Borussia Dortmund Team Bus Bomber “Didn’t Intend To Kill Anybody”

Featured Image

On the 11th of April 2017, the tour bus of German football team Borussia Dortmund was attacked with roadside bombs in Dortmund, Germany.

Three bombs exploded as the team were on their way to the stadium for the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final against french side, Monaco.

The suspect, Sergei W, 28, told a court in Dortmund that he had not intended to kill anyone. According to Sergei, the attack which left defender, Marc Bartra, with a fractured wrist and a police officer with hearing loss was done to aid a gamble.

Prosecutors revealed that on the day of the attack, he invested €78,000 in the Dortmund share price dropping with a possible profit of up to €3.9 million if the share price were to plummet after a successful attack, but it only dropped by 5% after the attack and later recovered. The unusual transaction raised suspicion among bank employees, and they alerted authorities which led to his arrest

He has been charged with 28 counts of attempted murder, which he denies claiming that he had designed the explosives so that “that no harm to people could be expected”. But he told the court: “I deeply regret my behaviour”. He went on trial on 21 December.

Sergei faces a life sentence if found guilty of the charges.

Nigerian Banks Bar ATM Cash Withdrawal Abroad

Featured Image

A report has emerged that some Deposit Money Banks in Nigeria have barred their customers from using debit and credit cards to withdraw dollars, euros, pounds and other foreign currencies whenever they travel abroad.

The development will no doubt put business and leisure travellers, who may need hard currencies to meet some obligations abroad, in a difficult situation.

How Nigeria’s Naira Fared Against US Dollar On Jan 2, 2018

This is just as students who are studying abroad and often rely on withdrawing hard currencies with their Nigerian payment cards from Automatic Teller Machines abroad to meet certain needs may find the situation challenging.

In an investigation carried out by The Punch, it was revealed that the naira volatility of the past year is responsible for the development.

It was gathered that Guaranty Trust Bank Plc, Fidelity Bank Plc, Stanbic IBTC Bank and Standard Chartered Bank Nigeria were among the lenders that had suspended their ATM cash withdrawal services.

A top baker who pleaded not to be mentioned told the news outlet that:

“Each bank has various reasons for not yet activating their overseas ATM cash withdrawal service. For some banks, they ran into losses last year when the naira fell and, as such, they are trying to minimise their risks now.”

“For such banks, there is no plan to reactivate it. Some others banks are not ready to reactivate the service because they are trying to check customers who are doing round-tripping. It is for various reasons that the banks are not stopping yet.”

Usain Bolt Reveals He’s Having Trials At Borussia Dortmund In March

Featured Image

Usain Bolt has revealed that he will have a trial with Borussia Dortmund in March 2018

Usain Bolt, who has won eight Olympic gold medals, retired after damaging his hamstring in his last ever race at the World Championships in London last year.

Bolt, a staunch Manchester United fan, has since recovered from his injury and, speaking to The Express, reiterated his desire to switch sports and potentially seal a dream move to Old Trafford.

“The injury is now fine and I’m back fully fit,” said Bolt. “In March we’re going to do trials with Dortmund and that will determine what I do with that career, which way it goes. If they say I’m good, and that I need a bit of training, I’ll do it.

“It makes me nervous. I don’t get nervous but this is different, this is football now. It’ll take time to adjust but once I play a few times I’ll get used to it. It was the same when I started track and field. I was nervous for a while until I started getting used to the crowd, people and everyone around and it falls into place.

“One of my biggest dreams is to sign for Manchester United. If Dortmund say I’m good enough, I’ll crack on and train hard. I’ve spoken to Alex Ferguson and I told him he needs to put in a good word. He told me if I get fit and ready, he will see what he can do.”

Manchester City Players Discuss Winning The Quadruple- Oleksandr Zinchenko

Featured Image

Manchester City youngster Oleksandr Zinchenko has admitted that talk of winning the quadruple this season is a hot conversation topic in the team dressing room.

Manchester City remain in the hunt for the Premier League, Champions League, EFL Cup and FA Cup following the 4-1 win over Burnley in the third round

Although Pep Guardiola has dismissed his side’s chances of a clean sweep of trophies this season, Zinchenko made it clear that the players discuss the likelihood of going one better than Manchester United’s treble-winning side of 1998-99.

“We think about this every single day and every training session – we can win everything, and that’s why we are here,” the Ukrainian told the Manchester Evening News.

The manager told me I had to be ready for my chance. I am happy to be part of this team and train hard every day.’

Burnley skipper Ben Mee is a graduate of City’s academy and agreed that his old club are capable of a clean sweep.

‘Anyone can do all four trophies and it depends how they go on now,’ said Mee.

‘City have unbelievable quality but they work hard as a team and very well organised. That gets missed sometimes.

‘They are looking good at the minute and it’s going to take a good team to stop them, that’s for sure.’

Stoke City Needs To Sign Players With Big Characters- Jack Butland

Featured Image

Stoke goalkeeper Jack Butland has urged the club to make some moves in the January transfer window.

“I think it would help,” he is quoted as saying by the Stoke Sentinel. “We need some big characters. We need to get some ability, some more talent in and get a lot better at playing as a team, because we’ve not been doing that.”

Stoke’s defeat at the Ricoh Arena led to the dismissal of manager Mark Hughes.

Butland, speaking shortly before Hughes was sacked, added: “We can’t get much lower at the minute, it’s been a tough time of late and everyone can see that. We’re not happy with the way we’re playing. Everyone is pretty low and it does feel like the only way we can go from here is upwards.

“There’s only us that can change it and we have to make sure we do.”

Jack Butland admits he’s been fuming about the regularity he’s been picking the ball out of the net.

“Yes, I am,” he said. “Like the result at Coventry it’s embarrassing and difficult to swallow. It’s only ourselves to blame as a team, we’ve given up too many chances, we’ve not defended well as a team, too many individual errors.

“It’s been well below bar from our standards so a lot of things have got to change and being able to keep the ball out of our own net is one of the most important ones.

Philippe Coutinho Can Bring A Lot To Barcelona- Ernesto Valverde

Featured Image

Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde has expressed his eagerness to work with Philippe Coutinho

Philippe Coutinho completed a £142m switch to Camp Nou after both Liverpool and Barcelona announced that an agreement had been reached, making the 25-year-old the second-most expensive player of all time.

The Brazilian has agreed a contract through to 2023 with the Blaugrana and Valverde is aiming to make the most of the attacker’s adaptability and ability to play in a range of positions.

“I think he can bring a lot to the team. He scores and sets up goals, and going forward he can help us a lot as he can play both inside and out wide,” Valverde told reporters after Barca’s 3-0 win over Levante on Sunday. “He is versatile and we can take advantage of his versatility.

“It is a signing that has been talked about for a long time, although it was not something I was keen to discuss. He is here now, and good luck to him, because if he has luck then it will be good for us.

“We will wait until I have seen him train for a day at least until we talk about (how Coutinho will fit into the team), it is true that I have seen videos of him playing in different positions, for Liverpool and for his country. But let’s wait and see. I hope he adapts quickly, although good players adapt quickly to any circumstances.”

If I may ask, how many of these companies or industries are still operating today? The truth is that most of them have ceased to operate. Why? MISMANAGEMENT. Am aware that President Muhammadu Buhari is preparing to pour money into re-activating the Ajaokuta Steel Company. But what about others? But the story is not the same with some foreign companies operating in Nigeria established years ago. Let’s take a look. May & Baker was the first pharmaceutical company to be founded in Nigeria, having been incorporated in 1944. Many of the company’s leading brands are house-hold names in ethical pharmaceutical and family health-care products. The company maintains technical and management services agreement with Rhone-Poulenc Rorer, one of the leading pharmaceutical companies in the world and a major stakeholder. May & Baker Nigeria’s leading brands include M&B Tixylix (a paediatric cough medicine), Oruvail (a anti-rheumatic), Peflacine (a antibiotic), Flagyl (a anti-infective) and vaccines. Over 75 percent of its sales are derived from human pharmaceuticals, manufactured at its Ikeja, Lagos factory. Its suppliers cut across indigenous and foreign companies. The major off-shore suppliers are Rhone-Poulenc Rorer SA of France and Rhone-Poulenc Rorer Exports Limited of United Kingdom. At the local level, the major suppliers include Smurfit Cases Nigeria Limited, Avon Crown Caps Limited and Guinea Glass Limited.

Paterson Zochonis & Company Limited of Manchester, England commenced business in Nigeria in 1899 as a traditional West African merchant. The major Landmark in PZ’s development in Nigeria came after the Second World War, when the company acquired P.B. Nicolas & Company Limited, a small soap factory in Aba in 1948. The name was changed to Alagbon Industries Limited in 1953 and then to Associated Industries Limited in 1960. The name was finally changed to Paterson Zochonis Industries Plc in 1976. Today, since its incorporation in Nigeria, the PZ group of companies now spans a wide range of manufacturing and commercial activities scattered across Nigeria.

Nigerian Bottling Plc’s path to greatness began in a modest way in November 22, 1951, when it was incorporated as a private limited company, to establish and operate factories for the bottling and distribution of soft drinks in Nigeria. It rolled out its first cases of Coca-Cola in 1953 from one plant bottling operation in Oyingbo, Lagos State. Since then, NBC and Coca Cola have become synonymous in Nigeria and this dynamic company is the largest bottler of soft hard drinks in Nigeria, and a bottling giant in Africa.

The Nigerian Breweries Plc, the pioneer and largest brewing company in Nigeria, was incorporated in 1946 and recorded a landmark when the first bottle of Star Lager Beer rolled off the bottling lines in its Lagos brewery in June 1949. This was followed by the building of the Aba Brewery, which was commissioned in 1957, the Kaduna Brewery in 1963, and Ibadan Brewery in 1982. In September 1993, the company acquired its fifth Brewery in Enugu. Thus, from its humble beginning in 1946, the company now has five breweries from which its high quality products are bottled and then distributed to all parts of this country. Nigeria Breweries Plc has a portfolio of six high quality brands: Star Lager Beer; Gulder Lager Beer; Maltina, with its winsome strawberry, exotic fruits and classic varieties; Legends Extra Stout, Amstel Malta; and Schweppes range of carbonated soft drinks (Schweppes Bitter Lemon, Schweppes Tonic and Schweppes Soda Water). Together, the brands have facilitated its strong leadership position in the total brewed products market in Nigeria.

Julius Berger Nigeria Plc began operation in Nigeria in 1965 with the construction of Eko Bridge. It was incorporated on February 18, 1970 as a civil engineering firm. The competence with which the company executes contracts won the confidence of Nigerians. A few prominent works executed by the company include: Third Apapa Wharf Extension and Tin Can Island Ports in Lagos, Sapele and Warri Ports in Delta State. Others are the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Apapa Oshodi Expressway, Lagos Inner Ring Road, Lagos Eti-Osa Road Phase I and II, Amuwo Odofin Road, Lekki Peninsula Road Scheme I, Igbokuta-Imota Road. It also built the Ajaokuta Road Bridge in Kogi State, Jebba Road Bridge in Kwara State, Ethiope and Jamieson Bridge at Sapele, New Carter Bridge with its West Ramp, Third Mainland Bridge (Oworonsoki End) and Opebi Bridge in Lagos.

Lever Brothers Nigeria Plc, the longest surviving manufacturing outfit in Nigeria has seen the best, as well as worst in Nigeria’s economy over the last 74 years. The company came into existence in 1923 through the efforts of a pioneering entrepreneur, Lord Leverhulme, who rather than taking palm oil from Nigeria to make soap in England and shipping it back to sell to us, decided to manufacture the soap right here where the palm oil is produced. It should therefore not be surprising that Lever Brothers has since been in the forefront of local raw material development and backward integration. Lever Brothers Nigeria PLC was re-classified as a conglomerate a few years ago. The company started as a soap company and expanded to non-soapy detergents. The company later went into foods, producing table margarines and bakery fats and eventually went into personal products, producing dental care products, creams, jeellies and lotions. Nestle Foods Nigeria Plc is a leading food manufacturing and marketing company renowned for its top quality products. The company began simple trading operations in Nigeria in 1961. The company’s manufacturing facilities, located at Agbara Industrial Estate in Ogun State, produce Nido milk, Cerelac, Nutrend and Cerelac Chocolate – baby weaning foods; Golden Morn, an instant breakfast cereal; Milo, Nescao, Chocolim – beverage drinks; Choco Milo – chocolate sweet; Maggi cubes, Maggi Super Onion Spices, Maggi Chicken, Maggi Crayfish, Maggi Mutton Tomatoe and Maggi Pepper Soup – kitchen seasonings; and Maggi 2-Minute Noodles.

These are companies operating in Nigeria that have expatriates connections. Some faced certain problems a few years ago, including Guiness Nigeria Limited, but they have since bounced back.

Zidane Not After New Signings

Featured Image

Zinedine Zidane insists he does not need any addition to his squad, as he shoulders the blame for their poor campaign.

Los Blancos fell 16 points behind Barcelona, after playing a 2-2 draw against Celta Vigo.

Madrid who have no hope of winning the La Liga, are rumoured to be interested in Courtois, Hazard and Kane among others.

Asked if Madrid need reinforcements, Los Blancos coach Zidane replied: “No, at the moment I do not want anyone.

“Until the 31st [of January] we will see, but not at the moment, why? Because I am happy with my squad.”

Cahill Hails Phenomenal Barkleykle

Featured Image

Chelsea captain, Gary Cahill had hailed the signing of Ross Barkley, and believes the phenomenal player was signed at a bargain.

The former Everton midfielder joins the Blues for £15 million on a five-and-a-half-year contract.

Barkley is expected to train with the squad today ahead of the Carabao cup against Arsenal, and Cahill expects great things.

“Phenomenal,” Cahill said in reaction to Barkley’s move to the Blues. “I think it is a great signing. It is a bargain. Looking at this market, in this day and age, it is a snip for a player like him. I’ve played with him and trained with him and I know what the boy is capable of, so does everyone else.

“He’s capable of whatever he wants, if you look at him, he reminds me of Ruben [Loftus-Cheek] in terms of his attributes. Has he got a good left foot? A good right foot? Is he strong? Is he quick? And can he finish? Is he good on the ball? He ticks all the boxes.

“All he needs is a platform just to go and express himself. This club will give him that, like they gave me and gave to other players. It is a big step and it is a good signing. For the money, it has to be a bargain.

“He’s come at a great age. He’s a fantastic age. I say [to him] come here and be confident, but not arrogant. Be confident, but listen and learn from the top players at this football club. Work hard at your game and then you will progress. He knows what he’s got to do.

“Listen, you’re not talking about a young player here. We’re talking about a player that has got over 20 England caps and a player that has played so many games in the Premier League. Even at such a young age, he won’t be needing too much advice from me.

“I’m sure he has that hunger. I text him before he came to see where he is and what not. I think he trained yesterday so I will bump into him on Monday when I get back [to training].”

Kogi Retires 8 Perm Secs, Fires 1,774 Workers

Featured Image

The Kogi State Government on Sunday confirmed the retirement of eight permanent secretaries, some directors and the dismissal of 1,774 employees from the state civil service.

The News Agency of Nigeria gathered in Lokoja that the affected members of staff were served their letters last December.

The letters were signed by the state’s Head of Service, Mrs. Deborah Ogunmola, and the Chairman of the state Civil Service Commission, Mr. Ado Shaibu.

A copy of the retirement letter addressed to one of the affected permanent secretaries indicated that the retirement was “in the interest of the public.”

Some of the affected permanent secretaries said they were contemplating legal action.

But the Chief Press Secretary to the state Governor, Mrs. Petra Akinti-Onyegbule, defended the action, saying it was a part of the ongoing reforms in the civil service.

She said the retirement affected only permanent secretaries that had served for four years and above.

“The retired permanent secretaries have been paid their consolidated benefits that accrued to them.

“Also affected are civil servants who have attained the special salary grade level 17,” she said.

The governor’s media aide added that directors that served for eight years and above would also be affected.

She said the exact number of directors to be affected would be based on the outcome of the recent promotion interviews.

“In order to get the best replacement for the retired permanent secretaries, directors who have been in office for eight years but who have yet to attain retirement age or maximum number of years in office were given the opportunity to partake in the exams to fill the positions of permanent secretaries.

“The result of the examinations which held on Tuesday, December 12, 2017 and followed by interviews is not yet out.

“Until the result is out, we will not be able to put a definite figure on the number of directors that will be affected by the compulsory retirement,’’ she said.

The chief press secretary also confirmed that 1,667 workers with fake certificates were dismissed from the state civil service.

She said those dismissed were uncovered during the screening carried out by the state government in 2016 and 2017.

Akinti-Onyegbule also said 107 other workers were dismissed for engaging in fraudulent activities.

Pochettino: Spurs Cannot Force Kane To Stay

Featured Image

Mauricio Pochettino believes winning trophy at Tottenham, will go a long way in convincing Harry Kane to stay.

The England international striker scored two goals in the FA cup third round clash, beating AFC Wimbledon 3-0.

Harry Kane is in high demand because of his scoring prowess and is being courted by Madrid.

And Pochettino believes promise of silverware is what will keep Kane at the club.

“I think Harry is special. He loves Tottenham and he feels Tottenham,” Pochettino said of his star striker, who scored 56 goals in 2017.

“But we need to be careful and clear in how we manage him. Then the player needs to choose to stay here. You cannot force everyone to stay here.

“Our job is to try to work together and try to achieve everything we want. Of course, Harry is a special player. He seems like [Roma legend, Francesco Totti].

“Only a few players can stay at a club their whole career and Kane can be someone like that. But in football nothing is sure.

“Today is today and after tomorrow you always doubt what happens. So it’s important that we must achieve everything we want together.”

Roy Hodgson Believes He’s A Very Good Manager

Featured Image

Roy Hodgson has defended his record in management after revealing he has already tried and failed to retire.

After a disappointing conclusion to his time with England at Euro 2016, Roy Hodgson has rebuilt his reputation at Crystal Palace by inspiring a team that were near-certainties for relegation when he was appointed in September to only one defeat in their past 11 games.

And, reflecting on his career, he said:

“I’ve been working for 41 years: I’ve got so many titles. I’ve been manager of the year, I’ve got goodness knows how many manager of the month awards.

“I’ve had 100-odd games for national teams and 150 in European competitions.”

“There have been moments when we (Hodgson and wife Sheila) have discussed retirement, mainly on the basis that she’s made a lot of sacrifices to do the thing that I want to do, namely football management.

“It’s given us both an extremely good life and we’re both grateful for that. There have been moments when we’ve thought, ‘Is this the moment to do something else?’. Well, we tried that for a year, and she came to the conclusion that she better let me back in for a little bit longer.”

“You’ve Failed Nigerians” – Northern Youth Groups Tell Buhari Not To Contest In 2019

Featured Image

With the 2019 general elections around the corner, a coalition of youth groups in Northern Nigeria has called on President Muhammadu Buhari not to seek re-election, adding that he has failed Nigerians.

This is coming on a day that the result of a poll conducted by a prominent Nigerian newspaper showed that many Nigerians may not vote for President Buhari if he decides to seek re-election in 2019.

The northern youth groups said the president had shown lack of care and sympathy for Nigerians, at a time of fuel scarcity, rising cost of living and wanton destruction of lives and property, as currently being witnessed in Benue, Kaduna and Adamawa states.

The leaders of the coalition, called Northern Youth Coalition, made this known when they addressed pressmen at the Press Centre in Kano on Sunday.

Premium Times quoted the coalition as saying that they were dissatisfied with Mr. Buhari’s performance as president and that seeking re-election “could be a disgraceful move.”

The leader of the coalition, Abdulmajid Saad and his secretary, Salisu Indabawa, said this on behalf the coalition that they said comprised 36 youth groups.

He said: “We observed with utmost dismay that three years after the current leadership came into power, Nigerians are already disappointed with the way things are going.”

“This was characterised by the president’s deafening ears to the yearnings of the citizenry as witnessed in the falling standard of attainment of basic of life needed by ordinary Nigerians.”

“We also observed poor healthcare services delivery to the whole nation. Corruption has taken new dimensions on high scale, standard of living of most Nigerians has deteriorated, while injustice, insecurity and high level of impunity has become a recurring decimal.”

They added that the victory recorded in the fight against Boko Haram was insufficient to campaign with, as insecurity had worsened in other areas with kidnapping and ethnic violence on the rise.

Arewa Kicks:

In the same vein, the Arewa Youth Forum (AYF) had some days ago questioned President Buhari’s planned bid to re-contest in 2019.

AYF, in a statement by its head, Alhaji Ibrahim Gambo Gugungu, kicked against Buhari’s second term bid, describing such as insensitive, inhuman and insulting to the entire northern youths, Vanguard reports.

“We are also worried that Nigerians had to go through the yuletide with agony and pains because of the fuel scarcity which still persist into the new year with the Federal government not having a definite roadmap to ending the malaise.

“This scenario was also compounded by the prevailing hardship Nigerians have been going through because of the actions and inactions of politicians and the elite who we believed have not done enough to assuage the plight of the ordinary Nigerians.

“If you add these challenges to the corruption allegations that had plagued some top ranking officers of this administration and the inability or refusal of Mr. President to address same leaves a sour taste in the mouth of many Nigerians.

“Consequently, we are appalled to hear that in the midst of all these the president and his men have already put in place measures to kick start his re – election bid for 2019.

“As the apex body of youths in the 19 Northern states and Abuja with affiliates across the country, we see the re election bid of Mr. President at this point in time inhuman, uncalled for and an insult to the sensibilities of the suffering Nigerian masses.

“On the magnitude of the killings, we expect the president to visit some of the states and when he came to Kaduna, he should have condoled with the people or even visited the affected area,”

“It is disheartening that when the President visited Kaduna State, black marketers were having a field day as many of the stations where closed and the people where buying fuel at over 350/litre. This we believe is not good enough.

“Nigerians expect a more purposeful leadership from the champion of change than this anarchy in the land and the time to act is now, Mr. President,” the youths warned.

Meanwhile, Buhari is yet to officially declare his intention ahead of 2019, however, there are strong indications that he will seek a second term.

The Minister of Communications, Adebayo Shittu, had some days ago said although the President had not made up his mind on the 2019 presidential election, he must seek re-election because he had “done well so far.”

Full Text And Video Of Oprah Winfrey’s Powerful Speech At The 2018 Golden Globes Award

Featured Image

Oprah Winfrey brought down the 2018 Golden Globes Hall on Sunday night, in a rousing nine-minute speech that paid tribute to civil rights figure Recy Taylor

Oprah Winfrey declared that “time is up” for the men who have long silenced women and promised today’s girls that “a new day is on the horizon.”

Oprah Winfrey was accepting this year’s Cecil B. DeMille Award – She opened her speech with an anecdote about watching Sidney Poitier win his Oscar in 1964 (“I’d never seen a black man being celebrated like that”), before recounting her early days on A.M. Chicago and how Quincy Jones championed her to be cast in Steven Spielberg’s The Color Purple.

Oprah then moved into the topic of the night — the #TimesUp movement, in support of which all of those in attendance wore black.

She cited the story of Recy Taylor, an African-American sharecropper who, at age 24 in 1944, was walking home from church in Abbeville, Ala. when she was abducted and raped by six white men. The NAACP sent Rosa Parks to investigate and (unsuccessfully) pursue charges against the assailants. Taylor died last month at 97.

“For too long, women have not been heard or believed if they dare to speak their truth to the power of [brutally powerful] men,” Winfrey said. “But their time is up.”
“A new day is on the horizon!” she later said. “And when that day finally dawns, it will be because of a lot of magnificent women… and some pretty phenomenal men, fighting hard to make sure that… nobody ever has to say, ‘Me too’ again!”

Winfrey’s speech drew a standing ovation, bathed in many tears from those in the audience.

Here’s the video and full text of the speech

The following is the full text of Oprah Winfrey’s speech as she accepted the Cecil B. DeMille Award at Sunday’s Golden Globe Awards:

Hi. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you all. OK. OK. Thank you, Reese. In 1964, I was a little girl sitting on the linoleum floor of my mother’s house in Milwaukee watching Anne Bancroft present the Oscar for Best Actor at the 36th Academy Awards. She opened the envelope, and said five words that literally made history: “The winner is Sidney Poitier.” Up to the stage came the most elegant man I had ever seen. I remember his tie was white and, of course, his skin was black. And I’d never seen a black man being celebrated like that. And I have tried many, many, many times to explain what a moment like that means to a little girl, a kid watching from the cheap seats as my mom came through the door, bone tired from cleaning other people’s houses. But all I can do is quote and say that the explanation in Sidney’s performance in “Lilies of the Field,” ‘’Amen, amen. Amen, amen.”

In 1982, Sidney received the Cecil B. DeMille Award right here at the Golden Globes, and it is not lost on me that at this moment, there are some little girls watching as I become the first black woman to be given this same award.

It is an honor — it is an honor and it is a privilege to share the evening with all of them and also with the incredible men and women who inspire me, who challenge me, who sustain me, and made my journey to this stage possible. Dennis Swanson, who took a chance on me for “AM Chicago.” Quincy Jones, who saw me on that show and said to Steven Spielberg, “Yes, she is Sofia in ‘The Color Purple.’” Gayle, who has been the definition of what a friend is. And Stedman, who has been my rock. Just a few to name.

I’d like to thank the Hollywood Foreign Press Association because we all know that the press is under siege these days, but we also know that it is the insatiable dedication to uncovering the absolute truth that keeps us from turning a blind eye to corruption and to injustice —to tyrants and victims and secrets and lies. I want to say that I value the press more than ever before as we try to navigate these complicated times, which brings me to this: What I know for sure is that speaking your truth is the most powerful tool we all have. And I’m especially proud and inspired by all the women who have felt strong enough and empowered enough to speak up and share their personal stories. Each of us in this room are celebrated because of the stories that we tell. And this year we became the story. But it’s not just a story affecting the entertainment industry. It’s one that transcends any culture, geography, race, religion, politics, or workplace. So I want tonight to express gratitude to all the women who have endured years of abuse and assault because they, like my mother, had children to feed and bills to pay and dreams to pursue.

They’re the women whose names we’ll never know. They are domestic workers and farm workers. They are working in factories, and they work in restaurants, and they’re in academia and engineering and medicine and science. They’re part of the word of tech and politics and business. They are athletes in the Olympics, and they are soldiers in the military. And there’s someone else: Recy Taylor, a name I know and I think you should know too. In 1944, Recy Taylor was a young wife and a mother. She was just walking home from the church service she’d attended in Abbeville, Alabama, when she was abducted by six armed white men, raped, and left blindfolded by the side of the road coming home from church. They threatened to kill her if she ever told anyone, but her story was reported to the NAACP, where a young worker by the name of Rosa Parks became the lead investigator on her case. And together they sought justice. But justice wasn’t an option in the era of Jim Crow. The men who tried to destroy her were never persecuted. Recy Taylor died 10 days ago, just shy of her 98th birthday. She lived as we all have lived, too many years in a culture broken by brutally powerful men. For too long, women have not been heard or believed if they dared to speak their truth to the power of those men, but their time is up.

NMA: Doctors Embark On Strike In Kogi State

Featured Image

Doctors under the aegis of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) in Kogi State on Sunday directed its members to resume strike on Monday over an alleged failure by the state government to meet their demands.

The decision was reached two days after the State Governor Yahaya Bello said he borrowed N10 billion in addition to the last tranche of Paris Club refund to clear salary backlog.

Bello had said the state had settled all workers.

He had said: “In Kogi state today, we are up to date as far as salary is concerned. In the month of December like Mr President magnanimously assisted us with another tranche of Paris Club Refund, our own figure was N1.2 billion and some other change on top.”

“We didn’t just stop at that, we borrowed up to N10 billion and we added November/December allocation to our figures and we were able to clear four months at a stretch before Christmas and some leftover were cleared before this January in Kogi state.

“We were able to distribute it among these months. So, glory to God as far as Kogi state is concerned, we are not owing salaries.”

But the NMA said it has directed its members to resume strike on Monday over state government’s failure to meet their demands.

Speaking on Sunday in Lokoja, the state capital, Godwin Tijani, chairman of the association, said the inability to pay the doctors’ full salaries was unacceptable.

According to Tijani, even some doctors are yet to be paid.

“Congress, therefore, resolved that all its members across the state should resume total and indefinite withdrawal of healthcare services from all hospitals in Kogi, with effects from 12:00 midnight on Sunday, Jan 7, 2018.

“We want government to give a definite time line for the full implementation of adjusted CONMESS (new salary structure) for doctors in the state civil service and the accrued arrears since January, 2014.

“Congress will reconvene once the state government responds appropriately to the aforementioned demands,” he said.
