acquiring Virgil van Dijk for a fee of £75 million ahead of the second half of the season.

Liverpool expect to lose players in January, but Klopp will like to maintain the balance.

On what the window could hold for Liverpool, Klopp told reporters: “The first thing we have to make sure is that we have the squad we need for the second part of the season.

“We had a good situation so far in the squad and that’s what we need to have again for the second half of the season.

“Usually you make an agreement for a year. I know players have longer contracts and stuff like that but that’s how it is [then] everything can happen in the big transfer window in the summer.

“Usually, the player has the time – one year’s time – to train and play that good [to show] that it makes sense that he stays here.

“For a few young players it is quite different to be honest and we will have to see what we do there.

“With all the rest, we will see. The club’s interest is first, 100 per cent, so we need to make sure that we have enough players for different situations.

“The perfect situation is [that] for both sides it is really good, or nearly perfect – for the player and the club.

“If not, then the club needs to come first, that’s how it is. But we will see what happens, there is nothing decided so far, there are a few [clubs interested] in players.

“But if we agree or not? No decisions so far.”

Who Presidential Documentary ‘Epp?’ – Niran Adedokun

CLICK here to read more opinion articles

On Christmas Day, I stumbled on an interview given by the Special Adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina. Although it was a fairly lengthy interaction with the presenters of Sunrise Daily on Channels Television that morning, two things that the presidential spokesperson said amplify the fault with the President’s communication.

This piece was written by Niran Adedokun. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of

Confronted with a front page report quoting the National Bureau of Statistics as estimating that eight million Nigerians had become unemployed between January 2016 and September 30, 2017, Adesina suggested that Nigerians should be grateful that the administration allowed the NBS do its job.

He indicated that being an agency of government, it was possible for the President to have breathed down on the NBS and stopped it from presenting those damning statistics. In effect, we must be grateful to the President for allowing the NBS such independence!

I agree that Adesina is always entitled to his opinion but such a proposition attempted to take official subservience to a new level. The truth is that at no time in Nigeria’s recallable history has the NBS been subjected to government manipulation to warrant the credit that Adesina solicited for the government that he speaks for.

When he eventually got to address the question of the current wave of job loss, he clarified that not all the total number of 15.9 million loss occurred during the Buhari administration. He explained further that the administration had indeed created a number of employment opportunities from some of its initiatives. Asked to give an idea of the number of such employments, Adesina did not have the figures!  It was then he realised and actually did promise to collaborate with the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, to compile these figures!

That set an alarm ringing in my head.  I felt this was some unpardonable dereliction of duty more so as a few hours down the line, Adesina’s office was set to release a documentary on what it called the ‘human side’ of the President.

Before this Monday morning, the presidential spokesperson had engaged in his usual verbal fireworks with critics of his decision to screen this documentary which was supposed to reveal the humane Buhari that Nigerians did not know. Critics thought that the choice of a period in which Nigerians were under the heavy yoke of lack and deprivation signified by the failure of the state to provide the most basic need of the people (fuel), was insensitive.

Arguments ranged from the fact that hundreds of thousands of Nigerians who usually travelled to be with their loved ones at the period were denied that opportunity this year, that hundreds of people slept in queues at petrol stations, millions of Nigerian workers were unable to access their monthly salaries at this period and that a series ethnic conflagrations had further worsened the fragile security situation in the country required.

In his reaction, Adesina expressed appreciation for comments which were “borne out of genuine concern” but gave fire back to those whose comments he classified as virulent. He described those as “inveterate complainers”, whose stock-in trade had become fault-finding, and who “if they mistakenly find themselves in Heaven, they would even complain against God.” Wow!

Apart from the cheekiness of the suggestion that those alleged unrepentant Buhari bashers might not be natural candidates for Heaven, coming from a Pastor, whose commission is to recruit people into the same paradise, I say once again that it is unethical for Adesina to talk down on Nigerians, whose taxes sustain him and his boss in office.

For the avoidance of any doubt, spokespersons for public office holders must understand and respect the citizenship right of Nigerians to freely express. They indeed, must come to terms with the fact that the right of the average Nigerian, no matter their motive to comment on the activities of the government in power is critical to the survival of democracy in the country. And any attempt to bully the people from so freely expressing themselves is a disservice to the office that Adesina holds.

But more than that, after seeing the documentary, I think there are two reasons the President’s spokespersons will need to reconsider their strategy.

First off, this documentary is not just about the President’s soft or humorous side as the predominant narrative, which was literarily validated by Adesina. The part highlighting Buhari’s capacity for humour is in fact one of the segments of the documentary which include his close allies’ opinions about his democratic credentials as well as what each of them thinks Nigerians should know about the President.

Vice President Yemi Osibanjo spoke about the President having come 360 degrees from his military past and his ability to delegate and trust people to deliver on tasks. Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State spoke about Buhari’s capacity for fairness, concern for the ordinary man and capacity to aggregate opinions and accommodate divergent views, just as Governor Nasir el-Rufai, Minister of Power, Babatunde Fashola, and others spoke about his vision for Nigeria, his discipline, patriotism, managerial ability and what have you. Adesina himself spoke about his principal’s outstanding capacity to pay attention to details while Shehu Garba spoke about his self-discipline. The President’s daughter, Halima, also spoke about her father’s frugality and the fact that he had made it clear to his children from very early that the only legacy he would bequeath to them would be good education!

You therefore wonder how the import of the documentary became minimised to addressing the President’s ability to crack memorable jokes.

Even then however, I opine that neither the “human side” of the President nor the assorted leadership capacities ventilated by those who work closely with him, is auspicious at this time when Nigerians are becoming disillusioned from incessant social upheavals and diminishing capacity to live with their dignity intact.

For instance, millions of Nigerians who elected Buhari on March 28, 2015 wanted more than this so-called human side. In fact, the persona that endeared him to the people was that of a stern, no- nonsense, cult-like figure poised to save the country from the debilitating effects of compromises that had gripped the soul of the nation.

Buhari was sold to Nigerians by his party and friends as a visioner who saw the need to expand the base of the Nigerian economy and was willing and capable of doing it. We were told of his exploits as a military general and how he would bring his experience to bear on the frightening level of insecurity in the country. We were told that Buhari would lead us into an era in which the Nigerian child would attend school without hassles and hope for a bright future, in which unemployment would gradually become a thing of the past; where access to quality and affordable health would be the order of day and in which Nigerians would be happy and have a sense of belonging anywhere they are.

In effect, it does not seem that Nigerians desired anything other than the impeccable character, unstained integrity, disposition to serve the people and defend the downtrodden from the unbridled selfish political and financial elites who conspire to rob society of its commonwealth, which Buhari has created since he came into public consciousness with his appointment as Military Governor of North Eastern State in 1975.

As a result, this documentary would have been a better cut had Adesina and his office, through it, provided us with the number of employment opportunities already created by the administration through its agricultural and Small and Medium Scale Enterprises interventions-,  facts that Adesina is just planning to collate at this time.

It would have served the interest of government and citizens better to have a better understanding of how the administration has enhanced the opportunities of Nigerian fathers to bequeath good education to their children like Buhari did Halima and her siblings; what has been done to improve the quality of and access to health care delivery;  initiatives geared towards expanding the nation’s economy and banishing poverty, hunger and lack as well as  how much Nigerians are inspired to love themselves and their country more in the past 21 months.

To my mind, failing to communicate the effectiveness of the administration for the reductionism that was aired this week is puerile and unhelpful. It only furthers the compliant ideologue and poor advisory that define governance in Nigeria and gives no hope that today is better than yesterday.

Cavani Denies Rift With Neymar

Edinson Cavani insists he has no problems with Neymar, and has no desire to leave PSG, as he is intent on winning the UCL.

The Uruguay international has impressed since joining the Ligue 1 club in 2013, and is one goal shy of equalling Ibrahimovic’s record for the club.

PSG are so intent on winning the Champions League that has eluded them and hope to do so, after acquiring Neymar for a record fee.

Cavani’s relationship with the Brazilian  has made the headlines, but the talented forward insists they have a good relationship.

“We have a great relationship,” Cavani said in an interview with The Telegraph.

“We are very professional and our goal is teamwork and the club. Everyone was really happy when he [Neymar] signed because he’s such a great player and so it was a good thing for the club, for the team. It was incredibly exciting for all of us.

“The problem is that many people are not given the correct information and there is a lot of misunderstanding.”

How Barcelona Failed To Sign Atletico Madrid’s Saul Niguez Last Summer

Featured Image

Atletico Madrid CEO Miguel Angel Gil Martin has revealed that Barcelona were left red-faced in the summer when failing in their attempt to sign midfielder Saul Niguez.

Barcelona had hoped to land Saul Niguez during the most recent transfer window, taking advantage of an €80m (£71m) buyout clause inserted in his contract.

Barca were unaware that Saul had already put pen to paper on fresh terms at the Wanda Metropolitano, though, seeing the figure required to trigger his release clause nearly double as a result of the long-term commitment.

“[Barcelona president Josep Maria] Bartomeu called me to say he was looking for a player with Saul’s qualities and that he intended to pay his buyout clause,” he told Onda Cero.

“What Bartomeu didn’t know is that, three days before, we’d signed a new contract with Saul and his clause had increased from €80m to €150m.”

Chelsea Reveal Financial Losses For Season Spent Out Of Champions League

Featured Image

Chelsea recorded a £15.3m profit for the year ending June 30, 2017, after player sales helped cover an operating loss.

The club generated a profit of £69.2m from transfer business, due largely to the sale of Oscar to Shanghai SIPG for around £60m.

Chelsea said the results ensure the club continues to comply with UEFA’s break-even criteria under the Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations.

Turnover grew to £361.3m from £329.1m in the previous year, an increase of 9.8 per cent, which stems from increased broadcast revenue and winning the Premier League title.

However, the club also missed out on potential revenue by failing to qualify for the 2016-17 Champions League campaign.

“It is very pleasing we matched significant achievement on the pitch in 2016-17 with a successful year commercially,” said chairman Bruce Buck.

“Our business has continued to grow long term and to be able to post record turnover figures despite not playing Champions League football during that period highlights this strength.”

Chelsea have also benefited from partnership deals such as Thai energy drink, Carabao.

“It is very pleasing we matched significant achievement on the pitch in 2016-17 with a successful year commercially,” said chairman Bruce Buck.

“Our business has continued to grow long term and to be able to post record turnover figures despite not playing Champions League football during that period highlights this strength.”

“Our fans played a major part, by supporting the team towards lifting the Premier League trophy, coming to our matches in large numbers, and our ever-increasing global fanbase has helped important commercial partnerships to be formed. Abdoulaye Doucoure Not Leaving Watford- Marco Silva

Featured Image

Watford boss Marco Silva insists none of his squad will be leaving Vicarage Road during the January transfer window.

Abdoulaye Doucoure has been linked with a potential move away from the club after impressing this season but Silva expects the France midfielder to remain with the Hornets beyond the window.

“Abdoulaye Doucoure has a long contract with us. If we want to change something with his contract, if the player is doing very well, it is up to us,” said Silva.

“This possibility of him leaving the club, nobody has talked with me about this situation. Our board has already made its statement – nobody will leave the club in the January market.

“What we need to do is to improve our squad and not to allow people to leave.”

Alvaro Morata Makes Shock Tottenham Transfer Claim About Harry Kane

Featured Image

Alvaro Morata has dismissed Mauricio Pochettino’s claims he rejected a move to Spurs two years ago because he did not want to play second fiddle to Harry Kane.

After Alvaro Morata joined Chelsea from Real Madrid for £70m in July, Pochettino revealed he had a conversation with the striker about joining Spurs “two years ago or more”.

However, in an exclusive interview with Sky Sports, Morata said that Kane’s presence in the Spurs team played no factor in a move which failed to materialise.

“No it’s not true,” Morata said. “I spoke with him and he said he wanted both [of us] to play together, but there was no chance to come to Tottenham.

“For sure I would like to play with Kane, he’s a big player, one of the best strikers in the world, but in this moment when I spoke with him (Pochettino) there was no chance to leave Real Madrid.”

Morata arrived at Chelsea as Diego Costa’s replacement and he insists there is no bad blood between the two Spanish counterparts.

“He is a very good player and a good man too. I’m Diego’s friend and when I came here I knew that is was a big responsibility to replace him, but I’ve tried to do well,” Morata said.

“Always when we are together in the Spanish team, we talk about football and life. We talk about everything and I always say thanks to Diego.”
