Presidency Keeps Mum As Obasanjo Rejects Buhari’s 2019 Bid

Featured Image

The Presidency has kept mum after a statement released to the public on Tuesday by a former president of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, in which he urged President Muhammadu Buhari not to run for re-election in 2019.

Obasanjo’s 13-page special statement, which can be categorised as a letter, criticised the administration of President Buhari as it also revealed many societal and political issues in the country.

READ OBASANJO’s FULL STATEMENT HERE

In the special press statement titled “The Wat Out: A Clarion Call for Coalition for Nigeria Movement”, Obasanjo said President Buhari has performed well below expectation and should honorably “dismount from the horse” to join the group of the country’s former leaders whose “experience, influence, wisdom and outreach can be deployed on the side line for the good of the country.”

Mr. Obasanjo also dismissed the ruling All Progressive Congress and the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party as lacking the ingredient to salvage the country.

He called for a another political movement, which he christened Coalition for Nigeria, to oust the present political class and save the country from an impending doom.

However, when contacted for comments, Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to Mr Buhari, declined to react to the statement.

He said ‘We won’t comment now’.

Shehu, however, said we will inform the media if we decided to react.

Turning General Buhari’s 2015 Questions Back At Femi Adesina

Turning General Buhari’s 2015 Questions Back at Femi Adesina, By Ahmed Oluwasanjo

CLICK here to read more opinion articles

“…Can you honestly, truly say to yourself that our country has changed for the better? (sic) Are our children safe when they go to school? Are our parents safe when we leave them at home?…” – General Muhammadu Buhari

The above three critical questions were raised by General Muhammadu Buhari in a video widely circulated on social media in the run up to 2015 presidential election.

This piece was written by Ahmed Oluwasanjo. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

The obvious answer to these questions then was: NO. The reason being that insecurity in the country took a frightening trajectory at that point, and the government of former President Goodluck Jonathan appeared to be too weak, confused and incompetent to curtail the Boko Haram insurgents.

Fast forward to 2018, and in spite of the laudable gains of the Buhari-led government in the war against Boko Haram insurgents in North-East, the same questions Buhari raised on insecurity in 2015 are back to haunt him as killer herdsmen continue to wreck serious havoc across the country.

Compiling a dossier on the number of persons killed and properties destroyed in the coordinated attacks of herdsmen across the country right under Buhari’s watch would humble the proudest of Buhari’s supporter. And to say that Buhari’s government has woefully failed to appropriately answer the same questions he raised in 2015 is no exaggeration.

Passing the buck or claiming that herdsmen menace predated Buhari’s administration, like Mr. Femi Adesina, the special adviser to the president on media and publicity, unfortunately did in a video he recently shared on Facebook, is not only infantile but wicked.

As a matter of fact, Boko Haram insurgency predated the Goodluck Jonathan administration. Nigerians, however, did not accept that as an excuse to justify Jonathan’s dismal performance with regard to insecurity in the country under his watch.

Before being invited to the suya table in Aso Rock, Mr. Adesina wrote, criticising Jonathan’s administration for failing to tackle insecurity in the country, not minding that Jonathan inherited the same problem.

Moreover, one is obliged to wonder why Mr. Adesina who once lamented how “human beings were killed like chicken” in Nigeria in one of his article titled, “This country does not give a damn”, could be so “unkind” and insensitive to moot such an infantile debate when the families of those killed by herdsmen in Benue State during the new year were still mourning their dead.

What is wrong with Mr. Adesina, a supposed gentleman I have had so much respect for?! Would he countenance the same view if Peter Aboh, the 28 year old final year student of Microbiology at the Federal University, Lafia, Nasarrawa State, who was slain by herdsmen, were his son? This is not wishing Mr. Adesina and his family evil, anyway.

However, if Mr. Adesina could boastfully argue that President Buhari has “technically” defeated Boko Haram, an insurgent group that predated the Buhari presidency, why does he wants us to see the herdsmen menace as a problem we must endure because it has been with us since the day Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit?

Dear Mr. Adesina, get it right that: President Buhari was very much aware of the various security issues in the country before he begged Nigerians to give him a chance to turn things around – for good. He was not elected to watch herdsmen morph into an insurgent group deadlier than Boko Haram. Or to supervise their slaughter of Nigerians like chicken on a daily basis.

Violent killings in Benue State or any where in Nigeria under Buhari’s watch should not be equal to or outnumber the killings under his predecessor, before Buhari is called to rise up to perform the primary duty of the protection of life and property that he swore to perform as Nigeria’s commander-in-chief.

We all saw how the Buhari-led government descended heavily on the hot-headed Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB) rabble and swiftly declared them a terrorist group. We heard Buhari avow to deal with Niger Delta militants like Boko Haram. And to imagine that the same Buhari has failed to act decisively on the killer herdsmen who kept news headlines in blood, vividly reveal his biased and “inhuman” side.

If Mr. Adesina cannot understand why Buhari’s long silence on the herdsmen menace has frustrated many Nigerians to accuse him of tacitly siding with the killer herdsmen, then it is OK to believe that the “demons in Aso Rock” also rob people of their common sense.

Nigerians understand that Mr. Adesina is employed and paid to run a fool’s errand for Buhari. That, notwithstanding, he does not have to trivialise the reckless killings in Benue State and other parts of the country by comparing them to what used to be under an administration Nigerians voted out to elect his principal, on the platform of a hope for better tidings.

Responding to the herdsmen menace in the country goes beyond glib talk and empty promises in preparation for the 2019 presidential election. Buhari must face the killer herdsmen squarely, like he has done to Boko Haram, to tell Nigerians that he does not actually belong to the killer herdsmen.

Sanchez: I Needed To Feel Wanted

Featured Image

Manchester United’s new arrival, Alexis Sanchez says a need to feel wanted and loved prompted his Arsenal exit.

The Chile international forward completed his move to United, saying interest from Mourinho made him feel wanted, with Mkhitaryan moving to Arsenal.

Sanchez took to his Instagram’s account to hit out at Arsenal legends that criticized him.

“He indicated it is important for the club for me to be here,” Sanchez told MUTV. “I also believe that the club itself cared about me joining, and I got the impression that they were keen for me to come here and wear the number seven shirt.

“I think that also gets through to the player. Players sometimes need to feel important and loved by the club. That was one of the things that attracted me to come here, along with the manager, who is a person who won everything in Italy, the same as he did in Spain, and he’s a manager who likes to win.”

“When they told me that Cristiano [Ronaldo], [Eric] Cantona, David Beckham had all worn it, just thinking about that number seven sets you off dreaming in your head with ideas about lifting the Champions League trophy and winning the Premier League title,” he continued.

“So yes, I’m fulfilling a dream and I hope to give my very best and win many trophies at this club.”

Police Arrest, Detain Former Minister, Oby Ezekwesili

Featured Image

A former minister and convener of the BringBackOurGirls group, Oby Ezekwesili, was earlier today arrested and she’s being detained by the police in Abuja.

It is understood that her arrest is not unconnected to the activities of the group.

In a flurry of tweets on her Twitter handle, @obyezeks, the former Minister of Education, said she was arrested alongside some members of the BBOG group.

According to her, Aisha Yesufu, Ms Maureen Kabrik, Jeff Okoroafor and four others were also arrested.

Reacting to the reported arrest, the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), in a statement via its Twitter page, demanded the immediate release of those arrested.

SERAP tweeted, “The reported false imprisonment & detention of @obyezeks & members of @BBOG_Nigeria makes a mockery of @MBuhari’s claim that this govt is one of change that is governed by d rule of law. The authorities should immediately release them & allow them to freely exercise their rights.”

  • How I was imprisoned in broad daylight – Ezekwesili

In an interview with newsmen, Ezekwesili narrated what led to the arrest and called on President Muhammadu Buhari to order the release of all the members of the group.

“Today we gathered to do our usual march, and the Nigerian police refused for us to leave the Unity Fountain (in Abuja),” she said.

“Some of our colleagues have already gone and they are going to be giving their press statement there.

“Those of us that they have locked in here, in particular, they have refused that I should move.

“They have built a human prison and have violated my fundamental right to freedom of movement and association and therefore I want it to be on record that the government of President Muhammadu Buhari has infringed the constitution by violating my fundamental right to freedom of movement and association and this cannot be allowed to happen in a democracy.

“If there is anyone there listening to this, they must tell President Muhammadu Buhari to instruct the IG of Nigerian police to let the officers who have imprisoned me in broad daylight, to let me go about my business.

“I am a law-abiding citizen of this country. I see no reason why my right should be violated. And so right now I will continue to insist that these officers allow me to move out of the Unity Fountain.”

Former President Obasanjo Asks President Buhari Not To Run In 2019

Featured Image

On Tuesday, former President Olusegun Obasanjo released a 13-page statement in which he called on President Muhammadu Buhari to not seek re-election in 2019.

The former President said that he feels disappointed by Buhari, whom he supported during the 2015 election over then incumbent and candidate of his former party, Goodluck Jonathan. Back in 2013, Mr Obasanjo had released an open letter titled “Before It Is Too Late” in which he spoke on the failings of the Jonathan administration. He argued that his decision to go against President Jonathan, at the time was the right one and was for the good of the nation and nothing personal.

“Even the horse rider then, with whom I maintain very cordial, happy and social relationship today has come to realise his mistakes and regretted it publicly and I admire his courage and forthrightness in this regard,” Obasanjo said.

“He has a role to play on the side line for the good of Nigeria, Africa and humanity and I will see him as a partner in playing such a role nationally and internationally, but not as a horse rider in Nigeria again.”

Obasanjo thanked the sitting President for the effort of his administration in fighting the Boko Haram insurgency and his fight against corruption, but he maintained that President Buhari has ultimately failed in other areas where he had thought he would be efficient. He admitted he knew Mr Buhari was weak in handling the economy, but he went ahead and voted for him because at the time “it was a matter of ‘any option but Jonathan’” and because he believed Buhari would appoint qualified Nigerians to help out in that area.

Speaking on the clashes between the herdsmen and farmers, Obasanjo berated President Buhari for allowing situation to get messy and added that the endorsement of the President by some governors to seek re-election barely 24 hours after 73 people who were killed by herdsmen in Benue State were given mass burial was “a sad symptom of insensitivity and callousness.”

The former President was excoriating on what he described as Mr Buhari’s clannishness, lack of understanding of the dynamics of politics, and his tendencies to pass the buck of his government’s inadequacies to the immediate past administration.

“But there are three other areas where President Buhari has come out more glaringly than most of us thought we knew about him.  One is nepotic deployment bordering on clannishness and inability to bring discipline to bear on errant members of his nepotic court.  This has grave consequences on performance of his government to the detriment of the nation.  It would appear that national interest was being sacrificed on the altar of nepotic interest.  What does one make of a case like that of Maina: collusion, condonation, ineptitude, incompetence, dereliction of responsibility or kinship and friendship on the part of those who should have taken visible and deterrent disciplinary action?  How many similar cases are buried, ignored or covered up and not yet in the glare of the media and the public?

“The second is his poor understanding of the dynamics of internal politics.  This has led to wittingly or unwittingly making the nation more divided and inequality has widened and become more pronounced.  It also has effect on general national security.

“The third is passing the buck.  For instance, blaming the Governor of the Central Bank for devaluation of the naira by 70% or so and blaming past governments for it, is to say the least, not accepting one’s own responsibility.  Let nobody deceive us, economy feeds on politics and because our politics is depressing, our economy is even more depressing today.  If things were good, President Buhari would not need to come in.  He was voted to fix things that were bad and not engage in the blame game.”

Mr Obasanjo wrote that neither President Buhari nor his party, the All Progressive Congress hold the solution to the country’s problems adding that Buhari was also not healthy enough to withstand the rigour of running a country like Nigeria. He called on the President to step down at the end of his first term with honour and dignity and attend to his health and shouldn’t listen to his “self-serving so-called advisers who would claim that they love him more than God loves him and that without him, there would be no Nigeria”

“President Buhari needs a dignified and honorable dismount from the horse. He needs to have time to reflect, refurbish physically and recoup and after appropriate rest, once again, join the stock of Nigerian leaders whose experience, influence, wisdom and outreach can be deployed on the side line for the good of the country.  His place in history is already assured.  Without impaired health and strain of age, running the affairs of Nigeria is a 25/7 affair, not 24/7″ He added.

“I only appeal to brother Buhari to consider a deserved rest at this point in time and at this age.  I continue to wish him robust health to enjoy his retirement from active public service.  President Buhari does not necessarily need to heed my advice.  But whether or not he heeds it, Nigeria needs to move on and move forward,”

“I have had occasion in the past to say that the two main political parties – APC and PDP – were wobbling.  I must reiterate that nothing has happened to convince me otherwise.  If anything, I am reinforced in my conviction.  The recent show of PDP must give grave and great concern to lovers of Nigeria.”

“To claim, as has been credited to the chief kingmaker of PDP, that for procuring the Supreme Court judgement for his faction of the Party, he must dictate the tune all the way and this is indeed fraught with danger.

“If neither APC nor PDP is a worthy horse to ride to lead Nigeria at this crucial and critical time, what then do we do?  Remember Farooq Kperogi, an Associate Professor at the Kennesaw State University, Georgia, United States, calls it “a cruel Hobson’s choice; it’s like a choice between six and half a dozen, between evil and evil. Any selection or deflection would be a distinction without a difference. We cannot just sit down lamenting and wringing our hands desperately and hopelessly.”

Ruling out the PDP and the APC of being able to save the country, the former President called for a movement he termed Coalition of Nigeria, which he offered to be a part of, to wrest power from the present ruling class and lead the country into the path of rebirth.

“We can collectively save ourselves from the position we find ourselves.  It will not come through self-pity, fruitless complaint or protest but through constructive and positive engagement and collective action for the good of our nation and ourselves and our children and their children. We need moral re-armament and engaging togetherness of people of like-mind and goodwill to come solidly together to lift Nigeria up.  This is no time for trading blames or embarking on futile argument and neither should we accept untenable excuses for non-performance.”

“Let us accept that the present administration has done what it can do to the limit of its ability, aptitude and understanding. Let the administration and its political party platform agree with the rest of us that what they have done and what they are capable of doing is not good enough for us.  They have given as best as they have and as best as they can give.  Nigeria deserves and urgently needs better than what they have given or what we know they are capable of giving.  To ask them to give more will be unrealistic and will only sentence Nigeria to a prison term of four years if not destroy it beyond the possibility of an early recovery and substantial growth.”

“The development and modernization of our country and society must be anchored and sustained on dynamic Nigerian culture, enduring values and an enchanting Nigerian dream.  We must have abiding faith in our country and its role and place within the comity of nations.  Today, Nigeria needs all hands on deck.  All hands of men and women of goodwill must be on deck.  We need all hands to move our country forward.”

“We need a Coalition for Nigeria, CN. Such a Movement at this juncture needs not be a political party but one to which all well-meaning Nigerians can belong.  That Movement must be a coalition for democracy, good governance, social and economic well-being and progress.  Coalition to salvage and redeem our country.  You can count me with such a Movement.  Last time, we asked, prayed and worked for change and God granted our request.  This time, we must ask, pray and work for change with unity, security and progress. And God will again grant us.  Of course, nothing should stop such a Movement from satisfying conditions for fielding candidates for elections.  But if at any stage the Movement wishes to metamorphose into candidate-sponsoring Movement for elections, I will bow out of the Movement because I will continue to maintain my non-partisan position.  Coalition for Nigeria must have its headquarters in Abuja.”

“This Coalition for Nigeria will be a Movement that will drive Nigeria up and forward.  It must have a pride of place for all Nigerians, particularly for our youth and our women.  It is a coalition of hope for all Nigerians for speedy, quality and equal development, security, unity, prosperity and progress.  It is a coalition to banish poverty, insecurity and despair.  Our country must not be oblivious to concomitant danger around, outside and ahead.  Coalition for Nigeria must be a Movement to break new ground in building a united country, a socially-cohesive and moderately prosperous society with equity, equality of opportunity, justice and a dynamic and progressive economy that is self-reliant and takes active part in global division of labor and international decision-making.”

“The Movement must work out the path of development and the trajectory of development in speed, quality and equality in the short- medium- and long-term for Nigeria on the basis of sustainability, stability, predictability, credibility, security, cooperation and prosperity with diminishing inequality.  What is called for is love, commitment and interest in our country, not in self, friends and kinship alone but particularly love, compassion and interest in the poor, underprivileged and downtrodden.  It is our human duty and responsibility so to do.  Failure to do this will amount to a sin against God and a crime against humanity.”

FG Uncovers Islamic State Terrorists In Nigeria

Featured Image

The federal government has uncovered the Islamic State in West Africa (ISWA) fighters in North Central and South South Nigeria.

This disclosure was made in a report presented to President Muhammadu Buhari and was part of the result of findings by security operatives, including the Department of State Services (DSS).

A presidency source, at the weekend, said the discovery of the ISWA network followed the arrest of suspected attackers consisting of Fulani herdsmen, government-sponsored militias, militants and other miscreants in Benue State.

The source noted that many of the persons in custody spoke only the French language, unable to communicate in any of the Nigerian dialects.

The source said: “This is the first time that security officials have confirmed that the Islamic State in West Africa members are operating as a unit in Nigeria and the level of their penetration of the country.”

“A good number”of the Islamic State terrorists have been arrested not only in the Benue valley but significantly in several towns in Edo State, specifically in Akoko-Edo, Okpella and Benin as well as in Okene, in Kogi state.”

“It is understood that the cell which has members in different parts of the country concentrates on recruiting young men to fight for the Islamic State in West Africa by unleashing the cold-blooded murder of innocent citizens.”

“There was intelligence that they had planned several attacks here, before and during Christmas and the New Year. Their bombing targets included fuel depots, foreign missions and police and military establishments.”

“Their network is very wide. But so much was achieved by the DSS which had made a significant number of arrests in the last two months that helped to preempt those attacks. This helped to save Nigeria from the spate of major terrorist attacks witnessed elsewhere that were syndicated by ISIS worldwide.”

The source added that reports submitted to the Presidency, also revealed that security officials now fear an influx of other ISIS members into many parts of the country.

“We are learning more and more about this complex and sophisticated network. This is the main reason why the secret service is not parading those suspects so far arrested. It has become clear to us by now, that the challenge facing this country is a serious one.”

2019 Election: Igbo Leaders Endorse Buhari For Second Term

Featured Image

With barely a year to the 2019 presidential election, the Leaders of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in the South-East have endorsed President Muhammadu Buhari for a second term.

The group met with the President at the Presidential Villa where its leader, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu, the Minister of Science and Technology, said the group also re-assured Buhari that the party was working very hard to win elections in the PDP-dominated South East.

Briefing State House Correspondents, Onu said that the delegation to the Presidency was high-power and the President was very happy about the visit.

The delegation comprised Rochas Okorocha, governor of Imo state who was represented by Eze Madumere, his deputy, serving members of the national assembly, former governors, all the ministers from the south-east, members of the national working committee and national executive committee of the APC.

“The APC leadership in the south-east met on December 31 last year and endorsed the president for a second term,” he said.

“We have come today to reaffirm that and to assure Mr. President that the party is working very hard to win future elections.”

The minister said Buhari was very happy with the calibre of people that were in the delegation.

“He was very happy because you can see the caliber of people in this delegation, a very high-powered delegation,” he said.

“The president was very happy that such a delegation thought it fit to visit him.”

The Minister added that the delegation also talked about the needs of the zone after commending the President on what efforts he was making to ensure that infrastructure development in the South East was improved.

He noted that the major roads that traverse the region from Enugu to Port Harcourt and Enugu/Onitsha to Owerri as ones that the administration had worked very hard to rehabilitate.

He recalled that in the past it used to be promises on the roads but the present administration had shown action adding that same was for the second Niger Bridge.

He added that the Bridge was not just for the South East but for the whole country.

“We then thanked him that the people of the South East are very enterprising people; when you are building a railway network it is important that major commercial towns are linked up by rail and also gas distribution.

And the President gave direct instructions that this should be done and we are very happy.

“It is not just good for the south East, it is good for the nation,’’ Onu stated.
