Nigerian Govt Warns All Federal Universities Not To ‘Charge Tuition Fees’

Featured Image

In what seems to be cautionary words from the federal government of Nigeria, the Federal Executive Council (FEC) on Wednesday reiterated the tuition-free status of federal universities nationwide.

This was made by the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Anthony Anwuka, when he spoke to State House correspondents at the end of the council’s meeting presided over by Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo.

“The FEC restated government’s position that no federal university should charge tuition fees,” Anwuka said.

He said government would investigate some universities accused of flouting the law.

The minister, however, said various universities’ councils and managements were free to fix “auxiliary fees” which must be affordable and acceptable to students.

He said, “FEC discussed the issue of school fees in the various universities and noted that, as of law, no federal university should charge tuition fees.

“We understand that some universities now charge fees per course unit and we are going to make sure that we investigate that properly and make sure it stops.

“Students can pay other auxiliary fees, but not in excess.

“Various university councils and management should be able to fix what fees students should pay that are affordable and acceptable to the students. That is the position.

“The Federal Government does not determine fees for private and state universities, we only take responsibility for fees paid in the federal universities.”

Yaya Toure One Of Premier League’s Greatest Midfielders’ – Frank Lampard

Featured Image

Frank Lampard has paid tribute to Yaya Toure, describing the outgoing Manchester City midfielder as one of the toughest opponents that he has ever faced.

Pep Guardiola confirmed last week that Yaya Toure is to leave the club this summer when his contract expires, ending his eight-year stay with the reigning Premier League champions.

Ahead of what is expected to be the Ivorian’s final match as a City player against Brighton & Hove Albion on Wednesday night, Lampard has talked up the impact made by Toure during his time in Manchester.

“I would put Yaya Toure in the top five of the toughest midfield opponents I faced in my career, and at his peak he could change games on his own,” he told BBC Sport. “Steven Gerrard probably edges it as the best I have played against, for his consistency over the years, but Yaya is up there along with Roy Keane, Patrick Vieira and Paul Scholes – which shows how highly I rate him.

“Every midfielder has different attributes but the best players are the ones you fear, and I certainly did that when I was up against Yaya. Even some of the very best play within themselves slightly, but he didn’t. He would hurt you by going forward and by scoring goals at the end of it, which is always a great trait that not many midfield players have.

“When I faced him, I knew he was very good on the ball and could pass it around me if he wanted to. He knew the moments to keep it simple and move the ball around. But if you got too close to him to try to stop him doing that, he also had that ability to drive through midfield and his physical power and pace – which was deceptive because of his big stride – made it so difficult to stay with him.”

Manchester United Prepared To Sell As Many As Five Goalkeepers

Featured Image
Manchester United are prepared to sell as many as five goalkeepers at the end of the season, according to a report.

Manchester United are said to be preparing a mass clearout between the sticks below first-team level, including the departures of Theo Richardson and Max Johnstone.

Richardson has made two starts for the club’s Under-23s side this term, while Johnstone – the younger brother of fellow keeper Sam – has not made a single appearance at Under-18s level or above.

The Manchester Evening News claims that Dean Henderson and Belgian teenager Ilias Moutha-Sebtaoui are also expected to move on before the start of next season, with the latter recently having a trial with Anderlecht.

Sam Johnstone is a confirmed target for Aston Villa, meanwhile, having impressed on loan with the Championship side this term.

U23 regular Kieran O’Hara, Joel Pereira and number two stopper Sergio Romero have all signed new United contracts over the last year. Jose Mourinho said there was ‘no chance’ of David de Gea leaving and United intend to offer him improved terms.

Michael Carrick To Start For Manchester United Vs Watford In Final Old Trafford Appearance

Featured Image

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has revealed that Michael Carrick will start Sunday’s Premier League match against Watford at Old Trafford.

Michael Carrick will retire from professional football this summer to join Mourinho’s backroom staff.

The 36-year-old has only played 24 minutes of Premier League football during the 2017-18 campaign, but will line up for the club’s final league game of the season this weekend.

Mourinho was also keen to pay tribute to the Englishman’s character during Wednesday’s pre-match press conference ahead of the West Ham United clash.

“He will start the last match. Old Trafford, last match of the Premier League. Our captain in front of our fans, he will start the match against Watford,” Mourinho told reporters.

“The most important quality is to be a man, M-A-N, capitals, a proper man and football is not full of them and not just football, society is not full of them, so when you find one of them you have to value and you have to keep and in this case it is not about me, it is about the club.”

They had a great man playing football, but when his body says enough, we want to keep the man.

“He has qualities that we believe can make him a good coach, and there are many ways to make a bridge.

“Some guys prefer to study, go to youth football, but in this situation, we decided the bridge can be the bridge — change shirts, dressing rooms and offices and start to be an assistant.

Mourinho added: “I give them very good conditions for their evaluation and I think Michael can be very positive for us.”

Report: Roma Defender Kostas Manolas ‘Offered To Real Madrid’

Featured Image

Real Madrid have been offered Roma defender Kostas Manolas, reports Marca.

The Greece international’s agent recently offered his client to various teams, focusing mainly on Real Madrid due to the fact that the Bernabeu giants are believed to be looking for a new centre-back.

Madrid analysed the proposal but, for the moment, the 26-year-old does not feature on their shortlist of targets.

Roma need to raise funds and Kostas Manolas, who joined from Olympiacos in 2014, could be sacrificed to bring in money this summer.

Arsenal reportedly tried and failed to sign Manolas in the closing stages of the January transfer window.

Japanese Club Vissel Kobe Deny Making A Bid For Andres Iniesta

Featured Image

Japan’s Vissel Kobe have denied making a big-money offer to bring Barcelona star Andres Iniesta to the J-League, local media reported on Wednesday.

Kobe sports director Atsuhiro Miura insisted that reports club president Hiroshi Mikitani had offered the Spanish World Cup winner a three-year deal and a salary of $30 million were wide of the mark.

“I’m amazed, I haven’t heard anything about that,” Miura said in quotes cited by AFP.

“To be honest, that amount of money doesn’t seem realistic to me. If he actually came he would be incredible, but it’s not realistic.”

Miura admitted he had accompanied Mikitani to Spain to watch last weekend’s “El Clasico” between Barcelona and Real Madrid but insisted talks with Iniesta “had not taken place.”

Australian football chiefs have also reportedly expressed their interest in bringing Iniesta to the A-League.

Wrong Dictionary Definition! Nigerian Lawyer Sues Oxford University

Featured Image

An activist, Ogedi Ogu, has asked a Lagos High Court Igbosere, to order Oxford University Press to pay N10 million as damages, over alleged wrong word definition.

Mr Ogu, counsel representing a claimant, Emmanuel Ofoegbu, urged the court to direct Oxford to ensure that all dictionaries published by them, includes a caveat which states that:

“The dictionaries are made available as a reference tool only, and that anyone who relies on definition of words in their dictionary as an alternative to seeking independent legal or financial advice, does so at his own risk.”

Joined in the suit as first defendant is the University of Oxford while Oxford University Press is sued as second defendant.

In the statement of claim, the claimant said that English is not his mother tongue, adding that the first defendant is reputed to be an authority in English language.

He argued that a great majority of people around the world rely on its definition of English words.

According to him, in 2005 and 2006, he purchased the Oxford Mini reference Dictionary, and the Oxford English Mini Dictionary respectively, published by the second defendant.

He said that in the dictionaries, the word “Mortgagee’’ is defined as the Borrower in a Mortgage transaction, while “Mortgagor’’ is defined as the Lender.

He said that he had relied on this definition and during one of his legal advice to a professional colleague he had boldly stated that a Mortgagee is a borrower while a Mortgagor is a lender as extracted from the authority of the Oxford Dictionaries.

According to him, his professional colleagues then drew his attention to the correct position in many other dictionaries apart from Oxford, which defines the word Mortgagee to be the Lender and Mortgagor to be the borrower.

He said that he was thoroughly embarrassed and has since then suffered loss of professional esteem, as his colleagues had stopped asking for his opinion or advice on any legal issue.

The claimant said that on November 4, 2016, he instructed his lawyers to issue a notice to the defendants, of his intention to institute action to seek redress against them, for the wrong definition.

He said that on November 30, 2016, the defendants replied his letter signed by its legal Director, admitting the wrong definition complained of, but refused to accept any liability and added as follows:

“Our dictionaries are made available as a reference tool only; they are never held out by OUP as being an alternative to seeking independent legal or financial advice, and we cannot take responsibility for an individual’s decision to use them as such.”

The claimant therefore, argued that the loss of his professional esteem was occasioned by the defendant’s negligence and therefore, claimed the sum of N10 million in damages against the defendants.

The claimant also sought a court’s order, directing the defendants to ensure that all dictionaries published by them, have a caveat warning readers that they are only available as reference tools, and that anyone who relies on them as an alternative to seeking legal or financial advice, does so at his risk.

The new suit is labelled Temp/36433/2018, and no date has been fixed for hearing.

CBN Boosts Nigeria’s Forex Market With $210 Million

Featured Image

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on Tuesday, May 8, boosted the country’s inter-bank Foreign Exchange market with another sum of $210 million.

While the apex bank offered $100 million to authorised dealers in the wholesale segment of the market, the Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (SMEs) segment got $55 million while the sum of $55 million was apportioned to invisibles such as tuition fees, medical payments and Basic Travel Allowance (BTA).

CBN’s Acting Director, Corporate Communications Department, Isaac Okorafor, confirmed the figures and reiterated CBN’s capacity to continue to sustain the foreign exchange intervention.

He urged authorized dealers to help sustain the confidence in the foreign exchange market by continuing to honour requests from customers with genuine needs.

It will be recalled that the Central Bank of Nigeria last Friday, May 4, 2018 intervened in the Secondary Market Intervention Sales (SMIS) to the tune of $349.34m.

Meanwhile, the Naira, on Tuesday, May 8, 2018, continued to maintain its stability in the FOREX market, exchanging at an average of N362/$1 in the BDC segment of the market.

Also, traders said the currency started to weaken last week as demand piled up especially from companies seeking to repatriate dividends and investors booking profits from local assets. Importers buying goods from abroad were also exerting pressure on the naira.

Nigeria emerged from its first recession in a quarter of a century last year but growth is still fragile. It then introduced a multiple exchange rate regime to manage dollar demand as a way to alleviate chronic shortages on the currency markets.

Police IG Snubs Senate The Third Time | Lawmakers Declare Him ‘Enemy Of Democracy’

Featured Image

The Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, has failed to honour an invitation to appear before the Senate for the third time.

Mr Idris, who has ignored the lawmakers for three weeks, was first summoned on April 25 to answer questions on the arrest of Senator Dino Melaye, and killings across the country.

On the day he was expected, the chairman of senate committee on police affairs, Abu Ibrahim, informed the lawmakers that the IGP had accompanied President Muhammadu Buhari to Bauchi.

The Senate re-summoned Mr Idris after it refused to allow the deputy Inspector-General of Operations to represent him.

He was also invited to appear on May 2 by 11 a.m. again, but did not show up.

Once again, the Senate issued a third summons following a suggestion by the senate president, Bukola Saraki and Mr Idris was asked to attend the senate plenary today, May 9.

Premium Times reports that when it was time for the IGP to be ushered in to the senate chamber, the lawmakers realised Mr Idris was not available.

Mr Saraki announced his non-appearance after some minutes of wait to allow him into the chamber.

“I’ve just been informed that the IG or any member of his team are not here,” he said.

Meanwhile, following his absence at plenary, lawmakers of the senate have declared Mr Idris, an ‘enemy of democracy,’ who is not fit to hold public office in Nigeria and abroad.

The decision of the Senate was announced by the Senate President after a closed-door session on Wednesday.

The closed-door session was entered following Mr Idris’ refusal to honour an invitation to appear before the Senate a third time.

On return to plenary, Mr Saraki announced the decision of his colleagues.

“The Senate in a closed session deliberated on the non-appearance of the IGP to the senate to the plenary after a series of invitation. The Senate noted that this has been a gross disrespect to our constituted authority and to also know that his earlier refusal to appear before investigative committee was overruled by competent court of jurisdiction just in April this year.

“The Senate therefore views this persistent refusal is a great danger to our democracy and hence the Senate resolved to declare IGP as an enemy of democracy and not fit to hold any public office within and outside Nigeria. The leader of the Senate would also mandate to look into the matter for further necessary action,” Mr Saraki said.

What Exactly Are Doctors Doing In Nigeria?

What Exactly Are Doctors Doing In Nigeria? Mayowa Tijani

CLICK here to read more opinion articles

It was the night of December 22, 2002. I was rushed to the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan. I was terribly sick; the hospital had no oxygen as at the time I was admitted, and I was severely low on oxygen. I missed a date with death by a few seconds. I needed a miracle and God showed up — it was a medical miracle.

My packed cell volume (PCV), which is the volume percentage of red blood cells in blood, was at five percent, about seven times less than what was expected. I was medically damaged. I had suffered in the days leading to this eventual admission. I was only 12.

This piece was written by Mayowa Tijani and was first published on TheCable. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

I remember all that pain and trauma like it happened yesterday. The sickness was not all that was wrong; the tears flowing down my strong mother’s eyes broke my spirit. My father braved it all, but I knew he was hurt beyond words. My favourite aunt, was a nurse at UCH, she helped in ways she could, and periodically told me to be strong. She too was torn beyond words. My family was in pain, and I was the cause of it. I blamed myself.

I was one of the eldest children at Otunba Tunwase Children’s Emergency Ward. I was not scared of death, but I was scared of the pain it would put all these people through. The money my parents had spent, the love my siblings had shown, the care my aunt and cousins showered to this dying boy — I was scared of letting all that go to waste. So I fought for my life, and begged that God kept me strong and healthy for them. I survived, thanks to God and his messengers, who were in the form of skilled doctors.

My survival was made possible through the seasoned hands and steady minds of the likes of Professor Yetunde Aken’ova, Dr. Taiwo Kotila and many other medical specialists who beat the conditions of their employment to save lives in Nigeria’s under-served hospitals.

Based on this, and some other social experiences, Nigeria is personal for me; it is not my ambition to see a better Nigeria, it is a calling, a responsibility. So when I am making demands on government and policymakers to act on one issue or the other, I am not being political, I am not trying to be correct, I am just simply asking that they put facilities in place to make Nigerians need fewer miracles.

THE CRISIS ON OUR HANDS

Today, President Muhammadu Buhari is in the United Kingdom, treating an unknown ailment. I want to believe it is not just because he is president. As a former head of state, if he was not president today, and he takes ill, he would most probably go to the same doctors in the UK — because he has little or no faith in our medical system, and then we may not blame him as much as we do today.

But Buhari is really not my worry today. My grouse is with the system that produces his ilk.

There is a crisis in Nigeria’s healthcare system, and for today, my focus will be on the doctors. As far back as 2010, World Bank data have shown that Nigeria has one doctor to 2,531 people. The World Health Organisation prescribes one doctor to 600 people. The likes of Mexico, Mongolia, Australia, United States, United Kingdom, Italy, Spain and even Libya meet the WHO requirement. And many of them do so on the backs of Nigerian doctors abroad.

This means that the Nigerian doctor works at least four times more than his counterpart in any of these countries and earns way less than they do. The numbers are even worse today. We have about one doctor to over 6,000 Nigerians.

There is, therefore, no reason to wonder why a poll conducted by NOI polls and Nigeria Health Watch in 2017 found that 88 percent — almost nine in 10 — Nigerian doctors were actively seeking an opportunity to go abroad to practice. At the time the survey was conducted, a majority of Nigerian doctors were — and are currently — registered for medical exams like PLAB in the UK, USMLE for the United States, MCCE for Canada, AMC for Australia and DHA for Dubai. Most of our best minds are leaving!

5,264 NIGERIAN DOCTORS WORKING IN THE UK

Most recently, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, former Commonwealth Secretary-General, said 4,795 Nigerian doctors were currently working in the UK. Making specific reference to July, 2017. According to the UK General Medical Council, holding data on doctors in the UK, 5,250 Nigerian doctors were working in the UK as at April 25, 2018.

Checking the same data today, May 5, 2018, that number has grown to 5,264 — an increase of 14 doctors in 10 days. Africa Checks has shown that an average of 12 doctors move to the UK every week! Every seven days — or five working days — 12 Nigeria-trained doctors move to the UK!

After the same order, thousands of Nigerian doctors are working in the US, Canada, Australia, United Arab Emirates, and many other nations of the world. More than half of the 72,000 registered doctors in Nigeria now work abroad.

A LAND WITHOUT DOCTORS

In 2017, a friend of mine, who is a fresh doctor from UCH, told me about his plans to move to Canada by 2018. I attempted convincing him to stay, and was making some progress until I said: “Nigeria needs you”. He laughed and said “Nigeria does not need its own president, so how will Nigeria need him, an ordinary doctor”. This was at the time the president was in the UK for medical care.

Recently, I asked him some questions, and while answering, he said: “What is a doctor doing in Nigeria?”

And that is my question today: What exactly is a doctor doing in Nigeria? When he can get 10 times his Nigerian pay by moving to Canada, US, UK or UAE, to do almost 10 times less work! What exactly is a doctor doing in Nigeria, when the government will call him names, and ask him to respect the Hippocratic oath when the same government has not respected the oath it swore to the people?

What is a doctor doing in Nigeria, when he knows what to do to save a life but is handicapped by the absence of oxygen, blood, sterile needles, and the very basic needs of his profession.

I think of what would have happened to me if the likes of Professor Aken’ova and her team of young doctors were not available that night in December 2002. Your guess is as good as mine. So today, I ask that Nigeria must act, lest she becomes a land without doctors.

Bring On The Golden State Warriors vs The Houston Rockets #NBAPlayoffs

Featured Image

The series the entire Basketball world has been waiting for is finally just days away, and for once it’s not LeBron James going against the might of the Golden State Warriors.

Back in June, when the Houston Rockets backed by the power of a Mike D’Antoni offence and a scorned “should-be MVP” in James Harden acquired Chris Paul from the Los Angeles Clippers, the countdown began almost immediately. We were all counting the days until this Houston experiment would inevitably have to go up against the Warriors in the Western Conference Finals.

Golden State Warriors

Chris Paul and James Harden

You might say “but haven’t they met already this season?” and you would be right. The two Western Conference powerhouses have locked horns three times already this season with the Rockets winning two of those encounters but as we all know Golden State fresh off three NBA finals and two Championships didn’t look as interested through most of the regular season. Add that to the fact that they kept dealing with injuries to key players and Playoff defence is a totally different animal and we can all gree we have no idea what we’re getting in this matchup.

The Rockets redesigned their entire roster during the offseason with the Warriors in mind, getting the kind of versatile defensive players and 3-point shooters who could help them keep up with the free shooting Golden State. Hopefully their plan works better than the Toronto Raptors who just got swept by LeBron and the Cavaliers even though they spent the last three years preparing for that matchup.

These have been the two best teams in the NBA this season and the Western Conference Finals is basically the main event we’ve all been waiting for. That being said, WARRIORS IN 6.

See tip off times for the Western Conference Finals adjusted to Nigerian time.

Game 1 in Houston. Tuesday 15th May. 2:00am

Game 2 in Houston.  Thursday 17th May. 2:00am

Game 3 in Golden State. Monday 21st April. 1:00am

Game 4 in Golden State. Wednesday 23rd April. 2:00am

Game(s) 5 – 7 to be decided if necessary

17 Nigerian Migrants Drag Italy To European Court

Featured Image
Survivors of a November sea rescue operation by the Libyan coastguard have filed a lawsuit against Italy with the European Court of Human Rights, saying Rome was ultimately responsible for Libyan “violent and reckless” actions.Announced by human rights groups at a press conference on Tuesday, the case was brought by 17 Nigerians who accuse Italy of violating their human rights through what they call the “subcontracting” of migrant rescue operations to Libya. Both countries struck a controversial deal in February 2017 aimed at stemming the flow of people trying to cross the Mediterranean in the hope of arriving in Europe.

Lawyers prosecuting the case say they want the court to order Italy to pay “moral reparations” and end the agreement, which it says violates international law, as was ruled in 2012 for a similar deal struck between former Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi and dictator Moamer Kadhafi in 2008.

The agreement has been hailed as a success in Italy thanks to an over 80 percent drop in arrivals so far in 2018 compared to the same period of last year, according to Interior Ministry figures.

However, the lawsuit argues that Italy was responsible both for the actions of the Libyan rescuers due to their fundamental help with logistics, and liable for the subsequent abuses in Libyan detention centres, which are well-documented.

Libya only has the capability to intercept migrant ships thanks to EU funding and support from both the Italian coast guard in Rome and an Italian Navy ship located off the coast of Tripoli.

The lawsuit was filed on Thursday and originates from a search-and-rescue operation on November 6 involving NGO Sea Watch which saw the German charity tussle with a Libyan coast guard vessel for the migrants.

Sea Watch estimates “at least” 20 people died and claims the Libyan coastguard “beat and threatened” survivors as they pulled them out of the sea and off a stricken dinghy, while some dived back into the sea in an effort to reach the Sea Watch boat.

Five bodies were recovered during the operation, which saw 59 people rescued and taken to Italy by Sea Watch and 47 returned to Libya.

Once the sea had been cleared of survivors the Libyans sped off with one person hanging off the side, prompting an Italian navy helicopter to move in to tell the Libyans to slow their vessel down.

The rights groups, including Sea Watch, told reporters that fifteen of the claimants were in Italy while the other two were back in Nigeria after spending time in a Libyan Department of Combatting Illegal Migration (DCIM) facility.

The two were given a choice between going home or staying in a DCIM centre, places which United Nations human rights chief Zeid Ra’ad al Hussein called “an outrage to humanity” after UN monitors visited the country in November.

The UN slammed conditions in the facilities, where they saw “emaciated and traumatised men, women and children piled on top of one another” and gathered eye-witness reports of people being beaten or jabbed with cattle prods if they ask for food or medicine.

2 Cases Confirmed, 17 Deaths Recorded As Ebola Returns To DR Congo

Featured Image

An Ebola outbreak has been declared in the north-west of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) with two confirmed cases of the virus and 17 deaths, the health ministry said on Tuesday.

The incident in the town of Bikoro comes more than a year after an outbreak in the country killed four people.

“Our country is facing another epidemic of the Ebola virus, which constitutes an international public health emergency,” the ministry said in a statement.

“We still dispose of the well trained human resources that were able to rapidly control previous epidemics,” it said.

This is the ninth time Ebola has been recorded in the central African nation, whose eastern Ebola River gave the deadly virus its name when it was discovered there in the 1970s, and comes less than a year after its last outbreak, which killed eight people.

Before the outbreak was confirmed, local health officials reported 21 patients showing signs of hemorrhagic fever around the village of Ikoko Impenge, near the town of Bikoro. Seventeen of those later died.

Medical teams supported by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and medical charity Doctors Without Borders were dispatched to the zone on Saturday and took five samples from suspected active cases.

Two of those samples tested positive for the Zaire strain of the Ebola virus, the ministry said.

“Since notification of the cases on 3 May, no deaths have been reported either among the hospitalised cases or the healthcare personnel,” the statement said.

Ebola virus disease, formerly known as Ebola haemorrhagic fever, is a severe, often fatal illness in humans.

The virus is transmitted to people from wild animals and spreads in the human population through human-to-human transmission.

It is believed to be spread over long distances by bats, which can host the virus without dying. These animals then infect other tree-dwelling creatures such as monkeys.

Ebola can often spread to humans from infected bushmeat.

Female Suicide Bombers Kill Selves In Failed Borno Mosque Attack

Featured Image

Two female suicide bombers have reportedly killed themselves in the early hours of Wednesday morning while attempting to attack a mosque in Borno State, North-east Nigeria.

Channels TV reports that the Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr. Damian Chukwu, confirmed this in a statement personally signed by him.

In the statement, the CP said the attackers tried to gain entry into the Alhaji Bunu Mosque during the morning prayers in Jiddari Polo general area on the outskirts of Maiduguri, the state capital.

Chukwu added that the bombers who were between the ages of 13 and 16 years were, however, prevented by the policemen on patrol and unarmed vigilante men also praying in the same mosque.

“In the ensuing stampede, both bombers ran into an uncompleted building in the neighbourhoods, collided and simultaneously exploded, killing only themselves,” he said.

The police commissioner affirmed that no other casualty was recorded in the incident.

He noted that normalcy has been restored in the area and the remains of the girls have been evacuated.

Chukwu also said the police and the EOD team deployed have sanitised and rendered the area safe.

Minister Proposes One Year Re-schooling For Fresh Nigerian Graduates

Featured Image
The Minister of State for Education, Professor Anthony Anwukah, has put forward a proposal for Nigerian students to spend an extra year in specialized institutions after graduation from the University.
Professor Anwukah’s proposal was tabled at the ongoing retreat for Governing Councils of Nigerian Federal Universities, organized by the National Universities Commission (NUC) with the theme, “Elements of Statutory Governance, Procurement and Financial Accounting in Nigerian Universities”. He added that many university graduates were not good enough for employment so there was the need for specialized re-schooling.
“Law students attend law school for one year before going for NYSC and medical students go for one year housemanship before they are allowed to practice fully, so it will be necessary for other courses to also go through this process,” Mr Anwukah said.
The Lagos Business School can also serve as a one year after-school training. The universities are producing products that are not matching the needs of the industries. I urged the committee of pro-chancellors and committee of vice-chancellors to end the decline in the standard of education. The SIWES projects introduced for a year industrial attachment for students has failed in the universities. It is not doing its role in bridging the gap between the universities and the industries,” he said.
When contacted by reporters to shed more light on his proposal, Anwukah said,
“We are trying to sell an idea, the proposal is to get into our university system the re-schooling concept, that is you finish your university degree may be add one more year as a finishing school project, I don’t know how it is going to sell… but the idea has come as a result of the failure of SIWES system in the universities. We try to address the relationship between the universities, the industries and the graduates, how they can fit in and we introduced the SIWES project and it is not working and it is not providing that bridge between the industries because the most industries are unwilling to accept most students on the SIWES programme. We want to brainstorm and see whether we can add one additional year so that when a student finishes from the university he can now go out to industries for one year internship for that job. For instance, the law department had one extra year after the law programme they go to law school, doctors go for one additional year.”
“Are we going to continue with the SIWES experiment which is not working or we are going to brace up to introduce an additional year of re-school whereby you spend that one year in any industry. “For instance, the Lagos Business School can serve as one year learning experience for students in business, accountancy and others, the NTA school in Jos can handle that of journalists.”
