Benitez Slams Poor Newcastle

Featured Image

Newcastle manager, Rafael Benitez has slammed his men, after they lost a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 against Bournemouth.

Newcastle were in the driving seat, after Dwight Gayle made Begovic pay for two goalkeeping errors.

Bournemouth found a lifeline 10 minutes from time, as Adam Smith scored with a thumping effort.

Gosling scored in the 89th minute, courtesy of Nathan Ake to restore parity. Jonjo Shelvey missed an earlier chance, before Bournemouth equalised and Benitez wished his side had done more.

“It is always difficult when you have a team that is pushing at home but we had the chances to finish the game and didn’t do it, we have to improve on that,” Benitez said.

“We were in control of the game and had a clear idea of how to do things.

“They didn’t have too many chances, I would say that the chance that we missed [Shelvey’s] and then the goal they scored quickly after, that changed everything. After that, we lost control. We have lost two points.”

Zidane Hails Ronaldo For Benzema Gesture

Featured Image

Cristiano Ronaldo gave up on getting a hat trick to give Benzema a late penalty, earning praise from Zinedine Zidane.

Benzema’s poor run in front of goal continued, and he was booed by the fans after scuffing the chance to score the opener.

However, the 30-year-old went on to provide two assists, supplying Ronaldo and Bale. And after the Welshman was fouled in the box, Ronaldo gave Benzema the spot kick, giving up on a third goal.

“I’m happy for Cristiano’s nice gesture with Karim,” Zidane told a post-match news conference, having watched his much-vaunted ‘BBC’ forward line all score in the same match for the first time this season.

“This shows he is a team player. Karim deserved this, to score a goal, as he had played a very good game.”

Matic: We Can Still Do Big Things

Featured Image

Manchester United midfielder, Nemanja Matic believes the club can still achieve big things despite the PL title looking beyond reach.

The Red Devils are 16 points behind table topping Manchester City, but that could reduce to 13, if they win against Chelsea on Sunday. And City face Arsenal on the same day in the Carabao Cup final.

Manchester United are still in the Champions League and are also in the quarterfinals of the FA Cup. And Matic believes they can still achieve something.

And Matic has plenty of hope of a successful conclusion to the campaign, the Serbia international telling United Review: “I think that we have improved.

“Of course, in the Premier League, it is difficult to win every game, but I think step by step we have improved and in the future I believe, as a team, we can do big things together.

“I’m happy to be with the team and how we are working together. I’m sure we can do something this season and in the future for sure.

“We have to be honest and say we have had some very good games, but we have also had some bad games. We have to improve together. We have the Champions League and the FA Cup still to play for.

“To win the league is going to be very hard as we know because the gap is very big, but we have to fight until the end and we will see what we can do.”

#BBNaija 2018 Day 26: Miracle Wins The Friday Night Arena Games

Featured Image

Miracle seems to be on a winning streak in the #bbnaija house as he copped yet another win, after winning the Wager and the Head of House title, he scooped another victory during the Arena Games.

As the weeks go by in the #bbnaija hoise, it seems Biggie has decided to increase the Game’s difficulties and this time around, he added no less than five challenges for the #bbnaija Housemates to complete in a record ten minutes.

Big brother had designed the Game for Housemates to make the best use of speed, agility and balance under pressure.

The obstacle course kept ascending, from the relatively simple one of walking on a balance beam, to running on platforms, then pushing a wheelbarrow which gave rise to a few memorable funny faces from the #bbnaija Housemates.

The next level included climbing up and over a net obstacle before crawling under a net that landed into an air mattress covered in flour and feathers.

The #bbnaija Housemates seemed up to the task and they were keen on giving their best to the Game. Even Nina and Lolu who had what could be described as a slippery time on the balance beam, picked themselves up really quickly and started all over again with a renewed determination.

With all the #bbnaija housemates covered in flour and feathers on the chin, face, hair, nostrils, knees and skin, they were exhilarated and relieved that Biggie ordered them to go take a shower. It seems they were a little bit grateful for Biggie’s gruelling morning fitness routines that seemed to pay off during the games.

From the side benches where he was seated, Miracle seemed to be riding the wave of his third success, as he was applauded by all as soon as Big brother announced him as the winner.

With Miracle awaiting his reward for yet another win, we wait to see if his winning streak continues next week.

Neville: Lukaku Could Get The Bench Next

Featured Image

Former Manchester United defender, Gary Neville feels the next player at United to follow Paul Pogba to the bench could be Romelu Lukaku, as he sees an opening up front for Alexis.

Jose Mourinho has shown he can bench key players , following the benching of Paul Pogba for a few matches.

And Neville feels Alexis could be moved up front, as a replacement for the struggling Lukaku, and Rashford brought in.

The former United defender told Sky Sports: “My view at the moment is that the one person who is under some pressure is Romelu Lukaku, in terms of his form, and also that Sanchez could go up front, because I’m not sure he’s suited to the right. That may allow Marcus to come back into the team.

“I think Lukaku has done well this season, but I think there comes a point whereby if both he and Alexis Sanchez are not performing to their best, which they are not at the moment, you’d think Sanchez will be moved up top and Lukaku may come out of the team for a few matches.

“It’s not because he’s a bad player, but he could come out of the team, freshen up, see the game differently, and then come back in when others have had a go.”

Andreas Christensen Can Become Chelsea’s Captain- Antonio Conte

Featured Image

Antonio Conte believes that Andreas Christensen has the potential to become Chelsea’s captain.

Andreas Christensen returned to Chelsea last summer following a loan spell at Borussia Monchengladbach, and the 21-year-old has made 31 appearances in all competitions for his English club this season.

Conte has said that Christensen “is having a fantastic season”, and the Italian has tipped the Denmark international to become Chelsea captain.

“During your career you can make a lot of mistakes. If I had to speak about my mistakes from my career we would be here all day,” Conte told reporters.

“Christensen is having a fantastic season and showing great maturity. For me, apart from his mistake, his performance [against Barcelona] was wonderful. I trust Christensen. I think this player is a present player for Chelsea and can be here for 10, 12 years. I think he can be captain.”

#BBNaija 2018 Day 26: Housemates Nominate Their Favourite Pairs

Featured Image

Big brother seems to be all about giving the #bbnaija housemates endless surprises and this time around, he decided to give them 30 minutes to come up with the names of their two preferred Pairs.

With the current happenings in the #bbnaija house, it surely isnt a small feat to nominate four people altogether, giving the apparent divisions that has seen sizzles and sputters plague them over the past couple of days.

Upon receiving Biggie’s instructions, the #bbnaija Housemates left the lounge in Pairs to retreat in a different area of the House and strategize. The hardest part for them was to leave grievances aside and come together on a common set of names.

Ever since Big brother’s most recent reshuffling, the #bbnaija Housemates don’t seem to be gelling together like they used to, and they may need to work much harder at building consensus to work together.

Back to choosing their favourite #bbnaija housemates, a voluble Alex started talking only for Tobi to hush her and pull her aside from eavesdroppers to a corner of the sofa.

It was Tobi from the Tolex (Tobi and Alex) pair who chose Mito (Miracle and Anto) and Tena (Teddy A and Nina). He made no attempt to try and salvage his ladylove Cee-C who is paired with Lolu (Ceelo).

In the upper bedroom, Lolu tried his utmost to pacify an embittered Cee-C from her early catfight with Ifu. As usual, Cee-C wouldn’t let go yet they managed to agree on Mito and Bamco (Bambam and Rico) before talking at cross purposes again.

The Head of House Pair Mito (Miracle and Anto) retired to the luxury suite, emerging from their closed session with Bamco and Gelah (Angel and Ahneeka) on their lips. Here again Miracle made no effort to try and save his squeeze Nina, but their decision may have been influenced by Miracle’s disregard of Teddy A.

The same thing seemed to happen with Nina and Teddy as they moved to the closet and put forward the names of Tolex and Gelah. Neither Nina nor Teddy named as preferred Housemates their love interests – Bambam and Miracle.

Yet in the kitchen, as Rico was grating carrots with Bambam by her sides slicing potatoes for dinner, they casually dropped the names of Gelah and Tena, if only for Teddy A.

The duo of Lifu (Leo and Ifu) came together pretty easily on Bamco and Tena, and Tena picked Tolex and Gelah. Representing Gelah, Ahneeka named Tena and Mito.

At the end, perhaps as means of keeping the suspense as high as possible, Biggie informed them that the results would only be made known after the live Eviction show on Sunday.

Claude Puel Admits Leicester City Didn’t Do Enough To Beat Stoke City

Featured Image

Leicester City Manager Claude Puel has acknowledged that his team did not do enough to beat Stoke City in Saturday’s 1-1 draw at the King Power Stadium.

Leicester City went a goal down on the stroke of half time, and only levelled through a Jack Butland mistake on 70 minutes which yielded an own goal.

Leicester dominated possession against the Potters and mustered nine shots on target as well as winning 13 corners, and Puel bemoaned his side’s lack of clinical edge in the final third.

“Not enough to win today,” the Frenchman told BBC Sport. “We could have, but we could also have lost so perhaps a draw is fair. Their goalkeeper made some good saves, but we also conceded chances.

“I thought we started well, with intensity, but it became too slow to find space. It was better second half, but without a clinical edge or a little luck to find a winning goal.”

It’s Unfortunate Nemanja Matic Signed For Manchester United- Antonio Conte

Featured Image

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte admits it is “unfortunate” that Nemanja Matic is now a Manchester United player.

Nemanja Matic played a key role in the Blues’ Premier League title success last season before being allowed to complete a £40m summer move to rivals United.

Speaking ahead of Chelsea’s trip to Old Trafford on Super Sunday, Conte said: “About this player, I can talk only really well because he played with us last season.

“I think he was one of the key players in winning the title. Now Matic, unfortunately, is playing for Manchester United. I wish for him the best. Not on Sunday, but in the future.”

Conte said last summer that selling the player was a “big loss” for the champions, and asked why Matic was allowed to join a potential title rival, the Italian replied: “In the past we have already managed this topic.

“I don’t want to come back and speak about the past because I think it’s not important, not interesting for us.”

#BBNaija 2018 Day 26: The Week Ends On A Bitter And Sweet Note

Featured Image

The vibe in the #bbnaija house for most parts of the morning of day 26was much lighter and more upbeat than some of the events that transpired from the night of day 25. Despite the fact the the #bbnaija housemates won the wager, they still managed to shed a few tears.

It seems like Cee-C couldn’t handle the low key silent treatment Tobi has been serving lately. Her discomfort lead to a lengthy conversation between her and Tobi in what seemed like an attempt to iron out their differences.

It however seems the allegations made ran deeper than the cracks that are visible. Tobi simply wanted a sincere apology but failed to voice that out and Cee-C on her part seemed unable to guess what he wants.

The #bbnaija Housemates were still caught up in the baby hype when Big Brother introduced the Safe Sex Awareness Task as an extension of parenting and responsibility.

They were charged with creating a talk show and dissecting the topic using real like challenges and theoretical examples as well as compose a song to further relay the message.

Despite the fact that the #bbnaija housemates were not fully invested, they were able to bag yet another Wager win, making this their second consecutive one; following two consecutive losses.

It seems there is a pattern the #bbnaija housemates follow as there wasnt much celebrations following Biggie’s criticism but the stars aligned in their favour this time around, despite the fact that it looked like they expected to lose. perhaps because they expected to lose.

As the mini celebrations continued, Cee-C and Tobi excused themselves from the group and continued where they’d left off during the day. They both expressed their minds, with Cee-C almost shedding some tears and it all was well as they hugged it out and Tobi promised to be more considerate of Cee-C’s feelings.

The #bbnaija Housemates continued with their conversations and feasted the early morning hours away until big brother decides to put them to another round of activities.

Nigerians Agonise Over Dirty, Shortage Of Smaller Naira Notes

Featured Image

The quantity of dirty and unfit naira notes in circulation and scarcity of small denominations of N10, N20, N50 and N100 notes, is becoming a major concern to Nigerians, especially those engaged in commercial transactions.

These days, even over-the-counter and Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) transactions are disbursing dirty and unfit notes, just as commercial banks and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) trade blames over who is responsible, directly or indirectly, for the situation.

More worrisome to banks’ customers is that ATMs have not only become outlets for these dirty and sometimes, unfit notes, but are also deliberately mixing them with few new notes and once dispensed, even the same bank do not accept them back when presented in the banking hall.

A customer of one of the top three banks in the country, who identified himself simply as Sampson, told The Guardian how he withdrew money across the counter and hurriedly left, but later discovered that two bundles of N500 notes were almost unfit.

“When I brought it back to them, they rejected the money and denied ever paying the money to me. I avoided creating a scene in the banking hall and could not push further because I was in a hurry to join a bus coming back to Lagos from Enugu,” he said.

Taofeek of Festac Town, Lagos, also told The Guardian that he went to deposit money in another top three bank, but the bulk teller rejected some notes and told him that if she collected them, the amount would be deducted from her salary.

“The notes were weak and some dirty, but the numbers are there and that was how I collected them, too, from others.

“In fact, one of my customers withdrew some of the notes in my very presence from the ATM and paid me. Why are they doing this?” he queried.

The Guardian’s poll of customers in 24 branches of 11 different banks, including the top five banks, across Lagos, showed that there are more of dirty notes and some near unfit ones than clean notes in many banking transactions these days.

Another bulk teller said that his boss has told staff that the CBN charges banks for the unfit notes when returned for replacement.

But spokesman of the apex bank spokesman, Mr. Isaac Okorafor, has consistently debunked this, saying banks have deliberately refused to sort the dirty and unfit notes and return them to CBN and instead choose to mix them up and when this happens, it will be sorted by the CBN and the banks charged as such.

“They are playing tricks. They will see unfit notes and re-issue them again, because they don’t want to make investments in sorting the money.

“It is their duty to return unfit notes to us and we will replace them with new ones.

“If banks sort the money before bringing to CBN, we don’t charge them, but if they don’t, we will sort and charge them.

“It is only when they mix up the unfit and good ones together, which is what they do, that we charge them for sorting.

“But it is our duty to issue new notes in place of the unfit and that we have been doing,” he said.

He advised any person with such complaints to direct it to CBN’s consumer protection department through cpd@cbn.gov.ng, stating the name of the bank.

Okorafor reiterated that the problem for rejection should not be the dirtiness of money, but if the numbers on the money are complete, adding: “If the numbers are complete, no bank has any right to reject the currency, no matter how dirty it is.”

Across the country, shortage of small denominations is gradually affecting commercial activities and transactions, thereby affecting the economy of the middle and low-income class.

It is also breeding disagreement between service providers and customers, and “marriage of inconvenience” between transporters and passengers.

Happiness, a tricycle operator in Enugu, charges his passengers according to their distance. Most operators of tricycle charge N50 per trip. However, “it is always a problem, especially, in the morning hours, to get passengers, who would pay you the exact fare,” he said.

Asked how he has been coping with the development, he stated that he either abandons the passenger with the N50 note or look for those he would drop on charter.

He told The Guardian that getting lower dominations of the naira is now a difficult thing, adding that in some cases, they pair passengers to enable them settle for a higher denomination before they are taken to their destinations.

Michael Dibia, a resident of Ahoada, explained that the scarcity of smaller denominations have led to increase in the price of foodstuffs and transportation.

“I have observed of recent that you could barely buy spices used for cooking soup at N5 or even N10. I blame this on the non-availability of smaller denominations. Most traders prefer to sell them at N20 or N50 and above. Before a customer buys something in the market these days, the seller will ask whether the customer has the required money. Very often, the customers, like me, have to compromise to buy what I don’t intend to buy because of change. This is affecting the cost of living for people like us,” he said.

Similarly, Tonye Oruwari, who owns a grocery in Port Harcourt, stated that in the absence of small denomination currencies, the grocery shops have evolved a unique way to address the issue by offering chewing gums and sweets against balance, in place of the small denomination currencies.

Also in Kwara State, while some traders complained of the scarcity, they agreed that it had assisted in swelling their profit margin.

Alhaja Afusat Wakilu popularly called “Iya Azeez” at Lanjoorin Street, Murtala Mohammed Way, Ilorin, said many of her customers often forfeit their balances with her without realising the magnitude of gains conceded to her.

“For instance, if you buy a sachet of water that used to be N10, few months ago, some customers would insist on getting their N10 balance while many others would not even wait for it. The implications of this is that such buyers without them knowing has added over 100 per cent gains to my profits margin,” she said.

This has forced many traders to go to churches on Sundays, after services, to look for these denominations, from offerings, to enable them transact their businesses conveniently.

A source from CBN, who pleaded anonymity, said the concern now should be more about preserving the currency and the law enforcement agencies being alert to their duty, as notes are being destroyed by the activities of currency hawkers, who make brisk business at various party centres across the country, particularly, Lagos State.

Investigations showed that the sale of the clean notes for older ones currently goes for as high as 20 per cent of the value being exchanged, that is, exchanging N800 new notes for N1000 old notes.

The source cited CBN Act 2007, Section 21, sub-section 3 and 4, which said: “For the avoidance of doubt, spraying of, dancing or matching on the naira or any note issued by the Bank (CBN) during social occasions or otherwise howsoever, shall constitute an abuse and defacing of the naira or such note and shall be punishable under Sub-section (1) of this section.

“It shall also be an offence punishable under sub-section (1) of this section for any person to hawk, sell or otherwise trade in the naira notes, coins or any other note issued by the bank.”

He urged Nigerians to embrace the alternative payment solutions being provided, such as the Point of Sale (PoS), Internet and mobile money services to reduce cash-based transactions and preserve the available notes.

Data Capturing! FRSC Issues New Directive For Driver’s License Renewal

Featured Image

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has said that there is no need for data capturing while applying for  renewal of driver’s licence.

Mr Hyginus Omeje, the FRSC Lagos State Sector Commander said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Saturday, adding that the agency departed from the old system long time ago.

“I want to use this opportunity to tell motorists that they can renew their licence without going through capture.

“The choice of coming to capture is yours, as long as we have your data base at the initial stage and its already in the system, you don’t really need to be captured any longer,” he said.

Omeje said that there is provision to bypass capture in the new process of renewal of licence.

The FRSC boss however, noted that recapturing of data would only happen when  people want to change their  passport photographs or change some variables stated at the initial stage in the data.

“The whole essence of renewal is to update your records. You might have changed your residential address and all other variables except date of birth which is constant.

“And it is possible that somewhere somehow you had an accident that has given you mark or scars on your face, that has not been there before and if you don’t do the update,  of not going for capture, you may be embarrassed when you go to the embassy,” Omeje noted.

What Is President Buhari Doing With The $74 Million Repatriated Malabu Oil Scam Money?

What Is President Buhari Doing With The $74 Million Repatriated Malabu Oil Scam Money? By Erasmus Ikhide

CLICK here to read more opinion articles

Nigerians and the global community are unsettled with the compromising silence of President Muhammasu Buhari and the Nigerian traditional media over the repatriation of $73.3, which forms part of the Malabu oil deal. This is mainly one of the reasons President Buhari’s circuit show of anti-graft gambit has been overwhelmingly submerged in total commendation.

This piece was written by Erasmus Ikhide. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

Quite condescendingly, Mr. Buhari led-government which has been buoyant negatively with false propaganda has failed or bluntly refused to brief Nigerians on how it wishes to plough up the money into the wobbling economy — nearly a month after the money has been repatriated and deposited into the Central Bank.

I can’t agree less that the anti-corruption campaign can only make meaning impression if there is procedural openness, total disclosures of assets recovered so far, followed by naming those behind the pauperization of the entire nation. Naming and shaming policy is one of the strategies adopted in China which has now lead to near eradication of corruption in that country.

Nigerians need to know what the APC government under Buhari’s anti-graft wishes to do with the money. We want to know whether the N2 billion-plus will be partly used to fix the decrepit hospitals across the country or will simply evaporation the way the previous ones did. Nigerians will like to know if it will be expended on the virtually nonexistent roads where 2,000 plus soul have been lost — according to the Federal Road Safety statistics — between December 2017 and now or it will be use to fix next year’s presidential election for the government in power.

Interestingly, a civil right activist and the Executive Director of Africa Network for Environment and Economic Justice (ANEEJ) Rev. David Ugolor who has been at the forefront — signing agreement on behalf of civil society for the repatriation of stolen wealth in foreign land, and the precursor of utilisation of the same funds back home enumerates how such money can be used to enhance the human conditions of the Nigerian masses.

“The recovered stolen asset can benefit the victims of poor governance by providing resources to increase spending in the education and health sectors. The current poor funding for these sectors have increased the human rights problem in these countries.

“To reverse the situation it be a great relief for the poor if a transparent framework could be established for proper utilization of the return assets. The recovered stolen asset can also help address the problem of impunity and encourage government to deliver on their commitment to ensure that justice prevail. We must not allowed crime to pay. The money can benefit the people through the implementation of Sustainable development goals”, Rev. Ugolor said.

The merest engagement of assets recovery and subsequent prudent utilisation of same at best or re-looting it at worse, is not sufficient deterrent a measure that can prevent daredevil looters from pillaging the commonwealth. Nigerians want to know those behind the criminal involvement of dubious deals that have created bad image for the country, what become of those who took it upon themselves to destroy the country with abominable fraud. They want to see that appropriate punishment is melted out to those who have taken the nation backward.

Under President Buhari’s leadership, events have shown how enmeshed corruption is with running of the country. The biggest jolt to the catchphrase and crackdown on graft campaign has been that his ministers and close aides have become more corrupt than those his government elects to prosecute. Mr. Buhari should fan and flush out the likes of Mr. Malami.

The Anttorney General of the Federal and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami (SAN) who do not deserve the job has been pressing the president to abandon the case for obvious selfish reason. Sadly, Mr. Malami has justified his letter advising President Muhammadu Buhari to order the termination of the charges instituted against the immediate-past AGF, Mr. Mohammed Adoke (SAN), and others, in respect of Malabu oil scam. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission had filed three sets of charges of fraud and money laundering against Adoke, a former Minister of Petroleum, Dan Etete, and others in connection with the $1.1bn Malabu scam.

President Buhari has no option than to take a firmer decision over the alleged scam revolving around the highly lucrative Nigerian oil well, Oil Processing Licence  245, originally offered under controversial circumstances to Malabu Oil and Gas Ltd. by the then Gen. Sani Abacha military regime in 1998. Interestingly, the (EFCC) had alleged that the Nigerian government was defrauded in the alleged shady transactions in the chain of transfers that later gave away the ownership of the OPL 245 to the oil giants, Shell and Agip.

It’s not enough for President Buhari to encourage the anti-graft agency through written letter to continue the prosecution of Malabu scam Oil deal when the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice openly wrote the president for stoppage of prosecution. For justice to be served or seen to have been served in the end, Mr. Malami has to been ease out of that office. Nigerians have no faith in him, neither do we believe that the Attorney General has not sold out to the Malabu Oil Mafias.

The anti-graft campaign of the federal government will be a failure without involving flurry of educational activities in its support. Nigerians must be made to understand that the anti-graft war is not mere showmanship, sectional and politically motivated. President Buhari’s administration should thoroughly prosecute past and present corrupt government officials who are obstructing the flow of Justice. The president should disclose to Nigerians how he hopes to spend the repatriated loot so far recovered and his plans to jail those involved. Without that, his anti-corruption campaign will remain a mere motion without movement.

France

Paul Pogba continues to dominate headlines. Left out of last weekend’s FA Cup win over Huddersfield Town – despite Manchester United boss Mourinho saying he would start – reports have emerged that there is a clause in Pogba’s contract allowing him to return to Juventus for €60m (£53m). (L’Equipe)

Fresh doubts have been cast over the future of Manchester United forward Anthony Martial after it was revealed the 22-year-old is yet to be offered a new contract at Old Trafford. The French international will be a free agent next summer. He has scored 11 times in 37 appearances in all competitions for United this term but is not a regular starter under Mourinho. (RMC)

Spain

A major overhaul is expected at the Bernabeu this summer, regardless of how Real Madrid finish the campaign. One player who could be part of a summer recruitment drive to get them back on top is Lazio star Sergej Milinkovic-Savic. The Serbian, 22, is under contract until 2021 and would cost Real €170m (£150m). (Marca)

Milan goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma is one possibility for Paris Saint-Germain this summer as they look to upgrade their goalkeeping options. The 18-year-old stopper was a Real Madrid transfer target last summer but eventually signed a new deal to remain with the Rossoneri until 2021. (AS)

Former Barcelona transfer target Angel Di Maria wants to return to La Liga this summer. The Argentine, who played for Real Madrid between 2010 and 2014, is out of favour at Paris Saint-Germain and fancies returning to Spain. He has been subject of Atletico Madrid transfer rumours. (Don Balon)

Another player who is the subject of Atletico interest is Lyon striker Mariano Diaz. The Dominican Republic international joined the French side from Real Madrid last summer and has 16 goals in 32 appearances in all competitions. (AS)

Barcelona have cooled their interest in Lyon skipper and talisman Nabil Fekir. The 24-year-old has been in inspired form this season, bagging 21 goals in all competitions. (Sport)

Italy

Internazionale midfielder Rafinha insists he wants to remain with the Nerazzurri next season after his loan from Barcelona expires. The Brazilian arrived in January on a deal until the end of the current campaign but is keen to extend the agreement. “I did not come here thinking about recovering the form and then go back to Barcelona, I want to stay, then obviously my ransom will depend on Inter,” he said. (Calciomercato)

Juventus’ injury problems look set to get worse with new winger Federico Bernardeschi could be set to undergo an operation. The Italian schemer injured his knee in the derby win over Torino and, if physiotherapy does not cure the problem, he will undergo surgery. “In 20 days he will be re-evaluated, if the therapy has performed well, otherwise he will have to be operated on,” coach Max Allegri confirmed. (Corriere dello Sport)

Germany

Former Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon has revealed Pin Zahavi, the new agent of Bayern Munich forward Robert Lewandowski, has an excellent relationship with the La Liga side. Lewandowski is reportedly keen on a move to the Bernabeu and has appointed Zahavi as his new agent with a mandate to secure a move to the Spanish giants. “Real has an excellent relationship with Zahavi,” Calderon told Bild. “I know him very well. He is very professional, doing his job excellent. He knows the market well, and he treats his players very well.” (Sport Bild)

Another Bayern player whose future had been up in the air is winger Serge Gnabry. The former Arsenal youngster has been on loan at Hoffenheim this season but he will return to the Allianz Arena for the start of next season instead of extending the loan agreement. “Serge will return to FC Bayern in the summer,” agent Hannes Winzer said. “He then played for two years in the Bundesliga, got to know different systems, philosophies and coaches, plus Premier League experience. The timing is very good.” (Sport Bild)

Portugal

Portimonense winger Shoya Nakajima, 23, has made a big impression in Liga NOS this season, scoring nine and assisting a further five in just 19 outings for the newly-promoted side. That form has not gone unnoticed by Bundesliga sides Borussia Dortmund and Stuttgart who could pay the Japanese wideman’s €20m release clause this summer. (A Bola)

Boniek: Zielinski Better Than De Bruyne

Featured Image

Kevin De Bruyne has been hailed as a star and a future Ballon d’Or winner by pundits and coaches alike, but Boniek believes the Belgium international is not as good as Piotr Zielinski.

The Poland international midfielder has impressed for Napoli this season, scoring four goals, as they sit atop the table in a bid to win a first Scudetto since 1989-90. Sarri, Napoli’s manager has compared the 23-year-old to De Bruyne.

Zielinski is regarded as one of the brightest talents in European football and Boniek, head of the Polish Football Association, already rates the 23-year-old above De Bruyne.

“He will be the next De Bruyne? I think Zielinski already has more quality than De Bruyne,” Boniek said to Corriere dello Sport.

“They are different kind of players, of course, but they have the same ability to leave their mark on the team. I think that he will become a top player.

“He was 16, I went to see a Poland youth international match and thought: ‘This is an extraordinary player’.”

Jan Vertonghen Has Become One Of The Best Defenders In The World- Mauricio Pochettino

Featured Image

Jan Vertonghen has stopped sulking and improved his mentality to become one of the best centre-backs in Europe, according to his manager Mauricio Pochettino.

Mauricio Pochettino said Jan Vertonghen’s “mental aspect,” particularly his body language, has changed since they started working together in 2014 and he described the 30-year-old as the club’s most-consistent defender.

Jan Vertonghen is one of just 14 players to have played every minute in the Premier League this season

After a fine maiden season in England, Vertonghen struggled under coaches Andre Villas-Boas and Tim Sherwood in 2013-14 and footage of him lounging against the wall of the tunnel ahead of a 4-0 defeat at Liverpool epitomised Tottenham’s apathy pre-Pochettino.

“He has improved in an aspect that was so important for him — the mental aspect,” Pochettino said. “Now he is a complete centre-back. We have worked a lot together to reach the level that he is at today.

“I remember his body language when I watched the game against Liverpool when [Luis] Suarez scored, the season before we came.

“He was slouched in the tunnel,” said Pochettino, who stood up to imitate Vertonghen’s relaxed stance.

“When I came, I told him: ‘Why are you like that? You are here for a battle! You cannot show this body language — you are a warrior!’ It is difficult after showing this energy to go out and take part in a battle and fight.

“We worked a lot on this aspect and, yes, it is true that we clash a lot in training because he is clever and always has an argument and a reason why, but in the end I appreciate a lot his efforts in giving the team what we expect from him.

“It is good to praise him because he is a very good player who sometimes does not get valued enough.

“I am so proud that he has achieved this level today. Not only on the pitch but off the pitch. In my opinion he’s one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League and in Europe.”

“He has unbelievably quality, physical condition, technique,” Pochettino added. “He is so strong, he looks like a 20-year-old because when he runs he is fast, he is like my new dog — a Rhodesian Ridgeback!

“It is easy for him to run. Physicality is his talent. It is genetic, it is his natural condition. He is an athlete. It is up to him but he could play until he is 40.

“The club believe that he needs to be rewarded. He’s one of the players that deserves [a new contract].”
