Two wealthy Nigerian students beat up a classmate and childhood friend with a shisha pipe over an argument about whose dad was the richest.
20-year-old Elvis Ilonze and 24-year-old Daniel Oluyemi attacked childhood friend Prince Nnaji in their shared apartment in Brighton, England. Nnaji tried to escape but the two men chased after him and beat him up with a wine bottle on April 7, last year at about 10pm.
They also attacked 23-year-old law student Chiedozie Dibiagwu, who was sat on a chair nearby and witnessed the whole debacle, and pushed Nnaji’s girlfriend, Louanna Rayawa to the ground when she tried to stop the assault. Elvis Ilonze and Daniel Oluyemi were both spared jail after admitting two counts of assault occasioning grievous bodily harm.
Nnaji and Ilonze had known each other from Nigeria, but when Nnaji suggested that he had the richer father Ilonze decided to ‘teach him a lesson’. Elvis Ilonze came to the UK to study a four-year Masters of Engineering degree at the University of Sussex, and is one year away from completing his course while Daniel Oluyemi was training to become an accountant at the same university and is expecting a child in September or October.
Judge Christine Laing QC who handled the case spared the pair jail time, suspending a one-year custodial sentence for 18 months to give them ‘one last chance’.
The judge said:
“Unlike many of the people who pass through the courts you both come from, effectively, backgrounds of privilege. It couldn’t be more childish, effectively an insult on somebody’s parents – who’s got the richer dad – that started this fight.
‘You both appear to be incredibly immature, perhaps as a result of being cosseted in your upbringing.”
She added that both men, though immature, have ‘much to contribute to society’.
