No Casualties Recorded As Dana Aircraft Overshoots PH Runway, Lands Inside The Bush

Featured Image

A Dana Aircraft – with registration numbers 9J0363 – flying from Lagos to Port-Harcourt has reportedly overshot runway at the Port-Harcourt International Airport on Tuesday night.

An aircraft is said to have overshot the runway when it moves past a specified point unintentionally, and this can be as a result of too much speed or that the plane is unable to stop.

But this particular incident was suspected to have been caused by a heavy rain, which was accompanied by strong wind and storm in Port Harcourt.

No casualty was recorded, as all passengers on board were safely evacuated from the bush area where it landed.

Confirming the development, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) said no one sustained injury in the incident.

“A Dana aircraft numbered 9J0363, flying from Abuja to Port Harcourt airport has overshot the Port Harcourt runway,” Henrietta Yakubu, spokeswoman of the agency, said in a statement.

“The incident was suspected to have been caused by a heavy rain, which was accompanied by strong wind and storm in Port Harcourt.

“No casualty was recorded, as all passengers on board were safely evacuated.”

The airline also confirmed the incident in a statement issued minutes after the incident occurred.

The statement read: “Our flight skidded off the runway at the Port Harcourt International Airport, as a result of the bad weather situation and torrential rain at the time of landing.

“No casualty was recorded and all passengers and crew disembarked safely.

“We commend the Pilot-in -command who was able to control the aircraft to a complete stop, before passengers and crew disembarked. We also wish to applaud the Captain for exhibiting the highest safety standards and handling the situation professionally.”

“Football Is More Than A Religion In Nigeria,” Says FIFA President During Lagos Visit

Featured Image

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has described Nigeria as a country with unquantifiable passion and love for football, and where football is more than a religion.

“I was told that in Nigeria football is passion, but it is a lie because it is more than that. In Nigeria I was told that football is love, but it is a lie it is more than that.

“In Nigeria, I was told that football is a religion, but it is a lie. It is more than that. In Nigeria, football is life,” he said in Lagos on Monday.

Infantino spoke at the maiden edition of the AITEO-NFF Awards, which was organised by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and bankrolled by oil giants AITEO Group.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the event held at the Eko Hotels and Suites saw Chelsea FC winger Victor Moses winning the “Player of the Year” award.

Speaking also at the event, the Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, pledged his administration’s continued support to football and sports in general.

“We will continue to give our unrelenting support to football and sports in general, I want to assure the President of FIFA that whenever he is coming back, Lagos will be considered to host a FIFA tournament,’’ he said.

In his address, the Deputy Managing Director of AITEO Group, Francis Peters, said the oil conglomerate was happy to be part of football history in Nigeria in good times.

NFF president Amaju Pinnick, on his part, said the awards night was to celebrate Nigerian legends for their contributions to the development of football in the country.

He also said football administration was a journey and not a destination, adding “therefore, there must be a conscious effort to minimise errors for fear of losing the opportunity.

“In Nigeria, football is a way of life and everybody is a coach. So, we need to be very careful. Football teaches us ethics and how to live a normal life,” Pinnick said.

NAN reports that Moses got the award and recognition for his stellar performances for the national team, the Super Eagles, en route their qualification for Russia 2018.

He was an integral part of the side during the historic qualification matches where he played in four of the six matches scoring three goals in the process.

Moses also helped his Chelsea side reclaim the English Premier League title in the 2016/2017 season where he featured in 40 games.

The 27-year old also got CAF’s recognition by being among the nominees for CAF’s Player of the Year award eventually won by Egypt’s Mohamed Salah.

To win the AITEO-NFF award, he beat competition from Leicester City’s Wilfred Ndidi and Lobi Stars’ Anthony Okpotu.

NAN reports that other winners at the awards include Rasheedat Ajibade who claimed the “Player of the Year (Women)’’ award and Ikouwon Udoh who emerged “Young Player of the Year (Women)’’.

FG To Announce Refinery Investors In March – Kachikwu

Featured Image

The Federal Government will announce the private investors for the country’s refineries in the coming March, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Mr. Ibe Kachikwu, said on Monday.

The minister made this known while speaking at a session during the ongoing Nigerian International Petroleum Summit (NIPS).

According to him, the government was also considering a policy that would compel multinational oil and gas firms operating in the company to build refineries in Nigeria.

The minister said, by that time, international oil firms would no longer be allowed to ship out all the crude oil they produced in Nigeria.

The minister noted that emphasis would shift to local production of substantial portion of the crude oil produced in the country.

His words:  “We would get to a point where Nigeria, definitely, would be a major supplier of refined petroleum products. It just has to happen. Nothing else makes sense.”

“We are also saying directly to oil companies that a time would also come when we would not be open to see them move around all the crude oil they produce in Nigeria.

“We will like to see integrated refining and integrated processing here. It gives us more jobs and creates more investment.”

OAU Lecturers Break Away From National ASUU

Featured Image

The Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) chapter of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has severed ties with the national body of the union.

It also formed a new association following a prolonged faceoff between the national and local chapter of the union.

The decision to pull out of ASUU national by OAU branch was taken at a congress held on February 12, when it rejected the resolutions of ASUU’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting on the face-off between it and the parent body over an internal crisis.

It was learnt that the congress decided “to constitute itself into a branch that is totally independent of NEC, adopt appropriate name and open a new branch account for the check-off dues of its members in this regards”.

It was also gathered that the resolution of the congress of the OAU chapter was signed by the chairman of its caretaker committee, Niyi Sunmonu.

“Last year, 732 of the 1,371 academic staff of Obafemi Awolowo University wrote to the university management to stop payment of their check off dues to the national body to express our displeasure against the way the national body handles the OAU branch’s crisis. There are several reasons for pulling out which include the alleged unilateral removal of the elected treasurer by ASUU national president and also the alleged transfer of N11 million from OAU branch account to ASUU national account,” he said.

Also, the decision of ASUU’s NEC to accept the suspended and contentious result of the vice chancellor selection and the rejection of the caretaker committee to run the affairs of the union, after the presiding officers had abandoned the congress midway on Thursday, October 20, 2016, which he conveyed, was another reason they pulled out.

Brazilian Football Match Abandoned After Players Received 10 Red Cards (VIDEO)

Featured Image

A hot-tempered Brazilian football match between Vitoria and Bahia was abandoned after 10 players were sent off after the match descended into chaos and an on-pitch brawl.

It was gathered that a total of 10 players – five from each side – received their marching orders in the second half after the first 45 minutes saw hosts Vitoria go 1-0 up through Denilson’s goal in the Bahia State Championship (Campeonato Baiano) game on Sunday, February 18, 2018.

Tempers became frayed when Bahia’s Vinicius netted an equalizer for the visitors from the penalty spot on 50 minutes.

It was also learnt that after leveling the score, the striker wheeled away to celebrate behind the goal, where he suggestively thrust his hips towards the crowd.

The striker’s celebration did not go down well with the opposition players, who rushed to confront him, thus, sparking a mass brawl.

Both sets of players piled in, punches were thrown, and – after a delay of 16 minutes to restore order – the referee sent off eight players.

Play did eventually restart, but when Vitoria had a further two players sent off, reducing the match to a six-a-side format, the referee was forced to abandon the fixture, with Bahia likely to be awarded a 3-0 forfeit victory.

Access Bank, 5 Other Banks Meet CBN’s Dividend Payout Rule

Featured Image

A circular of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on dividend payout by commercial banks and discount houses has been analysed based on the performances and balance sheet positions of all lenders.

According to a report released on Monday, February 19, by Afrinvest West Africa, an investment and research firm, only six banks have met the apex bank’s minimum requirement for Capital Adequacy Ration (CAR) and Non-Performing Loans.

ALSO READ: CBN Prohibits Nigerian Banks With Huge Bad Loans From Paying Dividends

They are: Access Bank, Zenith Bank, Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB), First City Monument Bank (FCMB), Wema Bank and United Bank for Africa (UBA).

Hence these banks are excluded from the restrictions on dividend payment.

The Nation reports that the firm stressed that many lenders will not be able to pay dividends based on their capital reserves as well as the proportion of Non-Performing Loans (NPLs) in a bid to forestall any threats to customer deposits in the system.

On the criteria that require lenders to meet the minimum CAR before dividend payout, the research firm said all the banks under its coverage, save for Unity and Union, met the minimum requirement stipulated by the CBN.

“For Unity, the current CAR (as at nine month 2017) is unavailable while Union Bank had a CAR of 13.3 per cent (below CBN requirement of 15 per cent in first half of 2017). We envisage Union’s CAR will improve by fiscal year 2017, adjusting for the capital raise of N50 billion via rights issue in 2017,” it said.

On another requirement that banks and discount houses that have a Composite Risk Rating (CRR) of “High” or a Non-Performing Loan (NPL) ratio of above 10 per cent shall not be allowed to pay dividend, the report said only FBN Holdings has a non-performing loan ratio above 10 per cent which should disqualify the entity from paying dividend.

“However, given the Holding company structure operated by FBN Holdings, analysts believe dividend can be paid from earnings of subsidiaries, other than the bank,” it said.

It is understood that Diamond Bank, Fidelity Bank, Stanbic IBTC, Sterling and Union Bank are restricted to a maximum of 30% maximum payout ratio, with respective NPL ratio above five per cent but below 10%.

Nigeria’s Crude Oil Production Falls In January

Featured Image

Nigeria’s crude oil production fell by 8,100 barrels per day (bpd) from 1.828 mbpd it recorded in December, to 1.819mbpd in January 2018.

The decrease may not be unconnected with the various line breaches caused by vandals in the later part of 2017, which led to the shut-in of production in many fields.

Nigerian Guardian reports that the development also had impact on the total Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC’s) oil production, which averaged 32.30 mbpd in January, representing a minor decrease of 8,000 tbpd over the previous month.

According to OPEC in its latest oil market report, while production mainly decreased in Venezuela, and Angola, partially offset by Iraq, Saudi Arabia, and Libya, Nigeria has continued to experience pipeline disruption, impacting negatively on its production volumes.

For example, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) disclosed that a total 90 pipeline points were vandalised, 41 points failed to be welded, and another six were either ruptured or clamped in November 2017.

The NNPC also said that 136 pipeline points were destroyed in the month under review while Port Harcourt Calabar-Aba and Aba-Enugu pipeline segment accounted for almost 67 per cent of the affected points.

It stated: “About 195,000bopd remained shut-in for the entire month of October 2017, due to slow recoveries from some wells and repairs on the 42- inch export line and fuel gas line.

“A plant trip a result of gas detected caused a drop in production for a day at Akpo Terminal. The production shut-in was 22,000 barrels. Production also dropped for eight days due to shut-in of some wells as a result of request from NLNG for Akpo to cut off gas export due to operational issues. The production shut-in was 61,000bpd. Another 83,000 barrels of production was also shut-in for a day due to intervention and preventive maintenance activities.“The Trans Forcados Pipeline was shut down for eight days due to leaks in the Oteghele and Yeye axis with the loss of approximately 200,000bopd of production.”

Meanwhile, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, has assured that the Federal government is targeting an increase to 3mbpd.

He said: “Investment is needed to maintain essential work, just to get fields online and cap them will require an average of about $10 billion per year in investments over the next three to four years.”

Court Frees Woman Accused Of Murdering Her Boyfriend

Featured Image

A High Court sitting in Maitama, Abuja on Monday discharged and acquitted a 26-year -old woman Sarah Ogah, charged with murdering her boyfriend, Friday Shehu.

NAN reports that the prosecution had on April 12, 2013, arraigned Sarah, on one count of charge of culpable homicide.

But while delivering his judgment, the presiding judge, Justice Peter Affen, discharged Ogah for lack of diligent prosecution.

The judge held that the prosecution failed to prove his case beyond reasonable doubts, saying that the two prosecution witnesses were not present at the scene of the alleged crime.

The judge said their evidence as to how the deceased met his death or what directly caused it was controvertible and not admissible under section 126 (a) of the Evidence Act, 2011 to prove the cause of the death of the deceased.

He held that the only direct evidence as to what caused the death of the deceased was the evidence of defendant herself.

Okeke held that the defendant’s evidence was the only eyewitness account of what transpired between the two parties.

He added that the prosecution did not lead any evidence to successfully contradict this, saying that his attempt to do so, was resisted by the defendant who was resolute in her answers.

The defendant consistently held that her late boyfriend “was armed and wanted to harm her and she took off the kitchen knife to scare him away”.

The judge held that by the foregoing available evidence in respect of what caused the fight and how it took place, ”it is evident that the refusal by a lady to marry a man or park one’s belongings should be a cause fight.

“The deceased holding a cutlass and screwdriver with a threat to kill her and approaching her in their room so armed. It is reasonable that the defendant had an apprehension of peril or danger to her life or great bodily harm. In the circumstance, given that the incidence occurred in their room with no one present, she cannot be said to have a reasonable mode of escape. By the reasons of the foregoing findings, the defendant had been able to make out a case for self-defense, with no evidence by the prosecution to contradict this.’’

Okeke held that as a result, “the defendant cannot be found to be guilty of culpable homicide as charged. In the circumstance, the defendant is discharged and acquitted,” he held.
