Champions League Results: Liverpool Eliminate Man City, Barcelona Humbled In Rome

Featured Image

Liverpool marched into the Champions League semi-finals with a 2-1 victory at Etihad Stadium that confirmed a 5-1 aggregate triumph over Manchester City.

On a fraught and energy-sapping evening, the home side reduced their three-goal deficit from the first leg within two minutes of kick-off through Gabriel Jesus, before Bernardo Silva struck the post and Leroy Sane had an effort disallowed.

But Mohamed Salah killed City’s hopes of a comeback when, 11 minutes into the second half, he punished City’s hesitant defending to chip in a decisive away goal while Roberto Firmino put the icing on the cake when he slotted home a second.

So the Reds progress to the competition’s last four for the first time in a decade and await Friday’s semi-final draw with huge anticipation.

Elsewhere, Barcelona crashed out of the Champions League in stunning fashion as a superb performance from AS Roma powered the Italians to a 3-0 victory on Tuesday night at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome, earning passage to the semi-finals.

The Italians dominated throughout and were fully deserving of the win both in the match and the aggregate, which ended level 4-4 with Roma owning the away goal tiebreaker.

It was Barcelona’s poorest display of the season, above all in defence as the visitors were overwhelmed and outplayed at every turn by the home side.
But full credit belongs to Roma, who put forth a masterclass and achieved a comeback that will long live in Champions League lore.

Davido Reveals How Much Money Will Make His Life All Set

Featured Image

DMW Boss, Davido who had one time boast of having 30 billion in his account has revealed what he needs to have his life all set.

One may begin to wonder if 30 billion whether in Naira or dollar is not enough for Davido, then how much money in this world will be enough for him.

Recall, the singer recently spent a whooping $235k (N86m) on a 2018 Bentley Bentayga and has also been splashing cash on diamond encrusted 30 billion Gang chains for himself, his crew, daughter and girlfriend.

Of course, Davido’s lavish lifestyle did not start today but don’t think too far on how much money he needs to be really financially okay.

The singer himself took to snapchat to disclose how much he needs to have his life set. According to OBO, he needs $10million to have his life set.

Going by a careful calculation, $10m is equivalent to N3.6bn, which is up to how much he boasts to have in account when he sang “IF”.

Well, this is clear-cut proof that the “30 Billion In The Account” lyrics is just lyrics not the real deal.

#BBNaija 2018 Day 71: Housemates Tasked With Appreciation Challenges

Featured Image

Yet another stress-filled breeze took over the #bbnaija house as the Housemates were summoned to the arena for yet another round of heavy breathing, deep sighs and waves of anxiety. As always, big brother re-invented himself and brought the the #bbnaija Housemates a simple but slightly complex challenge, especially to a blind man.

Before the Head of House qualifier however, the #bbnaija Housemates had their week broken down and sub sectioned into stranger than usual challenges.

In accordance with the week’s theme, the #bbnaija Housemates are to collectively compose poems for each of the Evicted Housemates, with 3 being presented on the daily. Furthermore, Biggie gave them a head start advantage by letting them know that they’d have to prepare an appreciation lunch for themselves on Saturday.

The most classic of the challenges listed on their brief however was that of the #bbnaija Housemates having to appreciate one another on the horn’s cue.

Whenever it sounds, the #bbnaija Housemates are to embrace and serenade each other with compliments, aiming to unify the House. This has already been done and it seems to be having the desired effect as the Housemates are being blatantly honest with their approach.

Back to the qualifiers, the pairs lined up and prepared to bring down their pinatas, with one part of the pair refereeing the hitting while their other played ‘batman’ and tried to break the dangling targets open.

Tobi and Miracle were the first to make it rain, followed by the Miracle and Lolu pair, later joined Cee-C and Nina, who narrowly secured their spot in the final event.

Things didn’t turn out as sweetly for Khloe and Anto though because there were the unfortunate pair whose loss will see them sit the head of house position out. With immunity at stake and 6 players gunning for it, it’s anyone’s game really.

Sam Johnstone Considering Quitting Manchester Permanently

Featured Image

Goalkeeper Sam Johnstone has admitted that he cannot “wait around forever” to be given an opportunity at Manchester United.

Sam Johnstone has spent the last 15 years of his career at Manchester United but is yet to make a senior appearance for the club.

Johnstone has instead gone on to represent six different clubs out on loan.

The 25-year-old has made 41 outings in the Championship for Aston Villa this season, and the stopper has acknowledged that he may have to take his chances elsewhere.

Johnstone told The Guardian: “If you leave, then the one downside is that you haven’t done that despite being there since you were 10.

“I’d have liked to have done it, but you’ve got the world’s best goalkeeper, David de Gea, at the club and you can’t wait around forever.”

“I enjoy seeing fans say that because I enjoy being here,” he says. “Basically I’ve gone from one end of the spectrum to the other.

That’s something I’m proud of, to have turned their opinions of me, and I think the goalkeeping coach [Gary Walsh] has probably seen a change in me. You just need those games to get your confidence.”

South Africa’s Caster Semenya Breaks 1500m Commonwealth Games Record To Win Gold Medal

Featured Image

South Africa’s Caster Semenya has taken almost four seconds off the 1500m Commonwealth Games record, as she won the gold medal at Carrara Stadium today

Semenya produced a personal-best time of 4:00.71 to shatter the previous best mark at the Commonwealth Games, finishing 2.38s ahead of silver medallist Beatrice Chepkoech of Kenya.

Semenya’s margin of victory was all the more remarkable considering each of the top six in the race would have broken the previous Games record.

Five women broke their personal best in the high-quality field, including Wales’ Melissa Courtney, who produced a stunning performance to win the bronze medal ahead of Australian duo Linden Hall and Georgia Griffith.

Semenya’s gold continued a proud Games for South Africa on the track, following Akani Simbine’s 100m gold when he upstaged Jamaica’s favourite Yohan Blake on Monday.

Another African nation, Botswana, also denied Jamaica in the men’s 400m as the flamboyant Isaac Makwala blitzed the field with a quality time of 44.35sec. Makwala crossed the line with mouth agape and arms spread like an aeroplane, well clear of his compatriot Baboloki Thebe (45.09) and Jamaica’s Javon Francis in third.

Karim Benzema Having A Rough Time At Real Madrid- Zinedine Zidane

Featured Image

Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane believes that Karim Benzema has ‘perhaps suffered a little’ during the current campaign.

Karim Benzema has scored just eight goals in all competitions this season, and the French international has managed to find the back of the net just once in his last eight outings.

However, Zidane has praised the attitude of the frontman, who he says continues to remain “driven” to improve his form during the closing weeks of the campaign.

At a press conference, the 45-year-old told reporters: “He is the same as always, perhaps he’s suffering a little.

“He wants to do better and score more goals but he is training and is driven, focused like his teammates.”

Karim Benzema has been subjected to endless whistles and jeers in the Bernabéu and during his pre-match press conference ahead of the return leg against Juventus in the Champions League

#BBNaija 2018 Day 71: Fiery Cee-C Is Undergoing A Change

Featured Image

It appears Cee-C who has come to be known as the fierce queen in the #bbnaija house is undergoing a transformation to a less cinfrontational queen.

Despite having been engaged in more than a couple of quarrels, she seems to always find minimal fault in her own actions and quite a lot in those of others. Her course of ‘self-justification’ began last night when Anto shifted the ‘separation’ blame from Khloe and pinned it on her.

As per usual, she didn’t let the blame game slide off that easily and opted to voice it out with Anto who neutrally obliged. Her piece was that people seem to always come at her while all she wants is to restore order by talking things out.

Furthermore, she told Anto that she did want a friendship with her, pre-eviction. Anto on the hand reminded Cee-C that the other #bbnaija Housemates’ perceptions of them was quite similar to those of the viewers, despite the viewers having a wider viewing spectrum.

On a smaller scale though, Cee-C seems to always refer to being told ‘I don’t trust you’, which is what Tobi kept telling her before they permanently parted ways. While the statement seems to be completely open for interpretation, it seems she is not completely over the issue.

Thanks to Nina, Cee-C was allowed yet another venting session. The two initiated a conversation that started off as a discussion about Cee-C’s bad dreams and strange sleeping behaviour but ended up with serious venting.

Cee-C explained that she only became vocal because of the amount of pressure exerted upon her in the #bbnaija House, also making references to the first two weeks of the game and how she’d been able to keep her cool; reckoning that the disturbed sleep is caused by stress and therefore needed no intervention of any type.

Moreover, she made it known that she felt that she didn’t need to adjust her personality because people choose to always see he faults.

Cee-C has been making somewhat positive moves and tried connecting with the other #bbnaija Housemates but her efforts are thrown back at her due to the others perceiving them as fake and centred solely around her own gaming ambitions.

Her approach hasn’t helped her much though because she continues being a live wire and that alone encourages all of the explosive detonation that occurs around her. With just 14 days remaining till the end of this season of #bbnaija, we wonder if this narrative will change.

Liverpool Manager Jurgen Klopp Confirms Emre Can Will Not Play Again For The Club This Season

Featured Image

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that Emre Can will not play again this season.

Last month, Emre Can suffered a back injury and was forced to cut short his time on international duty with Germany.

Ahead of the first leg of the club’s Champions league quarter-final with Manchester City, Klopp said that Can was nearing a return from a back injury, but it appears that the 24-year-old has suffered a setback.

Asked whether Can’s campaign was over, the manager simply replied: “Yes.”

Quite why Klopp opted to provide more clarity in one interview than another is unclear, but there could be no more definitive statement than the one provided in his native tongue.

Can has just under three months left on his current contract, and is yet to show any willingness to extend his deal at Anfield

EFCC Re-Arraigns Ex-Governor’s Son For Alleged Money Laundering

Featured Image

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) re-arraigned Nanle Dariye, the son of former Plateau governor, Joshua Dariye, on a charge of money laundering on Tuesday in Abuja.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the total sum in question is about N1.5 billion. The defendant who was re-arraigned before Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu at the Federal High Court, Abuja, entered a “not guilty” plea to all six-counts of money laundering. Justice Ojukwu adjourned the matter until April 27 and May 10 for commencement of trial.

The anti-graft agency had first arraigned Nanle Dariye, who’s father is also facing prosecution, on February 27 on the same money laundering charges alongside Apartment le Paradis, a hotel where he served as director.

The EFCC alleged that in 2013, the ex-governor’s son failed to report a cash transaction to the tune of about N1.5 billion which he received through the hotel’s account in one of the old generation banks. Adding that the amount was far over the N10 million threshold permissible by law and that the hotel was also not registered as a Designated Non-Financial Institution, (DNFI).

The agency said the offense contravened Section 5(1) (a) of the Money Laundering Prohibition Act, 2011 as amended and punishable under Section 5 (b) of the same Act. He was admitted to bail in the sum of N5 million with two sureties in like sum

It said that the President’s declaration was reasonable and satisfactory, adding that his second term would make Nigeria stronger as well as preserve the tenets of democracy in the country.

It stated that the chapter’s expectations had been met by Buhari’s declaration, and assured that it would work assiduously for the electoral success of the APC at all levels.

“President Buhari needs to consolidate on the achievements his administration has recorded in over three years, especially in economic growth, anti-graft war, security and youth development.

“He deserves a second term and we are proud that he has yielded and declared his readiness to re-contest the election as Nigeria’s President in 2019 in earnest.

“His administration’s achievements in the areas of security, economic growth, anti-corruption war and social development and other areas are visible to Nigerians,’’ the chapter said.

It added that Nigerians should consider the re-election bid as a major step to consolidate and re-invent the country into “an emerging economic and democratic world power.”

NAN quoted the UK chapter of the APC as also calling on Nigerians across the world, irrespective of religion and geographical location, to see the re-election bid of the President as a major step that would help Nigeria to stabilise.

The Nigerians who cross the Sahara on their way to Europe were exploited by all kinds of people: in Nigeria in Benin by the agent, in Sahara, on the way to Agadez, by Bedouins and Berbers who extorted money from them.
In Libya, they were sold as slaves usually because they could not pay the asking price which had doubled since they left Benin or for any capricious reason by the racketeers.

All these economic migrant adventurers claim that the reason for leaving was there were no opportunities in Nigeria for them to work.

There is some evidence to support this: for example, six million Nigerian were refused university places in five years. Nigeria has massive graduate unemployment even among the few who go to university.

There is no viable scheme for skill acquisition and no political will to engage the unemployed beyond slogans.

Frustrations make them fall into the hands of racketeers – African and European, which make them prey to the recruiter (huntsmen) and racketeers.

We in effect have a self-perpetuating myth because the inadequacy of Government, business, and family to respond at all levels. The upshot is the inability to manage ambition, even when these ambitious are irresponsible and unrealistic.

Europe’s hunger for cheap labour, cheap sex, stories which Europeans tell back home about opportunities in Nigeria/African encourage the traffic; expatriate salaries in Africa compared to local salaries merely exacerbate a bad situation.

Some feel that if Europeans can earn such huge salaries in Africa, why should Africans not have such differential pay in Europe? Even legitimate services – an expatriate doctor or engineer – earns well above his Nigerian counterpart in Nigeria.

When the Nigerian doctor or engineer works in Europe the Nigeria has no such luck: in fact, his pay, some claim, is usually less.

Victor was sold as a slave, rescued in Libya, deported to Nigeria. CNN traced him back to Benin where his story originally began and thus informing CNN’s story of how the trade is conducted.

The CNN does not tell us how or by whom Victor was rescued. When slaves are sold it is usually for life but Victor is able to escape.

Large swarth of Southern Sudan is occupied by Nigerians – at last count – over 1.5 million – usually people on their way to Mecca who failed to do so. There are Nigerians in almost all the countries in Africa. But they are not slaves.

Long before the CNN exposé, Nigerian women have been recruited and trafficked, mainly by people from East European countries – Serbia, Montenegro, Chek, Slovakia, and Russia.

Other are Italian, Dutch traffickers who use a different route – the women fly into these countries and join an elaborate network of prostitution, menial labour during which they pay off their recruiters, sometimes with promises that the Nigerians arrange for their sisters, and relatives and friends as new fodder for the system.

Hundreds are enterprising, work hard, pay off their debts, marry locally, and send money home. Benin is full of houses built by women who live overseas.

Back to Victor: he is vocal in captivity – and returns to Nigeria. If CNN can find him, so can many other organizations. What has happened to Victor and other returnees in Nigeria? Our security service presumably has debriefed them.

If so how come no arrest of the traffickers in Benin and elsewhere despite the boast of Edo State Attorney General.

There are Nigerian’s who are enamored to NGOs. Why is there not one trying to help returnees?

Government response has so far been short of any coherent policy and woefully inadequate. An old adage is don’t give fish to a person: rather teach him how to fish.

If a CNN reporter can identify the traffickers in Nigeria, so can our security forces – why not persecute and jail them for their activities? The usual panacea of job training, counseling, etc. should be employed in Nigeria for Victor and his ilk.

What is the ministry of Nigeria Foreign Affairs doing in Libya? We always had a robust security service system in Libya and Niger and Chad? What happened? Is there no Consular Service in Libya?

However, we should ask the Bleeding Hearts of the United States and Europe, who broke Libya? The traffickers started operating fully, after the West removed the most effective Government in Libya since 1966.

They orchestrated the destruction of Gadhafi without replacing him with an effective Government – a feat they repeated in Egypt and Iraq and Iran. Western interests in these areas are different and opposed to the progressive interests of the people of the area.

The West must own the vessel they broke in Libya in as much the same way as they must own that broken in Egypt and the rest of the Maghreb.

Why does Libya want slaves? Don’t they have enough workers? The CNN does not tell us this because it would explain why a widespread practice of two or three auctions is held daily in Libya.

Victor wants to be a designer but there are technical colleges in Nigeria – why didn’t he go there? What was his qualification which made him unable to get a job? Many of the returnees have claimed that they saved N1.5 million which they spent on the Libyan adventure.

According to CNN, there is international complicity in the trafficking of slaves. The arrival of these economic migrants is one of the feedstock for the far right movement and the isolation politics in Europe.

The world response when CNN aired this programme operation of slavery was against the West. This was massive. The reaction in Nigeria was tepid and even indifferent.

The West moved to repatriate 15,000 instead of the miserable 1000 per month.

CNN traced those repatriated – CNN comes to Nigeria, to an unsavoury neighbourhood where they men Pusherman, Eveke and an army of traffickers – selling hopes through trafficking human beings.

#BBNaija 2018 Day 71: Tobi And Miracle Take Over Kitchen Duties

Featured Image

Miracle and Tobi also known under the Toracle moniker for their bromance, seem to have grown chef’s hats, as they took over cooking duties in the #bbnaija house following the exit of Rico swavey.

For the second consecutive day, the duo confidently ruled over the kitchen and put together meals for their fellow #bbnaija Housemates.

They seemed to be on the same wavelength when they decided to prepare a fish dish for the House. Trouble was that the fish was still frozen and difficult to pull out from the icy bucket it had been stored into.

Given that perseverance always pays off, it’s only after Nina offered to dislodge and defreeze the dinner that the cooking operation really started. Meanwhile hungry #bbnaija Housemates had started to swarm around the kitchen counter to snack on noodles while awaiting for the main dish.

Strengthened by their newly found creative endeavour, Miracle and Tobi kept returning to the kitchen where they seem to have found a new playground.

From chopping, to sprinkling spices, stirring and allowing his peers taste his preparations, Tobi only missed an apron and a chef’s hat to complete the act.

Likewise, Miracle did take to pounding without having cause for complaint as Anto, Lolu and Khloe sat nearby watching in disbelief and thankfulness for the feat of the duo which will somewhat ensure that they do not go hungry for the two weeks they have left in the house.

Yet after all the food fights that have taken place in the #bbnaija House, it was as if Housemates had decided to simply eat for the sake of not starving. With just two weeks left to the end of this season of big brother naija, everybody dived in the dough. After all, survival is the name of the Double Wahala game.

Report: Marcus Rashford Growing Frustrated At Manchester United

Featured Image

Marcus Rashford is growing increasingly frustrated at his lack of game-time at Manchester United, and could head for the exit door in the summer if this fringe role persists – the Mirror reports.

Marcus Rashford has started just five of the last 16 games for United, and after featuring for just eight minutes against rivals City, a source has told the paper that Rashford may not be at Old Trafford next season if Jose Mourinho remains in charge.

Rashford has been at United since the age of seven, has progressed through their ranks to the first-team without going out on loan and is understood to have no desire to turn his back on his boyhood club.

But Mourinho’s reluctance to give him a sustained run in the side is an ongoing issue that is likely to come to a head if it continues, with Rashford unwilling to accept being a bit-part player much longer.

A United source said: “Marcus was really unhappy with being left out for the derby.

If Mourinho is still there next season, Marcus might not be, as he wants to start every game.”

Rashford is also said to be unhappy at playing on the right side, with Sanchez having made the left side his own since his arrival and Lukaku immovable up front as the first-choice central striker.

FG Expresses Concern Over Killings Of Nigerians In UK

The federal government on Monday expressed worry over increasing spate of killing of Nigerians in UK in recent time.

Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, expressed government’s position on the matter in a statement by her Media Aide, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, in Abuja.

Israel Ogunsola: Another Nigerian Stabbed To Death In London

Mrs Dabiri-Erewa advised Nigerians to be careful and exercise restraint.

She said “the increased killing of blacks, especially those of Nigerian origin in London was worrisome and disturbing.”

She said it was reported that more than 50 blacks, mainly youth, were either stabbed or gunned down in the first quarter of 2018 in London alone.

The presidential aide added that Nigerian boys killed in the UK in the first quarter of 2018, mainly London, included Oluwadamilola Odeyingbo, 18, Taofeek Lamidi, 20, and Harry Uzoka, 25.

Others were Rotimi Oshinbajo, 26, Fola Odubiyi, 18, Niyi Shode, 24, Kelvin Odunuyi, 19, Abraham Badru, 26, Israel Ogunsola, 18, and more unreported cases.

Mrs Dabiri-Erewa had last week written protest letter to the British High Commissioner in Nigeria, demanding justice and investigation into the matter.

She, however, advised Nigerians to continue to be good ambassadors of Nigeria by obeying the rules of their host country and not to take laws into their hands.

She condoled with the affected families and prayed unto God to comfort them.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) quoted her as saying that the government would continue to seek for justice and bring to book the perpetrators of the gruesome killings.

Ilkay Gundogan Had Barcelona Medical Before He Joined Manchester City

Featured Image

Barcelona had agreed a deal to sign Ilkay Gundogan in 2015, reports Mundo Deportivo.

Barca were long-term admirers of the Germany midfielder and reached an agreement with Dortmund over a €20m deal to secure his services back in 2015, one year before he eventually left the Bundesliga outfit to join Manchester City.

Ilkay Gundogan, who passed a medical at Barca, was excited about the prospect of moving to the Camp Nou, even though he would have not been able to play for six months as the Catalan giants were subject to a FIFA-imposed transfer ban at the time.

However, in the end, then-Barca coach Luis Enrique opted to sign Arda Turan instead of Gundogan and the move fell through.
