Dino Melaye, the Senator Representing Kogi West at the National Assembly, was on Thursday remanded in Police custody by a Lokoja Magistrate Court for the next 38 days pending the commencement of hearing in the suit brought by police against him and three others.

The charges the police brought against Senator Melaye bothered on criminal conspiracy and unlawful possession of prohibited firearms, amongst others.

Nigerians Aim Dig At Governor Yahaya Bello As Senator Melaye’s Recall Fails

He was before now arraigned on charges bordering on his alleged escape from a police vehicle in Abuja on April 24, 2018.

The Counsel to Senator Dino Melaye, Mike Ozekhome (SAN) argued for his bail which was opposed by the Police prosecuting Counsel, Alex Iziyon who insisted that that the offences preferred against the senator were ordinarily not bailable.

‘Hospitalised’ Dino Melaye Reacts To Failed Attempt To Recall Him

Ruling on the suit, Chief Magistrate Suleiman Abdulahi denied the bail application and asked him to be kept in prison custody till June 11, 2018.

Two suspects had earlier this year implicated the senator as their financier and suppliers of gun to kidnap, rob, and cause political mayhem in the state.

Bear in mind that the embattled senator was on Wednesday arraigned by the Nigerian Police before a magistrate court in wuse zone 2 Abuja.

Dino who was brought to the court on a stretcher by the police, was granted him bail in the sum of N90 million by the presiding magistrate, Mabel Segun-Bello, but was rearrested by the police.

13 Killed As Cattle Thieves, Civilian Militia Clash In Zamfara

Featured Image

Thirteen people were killed in prolonged clashes between cattle thieves and local civilian militia in northern Nigeria’s Zamfara state, police said on Thursday.

The militia and cattle thieves fought a gun battle Tuesday through Wednesday in the remote village of Fankashi in the Maru district of the state, police spokesman Mohammed Shehu told AFP.

“Our men recovered 13 dead bodies from the criminal gang and the vigilantes from the village after the fight,” he added.

The village was attacked by the bandits, resulting in the fight with the militia, who were armed with locally made, single-shot muskets.

Police reinforcements were later sent to the area, said Shehu.

Rural communities in Zamfara have been under siege for several years from cattle rustlers and kidnapping gangs, who have raided herding communities, killing, looting and burning homes.

Villages formed self-defence forces in response but they, too, are often accused of killing suspected cattle thieves, prompting reprisal attacks.

It was not clear if the latest incident was a reprisal or a raid to steal cattle.

Last month, 27 people were killed in raids by armed bandits on Kabaro and Danmami villages in the Maru district.

The Nigerian Air Force sent special forces to Zamfara last month to help drive out the marauding gangs.

The state governor ordered troops to shoot on sight anyone seen with a gun in the area.

On Wednesday, national police chief Ibrahim Idris ordered the deployment of 200 combat policemen to Zamfara and neighbouring Kaduna state, which is suffering similar problems.

Idris was reported to have given the order during a visit to Birnin Gwari district in Kaduna state, where armed bandits killed 10 gold miners last weekend.

111 Nigerian Migrants ‘Trapped’ In Libya Arrive Home Today

Featured Image

The European Union has announced that about 111 Nigerian migrants in Libya are expected to return to Nigeria today, May 3, 2018.

The Head of EU Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Ambassador Ketil Karlsen, who made this known while speaking with newsmen on the forthcoming Europe Day in Abuja on Wednesday, said another batch of 111 were scheduled to arrive Lagos on Thursday.

Ketil told newsmen that the conditions of the Nigerian migrants trapped in Libya was a matter of priority to the European Union.

He also said that the union was increasing its dialogue with partners on finding a durable and long-term solution to the problem of irregular migration.

He noted that the European Union has facilitated the safe and voluntary return of 7,720 Nigerians over the last months through partnership with International Organisation for Migration (IOM).

Ketil said. “For us it is vital that the return is done in an orderly manner where the returnees are given an opportunity to start life again. We are partnering with IOM to give them funding and vocational training for them to start something.”

The deputy Head of the EU Delegation, Richard Yang, who was also at the briefing said the EU would partner with IOM to render assistance in four areas.

“On their return, they will be granted some seed money of about €100,” he expalined. “We (the EU) will counsel and identify the vulnerable people, particularly those psychologically affected as a result of being victims of human trafficking.

“We will identify individuals interested in setting up some businesses or go into some vocational activities, or other interested in coming together in cooperatives to set up businesses.

“Then, we will work with their state or local governments, along with agencies like National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) and the towns of their origin to ensure capacity building for them.”

The president was expected in Nigeria on Wednesday, May 2, 2018.

But as of the time of filing this report on Thursday, the aircraft was still in London amidst unclear circumstances.

Only God Will Judge ‘Jonathan, Obasanjo, Others’ – Buhari

Featured Image

President Muhammadu Buhari has aimed a thinly-veiled dig at the previous leaders of the country – between 1999 and 2015 – under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), saying God will judge them for mismanaging the country’s resources.

“Nigerians know that there were no roads or rail lines, there was no power, despite the billions of dollars spent. Only God will judge this thing,” Mr Buhari said.

Buhari said the PDP, in its 16 years in power, left debts for the country despite making huge income from oil.

He also said that most youths from the northern part of the country are either uneducated or school dropouts.

The president said he approached the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) shortly after assuming office and he told him there was no money in federal coffers.

Worse still, the president said, there was no infrastructure or any developmental achievements to point to as justification for draining substantial crude oil earnings.

“In those 16 years of PDP rule, Nigeria was getting 2.1 million times 100 (2.1 million barrels by $100 per barrel) everyday, every week, but when we came on board, the price fell to between $37-38 and hung around $40-$50.

“I went to the Central Bank of Nigeria, – the governor of CBN is here – and asked him, how far? And he said nothing was left apart from debts. I said, but this is what the country made? And he said: Yes. He knew, and I asked him, where is the money? All gone,” he said.

Man Jumps To His Death At Ibadan UCH

Featured Image

A middle-aged man committed suicide on Wednesday by deliberately plunging from the fifth floor of the administrative building of the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, Oyo State.

The deceased who was said to be in his early 50s was dressed in blue native attire coupled with a pair of palm sandals when he committed the suicide in the hospital around 9am.

Confirming the incident when he spoke to newsmen, the head of the Public Relations unit of the hospital, Mr. Deji Bobade, said the man purposely went to the floor where the museum was under lock and jumped down in an attempt to commit suicide.

“As we all know, the Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) strike is on and no health worker was allowed to be at work. At about 9:00a.m. people around the ground floor of the building said they just heard the thud sound of a heavy object.

“On getting to the place, the body of a man, probably in his late 50s or early 60s, was found on the ground. Doctors around certified him dead. We contacted the Police Public Relations Officer, Adekunle Ajisebutu, who ordered his men to deposit the body in our mortuary here.

“There was no means of identification found on him but his footwear was a ‘dunlop’ rubber slippers,” he said.

Eyewitnesses told newsmen that the man climbed the handrail by the staircase of the floor, got on top of the short visor constructed as an umbrella to protect people using the stairs, and then jumped, which saw him land on the hard floor where his body could be easily seen by passers-by.

However, unconfirmed reports indicated that the man left a note indicating he was duped of N30 million and so decided to take his life. The note was said to have been taken away by the police.

2019 Polls: INEC Warns Political Parties Against Campaigning Before December

Featured Image

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Wednesday, May 2, warned political parties against engaging in electioneering before the end of the year.

The warning was issued by the Chairman of the electoral body, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, at a town hall meeting on “Health, democracy and governance: Putting health as top political agenda of Nigeria,” organised by the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA).

He lamented that even though INEC had rolled out a timetable for the 2019 general elections, politicians were flouting it and mounting campaign billboards in different parts of the country.

Yakubu said the commission was spending a huge amount of money on technology due to a lack of trust among politicians, the electorate and the commission.

The INEC Boss further said that such funds would have been channeled into useful programmes like immunisation and other health projects.

Represented by a National Commissioner, Muhammed Lecky, the INEC boss said the commission was facing challenges posed by the social media.

The Chairman, Partners for Electoral Reforms and the co-convener of Say No Campaign Nigeria, Mr.  Ezenwa Nwagwu, observed that the “pauperization of citizens by hurtful government policies, recent attempts at shutting down the corruption economy and the inability of many to adjust to the absence of free money for unbridled consumption and ostentation are a sure threat to the 2019 election.”

According to him, fake news portends real threat to the 2019 election.

Ezenwa warned that 2019 might be defined by increased political violence. “We must raise the ante and support INEC to foreclose the possibility of this happening,” he said.

How I Met A ‘Lazy Nigerian Youth In Italy’

How I Met A ‘Lazy Nigerian Youth In Italy’ – Greg Odogwu

CLICK here to read more opinion articles

I met him just before the Italian “bad season of 2017” started, during last year’s summer. Before the droughts that left the historic country paralysed, lakes evaporated and seabed transformed to baked mud. Wildfires blazed, crops damaged, and tonnes of tomatoes charred. I fervently hope this year’s would not be as bad.

This article was written by Greg Odogwu. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

It was so bad that the more than 2,800 drinking fountains known as ‘nasoni’ were turned off to conserve water. These were the taps scattered across the ancient city of Rome to dispense water at all times to help combat the usual hot summer. (The free drinking water is known by Romans as “l’acqua del sindaco” – the mayor’s water.)

Then, Pope Francis weighed in. The Vatican City turned off all fountains, including two Baroque masterpieces in St. Peter’s Square and interior fountains in the Vatican Gardens. Around 100 fountains in total were switched off. Vatican authorities declared that it was the first time the Holy City was being forced by nature to turn off the fountains.

Alas, when the heat wave subsided, intense rains visited! Major cities in Italy were flooded, buildings collapsed, power went out, subway stations and major tourist attractions were under water, speeding rivers of mud snatched cars and submerged streets.

In Rome, the beautiful and scenic Colosseum was suddenly surrounded by an emergency lake. A city that is a tourist delight suddenly turned to a turgid desert, where the traditional sight-seeing trekkers must find a rain boot to plod with.

Then, an earthquake, magnitude 4.0, shook the vacation isle of Ischia at the peak of the holiday season, killing two women and injuring 39 people. Ischia, off the coast of Naples, has a population of about 50,000 and is hugely popular with tourists, many of whom were out in bars and restaurants when the shaking started.

My meeting with the young Nigerian was unexpected. I was rushing for a meeting at Via di Vigna Murata, Rome, when I missed my way. I decided that the best strategy to meet up with my appointment was to go to any popular landmark in the area, and put a call across to my Italian colleagues so they would come and pick me up.

So, I went to a supermarket off the road. Immediately I walked up to the arcade of the mart, I saw a young black male standing in front of the place. He did not seem like a shopper to me because he was not carrying any shopping bag. He did not look like someone in a hurry. He just faced the main entrance of the supermarket with his two hands in his jacket pockets. I became suddenly aware that throughout that afternoon while on my way to Murata, I had not met any non-European. It was a high-end area of the city.

Considering that the supermarket was in an isolated location, I stopped on my track and took a second to analyse the situation. However, the first thing I noticed was that he did not look dangerous. He wore a pair of clean blue jeans and brown work boots. He had a well-groomed hair. He was neat in every sense of the word.

I then approached the man. When I got closer, I had a sudden feeling that this was a Nigerian. There was no doubt about it. At a close range, he looked smart and confident. My curiosity sharpened. I went even closer.

“Good day, bro!” I greeted. I told myself that even if he turned out to be a non-Nigerian, any black man in Europe was actually my brother, in every sense of the word.

He turned and smiled knowingly, in a manner that revealed that he had noticed me long ago, and guessed I was a Nigerian, and was wondering the same thing I was wondering – “What is this guy doing here?”

He ignored me. He turned his gaze to the entrance of the supermarket, as if waiting for a more important person to come out. Then, the automatic glass door swung open, and a big European woman dragged her shopping cart out. The Nigerian man stepped away from me and outstretched his hand to the woman. He spoke an inaudible Italian phrase.

By sheer instinct, I got the meaning of what the Nigerian said. And then, to confirm my hunch, the Italian shopper outstretched her own hand to the young Nigerian and dropped a couple of coins in the man’s up-raised right palm.

The young man was a beggar!

As the woman walked off to the parking lot opposite the mart, the Nigerian turned back towards me. This time, he smiled broadly, in a very brotherly way. One could see that now he knew that I was aware of his business at the shop, he was more comfortable with me.

“You are a Nigerian, right?” I asked the unnecessary question.

“Yes, from Edo State.” He answered. “I come here to hustle. This part of Rome is good. You will not see Nigerians dragging with you; and these people are good.”

That was how we started our chat, standing under the portico of a deluxe supermarket in a reserved area of the Eternal City. Bishop (not real name) told me that he immigrated to Italy three years earlier. In order to get his papers, he was at the refugee camp for two years, where he was given 200 Euro monthly upkeep allowance.

He told me that he was into begging because it was more lucrative than doing menial jobs. He lived in one of the far suburbs near Rome, and took the train every morning to come to commute to the city in order to beg.

He told me that in Nigeria, he was known as a very successful man working in Italy. This I later confirmed when I checked him out on social media. His profile pictures were even more appealing than his physical appearance. He told me that many people in Nigeria, both boys and girls, were falling over themselves to be his friend because they believed he was the next big thing.

There was pride in his eyes as he told me, “Ol boy, I dey run things from here! See my phone na. Dis na my local government chairman just call me dis morning. E say make I sponsor im next election. I be beggar for here, but I be big man for Naija!”

When he brought out his phone from his pocket, it was actually the latest Samsung Galaxy type.

Bishop even had some advice for me. When he saw how I called my colleagues to come and pick me up at the supermarket, and realised that their office was in that “big man area”, he told me that I should think of staying back in Italy. He told me that I should “just sacrifice two years in an asylum camp”.

When he saw how amused I was with his idea, he did not relent.

“Bros, make I tell you, even big man for Nigeria dey suffer. Anything wey you get for Naija, na suffer you go suffer to chop am. E better make you stay for here. You be Chairman, but God will bless you here more than for Naija. That na why many of us dey risk am to come here. Dying on the way to Italy is like dying on the way to heaven. It is a good death!”

The Naira on Wednesday, April 2, depreciated further to  N360.67 per dollar in the Investors and Exporters (I&E) window of the foreign exchange market even as the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), injected $210 million.

Confirming the injection, Acting Director, Corporate Communications Department, Mr. Isaac Okorafor, said:

“The apex bank offered the sum of $100 million to authorized dealers in the wholesale segment of the market. The Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (SMEs) segment received the sum of $55 million while the sum of $55 million was apportioned to invisibles such as tuition fees, medical payments and Basic Travel Allowance (BTA).”

“Data from the Financial Market Dealers Quote (FMDQ) showed that the indicative exchange rate for the I&E window rose for the second consecutive time this week to N360.67 per dollar, today, from N360.51 per dollar on Monday, translating to a 16 kobo depreciation for the naira.
