Another 2 Nigerians killed in South Africa

Featured Image

The death toll of Nigerians killed in South Africa has continued to climb with two young Nigerians being the latest victims.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the latest killing brings the number of Nigerians killed in the former apartheid enclave since February 2016 to 118.

Up to 800,000 Nigerians, mostly young people, reside in South Africa, according to unofficial estimates.

The Publicity Secretary of the Nigeria Union in South Africa, Habib Miller, told NAN in a telephone interview that two additional Nigerians were killed in South Africa in the past eight days.

Mr Miller, who spoke with NAN from Pretoria, South Africa, identified the latest victims as Francis Ochuba, a native of Ngodo community in the Umnneochi Local Government Area of Abia.

He named the other victim as Chidi Ibebuike, a native of Uturu in the Isikwuato Local Government Area also in Abia.

“Ochuba, a property owner, was shot dead alongside his estate agent, a female South African on May 5. They were shot dead as they visited the tenant occupying Ochuba’s house to collect rent.

“The incident occurred in Central Johannesburg, while Ibebuike was shot dead at the entrance to his house at Hazyview in Mpumalanga on May 13.

“Ibebuike’s car was subsequently, snatched by yet to be identified gunmen.

“The chairman of the Nigeria Union in Mpumalanga Province, Mr Amadi in company of other compatriots, have reported the incident to the South African police authorities and investigation is underway.”

Mr Miller said the latest killings came on the heels of the cold-blooded murder of ThankGod Okoro, a native of Ogbaku in the Agwu Local Government Area of Enugu State on April 9 and that of Clement Nwaogu, a native of Njikoka in Anambra on April 22.

He recalled that Okoro was reportedly shot dead by a member of the South African Police Flying Squad at Florida in Johannesburg while Nwaogu was burnt alive by a mob in Rustenburg in the North West Province.

The spokesman said that a violent group in Rustenburg had earlier given Nigerians notice to vacate the area or get killed.

He said that since the order was issued, there had been numerous cases of Nigerians being kidnapped with ransom paid to their abductors.

“The incessant looting and killings in the area, prompted 14 Nigerians to protest the injustice and the lack of police protection from the South African Police.

“The 14 Nigerians were attested and had been detained since January 21 in Rustenburg.

“The extra-judicial killing of Nigerians in South Africa is however, a stark contrast to the general goodwill and protection South Africans and their businesses enjoy in Nigeria.

“There have been no record of looting of South African businesses in Nigeria.

“While South African companies transfer billions of dollars in profit made from doing business in Nigeria, Nigerians in South Africa are sending body bags of murdered breadwinners back home to Nigeria to dejected families,” Mr Miller said.

Cult War: 16 Persons Feared Killed In Delta Communities

Featured Image

No less than 16 members of different cult groups have been reported killed with scores injured in the last one week in the ongoing cult war in major cities and towns, especially in the remote settlements in Delta State.

According to security sources, the areas mostly affected were Udu, Enerhen, Sapele, Ughelli, Ozoro and Oghara where incidences of cultism were recorded on daily basis.

It was gathered that for instance, in Udu Local Government Area where cultism was reported to have reached its climax, rival cult members used to be on the trail of one another to various drinking bars and joints perceived to be the home base of their opponents to unleash terror on both members and innocent indigenes of the area.

Daily Sun and ThisDay quoted sources close to the Udu Council of Elders on Tuesday as saying that nine persons have been killed within the last two weeks in series of attacks and reprisal between two rival cult groups in the area.

It was gathered that some major hotels in Udu area now play host to these cult groups and it is from these hotels that the members plot their next strike on their opponent and other counter attacks that had claimed many lives and several injuries.

To checkmate the growing menace, the security source disclosed that a joint police sting operation coordinated from the office of the Warri Area Commander and led by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), B Division, Okumagba Avenue, CSP Anietie Eyoh, led to the arrest of over 36 cult members during a raid on two hotels along the DSC expressway last weekend.

Another raid to the Enerhen community by the same police special task force, it was learnt, also resulted in the arrest of over 15 cult members in some notorious hideouts where the various cult groups converged regularly.

FG Approves Release Of National Stadium, Surulere To Lagos State Government

Featured Image

On Tuesday, the Lagos State Government announced that President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the release of the National Stadium, Surulere, to the state for retrofitting and upgrading to host international sporting tournaments.

Chairman of Lagos State Sports Commission, Kweku Tandoh while speaking at the ongoing annual Ministerial Press Briefing to mark the third anniversary of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode’s administration held at Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre in Alausa said it was gratifying to report that after series of back and forth, action would finally commence next week on paperwork for the formal handover of the facility to the state government.

Chairman, Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC), Mr. Kweku Tandoh (middle), flanked by Commissioner for Information & Strategy, Mr. Kehinde Bamigbetan (right) and Director General, LSSC, Mr. Babatunde Bank-Anthony (left) during the media conference by the Sports Commission, as part of the ongoing Y2018 ministerial press briefing to commemorate the third Year in Office of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre, the Secretariat, Alausa, Ikeja, on Tuesday, May 15, 2018.

When asked why the handover was being delayed, Mr. Tandoh said the approval for the release was given verbally by the President during his visit to Lagos a few weeks ago, while the terms of agreement would now be based not on concession but complete release to the state government.

Giving details, Mr. Tandoh said: “You would recall that the Lagos State Government signified interest in taking over completely the National Stadium and the Governor did not just say it, he actually met with the Minister of Sports and a tour of the facility was carried out.

“One thing later developed and there were signs and signals that the Governor received that they were not actually ready to hand over the Stadium to us rather it seems as if they just wanted a concession agreement where the State Government would spend the money, get it fixed while the Federal Government would still be in place but that is not what Lagos State Government wants.

“So, during the visit of the President to Lagos State few weeks ago, the Governor at the State Dinner was able to grouch the intention again and he mentioned it in his speech to the President and the President verbally gave approval that that was going to be in place.

Just yesterday, the Governor directed that I proceed to Abuja next week to deliver some communications that are necessary to put in place a formal handover of the National Stadium to Lagos State Government. We are grateful that this time they will give it to us on the terms that the Lagos State Government has requested for,” he explained.

Manchester United Cannot Be Satisfied With Second Position – David De Gea

Featured Image

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has said the club must not be satisfied with finishing as Premier League runners-up this season, claiming second place is “not enough”.

Manchester United enjoyed their best league season since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013 this term but still ended 19 points behind champions Manchester City.

De Gea, named United’s player of the year for the fourth time earlier this month, has now urged his team-mates to help end their five-year wait for league title.

“I believe that, for a club like United, even second place is simply not enough,” he told United Review.

“We have to be fighting hard to win something and we have that opportunity next week. You get nothing for coming second or getting close to the league leaders.

“In the end, you always have to be fighting to win something, as that’s what this club and the fans really deserve and so it’s just that – second place is not enough.”

Liverpool Defender Trent Alexander-Arnold Can’t Wait To Face Cristiano Ronaldo In The Champions League Final

Featured Image

Liverpool full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold has said that he is looking forward to coming up against Cristiano Ronaldo in next weekend’s Champions League final.

Trent Alexander-Arnold has established himself as Liverpool’s first-choice right-back following a breakthrough campaign at Anfield, and he will look to cap that with victory against Real Madrid in Kiev on May 26.

Alexander-Arnold admits that it will be an “honour” to face one of the game’s all-time greats.

“With Ronaldo being one of the greats, probably one of the best players ever, it’s going to be an honour to hopefully play against him. You know a lot about him and the likes of [Lionel] Messi because you watch them on YouTube when you’re growing up, you always watch those type of players,” he told reporters.

“I want to challenge myself and test myself against the best players in the world and there are not many people better than the likes of Ronaldo. It will be a huge test for everyone and hopefully we come out on top. I suppose [I was a fan of his], not when he was playing for Man United though.

“You have to admit he’s an unbelievable player and he’s done exceptional things in the game. The numbers that he does season in, season out are absolutely unbelievable, but come May 26 we’ll be looking to stop him and the rest of Real Madrid. You’ve just got to focus on the game and if he’s a direct opponent you have to see what the strengths and weaknesses are and use them to your advantage.”

Arsenal Backroom Staff Follow Arsene Wenger Out Of The Club

Featured Image

A number of Arsenal’s backroom staff have now followed Arsene Wenger out of the club

Arsene Wenger took charge of his last game at Huddersfield on Sunday as the curtain came down on a 22-year spell at the helm.

It’s understood the Gunners hierarchy have also acted to move on some of the coaching staff that worked alongside the 68-year-old.

Boro Primorac, a long-term coach and friend of Wenger, was always likely to leave and, as the outgoing manager prepares to clear his office later this week, a number of other backroom staff have also been relieved of their duties.

Colin Lewin, head of the club’s medical department, has been at the club a year longer than Wenger but will also be departing – as well as coaches Neil Banfield, Gerry Peyton and Tony Colbert, with Paul Johnson leaving his post as equipment manager.

As things stand it appears Wenger’s assistant Steve Bould and Jens Lehmann, recruited to the coaching staff just last summer, will remain under the new manager.

The hunt for Wenger’s successor continues, with Mikel Arteta now favourite to return to the club he served as a player between 2011 and 2016.

Mikel Arteta retired two years ago to join Pep Guardiola’s coaching team at Manchester City and helped deliver the Premier League title to the Etihad Stadium this season.

Roberto Mancini Ready To Give Mario Balotelli Italy Recall

Featured Image

Italy’s new coach Roberto Mancini says he will talk to long-excluded striker Mario Balotelli about a possible return to the national team.

Speaking at his presentation in Florence on Tuesday, Mancini says “Mario is an Italian player. We’ll definitely talk. He’s one of those players we should take a new look at.”

We want to see him play the way he did at the European Championship (in 2012),” he said.

Balotelli has not played for Italy since the 2014 World Cup, but he featured under Mancini at both Inter Milan and Manchester City.

Mancini is replacing Gian Piero Ventura, who was fired in November after the Azzurri failed to qualify for the World Cup for the first time in six decades.

From 2012 till Date: Six Times Seyi Shay Has Electrocuted Us With Her Music

Featured Image

With the release of Seyi Shay’s brilliant brand new E.P., ‘Electric Package’, which can be likened to a clear case of turning one’s lemon into lemonades, we have decided to take a trip down memory lane and revisit all the many times before that Ms. Shay has blown us away with her dazzling vocals and incredulous hooks.

While there are more than a handful of Seyi songs that we adore, here are the top six.

  1. Irawo (feat. Vector) – It seems like it was just yesterday when Seyi Shay made her way into our music libraries with Irawo. While the song was already a certified jam, the remix Vector made the song pop even more. It’s been a minute but the song is still makes a whole lot of sense.

  1. “Murda” (featuring Patoranking and Shaydee) – Probably one of Seyi’s most popular collaboration till date, ‘Murda’ still stands out because of its melodious chorus and slick production. Seyi, Pato, and Shaydee did the track an insane amount of justice and we are still here for it, years later.

  1. “Right Now” – Seyi shook up the pop scene in 2015 when she dropped the irresistibly catchy pop tune that is ‘Right Now’. With a blend of seamless vocals and wavy production, ‘Right Now’ was a super mega smash and there was no denying it.

  1. “In Love” ( Wizkid featuring Seyi Shay) – Seyi’s Starboy collaboration dropped at a pivotal time in the career of the two pop stars. They were leaving the group chat of ‘up and coming’ artistes and were about to start officially rolling with the big dogs. From the music to the accompanying visuals, ‘Crazy’ was a thrill for fans of the two artistes.

  1. Yolo Yolo – Many of us had never heard of ‘Afro-salsa’ up until Seyi Shay dropped the groovy ‘Yolo Yolo’. It sounded different, it felt like the pioneer of a new wave and we were all here for it. It’s still one of the daring Nigeria pop tunes to drop in recent history and we have none other than the Electric Package herself to thank for it.

  1. Lastly is her most recent single – Alele which features vocal contributions from urban high life merchant – Flavour. Alele (interpreted as “Run”) is the lead song on her just released 6-track Electric Package EP and an instant call to excitement. Seyi Shay’s unignorable musical dexterity and Flavours smooth range all came together to make it a well-seasoned offering.

Tottenham Need To Start Winning Trophies – Christian Eriksen

Featured Image

Christian Eriksen has admitted that Tottenham need to start winning trophies in order to mark their progress under Mauricio Pochettino.

Tottenham have qualified for the Champions League in each of the past three seasons despite operating with a significantly smaller budget than many of their direct Premier League rivals, but they have not won any silverware since lifting the League Cup in 2008.

Speculation has begun to grow over the future of Pochettino following another trophyless campaign, but Eriksen believes that they are ready to make the next step forward.

“We’ve been very stable. People should look at the stabilisation of the team and our achievements in the Premier League,” the Denmark international told the Evening Standard.

“The next step is, of course, to finish the semis and try to get through [to a final]. I think if we do what we did against all the teams in the Champions League again, we have a chance of going even further.

“I think we’ve shown in the Champions League we have something we can take with us. We’re over the hill, we tried it. Now we want to win something, we want to go further. Mentally that’s a big step we need to go forward.”

Eden Hazard Is The Best Player In The Premier League – Ander Herrera

Featured Image

Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera believes Chelsea’s Eden Hazard as the best player in the Premier League.

Eden Hazard scored 12 goals and assisted four more in the top flight this season, but he was some way behind the likes of Mohamed Salah and Kevin De Bruyne in the running for the individual awards, with Salah claiming the PFA and FWA Player of the Year gongs in addition to the Golden Boot.

However, Herrera believes that Hazard is still the league’s most talented player, and also heaped praise on the ability of teammate David de Gea.

“For me, Hazard is the best player in the league. In my opinion he’s the best player in the league, I’ve said that since my first day here,” Herrera told The Big Interview with Graham Hunter.

“For me, David is the best [goalkeeper] by far. I think he has something that comes from god. God chose him in the goal and god chose [Lionel] Messi on the pitch. You cannot train what he did against Liverpool. You cannot train what he did against Kun Aguero when he was two metres in front of him and he put the hand out, you cannot train it.

“You cannot train when he receives the ball from the left defender and he passes the ball to Antonio Valencia perfect. You can see when he receives the ball he knows always what to do. He has some special abilities that I think he hasn’t trained them, because you cannot train them, you just have them.”

Joe Hart Left Out Of England’s World Cup Squad By Manager Gareth Southgate

Featured Image

Joe Hart has been told he will not be part of England’s 23-man squad heading to the World Cup in Russia.

England coach Gareth Southgate will announce his squad on Wednesday, but we understand he has decided against taking Joe Hart as his third choice goalkeeper behind Stoke City’s Jack Butland and Everton’s Jordan Pickford.

The Manchester City goalkeeper, who has spent the season on loan at West Ham, was told on Monday in a phone-call from Southgate that he would not be travelling to a fifth major finals despite the national manager having considered the 31-year-old his first-choice for much of his tenure.

Hart recently won his 75th and most recent cap against Brazil in November

Burnley’s Nick Pope, who was called up for the games against the Netherlands and Italy but remains uncapped, is the likeliest to replace Hart in the 23-man squad, which Southgate will reveal on Wednesday. The England manager submitted a provisional 35-man squad to Fifa on Monday.

Swansea’s Alfie Mawson will also not be included in Southgate’s squad for the World Cup after he underwent successful knee surgery on Monday – keeping him out for between six weeks and two months.

#WorldCupWith360nobs: Germany Announce Provisional Squad For The World Cup

Featured Image

Emre Can and 2014 Germany’s World Cup final hero Mario Gotze have been left out of Germany’s preliminary 35-man squad for this summer’s World Cup in Russia.

Emre Can has been a regular for Jurgen Klopp’s side this season and is expected to recover from a back injury in time for the tournament, but there is no place for him in Joachim Low’s squad.

Mario Gotze is another notable omission, with the 25-year-old failing to make the 35-man roster just four years after scoring the winning goal in the World Cup final in Brazil.

However, Mesut Ozil, Jerome Boateng and Manuel Neuer are all included despite concerns over their fitness, with the latter having been sidelined since September.

There are also places for Manchester City duo Ilkay Gundogan and Leroy Sane, while Freiburg’s uncapped Nils Peterson is a surprise inclusion in the 35.

The preliminary squad must be whittled down to just 23 players by June 4.

Provisional Germany World Cup Squad

Goalkeepers: Bernd Leno (Bayer Leverkusen), Manuel Neuer (Bayern Munich), Marc-Andre ter Stegen (Barcelona), Kevin Trapp (Paris Saint-Germain)

Defenders: Jerome Boateng (Bayern Munich), Matthias Ginter (Borussia Monchengladbach), Jonas Hector (FC Cologne), Mats Hummels (Bayern Munich), Joshua Kimmich (Bayern Munich), Marvin Plattenhardt (Hertha Berlin), Antonio Rudiger (Chelsea), Niklas Sule (Bayern Munich), Jonathan Tah (Bayer Leverkusen)

Midfielders: Julian Brandt (Bayer Leverkusen), Julian Draxler (Paris Saint-Germain), Leon Goretzka (Schalke 04), Ilkay Gundogan (Manchester City), Sami Khedira (Juventus), Toni Kroos (Real Madrid), Mesut Ozil (Arsenal), Marco Reus (Borussia Dortmund), Sebastian Rudy (Bayern Munich), Leroy Sane (Manchester City)

Patrick Vieira is on the shortlist to take over at Nantes with Claudio Ranieri poised to leave the club. New York City FC boss Vieira is one of three coaches being lined up by Nantes president Waldemar Kita, with former Bordeaux boss Jocelyn Gourvennec and Standard Liege’s Ricardo Sa Pinto also under consideration. Ranieri is expected to step down after Saturday’s final game of the season against Strasbourg following a poor run in which Nantes have won just two of their last 14 games. (L’Equipe)

Everton have opened talks with Monaco over the possibility of signing defensive midfielder Kevin N’Doram. The 22-year-old made just seven Ligue 1 starts this season and is considering a move away from the Stade Louis II to earn first-team football. Alvaro Morata could be set for a return to Juventus with the club keen to sign the Chelsea striker on a season-long loan with an obligation to make the transfer permanent in 2019. The Spain international played for Juve between 2014 and 2016 before Real Madrid activated their buyback clause. But following his struggles in west London, Juve have been in discussion with Morata’s representatives over a move back to Turin although Chelsea’s asking price is in the region of €60 million. (Gazzetto dello Sport)

Juventus also want to bring Marco Verratti back to Italy as part of their plan to sign at least one top-class midfielder this summer. Ancelotti has already agreed to take over at the Stadio San Paolo should Sarri leave. (Gazzetto dello Sport)

AC Milan have told PSG and Liverpool that Gianluigi Donnarumma will cost them at least €70m. The Rossoneri are prepared to hear offers for the 19-year-old goalkeeper following a season in which his development has stagnated with some high-profile errors. Milan have already agreed to sign Pepe Reina from Napoli on a free transfer as security if PSG or Liverpool meet their world record asking price. (Corriere dello Sport)

Barcelona are stepping up their pursuit of Sevilla defender Clement Lenglet following doubts over Thomas Vermaelen and Yerry Mina’s long-term suitability. The La Liga champions are desperate to add another centre-back this summer as competition for Gerard Pique and Samuel Umtiti. Lenglet, 22, has a buyout clause of €30m and has stalled over renewing his contract in Seville. (Mundo Deportivo)

Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane will have a fully-fit squad to choose from for the Champions League final after Cristiano Ronaldo and right-back Dani Carvajal both recovered from injury. The pair are due back in training this week and may even play a small part in Madrid’s final league fixture of the season against Villarreal this weekend. Ronaldo suffered an ankle sprain in El Clasico against Barcelona on May 6 while Carvajal has been out with a muscle problem since April 25. (Marca)

Andres Iniesta could join former Barcelona and Spain team-mate Xavi in Qatar. One of the Gulf nation’s “biggest clubs” have made the 34-year-old midfielder a substantial offer after an anticipated move to China broke down, although he still has proposals in Australia and Japan. Iniesta will hold fresh talks with the unnamed club this week. (AS/Al Sharq)

Arsenal target Sokratis Papastathopoulos will not be extending his contract at Borussia Dortmund and wants to leave the club. The Greek centre-back, 29, is a free agent next summer and BVB have been keen to tie him down to a new long-term deal.

However, with interest from the Premier League and Serie A, Sokratis is keen on a new challenge, with Arsenal viewing him as a replacement for Laurent Koscielny following the France international’s achilles injury which will keep him out until November. (Kicker)

Eintracht Frankfurt winger Marius Wolf is a summer transfer target of Borussia Dortmund and Red Bull Leipzig. Wolf, 22, only signed a new contract in January but Dortmund are preparing an offer of around €10m which could be matched by Leipzig. Wolf, who only joined Frankfurt from Hannover last summer, scored five goals and notched eight assists in 28 Bundesliga appearances this season. (Bild)

Two Nigerian Students Assault Childhood Friend Over Who Has The Richer Dad

Featured Image

Two wealthy Nigerian students beat up a classmate and childhood friend with a shisha pipe over an argument about whose dad was the richest.

20-year-old Elvis Ilonze and 24-year-old Daniel Oluyemi attacked childhood friend Prince Nnaji in their shared apartment in Brighton, England. Nnaji tried to escape but the two men chased after him and beat him up with a wine bottle on April 7, last year at about 10pm.

They also attacked 23-year-old law student Chiedozie Dibiagwu, who was sat on a chair nearby and witnessed the whole debacle, and pushed Nnaji’s girlfriend, Louanna Rayawa to the ground when she tried to stop the assault. Elvis Ilonze and Daniel Oluyemi were both spared jail after admitting two counts of assault occasioning grievous bodily harm.

Nnaji and Ilonze had known each other from Nigeria, but when Nnaji suggested that he had the richer father Ilonze decided to ‘teach him a lesson’. Elvis Ilonze came to the UK to study a four-year Masters of Engineering degree at the University of Sussex, and is one year away from completing his course while Daniel Oluyemi was training to become an accountant at the same university and is expecting a child in September or October.

Judge Christine Laing QC who handled the case spared the pair jail time, suspending a one-year custodial sentence for 18 months to give them ‘one last chance’.

The judge said:

“Unlike many of the people who pass through the courts you both come from, effectively, backgrounds of privilege. It couldn’t be more childish, effectively an insult on somebody’s parents – who’s got the richer dad – that started this fight.

‘You both appear to be incredibly immature, perhaps as a result of being cosseted in your upbringing.”

She added that both men, though immature, have ‘much to contribute to society’.

‘We Didn’t Collect Money To Reconcile With Tekno’ – Danfo Drivers

Featured Image

Mountain Black of veteran music group popularly known as Danfo Drivers has cleared the air on their reconciliation with Tekno after they called him out for sampling their song “Kpolongo” on his new song “Jogodo”.

According to the Mountain Black they didn’t collect money from Tekno to settle their rift with him.

In a recent interview, Mountain Black said they had forgiven Tekno after paying them a visit in Abuja on Wednesday. But, he quickly noted that they didn’t receive any form of money compensation from him.

His words;

“We didn’t collect any money from Tekno; you can ask him. The deed has been done; we cannot reverse it any longer. He planned to release the video of the song last week.

He asked if he could go ahead and we gave him our permission. But I told him we could do a remix later.”

Mountain Black said they wouldn’t have spoken out angrily if he had treated them well. According to him, they had earlier agreed that they would see at the Eko Hotel in Lagos after the Headies Award but he refused to pick their calls.

“Why would you release a job without telling the owner of the song? When he called that he wanted to see us, I told him we were busy but we should meet at the Headies and he said it was okay.

We were invited for the Headies at the Eko Hotel and he lives very close.

On that day, we called him and he was not picking up. That was why I granted an interview where I said we were looking for Tekno.

“Last week Wednesday, he called that he was coming to see us in Abuja.

So, he came down to Abuja and apologised for what he did. I told him we were not interested in his money but we wanted him to work together with us as a team.”

Naira Weakens Against Dollar

Featured Image

Nigerian currency Naira on Monday, May 14, depreciated against the United States dollar at the parallel market in Lagos.

The local currency lost 1.1 points to exchange at N362.3, weaker than N361.2 posted on Friday, while the Pound Sterling and the Euro closed at N497 and N429, respectively.

At the Bureau De Change (BDC) window, the naira was sold at N362 to the dollar, while the Pound Sterling and the Euro closed at N497 and N429, respectively.

Trading at the investors’ window saw the naira close at N361.57, while it was sold at N305.8, CBN rate.

Currency traders express confidence that the naira would witness better times as the currency- swap deal between Nigeria and China gets underway.

Meanwhile, experts are worried that political spending in the months ahead might affect the stability of the naira.

It is understood that the aggressive liquidity mop up operations conducted by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) last week is expected to persist this week as inflow of N330 billion boost interbank money market liquidity.

In a bid to tackle excess liquidity in the interbank money market, worsened last week by inflow of N290 billion, the apex bank mopped up N454 billion from the market by selling secondary market (Open Market Operations, OMO) treasury bills.

Senate Bows To Court Order On Omo-Agege’s Reinstatement

Featured Image

The leadership of the Senate on Monday night resolved to comply with the judgement of the Federal High Court on the Delta Central senator, Ovie Omo-Agege, who was previously suspended for 90 days.

In a statement issued by its spokesperson, Sabi Abdullahi, the Senate said it has been briefed by its lawyers on last Thursday’s judgment of the Federal High Court in Abuja nullifying its suspension of Omo-Agege, adding that it had resolved not to stop the senator into the chamber.

Justice Nnamdi Dimgba of the court had nullified the suspension of Mr Omo-Agege last week Thursday, saying that the Senate’s decision regarding the suspension, as well as the pattern adopted by the National Assembly, was constitutionally defective.

In the statement issued by Abdullahi, the Senate said it would allow the senator resume in obedience to the court order.

It read: “The Senate leadership has been briefed by our lawyers on last Thursday’s judgement of the Federal High Court, Abuja, on whether the Senate has the legal authority to suspend a member for certain misconduct or not.

“We have equally filed an appeal against the judgement of the court  and a motion for stay of execution of the judgement at the Court of Appeal.

“As an institution that obeys the law and court orders, the Senate has decided that it will comply with the judgement of the Federal High Court and do nothing to stop Senator Ovie Omo-Agege from resuming in his office and at plenary from tomorrow May 15, 2018, pending the determination of the application for stay of execution.

“The Senate has been advised that since the motion for stay of execution of the Thursday (May 10, 2018) judgement shall be heard and possibly determined on Wednesday, May 16, 2018, we shall therefore respect the subsisting High Court judgement and await the appellate court’s decision on the pending motion.”
