Hector Bellerin Hints At Arsenal Stay After Requesting For New Jersey Number

Featured Image

Hector Bellerin has made the clearest indication yet that he has no plans to leave Arsenal after revealing he has asked to wear the number two shirt next season.

Despite signing a new Gunners contract last season which runs until 2023, the Spaniard has been consistently linked with a departure from the Emirates Stadium.

Bellerin’s agent revealed last month that, though there is always interest in the 23-year-old, no offers have been made, and that the defender is happy in North London.

The Spain international has worn the number 24 since breaking into Arsenal’s first team in 2015 but now has his sights set on the shirt previously worn by Mathieu Debuchy.

In an interview on the club’s official YouTube page, Bellerin said: “In the summer, I’m going to ask for the number two shirt. I’ve already spoken to Vic [Akers, kit man], he knows.”

Hector Bellerin has been a mainstay in the Arsenal side this season, making 42 appearances in all competitions.

Michael Keane Feeling More Settled At Everton Since Sam Allardyce Arrival

Featured Image

Everton defender Michael Keane has stressed that he has been “a lot more settled” at the club since Sam Allardyce became manager.

Michael Keane  initially struggled at Everton following his £25.6m move from Burnley last summer.

Likewise, Everton were in trouble earlier in the season but, since the arrival of Allardyce in November, they have climbed to eighth in the table and are safe from relegation.

Despite Allardyce being booed by the Toffees faithful on a number of occasions this season due to what has been perceived as a dour style of play, Keane has defended his manager.

“I felt comfortable at Everton straight away,” Keane told The Mirror. “I settled in nicely, but then things did not go well for the team for a few months.

“It was a tough period for everyone and I was part of that. Hopefully I’m coming out of that now and I feel I have been doing consistently well over the past month or so. Those tough experiences can only make you stronger and more determined not to go through the same thing again.

“I’ve been a lot more settled since the manager came in and I know what my role is in the team. You want to be clear-minded and understand your role and responsibilities going into a game. That’s how it is with the manager here.”

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has moved to clarify comments made earlier on Wednesday when he appeared to indicate that the decision to leave Arsenal “wasn’t really my decision

Timing Of Arsenal Departure ‘Not Really My Decision’ – Arsene Wenger

Speaking ahead of the first leg of the Europa League semi-final against Atletico Madrid, which comes at home on Thursday night, Wenger said the news was forced upon him.

“The timing wasn’t really my decision,” he admitted. “For the rest, I have spoken about it already.”

Reports suggested that Arsene Wenger decided to quit rather than be sacked by the board at the end of the season, despite having another year left on his contract.

Arsenal have now released a statement on Twitter indicating that Wenger was referring to the time of the announcement rather than the actual decision.

“After reaching agreement about my departure, I was happy for the club to decide when to announce. I wish to make it clear the timing of the announcement was right,” Wenger said.

I’m Having My Best Ever Season – David De Gea

Featured Image

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has said that he’s been “pretty pleased” with his performances this season.

De Gea has kept 17 clean sheets in the top flight and the Spaniard has admitted that he has felt in “good form” throughout the campaign.

The 27-year-old told Premier League Productions: “I’m pretty pleased with my performance. It’s been a fairly complete, all round set of performances from me.

“I’ve felt good, felt fit and in good form physically throughout the season. Let’s hope that these last few games to go before the end of the season continue the form, then leading into the World Cup, which is an important time for Spain.”

After being shortlisted for the PFA Player of the Year award, and being named in the PFA Team of the Year for the fifth time, it’s been another stellar campaign for De Gea, who also looks likely to be named United’s Player of the Year for the fourth time in five seasons.

De Gea credited Jose Mourinho with instilling a “winning mentality” in the side, but said the players still had to live up to his standards.

“We’ve got a great manager,” De Gea added. “He’s very experienced, he’s won everything there is to win in the game. What he is really good at is transmitting his winning mentality to the group.

” However, at the end of the day, it’s down to ourselves – the players on the field. It is us who make the saves, create the chances and score the goals. So, as a group, we’ve got to get that level of consistency and quality throughout the season.”

Mohamed Salah The Best Player On The Planet – Steven Gerrard

Featured Image

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has hailed Mohamed Salah as “the best player on the planet” after his extraordinary season continued with two goals and a pair of assists in Tuesday’s 5-2 Champions League win over Roma.

Salah scored a stunning opening goal at Anfield as Liverpool took a giant step towards the final, adding another before the break and then setting up strikes by Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino.

Liverpool great Gerrard, an analyst at the match, told BT Sport nobody in the world, including Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi, was playing better than 42-goal Salah.

“He’s in the form of his life,” he said.

“It’s difficult to compare him to your Ronaldos and Messis because they’ve done it for so long and they’ve been consistent year in, year out.

“But, without a shadow of a doubt, he is the best player on the planet right now.”

Salah’s latest Man of the Match performance means he has now scored in each of his last five Champions League starts, equaling Gerrard’s club record.

His 42-goal haul for the season so far means he is second only to legendary striker Ian Rush for the most goals scored in a season by a Liverpool player, with Rush netting 47 times in 1983-84.

I Can Handle The Pressure – Mohamed Salah

Featured Image

Mohamed Salah has enjoyed an outstanding debut season on Merseyside, scoring 43 goals in just 47 appearances for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Mohamed Salah has played in numerous high-pressure games for club and country, including Champions League knockout clashes and World Cup qualifiers, but he insists that he is used to the pressure.

“This is my life, it’s an easy life,” Salah told CNN. “It’s not complicated. I have nothing much to do during the day but it’s a responsibility in the end.

“You have to take it easy and carry on. I’m not nervous about that. It’s also a little bit difficult because you don’t have the freedom to make mistakes or something wrong.

“That’s pressure but when you’ve been under pressure for many years you can deal with it. It’s fine.”

Bayern Munich 1-2 Real Madrid: Marco Asensio’s Second-half Strike Gives Real Madrid The Edge

Featured Image

Real Madrid came from behind to see off Bayern Munichi n Germany, thanks to substitute Marco Asensio’s cool second-half goal

Marco Asensio’s 11th goal of the campaign, 12 minutes into the second period, means Jupp Heynckes’ perfect record of only ever reaching the final is in serious doubt ahead of next week’s second leg.

Bayern were hit with an early injury blow as veteran winger Arjen Robben was forced off, the ex-Barcelona midfielder Thiago Alcantara replacing him

Real Madrid  were second best for much of the first half after Bayern took the lead through Joshua Kimmich, but the hosts could not build on that advantage despite creating a number of clear chances.

Neither side were anywhere near their brilliant best on the night, but Marcelo‘s equaliser against the run of play just before half time ensured Madrid went into the break all square, and Marco Asensio came off the bench to add a second away goal and leave the Spanish giants in the driving seat.

Mohamed Eleny To Be Fit In Time For The World Cup

Featured Image

Mohamed Elneny should be fit in time for the World Cup but is likely to miss the rest of Arsenal’s season, manager Arsene Wenger has confirmed

Mohamed Elneny damaged ligaments in his left ankle after landing awkwardly in a 4-1 win over West Ham United at the Emirates on Sunday and there had been initial fears that the Egypt international’s World Cup campaign could be in danger.

However, Wenger eased those concerns at his news conference on Wednesday by saying Elneny could even be back for the team’s final Premier League game at Huddersfield Town on May 13.

“Mohamed Elneny is [probably] out for the rest of the season. He has a little, little chance to play at Huddersfield,” Wenger said. “But I think he will be available for Egypt at the World Cup, but not anymore for Arsenal.”

Elneny is one of Egypt’s key players, having started all six of their World Cup qualifiers and 11 of their 14 full internationals in 2017.

Roma Strongly Condemn Fan Behaviour That Left Liverpool Fan Fighting For His Life

Featured Image

Roma have released a statement to ‘strongly condemn’ an attack on a Liverpool supporter ahead of the Champions League fixture between the two clubs on Tuesday night.

Less than an hour before kickoff at Anfield, a group of Roma fans launched an unprovoked attack on Liverpool supporters who were situated outside of The Albert pub, which is in close proximity to their Merseyside ground.

Video footage and images have since emerged on social media, and Merseyside Police has said that a 53-year-old has been left in a critical condition after a blow of the head.

Roma have now moved to acknowledge the incident, saying that the attack – by a “small minority” of fans – had brought “shame” on the club.

A statement read: “AS Roma condemns in the strongest possible terms the abhorrent behavior of a small minority of travelling fans who brought shame on the club and the vast majority of Roma’s well-behaved supporters at Anfield after getting involved in clashes with Liverpool supporters before last night’s fixture.

“There is no place for this type of vile behavior in football and the club is now cooperating with Liverpool Football Club, UEFA and the authorities.

“The club’s thoughts and prayers are with the 53-year-old Liverpool fan in hospital and his family at this time.”

A Uefa spokesman added: “The perpetrators of this ignominious attack have no place in and around football and we trust they will be dealt with utmost severity by the authorities.”

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson posted a message on Instagram in which he wrote: “The thoughts and prayers of all the players are with the Liverpool fan who is currently very poorly in hospital after being badly hurt ahead of our game last night.

“He came to watch a football match and support our team — the only result that matters to us now is that he recovers and can return home to be with his family and loved ones. You’ll Never Walk Alone.”

Liverpool Prioritise Supporter Safety As Fan Is Left In Critical Condition After Clashe With Roma Fans

Featured Image
Liverpool insist the safety of fans remains their priority as they continue to assist the investigation into the serious assault of a man before their Champions League semi-final first leg at home to Roma.
Two men from Rome, aged 25 and 26, have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a 53-year-old Reds fan was attacked outside Anfield shortly before kick-off.
The man, understood to be from Ireland, was at the game with his brother and is believed to have been hit will a belt and fallen. He is now being treated at Walton Neurological Centre where his condition is described as critical, according to Merseyside Police.

A JustGiving page has been set up to raise £5,000 for the stricken fan while the club – who in an earlier statement said they were “shocked and appalled” – have already promised their full support for his family and are continuing to help with enquiries.

“Liverpool Football Club will continue to work closely with the relevant authorities to establish an understanding of the facts, following a serious and disturbing incident at Anfield last night which has left a 53-year-old supporter in a critical condition in hospital,” said a statement.

“The club’s first priority is the safety of all fans attending matches.

“Supporters attending a game should never be subjected to an environment of violence or attack.

“Liverpool would like to thank the emergency services and members of its own supporter base who offered care and treatment to the stricken victim in the immediate aftermath.

“The club would again remind anyone who has relevant information that will assist Merseyside Police to make contact via the channels identified by the constabulary.”

Merseyside Police made nine arrests in total and of the five men from Italy, two are being questioned about attempted murder, one for affray and possession of an offensive weapon, another for possession of an offensive weapon and another for criminal damage inside Anfield.

One of the five was detained for affray and possession of an offensive weapon, another for possession of an offensive weapon and a third for criminal damage inside Anfield.

Four men from the UK were arrested on suspicion of assault, affray, being drunk and disorderly and possession of a class A drug.

UEFA, waiting for reports before deciding on disciplinary charges, said it was “deeply shocked by the vile attack.”

“The perpetrators of this ignominious attack have no place in and around football and we trust they will be dealt with the utmost severity by the authorities,” a statement said.

Timing Of Arsenal Departure ‘Not Really My Decision’ – Arsene Wenger

Featured Image

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has admitted that the timing of hisl departure “was not really my decision,” but said he will definitely continue working in football.

Arsene Wenger announced last Friday that he will end his reign as Arsenal manager after his 22nd season in charge but has so far refused to reveal his full reasons for stepping down.

Asked again during his news conference on Wednesday on why he is stepping down now — despite his contract running until 2019 — Wenger replied: “The timing was not really my decision. And for the rest I’ve spoken about it already.”

He said after Sunday’s win over West Ham that the “hurtful” divisions among fans about his future had contributed to his decision.

Wenger also said he will not entertain any new job offers until his work with Arsenal is over, but made it clear that he has no intention to retire.

“Honestly, I don’t know what I will do,” Wenger said ahead of the first leg of the Europa League semifinal against Atletico Madrid. “Will I take a little rest? I will continue to work, that is for sure. My pride has always been to give my best to where I’m employed until the last day of my contract.

“At the moment I’m just focused on that. At the moment, I’m not ready to commit to anything else than to give my best for Arsenal football club.”

Asked if he had any second thoughts about his announcement, Wenger said: “Look, you’re never sure you do the right thing, but life is interesting because you have to deal with different kinds of situations.

“Until now, I had a life that was full of different experiences. Some were very difficult to deal with, but I always did it. That’s another one certainly I will face one day.”

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain To Miss World Cup With Knee Injury

Featured Image

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has suffered a “knee ligament injury” that will end his season with Liverpool and rule him out of the World Cup.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was stretchered off early in the first half of Liverpool’s 5-2 win over Roma in the first leg of the Champions League semifinal at Anfield on Tuesday.

The midfielder underwent a scan on Wednesday where it was confirmed he had sustained a ligament injury, after Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp had said after the game that the 24-year-old’s season was likely to be over,

Oxlade-Chamberlain had been in contention to earn a starting spot for England in Russia this summer, after playing in five of the Three Lions’ six World Cup qualifiers in 2017.

The former Arsenal man had been named in England’s 2014 World Cup squad as a 20-year-old, but he suffered a minor knee injury in a warm-up friendly and did not play in the tournament.

A source told ESPN FC that Oxlade-Chamberlain, who was present at Liverpool’s Melwood training ground on Wednesday, had personally called England manager Gareth Southgate to discuss the injury.

“Oxlade-Chamberlain’s season is over for both club and country due to a knee ligament injury sustained against Roma,” the club said in a statement . “The extent of the injury means he is set to miss the remainder of the campaign for Liverpool, as well as the World Cup finals in Russia with England.

“The 24-year-old was assessed by the club’s medical team on Wednesday morning and no specific timescale is being placed upon his return to action at this stage. However, Oxlade-Chamberlain will now begin a rehabilitation programme to enable him to reach full fitness again as soon as possible, returning to action next season.”

His injury leaves Liverpool with just three fit senior central midfielders — Jordan Henderson, James Milner and Georginio Wijnaldum. Emre Can still remains sidelined with the back injury that he sustained in March, while Adam Lallana continues his recovery from a hamstring injury.

Report: Chelsea Set To Impose An Even Tighter Budget On Antonio Conte Successor

Featured Image

Chelsea’s next manager will reportedly be bound by tighter budgetary restrictions than current manager Antonio Conte, according to the Evening Standard

Antonio Conte has continously spent this season launching a thinly-veiled criticism of Chelsea’s financial approach but it is not about to change soon.

The report states that Chelsea are currently mulling over offers from lenders to bankroll their plans for a new stadium, the cost of which is said to have doubled to around £1.2bn.

Depending on which financier they choose, the club could borrow anything between £300m and £850m.

Conte’s successor, however, will almost certainly find that the fiscal responsibility which has underpinned more recent years of the Roman Abramovich era is set to continue, curtailing the grossest largesse and relying increasingly on the raft of players on loan to either yield a profit or improve the first team.

Conte is not the first coach to bemoan a lack of spending from a position of strength — Jose Mourinho cited the same frustrations when following an identical pattern in winning the title before falling short of expectations.

And the next manager through the door at Stamford Bridge will live or die by adapting to this environment.

Atletico Madrid Manager Diego Simeone Speaks On Reports Linking Him To Arsenal Job

Featured Image

Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has distanced himself from the impoending managerial vacancy at Arsenal.

Diego Simeone  was one of several coaches touted as a potential replacement for the outgoing Arsene Wenger, but he has since moved to distance himself from the job.

Speaking to reporters during his pre-match press conference ahead of the Europa League meeting between Arsenal and Atletico, Simeone said that he has recieved no contact from the Gunners and insisted that he is “happy” in Madrid.

The Atletico head coach went on to express his admiration for Wenger.

“I see myself as quite a young coach still. I want to observe and learn from him and the best word is admiration when you look at the career Wenger has had,” he said.

“We are both coaches and it is very difficult to stay at this level as you’re always competing and putting yourself on the line.

“When your team do well people demand more victories but the position he has occupied in football is wonderful.”

“How I Paid For My Result At Nigeria Institute Of Journalism” – Korede Bello Opens Up

Featured Image

Following his graduation at the Nigerian Institute Of Journalism with distinction, Mavin act, Korede Bello has responded to critics who believe his academic success was bought.

The Singer took to Instagram to disclaim the allegation that he had paid some amount of money to get a distinction.

Korede wrote;

‘I initially didn’t want to post this for many reasons but I was wrong on all counts. I’d be doing millions of young people and my peers a disservice by not boldly putting it out there that impossiblity is a myth; you can be Talented and Distinguished; Famous and Dignified; Celebrated and Educated ; that you can be a MEGA SUPER STAR with a MEGA SUPER VISION. For this I am grateful to God’.

The Mavin Super Star added that, he worked hard all through his academic journey to prove to young Nigerians that being a celebrated artiste does not amount to academic breakdown.

In his words;

‘the main reason I endured to the finish line was because I needed to push myself and also to be a light for a lot of young Nigerians who think you cannot be an established Artiste and still achieve academic excellence.

I endured because #MyPeople needed a role model. A few days before I got signed I was still looking for tuition fees, so I understand the experience that some of you go through.

But just as HE came through for me , HE’ll come through for you. No, it wasn’t easy but it was worth it. I was graced and I’m grateful. And no, I didn’t buy my result but I paid for it.

Outrage As Herdsmen Kill Two Catholic Priests, 17 Worshippers Inside Church

Featured Image

Gunmen, suspected to be Fulani herdsmen, unleashed terror on Ukpor, Mbalom community in the Gwer East Local Government Area of Benue State on Tuesday, killing 19 persons, including two Rev. Fathers.

It is understood that the gunmen killed the two Catholic priests, Rev Fathers Joseph Gor and Felix Tyolaha, in an early hour attack on St Ignatius Quasi Parish in Ukpor.

Also among the victims were two school head teachers and a secondary school principal, identified as Peter Dick, Ape Chia and Michael Tor, respectively.

It was gathered that the Catholic faithful had gone for morning mass around 5.30am and unknown to them, the militia herdsmen had laid ambush in the community.

The armed men later surrounded the church and killed all the early callers in the church.

Confirming the attack on the church, The Director of Communications, Catholic Diocese of Makurdi, Rev. Father Moses Iorapuu, said,

“Rev. Father Joseph Gor and Rev. Father Felix Tyolaha have been killed in the deadly attack by herdsmen/Jihadists early today (Tuesday) in St. Ignatius Quasi parish in Ukpor-Mbalom in Mbalom village.”

Iorapuu, who stated that the herdsmen also burnt down homes, destroyed foodstuffs, said, “to go for the priests means total destruction of everything we stand for and believe in as a people.”

“The police seem to know nothing of the attacks which have been going on in other villages in Benue State since the Anti-Open Grazing Law came into effect last year.

“Many people are asking why the international community has remained silent over the massacre of Benue citizens.

“The answer is simple: It has been the goal of the Jihadists to conquer Benue and Tiv people who resisted their advance into the Middle Belt and the Eastern part of Nigeria since 1804; they are people who rejected Islam and fought for the unification of Nigeria in the civil war of 1967 – 1970.”

According to the Catholic spokesman, the people of  Eastern Nigeria have little sympathy for Benue people who fought on the side of Nigeria, adding that the Muslim North is enjoying a sweet revenge overshadowed by an insensitive regime.

He noted there were over 170,000 internally displaced persons before the Naka invasion, adding that with the situation on the ground in Mbalom, Benue would be flooded with thousands more.

“What cannot be said at this point is the consequences of the death of missionaries in the killings that have been ignored  by the government for over a year.

“The Catholic Diocese of Makurdi, which is one of the largest dioceses in Nigeria, has been active in providing relief materials, including education and skills acquisition lessons, to victims of the attacks,” he added.

It was learnt that when youths in Makurdi, the state capital, saw the body of one of the slain priests being brought to St Theresa’s Hospital Mortuary without its head, they got angry and took to the streets in protest.

The protest forced traders to shut down the popular Wurukum market. Banks and other business premises were hurriedly shut. Parents withdrew their children from schools.

The popular Katsina Ala Street, Igyor Chia Ayu Road and Makurdi – Gboko was deserted as residents trekked many kilometres to their destinations.
