It is understood that the returnees are part of the first batch of over 3,000 persons that are expected to be evacuated to the country over a period of time.

The returnees arrived the Port Harcourt International Airport on Sunday with the aid of officials of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and displaced persons.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, said this is the first time the Federal Government will be sending such a strong delegation to any country to canvass for the release of Nigerians held in what he described as “inhuman conditions.”

Over the past weeks, several batches of migrants have been voluntarily assisted back home after their failed attempts to cross over to Europe through Libya.

On the back of news of slave trading and the brutal experiences of some migrants, which is sparking global criticism, the government subsequently promised to do all it can to ensure that all Nigerian (illegal) migrants are brought back to the country.

Liverpool Offer £50 Voucher For Fans Who Bought Philippe Coutinho Shirts

Featured Image

The first thing Liverpool have decided to do after pocketing £142 million from selling Philippe Coutinho is put a little money back in the pockets of some fans.

In the wake of Philippe Coutinho’s departure to Barcelona on Saturday, his former club said they would offer a £50 voucher to those who invested in this season’s shirt with the Brazilians’s name and number on the back.

A Liverpool statement said: “The offer — which applies to all shirts purchased in official club outlets and via the official LFC website — follows today’s announcement that Coutinho will join FC Barcelona and reflects the exceptional circumstances behind the player’s departure.”

At £50 a pop, Liverpool would need to accept 2,840,000 shirts to equal their windfall from the Coutinho sale.

The voucher will be enough to buy a new Liverpool shirt without a name and number on the back, which only seems appropriate.

Arsene Wenger Reveals Admiration For Former Nottingham Forest Manager Brian Clough

Featured Image

Arsene Wenger has revealed that he was an admirer of former Nottingham Forest manager Brian Clough when starting out as a manager

Brain Clough, who took charge of Nottingham Forest in 1975, claimed the first division title immediately after being promoted, while he also won two successive European Cups with the club

Arsenal meet Forest in the FA Cup on Sunday, and Wenger has hailed Clough as an influence on his own managerial career.

“Of course, Clough was one of the managers I used to look at when I was a young manager,” the Frenchman told The Mirror. “I looked at all the big managers who were successful.

“I spent time you would not believe going to see how managers worked, travelling in my car at night and watching the training in the morning, then going back home again.

“Today, everything is available, it’s easier. You go on the internet and you have every exercise of every single club. But at that time you had to look and it was a rarity to see – Brian Clough was like a guy on another planet.

Liverpool Have To Strengthen Squad After Losing Philippe Coutinho To Barcelona

Featured Image

Former Liverpool player Ray Houghton has said that the club must strengthen if they are to progress as a team following the transfer of Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona.

Philippe Coutinho’s £142m move, which came on Saturday is the biggest involving a British club and has left a hole in Liverpool’s attack, according to Houghton.

Coutinho, who scored 12 times in 20 appearances in the current campaign prior to his move to Spain, netted his last goal for the club in a 5-0 win over Swansea City.

“Over the years Liverpool have had Ian Rush, Kenny Dalglish, Steven Gerrard, Luis Suarez – and it’s the same thing,” Houghton told talkSPORT. “‘Oh we’ll never replace them.’ You can; of course you can.

“There’s different ways and means of doing it. It’ll be up to the others to start chipping in with more goals and more assists. But Liverpool are looking to build a squad, not only to get into the top four, but to win the league.

“And to do that there are other positions they have to strengthen. I think they need a top quality goalkeeper, another centre-half and probably another central midfield player as well.”

David Silva Given Permission To Return To Spain

Pep Guardiola has confirmed that midfielder David Silva will return to Spain to help tend to his premature son.

David Silva revealed earlier this week that his recent absence from the Man City first team was down to concerns over his newborn child’s health after he arrived prematurely and is now fighting for his life.

He wrote: “I want to thank all of you for the love and good wishes received in the last few weeks, special thanks to my teammates, the manager and all at the club for understanding my situation.

Also I want to share with you the birth of my son Mato, who was born extremely preterm and is fighting day by day with the help of the medical team.”

The Spaniard flew back to England to start Tuesday’s match against Watford and this afternoon’s FA Cup third round victory over Burnley, but he will now return to his home country once again.

Guardiola has stressed that Silva has been granted permission to miss as many games as he needs while dealing with the situation, and he is now a major doubt for Tuesday night’s EFL Cup semi-final first leg against Bristol City.

Claude Puel Wants To Keep Riyad Mahrez And Islam Slimani But Admits Ahmed Musa Could Leave

Featured Image

Claude Puel wants to keep Riyad Mahrez and Islam Slimani at Leicester City but has admitted Ahmed Musa could leave in January.

“This period is always a difficult period with speculation about different players,” Puel said. “I am happy with ‘Slim’. We have a lot of strikers and offensive players and we need to have good balance to give them game time.

“I am happy with him [Mahrez] and I think he is enjoying his football. He is happy to play with this team. He has good results with assists and goals in recent games. I think it is important he keeps this focus and concentration until the end of the season.

One player who could be on the way out of the King Power Stadium is Nigeria international Ahmed Musa, who failed to earn even a place on the bench against Fleetwood, despite Puel resting a number of starters.

“We will see [about Musa]. Perhaps it could be a possibility. We will see with the player and the opportunity for the club also. I need to have discussions about some players.”

Antonio Conte Slams Jose Mourinho, Calls Him “A Little Man”

Featured Image

Antonio Conte has hit back at Jose Mourinho, branding the Manchester United manager a “little man” as the war of words between the pair continues to escalate.

Jose Mourinho has clashed with Antonio Conte in the past and seemingly reignited the feud when he appeared to label Conte a “clown” for his actions on the touchline.

Conte responded by suggesting that Mourinho might have “senile dementia”, leading Mourinho to reference a match-fixing accusation which Conte was eventually cleared of during his time in charge of Serie B side Siena eight years ago.

The Italian believes that Mourinho’s comments prove that he is a “little man”, and insists that he is looking forward to settling their differences when Chelsea and United next meet.

“I think it’s difficult to answer this type of comment because when a person, their target is to offend and insult another person, [it means] you’re a little man,” Conte told reporters.

“We all know him very well. But it’s always the same. This is his way. It’s not a surprise for him. I think he’s a little man. Life goes on. I’m not worried about him. There is a good opportunity when we play against Manchester United for me and him to clarify [the issues] in a room.

“When you tell something, you must take the responsibility. If you try to speak and then keep the situation general you must have a big personality, big balls, to tell this.”

‘Bitcoin Banned By Islam’: Egypt’s Top Islamic Cleric Issues Fatwa Against Cryptocurrency

Featured Image

Egypt’s Grand Mufti Shawqi Allam has declared that the trading of the digital currency Bitcoin is unlawful; thus, issuing a sternly worded fatwa (religious edict) that trading with the cryptocurrency can lead its users to “fraud, betrayal and ignorance” and could be used by terrorists.

Allam also said that terrorist and criminal groups can abuse the crypto-currency to fund their illicit activities such as moving drugs and weapons, Daily Mail reports.

Egypt’s grand mufti Shawqi Allam (pictured) has declared the trading of the digital currency bitcoin unlawful – issuing a fatwa and calling it forbidden in Islam. (Reuters)

Egypt’s Grand Mufti is the highest official of Islamic law in Egypt and the one who issues legal opinions, fatwas and interpretations of Islamic jurisprudence.

The theological leader said in a published ruling that Bitcoin – launched in 2009 and based on a peer-to-peer payment system – poses ‘high risks to individuals and states.’

Suggesting his decision to declare a fatwa was based on discussions with economic experts, he concluded bitcoin is not permissible as it undermines the state – a central feature in Islamic sharia.

Minting and issuing currency is an ‘absolute right’ of monetary institutions and ‘one of the most specific functions of the state,’ said the country’s official interpreter of Islamic law.

“This currency is used directly to fund terrorists,” Ashour told Egypt Today, adding that its usage could cause major damage to the country’s economy.

“It has no set rules, which is considered as a contract annulment in Islam, that is why it is forbidden,” the counsellor said.

Last month, a team of Australian researchers found that nearly half of bitcoin trades they tracked over the past decade were used for illegal activities.

“Bitcoin is like all other currencies so what are the reasons that have suddenly made it so unlawful” said Atef Al Khateeb, a Cairo based Bitcoin trader who has set up a Facebook group to discuss the finer points of crypto-currencies and to help other new traders understand how to invest their money.

“It’s all commerce in the end, you win some, you lose some. Even the Prophet Muhammed was a trader”, he told Quartz.

The stateless digital currency has grown this week on the back of early Facebook investor, Peter Thiel’s bet rising in its price to over $15,000 after its bubble burst late last year with a sharp drop of 30% over six straight days.

There are no reliable figures on the number of bitcoin users in Egypt as its first bitcoin exchange only went live in August.

Bitcoin has been booming in other African countries such as Nigeria and Zimbabweowing to bypassing capital controls and weak foreign exchange markets.

Bitcoin is a virtual currency created from computer code.

It and other virtual currencies use blockchain, which records transactions that are updated in real time on an online ledger and maintained by a network of computers.

Its value surged as high as $19,500 in December from around $1,000 last January, but has slipped back after a series of warnings from governments and analysts about the risk and volatility associated with cryptocurrencies.

The Benue State Police Command has confirmed on Saturday that 10 people have again been killed in a fresh attack by the Fulani herdsmen in the troubled Logo Local Government Area of the State.

Speaking through its spokesman, ASP Moses Yamu, in a statement, said that a report was received from the area at about 7.30am on Saturday that suspected herdsmen entered Tse Akombo village in Mbamiage district ward and killed 10 persons.

It is understood that the armed nomads attacked the agrarian community in the early hours of Saturday and hacked the deceased to death in their homes.

The fresh attack is coming barely six days after the herdsmen attacked five communities in Guma and Logo local government areas of the state and killed over 50 persons.

In a similar tragedy, it was reported that a final-year student, Peter Aboh, was one of the victims of the Fulani herdsmen attacks in Benue State, on Friday and Saturday.

A certain Chukwudi Iwuchukwu posted an obituary on Facebook with two photographs: one with the young man’s image and the caption ‘Rest well – Ogbu Aboh Peter (Uncle P): 1990-2017’ and another showing a white coffin with women who appeared as mourners, standing close by.

In the post, Iwuchukwu said, “Peter Aboh was a final-year student of Microbiology at the Federal University, Lafia in Nasarawa State. He was due to graduate in eight months, before Fulani herdsmen gruesomely murdered him in his home in Utonkon in Ado LGA (Benue).”

Meanwhile, the State Governor, who is aware of the incident, has called for more deployment of security personnel in the state.

Oil Marketers Give Conditions To Allow Sale Of Petrol At N145 Per Litre

Featured Image

Oil marketers in Nigeria have given the federal government the conditions that will allow the sale of Premium Motor Spirit, popularly known as petrol, to remain at N145 per litre.

According to the oil marketers, the cost of petrol in the pricing template that is currently being reviewed will be determined by the rate of foreign exchange.

Nigeria May Consider Increasing Petrol Price To N180 Per Litre

The marketers added that petrol will only be imported if the rate of forex is suitable enough to encourage the importation of the commodity, despite the ongoing review of template by the Federal Government.

The Nigerian government had on Friday announced that it had commenced a review of the pricing template for petrol and insisted that the commodity would sell at N145 per litre.

But on Saturday, the oil marketers said the Federal Government could retain the cost of petrol at N145/litre after reviewing the pricing template, but outlined the conditions that will make this feasible for importers of petrol.

Speaking with The Punch, the National Vice President, Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, Abubakar Maigandi, disclosed that it was possible to review the pricing template for PMS and retain the cost of the commodity at N145/litre.

He said, “Yes, anything government says it wants to do on this issue can be considered possible because the minister had already outlined three conditions.

“The first condition has to do with regulation and the next is for the NNPC to sell at a given rate to marketers who will now add their margins, while the third is through forex (foreign exchange).

“So if the government can give forex to marketers, then automatically marketers can be able to sell at the rate of N145/litre.

“So whether the template is reviewed or not, one major factor is the issue of forex. Currently, the dollar is about N365 and if the government can make it available to marketers at a rate of about N250, then marketers will be able to sell the product at the rate of N145/litre when they import.”

“We hope that in the next 18 months our refineries will be in order, because that is what the minister said recently and he (Kachikwu) also said we are expecting other refineries to come on stream, like the Dangote refinery, as well as other modular refineries.

“But the truth is that as it is now, marketers cannot import petrol because of the cost of the commodity in the international market and the high forex rate.

“So we are expecting government to tell which of the listed conditions it will adopt so that this fuel crisis will end once and for all.”

He is right; the survival kit in Nigeria is not filled with patriotism, truthfulness and being forthright. You don’t have to be peace-loving or enthusiastic about development, no matter what you do, just don’t be poor!

But if providence has not ‘smiled’ on you yet and your hustle, no matter how legal or illegal it is, has not paid off, try as much as possible to build a formidable network with those in the corridors of power, especially if you do not reside in the city but in remote villages in Benue, Kaduna, Taraba, Adamawa, and so on. Failure to do this is equal to a death sentence that one you might not escape from.

If you have the right network, you and your colleagues can go to any village and farm, ransack the entire area, rape the occupants, machete the residents, butcher toddlers, kill pregnant women and slice open the fetus, chop-off the heads of the children and burn their houses for daring to chase your cows from their farms. After all, there is nothing bad in cows – who are God’s superior creature to men, wandering across other people’s farm and eating up the vegetables, lettuces, yam, maize and tomatoes they toil day and night to plant. Cows are frictional mammals whose movements are guided only by divine. They are superior to human beings. After all, was it not said that God created animals before humans?

If you and your friends find favour in the sight of the divine and you are able to land the president as your grand patron, that’s a jackpot! Rejoice for you have been observing your ‘salat’ diligently and it’s time for a reward.

Having the president as a grand patron comes with lots of perks. You become untouchable, literarily. No matter what you do, no matter who you do them to, no matter where and how you do them, no individual born of man or woman can hold you accountable. When some says the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Nigerian Police Force, the Nigerian Armed Forces and the State Security Service are the most brutal across the country, don’t say a word, just smile. Deep down inside you, you know the activities of Boko Haram are merely soft in nature and by your estimate, you know strapping kids with suicide bombs and laying landmines for soldiers do not measure up to the casualties you can record during a single farm attack of yours.

Let the villagers keep shouting and the communities continue staging protests upon protest, writing letters and petitions, you are assured that your grand patron will fling them all out and look away. Grand patrons are bonded by esprit de corps, they see no evil, hear no evil and speak no evil of their protégés. In fact, when protests are becoming too much, you can count on the grand patron to order the police to open fire on the noisy ones disturbing the peace of the society.

Forget all the talks about ill-equipped security forces, by your closeness with the grand patron, you have access to the best of guns and firearms money can buy. Oh yes! You need the weapons, in case some of your victims are proving too difficult to kill (I don’t understand why people won’t just be civil enough to comport themselves rightly when being machetted), and in case some overzealous police officers try to disobey direct orders from above, the AK-47 riffle comes in handy.

But remember the relationship between you and your grand patron is symbiotic in nature; whilst you count on him to turn the blind eye while you massacre your albatrosses, you must be there for him when he needs you to win a election or re-election. While you are having a field day burning down houses and dancing to the helpless cries and agonies of your victims, remember to keep your voter’s card closely and not to lose it. Your grand patron needs it and you can’t afford to fail him.

Don’t be like the foolish ones who started feeling too powerful after helping him into office. Remember your grand patron is a very powerful person; learn from the Shiites. You don’t want to see the anger of your grand patron. If he gets angry, a tap on the chest of a General is enough to wipe out your entire generations. Don’t be unfortunate!
