Wenger: Ramsey Not Guaranteed To Play Carabao Cup Final

Featured Image

Arsene Wenger has revealed it is a possibility for Ramsey to miss the Carabao Cup final against City.

The Arsenal midfielder scored a hatrrick in the 5-1 riot of Everton, but he missed the loss to Tottenham due to a groin injury.

He didn’t travel with the squad for the first leg of their last-32 Europa clash against Ostersunds.

And Wenger fears the key midfielder could miss the final against City.

“Ramsey is a little bit of a sensitive case,” he told a news conference in Sweden on Wednesday. “He doesn’t move forward as quickly as I expected.

“I would say certainly he will not be available for the second game against Ostersunds. For the cup final, I don’t know. It depends on how he progresses from now.”

“The pace is unbelievable from Costa,” Ferdinand told BTSport.

Fulani Herdsmen Agree To Cease Fire In Benue

Featured Image

There are strong indications that the attacks and cruel killings that have ravaged several parts of Benue State may have come to an end as the Fulani Herdsmen responsible for the hostilities have agreed to lay down their arms.

Vanguard reports that they have also agreed to abide by the provisions of the Benue Open Grazing Prohibition Law.

However, the herders are asking for more time to help them adapt to the new policy as well as resort to grazing in the grazing reserves already developed in the Northern parts of the country.

It is understood that the agreement was reached at the end of the meeting by the herdsmen, stakeholders and governors of Benue and Nasarawa states with members of Technical Sub Committee of National Economic Council Committee mediating in the herdsmen and farmers crisis in Benue, Nasarawa, Adamawa and Taraba states, headed by Governor Dave Umahi of Ebonyi State.

Speaking with newsmen on Tuesday, at the end of its assignment in Makurdi, the chairman of the committee, Governor Umahi said the team had successful meetings with all the parties in Benue and Nasarawa states.

Umahi said: “In our own conviction, we believe that Benue has the right to make laws and whoever stays in Benue has the duty to obey the law and the responsibility to dialogue with the state if they feel the law will not favour them.”

“We observed that all the parties are willing to make peace and we are looking at the conditions and suggestions of the various groups handed over to us as the way forward to having peace.

“From discussions, it was agreed by the parties that Benue State has the right to make laws and that individuals or group of people that are in the state have a duty to obey the law.

“They also have a duty to meet with the authorities of the law to dialogue on any section of the law that they believe will not favour them.

“We have agreed, from all parties to this unfortunate matter, that we will pursue peace, disarm any group that is harbouring militia and support the security chiefs to arrest anyone found with illegal weapons.

“The security people have also vowed that in line with the directive they have, anybody with illegal weapon must be arrested, no matter who the person is.

“The cheering news is that the herdsmen in Benue and Nasarawa states are willing to abide by the Open Grazing Prohibition Law of Benue State but they would need more time for ranching and support from the Federal Government to move into grazing reserves.”

Representative Council Of Black Associations Criticises Referee Who Booked Balotelli For Complaining About Racist Abuse

Featured Image

The French referee who booked Mario Balotelli for making a gesture toward Dijon fans after being subjected monkey chants is “doubly guilty” in the alleged racist abuse, a French body defending black rights has claimed.

The Representative Council of Black Associations (CRAN) has made a complaint to police over the actions of referee Nicolas Rainville, who showed Balotelli the yellow card during Nice’s Ligue 1 defeat at the weekend.

Mario Balotelli had reportedly told Rainville he had reacted after he had been the target of racism from the home fans.

“The footballer suffered twice: racist chants and the punishment that followed,” a CRAN press release stated. “The CRAN would like to remind everyone that racism is a crime, laid down in the penal code. The referee who does nothing in the face of racism is complicit.

“When he punishes the victim, he is doubly guilty. He deserves to be hauled before the courts and receive an exemplary punishment.”

The French Football League (LFP) has said its Disciplinary Commission will look into the matter when it sits for the first time since the incident on Thursday.

CRAN, however, wants the French government to act.

“The world is upside down,” CRAN president Louis-Georges Tin said. “Once again, it’s the victims who are punished. We ask the Minister for Sport to intervene in this matter with all the necessary severity.”

Nice president Jean-Pierre Rivere has assured Balotelli of the club’s full support, stating: “We are all convinced of the same thing, racism has no place in a football stadium, nor anywhere else.”

With Philippe Coutinho Gone, Roberto Firmino’s Form Is Now Evident- Jurgen Klopp

Featured Image

Liverpool. manager Jurgen Klopp believes Roberto Firmino’s excellent form for Liverpool may now be more obvious following the departure of his former teammate Philippe Coutinho.

Roberto Firmino scored his 20th goal of the season in all competitions at Southampton on Sunday, with five of those strikes in the Champions League.

Only Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane and Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo have scored more goals in that competition this term.

Firmino has combined with Mohamed Salah to score 49 goals for Liverpool this season

“When I came in I said immediately that I was happy Roberto was here,” Klopp said at a news conference on Tuesday to preview Liverpool’s Champions League round-of-16 tie at Porto. “I don’t think he has stepped up recently but maybe it is more obvious because his situations are not overshadowed by Phil Coutinho’s situations. That’s how it is.

“He’s a very important player and he doesn’t always have to be the standout player. As often as he can be, that’s good. Is he underrated? I don’t think so, not anymore. I don’t know what other people think about Roberto Firmino. But people with a football brain judge him right.”

Firmino said the exit last month of Coutinho, his close friend, forced he and his Liverpool teammates to step up and take on further responsibility.

“Coutinho is a great player and of course, when he left, that put a greater responsibility on everyone else to perform without him,” Firmino said. “It is our job to deal with greater responsibility and I think we have done that so far.

“I’m going to do what I can to help [Salah] score goals and to help all the team. I also want to help myself to make a good season.”

I’d Rather Have Harry Kane Over Cristiano Ronaldo On Recent Form- Matt Le Tissier

Featured Image

Matt Le Tissier has said he would rather have Harry Kane in his team on current form than Cristiano Ronaldo if he were a manager.

Cristiano Ronaldo Ronaldo has won the Champions League four times – once with Manchester United and on three occasions with Real Madrid – but it is Harry Kane who is making the headlines this season, with the Spurs striker recently linked with a summer move to the Bernabeu.

The England international has scored 37 goals in all competitions this season compared to Ronaldo’s 25 and Sky Sports Football expert Le Tissier is hugely impressed by Kane, who scored Tottenham’s opening goal as they came from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Juventus in Turin on Tuesday night.

“Right now, on this season’s form, I would take Harry Kane,” Le Tissier told Premier League Daily. “Ronaldo has done it over a longer period of time and there is many a season you would pick Cristiano over him. But this season, Harry has stepped it up another level. He has been brilliant for the last three or four years but this season he has taken it up a notch.

“There is one little point that needs to be mentioned: We give foreign players a lot of stick for diving and I saw one little thing in last night’s game that I didn’t particularly like, that was when Harry Kane dived to try and win a penalty. He needs to cut that out of his game and that is something that needs to be said. He and Dele Alli have got to be very careful with the way they throw themselves to the ground.”

2018 Budget: Tambuwal Signs N220.5 Billion Into Law In Sokoto

Featured Image

Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal of Sokoto State on Wednesday, February 14, signed the 2018 budget recently passed by the State House of Assembly into law.

Tambuwal, while assenting the Appropriation Bill at a ceremony held at the Government House in Sokoto, promised to implement the N220.5 billion budget optimally for the benefit of the people of the state.

The budget sets aside 69.9 percent, or N152.8, for capital expenditure and N67.6 billion, representing over 30 percent, for recurrent expenditure.

For the third year running, the education sector got the highest allocation with 26.1 percent of the budget, followed by health sector with N20.932 billion, and agriculture with N16.535 billion.

N14.255 billion was allocated to Works and Transport while Lands, Housing and Survey got N11.560 billion.

According to him, despite the challenges the state faced in meeting revenue targets in the past, the government was hopeful of implementing the 2018 fiscal document.

“We are aware that the legislature has not tinkered with the overall budget size, even though they have reallocated some resources to different subheads, we are happy with that.

“We believe it is within the purview of your rights as legislators to do what you have done and we will implement it as passed,” the governor added.

Eden Hazard Praises His New Teammate Olivier Giroud

Featured Image

Eden Hazard has praised new Chelsea signing Olivier Giroud as an impressive target man.

Olivier Giroud, an £18m Deadline Day signing from Arsenal, made his first Chelsea start against West Brom on Monday Night and provided the assist for the first of Hazard’s two goals the 3-0 win.

Eden Hazard believes the physical presence of the France international will help free up space for his team-mates in attacking areas.

“I think he’s a great target man,” said Hazard. “He has a lot of defenders around him so we are free to play around him, myself, Pedro and Willian. He’s a good guy, a good target man and he can score a lot of goals. He’s a good point of reference but we have him, we have Alvaro (Morata) and I can also play as a striker.”

Hazard was impressed by Giroud’s intelligent runs and hold-up play and it was his deft flick which left the playmaker clear to score Chelsea’s opener.

“I have just finished registering myself as a very proud Nigerian; I am very proud to hold this identity card and I also urge all Lagosians to do the same. We are proudly Lagosians and we are very proud Nigerians. So, I urge every Lagosian to come out and get their national identity cards. It is in our best interest and it is also good for data planning and financial planning for all the things that we are trying to deliver to our people. So, I urge everyone to come out and register.”
The NIMC Regional Coordinator for Lagos, Mr Kayode Adegoke commended Governor Ambode for leading the registration process and for the massive infrastructural development across the State. Adegoke added that the NIMC was proud to be associated with the State Government to deliver on the scheme.
Adegoke said:
“After this, the system will generate an eleven digits unique national identification number similar to what is obtainable in the developed world. That unique number is your identity and NIMC will provide assured identity which is the second token. After that, the unique general multi-purpose electronic identity card will also be presented. The card has about 16 outlets and about 18 security features. With this sir, we want to thank you (Governor Ambode) for what you are doing for us in Lagos State; we want to thank you for the work you are doing and we like to assure you that we will partner with the State Government to ensure the progress of the State,”
The National Identity Card Scheme is being administered in Lagos in partnership with the Lagos State Residents Registration Agency (LASRRA).

Plateau State Government Fires 747 Teachers

Featured Image

The Plateau State government on Wednesday announced the dismissal of no less than 747 primary school teachers.

It is understood that some of the affected teachers failed to tender the minimum teaching qualification certificates as required by the state’s Teaching Service Commission.

Also, the state government also announced the reinstatement of 141 teachers disengaged earlier.

These disclosures were made today by the Chairman of the state’s Universal Basic Education, Mathew Sule, in Jos, the state capital, at a refresher course for officials in the education sector.

Premium Times quoted Mr. Sule as saying that the affected teachers did not present the basic certificates that qualified them to teach in public schools within the time stipulated for them to do so.

He further disclosed that those who had attained the maximum number of years of public service were also retired.

Speaking on the 141 teachers that have been recalled, Mr. Sule revealed that they had met the requirements laid down by government.

Shortly before he left office, the former administration of former Governor Jonah Jang sacked over 4000 primary school teachers it found not to have the basic qualifications to teach.

But Mr. Sule also revealed that there was an urgent need to employ new teachers to fill the vacancies created following the development and to enable public schools to have teachers for all subjects.

UNILAG Announces Postponement Of 2017 Convocation

The management of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) has announced the postponement of its convocation ceremony for the 2016/2017 academic session.

The Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, made this disclosure to newsmen on Tuesday.

The varsity’s 50th Convocation was previously scheduled to commence on February 19.

However, Odundipe said that a suitable date for the ceremony would be announced in due course.

The university, in a statement earlier had stated that a news conference to announce activities lined up for the event had been slated for Feb. 14.

He said: “Yes, after some deliberations with management, the university has decided to postpone the convocation ceremony.

“This is as a result of the challenges posed by the on-going strike embarked upon by members of the non –academic labour unions of universities.

“The ceremony was earlier scheduled to hold from Monday, Feb. 19 to Thursday Feb. 22

“The activities of these unions have the potential of snowballing and marring the carefully laid out arrangements already put in place for the ceremony.’’

Ogundipe stated that though arrangements for a successful ceremony were already at an advanced stage, the institution would not give room for anything that might cause any form of inconvenience or embarrassments to invited guests.

“The university remains committed to providing a conducive atmosphere that would foster quality teaching and research as well as produce graduates that can compete with their counterparts globally.

“Hence, members of the community are enjoined to continue their lawful activities,’’ the vice-chancellor concluded.

Alexandre Lacazette Injury Is A Massive Blow For Arsenal- Arsene Wenger

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger says losing Alexandre Lacazette for up to six weeks is “a massive blow” for the club

Arsene Wenger also believes striker’s knee injury could be the reason for his poor form in front of goal.

Alexandre Lacazette underwent a minor operation on Tuesday and the club said he will be sidelined for four to six weeks, meaning he will miss the upcoming Europa League tie against Ostersund.

“It’s a massive blow for us, but we have to find a solution. and nobody could predict that,” Wenger told beIN Sports. “But football is as well to [deal] with unpredicted things, and it’s always a good opportunity to find somebody who steps in and does well.”

Lacazette, who joined from Lyon last summer in a then-club record £46.5 million deal, has been criticised for only scoring one goal since Dec. 2, and missed a great chance for an equaliser against Tottenham in the North London derby on Saturday.

“He got a surprising swell on the knee after the game against Tottenham, and he needed very quick surgery,” Wenger said, adding that the setback has been a big blow for the forward as well.

“Lacazette is down, but I think he recently must have felt something in his knee, I don’t know. Maybe as well that’s an explanation why he was not scoring as many goals as he’s used to.”

Borussia Dortmund Fined €50,000 By German FA For Fans’ Behaviour

Featured Image

Borussia Dortmund have been handed a fine of €50,000 because of their fans’ behaviour at three matches during the early stages of the season.

The German FA (DFB) issued the fine on Tuesday, which has already been accepted by the club, after BVB supporters set off fireworks at three games — a cup match at Magdeburg in August, the 4-4 draw with Schalke in November, and the 1-1 draw at Hertha Berlin in January.

During the match with Schalke on Nov. 25, 2017, Dortmund supporters also threw “filled beer cups into coaching zone twice as well several beer cups towards the Schalke keeper in the 80th minute,” the DFB said on its official website.

This is not a new situation to happen to the German club, Dortmund were previously fined on July 20, 2017 when the DFB issued a €95,000 penalty to the club after fans set off fireworks during the 2-1 win over Eintracht Frankfurt in the German Cup final last May.

And, in late November, UEFA handed BVB a €15,000 fine after supporters set off fireworks at a Champions League match in Cyprus against Apoel Nicosia.
