Buhari: Four More Years Of Administrative Surrogacy?

Buhari: Four More Years Of Administrative Surrogacy?, By Bámidélé Adémólá-Olátéjú

CLICK here to read more opinion articles

Buhari, despite his self-induced political inertia and operational impotence has announced he will run again. He is on track to seek re-election for the presidency of Nigeria. Despite his mind-numbing failures and with nothing to show for almost three years in office, except his botched anti-corruption fight, his appointed cabal has propped him up for another run. Despite, spiraling insecurity, unrestrained nepotism and cronyism that have come to define his presidency, despite the fake anti-corruption fight and ill-health, he is set to run again. It is actually happening, before our very eyes. Buhari’s intent to run, is a deft maneuver by his cabal. Of course, there is so much disaffection in the land, a feeling that has swelled the rank of millions of those who want to stop his second coming.

This piece was written by Bámidélé Adémólá-Olátéjú. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

There has been a lot of noise about who is the alternative to Buhari? That is an insult to 170 million Nigerians. We know the power of incumbency. We understand what it means for an anti-development and desperate cabal to stay in power. We know how powerfully they can deploy the federal might to intimidate opponents and rig elections. But we have seen it all before, haven’t we? Whoever is coming on board to challenge Buhari and his cabal, need to know what they are up against. The plan for Buhari to run a second time had been on from day one. With an eye on re-election, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was re-engineered as a conclave for cronies, the nation’s entire security architecture was put in his pocket, but due to no fault of his, the judiciary has evacuated its own consciousness, the opposition has been in disarray and whatever is left of them is struggling to stay awake.

What then may we look for in an election in the Age of Buhari? Given the fissures in his party – the All Progressives Congress (APC), escalating insecurity in the land, questions about Buhari’s deteriorating health and his incurable tribalism, Buhari’s second-term prospects are less than bright. Of course, 2019 is around the corner, but it is not difficult to see how Buhari can lose. The need for fresh faces and a fresh approach to governance in 2019 looms ever larger. Buhari’s insensitivity and the general unease about his administration of Nigeria through surrogacy has activated a portion of the electorate with deep dislike for his sectarianism. Many who supported and campaigned for him are angry at the turn his administration took and the huge disappointment he has been. Who might these new faces be and what might those new approaches be? The opposition might be well advised to skip over aspirants who cannot set our pulses racing. What is needed to challenge Buhari is a younger politician stocked with potentials but without any rapsheet of corruption, on a party platform with a programmatic appeal that will highlight Buhari’s ineptitude. The opposition need to get their acts together. Who are those left in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)? Who are the masquerades behind SDP? Opposition to Buhari should not be about who Fayose or Femi Fani-Kayode is insulting nor where President Obasanjo is tilting. It should not depend on what time of the day it is. Opposition should be the alternative to the killings in Zamfara, the robbery in Offa that left thousands dead, Buhari’s naked sectarianism and slow cooking failures. Opposition should be about popular propositions that will make life easy for the majority of Nigerians.

The challenge for the opposition is building a good coalition and creating a populist slogan of opportunity, accountability and responsibility. Nigerians want an easy to understand, coherent economic view and aggressive reforms to make governance better. We all want jobs, education, power, infrastructure, health and security. We want a party who will put forward able candidates, who will eloquently put these ideas in the front and centre. Buhari will have no energy to traverse this country, shake hands, knock on doors, visit churches and mosques in canvassing for votes. While we wish the president good health, drawing voters attention to his health issues and how it has affected governance is fair game. We should make his absence from governance and his self-confessed lack of awareness on issues subjects of concern. Nigeria is too big and consequential in the region, in Africa and indeed the whoke world, to be governed by feckless surrogates.

All a winning candidate needs is a robust economic platform with a vision for government accountability and responsibility. The forces responsible for Buhari’s victory outside the North-West and North-East are fed on development and hypermodernity. Millennials are growing as the largest generation of eligible voters in 2019. They want development NOW and are impatient. What the opposition should look for is a candidate who will split votes in Kano, Sokoto and Maiduguri in that order. With the exception of Niger, the North-Central is up for grabs. The battleground is the South-West and it is ground zero for discontent against Buhari. Buhari can be defeated. What the opposition needs to do now is to start reaching out to every Nigerian, pointing out Buhari’s failures. They should be telling Nigerians that with Buhari, Nigeria is a killing field, but with them, Nigeria will become a safe place to live and thrive in!

Scores Killed As Gunmen Attack Zamfara Again

Featured Image

Some unknown gunmen have on Wednesday attacked two villages in Anka Local Government Area of Zamfara, killing scores of people.

The bandits attacked a mining site at Kuru-kuru village and also ambushed some people from the neighbouring Jarkuka village as they mobilised to bring help to Kuru-kuru.

A witness, Sadi Musa, said scores of people were killed at the mining site on Wednesday evening which forced the miners to flee for safety.

Herdsmen Murder 36 Persons In Benue, Taraba

Mr Musa said when residents from the nearby Jarkuka came later to join the Kuru-kuru survivors in burying the dead, the gunmen attacked again, and killed more people.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, DSP Mohammed Shehu said, “we are aware of the attack but I cannot give you details now until my commissioner is fully briefed’’.

The bandits had attacked Bawan Daji village in the same Anka Local Government Area two weeks ago and killed over 30 people.

They returned the following day and killed mourners at a grave yard.

This led to the deployment of Air Force and Army personnel to the area to contain the situation.

The soldiers had since swung into action and killed several bandits.

Herdsmen Murder 36 Persons In Benue, Taraba

Featured Image

Some suspected Fulani Herdsmen on Tuesday night attacked Gbeji and Tswarev communities in Ukum and Logo council areas of Benue State, killing no fewer than 11 persons.

The names of those killed, according to community sources, include Mtserkyaa lgbugh; Kananfa Amarfu; Tyavyar Akau; Orfega Hiikyaa; Kanyitor Uor; a suspected unidentified septuagenarian among others.

An eyewitness told The Guardian that several houses were torched and property worth millions of naira destroyed.

Speaking to the news outlet, two residents of Gbeji, Abraham Ngyenev and Abraham Azawe, disclosed that the attack began at about 6p.m. when the herdsmen invaded their farms and destroyed crops for over three hours.

In the same vein, it was gathered that three other persons were attacked and killed by nomads in some settlements in Tswarev, Logo Local Council, while injuring scores. The two council areas border each other.

In Logo, the affected communities were Channel One, Orveren and Ajura villages where Tor Imbor; Aondowua Mnyor and Msugh Ajura were feared dead in addition to several injuries and burning of houses by the assailants.

Meanwhile, Governor Samuel Ortom has described the attacks as an extension of the terrorism perpetrated by Boko Haram.

He spoke yesterday in Makurdi while reacting to the renewed mayhem in parts of the state.

The governor stated that the manner in which the armed men invade the communities and slaughter innocent people was not different from the “mindless acts” of Boko Haram in the North East.

He said: “They come with sophisticated weapons and kill people. Machete and chase them away.”

Ortom said equally disturbing was the pattern of attacks whereby the armed militias occupy communities after killing and sacking the inhabitants.

He went on: “In some cases, they do not have the herds. They just come with their weapons, kill and chase the people out and take over the land and that is the worrisome part of it.”

While in Jandeikyula village of Wukari local government area of Taraba state, no less than 25 persons have been killed in fresh attacks by suspected herdsmen.

Witnesses told TheCable that the suspects stormed the village around 7pm on Wednesday.

A resident who identified himself as Victor said that the attackers who were over 200 took the villagers unaware, adding that many houses were set ablaze in the attack.

In his own narration, Adi Grace, chairman of the local government, confirmed the attack to reporters but said he could not give casualty figures.

“Many people were killed in the attack. As I am speaking with you now, I don’t have the casualty figure until when I am back from the village because I am on my way there now,” he said.

Commenting on the attack, Luka Agbo, former chairman of the Wukari Youths of Vision, said: “It is true that Jandeikyula village was attacked night and from the reports we are getting, over thirty people were killed.”

“The series of attacks in the state now make us to be living in fear because we can no longer go to bed with our two eyes closed.”

Primary Assignment! NYSC To Post Corps Members To Farms

Featured Image

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has said that it will include farming and crop production as part of the one-year primary assignment for corps members from the next service year.

This disclosure was made by Bello Ballama, the NYSC FCT Coordinator, during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Thursday, April 12, 2018.

According to him, the move was to help address corps rejection by some employers through the engagement of more corps members in all aspects of farming and crop production.

The coordinator said that the move was also aimed at boosting the NYSC Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) Programme.

Mr Ballama said the scheme was therefore putting all its farms in good condition in readiness for corps members to commence its use.

“Corps members will be involved in all aspects of farming and crop production.

“This will not only support skills acquisition of NYSC but also governments plan of boosting agricultural production to improve self-reliance and achieve national growth and development.

“From this 2018 Batch ‘A’ Stream I set of corps members who are commencing orientation on April 19, we are going to look into all the farm formations and centres to be able to post corps members there.

“We have farms in the FCT and many other states of the country; the present leadership of the scheme is poised to ensuring the revival of all NYSC facilities including the farms.

“The NYSC is faced with the challenge of engaging the increasing number of corps members mobilised every year.”

He said that the scheme was still faced with the challenge of corps members being rejected by organisations they were posted to carry out their one-year primary assignment.

The coordinator said that in spite of discussion the scheme had with corps employers not to reject corps members, the NYSC was still faced with the problem every year.

He said that some corps employers do not provide accommodation and transportation to corps members who are left to suffer harsh living conditions.

“We have held a workshop with corps employers and have interacted with them and we look forward to a better relationship and working environment for corps members in the next year,” he said.

Giuliano Terraneo Appointed As New Technical Consultant At West Brom

Featured Image

West Brom have appointed Italian sporting director Giuliano Terraneo as a technical consultant, just hours after firing technical director Nick Hammond.

Nick Hammond became the latest casualty of West Brom’s calamitous campaign following the sackings in February of chief executive Martin Goodman and chairman John Williams and the more recent departure of head coach Alan Pardew.

Chief executive Mark Jenkins, Goodman’s successor, said on the club website: “Giuliano joins us in what we all acknowledge will be a very important close season.

“He will assist in the recruitment of a new head coach and the re-structure of the squad. In the event of our losing Premier League status, it will be a squad we will want to compete strongly for promotion back to the top tier.

“Giuliano will assist in the recruitment long-term of a new sporting and technical director and he will also be involved in the complete review of the recruitment department.”

Terraneo has joined West Brom on an initial six-month deal, which will be reviewed. The former goalkeeper has worked in similar roles in Italy at Monza, Lazio and Inter Milan, and has also been sporting director at Turkish club Fenerbahce.

He said: “I am pleased to be able to accept the opportunity to help the club and its owners in the work ahead.

“West Bromwich Albion is a club with its own personality and it is important that everyone we recruit wants to work to that.”

Stoke City Manager Paul Lambert Remains Silent About The Absence Of Jese Rodriguez At The Club

Featured Image

Stoke manager Paul Lambert refused to comment on reports on-loan Paris Saint-Germain forward Jese has failed to report for training.

There were claims on Thursday that Jese Rodriguez had not returned from his latest spell of compassionate leave to visit his sick son in Spain, which he was expected to do on Wednesday.

Jese has not featured in Stoke’s squad for the last two matches and his last appearance was as a substitute in the defeat to Everton on March 17.

However, Lambert refused to speak about the player or Saido Berahino, who is training with the club’s under-23s

“I am just going to concentrate on Monday’s game,” he said when asked about Jese. “The exact same [answer] for Saido.

“The team is playing really well. The supporters are right behind us and my main concern is the West Ham game.”

Tottenham Manager Mauricio Pochettino Insists Toby Alderweireld Still Has A Future At The Club

Featured Image

Mauricio Pochettino has said that he is “sure” Toby Alderweireld will play for Tottenham before the end of the season.

Toby Alderweireld has not played a Premier League game for Tottenham since the end of October despite the fact that he has already recovered from a hamstring problem since the early stages of 2018.

Alderweireld played for Belgium during the recent international break, but has not been involved in Spurs’ last two matches against Chelsea and Stoke City.

The 29-year-old will see his current deal with Tottenham expire next summer, and it is understood that he is refusing to sign the offer on the table, which has led to a host of speculation.

Pochettino, however, has insisted that he would have no problems selecting the Belgian.

“I think we make a drama sometimes for small things,” Pochettino told reporters. “After 14 games unbeaten there’s no point talking about a player that did not play and was injured for a long time. Toby is still our player [with a] two-year contract.

“I’m sure he’s going to play [before] the end of the season. He’s doing well, he’s training and he only needs to wait for his opportunity.”

#BBNaija 2018 Day 73: What Went Wrong With The Couples?

Featured Image

In the first few weeks of the #bbnaija game, it was pretty evident that the Big Brother Naija couples had distinguished themselves from their fellow Housemates and they were set on a path of romantic adventure.

Even though the #bbnaija Housemates were paired and played the game in two’s, those who had a mutual understanding outside the game made it clear. From there on, it was #CoupleGoals every day and for quite sometime, as it seemed like they had thrown their strategies out the window and were focusing solely on love.

Two days into the game, Miracle and Nina found each other and were the first to mark each other unavailable in the #bbnaija House as they gave us the first Double Wahala Kiss.

Before the pairing of the #bbnaija Housemates happened, they were already all over each other as if they had been doing this for long. That first hook up paved the way for other Housemates to follow suit and Tobi and Cee-C were next.

When official pairing came, it wasn’t debatable for the two pairs as to whom they’d pair with, everything flowed naturally. We were introduced to the birth of Ceebi and Mina.

Though it was smooth sailing for Mina and Ceebi, for Lolu, who had been partnered with Anto, it was an entirely different story. Both are practically seen as observant intellectuals in the #bbnaija House, which perhaps informs the reason why Anto made it difficult for him and never gave in to his advances until she got Evicted.

Things started crumbling between Tobi and Cee-C and almost every week there’d be a quarrel which would lead to silent treatment on both ends. Things took a turn for the worst when Tobi decided to go solo, something Cee-C never saw coming. The end of their relationship was sealed when the two decided to have nothing to do with each other.

However, Nina and Miracle had a solid thing going on which everyone was aware of and no Housemate dared try to rock the boat.

The demise of Ceebi, reminded everyone of the uncertainty of the Big Brother game and when Anto returned from Eviction, Lolu’s courage seemed to have grown more.

His efforts weren’t just words and even though Anto’s advantage of being able to learn things about him from outside were tabled, he finally reaped the fruits of his persistence. They sealed the cat and mouse game with a kiss.

For Nina, it appears she has her own interpretation of the word ‘friendship’ and this has caused a rattle between her and Miracle. And even though she’s explained herself, the gap seems to be growing between them.

However, she seems to have reached her quota of begging and is letting the whole situation play itself out.

Anto on the other hand, has made it clear to Lolu that the kiss basically meant nothing after telling him that on her return to the #bbnaija House, he’s only gained fifteen percent of her trust.

As things stand, after Nina told Miracle to “go hang”, in not so many words, there are no couples left in the #bbnaija House and all the goals they’ve given may have as well been in vain.

The big question is “What went wrong?”

#BBNaija 2018 Day 73: All The Alcohol Problems In The House

Featured Image

The #BBNaija Housemates definitely enjoy taking their alcohol, as they sure know how to have a rollicking good time, with some pints in their system!

But what’s even better than donning your sparkly party pants and cutting a rug, you ask? The fact that the #bbnaija Housemates knock it back in moderation primarily, take care of each other like siblings mostly and make safety a priority.

Here’s a list of all the times an alcohol night has somewhat helped to offer some of the best entertainment the #bbnaija house has seen.

There was a time a distressed K.Brule got to drink too much then flung himself off a balcony, earning K_square a Strike, barely a week in the #bbnaija house. The pair ended up racking up two more and were subsequently sent packing. As fate would have it, Khloe bounced right back six weeks later, courtesy of #BBBringBack.

Furthermore, when Alex wailed through Leo’s Eviction like someone had died, then proceeded to booze-up for the very first time that week, perhaps to help her deal.

When two bulls fight, the grass suffers – and when Cee-C and Tobi imbibe? The whole #bbnaija house comes to a stand-still. From accusations, raised voices and the requisite trudging off in a huff, these two never failed to give their fellow Housemates and us a show, after every single party. The tense tiffs became so frequent, their relationship came to a dead halt.

Princess’ legendary post-party ice cream lick-offs. All the things you can do with Dessert and a warm, willing and nicely soused body was all that Princess presented during her time in the #bbnaija house.

Furthermore, every time resident house chef Rico Swavey’s hard-partying, dirty dancing alter-ego made an appearance after a drink or two, other #bbnaija housemates have had to clean up after him.

Harry Kane Wouldn’t Lie About A Goal- Mauricio Pochettino

Featured Image

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino has insisted that Harry Kane’s determination to take a goal away from teammate Christian Eriksen “is not a big deal” for Tottenham Hotspur.

Harry Kane was eventually awarded Tottenham’s second goal against Stoke City

The Premier League’s Goal Accreditation Appeals Panel ruled that Eriksen’s attempted cross touched the English striker on its way past Jack Butland, taking him up to 25 for the league season – four short of leading scorer Salah.

Despite Harry Kane being mocked by some for his strong appeal to have the goal taken away from one of his teammates, Pochettino says that both players were likely in full agreement.

“We didn’t talk about it. Of course after the match Harry Kane said he touched the ball with his right shoulder,” he told reporters at his weekly press conference.

“Harry is very honest and he is not going to lie about this situation. It is not a big issue, it is not a big deal for the team. It was a club decision, I was not involved, but I am sure Harry and Christian Eriksen agreed on this.”

Gabriel Jesus Admits Liverpool Deserved Victory Over Manchester City

Featured Image

Manchester City striker Gabriel Jesus has described Liverpool as “a great team” and admits that his team deserved to be eliminated at the quarter-final stage of the Champions League.

Manchester City suffered a 5-1 aggregate defeat at the hands of Liverpool this week, they have now lost three matches on the spin, having also gone down 3-2 to Manchester United in the Premier League last weekend, and Jesus fears that the gloss has been taken off his side’s achievements this term.

“It’s difficult because the last three defeats, unfortunately, overshadow what we have been doing during all season,” he told reporters. “We must keep our heads up because we weren’t knocked out playing badly.

“We were knocked out by a great team and a great club. Congratulate them again because they deserved it. Nobody likes to lose, we are disappointed especially because it’s a knockout competition.

“This is football, these things happen, we congratulate Liverpool for going through. We have no regrets and we don’t have time to regret either, in football, you don’t have time for that, as we have another great game on Saturday.”

Marcus Rashford is said to be considering his future at Manchester United after becoming frustrated with his lack of starts since Alexis Sanchez joined the club during the January transfer window.

However, according to ESPN FC, United are not prepared to sell the England international, and will reject any offers that arrive in this summer’s transfer window.

Rashford has appeared in 97 of United’s 112 matches since Jose Mourinho arrived as head coach, but the attacker has struggled to hold down a starting position in the Portuguese’s first XI this season.

The Big Brother Housemates exemplify the saying ‘When the going gets tough, the tough get going’ because of the trials they’ve all had to endure through their journey in the #bbnaija house.

Each of the #bbnaija Housemates remaining have a story to tell and if they haven’t learned anything from it, they became stronger.

With each housemate possessing individual traits that make them stand out from the rest, if they were asked to write books about themseleves, they will surely produce best sellers.

More so, their stay in the #bbnaija house wasn’t in vain because friendships were formed (even though others didn’t work) and that inadvertently becomes a part of the history they wrote.

Whether it’s part of a task or just a random conversation, the #bbnaija Housemates surely brought laughter and continue doing so on a daily.

One of the most important and entertaining partnerships formed is that of Tobi, Miracle and Alex, ‘Toralex’. The trio has been keeping the Big Brother House alive with their jokes and energy which sometimes transfers to others.

On the other end, most of them have cried us rivers in their efforts to give us Double Wahala and shown that they’re human too.

Whether participating in a game of chance for the Head of House title or an effort driven task like the Arena games, the effort from the #bbnaija Housemates has been to say the least, amazing.

Even though others drove themselves more, it still has been a journey they’ll look back at and pat themselves in the back for the effort they put in.

The Frenchman made a big call to substitute Gareth Bale and believes it played a part in getting his side back into the match: “I took Bale off because we had to change it around. The INEC chairman who is also the President, ECOWAS Network of Electoral Commissions (ECONEC), however, also said:

“The brainstorming was to look at the adoption of technology in all the areas of electoral process and how to provide secure platform for the transmission of election results without hindrance.

“We are to deploy technology within our various legal frameworks within the regions. Election is not just about technology, it is about the confidence of the people in the electoral process.”

He said with the efforts being made to improve the electoral process, elections were going beyond the capacity of electoral commission to manipulate.

Prof. Yakubu, who reiterated his position that the deployment of technology in the conduct of elections had come to stay, added that the essence of the conference was to enable mutually beneficial discussions and strategy and share experience.

How Danish Husband Murdered Nigerian Artiste Wife, Alizee And Daughter – Police Tells Court

Featured Image

Danish man, Peter Nielsen, who was suspected of killing his wife, a fast-rising Nigerian singer, Zainab Ali- Nielsen and their three-and-a-half-year-old daughter, Petra has been remanded in prison by a Yaba Magistrate Court.

Chief Magistrate Kikelomo Ayeye remanded Nielsen, 53, in Ikoyi Prison, following an application by the police. Nielsen was docked on a two-count charge of unlawful killing.

Prosecuting counsel, Effiong Asuquo, tendered a three-page application, containing 15 grounds for Nielsen’s remand in prison.

He said:

“There is overwhelming forensic evidence linking the defendant to the assault and murder of his wife and daughter. Investigation has also shown that the defendant was habitually violent to his late wife, Zainab.”

According to Asuquo, a fight broke out between the couple in their flat at about 3:00 a.m. on that fateful day. Nielsen was allegedly seen fighting and hitting the deceased’s head on a wall by her two relations, Mimi, 11, and Faith, 13 who lived with them.

She died from injuries sustained from the assault. The prosecutor alleged that Nielsen then poisoned Petra before dragging her body into the kitchen.

Asuquo added;

“He took the lifeless little girl and put her under the mother’s body and then put on gas stove burners in the kitchen so that it will be believed that the wife and daughter were suffocated to death by the cooking gas.

It is in the national interest that the suspect remain in prison pending legal advice and his arraignment and trial.”

Chief Magistrate Ayeye upheld his prayer as Nielsen’s plea through his lawyer Frank Udoka Amah was rejected.

The Chief Magistrate remanded Nielsen in prison and adjourned the case till May 8 for the DPP’s advice.
