Spain

Chinese Super League club Hebei China Fortune are preparing another bid for Barcelona forward Lionel Messi after their first move was rejected. The Argentine legend has just signed a new long-term deal at the Nou Camp with a €700m (£617.8m) release clause. New rules in Chinese football mean any deal would cost Hebei a staggering €1.4billion (£1.2billion). (Mundo Deportivo)

Real Madrid playmaker Isco was the man of the moment earlier on in the season but Zinedine Zidane is prepared to sell him during the summer window, and Premier League clubs are on high alert. He remains to be a Liverpool transfer target, while Arsenal and Manchester City have been long-term admirers. However, Juventus and Bayern Munich are believed to be rivals for his signature. (AS)

Robert Lewandowski wants to move to Real Madrid. The Bayern Munich striker has been tentatively linked with Real over recent years but he and his agent, Cezary Kucharski, believe now it’s now or never as he approaches his 30th birthday. Bayern Munich have said they will not keep anybody at the club against their wishes. Zidane may see him as the man to spearhead his new-look attack. (Marca)

Germany

Bayern Munich are in the market for wingers. Both Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben are in the twilight of their careers and, though they have Serge Gnabry and Kingsley Coman waiting in the wings, the bosses in Bavaria believe they need more. Christian Pulisic, a Manchester United transfer target, and Leon Bailey, subject to Chelsea transfer rumours during winter, are two players who interest the Bundesliga leaders. (Kicker)

New Watford coach Javi Gracia made an attempt to reunite with Ignacio Camacho during the January transfer window. The defensive midfielder is now with Wolfsburg but spent seven years at Malaga prior to the move to Germany. Gracia was his manager for two seasons at La Rosaleda and he wanted to bring him to Vicarage Road to bolster his midfielder options but Wolfsburg were not open to selling. (Kicker)

Italy

Juventus’ Paulo Dybala may be on the move this summer. The Argentine playmaker has not renewed the lease on his luxury house in Turin which comes to an end in July. He is believed to be a Barcelona transfer target but after the arrival of Philippe Coutinho and the fact they continue to court Antoine Griezmann, it now looks unlikely. There is a belief La Liga rivals Real Madrid could make a move to keep pace with Barcelona. (Calciomercato)

Roma are looking to bring Mateo Kovacic, a one-time Tottenham Hotspur transfer target, back to Serie A. The former Inter Milan midfielder is having a tough time breaking into the Real Madrid starting XI on a regular basis and may move in order to increase his chances of first-team football. Monchi is hopeful he will swap Madrid for Rome. (Corriere dello Sport)

Amin Younes could be in hot water if he reneges on the deal he signed with Napoli. The German-born midfielder caught the eye while playing for Ajax and agreed to join the Serie A leaders in the summer. The deal is official and the contract is signed. However, in a recent interview the player implied his future is undecided, forcing Napoli to release a statement: “If Amin Younes takes different paths he will assume all the responsibilities in the economic and disciplinary field.” (Gazzetta dello Sport)

France

Zidane could soon replace Didier Deschamps as the manager of the France national team. Florentino Perez has reportedly settled on Joachim Low to replace Zidane in Madrid, freeing him up to replace Deschamps who, despite having an impressive pool of players to choose from, has failed to capture the imagination of the country with his choice of football. (Le10Sport)

Paris Saint-Germain are battling it out with Real Madrid for the signature of Thibaut Courtois. The Chelsea goalkeeper is stalling on a new deal with the Premier League champions and is believed to want to return to Spain to be closer to his family. However, PSG believe they can put together a package that will convince him that Paris is the play for him to continue his careers. (Le10Sport)

Mohamed Elneny has insisted that Arsenal can still win this season’s Premier League title.

Arsenal are currently sixth in the Premier League table – 24 points behind the leaders Manchester City with just 12 matches of the 2017-18 campaign left to play.

Jay Rodriguez Reacts To Being Charged For Alleged Racial Abuse By The FA

West Brom striker Jay Rodriguez has pledged to prove his innocence after being hit with a Football Association charge for alleged racial abuse.

The charge relates to an incident during West Brom’ 2-0 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion last month between Rodriguez and Seagulls defender Gaetan Bong.

An FA statement said it was alleged that the West Brom player “used abusive and/or insulting words which included a reference to ethnic origin and/or colour and/or race”.

Rodriguez wrote on his Twitter account on Thursday evening: “Absolutely gutted and in disbelief at the situation I find myself in. I 100% deny the false allegation and will take the correct legal advice to prove my innocence.”

West Brom say they will “fully support” the England international, who has until February 16 to respond to the FA.

Mauricio Pochettino Very Happy To Give Harry Kane A Break

Featured Image

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino has admitted that he was pleased to be able to rest Harry Kane for the FA Cup fourth round replay with Newport County.

Harry Kane was named on the bench for the game at Wembley Stadium, but two first-half goals meant that the England international could watch the 2-0 win from the sidelines.

Harry Kane suffered with illness over the Christmas period, and Pochettino has acknowledged that he had been keen to hand the player a break before Saturday’s North London derby with Arsenal.

At a press conference, the 45-year-old told reporters: “Yes, it’s important to have all the players fresh.

“Of course with him, in a very short period, he suffered two illnesses and it’s important to care about him. He was fantastic with plenty of energy and then he got a cold, and dropped his energy.

“For me yesterday it was so important to keep him away from the game to provide better energy for the next few games.”

Leicester City Manager Claude Puel Confirms Riyad Mahrez Will Miss Manchester City Clash

Featured Image

Claude Puel has confirmed that Riyad Mahrez won’t play for Leicester against Man City on Saturday.

“I hope he can get his head right and come back with us and work hard. The best way is to come back and enjoy his football,” the manager said.

“Riyad is a magnificent player. He loves football, he loves his relationship with his team-mates, he enjoys his football. I think he needs to come back, to play and touch the ball.”

“I don’t want to comment and give details of our relationship with Riyad. It is important to all details remain inside the club and not in the public.

“I can understand all this speculation. I think it is important in this difficult time to keep all players, and club, united. Together, to look forward and continue the hard work on the pitch.”

Mahrez was reportedly left “very depressed” by his failure to secure a move to City on transfer deadline day, and it has since been claimed that the Citizens will not return with an offer at the end of the season.

Riyad Mahrez has scored eight times and registered eight assists in 24 Premier League appearances this season.

Hazard: New Arrivals To Blame For Poor Form

Featured Image

Eden Hazard believes Chelsea’s current run of bad form is down to the new players, who are not well adapted to the league.

Chelsea won the league in Conte’s first season in charge, and they decided to switch up the squad over the break.

Ake, Costa and Matic left the club, with Bakayoko, Rudiger, Zappacosta and Morata joining the squad.

Too much tweaking has been blamed for the reversal in fortune, with Belgian forward Hazard telling ESPN FC on the evolution at Stamford Bridge: “We changed a couple of things, we lost players, we brought some new ones and every year is different.

“That’s why we love football – if there is only one team that wins it would be boring. That’s why football is special. You never know what’s going to happen, especially in England.”

Bitcoin: World Bank Likens Cryptocurrencies To Ponzi Schemes

Featured Image

The World Bank has compared cryptocurrencies to “Ponzi schemes,” a cautionary comparison that further raises questions about the legitimacy of digital currencies such as Bitcoin.

“In terms of using Bitcoin or some of the cryptocurrencies, we are also looking at it, but I’m told the vast majority of cryptocurrencies are basically Ponzi schemes,” Bloomberg quoted the World Bank Group President Jim Yong Kim as saying this on Wednesday, February 8, at an event in Washington.

“It’s still not really clear how it’s going to work.”

The development lender is “looking really carefully” at blockchain technology, a platform that uses so-called distributed ledgers to allow digital assets to be traded securely. There’s hope the technology could be used in developing countries to “follow the money more effectively” and reduce corruption, Kim said.

The value of cryptocurrencies soared in 2017 before slumping, with Bitcoin losing nearly two-thirds of its value since mid-December.

While cryptocurrency technology has the potential to reshape global finance, concerns have been raised about its volatility and the potential for money laundering or other crimes.

  • BIS Chief Slams Bitcoin As Ponzi Scheme and Threat to Central Banks

The head of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) has blasted bitcoin as “a combination of a bubble, a Ponzi scheme” and, due to the energy consumption required for mining it, an “environmental disaster”

Calling for more regulation in a speech on Tuesday, Agustin Carstens, general manager of the BIS, warned that cryptocurrencies could become “parasites” on the financial system and argued that they must be held to the same standards as other banking and payment services, Reuters reports.

Forbes further cites Carstens as saying that cryptocurrencies should not be allowed to undermine trust in central banks. He argued that the consequences of debasing this trust have historically been detrimental, referencing the 19th century production of currencies by private banks as a cause of financial turmoil that subsequently brought about the creation of the Federal Reserve System.

“The tried, trusted and resilient modern way to provide confidence in public money is the independent central bank,” Carstens stated, while lauding the protections banks afford consumers and investors.

Cryptocurrency is a digital currency in which encryption techniques are used to regulate the generation of units of currency and verify the transfer of funds, operating independently of a central bank.

While Ponzi scheme is a fraudulent investment operation where the operator generates returns for older investors through revenue paid by new investors, rather than from legitimate business activities or profit of financial trading.

Borno Begins Vaccination Of 1.2Million IDPs For Yellow Fever

Featured Image

The Borno State Government in collaboration with the World Health Organisation (WHO) and UNICEF, has commenced vaccination of 1.2 million people against yellow fever in the state.

The exercise, which begun on Monday, February 5, is expected to end on February 14, 2018.

The exercise is also expected to target displaced persons at their camps across 57 wards in 25 local governments of the state, the WHO and UNICEF said in a joint statement, in Maiduguri, on Wednesday.

“More than 3,000 WHO-trained volunteers, including senior supervisors, monitors, healthcare workers and community leaders, will immunize 1.2 million IDPs aged from 9 months to 45 years at designated health facilities,” the international organisations said.

UNICEF Nigeria Representative, Mohammed Fall, said large children in the volatile Borno State may be deprived of life-saving right should they miss out of the vaccination exercise.

His WHO counterpart, Dr. Wondimagegnehu Alemu, said the exercise was of “high public health importance to protect most-at-risk populations living in high-risk condition” though Borno has not recorded any outbreak of Yellow fever.

Yellow fever is caused by a virus (Flavivirus) which is transmitted to humans by the bites of infected aedes and haemogogus mosquitoes.

The news comes at a time when the Yobe Commissioner for Health, Dr. Bello Kawuwa, disclosed that the state has recorded 10 new cases of Cebro Spinal Meningitis with three deaths in 2018.

Fraud: EFCC Arrests Fake U.S. Army Colonel

Featured Image

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) says it has arrested two men for “impersonating” its operatives to obtain $10,000 by false presence.

Spokesman of the commission, Mr Wilson Uwujaren, disclosed this in a statement.

Uwujaren identified the suspects as one Mike Nkwocha and Richardson Obasogie, a “self-confessed Colonel in the United States Army”.

He said their victim (not identified) had petitioned the commission alleging that one Ladan Mustapha, who claimed to be an EFCC operative, called to inform him that there was a petition against him.

Mustapha allegedly told the victim that the petition bordered on illegal acquisition of assets in different parts of the country for which he was currently under investigation.

“Together with his partner, Nkwocha, a meeting was arranged, in which $200,000 was demanded as gratification in order to “kill” the case, but $15,000 was later agreed upon as payment.

“An initial payment of $5,000 cash was made to Nkwocha, while he continued to put pressure on him for the balance of $10,000.

“However, suspecting foul play, after a retired personnel of the DSS (Department of State Services) told the petitioner that EFCC operatives don’t demand money to carry out official duties, the EFCC was petitioned,” Uwujaren said.

According to him, Nkwocha was arrested, and during interrogation, confessed that Obasogie was the “brain” behind the fraud.

He said a search warrant was executed on the suspects’ houses resulting in the recovery of incriminating items.

He listed the items as letterheads of the United States Government, DSS, National Intelligence Agency, Independent National Electoral Commission and Bayelsa State Government, and one computer system.

Uwujaren added that Nkwocha and Obasogie would be charged to court as soon as investigations were concluded.

Meanwhile, operatives are intensifying search for Ladan Mustapha, who is currently at large, he said.

The Collapse Of Kwankwasiya’s Test-Tube Baby

The Collapse of Kwankwasiya’s Test-tube Baby, By Louis Odion

CLICK here to read more opinion articles

For a myth that took so long to construct, how sad that it took just a fleeting moment for Kwankwasiya to be finally dismantled. Sadder still, unlike the loud song and wild dance witnessed at its christening years ago, there was no ceremony – much less the customary parade of iconic red caps – the day Governor Umar Ganduje of Kano publicly disowned his mentor and predecessor, Rabiu Kwankwaso.

This piece was written by Louis Odion. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

Speaking in Dakata, the estranged godson described his godfather in very grave terms: “Most contracts undertaken by Kwankwaso were carried out with several misdeeds and betrayals, which I’ll soon expose for people to know the calibre of person my predecessor was.”

Then pressing the equivalent of a nuclear button, Ganduje alleged a grand plot against President Buhari vis-a-vis the 2019 succession: “Some people have been trying to undermine President Buhari with all sorts of things. We’ll not tolerate it again here in Kano because we’re tired of his (Kwankwaso’s) atrocities… People who are now telling all sorts of things are sycophants. They don’t want Buhari to succeed.

“These people know themselves. When it gets to that stage, I’ll name them one after the other. We’re solidly behind President Buhari and his programmes and the people of the state will not support anyone or groups of people working against President Buhari and his programmes.”

Indeed, a crisis of confidence had been brewing quietly between Ganduje and Kwankwaso since 2015. At the root is what seems to be ego. Things finally went out of hands early in 2016 when the Kano governor lost his mum. A version of the story has it that Kwankwaso was the first person Ganduje broke the sad news to. But rather than personally attend the burial which happened on the same day, the former sent a representative. This apparently did not go down well with the grieving governor, considering that the federal government deemed it appropriate to send a high-powered delegation and distant friends like Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto found time to attend, despite the short notice.

When Kwankwaso finally turned up three days later, he, in his own wisdom, put up a carnival of sorts. The story is told that his associates in each of Kano’s 44 councils were mobilised to join his convoy at the city gate in two buses per district. By the time the senator’s caravan stopped in the governor’s native Ganduje village, no fewer than 150 vehicles were counted.

Given the tension already in the air, the governor’s camp were quick to read politics into Kwankwaso’s showing. In fact, the hardliners likened it to dancing on the fresh grave of the governor’s mother.

Ganduje himself lent credence to this in his outburst shortly afterwards: “God wanted to expose his (Kwankwaso’s) antics perpetrated against the President, he chose my mother’s death to launch (his) presidential campaign. But we leave him with the people.”

So far, Kwankwaso has not responded. In the interim, we can only speculate on the real forces fueling the sudden turn of events in Kano today. But one thing is certain: Kwankwaso’s vulnerability is exposed and the durability of his eponymous movement severely questioned. If truly there is any depth to his Kwankwasiya postulation as a tentative preface to a progressive ideology, it remains to be seen in a coherent articulation, beyond the vanishing comedy of the procession of a rambunctious mob in gaudy red caps.

Obviously, Kwankwaso’s bragging right on the national state today is premised on a claim to the dominion of Kano’s political space. As governor, he delivered all the 44 councils to APC in 2014. To rub it in, he would take space on the front page of leading national dailies to advertise PDP’s humiliation in Kano under his command.

In the subsequent general elections of March 28, 2015, not only did Kwankwaso also inspire APC to rout PDP in the presidential poll, he made a clean sweep of the senatorial and House of Representatives seats as well. He magisterially cemented his invincibility by annexing one of the senatorial seats to himself. But with Ganduje now up in arms, it is obvious Kwankwaso already has an insurgency to deal with at home. The falcon can no longer hear the falconer. Tellingly, members of the Kano Assembly reportedly passed a resolution forbidding the wearing of the fraternal red caps, symbolically marking the severance of allegiance to Kwankwaso.

From what is now known, questions are bound to be asked about Kwankwaso’s own sense of political judgement from the outset. Before then, no further diagnosis is needed to certify what is already a clear and present affliction: the onset of the familiar post-power withdrawal syndrome. Having been lord and master of Kano for eight years, it would seem Kwankwaso, like most mortals, is still unable to reconcile himself to the diminution of status now as former governor. Alas, Kwankwasiya, contrary to the inaugural promise, has woefully failed to deliver to him a blanket immunity for impunity. In the circumstance, the senator, therefore, deserves our pity.

Years ago, Pius Anyim Pius found himself explaining to an august gathering why he arrived at a national event terribly late. “Please pardon me,” began the then secretary to the government of the federation. “You know, we politicians, our ways are never straight. When we say we’re coming, you can never be too sure because condition may warrant that we make a stop somewhere on the way.”

Candid as that may sound, the other truth is actually unspeakable. If we bother to dig deeper, we will find that two chief factors make it near impossible for the quintessential Nigerian public office-holder to be punctual. Other than congenital indiscipline, the other would be narcissism rooted in delusion. The political emperor barely sleeps, often busy doing nothing. And that is only because, in his base vanity, he simply can’t bear or imagine, even for a second, moments that sleep would naturally steal from him. Being awake forever, therefore, means a carnal opportunity to suck every waking moment of the pleasure possible, the same way an infant ravenously lick the candy wrapping for the last trace of honey.

After rail-roading his deputy to succeed him, it is only human that the least Kwankwaso would have expected is that the existing sitting order in Kano’s temple of power remains. His Ganduje gambit in 2015 was no doubt a novel card on the table. Indeed, the nation’s memory was already littered with the relics of succession experiments that had failed. In Enugu of 2007, for instance, Chimaroke Nnamani had dusted up a political nobody, Sullivan Chime, to succeed him as his second term was nearing its end. But no sooner had INEC declared the latter governor-elect than he dramatically declared a fatwa on his political benefactor, thus exposing the inherent deformity of Nnamani’s Ebeano movement.

Elsewhere in Cross Rivers, with his childhood buddy, Liyel Imoke, riding to the Calabar White House in 2007, debonaire Donald Duke thought he had found a perfect guy to sustain his legacies like the Tinapa Project. But not only did they begin to have disagreements shortly afterward, they practically were no longer on greeting terms by the time Imoke’s first term ended in 2011.
Indeed, very rare is it on Nigeria’s peculiar political landscape for an incumbent governor to allow his deputy succeed him like Kwankwaso enthusiastically did last year. Many quickly interpreted that as the political circumcision and confirmation of Ganduje, who had cut his first tooth in politics as personal assistant to Kwankwaso in the early 1990s, as the new heir apparent to the Kwankwasiya stool. A maximalist, Kwankwaso did not stop there. He also ensured that Hafiz Abubakar, his old classmate at the Kaduna Polytechnic, more than forty years before and his one-time political adviser and finance commissioner, was made Ganduje’s running-mate.

With that, the flanks were supposed to have been secured for Kwankwaso’s complete dominion of Kano’s political space in the foreseeable future. Alas, that prospects now look threatened.

Taken together, the chief lesson to be drawn from the Ganduje/Kwankwaso conundrum is that there is no substitute for substance. There is no short-cut to political immortality other than working selflessly for the community in a way that one’s name eventually get etched in people’s subconscious, not necessarily while still in power. What will endure has to grow. Without God’s approval, the architect, however aggressive, soon finds he toiled in vain. Really, only a deluded leader is carried away by the glut of cenotaphs named after him while still in office. Or when disciples, out of sycophancy, begin to dress like him or make a badge of his name to pick crumbs from his golden dining table. The true test of a leader is whether the same folks will still obey their command when they are no longer in a position to doll out cash or favour.

Those who, therefore, assume they can inherit the future by disguise or condoning the obscenity of hero-worship today will sooner than later realise it is all an exercise in futility. Ahmadu Bello, for instance, earned immortality in the North by the durable castle he built in people’s minds, not the financial empire bequeathed to his brood. Awo’s fur cap assumed transcendental halo only after his transition. In contemporary terms, Bola Tinubu today has grown much bigger out of office than when in power, only because yesterday he was willing to die for his convictions in the grave hour when compromise was more convenient and lucrative. Greater is he who is able to exercise authority in the society without political power.

In Kano, the gloves are now obviously discarded as the ancient megalopolis south of Sudan braces for certain political turbulence ahead.

Woman To Die By Hanging In Bayelsa For Killing Her Husband

A State High Court in Bayelsa on Tuesday, sentenced to death by hanging a 30-year-old Victoria Gagariga for the killing of her husband, Henry Gagariga, on February 4, 2015, at the residence along Ebisam Road in Akenfa, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.

Delivering his judgement, Justice Nayai Aganaba said he was convinced beyond all reasonable doubts that the deceased, a lawyer from Sagbama Local Government Area, was killed by his wife.

The convict, Victoria, hails from Brass Local Government Area and is an employee of the Bayelsa Arts and Culture and had been cohabiting for years before the couple decided to legalise their union in 2014. The union was yet to produce children before the incident.

Victoria reportedly stabbed her husband on the neck on the day after a misunderstanding between herself and her deceased husband who was confirmed dead on arrival at the hospital.

Before the judgement, the judge disclosed that the prosecution called six witnesses and produced seven exhibits while the defence only had one witness who was also the accused.

He said the onus of proof that the accused committed the murder of her husband rested with the prosecution in line with the three ingredients to prove a murder case.

According to him, the ingredients included that the deceased died, that the death of the deceased was caused by the accused and that the action of the accused which caused the death of the deceased was intentional with the knowledge that death or grievous bodily harm was its probable consequence.

The judge who pointed out that the circumstantial evidence against the accused was overwhelming, said all facts confirmed that she was the only person with the deceased at the time of death and the only person to have the opportunity to have killed him.

According to him Victoria committed a murder of passion which was a result of jealously as the couple were obsessed with each other.

“It is unfortunate that I can only pronounce the sentence prescribed by law. I wish I had the discretion to do otherwise. However, that discretion rests with the Governor of Bayelsa State.

“I am only left with the compulsion to pronounce the sentence prescribed by law. I hope that person with the discretion would look at the circumstance of this case and do the needful. My sentence upon you is that you shall hang on the neck until you die,” he ruled.
