EFCC Nabs ‘Fake’ Magu In Abuja

Featured Image

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) said it has arrested one Felix Idowu for allegedly impersonating its Acting Chairman, Mr. Ibrahim Magu.

In a statement on Wednesday, Spokesman of the commission, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, said the suspect was a real estate agent and a graduate of Political Science.

Uwujaren said Idowu was found with documents which had the forged signature of the EFCC boss and would be charged to court as soon as the investigation was concluded.

“Prior to his arrest, the EFCC received intelligence report that the suspect, while posing as an operative of the EFCC, requested for money in order ‘to kill’ a petition purportedly written against the complainant.

“The EFCC swung into action by asking the complainant to play along. In the process, Idowu was asked to liaise with the complainant’s personal assistant, who was an EFCC undercover agent.

“While interacting with the undercover agent, the suspect was lured to a popular supermarket in Wuse 2, Abuja, where he was arrested on Monday, April 30.

“Upon search of his Lexus EX 350 car, a lot of documents were recovered including letter of investigation activities on a fake EFCC letter-head paper with ‘Ref No: CTGI/6/vol.1’.

“Also found was a letter of petition written to EFCC with ‘EFCC stamp received’ bearing Magu’s forged signature,’’ he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that impersonation of Magu and other officials of the EFCC by fraudsters has been a source of worry to the commission.

The commission has also issued several alerts in recent times to warn members of the public against fraudsters using Magu’s name for extortion.

NYSC DG Warns Taraba Corps Members, “You’re To Serve Not To Evangelise”

Featured Image

The Director-General of the National Youth Sevice Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Zakari Kazaure, has cautioned corps members posted to serve in Taraba State that “you are posted to go and serve and not to go and evangelise.”

The NYSC DG made this known on Wednesday in Jalingo when he visited Corps members currently undergoing orientation course at the NYSC camp, Sibre, near Jalingo.

Represented by the Director of administration and management, Alhaji Habibu  Kurawa, the DG said that the NYSC management was aware that elections were around the corner and had put in place measures to ensure the safety of each corps member posted to the state.

“I can assure you that we don’t wait till the election before working for the security of Corps members.

“We have put in place measures to ensure that your accommodations are well guarded and officials on the ground have instructions to collaborate with the relevant security agencies in your respective places of Primary Assignment to guarantee your safety.

“Let me, however, warn you that you are posted to go and serve and not to go and evangelise. Your concern should be to serve and not to go and indoctrinate your host communities. Conversion of souls is not your concern,” Kazaure said.

He urged the Corps members to conduct themselves well and be good ambassadors of their states, tribes, and schools.

The NYSC DG noted that the society expects a lot from the corps members and urged them to work hard to live up to the expectations.

Obasanjo Denies Online Report Claiming ‘He’s Supporting Buhari’

Featured Image

Former Nigerian President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, on Wednesday denied reports making the rounds on the internet that he had made a U-turn on his verdict of non-performance and had declared support for President Muhammadu Buhari.

Speaking in a statement made available to newsmen in Abeokuta and signed by his media aide, Kehinde Akinyemi, the former leader said that the news was unfounded.

Obasanjo also ascribed the social media report to some elements in Buhari’s camp or his support group that were desperate to secure a second term for their principal, through fair or foul means.

While he further described their action as libelous, Obasanjo lamented that instead of addressing the fundamental issues of statecraft and economy, they were engaging in spreading falsehoods.

Obasanjo also said he never met any labour leader in Abuja on Workers Day, as he described such insinuation as a fallacy.

The statement read in part “It has come to the attention of Chief Olusegun Obasanjo that some elements in the Muhammadu Buhari camp and or support group are desperate to secure a second term, fair or foul.

“In this desperation, everything is fair, including telling libelous lies against persons and institutions, instead of addressing the fundamental issues of statecraft and economic management.

“In the last 24 hours, the Internet has been bombarded with deliberate falsehoods aimed at hoodwinking the unsuspecting Nigerians to believe that Obasanjo has now supported Buhari for his second term,  because of some perceived Buhari’s ‘superlative’ performance in his encounter with Trump during his visit to the White House in Washington D. C.

“In another breath, these blackmailers insinuated that Chief Obasanjo met with some Nigeria Labour Congress leaders in his house in Abuja on Workers’ Day.

“What a pathetic fallacy! Chief Obasanjo never met any Labour man or woman on May 1, 2018, to make any supposed volte-face to support Buhari.”

“Furthermore, neither was Chief Obasanjo in Abuja on that date nor does he own a house in Abuja. Any time he visits Abuja, he usually stays in a Guest House or hotel.

“For the record, Obasanjo has not and cannot endorse failure.

“His position remains as stated in his January 23rd, 2018 statement on the state of the nation. Chief Obasanjo sympathises with the plight of those campaigners and supporters of Buhari. He doesn’t believe dishing out fake news that can only be believed by imbeciles will turn black into white.

“Nigerians know that Chief Obasanjo has only spoken the truth about widening poverty, alienation and social disunity and near disintegration of the country through Buhari’s incompetence.

“Obasanjo will continue to exercise his right to free speech and no amount of hate speech will assuage Nigerians who are in need of a brand new leadership.

“The mediocre performance of Buhari cannot be described by anybody as ‘superlative’ even by morons, not the least President Obasanjo.

“From the Buhari/Trump meeting, Chief Obasanjo only saw through three points: One, the US will continue to reduce purchase of crude oil from Nigeria and there is nothing Nigeria under Buhari can do about; two, the US will export agricultural products to Nigeria and Buhari’s government will encourage that; and three – all the killings taking place in Nigeria by herdsmen are being done by expatriates trained by Gadaffi and no Nigerian is to blame and Buhari cannot do anything to stop it.

“For whatever the meeting was worth, President Buhari again bungled another opportunity to self-redeem.

“No wonder President Trump ordered him in a rather condescending manner to go back home and stop the killings going on in Nigeria! We hope now Buhari will heed Trump’s advice which hopefully will be considered non-abusive.

“Therefore, Chief Obasanjo is more convinced in his statement of January 23rd and will not change his position. No lies, fake news dished out by these desperate and unintelligent supporters is worth believing and this misinformation cartel and social media dogs will do more damage to the flint reputation of their principal.

“Chief Obasanjo understands that the internet has good and bad uses. Those abusing the media should desist from this barbaric act as it will only expose them to greater ridicule at the end of the day.

“Obasanjo will continue to speak out. He will continue to issue patriotic statements under his signature or cause them to be issued on his behalf under the signature of his media aide, Mr Kehinde Akinyemi.”

Dino was said to have been brought to the court on a stretcher by the police.

‘Hospitalised’ Dino Melaye Reacts To Failed Attempt To Recall Him

He was arraigned on charges bordering on his alleged escape from a police vehicle in Abuja on April 24, 2018.

It is understood that the presiding magistrate, Mabel Segun-Bello, had granted him bail in the sum of N90 million before he was rearrested by the police.

Nigerians Aim Dig At Governor Yahaya Bello As Senator Melaye’s Recall Fails

Melaye’s lawyer, Mr. Nkem Okoro, told newsmen that his client met the bail conditions granted by the court but the senator was re-arrested by the police on the court premises.

“He met his bail conditions but the police decided to re-arrest him on the excuse that they were taking him to Lokoja tomorrow morning,” Okoro said.

Speaking in corroboration via his Twitter account the Senator representing Bayelsa East, Ben Murray Bruce, said:

“So was granted bail. However, while leaving the court, he was picked up again by police. They claimed they were taking him to hospital, rather, they took him to Force Headquarters. Their intention is to move him to Kogi State anytime from now. Is this a democracy?”

N1.8b Unpaid Tax: Osun Govt Shuts Down Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU)

Featured Image

The Osun State Internal Revenue Service (OIRS) has shut down the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, for its failure to remit over N1.844,770,939.45 to the agency.

It was gathered that the officials of the OIRS stormed the school premises at about 7:00 on Wednesday morning and sealed the main gate and the administrative block over the tax debt of N1.8 billion.

The team, led by one Mr Oladipo Babatunde, sealed the Senate Chamber and the administrative building before proceeding to seal the main gate, leaving the pedestrian gate unlocked.

The closure of OAU and other establishments in the state followed the expiration of the seven-day ultimatum issued to all affected establishments by the state government.

Speaking on the closure, Mr Babatunde disclosed that the institution owed the state government about N1.8 billion and they had no choice than to seal after the management of OAU refuses to meet up with the deadline issued to them.

According to him, the money owed by the Institution is outstanding unremitted PAYE withholding taxes and developments levy which had become due and payable since year 2015 and 2016.

Meanwhile, the school management has reacted to the development, saying it would soon resolve the issue with the state government.

Speaking with newsmen, the Public Relations Officer of the University, Mr Abiodun Olanrewaju, said that the debt was inherited from the past administration of the institution.

“I must add this that the present university administration since 2017 has been paying consistently but the backlog of debt inherited from the past administration is what is causing this little problem.

“Everything will be resolved by the grace of God. The school management is assuring the public that it will soon be resolved,” Olanrewaju said.

Nigeria Joins World Minifootball Federation

Featured Image

Nigeria has joined the World Minifootball Federation (WMF), responsible for organising six-aside football.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that the WMF has no link with the Federation of International Football Association (FIFA), which organises football, including five-aside.

Andy Elerewe, President, Minifootball Association of Nigeria (MAN), announced the membership on Tuesday in Abuja.

He spoke at a send-off dinner, organised for its football team The Jaguar.

Elerewe said that the country joined WMF to enable her participate in the African Minifootball Cup, scheduled to hold in Tripoli, Libya, between May 5 and May 12.

Elerewe said the association assembled its team to the African championship after four days of its affiliation to the world body.

“I can proudly tell you all, that we have successfully completed our registration with CAC, and just four days, Nigeria was officially accepted and affiliated by the World Minifootball Federation (WMF) at its Extraordinary General Assembly of April 27, 2018.

“So, I can authoritatively inform you that we are now one of the 144 countries that are duly accredited and affiliated to the WMF, whose membership cuts across the six continents of the world.

“The Africa Minifootball Cup tournament taking place in Tripoli, Libya, from May 5 to May 12, 2018 will have nine countries officially accredited for it and attending,” Elerewe said.

According to him, 11 players will represent the country at the tournament which is a six-aside football game.

“Ladies and gentlemen, Minifootball is the new craze in global sports. Though, it’s as old as the regular football, the sport became an officially organised international sporting game under the auspices of the WMF in 2013.

“Minifootball is a six-aside bears football game, played out-door on a natural or artificial grass, with only nine players (six in play), smaller goal post and a smaller field of about (46mx26m), and 30 minutes duration each half with a 10 minutes break.

“Already the sport which has continued to dominate the attention of the world, is officially recognised in over 140 countries; since it held its first Minifootball World Cup in nine cities in the United States of America in 2015, there has not been a going back.

“Tunisia hosted the 2017 world edition,” he added.

Justine Madugu, Head Coach of the minifootball team, “The Jaguar,” assured Nigerians that the team would do its best to win the tournament in spite being a participant for the the first time.

Madugu said plans were on to establish standard local leagues in the country as mandated by the world body.

He said that the local leagues were expected to translate into a continental championship with an opportunity for clubs to compete at the world stage.

“The Minifootball World Cup and the continental championships are organised bi-yearly,” Madugu said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that a cheque of N30million was issued to the association by AIBEN Investment and Property Limited for the sponsorship of the team to the tournament in Libya.

NAN also reports that the WMF has its headquarters in Czech Republic, while the African Minifootball Federation (AMF) has its head office in Tunisia.

How Codeine Is Creating A Generation Of Addicts In Nigeria

Featured Image

An underground investigation conducted by BBC Africa’s new investigations unit, Africa Eye, has revealed how leakages in the Nigerian pharmaceutical industry’s regulatory system is aiding the plague of addiction to cough syrup – codeine – across Nigeria.

The Federal Government may have seen the publication as it has directed the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to ban with immediate effect further issuance of permits for the importation of codeine as active pharmaceutical ingredient for cough preparations.

This is because the directive came less than 48 hours after the documentary titled, ‘Sweet, Sweet Codeine,’ was aired on BBC.

The exclusive undercover investigation, co-produced with BBC Pidgin, also reveals how highly placed officials of pharmaceutical companies illegally supply codeine syrup products from their factories to drug dealers who in turn sell the dangerously addictive, sweet-tasting mixtures to addicts.

With access to Nigeria’s crack anti-drug squads, BBC Pidgin journalist, Ruona Meyer, whose brother has struggled with cough syrup addiction, was part of the investigation to unravel the secrets of the syrup plague and to expose the criminals behind it.

Read details below as published by BBC:

When the younger brother of the BBC’s Ruona Meyer became addicted to cough syrup, she began to investigate the men who make and sell opioid-based medicine on the streets of Lagos.

Her investigation took her deep into Nigeria’s criminal underworld, uncovering an epidemic that is destroying young lives across West Africa.

“Where there are lots of school kids, as soon as they get a taste for it, they’ll keep pestering you for more,” says Junaid Hassan.

When I heard him say these words I felt sick to my stomach.

I had already witnessed what he described – young Nigerians hooked on cough syrup made with codeine, an opioid which can be addictive. A 14-year-old girl from my home city of Lagos, her parents distressed and unsure how to help her. A young man in Kano, chained to the floor of a rehab centre, swarming with flies, driven mad by months of drinking syrup with his friends.

My own brother has suffered from codeine cough syrup addiction. The strawberry tasting opioid hooked him after our father was killed.

Grief, depression, a desire to be cool are just some of the reasons Nigerians are falling for this drug. Musicians sing about the high it gives you. Dealers peddle it in nightclubs and on the streets. Teenagers mix it with soft drinks, or swig it straight from the bottle at “syrup parties”.

Mr Hussan, aka Baba Ibeji, works at Bioraj Pharmaceuticals, a licensed medical producer which manufactures a codeine cough syrup called Biolin. The company is a major supplier to northern Nigeria.

He is one of a number of pharmaceutical company employees who the BBC have secretly filmed doing illegal cough syrup deals over the past few months. It is not illegal to drink or manufacture the medicine – but it is against the law to sell it to people without a doctor’s prescription or those who don’t have a pharmaceutical licence.

“Even if someone wants to buy 1,000 cartons, we won’t give them a receipt,” Mr Hassan told us, explaining how he avoids detection from authorities. Corruption like this is against Bioraj company policy, but is helping to fuel the industrial quantities of syrup leaking on to the black market.

When we informed Bioraj that we had evidence Mr Hassan was engaging in this illicit activity, it responded with a statement saying the company only sells codeine cough syrup legitimately, that Mr Hassan denies wrongdoing, and that company chairman Bioku Rahamon personally guards Biolin sales.

Like all opioids, codeine is in the same chemical family as heroin. It’s an effective painkiller, but is also capable of giving you a euphoric high if consumed in large quantities. It is highly addictive and, taken in excess, can have a devastating impact on the mind and body.

In the Dorayi Rehabilitation Centre in Kano, I met a man said by staff to have been driven insane by the drug. He was shackled at the ankles and chained to the roots of a tree, screaming and thrashing his arms. Seventy-two hours earlier he had been out on the streets, breaking car windows in traffic.

“He’s still going through his withdrawal issues now,” said Sani Usaini, the officer in charge of the rehab centre.

Over 60 Worshippers Feared Dead In Twin Bomb Attacks In Mubi

Featured Image

The death toll for the bomb attacks that rocked a mosque in Mubi, Adamawa which bore the hallmark of the Boko Haram terror sect has climbed to more than 60.

The attacks occurred on Tuesday while the worshippers were holding the Zuhr (afternoon) prayer.

The blasts, said to have been carried out by young boys, happened shortly after 1:00 pm (1200 GMT) in Mubi, some 200 kilometres (125 miles) from the Adamawa state capital, Yola.

Imam Garki, from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), said a joint assessment with the police and Red Cross found that 26 people were killed and 56 were injured, 11 of them critically.

They were transferred to the Federal Medical Centre in Yola for treatment.

But a medical source at the Mubi General Hospital said they had received 37 bodies, while a rescue worker involved in the relief operation said he counted 42 dead and 68 injured.

“These I saw with my own eyes. We were counting as they were being taken,” said Sani Kakale.

Two local residents who attended funerals for the victims said the death toll was much higher — and could climb further.

“Before I left the cemetery I took part in the burial of 68 people. More bodies were being brought by families of the victims,” said Muhammad Hamidu.

“I think this is the worst attack Mubi has ever witnessed. The human loss is unimaginable.”

Abdullahi Labaran added: “We left 73 freshly dug graves where each victim was buried. There are still unclaimed bodies at the hospital.

FG Directs NAFDAC To Ban Production Of Codeine Containing Syrups In Nigeria

Featured Image

The Federal Government has directed the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to ban with immediate effect further issuance of permits for the importation of codeine as active pharmaceutical ingredient for cough preparations.

The directive was given by the Minister of Health, Professor Isaac Adewole, on Tuesday in Abuja.

According to him, the directive became necessary due to the gross abuse Codeine usage has been subjected to in the country.

Instead, the Minister said Codeine containing cough syrups should be replaced with dextromethorphan which is less addictive.

He also directed the Pharmaceutical Council of Nigeria, (PCN) and NAFDAC to supervise the recall for labelling and audit trailing of all codeine containing cough syrups in the country, while he has also banned sales of Codeine containing cough syrup without prescription across the country.

He said: “We had an emergency meeting with NAFDAC and the Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Group (PMGMAN) to inform them that there is an embargo on all new applications for registration of codeine-containing cough syrups as well as applications for renewal has been abolished.

“NAFDAC was directed to fully regulate and control the manufacturing, distribution and sale of drugs, including inspection at points of entry of drugs, drug products and food for compliance with the new directive.

“The Pharmacists Council of Nigeria (PCN) was also directed to continue enforcement activities on Pharmacies, Patent and Proprietary Medicine Vendor’s Shops and outlets throughout the country.

“The Federal Ministry of Health shall ensure collaboration among regulatory agencies namely, NAFDAC, PCN, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN), for effective implementation of extant Acts, regulations, policies and guidelines on codeine control and usage.

“Furthermore, these agencies shall work together to increase pharmacovigilance around codeine, tramadol and other related substances of abuse,’ Adewole stated.

“Already, NAFDAC has developed IEC materials that will be used in an already planned national campaign against drug abuse, an awareness programme that includes Young Pharmacists Group of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria. This will soon be flagged off in Kano and Lagos.”

Adewole added that as a way of discouraging youths to shun the drugs, the Federal Government through Federal Ministry of Health shall partner with National Orientation Agency (NOA), Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Football celebrities, members of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, Performing Musicians of Nigeria and other celebrities to drive national campaign against drug abuse.

“The FMOH shall ensure that Drug treatment intervention for victims of substances abuse shall be undertaken across the spectrum of health care delivery system in the country,” Adewole stated.

Newcastle Have To Back Rafa Benitez – Steve Harper

Featured Image

Former Newcastle ‘keeper Steve Harper has urged the club to back manager Rafael Benitez to keep him at St James’ Park.

Steve Harper is hoping whoever is in charge, Rafa Benitez will be handed the funds he will need to take Newcastle forward.

He said: “If they finish 10th, that’s an incredible achievement and he needs to be backed, because if he is backed, the players he has brought in – the likes of Kenedy, [Martin] Dubravka – they’ve shown the quality and level that he wants to work with.

“If he is backed, hopefully they can move up the table year on year. It’s a big ask – he’s not going to get the amount of money to break into the top six, that’s a big, big ask.

“But if he is backed to the tune of, I don’t know, £50m, £100m – I don’t know what players are now – then I certainly think they are capable of moving up a couple of places in the table.

“He gets it, he gets the club and he’s won the fans over. He has their respect and hopefully he’ll be backed.

“Having spent 20 years here, you know what can be around the corner, but God forbid that happens because it doesn’t bear thinking about if he was to leave the football club.

Stoke City Grant Jese Rodriguez Compassionate Leave As His Loan Ends

Featured Image

Stoke confirm they have given Jese Rodriguez permission to take compassionate leave until the end of the season and will not return to Stoke during his loan period.

Jese had been on a season-long loan from Paris Saint-Germain at an overall cost of £6.75million but Stoke have wiped off the price of nearly there months of wages by coming to an agreement with the player.

Jese Rodriguez is understood to have failed to report for training at the Premier League strugglers since his most recent spell of compassionate leave to visit his sick son in Spain

A club statement read: “In order to respond to recent press speculation surrounding Jesé Rodriguez, we would like to confirm that the Club has given Jesé permission to take unpaid compassionate leave until the end of the season for personal reasons and therefore he will not be returning to Stoke during his loan period.”

The former Real Madrid player has regularly been allowed back to Spain to tend for his poorly baby boy Nyan, who was born prematurely.

But last month Jese’s ex-girlfriend Aurah Ruiz went online to accuse the player of drinking and smoking in a Madrid nightclub instead of maintaining a hospital vigil for their sick infant.
