Ambode Vows To Clean Up Lagos State

The Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode on Saturday assured the states residents that waste deposited on major highways and streets around the state would no longer be visible in a couple of weeks.
The Governor spoke at the Lagos State House, Ikeja after inaugurating the new board of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC).

The Special Adviser on Education, Mr Obafela Bank-Olemoh who represented the governor, said the new waste management policy of government encapsulated in the Cleaner Lagos Initiative (CLI) was designed to holistically address the challenges in the sector.

“Let me assure the people that in the coming weeks, there will be improvement. We are already witnessing a high-level of improvement; we promise that throughout this week and throughout next week, people will see a marked improvement in our state as more equipment come into the country and we are able to deploy the equipment accordingly,” he said.

“We are all living witnesses to the restructuring we are trying to do in the environmental sector. That restructuring culminated in the introduction of CLI, which is focused at ensuring that the way we clean Lagos is comparable to what is being done in first class cities in the world.”

“As a result, we are changing the way the environment in Lagos is being managed, and to help us to achieve that, this Sanitation Corps is important. More importantly now is to speak to the fact that yes, we are having some challenges in the area of waste management in Lagos today.”

“We all live in Lagos, but I want to reaffirm that we are doing everything to ensure that this becomes a thing of the past. Beyond the fact that we are clearing waste, the CLI is also ensuring that we have landfill sites; not dumping sites but landfill sites, where the waste generated in Lagos can be recycled and re-engineered and also resold so that we can create wealth and a new business for Lagosians to tap into.” He said.

Soldiers, Policemen, Among Groups Prone To HIV Infection – NACA

Featured Image

The National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA), a Federal Government’s agency saddled with the responsibility to monitor the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), has said that statistics showed that the police and the armed forces were among six groups with the highest risk of the virus.

This is contained in a statement issued by the NACA Director-General, Dr. Sani Aliyu, while delivering a lecture at the Ministry of Defence Health Implementation Programme in Abuja, the country’s capital.

The lecture titled: “HIV infection in Nigeria: Current trends, challenges and the way forward,” was initiated under a programme partly organised with the United States Department of Defence Walter Reed Programme Nigeria.

According to Aliyu, statistics also showed that 220,000 new cases of HIV infections were recorded nationwide in 2017.

He noted that according to the Integrated Biological and Behavioural Surveillance Survey, apart from the soldiers and policemen, other groups with high risks in the country were female sex workers, homosexuals, transport workers and drug addicts.

The NACA DG said, “Sub-Saharan Africa is the most severely affected with the HIV. Nearly one in every 25 adults lives with the virus.

“Also, Nigeria has the second largest HIV epidemic in the world. The factors include: inadequate knowledge of HIV transmission and prevention, low risk perception, low uptake of HIV testing services, multiple concurrent partnerships, ineffective and inefficient services for sexually transmitted infections.

“The six target groups mostly at risk of HIV/AIDS in Nigeria are female sex workers, men who have sex with men, people who inject drugs, transport workers, men of the armed forces and the police.

“The Federal Government’s fast track plan for HIV treatment was launched in 2016 and its aims is to place 500,000 more people on treatment within 18 months, test 3,000,000 more pregnant women for HIV and place 75,000 pregnant women with HIV on treatment for life, among others.”

MASSOB, IPOB Warn Herdsmen To Steer Off S’East, S’South – To Deploy 10,000 Men

In the wake of the ongoing killings and attacks by Fulani herdsmen in parts of the country, the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) and the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) have warned herdsmen to steer clear from the South-East and South-South states.

The pro-Biafra groups warned that they would be forced to resist the herdsmen should they fail to comply to their cautionary words.

Benue Crisis: “You Can’t Label Miyetti Allah As A Terrorist Organization” – Sultan

In separate statements made available to newsmen in reaction to the recent Benue killings on Thursday, both MASSOB and IPOB declared their resolve to ensure the protection of lives and properties of the people of the South-East and South-South geopolitical zones of the country.

The MASSOB leader, Chief Ralph Uwazuruike, told newsmen in Owerri that the movement would do all it can to protect the lives and properties of the people since the federal and state governments had shown their inability to protect the citizens from the previous herdsmen attacks.

Speaking via one of his deputies, Mr. Emmanuel Omenka, the MASSOB Leader said the group had finalised arrangements to deploy over 10,000 Biafran security operatives to secure the South- East against the ceaseless attacks by the Fulani herdsmen.

He said, “MASSOB is ready and would not fold its hands to see the Fulani herdsmen invade, attack and destroy lives and properties of the people in the South-East and other areas of Biafra.”

He, however, warned the Fulani herdsmen not to launch any attack, pointing out that the movement would not allow what happened in Enugu State in 2017 and what is happening in Benue State to repeat itself in the South- East and South-South.

In his own part, IPOB, through its Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, warned the Fulani herdsmen to stay away the South-East and avoid venturing into attacking industrious people of the region.

“Any attack on the South- East or Biafraland would be met with retaliations from IPOB. I therefore state that the reprisal would be better imagined than expressed,” he said.

Mourinho: Carrick Set For Retirement At End Of The Season

Featured Image

Manchester United manager, Jose Mourinho has revealed that midfield veteran, Michael Carrick is retiring at the end of the season and joining the coaching staff at the club.

The United man has not featured in the PL this season, forced to the sidelines after an irregular heart rhythm was discovered in the match against Burton Albion.

Mourinho believes Carrick still has a role to play at United and wants him on his coaching staff at the end of the season.

“I think to take the decision to stop playing football at the end of the season and not last week because of being injured with some problem is a good decision for the team and a good decision for him,” Mourinho told reporters Friday.

“So we are all happy and in the end of the season I expect him to join [the coaching staff], unless he changes his mind, but the club would be very happy for him to do that.

“I would be very happy also for him to do that. I think he will play again. After a few months without even training he is in his second week with the team. He can be a very important player for us.”
