Senate, Presidency Clash Over Peace Corps Bill

Featured Image

The Nigerian Senate has drawn a battle-line with the presidency following President Muhammadu Buhari’s decision to withhold assent to the bill establishing Peace Corps of Nigeria.

This followed the adoption of a Point of Order raised by Sen. Dino Melaye during plenary.

Buhari Refuses To Approve Peace Corps Bill

Relying on the Senate rules, Melaye urged the Senate to revisit the bill with a view to veto the president if he failed to rescind his rejection of the bill.

President Buhari had cited duplication of duty and funding challenges in declining assent to the Nigerian Peace Corps (Establishment) Bill, 2017 recently passed by the National Assembly.

However, Melaye said that the bill should be given priority by Buhari.

“The same thing happened when the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) was to be established; there was also the same complaint that there was no money and all of that.

“But today we can see the advantages of the civil defence and how they have helped in safeguarding the government infrastructure.

“About 5.5 billion dollars was borrowed from euro bond; what part of it will the youths of this country benefit from.

“About one billion dollars is to be spent on security and how does this affect the youth of this country.

“Without fear or favour, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in 16 years, borrowed N6 trillion and this government in three years, has borrowed N11 trillion but there is no specific programme that will empower the youth.

“Also, N500 billion was earmarked for the social investment programme of the Federal Government but we have not seen any impact.

“If the Peace Corps is given an opportunity to exist, thousands will be employed and this will help to fight unemployment in this country.

“We may need to write Mr president to review his position if not we have the power on behalf of the Nigerian youths who voted us to veto him so that people will become the ultimate beneficiaries of this bill.

“The youth of this country must be given priority and they must be respected,’’ Melaye said.

Arsenal Supporters Trust To Meet Ivan Gazidis Over Arsene Wenger’s Future At The Club

Featured Image

The Arsenal Supporters Trust (AST) will meet with Gunners chief executive Ivan Gazidis at the Emirates Stadium this weekend to argue their case for the sacking of manager Arsene Wenger, according to Evening Standard

A poll of the AST’s 1,000 members revealed that 88% believe the Frenchman should be sacked due to the team’s underwhelming season and dismal run of form, and the organisation is due to present the results of the survey to Gazidis

Arsenal have suffered five defeats in their last six matches in all competitions, a run of form that has cost them the EFL Cup and left them 13 points outside of the Champions League positions, putting Wenger under increased pressure to step down.

“This poll of Arsenal fans shows the overwhelming view is that Arsene Wenger should leave the club this summer,” an AST spokesperson is quoted as saying.

“The responses to our survey showed huge affection and respect for Arsene but also the view that he is no longer taking Arsenal forward.

“Our message to the club is that they must be proactive and take the decision sooner rather than later.

“An early decision would both ensure that we are well prepared for next season and also mean that fans could use the final games of the season to give him the send-off he deserves.”

France

Long-term Liverpool transfer target Thomas Lemar appears to be closing in on a move to Anfield. The Reds tried to sign the 2017 Ligue 1 title winner last summer but Monaco rejected their off. Arsenal made a last-ditch bid but were, again, unsuccessful. Now, according to reports, Liverpool and Monaco have agreed a deal in principle to bring the 22-year-old French international to the Premier League. (Le 10 Sport)

Spain

Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane does not want to sign Tottenham striker Harry Kane this summer. The England international is top of president Florentino Perez’s wish-list but Zidane is not convinced by the 24-year-old. Instead, Zidane would like Liverpool forward Mohamned Salah to be this summer’s primary Real Madrid transfer target. (Diario Gol)

Chelsea wing-back Marco Alonso has given ex-Barcelona coach Luis Enrique his backing to replace Antonio Conte in the Stamford Bridge dugout next season. “Luis Enrique has shown at Barcelona that he is a great coach with many qualities and I believe he would be good for any club, but I do not know him a lot on a personal level,” Alonso said. (Cope)

Paris Saint-Germain’s Champions League exit at the hands of Real Madrid on Tuesday night means coach Unai Emery will depart at the end of the season. The question remains, however, over who will replace the Spaniard. One new name in the race is Luis Enrique. The treble-winning former Barcelona coach left the Nou Camp at the end of last season with the intention of taking a year’s sabbatical but is expected to return to frontline coaching ahead of next season. (Mundo Deportivo)

Negotiations over Arthur’s protracted move from Gremio to Barcelona have broken down. Barca have been in talks with the Brazilian side since the end of last year but discussions have collapsed. The issues are centred around commission payments and the player’s wages. Barca won’t be too concerned about the breakdown as both of their non-EU squad spaces are filled currently. Arthur was not due to arrive until January 2019 but a deal now appears to be dead. (Marca)

Italy

Spanish midfielder Dani Ceballos has been out of favour at Real Madrid for much of the season and looks set to leave the Bernabeu this summer – just a year after joining from Real Betis. One option for the Spain Under-21 international is Roma. Sporting director Monchi was a fan of Ceballos while working at Sevilla and could renew his interest when the window re-opens. (Corriere dello Sport)

Gianluigi Buffon has revealed his future already is already decided – but he has yet to tell coach Max Allegri whether he will continue or not. Last week the goalkeeper’s agent said Buffon could play for another two years. “The reflections have been made, with the president we just have to see, our ideas fit together, but this is not the right stage,” Buffon said. “I would not make the coach nervous, we are at the height of the season.” (Gazzetta dello Sport)

Benfica midfielder Bryan Cristante has impressed on loan at Juventus this season, so much so that he has emerged as a West Ham, Liverpool, Watford and Arsenal transfer target. The 22-year-old is expected to sign for Atalanta permanently this summer as things stand. (Tuttosport)

Juventus will not entertain the idea of selling Colombian winger Juan Cuadrado who has been subject of Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain transfer rumours. The 29-year-old was a flop in the Premier League previously with Chelsea but has reinvented himself in Italy and has been in fine form again this season with three goals and four assists in Serie A. For that reason the Bianconeri will not sell at any price. (Calciomercato)

Austria

Bayern Munich defender David Alaba has admitted he could leave the club at the end of the season after Barcelona rekindled their interest in the 25-year-old. Long linked with a move to the Nou Camp, the Austrian said: “I am aware that this decision will come to me. I still feel very comfortable here, but I can also imagine taking a different path, taking the next step or looking for a new challenge. But I leave that decision open. I have goals for this season that I want to achieve, so there’s no room for that right now.” (Kurier)

Germany

The firesale at Hamburg looks to be underway with the only side never to have been relegated from the Bundesliga sitting second bottom, seven points from safety. Left-back Douglas Santos is interesting Dutch side PSV Eindhoven while winger Andre Hahn could be on his way to Augsburg. Keeper Julian Pollersbeck, meanwhile, is wanted by Cologne and Eintracht Frankfurt. (Sportbild)

Danny Welbeck Believes His Arsenal Teammates Now Have To Stick Together And Fight

Featured Image

Danny Welbeck has called on his Arsenal teammates to show a united front

Arsenal head to AC Milan for the first leg of their Europa League last-16 tie this week on the back of a four-match losing run in all competitions.

Supporters have once again turned on manager Arsene Wenger, whose position is understood to be under serious consideration, but Welbeck believes that it is down to the players to turn things around.

“As professionals, we know the results haven’t been good enough and we need to doing a lot better than we have been doing,” he told Sky Sports News. “The fans are hurting, everyone involved around the club is hurting and we feel a lot of disappointment and that’s something we have to put right.

“It’s been a difficult period but going into the next match, it’s something we want to turn into a positive result for us. I think you’ve got to be united in these situations. Unity is strength and division is weakness in this sort of period and I think if we can stay together and we stand up and fight, which is what we need to do at the moment.

“We are really good players so the quality will shine through if we do what’s required of us. We are professional footballers and we know what we have done to get to this stage, how we can keep on getting better and how we can improve on the negative results we’ve had recently.

“We want to improve but you do go home and look at yourself and say ‘how can I put things right?’. I think the minimum requirement is to stand and fight in every single area of the pitch and our quality will shine through in the end.”

You Lied! Thailand Reacts To Ogbeh’s Claim That Nigeria Collapsed Its Rice Mills

Featured Image

Thailand’s ambassador to Nigeria, Wattana Kunwongse, has reacted to a claim reportedly made by the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Audu Ogbeh, that Thailand accused Nigeria of being responsible for the collapse of its seven rice mills following the drastic fall in rice importation from the country.

In a letter sighted by Premium Times on Tuesday, Kunwongse described the minister’s claim as “misleading and a distortion of the actual discussion that transpired between them”.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) had last week reported that the minister said “just like two weeks ago, the Ambassador of Thailand came to my office and said to me that we have really ‘dealt’ with them.”

It is understood that Mr. Ogbeh made the claim at a meeting of the Presidential Fertilizer Initiative (PFI) and the leadership of the Fertiliser Producers and Suppliers of Nigeria (FEPSAN) held at the Council Chamber of the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

“But I asked what did we do wrong and he said unemployment in Thailand was one of the lowest in the world, 1.2 per cent, it has gone up to four per cent because seven giant rice mills have shut down because Nigeria’s import has fallen by 95 per cent on rice alone,” he had said.

However, the diplomat said Mr. Ogbeh may have lied.

His word: “The report is not only misleading but a distortion of the actual conversation between myself and the honourable Minister of Agriculture at the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development on 30th January 2018, which was nothing short of positivity and optimism on both sides.

“During which I praised President Buhari’s Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP), the essence of which is the endeavour to move the country to a self-sufficiency and export-oriented economy, and to that worthy cause, Thailand stands ready to work closely with the Nigerian Government in the field of technological transfer and agricultural machineries.

“At the same meeting, the honourable minister and I had reached the conclusion that I as Ambassador 0f Thailand to Nigeria will be working closely with the Ministry of Agriculture and rural development to establish a platform to discuss our mutual benefits in the form of MOU on Agricultural Cooperation and by forming a bilateral Working Committee toward that end.”

He added that “the report could not have been farther from the truth as Thailand’s official figures demonstrate that its rice export to the world in 2017 reached 11.48 million tons worth $5.1 billion.”

“Thailand’s rice export to the world in 2017 (January-December 2017) reached 11.48 million tons equalising to $5.1 billion (USD), a 15.54 per cent increase compared to previous years, which is one of the highest figures on the history Thailand’s rice exportation. There is no proof of any shutdown of Thailand’s major rice mills,” he said.

Draxler Slams Emery After UCL Exit

Featured Image

An angry Julian Draxler has hit out at PSG coach, Unai Emery, after his side’s loss to Madrid in the UCL.

Goals from Ronaldo and Casemiro sealed the 2-1 win, as the defending champions won 5-2 on aggregate to advance to the quarterfinals.

Verrati was sent off in the second half, and Draxler was set to be brought on, but Cavani’s equaliser prompted Emery to hold off until the last 14 minutes, before bringing in the Germany international.

“It was insensitive, ” he said of the decision not to bring him on in the aftermath of Cavani’s goal to ZDF. “I didn’t know what was going on. I was surprised and angry.

“The goal for 1-1 went in but it did not change anything for us. I felt we needed to keep pressing and playing offensively.

“We lost a man, and even though we got it to 1-1 the whole stadium knew the game would not turn around because we didn’t have the intensity on the pitch.

“Real Madrid played it out confidently and were not nervous at all.”

“We played the ball back and forth but you cannot score just doing that.

“You have to put pressure on Real Madrid when you are 3-1 down, not just pass it back and forth and hope something falls for you.

“We needed to put pressure on the opponents right from the start. We didn’t do that so we deserved to be eliminated.”

Featured Image

The pairing og Bambam and Teddya by big brotger seems like a match made in heaven, as Bamteddy have come to show everyone more than a few reasons why they rock the #bbnaija house.

When Bambam walked into the #bbnaija House, her almond eyes, heart-shaped face and enchanting smile sent electric sparkles in the air. With her petite frame, she was soft-spoken and held herself with an irresistible feminine candour. That perhaps is why it didnt come as a surprise that the buff and tattooed Teddy A was drawn to her as a magnet, and big brother helped to consolidate this by pairing them together.

Bambam had turned to Angel in whom she confided of her frustrations about Teddy A. Yet she held on and forgave because she was so smitten after all, and he brought the whole of his alpha male self-back to her.

Somehow Bamteddy were caught up in their own game, as measured by the increased frequency of their locked lips. Teddy A and Bambam had become an item in the #bbnaija House, following each other all the time, eating, showering together and sleeping in the same bed.

Like any couple, they did have a few fights, and threw each other cold looks over food, but their attraction is so much stronger that there is no tension that a kiss did not dissolve.

In a move that apparently cemented the fact that he was smitten, tough guy Teddy A admitted during the diary sessions to reciprocate the feelings for Bambam, who used her Head of House priviledge to Save him from Evictions.

Is the relationship between the two real or bogus?

The pairing dynamics have somewhat forced every keen follower of #bbnaija to look at the Housemates as units and discard the age long look of seeing them as individuals.

The pairings as made the #bbnaija housemates play as a ‘team’, but with the Eviction cycle in full swing, the Housemates were forced to bring out new stretegies tobensure they not only get enough votes from viewers but also remain in the #bbnaija house.

Why every single one of us enjoy a little bit of romance or a sizable one, it seems quite comforting to know that not everything in the #bbnaija house is scripted. That perhaps informs the reactions that are sometimes elicited when the romantic pairs act a certain way and how their sadness and happiness transcends to viewers.

The hardcore lovers find themselves drawn to other hard core loves; the broken hearted seem to gravitate towards tear worthy moments and empathise with the ‘victims’; while the players raise their hands and pay homage to other players, low key thanking them for the able representation.

So far, the The Big Brother Naija game has shown that it is not limited to the TV screens and social media posts, as it seems to incorporate viewers in the drama and melancholy of the house.

Infact, it wouldn’t be completely careless to assume that viewers are more invested, as they happen to know almost every move of the #bbnaija housemates and aptly follow every ttwist and plot.

Viewers tend to clap along when their favourite in house housemate beats the clock and comes out tops in a challenge, feel the butterflies when your favourite finally attracts the attention of their crush and cry when the Housemate you’re rooting for shares a sad story.

Just like the #bbnaija Housemates, you’re very aware of the fact that in some of your races, only one person will lift the trophy but you race anyway because along this path, there are victories far more valuable than the ultimate.

The friendships, the lessons and the self discovery is much more worth it than anything and that’s the lesson left for all to learn.

Sacchi: PSG Have Zero Idea

Featured Image

Legendary Italian manager, Arrigo Sacchi has slammed Paris Saint Germain, after their last-16 UCL exit at the hands of Madrid.

PSG lost 2-1 at home, to lose 5-2 on aggregate, crashing out in the absence of most expensive player, Neymar.

And Sacchi, winner of back-to-back European Cups with AC Milan in 1989 and 1990, took aim at mega-rich PSG post-match.

“Real faced a very weak opponent,” the 71-year-old told Mediaset.

“PSG are only a group of players. The word ‘game’ may be abstract, difficult to describe but it has made all the difference tonight.

“Ideas cannot be bought… PSG are missing a lot of things.”

Sacchi added: “Emery is a very good coach. He just needs the club behind him, and especially as the players follow his ideas.

“In Europe, you need the mentality but also the game. The game is like the score of a music and the scenario of a film.”
