Obasanjo Breaks Silence – My Letter To Buhari Not Borne Out Of ‘Bad Belle’

Featured Image

An erstwhile President of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, has broken the silence on his recent open letter to President Muhammadu Buhari, saying that his statement was not borne out of malice or ‘bad belle’ but out of his deep concern for the situation in the country.

The ex-president said this on Thursday at the secretariat of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Oke Ilewo area of Abeokuta, shortly after the Coalition for Nigeria Movement was inaugurated in Ogun State, and he was registered as a member of the movement, after formally filling the registration form.

His statement is coming on the back of the reactions and backlashes that greeted his meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari during the African Union (AU) summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where he also took group photograph with him.

The former president while addressing scores of potential members who had gathered at the venue, said he was surprised that many Nigerians were worried that he had exchange pleasantries with President Buhari at the African Unity summit at Addis Ababa, capital of Ethiopia, few days after he wrote the open letter to him (Buhari).

He said, “Last week, I issued a statement which I did not do lightly or frivolously but out of deep concern for the situation of our country.

“I wonder why some Nigerians were worried why I had to pay respect to the Nigerian President at Addis Ababa. That’s my own upbringing as a well-born and bred Yoruba boy.

“That doesn’t mean that what I have said about the President, which I did not say out of bitterness and hatred.  It is evidence that the President has performed, in some areas, good enough.

”In other areas not good and a proper advice which he may take and he may not take.

“I didn’t do that out of malice or out of ‘bad belle’; I did it out of my respect for that office and my interest and I hope in your interest and the interest of Buhari in Nigeria.”

He, however, assured that the CNM is not like every other movement in town, saying the one being championed today (Thursday) is a big masquerade and urged Nigerians to join.

He added:  “There are other movements but we, as far as I know, have no direct or indirect relationship with any other movements.  We do not.

“But as I said, if there are people of like minds, people who shared the view and the aims and objectives of Coalition for Nigeria Movement who want their members to join this movement, we will not object.  We will welcome them.

“But to the best of my knowledge, this is a movement that has no relationship with any other movement that I know of.

“This is the new message in town, the new dance in town, the ceremony in town and I will appeal to you to join this ceremony and dance in town because there may be many masquerades.

“And those of you who had my own type of background, when we were growing up, we were playing masquerades too. But those were small masquerades, but when big masquerades come out, the small masquerade must come out. I appeal to you to join the ceremony, the dance and the message.”

Senate Celebrates As Court Affirms Power To Reject Magu As EFCC Chairman

Featured Image

The Senate was on Thursday pleased with a court ruling that affirmed its decision to reject Ibrahim Magu as the chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Mr. Magu was nominated by President Muhammadu Buhari on two occasions, yet on that two occasions he was rejected by the upper chamber of the National Assembly.

In its ruling on Thursday, a Federal High Court in Abuja held that the Senate acted within the law when it rejected the nomination of Magu as chairman of the anti-graft agency.

According to the judge, JT Tsoho, the senate is not a rubber stamp body and was only acting in compliance with the EFCC law when it screened and rejected Magu.

He added that the Senate is conferred with the authority to ensure the choice of “only suitable and credible persons for appointment to the office”.

The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Senator Aliyu Sabi-Abdullahi, who briefed journalists in Abuja after the ruling, made a copy of the ruling available to journalists.

The Senate’s spokesperson said, “We are pleased with this judgment and we want to salute Nigeria’s judiciary for always rising up to the occasion to protect our democracy and deepen our democratic processes.”

The lawmakers, while rejecting Magu, had also placed an embargo on confirmation of appointments made by President Muhammadu Buhari which required legislative approval, to protest against Presidency’s position that some appointments did not require Senate’s approval.

Sabi-Abdullahi stated that the embargo would remain until Magu is replaced.

The suit, with Number FHC/ABJ/CS/59/2017, was filed by a lawyer, Oluwatosin Ojaomo, against the Senate President, Bukola Saraki; and the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN.

Justice John Tsoho of the FHC sitting in Abuja on January 15, 2018, ruled on the issues raised by the plaintiff before striking out the suit.

Delivering the ruling, Tsoho said, “The plaintiff raised two issues in the written address for determination, to wit: Whether or not the 1st defendant (Saraki) can reject a valid statutory appointment made by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to the Office (of the Chairman) of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission in accordance with the provisions of the EFCC (Establishment) Act, 2004.

“Whether or not the 1st defendant is bound by the provisions of the EFCC Act, 2004, with respect to the confirmation of any appointment made by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to the Office of the Chairman of the EFCC.”

2018 Access Bank Lagos Marathon: First Nigerian To Win Gets N3M | LASTMA Announces Traffic Diversion | Kits Distribution Starts Today, February 1, 2018

In a bid to encourage Nigerians who will participate in the 42.195km Access Bank’s Lagos marathon race billed for February 10, the management of the marathon has announced that the first Nigerian to emerge winner will get a whooping sum of N3million.

2018 Access Bank Lagos MarathonThe General Manager of the marathon, Mr Yusuf Alli, made this known on Wednesday, January 31, during an exclusive chat with Daily Trust.

While explaining that the first ten marathon winners will win a total of $208,000, Alli further disclosed that the first winner of the full marathon will be rewarded with $50,000, while the second winner and third are to receive $40,000 and $30,000 respectively.

He further said that the remaining seven winners out of the first top ten will take home $25,000, $20,000, $15,000, $10,000, $8,000, $6,000 and $4,000 accordingly.

His words: “So, if a Nigerian man wins the full marathon before anyone else, he will get the $50,000 plus the N3m”

“This year’s winner could be a Kenyan, Uganda, Ethiopian, or a Nigerian; we don’t even know. But it’s going to be very difficult for a Nigerian to run that fast and far. Our best marathon record is about 2hrs 15mins as far back as 1984 by Abass Muhammad. If we had improved on that, maybe by now we would be doing better. But Nigeria as a whole went to sleep; hopefully we will get back the glory.”

“The more a Nigerian runs for the marathon, trains and jogs everyday, the better for us. If we can imbibe the culture of running, keeping fit, I think maybe one day we will win. For me to think a Nigerian will win this year, it will be very hard, but it is not impossible.”

“In Nigeria, people like to do their things at the last minute. We know many won’t return theirs until a day or two before the race. We know that and we will accommodate it.”

“Make sure you are fit and ready, if you have any medical condition, see the doctor to confirm if you can run or not. We have water along the road as well as energy drinks, doctors, referees. If the referee feels the person is tired, he will ask such person to take a break. Before you pick up your running number, we are going to check your medical condition to know how fit you are. Every participant must know his or her health; if you cannot reach the finishing point, don’t worry, you can always try another time. It’s not a must for everyone to win.”

Lekki Toll Hike: NURTW Assures Commuters That It Won’t Increase Transport Fares

Featured Image

Despite the upward toll review by Lekki Concession Company (LCC), the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) has assured commuters that it would not increase transport fare.

The Chairman, NURTW, in Jakande, Eti-Osa Local Government Area of Lagos State, Alhaji Taofeek Oluwa, gave the assurance on Wednesday in Lagos state.

Motorists Plying Lekki Toll Gate, Ikoyi Link Bridge Will Pay More From February 1

The LCC had recently announced its plan to review to upward the tolls for different categories of motorists plying Eti-Osa-Lekki-Epe Expressway with effect from February 1.

However, Oluwa said that the development would not affect transport fares in the corridor.

“Following the announcement of the toll review at the Admiralty Circle Plaza and the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge Plaza by the Lekki Concession Company, LCC, there will be no fare increase,’’ he said.

The NURTW chief said that the union was duly carried along by LCC, as one of the critical stakeholders during the engagement process for the toll review.

“It is encouraging that LCC carried the union along as one of the critical stakeholders consulted during the engagement process for the toll review which resulted in the minimal increase in tariff charged the branded commercial buses.

“From Feb.1, branded commercial buses popularly called “Danfo’’ which previously paid N80.00 would be paying N90 (Ninety Naira) for e-Tag payments and N100 (One Hundred) for cash payments.

“As long as LCC honours its agreement of our mutual understanding at the stakeholders’ meeting, we can confidently support LCC.

“We assure the commuters that they will not suffer any increase in the fare paid to board the branded commercial buses coming into or going out of Eti-Osa/Lekki-Epe Expressway.

“The NURTW is happy to endorse the toll fare review,” Oluwa said.

Ortom Imposes Dusk-To-Dawn Curfew On Gboko Town, Benue Over Killing Of 7

Featured Image

Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State has approved the imposition of a dusk-to-dawn curfew on Gboko town from yesterday, January 31, 2018, until further notice.

The curfew, which is aimed to stop further killings in the area, is coming on the back of the recent killing of seven persons in the area.

A statement signed on Wednesday by the Special Adviser to the governor on Media and ICT, Tahav Agerzua, said the curfew, which will last from 6 pm to 6 am every day, was a result of security threats in the area.

The statement read: “The curfew which will last from 6 pm to 6 am every day is as a result of security threats in the area.”

“Those exempted from the curfew are those on essential services such as hospital staff and others who show convincing identification.

“He has directed security agencies particularly the police and the army to provide round the clock surveillance in the town so as to forestall a breach of the peace.

“The Governor has appealed to residents of Gboko to comply with the curfew in their own interest as security operatives have been directed to arrest those found moving about in the town during the period of the curfew.”

He also lamented that President Muhammadu Buhari has not done enough to stop the killings in the state.

In his reaction to the President’s letter to the Senate, to the effect that he had taken measures to stop  killings in the state, the state government said:

“You and I know that the killings are still continuing. Though the President has drafted the IGP to Benue State to stop the killings, that is certainly not enough. The killings are still going on.

“We cannot say he had done enough because he had notice of these killings a long time ago when these people held a press conference and threatened to invade the state; the governor wrote to him severally.

“Our tribal leaders also raised alarm and made appeals and also wrote an open letter to the President over the matter before the new year day killings.

“He has not done enough, though the killings have reduced but he has certainly not done enough.”

Femi Fani-Kayode Rubbishes Heart Disease Reports

Featured Image

The former Minister of Aviation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode in a press release has rubbished reports that surfaced claiming he was suffering from an undisclosed heart disease.

The press statement signed by Obiageli Nwachukwu, the S.S.A. Public Affairs to the former Minister reads

“It has been brought to our attention that the Punch Newspaper of 31st January 2018 has reported, in a blazing and sensational headline, that the former Minister of Aviation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, “has heart disease”. This is false.

Worst still the story has brought a lot of fear and consternation into the hearts and minds of Chief Fani-Kayode’s friends, supporters and family members all over the world.

It is only in the world of the reporter of the Punch Newspaper that a “heart-related ailment” has suddenly become “heart disease”.

Chief Fani-Kayode’s lawyer, Mr. Norrison Quakers SAN, said that he had a “heart-related ailment” in open court and not “heart disease”. There is a world of difference between the two. He also said that he will be presenting a medical report to the court at a later date.

For the Punch Newspaper to misrepresent what was said in court is unprofessional and unexpected of a newspaper of such high calibre and repute and which we ordinarily hold in high esteem.

Secondly it is not true that Chief Fani-Kayode had asked the court and got two previous adjournments in this case. The court records are there for all to see.

Today was the first and only time that Chief Fani-Kayode has EVER been absent from the proceedings at the Federal High Court in Lagos or asked for an adjournment from this particular learned judge.

He looks forward to being in court at the adjourned date and he fully appreciates the fact that the EFCC did not oppose the application for adjournment and that the learned trial judge granted it expeditiously.

We feel it is important to make these clarifications for record purposes”.

Third Force: Obasanjo’s Coalition For Nigeria Movement (CNM) Unveiled in Abuja

Featured Image

Scores of people on Wednesday trooped to the Yar Adua Centre in Abuja, for the official launch of what was supposed to be former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s ‘Coalition for Nigeria Movement’, known also as the Third Force.

The event, which held at Musa Yar’adua Center, was attended by young Nigerians from all walks of life.

The former Governor of Osun State, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, who formally launched the Coalition for Nigeria Movement (CNM) on Wednesday in Abuja, stressed that the organization is just a “movement.”

He further stressed that he has not renounced his membership in All Progressives Congress (APC), adding that there are two different things between a party and movement.

“The aims and objectives of the coalition, it makes it mandatory for us to hit the ground running. Time is not on our side and if we are going to effect the aims of the coalition them we must run fast “

The former Governor pointed out that the old ones in the coalition would be like the guardian angel while the young ones would be in the driver seat and steer the ship of the country.

“What we are trying to do is like a guardian angel, it is you that must decide who is to do what and at what level. That is why we are having this meeting today and putting it back to you.”

The movement also lambasted the Federal Government over “the rising unemployment, insecurity and absence of credible socio-economic programmes” in the country.

Oyinlola said, “Youth unemployment has hit the roof. Every year, we produce millions of graduates who will soon realise that the country has no place for them. The devil will always find one horrible job or the other for the idle hands. The youths who manage to have jobs are not guaranteed their salaries at the end of the month. Even companies in the private sector are facing very difficult times with very great effects on their employees and their capacity to expand. Every sensible person knows that there is trouble ahead unless something urgent is done.”

“It is in our plan of action to democratically build and enthrone a new set of youthful and knowledgeable leadership for this country. We shall have offices and elected officers in every ward, Local Government Areas, states and in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

“The membership of the movement is open to all Nigerians of voting age. On funding, it is our belief that the money to run its affairs will come from the contributions of members at each level. The movement must not belong to a moneybag somewhere. That is the only way we do not end up as the problems we set out to solve.”

#BBNaija Day 3: Bitto Gets Cautioned By Big Brother

Featured Image

Big Brother Naija 2018 housemate, Bitto was summoned to the diary room by Biggie yesterday after cameras showed him touching Princess on her bed in the #BBNaija house, even as she appeared not to like it.

The cameras showed bitto trying to grope princess who apparently made efforts to rebuff him, and she even went as far as telling him. With bitto being summoned by big brother, it appears the housemate may have just earned himself a punishment for his thoughtless action.

However, big brother is yet to announce what his punishment will be, we hope it won’t result in something severe ,such as an eviction.

With 20 housemates in the #BBNaija house battling for the ultimate prize of N45 million, it is obvious that the Big Brother Naija season 3 tagged ‘Double Wahala, is already living up to its name.

If you would recall, a similar incidence occured in season 2 of #BBNaija 2017 edition when one of the male housemates, Kemen was condemned for allegedly touching a female housemate, TBoss without her consent.

In other related news in the #BBNaija house, Big Bother has been building up to the Housemates strategic pairings. Earlier on, he had the female housemates pair up with their male counterparts and it is quite interesting to see who is paired with who.

Here is a full list of the housemates pairing in the #BBNaija house.

Tobi & Cee-C
Lolu & Anto
Angel & Ifu Ennada
Leo & Alex
Teddy A & Bambam
Dee-One & Vandora
Bitto & Princess
Miracle & Nina
K.Brule & Khloe
Rico Swavey & Ahneeka.

With the pairing of the housemates and big brother making it known to them that each pair will suffer the same fate, regarding rewards, punishments and eviction as the case may be, the #BBNaija house is about to become explosive and much more interesting as the housemates have their work cut out for them as the days go by.

#BBNaija 2018 Day 3: Dee-one rejects Ahneeka During The Housemates Pairing

Featured Image

There is no doubt whatsoever that #BBnaija 2018 with tthe theme: double wahala will bring the heat and passion viewers expect as things are beginning to get interesting. As most of us already know, the big brother house is always filled with alliances ,betrayals and makeups.

Perhaps in a bid to make things more interesting in the #BBNaija house, big brother decided to pair all the 20 housemates. The female housemates were asked to go choose a guy who they wanted to pair with and they can only become a pair if the male housemate accepts.

Ahneeka was the first female housemate to choose a fellow housemate to pair with and she got rejected by Dee-One. She had to wait until every other housemate had been paired before she chose the remaining housemate, Rico Swavey.

With the rejection of her gesture by dee-one, it seems that Ahneeka will hold this in mind for the future.

Furthermore, since each housemate’s fate in the house is now tied to their partner as they will be rewarded, punished and evicted together, a lot of twists and turns will definitely occur as the days go by in the #bbnaija house.

Ferdinand Hails Kane And Slams Lukaku

Featured Image

Rio Ferdinand has slammed Lukaku, saying Harry Kane played like a real no. 9 and is the difference between the two.

Kane did not score a goal against United, but was a bother for the defence, playing a role in the opener.

Ferdinand heaped praise on the premier league’s leading scorer and was impressed with his link up play.

“I think Kane showed today why he’s the best striker in the league and one of the most potent in Europe because he’s bullied United’s centre halves,” Ferdinand told BT Sport.

“He totally dominated them physically and brought other people into play. The contrast between him and Lukaku today was so evident it was unbelievable from up here where we watched it.

“The ball going into him, sticking, holding centre halves off and bringing others into the game. That’s a real No. 9. That’s what you want to see a No. 9 do.”
