Comrade Adams Oshiomole To Contest For APC Chairmanship

Featured Image
Former Labor President and Ex-Governor of Edo State, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole has formally declared his intention to run for the office of the Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC.
The former labour leader made the declaration on Thursday at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja. Comrade Oshiomhole is expected to be the main challenger to current chairman of the APC, John Odigie-Oyegun, if the latter does decide to seek re-election.
In his speech, Oshiomhole also expressed gratitude to Oyegun, for leading the party to victory in the 2015 presidential elections.

“It is right to appreciate the efforts of the sitting chairman, my own brother, my own elder but also my predecessor the first governor of Edo state John Odigie-Oyegun,” He said.

“I want to place on record my gratitude and my appreciation of the leadership he has provided. Whatever anybody wants to say I believe he chaired the party to victory in the 2015 election and history will record that in his favour along with other laudable things he has done to keep our party afloat up to this moment.

“I am seeking to contest for the same office based on the principle that in the 21st century, in the past the conservative notion was if it is not broken you don’t mend it but in the digital world anything and everything can be better.

“I am contesting not because I think it is a leadership failure, I am contesting because I think as it is expected in our constitution of our party and even of our country, democracy work better when from time to time new blood new ideas are allowed.”

The APC’s elective convention is scheduled for June.

APC Makes PDP Party Of Saints

APC Makes PDP Party Of Saints, By Azu Ishiekwene

CLICK here to read more opinion articles

Offices of the All Progressives Congress (APC) across the country are still littered with broken bones, bloodied faces and shredded tallies from the party’s ward congresses last weekend.

This piece was written by Azu Ishiekwene. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

In virtually all the states, the ward congresses were marred by violence, with special drama in Anambra where the minister of labour and productivity, Chris Ngige, and a former governorship candidate of the party, Tony Nwoye, could not even agree on whether what was held was a congress or an imaginary reunion of the clan.

It was worse – a bloody shambles – in Delta State. One of the aspirants, Jeremiah Oghoveta, was stabbed in the neck by a thug who fled and left his victim to die.

Suddenly, the party that promised change is making the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) look like amateur thugs. By the fruit of the ward congresses, APC and PDP have shown, yet again, that they are different branches of the same blighted tree.

The ward congresses were an utter disgrace and it remains to be seen if the leader of the APC, President Muhammadu Buhari, would look beyond the smokescreen in his corner in Daura and find the courage to tell his party that it has fallen short of honour.

If Buhari is unable to do this, I can understand why. What the party is today is largely what he has made it. It’s true that party discipline tends to be stronger under the parliamentary system. But even under our presidential system, we have had party leaders who combined the useful features of both systems to give their party a spine.

If former President Olusegun Obasanjo were not his capricious self, for example, he would probably be a good example of a party whip-in-chief in recent times.

Buhari never seems to be interested, and it’s such an irony that this man ran for the Presidency four times. After declaring at his inauguration that he was for everyone and yet for no one, it turned out that what he probably meant was that he was for himself and no one else.

Immediately after his election, he abandoned his party and recessed into his royal court in the Presidential Villa.

Once that happened, the various tendencies within the newly formed APC, comprising the CPC, ACN, ANPP, nPDP and a faction of APGA, fanned out in a do-or-die power struggle to fill the void.

Even remnants of core PDP elements in government took advantage of the internecine war and Buhari’s indifference to embed in the new administration, forcing First Lady Aisha Buhari to warn of a potential rebellion in the APC rank and file.

As elections draw closer once again, rebellion is manifesting as homicide. It may not seem apparent, with politicians, including notorious suicide bombers and their godfathers decamping to the ruling party in droves. But it’s there, boiling slowly, but surely, to the surface.

The seeds of negligence that Buhari sowed when he abandoned the party after his election, paving the way for the leadership struggle at the National Assembly, and the alienation of a number of those who had helped him to come to power, have yielded a harvest of ward congress crises.

Like a delinquent athlete, the APC barely exercised its muscles three years after taking power. No introspection, no convention, no engagement. Nothing.

The party became so run down that it could not even replace dead light bulbs in its national headquarters. There was nothing to show that it was in any way fundamentally different from the power-grabbing machine that its predecessor was.

Yet, in spite of its waywardness, it is staging its own local congress Olympics and hoping for a medal haul.

There’s the argument that Buhari should be excused on health grounds. That his sponsors didn’t quite know that they had bought a pig in a poke, and that his effectiveness has been depleted after he spent, all together, nearly five months of his first three years in office trying to deal with his health.

Others have said health or not, it’s his style, the essential Buhari: He’s a master of the high horse, riding in the spotlight while others do the dirty work for him.

Well, politics is a messy thing. If Buhari still had any illusion, last weekend’s congresses should have shown him that the road to 2019 would be a turbulent one, even within his own fold.

It may appear unfair to hold Buhari responsible for the large-scale failure of the APC ward congresses but the failure wasn’t an event: It didn’t just happen. It is the sum total of a series of mishaps that started three years ago when he failed to provide the leadership that might have sealed the cracks in the fragile alliance.

When that didn’t happen, post-election animosities and injuries became festering sores. Party stalwarts who waited in vain for Buhari to act – or even pretend to be interesting in acting – began to instigate their base and sympathisers, from the ward level up, against the party. Others simply switched off. The shambolic ward congresses were inevitable.

True, Buhari appears to have roused himself from the sleep of political death. The eleventh-hour man that he is, never to be hurried and never in a hurry, he asked one of the party’s national leaders, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to help reconcile the warring factions in a war which he, Buhari, instigated either by default, negligence or both.

The ward congresses, with the ricochet of missiles in the stalled Ekiti governorship primaries, are a tale of just how far the reconciliation has progressed. Who could have believed that the day would come when PDP will mock APC about doing the right thing and Governor Ayodele Fayose’s PDP in Ekiti would show the APC how to conduct primaries?

Understandably, the PDP has capitalised on the self-inflicted blunders of the ruling party, but common sense suggests that the talk of APC’s death is slightly exaggerated.

The ultimatum by nPDP with its laundry list of demands is meaningless because the group has disintegrated and its influence has waned over time.

The remnant of the nPDP is split between bigwigs like Rabiu Kwankwaso and co who have one leg out the door and remainers like Rotimi Amaechi, who have no where to go.

The nPDP’s complaint, addressed to a sitting duck chairman and reported by The Cable, is only to provide temporary oxygen for Bukola Saraki, Danjuma Goje and others who are still testing the waters.

APC still has a chance to recover from its convulsion, even though its scars would remain. My guess, in fact, is that despite its hubris, it remains the party to beat in the next election, as the nectar of power continues to draw hordes into its fold.

But there’s a candle on the window. Even though Buhari’s aloofness, the government’s incompetence and the internal war have left the party severely damaged, they may yet produce an opportunity. That is for parties and politicians not obsessed by 2019.

With a serious, sustained political challenge, the APC, in its current form, will not last the distance it took to remove the PDP from power.

But will the discontent produce strategic thinking and enough stamina in our politicians?

IBEJII: Discover The Mysterious Retro Afro Artiste

Featured Image

In a saturated music industry, where lewd lyrics and cacophony is norm, a mysterious artiste with a unique style of music continues to rise up the ladder of reckoning and regard.

Ibejii, daring and compelling, entered the Nigerian music arena some two years ago, with his release of the critically-acclaimed single, Ayanfe, a love song that speaks chivalry and love in its purest form: “Ayanfe is my first gift to the world; a world of pure souls, lovers of edifying verse, of chivalry and character – a beautiful, beautiful place. I welcome lovers of great sound to join me on this journey of self-discovery – a journey that embraces hope and promise, but also self-doubt and diffidence,” he said.

The spotlight however shone brighter on the mysterious artiste when in August, 2017 he dropped two projects simultaneously.

Ibejii

GreenWhiteDope 001 and GreenWhite Dope 002 were launched as a twin project, reflecting Ibejii’s roots as a twin, a fact that is believed to carry mystery and exceptionalism in the Yoruba culture of his heritage.  As a twin, Ibejii shares the cultural advantage of possessing and being protected by supernatural powers, a factor that presumably shapes the extraordinary talent of this multifaceted personality, whose fuller journey is yet to be told:

“My journey is a subtle blend of the Taiye and the Kehinde, the seen and the undisclosed, the old and the new, African vibes and international sounds.”

For Ibejii, music “gives the opportunity to explore different themes and ideas. It enables one to push messages through a platform that is universal; that works.”

As is clear from his lyrics, music for Ibejii is first about good messaging but also about sweet melody.  He regales his audience through the art of skillful storytelling embellished with folklore, metaphor and vernacular. He explores, traditional Yoruba folk, jazz, dance, RnB, Juju among other genres. His diversity of genre is hinged on his belief that human moods vary. His music which is transcendent speaks to diverse topical issues, from love to hope, migration politics to leadership, etc.

Like many who appreciate and purvey great music, Ibejii was born into a home that enjoyed a rich mix of tunes from the 60s, 70s and 80s, fanning the embers of interest in good music and creativity.

Born in London, UK, Ibejii’s nation of birth and early nurture works a dynamic duo with his nation of origin, influencing his unique blend of African and international motifs in the creation of his music. Ibejii’s music is cross-cultural, cross-continental, and truly delights music lovers from diverse continents.

Ibejii is sophisticated, thoughtful, idealistic, dynamic and inquisitive; attributes that endear him to his core fans.  He is renowned for his navy-blue tunic, Afros and sometimes, his fedora hat; an ensemble that speaks ‘style’, ‘timeless’, ‘daring’ and ‘openness’.

Ibejii

In December 2017, Ibejii held a huge concert audience spellbound with his sterling performance as guest artiste at the Brymo Concert at Terra Kulture Arena, Lagos. He is set to hold his maiden headline concert, ‘The Ibejii Live Experience’, at the African Arts Foundation (AAF), Victoria Island, Lagos, on Tuesday, 29th May, 2018.

With tickets flying off the shelf, lovers of great music are set for a great evening – which, as we hear it, is prelude to the launch of Ibejii’s third album.

NDLEA Nabs 17 Persons In Ilorin With 12 Cartons Of Codeine, Other Hard Drugs

Featured Image

The Kwara State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), has arrested 17 suspects in different parts of the state while trying to smuggle codeine cough syrup to other destinations for sale.

Last week, the federal government of Nigeria had announced a ban on the production and import of cough syrup containing codeine.

Codeine Ban: NAFDAC Wields Big Stick On Emzor, 2 Others

This was after a BBC documentary on abuse of codeine-based cough syrups, especially in northern part of Nigeria.

Speaking with newsmen on Thursday in Ilorin, the state Commander of the NDLEA, Mr Onah Ogilegwu, said his men arrested 13 suspects with assorted drugs in different locations across the state.

How Codeine Is Creating A Generation Of Addicts In Nigeria

He said: “Thirteen suspects were arrested at various locations by the Air Force authority in Ilorin and transferred to the command with assorted hard drugs.”

Ogilegwu stated that the Command on Saturday nabbed another two suspects with 12 cartons of codeine containing 600 bottles of the product.

“The two suspects were in the taxi trying to travel down north with the drug but my men intercepted their car and while checking they discovered 12 cartons of codeine.”

“They confessed that they are traveling to Kaduna with the drugs to deliver them to a man.”

“They said that they have been involved and making money from the business for a very long time.”

He added that on Tuesday another two suspects were arrested along Tanke area, Ilorin, by personnel of the agency.

“Surveillance was placed in the area following a tip-off. Men of the command swung into action and the two suspects arrested are presently undergoing investigation,” he explained.

Ogilegwu charged all drug sellers and producers to abide by directives to submit banned substances in order to receive commendation from the command, adding that failure to do so will lead to an arrest of culprits.

Codeine Ban: Lagos Unveils New Strategy To Tackle Drug Abuse

He added that other assorted drugs like Tramadol should be placed on poison box by the pharmacists and should be sold strictly on medical doctor’s recommendation.

“Any other vendor found selling drugs aside licensed pharmacists will face the wrath of the law when arrested,” he warned.

He also urged the Federal Government to fast-track a bill to ban the production, sales, and distribution of the drugs.

France 2018: FIFA Snubs Nigerian Referees Again For U-20 Women’s World Cup

Featured Image

Nigerian referees have once again failed to make the shortlist for the 2018 FIFA U20 women’s World Cup in France.

On Wednesday, the FIFA Referees Committee announced the selection of 15 referees and 30 assistant referees to officiate at the upcoming FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup France 2018 with no Nigerian match official making the shortlist.

According to a statement it issued on its official website, six match officials from Africa will officiate in the tournament to be held in France from 5 to 24 August.

The statement also said: “The selection criteria for the match officials from 21 different countries was based on their experience in their respective association and confederation competitions, as well as their levels of fitness and ability to read the game. Those selected for the tournament in Brittany this summer will also be candidates to officiate at the FIFA Women’s World Cup France 2019™.”

“The four official host cities for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup France 2018 are located across Brittany: Concarneau (Stade Guy Piriou), Dinan/Léhon (Stade du Clos Gastel in Léhon), Saint-Malo (Stade de Marville) and Vannes (Stade de la Rabine). Vannes will host the opening match of the competition on 5 August, as well as the final on 24 August.”

The African referees are Lidya Tafesse Abebe of Ethiopia and Zambian Gladys Lengwe.

Bernadetta Kwimbira (Malawi), Mary Njoroge (Kenya), Lidwine Rakotozafinoro (Madagascar) and Victoire Queency (Mauritius) are the assistant referees.

FIFA had earlier in March omitted Nigerian referees and assistant referees from the selected 36 referees and 63 assistant referees for the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia.

Meanwhile, Ghana and Nigeria are the two African nations that qualified for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.

BREAKING: QPR Sack Manager Ian Holloway With Immediate Effect

Featured Image

Queens Park Rangers (QPR) have announced the sack of its manager Ian Holloway with immediate effect with reports claiming that former England boss Steve McClaren is favourite to take over at Loftus Road.

The decision comes after Holloway met QPR owner Tony Fernandes for talks following their 16th place finish in the Championship.

Holloway returned to Loftus Road for his second stint as manager in November 2016. During his time at the club, he oversaw 80 games, winning 26, drawing 14 and losing 40.

CEO Lee Hoos said: “On behalf of the Board we are hugely grateful to Ian for his incredible efforts during his time with us.

“He joined us at a critical stage as we looked to reduce the wage bill, bring in younger talent and remain competitive on the pitch at the same time.

“That is no easy task and it was down to his desire, love for the club and hard work that he achieved those goals.

“However, we are now looking to take the next step as we continue to work through what is a vital period of transition for the football club.”

McClaren, who last worked as an adviser at Israeli said Maccabi Tel Aviv, is the favourite to replace Holloway.

The 57-year-old previously worked at QPR as part of Harry Redknapp’s backroom team in 2013.

A QPR statement said an announcement regarding Holloway’s replacement “will be made in due course.”

Wayne Rooney: Ex-Man United Captain ‘Agrees To Join MLS Side DC United’

Featured Image

There are very strong indications that former England and Manchester United captain, Wayne Rooney, will be playing in America after agreeing a ‘deal in principle’ that could see him leave Everton for Major League Soccer side DC United this summer in a £12.5m deal.

The BBC claims Rooney’s representatives have been in the United States to discuss the finer details of a move away from the Premier League while Sky Sports adds that this move has been in the works for as long as seven weeks.

Nothing has been signed yet and uncertainty over Everton boss Sam Allardyce’s position means the forward, 32, could stay at Goodison Park.

Rooney re-joined Everton in July 2017.

He spent 13 seasons at Manchester United after signing from Everton as an 18-year-old, becoming their record goalscorer and winning five Premier League titles and the Champions League.

Rooney is also England’s all-time top goalscorer, having netted 53 goals for his country in 119 games.

It is understood Rooney has been offered a contract until the end of the 2020 MLS season. The US transfer window does not open until July.

Rooney’s proposed move will reportedly be confirmed on 10 July, when the MLS mid-season transfer window opens.

A number of MLS franchises held talks with Rooney’s agent Paul Stretford more than a year ago, before the forward had agreed to rejoin Everton for the 2017/18 Premier League season.

DC sit at the bottom of the MLS table with just one win in their last seven games.

HIV/AIDS Survey: US Gives Nigeria N32 Billion

Featured Image

The United States Government on Thursday, May 10, donated the sum of $90m (N32bn) to Nigeria for the HIV/AIDS survey that will take place across the country starting from June.

This disclosure was made by the Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Federal Ministry of Health, the National Agency for the Control of AIDS and the United States Government in Abuja today.

The survey, which has been tagged, ‘Nigeria AIDS Indicators and Impact Survey,’ will have a sample size of 170,000 people and is expected to last for about six months.

The exercise, which is the largest survey of HIV/AIDS in the world, will take place across the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory.

Adewole said the American government had directly supported the survey with about $90m and, indirectly, through other partners.

His words: “The resources for the survey are largely from the US government. Directly, they are giving us about $90m; and indirectly, they are working with other partners to ensure the success of the survey.”

“The survey will put behind us the concept of making guess work in terms of burden of HIV disease in Nigeria.

“We do not know how many people are infected; so, this study will enable us get a precise number.

“This survey is not only about HIV, but about Hepatitis B and C.

“This survey will also help us to drive forward the agenda to rid Nigeria of Hepatitis C. As you know, Hepatitis C now has a cure.

“Also, people who test positive will be placed on treatment, as having HIV is not the end of the world.”

Ex-Osun Governor Oyinlola Resigns As NIMC Chairman

Featured Image

Olagunsoye Oyinlola, a former governor of Osun, has resigned his appointment as the chairman of National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).

Mr Oyinlola, in a resignation letter dated May 9, and addressed to President Muhammadu Buhari, said he resigned his appointment to attend to a greater political engagement.

The letter, which was signed by Mr Oyinlola in Osogbo and sighted by NAN on Thursday reads:

“Sir, I write to resign my appointment as the chairman of National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) with effect from today, 9th May, 2018.

“Your Excellency, I must put on record my very deep sense of appreciation for the special privilege and consideration you gave me to serve our fatherland in that capacity.

“As I stated in my appreciation letter to you shortly after the appointment, the offer was a clear call to service.

“I gave the job the dedication it deserved and would have loved to continue but I regret to inform Your Excellency that I have a new, greater political engagement that will make that difficult and even impolitic.

“Sir, as one of my bosses in the army, I believe you would understand my stand given recent political developments.

“The training I got as a decorated officer and gentleman precluded me from engaging in any act that could amount to disloyalty and conflict of interest.

“I am moving on to chart a new course in my politics outside the ruling party and this thus, demands my dropping the NIMC chairmanship.

“I thank you, sir, once again for the great honour and confidence reposed in me.

“However, there is time to take a job and another time to leave it and move on.

“For me, the time to work on something else in the interest and service of our people is now.

“I wish Your Excellency goodluck while praying that you will finish well and strong in the service of our country.”

The Buhari-led government had appointed Mr Oyinlola as NIMC Chairman in September 2017.

9 Killed In Fresh Attack On Taraba Community

Featured Image

The Taraba State Police Command on Wednesday, May 10, confirmed the death of nine persons in early morning attacks on Tutuwa community in Ussa Local Government Area of the State.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, David Misal, told newsmen that a yet-to-be identified armed militia must have carried out the deadly attack.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Mr Misal said Aliyu Tafida, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) of the command, and heads of other security agencies in the state had already moved in to assess the situation.

Rimansikwe Karma, the Chairman of Ussa Local Government Council, while also confirming the attack to newsmen, added that three people were injured.

Mr Karma said that the attackers rounded up the village at about 5 a.m. and launched the attack when members of the community were going for early morning prayers.

His words: “Every Wednesday morning, the community conducts mid-week service and most of them were on their way, when the armed militia attacked them.

“I Owe You No Apologies” – Police IG Idris Replies Senate

Featured Image

The Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, has replied the Senate over a resolution the lawmakers made due to his non-appearance before the upper chamber, saying he owed them no apologies.

According to the police chief, he did not have to appear before the lawmakers, noting that a senior police officer of the rank of Deputy Inspector-General or an Assistant Inspector-General could act on his behalf in an official capacity at any function.

Police IG Snubs Senate The Third Time | Lawmakers Declare Him ‘Enemy Of Democracy’

This, he added, is in consonance with Sections 7(1),312(1), 313(2) of the Police Act, a statement on Wednesday in Abuja by the force spokesman, Jimoh Moshood stated.

In the statement, the IG explained that Senator Dino Melaye was certified fit to stand trial by doctors at the National Hospital before he was arraigned before Chief Magistrate Courts in Wuse, Abuja and Lokoja.

The police described the Senate resolution against Idris as “a deliberate blackmail, witch-hunting with mischievous motives to hand-twist the IGP to pervert the end of justice”  in a felonious and serious offenses of criminal conspiracy and unlawful possession of prohibited firearms for which Senator Dino Melaye was allegedly indicted by two principal suspects, Kabiru Seidu aka Osama and Nuhu Salisu aka Small.

The statement added, “The IG and the Nigeria Police Force will not be deterred by blackmail from any individual or group no matter how highly placed from the enforcement of Law and Order and ensuring that the Rule of Law prevails.

“The Nigeria Police Force, therefore, owes no apology to any individual or groups in its effort to ensure the preservation of law and order, supremacy of the law of the land, and make sure that all Nigerians are subject to the same law, no matter what their position is in the society.”

The police spokesman asked the public to disregard the resolution of the Senate on Idris which he said was “mischievously aimed at casting aspersions on the hard-earned integrity of the IG and the Nigeria Police Force.”

He said, “The Nigeria Police Force as a law-abiding organization will continue to hold the Senate in high esteem but wishes to impress on the Senate not to harbour criminal elements among its fold or condone criminality.”

“The Force will not be intimidated by any individual, groups or institution, constituent or otherwise to abdicate from its constitutional responsibilities of protection of lives and property and due enforcement of the rule of law, and law and order across the country.”

Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane And Roberto Firmino Are Becoming Selfish – Jermaine Jenas

Featured Image

Jermaine Jenas has criticised Liverpool attacking trio Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino for becoming too “selfish”.

Jurgen Klopp’s front three have scored 89 goals between them this season, having lead their team to the Champions League final against Real Madrid.

However, two consecutive losses against Roma and Chelsea has made Jenas question the Merseyside forward line.

“Mohamed Salah did not look that interested against Chelsea, which was odd, but I was more concerned with the way Liverpool’s entire front three played at the Stadio Olimpico,” Jenas wrote in a BBC article.

“I saw something in the second leg which I have not seen all season, which was Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane being selfish for the first time. Usually, when they counter-attack, all three of them are trying to find each other and the best route to goal. Yes Salah has scored the majority, but they have been sharing the goals out, which is one of the reason things have worked so well. This time, it seemed like it was suddenly every man for himself at the top end of the pitch – it was like they did not want to pass to each other anymore. It was almost as if they had looked at the records books about who had scored what in the Champions League and were thinking ‘I want to be the man who scores the most’.

“People have been talking about this Liverpool attack as being among the best front threes we have seen in European competition, but that is on the basis of them playing together as a unit. Yes, it is just one game where that did not happen but it has happened this week, and it was followed by another game against Chelsea where they did not link up as well as usual. I don’t think it is possible for their players to get that game out of their mind, because making it there was such a huge achievement for them.

“Every single member of their squad is going to want to play in Kiev, and they have also had a situation where one of their star players has just suffered a major injury. I am sure some of them looked at what happened to Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and thought ‘I don’t want that to be me’. As a player the worst thing you can do is look at a big game in isolation when it is one or two matches away and think ‘should I give 100% this weekend, because I might pick up an injury and miss it?’ If you do that, you inevitably play badly which sends you down a whole different road.”

Former West Ham Scout Tony Henry Apologises For Comments About African Players

Featured Image

Former West Ham head of recruitment Tony Henry has apologised for comments he made about African players in February.

Tony Henry was sacked by the Premier League club after stating that African footballers “can sometimes have a bad attitude”.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Henry apologised for his actions and denied allegations that he is a ‘racist’.

“I was wrong for what I said. I’m not trying to get out of this. I’ve been charged by the FA. This is not me saying ‘what I said was right’. It was wrong, and I totally apologise. I just want to say that I’m sorry. I want to apologise most to the African players, the players of African descent, but also everybody because I feel I’ve let them down. It was never, ever meant to be racist in any way. The reason we said we didn’t want any more Africans was because we already had three. The day before we’d had four, but one of them left.

“I just felt that, as a head of recruitment, I look ahead down the line and I thought that, in 12 months’ time, it’s the African Nations Cup. If we had four African players, come the African Nations Cup, we are going to lose them in January and February, and we could struggle with that. Any team struggles when they lose four players. I just felt that it would have been too many for us. But also, as well, we brought a new manager in and we weren’t in a good position. We needed to get some points, get some wins, and the Premier League is a tough league.

“New players coming in have to hit the ground running, and what we said was we would have preferred, if possible, Premier League-based players, who could come in and get straight into it. But that never always works out and, in the end, we didn’t take any players. We took Jordan Hugill in the end, (and) we took Joao Mario, who is a top player. But again that made it, for me, even more important that we could bring in a couple of Premier League players to help out.

“West Ham is in no way a racist club. They are one of the most diverse clubs around. It was nothing to do with that and if you look at the players that have come into West Ham over the last eight or nine years there has been a lot of players of African descent. I am not a racist in any way. I have never been accused of racism in my life – never. I honestly think if you went down to West Ham and spoke to staff, management, players, I would think – 100 percent – they would say ‘Tony Henry is not a racist’.”

Henry was the chief scout for West Ham for four years, before his contract was terminated on February 2.

Antoine Griezmann Would Be A Bargain At €100m – Filipe Luis

Featured Image

Filipe Luis believes that Antoine Griezmann would be a bargain if he is snapped up for his buyout clause of €100 million in July.

Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu and striker Luis Suarez have spoken openly about the club’s interest in Griezmann in recent days, leading Atletico chief executive Miguel Angel Gil Marin to angrily tell Barca that “enough is enough.”

But the transfer saga was the main topic of conversation at Atletico’s media open day for the Europa League final in Lyon, though Luis insists that speculation over the striker’s future will not be a distraction ahead of the game against Marseille next Wednesday.

“Griezmann is cheap, for sure, at €100m in this market,” Filipe told a news conference at the Wanda Metropolitano. “He is even cheaper if he plays a good final. That is the reality, but neither Griezmann, nor the rest of us, are thinking about this. After the final yes, but not before.

“We all want to win and it has no effect. We are delighted to work with him, but we are not just Griezmann, many players have worked hard to make this final. Without doubt he has been our most decisive player this season, so we want him to stay. But what happens afterwards is something completely away from what happens this week.”

Antoine Griezmann has hit 27 goals and 14 assists in 42 games across all competitions for Atletico this season

Dani Alves Suffers Major Injury Blow Ahead Of 2018 FIFA World Cup

Featured Image

PSH right-back Dani Alves will be sidelined by a knee injury for at least three weeks and will face a race against time to represent Brazil at the World Cup.

Dani Alves was injured in the 80th minute of Tuesday’s Coupe de France final win over Les Herbiers and replaced six minutes later, but he was able to pose with his teammates for the photograph with the trophy after the match.

Dani Alves is expected to need up to three weeks before a decision can be made over surgery.

That will leave Alves just two and a half weeks to get back to full fitness ahead of Brazil’s first game in Russia, against Switzerland on June 17.

Brazil coach Tite will name his World Cup squad on Monday, with Alves still expected to feature — at least initially — but his actual involvement is now uncertain.

“Following Daniel Alves’ right knee injury, which occurred yesterday during the French Cup final, the tests performed today showed a high detachment of the anterior cruciate ligament with posterolateral sprain,” the statement said. “His condition requires a minimum of three weeks of care before re-evaluation. “

PSG later issued an official injury update, confirming the accuracy of the statement made by Alves’ spokesman.

Speaking after to Coupe de France final, Alves’ club and international teammate Marquinhos said: “I didn’t ask [how he was] because we were in the euphoria of winning the title. Once we rest a little, we shall see how he is, but I saw him walking well.”

Atletico Madrid’s Experience Will Help In Europa League Final – Diego Simeone

Featured Image

Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone says his team’s good and bad experience in recent finals should be a big positive ahead of next Wednesday’s Europa League decider against Marseille.

Diego Simeone has now guided Atletico Madrid to four major finals [not including Supercups] during his six-plus years in charge — with his team having won the 2012 Europa League against Athletic Bilbao and 2013 Copa del Rey against neighbours Real Madrid, but losing to their neighbours Real in the 2014 and 2016 Champions League finals.

The Argentine coach told reporters at the official media day ahead of next week’s final that all of these had been learning experiences, and his team now knew the difference between being on the winning or losing side on the final whistle.

“I always say that having the opportunity to play in finals give you the experience of things you have lived through,” Simeone said. “You take positives and negatives away, but the important thing is you were there. You know what it is like when you win, when you lose…”

Finishing what had been such a challenging season with a trophy would be extra special, the former rojiblanco player suggested.

“Not being able to sign anyone at the start of the season, then two arriving and five leaving [in the winter window], exiting the Champions League, now we are in the Europa League final, second in la Liga,” Simeone said. “It is a good season in terms of work, and winning a trophy would bring us to a higher place.

“But then you look at the day-to-day work, and youngsters who have made a step up — Thomas [Partey], Lucas [Hernandez] and [Angel] Correa. The consistency of Koke, Saul’s improvement, another year for Gabi, [Antoine] Griezmann, [Diego] Godin, [Jan] Oblak.

“We know we have done things that were not the best, but always looking for the best for the club. Six years ago I said I wanted a team that annoyed people, and I still want to be even more annoying….”
