West Brom Relegated From The Premier League

Featured Image
West Brom have been relegated from the Premier League following Southampton’s 1-0 victory at Swansea City on Tuesday night.

A draw at the Liberty Stadium would have kept the Baggies’ hopes of survival alive, but Southampton now sit five points clear of West Brom with only one game left to play.

Darren Moore had overseen three wins and two draws in his five games in caretaker charge of West Brom, and their relegation has now been confirmed just hours after he was named April’s Premier League Manager of the Month.

Nonetheless, West Brom’s fate also required other results to go their way, and Manolo Gabbiadini‘s 72nd-minute strike against the Swans proved fatal for the West Midlanders’ top-flight status.

The Baggies’ relegation, which put an end to an eight-year tenure in the top flight, was confirmed just hours after Moore was named April’s Premier League Manager of the Month.

West Brom will join Stoke City in the Championship next season, while Swansea currently occupy 18th place in the table.

Paris Saint-Germain 2-0 Les Herbiers: PSG Clinch Domestic Treble With Coupe De France Win

Featured Image

PSG have won the Coupe de France thanks to a 2-0 win over Les Herbiers in Tuesday night’s final at the Stade de France.

PSG  were dominant against their opponents, who are currently fighting relegation from the third tier of French football.

Nonetheless, Les Herbiers gave a positive account of themselves against the nation’s standout side and remained in the game until well into the second half.

PSG began brightly and struck the woodwork on three occasions in the opening 20 minutes through two Giovani Lo Celso strikes and a Kylian Mbappe effort.

However, the deadlock was broken on 24 minutes through Lo Celso, who was given space and time to rifle a 25-yard effort beyond Matthieu Pichot and into the back of the net.

PSG continued to press after the restart but could not put the game out of sight come the break.

Mbappe had the ball in the back of the net on 50 minutes, but the referee consulted VAR and adjudged Marquinhos to have handled the ball in the build-up, thus disallowing the goal.

PSG were given a chance to double their lead from the spot when Pichot brought Edinson Cavani down in the area, prompting the referee to award a penalty.

Cavani stepped up and duly put his side two goals up by drilling his spot kick into the bottom corner of the net from 12 yards.

With Les Herbiers unable to find a response, the final whistle saw PSG win their fourth Coupe de France in a row and add the trophy to their Ligue 1 and Coupe de la Ligue haul for the season.

THE PLAYER: Giovani Lo Celso
The young Argentine continues to impress after finding his way into the PSG first team in the latter stages of this season. After ensuring the Ligue 1 Conforama champions did not sleepwalk into the encounter, he set them on the way to victory. Surely there is even better to come in 2018/19.

THE STAT: 42
PSG have now won their last 42 domestic cup ties. They are unbeaten since 22 January 2014 having won 23 successive Coupe de France games and 18 consecutive matches in the Coupe de la Ligue.

NAFDAC Shuts Down Three Cough Syrup Manufacturers

Featured Image

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) have shut down three leading drugs companies after a BBC investigation into addiction to cough syrup containing codeine.

According to the Agency, the firms were shut for failing to fully co-operate with its inspectors.

Nafdac Director, Mojisola Adeyeye said in a statement that the firms, Peace Standard Pharmaceuticals, Bioraj Pharmaceuticals and Emzor Pharmaceuticals had been shut because of “apparent resistance to provide needed documents during our inspection”. The companies could reopen at a later date, depending on “the level of co-operation that is shown during the comprehensive investigation” the statement added.

The agency banned the production and importation of cough syrup containing codeine on the first of May after the BBC’s undercover team caught one executive for Emzor Pharmaceuticals boasting about selling cartons on the black market.

Emzor has since denied links to the black market and said it had dismissed the employee and launched a full investigation.

Liverpool Defender Joe Gomez “Gutted” To Miss Champions League Final And World Cup

Featured Image

Liverpool and England Defender Joe Gomez has acknowledged that he is “gutted” to have been ruled out of both the Champions League final and the World Cup.

Since the end of March, Joe Gomez has suffered problems with his ankle after sustaining an injury while representing England against the Netherlands in a friendly.

After a month on the sidelines, the youngster returned to feature in two Premier League matches but after missing the last three games, Gomez has undergone surgery and will miss the showpiece events for club and country.

On Instagram, the 20-year-old said: “Gutted to confirm that my season for both club and country is over having undergone successful ankle surgery.

“Been a tough few weeks trying everything possible to be available on the pitch to help the team. I’m going to do all I can to get back and be in the best possible shape for pre season. The focus now is to support the team in the two biggest games of the season!

“Thank you for all the support over the course of the season.”

Liverpool also confirmed the news with a statement on Monday, which read: “Liverpool can confirm Joe Gomez has undergone an operation on an ankle injury. The surgery, which has now addressed the issue, means the 20-year-old will play no part in the remaining two fixtures of the 2017-18 campaign, or the World Cup finals with England.

“However, Gomez will be ready for the start of Liverpool’s pre-season training schedule in July following a rehabilitation period.”

His injury is the second big loss to both Liverpool and England, following Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s knee complaint which ended his season against Roma.

Burnley Striker Daniel Agyei Signs New Contract

Featured Image

Striker Daniel Agyei has signed a new contract with Burnley.

The 20-year-old has agreed a 12-month deal after returning to Burnley following two spells out on loan in League One this season. Agyei scored five times for Walsall in the first half of the campaign before moving to Blackpool – where he featured largely as a substitute – in January.

The youngster, who made a total of three substitute appearances for the Clarets at the end of last season, will be back for pre-season as the former AFC Wimbledon player looks to make a further mark at Turf Moor.

“I’m delighted to be staying,” Daniel Agyei said. “Hopefully I can come back next season and kick on and try and push for a place in the team.”

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Conor Mitchell has also signed a new 12-month deal with a further year’s option at Turf Moor.

Wigan Manager Paul Cook Pens New Contract At The Club

Featured Image

Wigan manager Paul Cook has signed a new four-year deal after guiding the club back to the Championship in his first season.

The 51-year-old former Chesterfield and Portsmouth boss took over the hotseat at the DW Stadium last summer and has enjoyed a stellar campaign, leading the Latics to the League One title and the FA Cup quarter-finals.

Paul Cook said: “I have loved every minute of my time here. It has been a huge team effort and I couldn’t have achieved anything here without the support of our chairman David Sharpe, chief executive Jonathan Jackson, my coaching staff, all the staff across the club and the players. It was always going to be a big challenge to win promotion immediately but a lot of hard work and endeavour has gone in from so many people, who can all look back on the past year with great pride. Our supporters have been incredible, from the first day I arrived I couldn’t have been more welcome and I look forward to seeing everyone back at the DW next season. I sit here very proud of the success we have enjoyed this season but in equal measure aware of the challenges we face moving forwards into the Championship – an exciting challenge.”

Chairman David Sharpe said: “I’m absolutely delighted to see Paul commit his long-term future to Wigan Athletic, he has been the main reason behind our success this year.

“Paul is a serial winner; to win the Sky Bet League One title with 98 points and beat Bournemouth, West Ham United and Manchester City to reach the FA Cup quarter-finals in his first season in charge is unbelievable.”

Yaya Toure Eager To Remain In The Premier League After Manchester City Exit

Featured Image

Yaya Toure plans to stay in the Premier League next season – and is willing to pay back half his wages if his new club are not satisfied with his performances.

That’s according to Toure’s agent Dimitri Seluk, who says the 34-year old is injury-free and in the best shape he’s been in for years.

“Yaya is fit and desperate to prove he’s still the best central midfielder in the Premier League,” said the agent who has represented Toure since 2001.

“Ivory Coast will not be in Russia for the World Cup and next season he will be fit, rested and stronger than ever.

“He’s happy to accept a one-year deal to stay in England. And if his club are not satisfied with his performances, he will pay back half his wages – or the club can cancel his contract immediately, with no compensation.”

Yaya Toure has won three Premier League titles, three EFL Cups and an FA Cup across 315 appearances for City, scoring 79 goals, since signing from Barcelona eight years ago.

Stoke City Owners Promise ‘Major Overhaul’ After Getting Relegated From The Premier League

Featured Image

Stoke City’s owners have this afternoon promised a “major overhaul” of the way the football club is run, following their relegation to the Championship.

They have also admitted they should have sacked Mark Hughes sooner in the season.

In a statement released on the club’s website, the Coates’ said: “The 2017/18 season has been a bitter disappointment to us all. Everybody at the club, including ourselves, are deeply hurt and frustrated at relegation.

“Hindsight is a wonderful vantage point, however, it is clear that significant errors were made in the transfer market.

“There was a desire from all of us at the club to improve the quality of the football we played, both in terms of entertainment and league position, and players were brought to the club that it was felt had the ability to help us achieve our collective aim.

“Unfortunately the squad became unbalanced and perhaps we lost some of the core values that have served us so well and are so crucial when you have a bad spell

“It is absolutely clear that a major overhaul is required. We need to regain our identity and focus and the summer will be spent doing this.”

As well as admitting to errors in player recruitment, the Coates’ have also conceded they should have replaced Mark Hughes as manager sooner.

The statement has raised some doubts over the future of Paul Lambert at the club, however, because there is no specific mention in support of his continued role at the top.

Buhari’s U.S. Food Import Deal Will Make You Poorer, Fat and Sick

Featured Image

Buhari’s U.S. Food Import Deal Will Make You Poorer, Fat and Sick, By Bámidélé Adémólá-Olátéjú

CLICK here to read more opinion articles

The deal Buhari signed with the United States has implications for Nigeria’s food security, health and economic wellbeing. With trade war brewing between China and America, Trump is looking at Nigeria as a trade anchor in West Africa. While Trump is seeking to Make America Great Again by helping farmers, Buhari is seeking to make Nigerians poorer, fatter and less food secure. In actual sense, it is a deal for and on behalf of Dangote, who is poised to become richer, stronger and more powerful.

This piece was written by Bámidélé Adémólá-OlátéjúThe views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

The food insecurity part of this deal is an article in itself. Why our leaders are notoriously shortsighted begs the question. What is the fate of a country that cannot feed itself? How does a country survive when its existence is in the hands of another? All over Nigeria, farmers are scared of cultivating their land because of insecurity. Food is expensive! Instead of tackling the root causes, we are now going to be importing Genetically Modified Food, hormone-, antibiotic- and steroid-laden meat, dairy and poultry products. In a few weeks, tonnes of grains, poultry, beef, fruits and vegetables from American farmers will flood our markets, crashing food prices across the country. What will be the fate of our struggling farmers whose products will not be able to compete in terms of price and appearance? It is shameful that this singular decision will defeat the Buhari government’s hyped agriculture and product diversification programme, which is even at best, a ruse.

There are outright bans or restrictions on the production and sale of Genetically Modified (GM) food in the European Union and nearly 50 countries of the world. The European Union, has refused to allow frankenfood, commonly referred to as Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs), into their food supply systems. Welcome to the world of huge, blemish free, perfectly waxed fruits and vegetables, in comparison to the discoloured, pest-ravaged runts sold in Nigeria. For those who do not know, American food is engineered and grown to offer beautiful, tasteless products with long shelf lives, which are sparse in nutrition and flavour but big in size. It is very much unlike our locally grown food. It is energy rich but nutrient poor. This distinction is one of the reasons why Europeans are more fit and less fat than Americans.

How did America, with all its technological know-how, get stuck in this predicament? Well, America is a victim of its own success. A strong relationship exists between the nutrient levels of the soil a plant is grown in and the nutrient value of the food that comes out of the plant. Post-industrial agricultural methods used in the United States strip enormous nutrients from the soil. America is vast! The distances covered by food as it travels from farm to the grocery stores are much more than what obtains in Europe. Americans think nothing of buying Florida oranges in Michigan and grapes from California on breakfast tables in Minnesota. In addition, for everything there is a time and season. Nature has seasons. Most Americans seem to have forgotten that. They want every food to be in season all year round. The demand for year round availability of produce has its price. When it is off-season, there is the expectation that fruits and vegetables has to be imported from the southern hemisphere.

In 2004, the Journal of the American College of Nutrition, in a landmark study, compared the nutritional content of 43 different fruits and vegetables in 1950 and 1999. The results showed that the amount of protein and essential minerals, like iron, phosphorus, calcium, vitamin C and vitamin B2, have declined tremendously in these produces over the period. The researchers attributed the decline in nutritional content to breeding practices designed to improve plant size, growth rate and pest resistance, rather than nutrition.

Food is political. It is sad that we will now be forced to embrace what Americans are starting to leave behind. Americans are buying more organic produce and products after seeing that what they have, is making them more fat and putting their health at risk. In America in the last few years, we have been noticing the shift towards “organic” or “sustainably grown” food. For instance, two summers ago, yogurt labeled as produced with milk from grass fed cows hit the store shelves. People are gravitating towards food that is naturally grown. They are tired of rubbery fruits without bruises nor the slightest sign of pest infestation. While some of us were happy that the shift to organic can make inroads for African farmers seeking dollars from affluent taste buds in the West, President Buhari has proved us wrong!

Before you think, these are worries of contentment. What does GMOs mean to your body and the planet? What does “organic” mean today? By definition, organic meat, poultry, eggs and dairy products must come from animals that have not been given antibiotics or growth hormones. Organic plant foods: fruits, vegetables, legumes and grains must be grown without using conventional pesticides, fertilisers made with synthetic ingredients or ionising radiation. For me, the two reasons why I eat organic food is to limit my exposure to pesticides, herbicides, antibiotics and hormones and out of concern for the environment. Organic products cost 40 to 120 percent more, in comparison to their conventional counterparts due to smaller production scales and higher labour costs. If you reside in Nigeria, you are probably eating mostly organic produce until you stray towards imported apples, pears and lately bananas being hawked in traffic or sold in kiosks in your neighbourhood. If you eat frozen chicken, like “orobo”, turkey and gizzard, you are on your own. Apart from antibiotics and hormones, these imported poultry have stratospheric amounts of preservatives to keep them fresh before they reach the consumers. Now that government has enabled the invasion of frankenfood, you can vote with your pocket and decide what to buy and eat.

Whatever your decision, be informed about the long-term consequences of consuming food grown and preserved by agricultural pesticides and industrial chemicals. These chemicals cannot be seen, smelled, or tasted. Nigeria does not have the competence, the wherewithal and even the political or economic will, to monitor the amount of these chemicals in your food or how it affects the food chain. Pesticide levels are not disclosed on food labels. Worse, Nigeria does not have the resources to counter the fall out from escalating obesity and health risks that these foods can bring. I urge you to stick with our open pollinated foods. Eat only organic, biodynamic foods. What we need is not poison. We want large scale food production that is sustainable, local, and organic; kinder to farm animals; and fair and just to farmers. What we need is not blind importation of harmful foods, but a food system that is healthier for people and the planet. The risk-to-reward ratio of GMO foods is not worth it. It leans heavily on the risk side. When the journey to GMO foods started, the argument was that pIants would be engineered to be more nutritionally dense. Unfortunately, it hasn’t happened that way. In Canada, De Dell Seed Company, in a study, found many nutritional deficiencies in GMO corn, in contrast to opportunity pollinated corn. Compared to open pollinated corn, GMO corn contained 56 times less magnesium, seven times less manganese and 437 times less calcium. Frighteningly, GMO corn was found to contain 13 parts per million of glyphosate. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) considers anything over 0.7 ppm as “unsafe”. Open pollinated corn contains no glyphosate. Did I hear you murmur say na something go kill person. Na true you talk but some death dey pain pass.

Wenger ‘Surprised’ At Job Offers, Urges Arsenal To Appoint His Successor Soon

Featured Image

Arsene Wenger said Tuesday he has been surprised at the number of job offers he has received since his departure from Arsenal was announced, urging the club to appoint his successor as soon as possible.

The Frenchman will step down as Gunners boss after Sunday’s Premier League trip to Huddersfield, with Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri reportedly the first choice of the Arsenal board as his replacement.

Wenger will leave after almost 22 years at the helm and was handed an emotional tribute from the club following Sunday’s 5-0 defeat of Burnley, his final game in charge at the Emirates Stadium.

The 68-year-old has said he will take a break from football before deciding on his next move but revealed on Tuesday he has not been short of suitors since last month’s surprise announcement.

Asked if he had received any offers, Wenger replied: “Yes, more than I expected!

“At the moment I focus on doing my job well. I didn’t analyse anything or consider anything. I want to work well until the last day of my contract, and then after, I will rest a little bit and go from there.”

Allegri, who is set to deliver a fourth successive Serie A title with Juventus, is reportedly the frontrunner but Carlo Ancelotti and Luis Enrique, both currently out of work, have been linked with the job.

“I think the earlier, the better,” Wenger said when asked if an appointment should be made ahead of the World Cup, but he refused to be drawn on who he favoured.

“People want hope and they need as well to prepare for the next season. I must say the squad doesn’t need much, because there’s a huge potential in there.

“There’s a good spirit, a good basis. It needs two or three additions and this team will compete for the championship next year.”

Arsenal’s last two games of the season come on the road, with the club yet to take a point away from home since the turn of the year.

Wenger is set to depart with the club finishing in sixth, the lowest position of his reign, and with no silverware following their Europa League semi-final exit at the hands of Atletico Madrid last week.

Captain Laurent Koscielny was carried off on a stretcher early on in Thursday’s 1-0 defeat in Spain and Wenger confirmed the 32-year-old is “devastated” as he faces up to six months on the sidelines with a ruptured Achilles.

Featured Image

With less than 24 hours for the 2018 Batch A Stream 1 Corps Members to end their orientation course, the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has announced an increase in transport and local allowances of corpers during orientation programmes.

This disclosure was made in a statement issued by Director Press and Publications department of the scheme, Mrs Adenike Adeyemi.

Adeyemi said 2018 Batch ‘A’ corps members lauded the increase when the Director General of the NYSC, Brigadier General Suleiman Kazaure visited the Ebonyi State Orientation Camp.

In her words: “The transport allowance for each corps member has been increased from N1,500 to N1,800, while the local allowance is now N1,400 up from N1,000.

“Kazaure said the increase was in line with the Federal Government’s approved minimum wage for Civil Servants.”

  • NYSC DG Urges Corpers To Enlist In Military

Brig.-Gen. Suleiman Kazaure, the Director-General of the Scheme, has also urged corps members to consider enlisting in the armed forces.

Kazaure gave the advice in an interview on Tuesday at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp in Sagamu, Ogun.

“With what I have witnessed here today, I can confidently state that this has been by far the best set of corps members ever received in Ogun State camp.

“Their level of discipline and adherence to the teachings of their instructors has been excellent and I urge them to maintain the status quo.

“The orientation programme was designed to help prepare corps members for the challenges ahead during their service year and these ones will do very well to cope.

“To join the army, there are guidelines. You must be physically, medically and mentally fit.

“The army will subject you to a lot of exams both written and oral before the final selection. If you meet all the required indices, you will be enlisted,” he said.

  • Insecurity: No Posting Of Corps Members To Crisis Areas

The Director-General of NYSC has also said no Corps Member would be posted to any area with security breach within the country.

He stated this today at Ogun State Orientation Camp, Sagamu, while addressing the 2018 Batch ‘A’ Corps Members.

Kazaure said the Management of the Scheme has put every necessary machinery in motion to ensure the safety of all Corps Members, but warned that on no account should any Corps Member endanger himself.

The Director-General also enjoined the Corps Members to uphold the ideals of patriotism as responsible citizens in the discharge of their duties in their different places of primary assignment.

‘I urge you to be patriotic and dedicated to your duties as you serve your fatherland’, General Kazaure added.

Ogun State Coordinator, Mr John Okpo, in his remark said there was the need for additional hostels for Corps Members and Camp Officials to ease accommodation problems in the Camp.

He also appealed to the State Government for prompt payment of State allowance of Corps Members.

Okpo said a total of 2,513 Corps Members register for the Orientation Course.

The Tincan Island Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has intercepted containers load of tramadol tablet allegedly smuggled into the country from Indian.

It is understood that a suspect was also detained in connection with importation of 40 and 20 feet containers loaded with Tramadol tablets.

How Codeine Is Creating A Generation Of Addicts In Nigeria

The controller of the Command, Musa Abdullah, who spoke on Tuesday, said that the seizure came against the backdrop of the ban on codeine syrup by the federal government.

It was gathered that the container was intercepted by officers of the command after there were attempts to smuggle them out of the seaport.

“Despite efforts to discourage importation of illicit drugs, some unrepentant fellows still engage in such misdemeanour,” Mr Abdullah said.

“One by 40 and 2 by 20 containers of Tramadol Hydrochloride 225mg which were declared electrical static converters and ciprofloxacin. We are collaborating with NAFDAC and NDLEA on this seizure.”

Tramadol, an opioid analgesic, is usually prescribed to treat moderate to moderately severe pain and is considered a safer alternative to other narcotic analgesics like hydrocodone, and methadone.

It is among the controlled drugs abused by some youths across the country causing unhealthy addiction and adverse side effects. It is believed to be fast selling and being shipped into the country through channels suspected to be unlawful.

Evans Weeps In Court, “They’ve Been Beating Me In Kirikiri”

Featured Image

Suspected kidnap kingpin, Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike, better known as Evans, broke down in tears on Monday before the Lagos State High Court in Igbosere where he was produced for arraignment on fresh two charges of kidnapping.

After initially refusing to come down from the prison van in protest, he was eventually brought into the courtroom by warders on the order of Justice Adedayo Akintoye.

When the judge acknowledged him, he said: “I have an explanation to make. Since I have been in the maximum prison, they have been maltreating me; no visit, they don’t feed me well, I have an eye problem and I cannot see afar.”

According to him, he was kept in solitary confinement and was denied access to his visitors.

But he was countered by one of the prison officials from Kirikiri Maximum Prison, who maintained that Evans was being given the same treatment as other inmates.

“We have been treating him very well; he is well fed and people have been visiting him. A doctor has been checking him; the doctor came to check him yesterday (Sunday) and even this morning before coming to court, because he was saying he can’t be in court, that he is not feeling fine.

“But when the doctor checked him yesterday (Sunday) and this morning, the doctor said he was healthy and that he saw no reason why he couldn’t be in court,” the official said.

Reacting to this, the trial judge asked the prison officials to treat him well, emphasising that Evans had not been convicted.

The judge stood down the case but as soon as he rose, Evans broke down in tears, saying: “What have I done to you people? They have been beating me; no good food; I have been locked up in one place since last year; why are they taking my case personally? Why do you people want to kill me.”

Ikorodu Oro Festival: Lagos Monarch, CP Say Women Free To Move Around

Featured Image

The Lagos State Police Command and the traditional ruler in Ikorodu, on Monday evening, allayed fears of residents following apprehension making rounds on social media that females around Ikorodu area should stay indoors and refrain from moving around town, on Tuesday, May 8, for the Oro Day festival.

In a statement jointly signed by the State Commissioner of Police, Imohimi Edgal, and the Ayangburen of Ikorodu, Oba Kabiru Shotobi, shortly after a meeting, the Command assured the womenfolk of their safety and right of freedom of movement blaming the report that went viral on mischief makers.

The joint statement came following the circulation on social media of a letter purportedly written by Mr Shotobi to the organisers of the Oro festival stating that women are forbidden from moving around the town during the festival.

Ikorodu Oro Festival

Ikorodu Oro Festival (letter)

“This is to notify you of the above mentioned festival which is slated for Tuesday 8th May 2018, according to tradition all female are forbidden to be seen outside their homes or move around the town on this date which is Oro Day,” the letter stated.

But the statement released by SP Chike Oti, Police Public Relations Officer, Lagos Police Command, read:

“The attention of the Lagos State Police Command has been drawn to the news making the rounds on the social media  that the female gender is forbidden to be seen outside their homes or move around the town with effect from tomorrow 8/05/2018 being the day set aside as ORO DAY.

“In view of the above, the CP Lagos called for a meeting attended by the Ayangburen of Ikorodu, Oba Kabiru Shotobi, Palace Chiefs and the Commissioner for Local Government and Community Affairs, Alhaji Muslim Folami.

“The Oba stated during the meeting that it is unthinkable for a man with his level of exposure to do or say anything that would be seen as discriminatory against the female gender.

“He, however, acknowledged that the festival is an age-long tradition of Ikorodu people which had been even before he was born. He added that the festival would hold without denying the female folks their right of freedom of movement,” the statement said.

The statement also quoted the Commissioner of Police as saying that the Command would not tolerate any discriminatory tradition against the female gender, warning that the Command would deal ruthlessly with anybody who hides under the guise of custom or tradition to forment trouble in the state.

Imohimi, therefore, enjoined women to go about their lawful business without let or hindrance.

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), has wielded the big stick on three pharmaceutical firms, Emzor Pharmaceuticals Ind. Ltd., Peace Standard Pharmaceutical Limited and Bioraj Pharmaceutical Limited that were implicated in the codeine syrup scandal following the BBC documentary.

Last week, the federal government of Nigeria had announced a ban on the production and import of cough syrup containing codeine.

The three companies listed above were shut by NAFDAC after their indictment in the BBC documentary.

Codeine Ban: Lagos Unveils New Strategy To Tackle Drug Abuse

Speaking on this in a statement, the NFDAC Director General, Prof Mojisola Adeyeye, said the decision was taken following findings from investigations and inspections at the companies.

“Due to insufficient evidence gathered and apparent resistance to provide needed documents during an inspection on May 2, 2018, at the respective companies in Ilorin and Lagos, respectively, it has become necessary to shut down all product lines of the three companies,” Prof. Adeyeye said in a statement on Monday.

She added: “The respective companies in Ilorin and Lagos, Peace Standard Pharmaceutical Limited. Plots 3 & 8, Adewole Industrial Estate, Lubcon Avenue, Ilorin, Kwara State; Bioraj Pharmaceutical Limited. No 405 Kaima Road, Ilorin, Kwara State and Emzor Pharmaceuticals Ind. Ltd., Ajao Estate, Lagos.”

According to her, this is to allow for a full and comprehensive investigation.  The three companies therefore remain closed.

She noted however that, the reopening of the manufacturing companies will depend on the level of cooperation that is shown during the comprehensive investigation.

“The reopening of the manufacturing companies will depend on the level of cooperation that is shown during the comprehensive investigation,’’ the statement said.

Buhari Off To London For His Third Medical Trip In 15 Months

Featured Image

President Muhammdu Buhari will travel to London on another medical trip today (May 8), some eight months after returning from the last one and it is expected to last for four days, says the presidency.

The Presidency said yesterday that the President will honour an appointment having been told to return for a “meeting with his doctor.”

A statement by the Senior Special Assistant on Media and publicity Garba Shehu, said in the course of the technical stop-over for aircraft maintenance in London on his way back from Washington DC last week, the President had a meeting with his doctor.

He was requested to return for a meeting which he agreed to do.

He is expected back on Saturday and “on his return, the President’s two-day state visit to Jigawa (State), which was postponed because of the All Progressives Congress, APC’s Ward Congresses, will now take place on Monday and Tuesday..”

This is Buhari’s third trip to London since the start of last year. The first medical trip, in February 2017, lasted 50 days while he was away for over 100 days for the second between May and August.

At the time, Buhari left the door open to further trips to seek further treatment.

This is also his fourth medical trip since taking office: in June 2016, he visited London over an ear infection.
