Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold Praises Manager Jurgen Klopp For His Exploits

Featured Image

Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold has described manager Jurgen Klopp as a ‘father-like figure’ who is perfect at getting everything out of his players.

After shining down the flank in Liverpool’s attacking system, Alexander-Arnold has reserved praise for Klopp and thanked his boss for showing a little patience in younger players.

“He’s a massive influence. You hear a lot of players saying a manager is like a father figure, and I think that’s definitely the case with the manager here,” he told Sky Sports News. “He’s really encouraging for young players…

“He understands the game unbelievably well; knows that mistakes will happen. But he knows it’s how you react to them, and how you keep on going, how to play with the team’s identity, no matter what the scoreline is, that we have to believe in our ability.

“The way we want to play is high-pressing, win the ball back as high as possible and play football, and that’s obviously what we try to do, and he instils that no matter what the score is.”

Andres Iniesta Deserved To win Ballon d’Or – Zinedine Zidane

Featured Image

Zinedine Zidane has hailed Andres Iniesta following the midfielder’s announcement that he is to leave Barcelona next month.

Andres Iniesta will bring down the curtain on a career at Camp Nou that spans 22 years to join an unnamed team in the Chinese Super League.

Zidane has admitted to being a fan of Iniesta’s both on and off the field, and is adamant that the 33-year-old was deserving of at least one Ballon d’Or award during his hugely successful stint in Catalonia.

“It is difficult because if you like football, seeing a player like him leave is tough,” he told reporters. “I don’t think of him as a Barcelona player – I see him simply as a football player.

“I’ve come across him two or three times and he is a charming, very reserved man and I like players who can do everything on the field but are that calm off it.

“I only have good words for him, admiration for his football and I wish him the best as a player for the future but above all, as a person.

“We’re talking about someone who made everyone dream and he deserved to win the Ballon d’Or, especially in the year he won the World Cup. It was clear then that he deserved it.”

FIFA Bans Brazil Confederation President Marco Polo Del Nero For Life Over Bribes

Featured Image

Fifa has banned Brazilian confederation president Marco Polo Del Nero from all football-related activity for life after he was found guilty of receiving bribes.

Marco Polo del Nero was suspended in December 2017 over allegations that he took inducements in exchange for awarding media and marketing rights.

The 76-year-old was charged by American authorities in 2015 over money-laundering allegations.

The one-time FIFA executive committee member, was also fined 1 million Swiss francs ($1 million).

A statement from Fifa read: “The investigation against Mr Del Nero was opened on November 23 2015 and referred…. to schemes in which he received bribes in exchange for his role in awarding contracts to companies for the media and marketing rights to various football tournaments, including the Copa America, the Copa Libertadores and the Copa do Brasil.

“The adjudicatory chamber agreed with the recommendations of the investigatory chamber and found Mr Del Nero guilty of having violated art. 21 (Bribery and corruption), art. 20 (Offering and accepting gifts and other benefits), art. 19 (Conflicts of interest), art. 15 (Loyalty), and art. 13 (General rules of conduct) of the FIFA Code of Ethics. As a consequence, Mr Del Nero is banned for life from all football-related activities (administrative, sports or any other) at both national and international level.”

awyers for Del Nero said there was no evidence against him. He can challenge the sanctions at FIFA’s appeal committee, then the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

“Mr. Del Nero will appeal the decision and has the conviction that the punishment in a first instance will be reformed after the analysis of a court that is independent and not a subject of external interferences,” legal firm Bichara and Motta said in a statement.

Del Nero was indicted by the U.S. Department of Justice in 2015 in its sprawling investigation of international football corruption, and accused of taking millions of dollars in bribes linked to broadcasting contracts of competitions.

Newcastle Manager Rafael Benitez Confirms He’s In Talks With The Club Over Future

Featured Image

Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez has announced talks over his future at the club are under way.

Rafa Benitez has a year left on his current deal but gave away little detail about the progress of the discussions at his prematch news conference on Friday.

“We have had conversations and we will have conversations next week,” he said. “My representatives are talking with [managing director] Lee Charnley and that’s it.”

Benitez joined Newcastle in March 2016 and after a season in the Championship has guided the Magpies to their current standing of 10th in the Premier League this term.

Benitez also joked that there could be a place on Tyneside for departing Barcelona playmaker Andres Iniesta.

He said with a smile: “Has he said to which team he will go or not? Maybe we can prepare something for him right now.”

Atletico Madrid Manager Diego Simeone Could Get Two-game Ban From UEFA

Featured Image

Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone faces a touchline ban if his club reach the Europa League final because of his conduct at Arsenal, UEFA said on Friday while charging both clubs.

UEFA said Diego Simeone faces separate charges of insulting a match official and “improper conduct” that could carry a two-match ban, but UEFA’s disciplinary panel will not judge the case until next Friday — after the semifinal second leg in Madrid.

Simeone was sent from the dugout in the first half of Atletico’s 1-1 draw in London on Thursday and watched the rest of the first leg from the stands.

Thursday’s game ended 1-1 as 10-man Atletico battled back to earn a draw courtesy of Antoine Griezmann’s late strike, despite Sime Vrsaljko being sent off inside 10 minutes.

Atleti themselves will answer charges for improper conduct of the coach and throwing of objects.

Arsenal were charged for the setting off of fireworks, with the case also to be dealt with by the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body on May 4.

FIFA Warn US President Donald Trump After His Veiled World Cup Bid Threat

Featured Image

USA president Donald Trump tweeted support for an American bid to co-host the 2026 soccer World Cup with a veiled threat against nations that might oppose it, prompting FIFA to refer to guidelines that warn against political influence over bids.

USA President Donald Trump Tweets Threat To Opponents Of North America 2026 World Cup Bid

Morocco is the only rival to a joint bid to stage the event from the United States, Canada and Mexico, with the FIFA Congress due to choose the hosts in Moscow on June 13.

“The US has put together a STRONG bid w/ Canada & Mexico for the 2026 World Cup,” Trump tweeted.

“It would be a shame if countries that we always support were to lobby against the U.S. bid. Why should we be supporting these countries when they dont support us (including at the United Nations)?”

Soccer’s governing body FIFA has faced repeated ethics questions over past bids to host the tournament.

In a statement to Reuters, FIFA said: “As a general rule, we cannot comment on specific statements in connection with the bidding process. We can only refer to the FIFA Regulations for the selection of the venue for the final competition of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and in particular to the Bid Rules of Conduct incorporated therein.”

The bid rules contain an explicit warning against activities by bidding country governments which “may adversely affect the integrity of the Bidding Process and create an undue influence on the Bidding Process.”

The Moroccan bid team declined to comment on Trump’s tweet.

Mohamed Salah Unlikely To Leave Liverpool Cesc Fabregas

Featured Image

Cesc Fabregas has predicted that Mohamed Salah will remain a Liverpool player next season

Mohamed Salah has been in inspired form since joining Liverpool from Roma last summer, netting 43 goals in 47 matches and being crowned PFA Player of the Year.

Fabregas, who briefly played alongside the 25-year-old at Stamford Bridge, does not expect his ex-teammate to leave Anfield for at least another year, despite suggestions that Real Madrid have showed an interest.

“I coincided with Salah in my first season at Chelsea before he left for Fiorentina,” he told Cadena Cope. “He was young, he hardly played, but you could already see that he had talent. He always worked very hard and he gave his all.

“Football is a lot about confidence. The confidence that a coach can give you nowadays to achieve your best form is key. It is for a coach to play you in the right position, to help you, to make you improve – this is crucial. That’s happened to Salah.

“Liverpool exploit his qualities to the maximum. Salah is talented, he is fast, he scores. Liverpool have players that open the doors to find Salah the space he needs. He has found the right place, the ideal time to shine, and he is doing a great job.

“Right now if you are Liverpool and considering the season he has had, I don’t know how much you can ask for a player like him. I doubt that there is a club that can pay what Liverpool would ask for Salah. I’m sure Liverpool will not let him go easily. It’s hard to see Salah leaving Liverpool, at least this year.”

Jamie Vardy Prepared For Another Riyad Mahrez Transfer Saga

Featured Image

Jamie Vardy would not be surprised if Riyad Mahrez was involved in potential Leicester exit talks this summer.

Riyad Mahrez came close to joining Premier League champions Manchester City on January transfer deadline day.

But City failed to reach Leicester’s asking price and the Algeria international remained at the King Power Stadium.

It followed a summer where the winger went AWOL on deadline day in a failed effort to force through a move away from the Foxes.

“I think it’s happened in the last four transfer windows, so we just get on with it,” Vardy exclusively told Sky Sports News, when asked if he suspects another club will attempt to sign the winger.

“What happens will happen, we’ll have to wait and see, obviously, until the transfer window.”

Unai Emery Confirms He’s Leaving Paris Saint-Germain At End Of Season

Featured Image

Unai Emery has announced he will leave French champions Paris Saint-Germain at the end of the season.

Despite leading the club to its fifth league title in six years, Unai Emery will step down from his role as head coach after the decision was made not to renew the two-year deal he signed when he arrived from Sevilla in 2016.

A statement from Emery read: “I have communicated to the players that I am leaving.

“I thank president Nasser Al Khelaifi, the director of sport Antero Henrique, the supporters and all the players for these two seasons.”

PSG disappointed in Europe once more this term, failing to progress beyond the last 16 of the Champions League after losing to holders Real Madrid, despite a summer of huge transfer spending.

Unai Emery, 46, had been at PSG since June 2016 and, although he has won most of the national titles – all except the 2017 Ligue 1 -, he failed in the Champions League, after being humiliated by Barcelona (2017) and then by Real Madrid (2018).

“Qualifying [against Real] was difficult,” he continued.

“After our great game in the first leg, we lost because of the referee.”

Asked what it was like to manage Neymar, PSG’s 222m euro headline signing last summer, Emery had a simple answer.

“I told Neymar to continue with the natural way he lives,” he added.

No Chance Of David De Gea Leaving Manchester United – Jose Mourinho

Featured Image

Jose Mourinho has said there is “no chance” David De Gea will leave Manchester United this summer

The 27-year-old Spain international, who is approaching the last year of his contract, has regularly been linked to Real Madrid.

When asked about a potential summer departure for David De Gea, Mourinho responded: “No chance.”

Jose Mourinho went on to discuss how United have improved this season, in his opinion.

“Last year we won the Europa League, if we played Europa League this year we’d win it too but we played in the Champions League,” he told reporters. “We weren’t good enough to win it.

“Domestically last season we won the League Cup, now we are in the FA Cup final. This season we will finish top four I believe and I hope in second.

“More points, victories, goals, less goals conceded, not consistently but many times better football, there has been a clear evolution in the team.”

Antonio Conte Defends Chelsea’s Decision To Sell Mohamed Salah In 2014

Featured Image

Antonio Conte has endorsed Chelsea’s decision to sell forward Mohamed Salah in January 2014.

Limited opportunities saw the Egypt forward join Fiorentina on loan 12 months later, and then Roma on a temporary deal which became permanent.

“It’s not so simple,” Chelsea head coach Conte said. “We have to compare Mohamed Salah of four, five years ago, and not with this Salah now.

“Salah in the present has improved a lot, he has developed his football a lot. I think the Italy experience was very important for him and now I’m sure that he’s a different player, compared to the past.

“For this reason I think it’s very difficult to have this comparison.”

While Salah was sold to Roma after a temporary stint at Fiorentina, Tammy Abraham is set to return to Stamford Bridge after his season on loan with Swansea City.

Conte believes the 20-year-old, who is not able to face his parent club on Saturday, will have benefited from his time at the Liberty Stadium – and believes he has a long-term future at Chelsea.

“This is an important experience for Tammy,” Conte said ahead of the Premier League fixture at the Liberty Stadium.

“I think for him this season is very important for his development. He’s playing, not with regularity but he’s playing.

“I think this is right for his experience, to improve his experience and confidence. Then we’ll see for the future, what will happen.

“For sure, Tammy is a Chelsea player and will be an important player for the future.”

Iniesta In Tears As He Confirms Barcelona Exit At End Of Season

Andres Iniesta has announced he will be leaving Barcelona this summer after 22 years at the club.

The 33-year-old’s announcement came during a press conference at Barcelona’s training ground on Friday, bringing an end to a glittering career at the Nou Camp.

The midfielder was in tears during the announcement, which was attended by his Barcelona team-mates.

”I have spent all my life here at this club and it is not easy to leave,” Iniesta said after fighting back tears and regaining his composure. ”My time here ends this season. I understand that the club that took me in at 12 deserves the best of me in return, and I have given it that until now, but in the near future I won’t be able to both physically and mentally.

”The club has placed its confidence,” he said. ”And I have always said that if I am not able to give my all to my club that has given me everything then I wouldn’t be happy.”

Iniesta, who turns 34 on May 11, said that he intends to continue playing but did not reveal what his next club will be.

”I have always said that I would never compete against my club, so all the options outside Europe are open,” Iniesta said. ”When the season is over we will know my choice.”

Iniesta has been linked with a move to the Chinese Super League when his time at Barcelona ends, although he refused to confirm he will be joining Chongqing Dangdai Lifan as has been reported.

He has won eight La Liga titles with the club and four Champions Leagues, and scored the only goal as Spain beat Holland to win the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Iniesta is expected to get one more trophy for the club with Barcelona on the cusp of clinching the league title. The club leads Atletico Madrid by 11 points with four games left.

A female Corps member at the National Youth Service Corps camp at Yikpata in Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State has been reported dead.

The deceased, Miss Hilda Eva Amadi, was said to have died following a severe injury she sustained during a “Man o War” drilling exercise in the ongoing orientation camp.

NYSC DG Issues Condition For Corps Members’ Relocation

Specifically, Amadi, who was said to have studied Oil and Gas at University of Port Harcourt, was said to have suffered a bone fracture during the morning drill on April 23 and was rushed to the camp’s clinic.

Sources told The Punch that she was later taken to a government hospital in Ilorin when her condition degenerated. She reportedly died in the hospital.

The Kwara State Public Relations Officer, NYSC, Mr. Oladipo Morakinyo confirmed the demise of the corps member.

He stated that the circumstances of Amadi’s death and its cause will soon be made public. He added that autopsy and coronary reports were being awaited.

Meanwhile, the scheme has denied media report that it introduced Sharia practices in the administration of the FCT orientation camp.

A national daily had reported that the newly-appointed FCT Coordinator, Mallam Bello Balama, introduced Sharia practice in the camp because he said that “it is sinful for him as Muslim to head a camp where alcohol is sold.”

“The NYSC Management views this allegation very seriously and wishes to state that there is nothing like Introduction of Sharia Practice in any NYSC Orientation Camp including the FCT Camp.

“However, Management wishes to state that the scheme runs a prototype policy in all NYSC Orientation Camps Nationwide. The camps are coordinated with a uniform timetable. There is also freedom of worship for both Muslim and Christian corps members,” the NYSC had said.

It’s Official! CBN Pegs Transaction Via Mobile Phone At N100,000 Per Day (See Circular)

As from June this year, bank customers will not be able to use Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) channel to conduct transactions more than N100, 000 per day, said a statement issued by Nigeria’s apex bank.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on Thursday pegged maximum daily transactions through mobile phone- USSD — at N100,000, stating that the implementation of the policy starts June 1.

It also said bank customers will have to use both their PIN and a soft token to authenticate transactions above N20, 000.

In addition, banks must allow their customers the option to opt out of USSD channel for financial transactions.

CBN Places Restrictions On USSD Transactions

The USSD is a technology platform for online payments.

“Due to absence of set rules on USSD transactions, many commercial banks allow various limits, ranging from N100,000 to N500,000 and above in some cases, depending on customers’ risk absorption levels. This has exposed many customers’ transactions to high risk, with billions of naira lost to fraudsters,” the apex bank said in the statement.

The new framework signed by CBN Director, Banking & Payments System Department, ‘Dipo Fatokun said vast applications of the USSD technology, in terms of available services have raised the issue of the risks inherent in the channel.

“The vast applications of the USSD technology, in terms of available services have raised the issue of the risks inherent in the channel. In this regard, concerns have been expressed on the likely exposure of CBN approved entities to the possible breaching of the USSD accessed financial services in view of likely vulnerabilities in the technology and the ever-growing threats.

‘‘Furthermore, the implementation in Nigeria has created multiple USSD channels to customers, thereby increasing their exposure to risk, without a common standard for all.

‘‘This framework, therefore, seeks to establish the rules and risk mitigation considerations when implementing USSD for financial services offering in Nigeria.”

The CBN also orders banks to allow customers opt out of USSD supported financial services at their discretion.

In Bauchi: Buhari Boasts Of Victory Ahead Of 2019 Presidential Election

Featured Image

President Muhammadu Buhari has again re-iterated his decision to seek re-election in 2019, assuring his supporters when he arrived Bauchi state for a two-day working visit, that he is confident of winning.

Speaking yesterday while inaugurating 500 tractors and other farm implements procured by the Bauchi State government at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Stadium (ATBS), Buhari said he would seek re-election for a second term and win again because he “is a clean man and not corrupt like other past Nigerian leaders.”

ThisDay quoted the president as saying that: “Most Nigerian treasury looters have more than 20 to 30 houses yet some people in the country cannot afford even a single room to sleep in because poverty has eaten them up.”

According to him, “I don’t have this type of mind to loot the treasury of Nigeria while people are suffering.”

Buhari also vowed that he “will fish out looters and cheaters of the country, while all the funds recovered from them will be remitted into the national coffers.”

President Buhari further encouraged parents to send their children to school to acquire western education, saying life would not be good without education.

He said: “Assuming I did not go to school, I will not be the President of Nigeria today. You should go to school, not because you want to work but to acquire knowledge for the future.”

“Youths should not wait for government work because the government cannot do it alone; they should embrace farming. Farmers are the richest people in the country now and farming is the main focus of our government.”

He commended Bauchi State Governor, Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar, for using his bailout funds to clear salary arrears and ensure regular payment of salaries in the state.

Antoine Griezmann Confirms He’s In Talks With Atletico Madrid About His Future

Featured Image

Antoine Griezmann says he is in talks with Atletico Madrid about his future at the club.

Antoine Griezmann, 27, is under contract until 2022, but has been strongly linked with a move to Barcelona in the summer.

The Frenchman scored a vital equaliser for Atletico in the 1-1 draw at Arsenal in last night’s Europa League semi-final second leg.

“If I’m going to continue at Atletico, I don’t know, we’ll see,” Griezmann told COPE. “We’re talking to the club to see what can be done.”

Antoine Griezmann’s goal, however, means that the Colchoneros will take on Arsenal back in Madrid as favourites to advance to the final – and the forward recognised that his strike was vital.

“In the goal I arrived in the area tired after the run I had made, but I was able to score. We needed that goal.

“Am I important? [Jan] Oblak is important, [Diego] Godin is important, Gabi when he entered the pitch was important… all the players are important.”

Leicester City mangaer Claude Puel has stressed that his players are still focused on their remaining Premier League games despite being safe from relegation.

Leicester City are 15 points clear of the drop zone with just four games left of the season and have little left to play for, with European qualification beyond their reach.

However, Puel insists that his charges have not taken their foot off the gas as they prepare to travel to Crystal Palace on Saturday.

“We have players with quality and they are not on holiday,” the Frenchman told Sky Sports News.

“I think it is important to see our journey. When I got here in October I had to save the club. The most important thing is to think about our play and to improve.”

Wilfried Zaha Admits Manchester United Move Came Too Early In His Career

Wilifried Zaha admits he has no-one to blame but himself after failing to make the grade at Manchester United.

Wilifried Zaha was left frustrated during his short stint at Old Trafford after famously becoming Sir Alex Ferguson‘s final signing as Red Devils boss.

Zaha returned to Crystal Palace a year later and is now seen as one of the top wide players in the Premier League, earning links to more big-name clubs such as Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City ahead of the summer window.

Speaking to Sky Sports News, the 25-year-old confessed that his switch to United came too soon in his playing career.

“Me going to a big club when I was like 19 or 20, I didn’t know what to expect, how to behave, whatever,” he said. “I was just a youngster who wanted to do tricks, I didn’t even care about end product really.

“Now I take things a lot more seriously – the gym aspect, recovery after games, my decision-making. I’ve learnt a lot in terms of my all-round game. I’m totally different now. I’m definitely more mature and more strong-minded.

“I had to be mentally strong after what I went through at United. I think in football, most of it is just mental. Once you’ve got that sorted, then you’re good.”

Zaha also reckons there’s an “agenda” against him in football, adding: “I’ve seen so many others dive but nobody makes a commotion the same way they do with me, trying to get me banned.

“I don’t get banned because I don’t dive, but why does everyone want me to get banned so much? I feel like, going into games, referees literally just jump on the bandwagon.”
