BREAKING: Manchester United Sign Alexis Sanchez As Henrikh Mkhitaryan Heads To Arsenal

Featured Image

Manchester United on Monday confirmed the signing of Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal, with Henrikh Mkhitaryan heading in the opposite direction.

“I am thrilled to be joining the biggest club in the world,” said 29-year-old Chile international forward Sanchez.

“I have spent three-and-a-half wonderful years at Arsenal and I bring with me very positive memories of that great club and its fans.

“The chance to play in this historic stadium and to work with Jose Mourinho was something I could not turn down.

“I am very proud to be the first Chilean player ever to play for United’s first team and I hope I can show our fans all around the world why the club wanted to bring me here.”

Sanchez is expected to be the highest ever paid player in the Premier League, with British media reporting a pre-tax salary of £500,000 ($695,000, 567,000 euros) a week.

The swap deal that sees Armenia international winger Mkhitaryan, also 29, head to the Emirates following a mixed 18 months at Old Trafford had been expected for several days.

Sanchez had joined Arsenal in 2014 for £31.7 million after three years at Barcelona.

“Alexis is one of the best-attacking players in the world and he will complete our very young and talented group of attacking players,” said United manager Jose Mourinho.

“He will bring his ambition, drive and personality, qualities that make a Manchester United player and a player that makes the team stronger and the supporters proud of their club dimension and prestige.

“I would like to wish Henrikh all the success and happiness that I am sure he is going to get. He is a player that we will not forget, especially for his contribution to our Europa League victory.”

Arsenal have announced the signing of Henrikh Mkhitaryan in a swap deal with Manchester United for Alexis Sanchez.

“It’s a dream come true because I’ve always dreamed of playing for Arsenal. Now that I’m here, I’ll do my best for this club to create history.”

George Weah Takes Oath Of Office, Becomes Liberia’s 24th President

Featured Image

Football legend, George Weah, has been sworn in as the 24th President of the Republic of Liberia.

Weah took his oath of office at exactly noon inside the 35,000 capacity Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex in Monrovia.

At least eight African Heads of States, including President Muhammadu Buhari represented by Vice Present Yemi Osinbajo, and international soccer stars witnessed the ceremony.

The inauguration threw the people of Liberia into wild jubilation as the last peaceful transfer of power between two democratically elected presidents took place in Liberia in 1944, when President Edwin Barclay was replaced by William Tubman.

Weah replaces Africa’s first female head of state, economist and Nobel Peace Prize winner Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.

Meanwhile, the striker-turned politician has promised to eradicate corruption in the country of four million people and bolster the weak economy.

Monrovia, the capital of Liberia, is highly dependent on exports of iron ore and rubber, which have recently plunged in prices. The country is also trying to overcome the effects of the Ebola outbreak, which left more than 4,000 people dead.

Liberia is one of the poorest countries in the world with 80 percent of the population living on less than $1.25 a day.

Burna Boy Holds Private Listening Party For His Forthcoming Album ‘Outside’

Featured Image

Burna Boy thrilled a select few press and media, his close friends and family to an exclusive first listen of his forthcoming album “Outside” in a private listening party at WéRé House in Lekki, Lagos.

The album is set to be released on all digital music platforms on the 26th of January under Atlantic Records.

Douglas Jekan of The Beat FM was charged with the host’s duties as he led a cheerful Burna Boy through a series of questions about the album. Burna Boy said every song on the album was inspired by something in his life, revealing ‘Where I’m from’ as his favorite and most personal song. He explained how a trip to Port Harcourt led to ‘City Vibration’ and recounted his experience with Drake that led to ‘More Life’, the album’s opener.

In attendance was Burna Boy’s Grandfather, Benson Idonije, his mother and sister. Davido, Phyno, Skales, Idia Aisien, Nonso Bassey, Odunsi The Engine, Idyl, Leriq, DJ Lambo, Chopstix and DJ Spinall were some of the celebrities and influencers that showed up to support Burna Boy. There was food and drinks for everyone even as Burna Boy’s favorite meal, Port Harcourt’s Boli and fish, was served from the trunk of a Peugeot 504 that was beautifully converted to a kitchen. The car’s plate number was noteworthy as it was the plate number of Burna Boy’s first car when he returned to Nigeria.

At the end of the event, Burna Boy took time to take pictures and stayed till the last minute when he left with everyone. There were wide smiles as people departed; a testament of the music that Burna Boy created on the ‘Outside’ album. The album will be released on all digital music platforms on the 26th of January.

Nigeria “Successfully” Develops Drugs For Treatment Of Ebola, Malaria Other Diseases

Featured Image

The National Institute for Pharmaceutical Research and Development (NIPRD) has disclosed that it has successfully researched and developed six traditional herbal products for the treatment of Ebola, Malaria and other diseases.

This is contained in a press statement signed by the Special Assistant, Communication and Strategy to the Minister of Health, Kazeem Akintunde, on Sunday.

The statement quoted the NIPRD Director-General, Prof. Karniyus Gamaniel, as saying this while presenting the score card of his eight-year tenure (2009 to 2017) in Abuja on Friday.

The programme, organised by NIPRD, aimed to present the products researched and developed by the institute and present staff service awards to deserving worker.

He said that ‘NIPRIBOL’, a fixed dose combination drug was developed by the institute for the treatment of Ebola Virus Disease, adding that the institute had completed the Phase I study of the drug.

Gamaniel said that the institute had also developed ‘NIPRIMAL’, an anti-malaria for treatment of uncomplicated malaria, stating that the drug was also safe for use by pregnant women.

Others are: ‘NIPRIMUNE’ an immunostimulant which can also be used to manage HIV in Nigeria and ‘NIPRIFAN’ for the treatment of fungal skin infection.

He said that another product developed by the institute, ‘NIPRD Oil’, could be used as a nasal decongestant, insect repellant, air freshner and an anti-inflammatory agent.

He however noted that excessive use of this oil could cause irritation.

He said that “the institute has also developed ‘NIPRISAN’ for the management of sickle cell anaemia. We are currently concluding plans to carry out commercial production and distribution of this product.

“We have developed and implemented various institutional policies for effective governance, this include the scheme and condition of service, intellectual policy and quality management system.

“We have also ensured the introduction of traditional herbal medicine into the national health system and established partnerships with local and international organisations.

“The core competence of NIPRD is in the development of phytomedicines from indigenous plants and products, clinical trials, among others; we are a quality assured institute,” Gamaniel said.

Fayose Orders Fulani Herdsmen To Pay N5,000 To Operate In Ekiti Communities

Featured Image

Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State has issued a directive that for a Fulani herdsman to operate in Ekiti, he must pay the sum of N5,000 to the community where he is operating for identity and location.

He also told Serikin Fulani in the state, Muhammed Abashe, that he will be held responsible for any further attack in the state.

The governor made this known at separate peace meetings held on Friday and Saturday nights with Fulani herdsmen under the aegis of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, farmers, local hunters, security agencies and representatives of the Tiv community in Ado Ekiti.

He said, “If you (Fulani herders) still want to stay among us, you must accept the responsibility to ensure that none of our peoples’ farms is destroyed by herdsmen any longer.

“None of our people must be killed by your men, either they are strangers or those herdsmen living among us.

“If any killing or destruction of farms of our people occurs again in that area, I will ensure that I use the law to fight you their leader on it. This is the last warning I am giving you.”

The governor said the activities of the Fulani herders had continued to stain the names of President Muhammadu Buhari and other notable Fulani leaders in the country.

Henceforth, he said, Fulani herders must register with N5,000 in their host communities for identity and location.

Nigerians Cautioned To Adopt Safety Measures As South Africans Protest On Monday

Featured Image

The Nigerian Community in South Africa on Sunday urged its members to adopt safety measures ahead of a planned protest against foreigners by South Africans.

A leaflet circulated on Sunday tagged “ Mogale City Monday Shut Down” said that there would be a protest against crime, drugs and human trafficking in Krugersdorp on Monday.

The leaflet read “lets unite and reclaim our city from crime, drugs and human trafficking. Clean Krugersdorp, No one goes to work, No child goes to school, No transport allowed to move,”.

Mr Adetola Olubajo, the President of Nigerian Union, South Africa, disclosed on the telephone from Pretoria, that criminal elements could take advantage of the protest to cause trouble.

“We call on our people to stay away from the areas as criminal elements within the community will take advantage of the protest.

“We implore the organisers of the planned protest to do it within the ambit of the law and be very vigilant of criminal elements that may take advantage of the march to loot, destroy property and shops of foreigners,” he said.

Olubajo said that the union had zero tolerance for crime because it affects everybody in the society.

“Those engaging in drug peddling and child prostitution, and those attacking foreign nationals and looting their property are all perpetrating crime,” he said.

The president urged the police to be proactive adding that prompt response would assist the people.

“The host government at the highest level should swiftly intervene to avoid further loss of lives and property,” Olubajo said.

NAN reported on Friday that a 27-year old Nigerian Ebuka Okori was killed by South African policemen in Durban.

Long Queues Return To Lagos As NNPC Intervenes With 250 Fuel-Laden Trucks

Featured Image

The Long queues which rocked filling stations across the country a few weeks ago came alive in Lagos and Ogun states on Saturday and Sunday as desperate motorists and other users of Premium Motor Spirit queued up in droves for the product.

It is understood that quite a number of the petrol stations in the two states were shut on Sunday, while some of the ones that dispensed the product sold above the official pump price of N145 per litre.

Black market operators had a field day as they sold the product for as much as N250 per litre on Sunday, while some filling stations in Ikotun, Ejigbo, Isolo, Idimu, and Igando areas of Lagos, and Akute in Lagos, were selling at between N160 and N180 per litre.

Speaking with newsmen on the development, the Executive Secretary, Depot and Petroleum Products Marketers Association, Mr. Olufemi Adewole, blamed it on insufficient supply of fuel.

He stated, “Definitely, if marketers have fuel, there won’t be queues. It simply means there is insufficient supply, and the NNPC still remains the supplier of last resort. So whatever they give to marketers, that is what marketers will dispense to the public.

“If you go to some DAPPMA stations now, you will see the tankers of major marketers dispensing there because the NNPC has not given us enough products for the last 10 days. Many of our people did not get products, and in order to keep their stations busy, they resorted to buying from MOMAN (Major Oil Marketers Association of Nigeria) members.”

  • NNPC Intervenes

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) on Sunday said that it had released 250 trucks of petrol to Lagos metropolis for effective dispensing at filling stations to forestall any scarcity.

Mr Ndu Ughamadu, the corporation’s Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division, disclosed this in Lagos.

According to him, there has been a slight change in the distribution network in Lagos, as Lagos is currently being supplied by members of the Major Oil Marketers Association of Nigeria (MOMAN).

“At the weekend there was a hitch in discharging of petrol by ships which have been ratified.

“Today, 250 trucks have been discharged to Lagos compared to less than 200 trucks usually allocated to Lagos at the weekend,” he said.

Suspected Herdsmen Reportedly Set Olu Falae’s Farm On Fire

Featured Image

Some men suspected to be Fulani herdsmen on Sunday evening reportedly raided a farm belonging to the former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Chief Olu Falae, setting it on fire.

The farm, it was gathered, is located at Ilado Community in Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State.

Sources told newsmen that the hoodlums did not steal anything on the farm but they burnt down five hectares of the farm which was the oil palm plantation.

Confirming the incident when speaking to The Punch, the Chief Security Officer (CSO) to the former SGF, Captain Moshood Raji said he (Raji) was called by a policeman that was guiding the farm.

He said the incident happened around 6pm.

Raji said, “At about 6pm, I got a message from one of the police officers attached to the farm that the farm has been burnt down by some hoodlums.

“There was no worker on the farm when the incident occurred because it was a Sunday.

“We are on our way to the farm now to know the extent of the damage.

“We have informed the Commissioner of Police. About five hectares of the land were affected.

“The oil palm plantation was affected as well as some parts of the yam and cassava plantations.”

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mr. Femi Joseph, said he was not aware of the incident.

“I am not aware of it as at now. The matter has not got to my table as I’m talking to you,” Joseph said.

In his reaction, Chief Falae said the herdsmen were deliberately attacking his farm for no reason, describing the act as malicious and wicked.

He said this was the third time they would be attacking his farm, saying they also did it in January 2017.

He said, “I don’t know why the herdsmen were attacking my farm; they did it last year, they did the same year before the last.

“That is how they burn it every year so that fresh grass can come out for their cattle to eat.

“They attack my oil palm cultivation; the mature oil palm trees that have been bearing fruits to make palm oil have been burnt down.

“This is a wicked act and malicious damage. This goes beyond what their cattle want to eat.

“Cattle don’t eat oil palm. This is a malicious attack.”
