‘Avengers: Infinity War’ Rakes $250 million, Breaks All-Time Opening Weekend Record

Featured Image

“Avengers: Infinity War” took in $250 million in its opening weekend, the highest North America opening of all time, industry estimates showed on Sunday, April 29, 2018.

The film, which features more than two dozen superheroes fighting to save the universe, displaced “The Force Awakens,” the seventh instalment in the long-running “Star Wars” space saga that made $248 million in its opening weekend in 2015.

Worldwide, the Marvel movie 10 years in the making brought in $630 million in box-office returns in its debut weekend, ComScore estimated—more than any movie ever released.

The biggest box-office debuts of all time, worldwide

The biggest box-office debuts of all time, worldwide

“Infinity War” is the 19th film in the so-called Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), combining a whopping nine franchises and a cast list that reads like a who’s who of Hollywood’s A-list.

Robert Downey Jr dons the red and gold metal suit once again as Iron Man; Benedict Cumberbatch is Doctor Strange; Scarlett Johansson is back as Black Widow; and Australia’s Chris Hemsworth is Thor.

Also back for more? Black Panther — the Marvel breakout of the year after the massive opening of the standalone pic in February, Captain America, the Hulk, Spider-Man, Hawkeye, the Guardians of the Galaxy and their assorted allies.

Their mission? To prevent the powerful purple alien Thanos (Josh Brolin) from destroying the universe.

Movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe have been known to top charts. The studio’s last movie, Black Panther, grossed a milestone $1 billion in just 26 days. So it’s no surprise that a movie featuring nearly all Marvel’s heroes—and the culmination of 18 earlier movies with interwoven plot lines—would take off as it has.

#Headies2018: Who should/will win? Our picks for the top voting categories (Part 1)

Featured Image

We present our picks for the top categories at the Headies. Who deserves to win and who will be robbed? The extended review bracket period makes this year’s nominations quite exhausting but here’s to hoping that this year, justice delayed wouldn’t be justice denied.

The voting categories are essentially a popularity contest and anyone can win at any given time. It is the reason why these awards are problematic.

Period under review is July 2016 to December 2017.

The 12th edition of The Headies will hold on May 5, 2018 at Eko Hotel & Suites.

Best music video

A voting category for the best conceptualist, best directed and most exciting video in the year under review. This award goes to the video director.

  1. Ma lo – Tiwa Savage ft Wizkid (Meji Alabi)
  2. Focus- Humble Smith (Clarence Peters)
  3. Come closer – Wizkid (Daps)
  4. Been calling – Maleek Berry (Meji Alabi)
  5. Yolo – Seyi Shay (Meji Alabi)
  6. Like Dat – Davido (Daps)

Who Should Win: Davido’s Like Dat has some retro quality to it that makes it feel like something made in the early oughties and the Humble Smith and Wizkid videos make creative use of colors.

Who will win: Ma Lo– Tiwa Savage ft Wizkid (Meji Alabi). For bringing sexy back to The Shrine, thanks to Alabi’s creative use of space and style. A potential spoiler could be Seyi Shay’s vibrant Yolo video. Whichever case, Meji Alabi deserves all the accolades.

Best Collabo

A voting category for the best R&B, pop or hip-hop collaborative track (including cameos).

  1. Ma lo – Tiwa Savage ft Wizkid
  2. Temper remix – Skales ft Burna Boy
  3. Juice – Ycee ft Maleek Berry
  4. No forget – Adekunle Gold ft. Simi
  5. Come closer – Wizkid ft. Drake

Who should win: Ycee and Maleek Berry had one of the biggest- and best collaborations for the period under review. Would be nice to see them rewarded.

Who will win: We all love us some Wizkid and should his fans choose to come out in full force, no one else stands a chance.

Best Rap Single

A voting category for a single (released on-air) recording of a rap song.

  1. You Rappers Should Fix Up Your Lives – MI
  2. Something Lite – Falz ft Ycee
  3. Link Up – Phyno ft. Burna boy, MI.
  4. Up to You – SDC ft Funbi
  5. Me Versus Me – Ice Prince

Who should win: Link Up had brilliant performances from all three players, especially Burna Boy’s torrid home run. If there’s any justice in Headies land, Link Up is the winner.

Who will win: MI is the marquee name but Falz and Ycee could have the most interested fans.

Next Rated

This category is a voting category for the most promising act in the year under review.

  1. Maleek Berry
  2. Mayorkun
  3. Dice Ailes
  4. Johnny Drille
  5. Zoro

Who should win: For the most anticipated category- it comes with a car- we would like to see it go to Maleek Berry, the most rounded of all the nominees.

Who will win: From where we stand, it is looking like a Mayorkun victory. We are open to surprises though.

Best Pop Single

A category for the best pop single in year under review (by single individual or group).

  1. Mad Over You – Runtown
  2. All Over – Tiwa Savage
  3. Yeba – Kiss Daniel
  4. Iskaba – Wande Coal and Dj Tunez
  5. If– Davido
  6. Fia – Davido

Who should win: Interesting and crowded category that represents some of the biggest hits of the period under review. 2017 was Davido’s year in terms of the prolificity of hit singles and either of If and Fia are credible winners, with If having a slight advantage.

Who will win: Should Davido succeed in splitting the votes of the fans, expect the prize to go to Runtown for his sub-genre spawning Mad Over You which melded both Ghanaian and Nigerian melodies. Yeba, All Over and Iskaba all suffer from the inadequacy of being huge but not nearly huge enough.

#Headies2018: Who should/will win? Our picks for the non-voting categories

Featured Image

We present our picks for the top categories at the Headies. Who deserves to win and who will be robbed? The extended review bracket period makes this year’s nominations quite exhausting but here’s to hoping that this year, justice delayed wouldn’t be justice denied.

We start with the non-voting categories.

Period under review is July 2016 to December 2017.

The 12th edition of The Headies will hold on May 5, 2018 at Eko Hotel & Suites.

Best Recording of the Year

A non-voting category for the best recording (that meets the judges requirements of excellence; songwriting, production, rendition) by an artiste or group in the year under review.

  1. Butterflies – Omawumi
  2. Halleluyah – Funbi
  3. Ponmile – Reminisce
  4. Heaven – Banky W
  5. Joromi – Simi

Who should win: The sole qualification for Banky W’s love letter to his newly wedded wife would be its sentimental value. Plus any chance for the Headies team to get the superstars into the building would be exploited. Omawumi’s Butterflies is a stately entry but if we are being honest, is far from the best recording on her Timeless album. Funbi made a big splash with the strategic familiarity of Halleluyah. But if there is any song most deserving in this category, it would be Simi’s utterly sweet and wholesome, Joromi.

Who will win: The Headies loves to reward superstars and Reminisce had one of the year’s best songs with Ponmile. Yes, he is singing but has any singing rapper ever sounded better in a long time?

Best Vocal Performance (Female)

A non-voting category for the single female artiste with the most outstanding vocal performances on a single song or album.

  1. In the Air – Waje
  2. Gone for Good – Simi
  3. Jowo – Aramide
  4. Saro – Niniola
  5. Where’s the Love – Niyola ft. Adekunle Gold
  6. Butterflies – Omawumi

Who should win: This one is quite competitive as all the nominees are credible winners. Waje was dependably brilliant in the feel good In the Air, so was Aramide in Jowo. Both are former winners and could easily take this one. Niyola has also hit the podium in the past to accept a Headies trophy but Where’s the Love did not quite get enough traction. Niniola did brilliant work on her debut album, This is Me and Saro is a career highlight. In a just world, she would emerge champion.

Who will win: Simi had the year’s biggest album with Simisola. Here would be as good a place as any to reward her. If anyone could stop her, it will be Omawumi riding a less commercial wave with the quiet storm, Butterflies.

Best vocal performance(male)

A non-voting category for the single male artiste with the most outstanding vocal performance on a single song or album.

  1. Perfect Woman – faze
  2. Folashade – Praiz
  3. Romeo & Juliet – Johnny Drille
  4. Tonight – Nonso Amadi
  5. Love you Baby – Banky W

Who should win: Much respect to elders Faze, Praiz and Banky W, but this one belongs to the new generation. Nonso Amadi’s Tonight is more technically accomplished and would be a shoo in.

Who will win: If anyone has the potential to halt Amadi’s rise to the podium, it would be Mavin 3.0 singer, Johnny Drille’s sickly sweet Romeo & Juliet. Drille would be banking on some good fortune, his rising profile and the Mavin machine’s ability to score at times like this.

Best Pop Single

A category for the best pop single in year under review (by single individual or group).

  1. Mad Over You – Runtown
  2. All Over – Tiwa Savage
  3. Yeba – Kiss Daniel
  4. Iskaba – Wande Coal and Dj Tunez
  5. If– Davido
  6. Fia – Davido

Who should win: Interesting and crowded category that represents some of the biggest hits of the period under review. 2017 was Davido’s year in terms of the prolificity of hit singles and either of If and Fia are credible winners, with If having a slight advantage.

Who will win: Should Davido succeed in splitting the votes of the judges, expect the prize to go to Runtown for his sub-genre spawning Mad Over You which melded both Ghanaian and Nigerian melodies. Yeba, All Over and Iskaba all suffer from the inadequacy of being huge but not nearly huge enough.

“I probably don’t even know the words yet. But can I just press play on one of the songs and see what happens?

Now That Big Brother Naija Is Over – Onoshe Nwabuikwu

CLICK here to read more opinion articles

The third edition of Big Brother Naija, the one with the slogan ‘Double Wahala’, ended last Sunday. The winner was Miracle, a pilot, otherwise known as Captain Miracle Igbokwe. His prize was N45m, consisting of N25m cash, an SUV worth N12m, a home entertainment system worth about N3.3m plus an all-expenses-paid trip for two to the value of N4.7m.

This article was written by Onoshe Nwabuikwu and was first published on The Punch. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

Since the show ended, people have been concerned about different things. Some have been consumed with calculating the cost of the 170 million votes that the show reportedly garnered and how much profit the organisers of BBN and their sponsors have ‘hammered’;  and of course, if only “lazy Nigerian youths” would get this involved in registering and collecting their PVCs, as if that’s all it would take. “A lot of” lazy Nigerian youths were also very involved, even more so, in the last elections with some of them now explaining the definition of ‘lazy’.

As for BBN, there are those who are very preoccupied with letting everyone knowing that they will never watch Big Brother. Not to mention those who would preface and qualify their answers to whether or not they watched BBN with, “I only follow the comments on social media. I really don’t have time for things like that.”

The bigger issue is that some people feel a need to shame others for programmes they watch coupled with the pressure that comes from religious affiliations, what you can’t let your pastor know about you, what you don’t want your colleagues to know you’re into, etc. All these and more influence why people are willing to deny even when caught red-handed. This is not to say that there aren’t those who genuinely don’t care…but these kinds of people would not generally be on the defensive, I think.

Fortunately, I don’t have to justify what I watch especially on TV.  The only justification I need is that I’m a TV critic. I do need material for this column, at the very least. I’ll have something to gripe about.

However, we must pay special attention to the real BBN fans, those mourning the end of the show and despairing about how they will keep themselves occupied. Before you feel superior to BBN fans, Nigeria is fast becoming a nation of vociferous and cantankerous fans of things like the English Premier League and Keeping Up with The Kardashians. In a few weeks, when the EPL ends, some people are going to have withdrawal symptoms. I used to be one of those that worried about what weekend would look like without football. Mercifully, this is a FIFA World Cup year. To top it up, our Super Eagles are going to Russia 2018!

Speaking of fans of the Kardashians, I recall mistaking Kim as being older than Kourtney in this column. You should have seen the responses, they were quick and furious: ‘How dare you say Kim is older than Kourtney? It shows you don’t know anything about the Kardashians’. Obviously, that error was serious enough to upset the balance of the world. If only I got such passion about the other things I write about!

But can we really blame anyone from living a life of escapism in these parts? Between following news about the almost daily killings in different parts of Nigeria and following the latest shenanigans on Big Brother Naija, or what the latest Kardashian/Jenner stunt is, what would you choose? Religion? Don’t forget also that there are people who use talks about eternity and the life hereafter to avoid focusing on the real events on this earth? As the joke goes, some people are so focused on heaven they are not bothered with trivialities like life on earth.

BBN, the class of 2018

As you already know, I wasn’t watching this year’s BBN and it had nothing to do with piety or self-righteousness. I tried to follow the show online but it proved strangely difficult. Suffice it to say I knew enough to want Miracle to win. During the opening show, he reminded me of Uti Nwachukwu’s first time at the Big Brother Africa in 2007.  He had the Nigerian confidence, that positive ‘can-do-ness’. By the time he announced himself with a statement that had ‘Winsh’, we were rooting for him.

I say ‘we’ because I watched that edition with one of my sisters-in-law, Steph, who doesn’t pay attention to such things. Before the end of her visit when the show was just a few days old, I had made a convert of her. Far more interesting than Dino jumping or not jumping off a police van, I tell you.

I also followed the Cee C/Tobi drama like millions of Nigeria. Cee C was allegedly heckled on arrival from South Africa; that’s not good. But she came second. So, who was voting? Speaking of which, my pet peeve still remains this Big Brother Naija made in SA.

Finally, I took note on that first day of BBN 2018 (January 28) how accomplished the housemates seemed. As far as I can recall, almost everyone off them was otherwise engaged with education or business or work; which is just to say that the BBN show itself is not a bad idea.

Atiku Vows To Probe Buhari’s Govt If Elected President In 2019

Featured Image

A former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, has stated that he will probe the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari over the war against Boko Haram, especially procurement of arms, if he is elected Nigeria’s president in the 2019 general elections.

The ex-VP made this known while speaking on BBC Hausa Good Morning Program on Saturday, April 28, 2018.

He said; “Eight years after, Nigerian government is still fighting Boko Haram that are not professionally trained. If elected Nigeria’s president, I will investigate how the government was unable to defeat Boko Haram for years, also I will investigate the procurement of arms bought by this administration.

“After 2015 general election, I met the president. I told him the activities of the party have been crippled and there is a need for restructure. Also I advised the president on issues concerning his administration. I said to him, if things continued like this, I will quit, but Mr Buhari turned deaf ears and remained mum.

“If Nigerians can recall, we initiated the Economic and Financial (Crimes) Commission (EFCC). I’m the person that sourced for the take off funds for the EFCC.

“In this administration (Buhari’s), there are people that are untouchable, they are doing things that are not in order but they are being shielded by the government. If elected Nigeria’s president, my administration will not spare any personality. When I was in (at) the helm (of affairs), none of my relatives or friends were found wanting.

He also said 40 percent of his cabinet will be youth if elected president.

On the allegation that he has been banned from entering the United States, he said:

“I requested for visa, they said it is under administrative process. I’m not desperate to travel to America, I don’t have any investment there. The house I bought for my wife years back, she sold the house, I don’t have anything to do in America. It’s my tradition, I buy houses for my wives, but for me, I don’t need a house.”

When asked whether the ‘ban’ will affect his chances of becoming Nigeria’s president, Mr Abubakar said:

“It’s not by going to America that qualifies one to be a president, it’s not in our Constitution.”

‘Hospitalised’ Dino Melaye Reacts To Failed Attempt To Recall Him

Featured Image

A hospitalised Dino Melaye on Sunday took to his social media account to thank his constituents for rejecting attempts to recall him from Senate, saying evil will never triumph.

Melaye, the Senator Representing Kogi West at the National Assembly, also disclosed that “every lie has an expiry date. Forces of evil will never triumph over forces of light. God is with us.”

Nigerians Aim Dig At Governor Yahaya Bello As Senator Melaye’s Recall Fails

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had declared the process failed after the verified signatories to the petition for Melaye’s recall fell short of requirements.

Melaye, who is currently in the Intensive Care Unit after a face-off with security agencies last week, thanked Nigerians, especially his constituents for standing by him.

Dino Melaye: How Arrested Senator Jumped Out Of Moving Police Vehicle, Landed In Hospital

Below is also a statement issued on his behalf by his media aide, Gideon Ayodele.

“The chain of events from last Monday to this day are enough for one to be grateful to God Almighty and all Kogi people both at home and in the Diaspora, including friends of Senator Dino Melaye outside the Confluence State and all over the world, for standing behind the Senator in this trying times.

“Needless to say that all allegations against him by the Police are politically-motivated and the timing of his maltreatment and harassment was carefully planned to prevent him from mobilising support against the purported recall of his representation of Kogi West from the Senate, GOD manifested Himself by using the good people of Kogi West senatorial zone to stem the tide against him by making the cup to pass over the Senator even in his absence.

“Despite his current travails, his inability to mobilise his constituents and also deploy agents to monitor the signature verification exercise, countless number of supporters volunteered to do it without minding the associated risks posed by the Kogi State Government. It is therefore important for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to act truly independent by announcing a result that truly reflects the wishes of the majority electorate of Kogi West as demonstrated today.

“No doubt, to recall a representative is guaranteed by the 1999 Constitution (as amended) as the right of the electorate, what the good people of Kogi West and other lovers of democracy outside the state, who are praying for Senator Dino Melaye, have done is to stop an instigated and purported recall against him because it is undemocratic, self serving and beneficial to only a few.

“It is pertinent to say here, that though the battle for the recall has been won and lost, the safety of Senator Dino Melaye in the hospital as heavily guarded by the Police since Tuesday is a cause for concern even as we decry the arrest, continued detention and trial of his brothers, aides, friends and lawyers on trumped-up charges by the police.

“We appeal to all Nigerians of good conscience to continue to help us pray for the safety and immediate freedom of Senator Dino Melaye so that he can return to his family and duty post – responsive representation of his people in the Senate – because his victory over the purported recall today will certainly spite his traducers and they may devise new ways of rubbishing him for no just cause.”

Nigerians Aim Dig At Governor Yahaya Bello As Senator Melaye’s Recall Fails

Featured Image

The recall election for the lawmaker representing Kogi West Senatorial District, Senator Dino Melaye, was on Saturday declared a ‘failure’.

According to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), only five per cent of the electorate turned out in an exercise that required 51 per cent majority to succeed. Of the 189,870 signatories, only 18,742 were verified after Saturday’s exercise.

Dino Melaye: How Arrested Senator Jumped Out Of Moving Police Vehicle, Landed In Hospital

The result showed that people of Kogi West Senatorial District have decided to keep Dino Melaye as their senator despite his controversial style and ongoing political ordeal which includes criminal investigation by the police.

“I, Professor Ukertor Gabriel Moti, affirm that the information on verification of signatures to the petition for the recall of Senator Dino David Melaye of Kogi West Senatorial District has taken place on this day, 28th day of April 2018, and that the verified signatures is 5.34% of the total number of registered voters in the constituency and has therefore not satisfied a requirement of the law for a referendum,” the INEC chief in charge of the election said while announcing the results midnight.

Following the outcome of the recall, some Nigerians have taken to Twitter to drag the Kogi Governor, Yahaya Bello – who many adjudged to be the architect of the senator’s recall – to the mud.

“I’m Single To Stupor” – Skales Speaks On Relationship And Career

Featured Image

Nigerian singer, Raoul John Njeng-Njeng popularly known as Skales has revealed in a recent interview with Showtime that he is currently focusing on his music and doesn’t have time for sex.

While speaking on intellectual theft experienced in the industry, Skales apologized for insulting an upcoming artiste identified as Dontuffyplugg.

He said:-

“I’m still single to stupor, just like Falz would say. Right now, no sex for me, I’m just focusing on my music. In fact, for now I’m working on my next album.

“The funny thing is that last year, I practiced celibacy for about three months. I won’t lie, I was proud of myself. I just decided I didn’t want to have sex with any woman but after three months I couldn’t hold it anymore. You know say body nor be firewood now.

Speaking on him being rude to an upcoming artiste, Skales said:-

“I wasn’t trying to be violent but yes, I overreacted, I admit. I’m a human being. I want to tell my fans that I’m sorry I over reacted, I’m human at times. I feel like I over reacted so it’s left to my team to deal with it because that’s a copyright infringement matter.

As an artiste, it hurts when you put in a lot of work and you just wake up one day to see somebody selling what you’ve worked hard for.

“There should be agencies and platforms that protect intellectual property and fight copyright infringement. I feel like they are really not taking it serious so they need to start taking it serious”.
