Valverde Not Opening Up On Coutinho Transfer

Featured Image

Barcelona gaffer, Ernesto Valverde insists he has no idea if the club is looking to sign Coutinho this January window.

Reports have it that the Reds have changed their stance on selling the forward, and Barcelona are yet to table a deal.

Valverde thinks Coutinho is “a great player” but insists he does not want to talk openly about anyone outside his own squad.

“Sometimes I come in here and I learn about things that are happening; whether they’re true or not, I don’t know,” he told a news conference ahead of Barca’s Copa del Rey clash with Celta Vigo.

“Coutinho plays for another team and he is a great player for that team. If he plays for Barca in the future or not, I don’t know.

“I like the players I have in my team and if another one comes in the future, I’m sure he has to be a very good player, too.”

Asked about Coutinho being ineligible to play in the Champions League this season if he joins Barca this month, Valverde replied: “I’ve got nothing to say about Coutinho. We respect the fact he plays for another club.”

Sevilla Make Bid For Everton’s Striker Sandro

Featured Image

Sevilla coach Vincenzo Montella has tabled an offer for Sandro, according to Radio MARCA.

Despite scoring 14 goals in 30 appearances for Malaga last term, Sandro has yet to score for Everton and hasn’t featured under Sam Allardyce.

He likes to play either alongside another striker or out wide as part of a front three and would certainly add to Sevilla’s current tally of just 20 goals from 17 games.

Valencia, and Villarreal are also interested, though it appears as though a loan for now is the most likely course of action.

“We Can No Longer Import, Sell Petrol At N145/Litre”- Marketers

Featured Image

Petrol marketers in the country have informed the Nigerian government that they can no longer sell petrol at N145 per litre.

They also said they were not responsible for the recent scarcity of the product witnessed across the country.

The marketers under the aegies of Depot and Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (DAPMAN) made their decision known to the government at a meeting with top officials at the presidential villa on Tuesday in Abuja.

The Chairman of Depot and Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, Dapo Abiodun, disclosed these to State House correspondents at the end of a meeting stakeholders in the oil industry had with Federal Government’s delegation led by the Chief of Staff to the President, Abba Kyari.

The marketers insisted that selling petrol at N145 a litre was no longer profitable as the price of crude oil in the international market has risen and this has a corresponding relation with the price of refined products.

Abiodun said: “Today’s meeting was called at the instance of the Chief of Staff to the President and it was to find out exactly what happened, where we had the problems we had in December with the supply of petrol and how Nigerians were made to go through the pains and suffering.

“He wanted to know the truth and to ensure that going forward this problem will be solved once and for all. And that is why you saw that we sat in here from 2pm and the meeting just finished after three and half hours.

“A lot of issues were raised and a committee was constituted that will meet tomorrow under the chairmanship of the minister of petroleum to further go into the nitty-gritty and to ensure that these problems do not reoccur again.

“From our point of view as marketers, we made our submission known to government and we emphasised the fact that this was not a marketer-related problem. There was no hoarding on the part of any marketer. Marketers are your brothers, they are Nigerian citizens, they are businessmen, no marketer makes money from hoarding petroleum products, our business is to take petrol and sell.”

“We explained that the problem that you saw is not willful on the part of anyone either NNPC or marketers.

“The situation, from our point of view, is that from January to December, the price of crude remained relatively stable. Following the Hurricane Katrina in the month of September, October, crude prices went up and marketers lost the ability to import any sell at N145 per litre.

“Since the price of crude is directly proportional to the refined product, we could not import petrol and sell at N145 anymore. And this business is a partnership between marketers and NNPC. Marketers bring in a certain volume and NNPC also brings in a certain volume.

“In the past marketers bring in about 60% while NNPC brings about 35 to 40 percent. But by the month of October marketers completely stopped importing because there is no more subsidy so we can’t sell for profit so we have to stop importing.

“So, the burden of importing 100% now fell on NNPC. So you can imagine a situation where NNPC was importing in part and marketers were importing in part and then suddenly NNPC begins to import 100%. Couple with the fact that in the months we called the ember months from October to December the consumption of petrol is highest in the country.

“So, you now have what we call a double warning. NNPC is suddenly finding its importing what they probably didn’t expect in terms of volume and the fact that Nigerians themselves are consuming more volume that they will normally consume in earlier months. Couple with the fact that the countries that are surrounding us as a nation are all selling fuel at more than $1 per liter. $1 today is about N360. If you go to Cotonou, Ghana, Niger so is is not unlikely that some of our petrol is finding itself across the border to these countries.

“All these are issues we believe amounted to what we saw in December but thankfully NNPC rose to the occasion, they stepped up import, stepped up supplies that situation has since normalized.

“Today’s meeting is to ensure that this does not happen again and this we are going to continue tomorrow in the committee that was set up under the chairmanship of the Minister of State for Petroleum to ensure that we find a long-lasting and enduring

Blackout Across Nigeria As Electricity Grid Collapses

Featured Image

There was blackout in some parts of Nigeria on Tuesday night after the country’s power transmission grid collapsed due to a fire incident on the Escravos Lagos Pipeline System of the Nigerian Gas Processing and Transportation Company Limited.

The incident led to a shutdown of the pipeline that supplies gas to six thermal power plants – Egbin 1,320MW; Olorunsogo NIPP 676MW, Olorunsogo 338MW, Omotosho NIPP 450MW, Omotosho 338 MW and Paras 60MW – which prompted the collapse of the country’s electricity grid at 10:20pm on Tuesday.

The Office of the Federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing made this known in a statement issued around 12:44am on Wednesday.

The ministry said it was regrettable that after a sustained period of increasing production and distribution of power since September 2017 to date, the Nigerian Gas Processing and Transportation Company Ltd reported a fire incident on its Escravos Lagos Pipeline System near Okada, Edo State on Tuesday, January 2, 2018.

It said, “The incident requires a shutdown of the pipeline supplying gas to Egbin 1,320megawatts; Olorunsogo NIPP 676MW; Olorunsogo 338MW; Omotosho NIPP 450MW; Omotosho 338 MW; and Paras 60MW power stations.

“The sudden loss of generation due to interruption in gas supply from these stations caused the national transmission grid to trip off around 20:20 on 2nd January 2018. The national transmission grid is owned and operated by the Transmission Company of Nigeria.”

Most of Nigeria’s power generation is from thermal power stations that require gas for fuel.

It would be recalled, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) had recently, announced an increase in the national peak level from 5,155.9MW to 5,222.3MWs.

Leaked Conversations From Aso Villa Demons’ First 2018 Meeting – Mayowa Tijani

CLICK here to read more opinion articles

At the banquet hall of the presidential residence, Abuja, the Aso Villa demons are having the first meeting of the year. Their meeting is characterised by a lot of laughter, mockery and of course, drums and songs for dancing.

After minutes of dancing, the chief demon steps in; the drums roll a for a minute more before coming to a halt. The demons sit in order of hierachy, as they await the words of the chief.

This piece was written by Mayowa Tijani and was first published on TheCable. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

(Chief clears throat to give the first speech of the year).

“Good evening gentlemen and ladies of the celestial villa, it is with great pleasure and a deep sense of gratitude that I welcome you to the first meeting of the year 2018.

“You all deserve a raise; your work in 2017 was remarkable. You recorded feats we have never seen in the history of this nation. Not even Sanni Abacha fell prey to our tricks as much as you made this man fall to them in 2017.

“For the first time in 57 years, we ensured that the man at the helm appointed masquerades (men of the world yonder) to his government to lead key agencies as board chairmen.

(Confusion and Delay, the demons responsible for this feat stand up and take a bow. The chief raises his right arm to make gestures of gratitude to the demons of the year 2017. He continues…).

“We gave them blind eyes to ignore the fracas between the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Department of State Services (DSS). We ensured that Baba Lawal was sent back to his house in Borno since he was not cooperating. How can he use only N200 million to cut grass, when his mates are using over N4 billion to maintain the villa.

“We should send special gifts to Baba Garba, Uncle Femi, Prof Tsetse Sirkay, and Abu Mallami as our men of the year 2017. They made our work extremely easy this year. For Baba Garba, he embarassed the president with his rodents on rampage narrative, making rats chase the president from office for over two months.

“For Uncle Femi, it was a move from one blunder to the other. To cap a remarkable year, he cooked a presidential documentary where visuals were faster than sound, showing the incompetent side of his media team and the other side of the president. To make our work easier, he insisted that the documentary be aired at a time when only himself and the team in the villa would watch it. Insensitivity, how did you pull that off?

(Insensitivity, a four-eyed demon stands up to answer the chief. He speaks…)

“My lord, I cannot take all the credit for that one o. Uncle Femi is a phenomenal man. He is simply a man who loves to see the positive side of everything. When his boys told him not to air the documentary, I just whispered to him: ‘your boys complain too much; in fact if they mistakenly find themselves in Heaven, they would even complain against God’. That was all I said, Uncle Femi did the rest.”

“In fact, it will be harder to convince governor Rochas to build a statue of George Weah than to get Uncle Femi to see the bad side of things.”

(Insensitivity takes a bow and sits. The chief continues…)

“We should send Maina’s golden gate to Mallami for a job well done. And perhaps send a beautiful whistle-blowing tip to Prof Sirkay, who added colour to our 2017.”

“A round of applause for you all. It was a remarkable year. Let us celebrate.”

(The demons turn up with irrational laughter, drumming, dancing, and drinking to a great 2017)

DEMONS REVIEW PLANS FOR 2018

(The chief calls for calm, as demons get seated for planning the new year. Chief speaks…)

“We need to plan; our vision for 2018 must be brighter and more daring that what we saw for 2017. We must excel, break records, and set landmarks, never seen in the history of this nation. So the floor is open, make your suggestions for the year.”

(Deception stands up and laughs continually for 18 minutes, as other demons join the laughter parade like drunk men. He stops abruptly and begins to speak)

“2018 is my year! As it is the last year before another general election, it is my time to shine. As it is my culture every year before an election, I would put a lying tongue in the mouth of almost everyone in the Villa. With this, I would effectively put the president in a bubble, detached from reality.

“I have started my work; as you must have noticed in the president’s speech on January 1. I put a lying tongue in the mouth of his speech writers to blame Nigerians for fuel scarcity, when in fact, it is an increase in global price of petrol, coupled with poor policies, and his lack of investment in local refining, that is causing this particular scarcity.

“With the remarkable patience Nigerians displayed in 2017, I made the president blame them for being so impatient.

“I would ensure that some young minds in this half of the villa tell other youths on social media that the president is the best thing that has happened in Nigeria after Jollof rice. I so submit.”

(The demons give deception a round of applause as political prostitution takes the stage)

“My lord, you know this is my time to shine too. I plan to find a way to the hearts of every politician that steps into the villa. This year, I will unveil my pet project called ‘cross-carpeting’. I have tried out my wand on Atikulate and Obanikoroad, and it worked just fine.

“I am planning on getting Tinuboot and Sir Raki to move, but both men are proving to be very stubborn. My lord, I shall try harder and bring you update by the time we meet again in February.”

(The Chief takes over…)

“Thank you for your brilliant contributions. I am afraid we have to halt the meeting for now; If all is well, the first Federal Executive Council meeting should be on, and we must attend to inspire some havoc.

“As we go, I want us to think really hard on why Nigerians say there are no demons in the Villa, when dead people are appointed as board chairmen. Personally, I think we have been operating too much in the background, let’s work harder to make it to the next list of appointees.

“Meeting adjourned.”

(They all rise as the chief leads the procession out of the hall).

Teenage Suicide Bomber Kills Father, 11 Worshippers In Borno Mosque Attack

Featured Image

A teenage suicide bomber has killed twelve persons including his father in a mosque in Gamboru town in Gamboru-Ngala Local Government Area of Borno in the early hours of Wednesday.

It was learnt that many other worshippers were injured and have been rushed to the nearest hospital for treatment in an incident that occurred at about 5:00am.

The teenage male suicide bomber detonated an Improvised Explosive Device (IED), strapped to his body in a mosque at Yobe area of Gamboru, near Nigeria’s border with Cameroon, during dawn prayers, said Ali Mustapha, an aid worker.

“I was on my way to dawn prayer, then I heard the sound of a loud bomb explosion inside the mosque,” Mustapha told Reuters.

“The mosque was destroyed and burnt,” he said. “After some hours, when we came to evacuation of the people, we saw 11 corpses, with the suicide bomber making (the total number of dead) 12.”

However, the Theatre Commander, Operation Lafiya Dole, Major General Rogers Nicholas, who confirmed the attack to NAN in Maiduguri, said that five persons were killed in the attack as against the 12 earlier reported.

He added that the troops had also neutralized a suicide bomber at Rann, headquarters of Kala-Balge local government area.

“Yes, but only five killed and another suicide bomber neutralized in Rann”.

In his own narration, Lawan Abba, a resident of Gamboru, disclosed that 10 persons were killed and six others sustained injuries in the attack.

Abba disclosed that the suicide bomber sneaked into a crowded mosque while people gathered to observe Morning Prayer and detonated the explosive.

He revealed that the teenage suicide bomber hailed from Gamboru town, adding that the father to the assailant was among the 10 persons, who lost their lives in the attack.

“The suicide bomber hailed from Gamboru town, he disowned his parents and joined the insurgents in the bush.

“He entered the mosque blew up himself into pieces and killed 10 persons including his biological father,” he said.

Abba added that the wounded persons were referred to the clinic in the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camp in the area for treatment.

Nobody claimed responsibility for the attack, but it bears the hallmarks of Boko Haram, a jihadist group which frequently uses suicide bombers, often women and girls, to attack crowded public spaces such as mosques and markets.

According to ThisDay reports, Amaechi, who was in charge of Buhari’s campaign in 2015, has already been issued a letter of appointment for next year’s election and would make an official announcement on his appointment anytime soon.

The President has hinted at re-contesting a few times in the past, but is refusing to officially share his aspirations openly.

Twice last year, Buhari had hinted at a possible presidential run, albeit subtly.

First, he did so during a summit on counter-terrorism in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire, and the second time last November, when he visited Kano State on a two-day working visit.

Sources close to the All Progressives Congress (APC), also hinted that although a majority of party members are not averse to Buhari’s re-election bid, they have advised that things be done properly.

The ruling party chieftains expect Buhari to reach out to them personally to intimate them of his re-election bid.

In the meantime, Amaechi, the sources revealed, would hold a press briefing in the next few days to announce his appointment as well as unveil the agenda for the Buhari 2019 project.

Aguero Eyes Champions League

Featured Image

Sergio Aguero has his sight set on winning the Champions League, as he believes Manchester City are in a good position to win the Premier League.

It has been a good season for Guardiola’s men and Aguero played a role in their winning run, scoring 13 goals in 17 appearances.

Manchester City are 15 points clear at the top of the table and face Basel in the UCL round of 16.

“The Premier League isn’t decided yet, but we are in a position of great strength to win it,” he told reporters.

“It’s my seventh year here, I know a bit about the league and the most important thing is to win points in December, and we have done that very well, we have to keep it going in the matches that are left.

“I would prefer to win the Champions League over the league because it’s something City haven’t won yet.”

Chelsea Recall Kasey Palmer And Ike Ugbo From Loan Spells

Featured Image

Kasey Palmer and Ike Ugbo have been recalled to Chelsea from their respective loans at Huddersfield and Barnsley.

Kasey Palmer was a key part of the Huddersfield side that got promoted last season but he has not featured as much this season, partly due to injury.

Huddersfield manager David Wagner explained: ‘Kasey is a great character and we’d like to wish him all the best for the future as he returns to Chelsea.

‘He was a big part in our successful promotion to the Premier League, but the hamstring injury he suffered made it difficult for him this season. He has struggled to hit his best level since his return to training and that’s why he hasn’t been able to earn a position in the team.’

Ike Ugbo was on loan with Championship side Barnsley, where he made 18 appearances and scored one goal.

In a statement, Barnsley – who are 19th in the table, wished the 19-year-old well.

‘Everyone at Barnsley Football Club would like to thank Ike for his efforts whilst at Oakwell and wish him the best of luck for his future career.’

Ugbo impressed Chelsea manager Antonio Conte when he scored in the FA Youth Cup final earlier this year.

How Nigeria’s Naira Fared Against US Dollar On Jan 2, 2018

Featured Image

Nigerian currency naira closed at 363 per United States dollar at the parallel market on Tuesday, January 2, 2018 – the same rate it closed before the New Year break on Friday.

The local currency, which has been hovering around 365/dollar for some months, rose to 364/dollar as the Christmas holiday approached.

“There Was Concern When Naira Traded At 500 To Dollar”

The naira later rose to 364/dollar last week before closing at 363/dollar on Friday.

Foreign exchange traders and currency analyst had predicted that the naira would be stable during the Christmas and New Year holidays.

According to them, the Central Bank of Nigeria’s regular interventions through the injection of dollars into the market would deter currency speculators from making a bet on the local currency.

Meanwhile, the naira has been hovering at 360/dollar at the Investors and Exporters FX Window, while it has been quoted at 306.05 at the official market, the level at which the central bank has been intervening.

Dear Nigerians, CBN Has Vowed To Jail Anyone Caught Abusing Naira Notes

The CBN has been injecting dollars into the forex market on weekly basis in the past few months.

President of ABCON warns that political spending may threaten Naira stability in 2018

The President, Association of Bureau De Change Operators of Nigeria, Alhaji Aminu Gwadabe, has warned that spending by politicians ahead of the 2019 general elections may threaten the stability of the naira.

Gwadabe said the propensity to hoard dollars now, to be spent during political campaigns, was not new to the nation’s political history.

“Political spending may affect exchange rate stability in 2018. Electioneering starts early this time and the tendency for people to hoard the dollar now, to be spent during the campaigns, is not new,’’ Gwadabe said.

The ABCON chief, therefore, called on the regulatory authorities and security operatives to ensure that currency hoarders and speculators do not leverage the 2019 elections to erode the gains recorded in the nation’s foreign exchange market.

Kogi Director Dies Of Heart Attack 3 Days After Receiving Sack Letter From Civil Service

Featured Image

A director in the Kogi State civil service, Mr. Alphonsus Ameh, has died barely three days after receiving a sack letter from the state government.

He died on Monday January 1, of suspected heart failure from aggravated high blood pressure, a family source told newsmen.

Civil Service Director Commits Suicide After Being Owed 11 Months’ Salary

Until his death, Ameh was a Director Administration and Finance (DAF) in the Kogi State Pension Board.

It was gathered that the late director was earlier suspended in February 2016 at the beginning of Governor Yahaya Bello’s administration.

The deceased, who hailed from Ade community in Olamaboro Local Government Area, before his death resided at Zone 8 area, opposite Science School, Lokoja, Kogi State.

A niece to the deceased who spoke on condition of anonymity to newsmen said that Ameh was among the directors and permanent secretaries that were suspended in February 2016.

The source said that Ameh, who was a Grade Level 16 officer in the Kogi State Pension Board, was not paid any salary since his suspension about two years ago.

According to the source, the 61-year-old civil servant, who officially received his sack letter on Friday, December 29, 2017, died in the early hours of Monday of high blood pressure at the Federal Medical Centre, Lokoja.

Meanwhile, the Kogi State Government has released the second batch of workers in the public service with forged certificates.

The list which included workers on both state and local government payrolls has almost 800 names.

In a statement issued and signed yesterday by the state Auditor General, Alhaji Yakubu Okala, he stated that government was committed to sanitising the public service and makes it the pride of the state.

It noted that it will accord top priority to the payment of salary this year and vowed to pursue programmes and policies that will impact on the lives of civil servants.

2019 Poll: Female Professor Declares Intention To Contest Nigeria’s Presidential Seat

Featured Image

A professor of Language and Communication Arts at the Rivers State University of Education, Prof. Olufumilayo Adesanya-Davies, on Tuesday declared her intention to contest Nigeria’s presidential seat during the 2019 general elections.

Speaking with newsmen on Tuesday in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital on her aspiration, Adesanya-Davis said she had consulted widely before making her intention known, adding that the sale of nomination forms free for women aspirants boosted her interest in the race.

She, however, said she was still keeping the platform of the party under which she would contest a secret.

Her words: “I am aspiring to be the next president of Nigeria. I am out to put laughter of joy in the mouth of all Nigerians. I have discussed this with the former presidential candidate, Sarah Jubril, who incidentally is from Kwara State. Her reaction was that ‘if a miracle like this will ever happen, we have paid the price in Kwara State and it is going to happen in the state.”

“Nigeria has opened the ground for the Nigerian women, my ticket is that of Nigerians, as the presidential form is free for women.”

“Historically, we will recall in 2015 another woman presidential candidate came, she floated a party called the KOWA party. Her name is Prof. Remi Sonaya, she was my lecturer at the Obafemi Awolowo University.”

“2015 was when I first thought about being a presidential aspirant. This is for the main reason that I was born on October 15th and I got married on October 15th. That time I said with President Goodluck Jonathan in the Peoples Democratic Party, I was going to be his running mate. I was sending text messages to him. I told him to let the then Vice-President Nnamadi Sambo step down for him to be successful but he did not listen to me.”

“But delay is not denial, that is why I am staging a comeback. I have done some consultations. The first person to put a call through was Patience Jonathan. I told her that I am picking the presidential form this time around and she endorsed my decision.”

“Our first thanks will go to the nation – Nigeria that says the ladies could pick nomination forms at every level. Nigeria is confident that the current challenges in the country can only be tackled by the women.”
