It’s Sad My Father Didn’t Live To Witness My Music Success – Mr. Real

Featured Image

Mr Real, “Legbegbe” crooner has revealed in a recent interview with Saturday Beats his journey to stardom and how he stood his grounds against all odds to make a good life from music.

The singer who became a street sensation after his song “Legbegbe” became a hit disclosed that his family members including his father were of the opinion that music is a waste of time for him prior to his breakthrough.

He said,

“I have been doing music for over 10 years now. But you know in life when it is not your time, there is nothing you can do about it. All this while, I have been working and waiting on God for a breakthrough. Once God says it is your time to shine, no man on earth can stop you from shining. Before my song, ‘Legbegbe,’ I was only doing free shows. But it is a different story now.

“There was no time I thought of leaving music despite the pressure I was getting from my family members then. For me, music is part of my existence as a human and there is nothing else I can do better than music. When I was not making money from music and things looked stagnant, my father wanted me to try other things. It was a serious issue at home.

I cannot blame my father because he wanted the best for me; I am his first child. But I insisted that it was music or nothing. It was not easy to stay focused as I got frustrated by my family members. At a time, I stopped visiting family members because they were always advising me to find something better. To them, I was wasting my time and it was high time I tried other things. I felt it was better I stop visiting because I didn’t want to leave music.”

Meanwhile, Mr Real who lost his father last year expressed his regrets at the fact that his father did not live to witness his career success. According to him, his father’s death is the biggest regrets of his life.

“My father is no more; he died last year. I feel bad that he is not alive to see my growth in the music industry, but I am certain he would be happy for me. My mother died years ago too. But I have six younger siblings to look after.

Though my parents are dead, other family members, who wanted me to quit music, can at least see that my consistency has finally paid off. Once you believe in yourself, the sky is your limit and nothing can stop you,” he said.

The IGP That I Knew Was Not An Imbecile

The IGP That I Knew Was Not An Imbecile, By Babafemi Adesina Badejo

The viral video on Ibrahim Idris, the Nigerian inspector-general of Police (IGP), ostensibly portrayed as not being able to read a speech, is of serious concern to Nigeria and beyond. The right question should be why we could entrust a major security apparatus to such a man. This video lends credence to the position coming out of the Nigerian Senate that Ibrahim Idris is not fit to hold such a high office. So, is the video a case of the Yoruba saying on causation/correlation to the effect that: “Aje ke l’ana, omo ku l’eni, tani ko mope Aje ana ni o pa omo je” (the Witch carried yesterday and a child died today, who does not know that the child was killed by the Witch)? Of course, I cannot conclude that the video came out of the Senate or those in support of the institution that is engaged in a power tussle with the IGP.

This piece was written by Babafemi Adesina Badejo. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of

Furthermore, the IGP, in office, has attracted quite a number of controversies, some of which could be said to be of his own making. For instance, I still cannot understand why the president issued him an instruction and he avoided it. Without telling us why he failed to go, his inaction undermines the presidency before the nation. It is definitely not a matter to be privately discussed at Aso Rock and swept away.

TRENDING VIDEO: Reactions As Police IG Idris Struggles To Read A Speech

The Senate inviting him for a hearing and he wanting to be represented is a bit different from his not moving to Benue at the height of the killings in that State on the instruction of the president. We are all aware that he had arrested a number of senators, within the law, to my mind. Only yesterday, the Senate president, who should have been invited for questioning by the IGP for a transparent investigation over his mentioning in the Panama and Paradise papers, was purported to have released a statement to the effect that the police are trying to set him up. And the police went on the defensive, denying that this is the case. We all should rally behind the IGP in upholding the rule of law in his running battles with a bunch of over-paid Nigerians who feel they may be above the law.

However, I want to avoid undertaking an assessment of the IGP in the performance of his duties and, in particular, as it affects the union being formed against him at the Senate and his partially rising up to the occasion in bringing crooks to book. On the viral video, short of the IGP being sick and needing medical attention, my view, in spite of my limited knowledge on the crafting of digital technology, is that the trending video can only be a technological manipulation. This submission, comes from my working with the IGP at the United Nations (UN).

I served the UN in peacekeeping in Liberia from 2006 to 2010. I took notice of Ibrahim Idris as he occasionally represented his Ghanaian commissioner of UN Police whenever that one was unavoidably absent at the Senior Mission Leaders Team meetings that I sat on with another Nigerian, General Obiakor, who was force commander. I learnt that Ibrahim Idris had returned to Liberia as a UN P-5 officer after an initial secondment by Nigeria. He could not have secured senior police officer post, making him number three in the UN police hierarchy if he were an imbecile, as he is being portrayed in the viral video.

The UN deputy commissioner of police post was vacant in Liberia. Ibrahim Idris subsequently competed for it and lost to an Indian national. He felt he was cheated and I could see elements of that as the head of the Mission had started saying she was surrounded by too many Nigerians in leadership positions.

However, Idris won at the same level D-1 and served the UN as deputy commissioner in East Timor. His departure from Liberia was the last time I saw him till today. That last meeting was when I led the Nigerian community as we had a big send off for him.
The former president of East Timor, who was in charge of the country when he served the UN which partly ran the country, Nobel Laureate José Ramos-Horta became my boss in Guinea-Bissau in 2013 in the service of the UN. He gave many accolades to me about Ibrahim Idris as I served as his chief of staff. He asked me to help find Idris and get him to come to Guinea-Bissau and serve the UN there. I contacted Ibrahim Idris by phone and he informed me that he was pursuing an MNI at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru. And he declined my proposition.

He competed for a UN commissioner of police post late in 2015 and won to be a D-2. He then went incommunicado. Unknown to me that he was planning to be the IGP in Nigeria, I wrote my last communication with him by email, pressing that he should accept the post in Darfur, Sudan, where I was. For me, it would be a boost to the number of Nigerians in leadership position. He has not responded to my message till date.

Has he subsequently developed neurological problems since my last phone interaction with him in 2013? After all, we are a people who lack the courage to demand to know about the health status of our public officials, including the president. Well, if that imbecilic tendency in the video is from an illness that makes the Ibrahim Idris I knew different from the one of today, we need to be understanding. Anyone can be sick. It means Nigeria has another medical bill to pay as a nation. Or are we facing dirty political power-play manifesting in a technological manipulation to suggest that the IGP refused to go to the Senate as a way to avoid being seen on national TV as unfit? Of course, I cannot say. As a technological lay person, I start to wonder about how many cut and pastes and from many speeches before the same audience, could be at play.

However, the office of the IGP needs to be more pro-active on ensuring the rule of law by bringing to book as many thieving Senators as necessary. Until they amend the constitution to also give themselves immunity, they are not above the law.

Iniesta ‘To Replace Arsenal-Bound Arteta At Manchester City’

Featured Image

There are very strong indications that Manchester City are lining up a move for Barcelona legend Andres Iniesta to replace assistant coach Mikel Arteta who is likely to become Arsenal manager.

Reports in recent months have linked the 34-year-old with a move to the Chinese Super League, Major League Soccer and even the A-League.

But Yahoo has put the brakes on those mooted destinations, suggesting that Iniesta could join back up with his former Barca manager Pep Guardiola at Manchester City as a player-coach.

It is believed that the Spanish international is Guardiola’s number one choice to fill the void left by Arteta who is expected to be confirmed as Arsenal manager later this month.

Iniesta, 34, is considering a player-coach offer at the Premier League champions where he would link up with his former Nou Camp team-mate and manager Guardiola.

It would be recalled that the world-class midfielder confirmed last month that he is leaving Barcelona after 16 seasons.

The 33-year-old revealed he was in contact with Guardiola as he mulled over his options for the next career move.

However, a refusal to turn out against Barcelona – who City have played six times in the last five years in the Champions League – meant the playmaker would not consider moving to another European club.

“Pep [Guardiola] sent me messages yes, but there are some reports that I don’t understand,” he told Radio Marca.

“I won’t play against Barcelona. My time in elite football ends at Barca. There are two scenarios, China and Japan…the best choice will be made.

“I hope I can make my decision official next week. One of the options is more determined than the other. I want this to happen before the World Cup.”

Yahoo Boy Reveals New Tactics To Evade Harassment, Arrest

Featured Image

A 34-year-old man, who is better known as Don Dee in the Somolu area of Lagos state, has revealed the new tactics deployed by internet fraudsters popularly known as ‘Yahoo yahoo’ to evade harassment and arrest from the law enforcement agencies in the country.

The graduate from the Olabisi Onabanjo Univeristy, Ogun State, who pleaded not have his real name put online, told The Punch that the failure to find a job three years after leaving school pushed him into cybercrime, adding that he had made quite a fortune, establishing a few investments and significantly scaling up his living standard.

Noble Igwe’s Anti-Fraud Tweets, Oyemyyke’s Rant And Twitter Reactions (Video)

Despite boasting about having two exotic rides – a 2015 Acura ZDX and a 2016 Lexus RX 450h – Don Dee now has to rely on commercial transportation especially taxis ordered through mobile applications to move around town during the daytime.

He lamented that he’s only allowed to rock his ‘machines’ these days at night, adding that “this is part of the strategy many of us adopt these days just to avoid attracting undue attention to ourselves especially from SARS operatives and other law enforcement agencies constantly on our trail.”

“If you drive these big cars during the daytime, you’ll only be inviting these people to come after you and make life difficult for you. But at nighttime, the harassment is very low, so you could move around peacefully with your flashy car even though you still have to give the regular tips to policemen who are on the road,” he said.

Apart from largely relying on public transportation to meet up with important appointments during the daytime nowadays, the young man also keeps away all expensive items like jewellery and also appears as simple as possible to avoid giving himself away as a ‘Yahoo’ or ‘Gee boy’ as some prefer to call them.

In addition, the hotel Don Dee and his friends live in is said to be owned by a retired military officer, thereby making the place a fortress and very difficult for other law enforcement agencies to burst and make arrests. Though accommodation there is more expensive than in most hotels in its class, patrons like the ‘Internet hustlers’ say the peace they experience at the place compensates for every other thing.

“I have a house in town but I hardly go there for security reasons,” the young man continued.

“The SARS guys would always get that information and come after me just to collect money. It is for that reason that I and my guys stay in this hotel because they cannot come in here to pick anyone. They know the man who owns this place and won’t dare to come in here,” he added boastfully as one of the other two men signalled a hotel staff to deliver a bottle of a popular brand of whisky, an energy drink, small bucket of ice and a few glass cups to the table where the friendly interaction was taking place.

N20bn Debt: AMCON Takes Possession Of Asset Belonging To Stella Oduah

Featured Image

The Federal High Court sitting in Lagos has granted an injunction against Sea Petroleum Oil & Gas Limited, whose chief promoter is former Minister of Aviation, Princess Stella Oduah-Ogiemwonyi on the application of Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON).

A statement issued by Jude Nwauzor, AMCON spokesperson, said the organisation took possession of the company’s asset around 11:00a.m on Friday.

The decision followed a judgement by Justice M.S. Hassan of the Federal High Court Lagos Division which granted an injunction against Sea Petroleum Oil & Gas Limited, on the application of AMCON.

“Princess Oduah-Ogiemwonyi, a serving member of the 8th Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has been having a running battle with AMCON over her inability to settle her huge debt of nearly N20billion,” Mr Nwauzor said in the statement issued to newsmen.

“AMCON purchased the Eligible Bank Assets (EBAs) of Sea Petroleum & Gas Limited from Union Bank Plc sometime in 2012. But despite the overtures and genuine efforts made by AMCON to reach an amicable settlement, the Senator and her co-promoters have remained recalcitrant.

“Having exhausted all avenues of peaceful resolution of the humongous debt, AMCON had no other choice than to refer the matter to court. The order also affects Princess Stella Oduah’s other business interests for which AMCON has since appointed Moyosore Jubril Onigbanjo, SAN as Receiver over the assets of Princess Stella Oduah-Ogiemwonyi; Sea Petroleum Oil & Gas Limited; Sea Petroleum and Gas FZE as well as Star Tourism and Hotels Limited.”

The statement added: “Justice Hassan specifically ordered Sea Petroleum Oil & Gas Limited and its affiliated companies to hand over the company’s business, which sits on over 9000 square metres of land in the fastest developing area of Lagos State along the Lekki-Epe Express Way; two Tank Farms of 500 metric tonnes capacity; a property at Maiyegun Tourism Zone, Lekki Peninsula Scheme 11, Lagos Island and a filling station complex at kilometre 14, Lekki Epe Expressway, Ikota, Lagos State,” the statement explained.

“The court order also listed a host of other assets across the country including Plot 2,block 12C, Babafemi Osapa Crescent Lekki, Lagos State; Block 5, house 4AMobolaji Johnson Estate, Lekki, Lagos State; Office/filling station at Jakande, Lekki, Lagos State; Office complex 1,2 and 3 km 14, Lekki-epe Expressway , Ikota, Lagos State; Filing station Complex at km14, Lekki Epe Expressway, Ikota Lagos State; Staff residential Quarters, Ikota Lagos State; E25-E36, Gat Oboh Drive, Millennium Estate, Oniru, Lagos State and F3-F5, SPG Road, Millennium Estate, Oniru, Lagos State. #RoyalWedding: All Is Set For Prince Harry And Meghan Markle’s Wedding

Featured Image

Meghan Markle will begin her walk down the aisle on her own when she marries Prince Harry before being joined by his father Prince Charles, officials said Friday after a last-minute upset when her own dad pulled out.

Despite sadness at her father Thomas Markle’s absence, the US former actress said she felt “wonderful” as she and her mother Doria Ragland arrived at the plush Cliveden House Hotel to spend the night before the wedding.

Meanwhile Harry and his best man, brother Prince William, went to greet the crowds outside Windsor Castle, where many will spend the night to secure a good spot for Saturday’s events.

Thomas Markle will not be escorting his daughter at St. George’s Chapel as planned, after he underwent a heart operation and became mired in a row over staged press photos.

Despite speculation that Ragland could step in, the palace said the bride had asked her future father-in-law to do so.

“The Prince of Wales is pleased to be able to welcome Ms Markle to the royal family in this way,” a spokesman for Kensington Palace added.

It later emerged that Markle will start walking down the aisle on her own, followed by six bridesmaids and four pageboys, before being joined by Charles, the heir to the throne.

The Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby, who will marry the couple, said Friday they were “very sensible” and “self-possessed”.

“There’s profound affection between them which is wonderful and a deep understanding and mutual support,” he said.

“You see (it) in the way they respond to each other, caring for each other.”

– Father ‘honoured and grateful’ –

In the wedding build-up, Kensington Palace appears to have been caught off guard by the chaos surrounding the Markle family.

Thomas Markle complained about paparazzi hounding at his home in Mexico before staging his own photos. The apparent bid to control his own image backfired badly.

Two of his children — Meghan’s half-siblings, who have not been invited — have also caused a stir by repeatedly speaking out about her in the media, and not always in the most flattering terms.

“Kensington Palace has missed a trick with the whole family,” royal biographer Penny Junor told AFP, saying it might have been prudent to invite them.

They are very ordinary people, the Markles, leading very ordinary lives — and totally ill-prepared for what has hit them.”

A recovering Thomas Markle told US celebrity news website TMZ that he was “honoured and grateful” that Charles would give his daughter away.

He said he would “proudly” watch the wedding on television “in a secluded place with friends”.

The 73-year-old said he had spoken with his daughter and Harry and hoped to visit them soon.

– Impromptu walkabout –

The bride and groom went to Windsor Castle on Friday to join Queen Elizabeth II for tea with Ragland.

Harry and William later delighted crowds of well-wishers outside the castle.

The brothers walked along a line of flag-waving spectators, shaking hands and chatting.

When asked how he was feeling, Harry, sixth in line to the throne, replied: “Great.”

The 33-year-old told a woman who had travelled from Toronto: “Thank you so much for coming all this way.”

Harry sported a neatly-trimmed beard, triggering suggestions that he would not be wearing army uniform for his wedding.

Meanwhile Markle, wearing a black dress, said she was feeling “wonderful”, as she arrived at her overnight hotel.

Harry and William are staying at the Coworth Park hotel.

Harry’s close friend Prince Seeiso of Lesotho, with whom he established a charity helping the country’s AIDS orphans, said the African kingdom wanted the newlyweds to visit.

“Harry’s Harry. He doesn’t fit any mould,” he told ITV television.

“That inner child in him is visible.

“For us, Harry is one of us. His taking a person who has African roots again cements our love for Harry and his respect for the African continent.”

– ‘Ethereal’ cake –

In east London, the Violet Bakery was on Friday applying finishing touches to the wedding cake, an “ethereal” lemon and elderflower creation.

Security measures in Windsor, meanwhile, have transformed the picturesque town into a fortress, with snipers posted on building roofs. Around 100,000 spectators are expected to turn out.

Diehard royalists have been camping out along the carriage route to secure the best viewing spots.

“I came here on Wednesday with all my friends,” Sam Perez, 50, from New York, told AFP outside the castle gates where he had set up camp.

“We’re going to party tonight,” he added.

“The people from the town, they’re really, really good, they bring coffee, cookies, hot tea.”

Naira Depreciates Against Dollar (May 18)

Featured Image

Nigerian currency Naira on Friday, May 18, depreciated against the United States dollar at the parallel market in Lagos, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

The local currency lost one point to exchange at N363, weaker than N362 posted on Thursday, while the Pound Sterling and the Euro closed at N496 and N429, respectively.

While at the Bureau De Change segment, the naira closed at N361.50 to the dollar, while it exchanged at N502 and N428 to the Pound Sterling and Euro, respectively.

Trading at the investors’ window showed that the naira closed at N360.85 and had a turnover of 202.47 in transaction.

At the official CBN window, the currency closed at N305.85 to the dollar, and at N412.6 and N360.4 to the Pound Sterling and the Euro.

Currency traders said that though the naira depreciated marginally, it had remained stable at the foreign exchange market.

Meanwhile, experts are worried that political spending in the months ahead might affect the stability of the naira.

The aggressive liquidity mop up operations conducted by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) more than a week ago is expected to persist this week as inflow of N330 billion boost interbank money market liquidity.

In a bid to tackle excess liquidity in the interbank money market, worsened last week by inflow of N290 billion, the apex bank mopped up N454 billion from the market by selling secondary market (Open Market Operations, OMO) treasury bills.
