Nigeria’s External Reserves Hit ‘New High’ Of $46bn

Featured Image

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has revealed that the country’s External Reserves is steadily growing and currently stands at $46bn.

The CBN Spokesman, Isaac Okoroafor, stated this in a statement on Sunday that the reserves grew by about $3.2bn between February and March 2018.

He said the reserves at the beginning of 2018 stood at $39.3bn, then rose to $42.8bn in February before hitting the new high of 46 billion dollars.

Okoroafor attributed the continued accruals to the country’s reserves to CBN’s effort at vigorously discouraging unnecessary importation and reducing the nation’s import bill, inflow from oil and non-oil exports.

He also attributed the increase to the huge inflows through the investors and exporters window of the foreign exchange market, which he said had attracted over 33 billion dollars since April 2017, when it was created.

According to him, the Bank’s interventions in the foreign exchange window had also helped to moderate the pressure on the foreign exchange reserves by sustaining liquidity in the market and boosting production and trade.

Okoroafor also said that the CBN policy restricting access to foreign exchange from Nigeria’s foreign exchange market to importers of some 41 items had made a huge impact on the status of Nigeria’s reserves.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) quoted him as saying that aside that, the policy had also boosted the supply of local substitutes for imported goods, created jobs at home and enhanced the incomes of farmers and local manufacturers.

Nigeria’s Eboe-Osuji Elected President Of International Criminal Court (ICC)

Featured Image

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has elected Nigeria’s Chile Eboe-Osuji as the president of the international court in Netherlands.

Chile Eboe-Osuji, who became the first Nigerian to be elevated to the court in 2012, would serve as ICC president for the next three years.

The announcement was contained in a statement posted on ICC website on Sunday, March 11, 2018.

Eboe-Osuji graduated with a Law Degree (LL.B) from the University of Calabar in 1985, before studying for a master of laws (LL.M) at the McGill University in Canada.

Read full statement below:

“Today, 11 March 2018, the judges of the International Criminal Court (ICC), sitting in a plenary session, elected Judge Chile Eboe-Osuji (Nigeria) as President of the Court for a three-year term with immediate effect. Judge Robert Fremr(Czech Republic) was elected First Vice-President and Judge Marc Perrin de Brichambaut (France) Second Vice-President.”

The new appointee was also quoted in the statement.

“I am deeply honoured to have been elected by my peers as President of the International Criminal Court. As I take up my duties, I feel encouraged that I am able to rely on the wide experience of the two Vice-Presidents, Judge Robert Fremr and Judge Marc Perrin de Brichambaut, both of whom I have closely worked with previously.

“I look forward to working together with them as well as with all the judges, all the Officials and the staff of the Court in a spirit of collegiality. I also look forward to collaborating with the Assembly of States Parties, civil society and the international community at large, acting together to strengthen and reinforce the Rome Statute system, the 20th anniversary of the adoption of which we celebrate this year”, President Chile Eboe-Osuji stated following the election.

“I am also grateful to the previous President, Judge Silvia Fernández de Gurmendi, and Vice-Presidents, Judges Joyce Aluoch and Kuniko Ozaki, for their work and leadership,” he added.

The Presidency – consisting of the President and the two Vice-Presidents – plays a key role in providing strategic leadership to the ICC as a whole.

The Presidency coordinates with the other organs and seeks the concurrence of the Prosecutor on matters of mutual concern. In accordance with the Rome Statute, the ICC’s governing treaty, the Presidency is responsible for the proper administration of the Court, with the exception of the Office of the Prosecutor.

The Presidency oversees the activities of the Registry and provides input into a broad range of administrative policies affecting the Court’s overall functioning.

Furthermore it conducts judicial review of certain decisions of the Registrar and concludes Court-wide cooperation agreements with States and international organisation.

Alcohol Consumers, Smokers To Pay More As Buhari Approves Tariff Hike

Featured Image

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved an amendment to the excise duty rates for alcoholic beverages and tobacco with effect from Monday, June 4, 2018 the Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, has said.

In a statement in Abuja on Sunday, Adeosun said the President also granted a grace period of 90 days to manufacturers of the products before the commencement of the new duty regime.

She said the new excise duty rates would spread over a three-year period from 2018 to 2020 in order to moderate the impact on prices of the products.

The minister said the new duty regime followed all-inclusive stakeholder engagements by the Tariff Technical Committee of the Federal Ministry of Finance with key industry stakeholders.

According to her, the upward review of the excise duty rates for alcoholic beverages and tobacco was to raise the government’s fiscal revenues.

She said that it would also reduce the health hazards associated with tobacco-related diseases and alcohol abuse.

Adeosun said the new duty rate on tobacco was a combination of the existing ad-valorem base rate and specific rate while the ad-valorem rate was replaced with a specific rate for alcoholic beverages.

“For alcoholic beverages, the current ad-valorem rate will be replaced with specific rates and spread over three years to moderate the impact on prices.

“This will curb the discretion in the Unit Cost Analysis for determining the ad-valorem rate and prevent revenue leakages.

“For tobacco, the government will maintain the current ad-valorem rate of 20 per cent and introduce additional specific rates with the implementation to be spread over a three-year period to also reasonably reduce the impact on prices,’’ Adeosun said.

She said that under the newly approved excise duty rates for tobacco in addition to the 20 per cent ad-valorem rate, each stick of cigarette will attract one naira specific rate per stick, that is N20 per pack of 20 sticks in 2018,

She said that tobacco would in 2019 attract duties of two naira specific rate per stick, that is N40 per pack of 20 sticks in 2019 and N2.90 kobo specific rate per stick, that is N58 per pack of 20 sticks in 2020.

Adeosun explained that Nigeria’s cumulative specific excise duty rate for tobacco was 23.2 per cent of the price of the most sold brand as against 38.14 per cent in Algeria, 36.52 per cent in South Africa and 30 per cent in Gambia.

She said also that the new specific excise duty rate for alcoholic beverages cut across beer and stout, wines and spirits for the three years, 2018 to 2020.

Under the new regime, beer and stout will attract .30k per centilitre in 2018 and 35k per cl each in 2019 and 2020.

Wines will attract N1.25k per Cl in 2018 and N1.50k per Cl each in 2019 and 2020, while N1.50k per Cl was approved for spirits in 2018, N1.75k per Cl in 2019 and N2 per Cl in 2020.

Adeosun said that the new excise duty regimes were in line with the Economic Community of West African States directive on the harmonisation of member-states’ legislation on excise duties.

The ECOWAS Council of Ministers had at its 62nd and 79th Ordinary Sessions in Abuja in May 2009 and December 2017, issued directives on the harmonisation of the ECOWAS Member States’ Legislations on Excise Duties.

The directives seek to harmonise member-states’ legislations on excise duties of non-oil products and also stipulate the scope of application, rate of taxation, taxable event and amount.

JAMB Bars Candidates With Biometric Identification Issues From Writing UTME

Featured Image

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has disclosed that any candidate that cannot be identified through biometrics will be barred from writing the ongoing Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

The board’s Head, Media and Information Department, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Lagos.

He said this against the backdrop of some reported cases in some centres where some candidates could not be identified through JAMB’s electronic system.

He said: “We want to clearly state here that any candidate who cannot be identified using biometrics will not be allowed to sit for this examination.

“So far, over 450,000 candidates have sat for the examination and we have had reported cases where some of the candidates could not be identified as they placed their fingers on the machines for identification.

“Candidates sitting for this examination are not to be identified by mere registration numbers or names, but through the machines.

“We know that at the point of registration for this examination, candidates’ details were captured with live photographs as well as their fingerprints.

“So, while going for the examination, it is only expected that candidates should be screened and identified using biometrics.

“This method should be able to call up candidates’ identity and so, there is no way a candidate will just come and mention his name and registration number and be allowed in without going through the right process.”

Benjamin said the measure was to ensure the eligibility of candidates and reduce cases of impersonation.

Barcelona have released a statement confirming there is a deal to sign Gremio midfielder, Arthur in the summer.

The Brazil youngster burst into limelight when he helped his club beat Lanus last year, to claim the Copa Libertadoes.

#BBNaija 2018 Day 42: Cee-C and Tobi At It Once Again

Featured Image

After an awesome party by Dj Jimmy Jatt the #bbnaija housemates enjoyed Ifu Enada’s meal and quickly prepared for bed but little did they knpw that a long night was in the offing. Rico Swavey’s over indulging got him vomiting and demanding the other #bbnaija Housemate’s quick reaction to cleaning up and making sure he is well and good.

However, things soon took a nee dimension when Cee-C and Tobi went for each others jugular, throwing insults and swearing at each other, something that they have done before. The only difference this time is that there was a mediator, Teddy A.

Even though he tried to listen to both sides of the story, it wasn’t clear what triggered the start of the argument. Cee-C did mention, though, that because its eviction she wants to clear the air because anything can happen.

Meanwhile their strategic partners had to intervene and calm them down, but the two seemed bent on ensuring that they aired their mind.

Tobi’s over intoxication seemed not to help matters either and his other pair, Alex had to speak to him in a louder voice, asking him to drop the fight and go to sleep.

After what seemed like ages, Cee-C found solace in unlikely sources, Leo and Alex. Her possibly leaving the #bbnaija House has got her shook so she tried to make amends with Alex and she was surprisingly successful at it.

Despite the fact that the early morning was bedevilled with Rico vomiting in the House to Cee-C and Tobi’s fight it was all well when everyone went to sleep.

Jist like we have seen before, Tobi and Cee-C’s fight ais apparently for them only. They ended up forgiving each other and spending the night in the same bed.

The saying “Two is company, four is a party, three is a crowd. One is a wanderer” proves to be true in every sense of the word, when it comes to the duo and it is left to be seen when another of their fights come up.

Over 50 Italy-Bound Nigerian Migrants Rescued In Mediterranean Sea

Featured Image

No fewer than 50 Nigerian migrants were among the hundreds of migrants rescued today in the Mediterranean by Libya’s coastguard and an international charity, Doctors Without Borders(MSF).

The Nigerians were aboard a boat with 110 migrants. They were rescued by Aquarius, a ship being operated by MSF,  21 miles from the coast west of Tripoli. The ship will deliver the migrants, who included 18 women and one child,  to Italy.

According to Reuters, more than half the migrants on that boat were Nigerians, with the rest from other sub-Saharan African countries as well as two Palestinians.

The Libyan coastguard vessels also intercepted two of the migrant boats, the first an inflatable dinghy that had broken down with 125 people on board off Zawiya, just west of the capital, Tripoli, said Ayoub Qassem, a coastguard spokesman.

The second boat was turned back off Garabulli, east of Tripoli, and had 112 people on board.

The migrants and their  smugglers were trying to take advantage of calm seas as they launched a flurry of boats towards Italy.

#BBNaija 2018 Day 41: DJ Jimmy Jatt Delivers At The All White Party

Featured Image

The morning of day 41 saw big brother deliver the party outfits for the #bbnaija housemates and they unpacked them with excitement ,even as they giggled like children.

It was the first time in the history of the Double Wahala #bbnaija history that the Housemates screamed so loud at the discovery of the dresses, shoes, shirts and accessories gifted to them. Miracle and Tobi bounced back and forth as they impatiently tried the all-white trainers, high-heeled sandals while squealing with delight.

Saturday night parties have always been the peak of the week in the #bbnaija hoise, as the mood in the House is that of glamour and playfulness. The dancefloor has by far been one of the preferred area for the #bbnaija Housemates as it’s where they get to let some steam off, enjoy a few glasses and break a good sweat to the sound of the latest hits.

The night of day 41 saw Biggie increase the stakes by hosting an all-white party that pioneer Nigerian hiphop DJ Jimmy Jatt spiced up. He is someone that is most recognised and revered for pushing hip-hop in Nigeria, and DJ Jimmy Jatt didnt disappoint as he blasted his mixtape to the pleasure of the #bbnaija Housemates.

None of the other housemates could follow Alex and her impressive legwork, except for Rico swavey who tried but gave up after a few steps.

Together with Tobi, the duo led the party with extremely provocative and suggestive moves. As much as the dancefloor has been a leisure area, with all the grinding and hip-shaking took place, there were too many wandering hands that ended up on very private body parts.

Clearly, as Lolu has shown, it is becoming increasingly dificult for some of the #bbnaija Housemates to keep the tension bottled-up. How much can the pretenders hold own before their true colours are revealed?

#BBNaija 2018 Day 41: How The Wins By The Ladies Have Shaped The House

Featured Image

The women in the #bbnaija house have no doubt proven themselves to be a force to reckon with, by regularly providing worthy challenges for the men in the house.

Starting from Bambam’s breakthrough victory of the Head of House title, the women led week five in the #bbnaija Double Wahala House. Since wearing the crown, it is another Bambam altogether who was on the screen.

She at times acted as the unofficial counsellor, wise peacemaker and when she finally let her guards down revealed a party animal side. Even under her new pairing with Rico, Bambam remained Teddy A’s sidekick and shadow. Yet her leadership role pulled the best out of her as she has blossomed over the days.

Ifu Ennada has also shown her amazing hosting skills, and week six in the #bbnaija house saw her take the lead for the morning fitness workouts. With her outstanding stamina, it hasn’t been easy to catch up with her pace, yet the #bbnaija Housemates seem to have enjoyed her guidance.

With the creative challenge, Ifu has demonstrated once more how much of a good sport she really was, and winning the Presentation has sent her through the roof.

Anto also seems to be operating on the same wavelength as Ifu Ennada, as she has very much remained her own woman, keeping a tab on everyone while sharpening her game.

As for Alex and Nina, they have remained steady on the nurturing, loving and supporting tracks. Both have been since the start the silent cheerleaders of their peers, with Leo and Miracle been the recipients of most of their attention.

In a way, both #bbnaija housemates have fused well with their partners that they could easily fade into the décor like wallpaper flowers.

Had it not be for Alex and Cee-C’s fight, Alex would probably have gone under the radar. It was the first time that both came at each other’s throat. Their spat was so sudden that Lolu had to stand in between and separate them.

Luck also smiled on Cee-C as she secure her very first win at the Friday night arena games in the #bbnaija House. Her victory resonated in the House for Housemates seemed to have learned that when a woman is happy, everybody is happy.

Police Trafficking In And Selling Traffic Offences

Police trafficking in and selling traffic offences By Kole Omotoso

CLICK here to read more opinion articles

In travelling up and down this country road blocks are a constant encounter except in the northern parts of the country. No matter how many times the Inspector General of Police has declared them illegal, they still persist in existing. It is inconvenient to make them go away. The police have their own. The army has its own. The road safety have their own. And well armed kidnappers also have their own road blocks. And they all fleece the ordinary men and women going about their God blessed everyday responsibilities. At the road blocks traffic offences are bought and sold.

This piece was written by Kole Omotoso and was first published on Nigerian Guardian. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

Normally, and not in Nigeria, the police stop the vehicle by a wave of the hand. The driver stops. The police greets him or her and after all protocols have been observed, asks for his driving license. It is on its protection and inspection as current that the police asks if the driver knows that he was speeding just now, or has just made a U turn where he should not. While the driver is preparing her defence the police produce a ticket booklet one of which he proceeds to write for the driver. I didn’t know I was speeding or where is the notice that there is no U turning here? are possible defence arguments.

When the ticket is written and presented the driver accepts it and puts it away. He can pay the five thousand naira admission of guilt fine into the police account and that would be the end of the matter. But the driver might want to contest the offence written in the ticket in which case he indicates that he did not commit any offence and he would appear in court to defend himself. The court will decide.

In Nigeria, the police shout and harry the driver to a stop and without observing any protocol, accuses the driver of having a tainted window, or having four passengers in the back seat of a private car or even an offence he has not seen yet. There and then he invites himself into the car and instructs the driver where to go. Where did you say? asks the driver. Drive me to my police station because I have arrested you for a traffic offence. You have arrested me and I must drive you and myself to your police station, right? Yes, let’s go. Where is the arrest warrant? And why must I drive you to your police station? So that I can charge you for contravening a traffic offence. And what if I refuse to drive you to your police station and order you to get your stinking body out of my car, what will you do?

In the meantime overloaded public transport vehicles are speeding past throwing down one hundred naira notes as they speed away. Decrepit agbegilodo lorries lacking mud guards, windscreen and any lights of any sort – they never go into the forest at night, thank you – spewing black smoke every where go by. These are not stopped.

People gather around the car and wonder what’s going on. An elderly man advises the driver to do the right thing. And what is the right thing in this circumstance, the driver wants to know. You don’t know what to do? Are you new in Jerusalem? The man is looking for something to eat, can’t you see? The driver is mystified. What has his lunch or dinner got to do with me, he wonders. I myself, I have not eaten today. We are not talking about that kind of food, explains the adviser. What type of food the? The driver is getting impatient. He was determined not to drive to the police station to be charged. And then be detained because it is late on a Friday evening to arrange a bail. The prospect of a week end at the police detention centre was not appealing. So when the policeman says let’s go, the driver said yes let’s go but I’m going to my house.

Are you kidnapping me then? I am not a kidnapper, declared the driver. I did not invite you into my car. You invited yourself and, as if you were in a taxi, you ordered me to drive you to your police station so that you can charge me for not having tainted window permit. Did you ask to see my driving license? Did you ask to see the ownership papers of the car? Of course you did not. A woman who had been watching everything and had said until now said: why would he bother himself asking you for what you should have? The police ask for what you don’t have so they milk you for their own gain. Give him something and go on your way.

Something like what? I have nothing to give anybody. I don’t owe him, do I?

Yes you do! Look at him! Look at his shoes. Is that how the shoes of a police officer should look? And with no pair of socks? Look at his shirt. Look at what he is using to hold up his pair of shapeless trousers. Rope, for God’s sake, a piece of rope. And the shirt, grimy on the neck, faded all over and torn hear and there. How can you say you do not owe him something. You owe him plenty wallahi!

The police man, who had not spoken for some time cleared his throat. He doesn’t owe nothing. I’m doing my work. At the station I will charge him. I will tell him how much to pay and give him the account into which he will make the payment. Will it be into the accounts of one of your bosses, asked the adviser again. But you have not been paid for six months and your house in the barracks is a slum. Couldn’t you just a little amount from him and let him go? And you yourself will get a few naira to feed your family tonight. You do not understand us, we the police. Especially we the junior officers. We will save this country. We reject corruption in all its filthy aspects. We rededicate ourselves to the survival of our country. O ya, let’s go to the station. The driver started the car, put the gear in drive and pulled away from the crowd.

I’m not going to any police station. And he sped off.

#BBnaija 2018 Day 41: Biggie Switches Things Up

Featured Image

The #bbnaija Housemates have discovered with time that every single one of them entered Biggie’s House at their own emotional risks and with about six weeks into the season, families, friends and freedom have started to be missed.

It has gone for so long, so much so that if it wasn’t for Biggie’s constantly keeping them on their toes, some of the #bbnaija Housemates would have had a much harder time. While the bonding and reshuffling of pairs has tightened relations, even the toughest in the house have begun to crack.

As a way of lightening up the mood in the #bbnaija house and maybe because that is who she is, Alex chose to shake the tension away, and got everyone to follow her freestyle dancing.

Soon enough, the dance out turned out into some kind of group dance therapy, the likes of which offered a much welcome relief for all the housemates and they pretty much owed the morale boost to Alex and the great moves she engineered.

As for Anto it came out that she was as loved as feared by her peers. Earning the love of her pairs in the #bbnaija house was no small feat, especially given the amount of Double Wahala available, but earning the fear has come in the same package. Neither seems inseparable from Anto’s legendary mystery.

Just when the #bbnaija Housemates loss another wager, and were still reconciling with the news mentally, Biggie boosted their morale by announcing that Team Blue had won the Presentation and secured mentorship, seed money and much more to help it develop its app.

This was one thing that some of the #bbnaija housemates needed and they couldnt wait to enjoy the treat and rewards that came along with the effort they put in for the win.

‘Black Panther’ Roars Past $1 Billion At Global Box Office

Featured Image

On its fourth Friday in theaters, Marvel’s “Black Panther” became the 33rd film in box office history to cross the $1 billion mark at the global box office, hitting the mark on its opening day in China.

The Ryan Coogler tentpole is the 33rd movie to gross $1 billion at the global box office in just 26 days.

Only Black Panther Can Stop Boko Haram

It’s the 16th Disney film to reach this milestone, and the fifth Marvel film to do so — joining the ranks of “The Avengers,” “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” “Iron Man 3,” and “Captain America: Civil War.”

The Disney’s mega hit was pushed over the mark by an estimated $22 million opening day total in China, as well as $9.9 million grossed in its fourth Friday in the U.S.

The film has made $521 million domestically, becoming the No. 2 superhero release of all time, surpassing “The Dark Knight.”

Receiving near-universal critical acclaim, the film recently achieved the rare feat of a 100 per cent “Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Black Panther And The Debt We Owe Black Americans

Despite buzz over the history-making cast and crew behind it, Coogler said his first goal was to make a good film.

“First things first, it’s got to work as a movie. That’s hard enough to do,” Coogler told “CBS This Morning” in February. He said his past experience as an athlete helped him tune out the pressure.

“Thankfully I grew up playing football, playing sports and played in college and have been under high-pressure situations in that environment,” he said. “But when you let the pressure interfere too much, it can stop you from doing your work.”

Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige spoke to Entertainment Weekly where he said there “absolutely” will be a Black Panther sequel.

“One of the favourite pastimes at Marvel Studios is sitting around on a Part One and talking and dreaming about what we would do in a Part Two,” he said.

“There have been plenty of those conversations as we were putting together the first Black Panther. We have ideas and a pretty solid direction on where we want to head with the second one.”

The international success of Black Panther has helped break “unwritten Hollywood rules,” Jeff Bock, a senior analyst at entertainment research firm Exhibitor Relations, told The New York Times.

“I think about it like a wall crumbling,” he continued. “In terms of Black Panther, no studio can say again, ’Oh, black movies don’t travel, overseas interest will be minimal.’”

‘Black Panther’ Roars Past $1 Billion At Global Box Office

#BBNaija 2018 Day 41: Tasty Lunch To The Rescue For Team Blue

Featured Image

Day 41 in the #bbnaija house was all about Team Blue, as they recieved their reward for acing the Heritage bank challenge were Biggies ensured they wined and dined thanks in victory.

The #bbnaija Housemates lost their Wager on day 40, and the implication of this is that they all have to strain themselves, as there will be slim pickings in the House for the rest of the week. Day 41 was however different for Ifu Ennada, Leo, Tobi and Lolu, as they got to gorge themselves on the most delectable cuisine.

The apparently tasty lunch was lavishness at its best, as it included lobster, oysters, calamari and steak with all the trimmings for the victorious team. The wine and champagne were also flowing and this made for some juicy conversation.

After a week of water restrictions and enviromental awareness, this lunch was like a gift from above.

The conversation was unbridled at lunch, as it switched from Ifu’s imminent issues with Cee-C to which she said she “doesn’t hate her but doesn’t like her either” to Leo brazenly speaking about his love interest outside of the #bbnaija House.

Leo’s in-House love Alex even came to the table during lunch and stole a hug from the amorous Housemate. Towards the end of the lunch the conversation was directed towards love and relationships, the guys spoke about what they look for in a woman.

Tobi made it known that he believes it is a specific connection and that the woman in question needs to be beautiful inside and out.

It is no secret that the #bbnaija Housemates are not the best at following rule and today was no different. Biggie specifically told them that they need to watch on while Team Blue enjoyed the lunch but that lasted all of about five minutes before they all went inside to prepare their own, less glamorous lunch.

The #bbnaija Housemates like Anto, Teddy A and Alex drifted to and from the table during the food extravaganza to take a gander at what was being served. Teddy A was noticeably jealous of how well they were eating.

With the saturday night party coming up, it will hopefully lift spirits and help the Housemates forget about their Wager loss.
